New Film Tells the Story of Montclair Holocaust Survivor
A
powerful new film An Inconvenient Time: The Story of Ruth Ravina will premiere this month in Livingston. Created, produced, and scored by Denny Klein of Rand, Feuer and Klein, the film tells the story of Montclair resident and Holocaust survivor Ruth Ravina. At two years old in 1939, Ruth’s odyssey began when the Nazis invaded her hometown of Kozienice, Poland. By the time the Russians liberated Poland, Ruth was 8 years old and had experienced countless tragedies and three concentration camps. Hers is a story of survival and triumph. In 2015, the Klein family met Ruth when their twin daughters Evie and Rebecca signed on to the Twin with a Survivor program through the Holocaust Council at Jewish Federation of Greater MetroWest NJ for their mitzvah project. The Klein family created this film to ensure that her powerful story could be told for generations to come. The premiere will take place on Sunday, February 2 at 11am at Joseph Kushner Hebrew Academy in Livingston. The event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served. Registration is strongly recommended. Register online at www.jfedgmw.org/inconvenient-time. If you have any questions, contact Jamie Carus at jcarus@jfedgmw.org or 973-929-3067.
Chatham Author Releases New Book
M
ore Mischievous in Mendham is the followup to Mischievous in Mendham, an anthology of comical memoirs based on the author’s childhood in Mendham, New Jersey. The Chatham author, Gregory Smith, uses his own experiences to explore growing up not only in his hometown of Mendham but the fabric of the American family in eighteen new stories. Full of wit, warmth, and nostalgia More Mischievous in Mendham will speak to all adults with fond memories of their youth. Using small and ordinary situations, Smith explores the difficult-to-find humor in coming of age. From getting stuck inside his parents’ living room fireplace chimney in an attempt to prove Santa wouldn’t fit, to lassoing the Easter Bunny, to knocking out a military communications base with his homemade ham radio, readers will delight in his experiences and even remember their own, similar moments growing up. In the vein of Garrison Keillor, Smith sheds light on a bygone era and encourages readers to relive it with him.

Summer Camp Can Help Children Learn New Skills & Meet New Friends
W
hile at camp, children stay active physically and learn new things. They participate in activities that can include sports, theater, science, dance, academics, STEM, and more; all the while experiencing new learning adventures. Most camps offer diverse outdoor adventures that ensure children are active such as running, jumping, swimming, rowing, hiking and horseback riding. They can come away from camp with a new hobby or life passion they might not otherwise have found.

Celebrating 26 Years! Call for our open house dates Children learn independence while attending a summer camp. They practice making decisions for themselves without parents and teachers guiding them. They gain freedom to move in new directions by managing their daily activity choices in a safe, comfortable and happy environment.
Summer camp introduces children to new life-long friends. Camp is a place children can be who they are, a place away from the pressures of school and trying to fit in because most camp activities are group activities where no one is excluded—singing, playing, taking and laughing.

is new album “American Standard” is a collection guitar pieces, with solos and support from his regular family of players who tour and record with him and share his love of the musical life: Jimmy Johnson, Steve Gadd, Luis Conte, Larry Goldings, Loui Marini, Walt Fowler, Kate Markowitz, Caroline Taylor, Andrea Zonn, Dorian Holley and Arnold McCuller. Most of the songs the album were part of his family’s record collection, the first music he heard as a kid growing up in North Carolina. They listened to the cast recordings of the great American musicals: Guys and Dolls, Oklahoma!, My Fair Lady, Brigadoon, Peter Pan, Show Boat, South Pacific… before he started writing his own stuff, he learned to play these tunes, working out chord changes for my favorite melodies. And those guitar arrangements became the basis for this album. Tickets go on sale February 7, 2020 at LiveNation.com.

ACUPUNCTURE
By Christine S. Maxwell, photos by Dan Epstein
M
odern Acupuncture®, a nationwide chain originating in Arizona, has officially opened in Florham Park. Joan Arata, franchise owner of the first location in New Jersey, says that in addition to the best and most efficient health and wellness offerings through acupuncture, Modern Acupuncture® brings affordability and accessibility to area residents. The facility provides a relaxing “Zen Lounge” for patients. This spa-like setting features multiple heated, massagecontrolled chairs that allow acupuncturists to work one-on-one in a private relaxation station. Licensed acupuncturists use thin, hair-like needles in targeted areas on the body. All sessions are just thirtyminutes. During the pain-free treatment, some patients can experience a tingling sensation. Customers do not have to disrobe during the thirty-minute sessions. Modern Acupuncture® offers two services: health – for treatment of numerous ailments including stress, anxiety, back pain and migraines; and glow – for cosmetic purposes such as No-Tox, designed to improve the complexion and to reduce wrinkles and fine lines. In addition to the convenient location, Modern Acupuncture® treatments are reasonably-priced. Customized monthly packages include tailored treatments so that patients may continue wellness routines. States Arata, “Only about three percent of Americans have tried acupuncture. I want to grow that number. Why? Because acupuncture works. It reduces chronic pain and improves overall well-being. Affordability and accessibility make this a reality.” To receive your first free treatment at Modern Acupuncture®, text “GO Flo” to 89000 to receive your coupon today.

