Millburn Township Couple and Downtown Business Organize Fundraising Concert

n Saturday March 14th, Richie Furay performs for a local fundraising at South Orange Performing Arts Center (SOPAC). Millburn Township residents Nancy and David Stone, owners of Nancy And David Fine Jewels, who are longtime friends with Furay, coordinated this ﬁfth annual event. Stone has also coordinated the exclusive appearance of Brewer & Shipley to join Furay for this performance only. WFUV “Mixed Bag” DJ Don McGee, will be co-hosting the event along with Stone, who is on the Board of Trustees at SOPAC.

The proceeds from the concert benefit many local non-profit groups. D’Angelico Guitars, Investors Bank and Nancy And David Fine Jewels sponsor the event. There will be a D’Angelico guitar auction available that is autographed by Richie Furay, Rusty Young, Paul Cotton, all from Poco and Timothy B. ummit Downtown, Inc. (SDI) is sponsoring the 7th Annual Restaurant Week in Downtown Summit through Sunday, March 8, 2015. Thirty-five restaurants and food establishments will be offering special menu items, prix fixe meals, special discounts and more. A continually updated list of participating restaurants is available on www.summitdowntown.org. For the first time, Summit Downtown, Inc. will be sponsoring an Instagram photo contest. Patrons visiting participating food establishments are encouraged to document their experience with some creative photography. Any photograph taken at a participating establishment and posted to Instagram with the hashtag “summitrestaurantweek” will be entered. All entries must be posted by Tuesday, March 10. The entry with the most likes will win the People’s Choice Award and a $50 Summit Gift Certificate. Peter of Peter Wallburg Studios will serve as judge to pick the winner of Best in Show. Local School Helps Foodbank

wenty club members of the Interact Club at Governor Livingston High School in Berkeley Heights participated in a mass mailing effort on behalf of the Hillside Community Foodbank last month. Helping out at the Foodbank is an annual tradition of the Interact Club. Students look forward to this activity every year and come away with a real understanding of the struggle so many families in New Jersey face every day. The mission of the foodbank is “to ﬁght hunger and poverty in New Jersey by assisting those in need and seeking longterm solutions.” They work to “engage, educate, and empower all sectors of society in the battle and ﬁll the emptiness caused by hunger with food, help, and hope.”

t the 42nd National Christ Child Society Convention, Lambi Newsham, former President and Founder of the Summit Chapter, was inducted into the National Board of Directors as Director at Large. She served as President for the Summit Chapter for 4 years. The Summit Chapter of the Christ Child Society (www.christchild summit.org) includes over 110 local women who’s mission is to reach out to the Summit community and neighboring towns to provide aid and supplies to at-risk children regardless of race or creed, through the personal service of their members. Their volunteer efforts include fundraising primarily through an annual Rummage Sale, the assembly and delivery of layettes to newborns in need at local hospitals and an annual School Supplies Drive that provides essential supplies for elementary, middle and high school children in Summit. Having raised 3 healthy children in Summit, Lambi is committed to helping babies and children in the community get the basic needs to grow and thrive. She is honored to be chosen for the National Board of Christ Child Society and looks forward to working with fellow Christ Child volunteers in town and throughout the country. March 2015

It’s tough to be a kid these days. It’s tough to be a parent. In a society where the nature of the family, the work place, and the community have changed dramatically, we can no longer assume that the natural process of growing up will provide children the experiences and the resources they need to become successful, contributing adults. In sharp contrast to the traditions of growing up in the 50s and 60s, today we live in the first moment when humans receive more of their information second-hand than first! We are in a climate where it is harder to know what we need to survive, so drawing on experiences that give children healthy alternatives and opportunities to instill capabilities, the hallmarks of thriving, is the greatest gift you can give a young child. Does it really matter if my child doesn’t go to day camp, especially since she will go to overnight camp in a few years? She is only four years old—why does she need day camp? Camp provides one of the very few links with a world larger than the consumer culture we inhabit—and day camp is one important choice in a quiver of options. The camp experience helps children and youth develop an appreciation of their place and their responsibility in a much larger universe. A preschooler—

or even an older child who might be reluctant to go to overnight camp—can join a community that is created especially for her to practice growing up. Why wait until age ten when the benefits of feeling connected and being able to contribute and navigate at an earlier age can be reaped? Under the supervision of inspiring guides and passionate coaches, children can feel successful and make new friends while having the time of their lives; they can experience belonging and contribution; they can have a sense of consistency and predictability in times of turbulence and change. Day camp can begin as early as age three, and is geared to children who get to experience camp and still return home each evening! They have the best of both worlds—the camp community which is built exclusively for kids and their own home which provides the security they need at a tender age. One day camp parent said, “While my children and I are constantly bombarded by the news which is focused on what is wrong with the world, camp is a living example of what is right.” Day camp is a terrific first experience. Reminiscent of less complicated days, when people connected with nature, thrived on inter-generational relationships, and made new discoveries, everything is designed and scaled to ensure that children feel included, cared about, and capable. Beginning camp at an early age provides important advantages. Camp is the best demonstration of moral and spiritual order—democracy is the core purpose. Children learn life skills and behaviors that become habits of the heart. While many then move on to overnight camp, others will be content to continue the day camp experience: after all, there is a camp for everyone— and that might well be day camp! Always Begin with an Open Mind One of my favorite quotes is by Mark Twain;

n the beginning, one of my first clients as an agent was eighttime world champion skateboarder, Andy Macdonald. I was pitching his autobiography. He received over 30 rejection letters from publishers because they felt skateboarders didn’t read books and the market was too small at the time. I could have passed on the project, but there was something unique and special about Andy that kept me going. He wasn’t from California. He grew up in Boston, Massachusetts and didn’t drink or do drugs. He didn’t have any tattoos or anything else resembling the stereotypical skateboarder at the time. At one of his competitions, he gave a signed skateboard to one of the first kids that came up to him and showed him his library card. Nobody does that. I finally sold his book to a large New York publishing house titled, Dropping in with Andy Mac, with an introduction by Tony Hawk. The book was released at the same time as one of the Harry Potter books. When I asked the public relations manager at the publisher why Andy wasn’t getting any signings they told me the stores were too busy with Harry Potter promotions and it would be better to wait. In publishing, the first three months are critical to get sell through in the stores and online. I picked up the phone to call five

different bookstores and asked the manager if they would like Andy MacDonald to come in for a book signing. I reviewed all of Andy’s unique traits and valuable insights he could impart on these kids. All five bookstores said yes.