Treat Your Eyes to a
Lush Set of Lashes By Susan Baldani, photo by Dan Epstein
I
n 2013, best friends Carmela Martinez and Anna Abraham were looking to start a business together. With Carmela’s background in business and Anna’s as a medical aesthetician, they were leaning towards a spa. When they had a chance to experience eyelash extensions for themselves, they knew they had found their future, and opened Lure Lash in Montclair. Today they own six locations in total, including one in Madison. “We transform your eyes once lash at a time,” says Carmela. At Lure Lash, individual eyelash extensions are applied strand by strand, she explains. They are made from synthetic material that is super soft and lightweight, so it mimics your own lashes. Since the lashes are applied to clients’ own lashes, which naturally shed over time, the extensions usually last from four to six weeks. To maintain the look, clients usually come back every two to three weeks for a “lash fill.” “We’re very big proponents of customization. If a client is leaning toward a more natural look or if they want a very glamorous look, we can do that,” Carmela notes.
Besides lash extensions, Lure Lash offers other services such as waxing and collagen lip masks. The Madison located also offers makeup applications. Everyone on staff is either an aesthetician or cosmetologist, and all are trained by Anna. “We created our own program on how to apply lash extensions, how to decide which is best for our clients, and how to maintain the health of the eyelashes. That’s our number one priority.”

id you know that people who have close relationships at home, work, or in their community tend to be healthier and live longer? One reason, according to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), is that we’re more successful at meeting our health goals when we join forces with others. NHLBI launched the #OurHearts movement to inspire us to protect and strengthen our hearts with the support of others.
Why Connecting is Good for Your Heart Feeling connected with others and having positive, close relationships benefit our overall health, including our blood pressure and weight. Having people in our lives who motivate and care for us helps, as do feelings of closeness and companionship. 32

HEALTHY MOUTHS: Back to the Basics By Christine S. Maxwell, photo by Dan Epstein
D
aniel Barletta, DMD, believes that good dental health is a partnership between dentist and patient. Below, he discusses preventative measures for optimal oral health. Daniel Barletta, DMD
What are the different types of patients you see? I love seeing all my patients, from the patients that only need exams and cleanings every 4-6 months to the patient that needs extensive dental care. For the patients that have not seen a dentist for a long time, because of fear or cost, I take the time to develop a suitable treatment plan. Most rewarding is the patient that regularly comes for exams, x rays, and cleanings and has not had a filling or any dental work for 15 or more years.
What is the common denominator for patients that don’t need a lot of dental work? They don’t ever miss their regular cleaning appointments, which is so essential in removing the plaque and tartar. Another common factor I see in healthy mouths is excellent home care. These patients brush their teeth carefully, thoroughly,

and diligently for at least two minutes twice a day. Electric toothbrushes also lead to less plaque and healthier gums.
Is brushing your teeth a significant factor? Yes, but cleaning in between the teeth is also essential. Brushing alone will clean about 60% of the tooth, but for cleaning the entire tooth, use floss and other interdental cleaning devices. A “proxa brush” designed to clean surface areas between two adjacent teeth is an excellent choice. We always demonstrate to our patients how to use these instruments in our office.

Tip #2: Get all wrapped up in yourself. It’s not time to think of people’s needs; after all, you should always come first. Tip #3: Find an illness in a medical book (and we do have a name for anything you can think up) that defines why people
should feel sorry for Barry Farber you. Tell everyone your “diagnosis” to rationalize your misery. This should work well for a while, and when it gets stale, you can search for something else to evoke sympathy. Tip #4: Blame everyone else for your problems. Never look inside for a solution. Your troubles are always because someone else got lucky and you ended up suffering because of it. Tip #5: And finally, hold these words close to your heart at all times: anger, jealousy, self-pity, selfishness, self-absorption and revenge. You get the point. Attitude determines your altitude in most situations—some look up and some look down. We have the final choice. If it’s going to be, it’s up to me. The writer Maya Angelou phrased it beautifully: “If you don’t like something, change it. If you can’t change it, change your attitude. Don’t complain.” Or, as the Eagles put it, “Get over it.”
