Visual Arts Center of New Jersey Named New Executive Director

he Board of Trustees of the Visual Arts Center of New Jersey has voted to name Melanie Franklin Cohn as new Executive Director. In addition to helping artists get reestablished after Hurricane Sandy, her accomplishments include leading a five-year strategic plan, an organizational rebrand and expanding programs in education and professional development.

Gala to Celebrate 85 Years of Service, Power and Progress in the Community

he Junior League of Summit (JLS) is celebrating 85 years of service, sustainability and leadership in the Summit area community. The JLS’s current focus is to support local non-profits and improve children’s lives. Much of their financial and human resources will be committed to supporting these focus areas, an exciting initiative and one which they hope to grow through community partnerships. On April 25, 2015, theywill come together with their community leaders and members to celebrate 85 years of power and progress in the Summit area community at an Anniversary Gala. During this evening, the JLS will continue its mission by awarding over $85,000 in scholarships and grants to many deserving people and organizations. The Junior League of Summit is a nonprofit, charitable and educational organization of women who are committed to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women and improving the community through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. Touch Tour Program Initiated at Morris Museum

he Morris Museum is introducing Touch Tours where the participants are urged to “please touch the art!” These tours will enable the Museum to better serve visitors who are blind or visually impaired, and also visitors who may learn better by having the opportunity to touch objects from their handling collection. The Touch Tours are a part of a series of initiatives that began in 2013 with the formation of the Morris Museum AccessABILITY committee with representation from schools and community organizations that serve students and adults with disabilities. The goal is to deepen and expand the engagement and services offered to individuals with special needs through collaborative partnerships that leverage the Museum’s educational resources in innovative ways. Making Math Make More Sense in a New Location

athnasium, the math-only learning center for students in grades 2-12, is expanding its downtown Summit center to 85 Summit Avenue. This new street-level location is immediately across from its former home at 86 Summit Avenue LL4. Together, wife and husband team, Jodi and James Ralston, share a lifelong love of mathematics at their three Mathnasium locations in Chatham, Summit and Westﬁeld. Through exceptional staff, all instruction is delivered one-on-one in either a private or group setting. In keeping with the Ralston’s philosophy that mastery of any subject must be a highly individualized pursuit, the Ralston’s offer no classes. This refusal to lump students together based on grade level or subject matter has proven very effective and is, according to Jodi, “one of the things that distinguishes [Mathnasium] from so many supplemental education providers.” As Jodi notes, “Equally important are our passionate instructors who, through our unique form of team teaching, present each Mathnasium student with multiple perspectives, all sharing a common pedagogic thread.” To develop a real and lasting understanding of mathematics, the majority

of Mathnasium students are long-term and enroll in what is known as “CurriculumPlus”. This membership program focuses on developing mathematical foundations and enduring skill-level mastery for 2nd through 12th grade. Before high school, algebra and algebraic readiness are a big part of CurriculumPlus; students are taught not just how to get the correct answer, but also how to gauge what is a “correct answer” by developing their mathematical intuition (number sense) and applying skills of estimation. For the strong high school math student seeking an academic edge, the Ralstons offer their TutoringPlus program. With TutoringPlus students already having a strong foundation in algebraic math, this program seeks to provide consistent academic support in order for students to do their very best, both in class and on standardized tests. Whichever program is chosen, the focus is on the incremental mastery of essential mathematical skills and understanding through a balance of individual instruction and guided practice. Mathnasium students attend sessions regularly each week through a very ﬂexible schedule. Tailored to the student’s individual needs, each session involves

a mix of one-on-one instruction, guided practice, games, and the use of hands-on models and manipulatives. Although help with school math homework is offered, no further Mathnasium homework is ever assigned. Through “distributed practice,” each student receives instruction and practice in a variety of topics concurrently. This layering and repetition of subject matter keeps students more engaged and thus more likely to master and retain the skills being taught. Research shows that gardeners have an increased zest for life, have a lowered risk for osteoporosis and diabetes and sleep better. The physical benefits of gardening are often discounted because some people don’t think of it as real exercise. But gardening can actually offer the same benefits as other forms of exercise. When gardening, you can burn as many calories in 45 minutes as you can in 30 minutes of aerobic exercise. Different muscle groups are targeted as you increase your flexibility and strength. Gardening activities are also beneficial for the respiratory and cardiovascular systems. Gardening has another advantage over other forms of exercise: people are more likely to stick with it and do it often. According to a survey by Gardeners’ World magazine, 80 percent of gardeners reported being happy and satisfied with their lives compared to 67 percent of non-gardeners. The survey also indicates that regular gardening can help relieve depression. The sights, smells and sounds of the garden are said to promote relaxation and reduce stress. According to a scientist of environmental psychology, gardening is a form of meditation as it helps people forget their worries and feel relaxed.

The CONFIDENCE Factor

f you want to accomplish great things, break into new business, get the attention of key people, and take yourself to greater levels of success, you’ll need unshakable confidence. This kind of confidence cannot be faked. So how do you create core confidence, no matter what obstacles you encounter? These two strategies will make a difference:

Are you comfortable with yourself? Think about whether you are operating from your core belief system. Are you following your true instincts, taking the actions your gut tells you are correct?

You need to be well prepared to meet the challenges that will inevitably come our way when we begin any new project. And each action you take will contribute to your likely success—or failure. So it’s worth asking yourself some questions as you go along.

When you know who you are and what you believe in, you are in a powerful position. Most people don’t realize how powerful that makes them. For one thing, it means you’ll never have to stop in the middle of an important presentation, wondering what to say next or how to address a question. You say what you mean—and mean what you say.

How focused is your follow-up? Do you stop several times during the day and ask yourself, “What is the most productive use of your time right now?” Do you put your hearts and minds into everything you do? Do you take care of the details or fritter away your time and energy on senseless activities?

Where does hesitation come from? Why are we sometimes unsure? Because we don’t prepare enough, read enough, study enough, and work enough. Our strength comes more from knowing that we have put in the work and prepared for success than from what we learn from the actual preparation.

Think about it. Confidence is built by planting seeds for future opportunities and not becoming complacent when success comes along. As soon as we stop and coast for too long, our skills decay, and atrophy sets in.

Our hard work allows us to believe that we have earned the right to “core confidence.” And when I say “core confidence,” I am referring to the belief system and strength that lay deep within each of us. That core confidence will be tested as difficult situations arise. But it will prevail. Why?

1. Create confidence by continuous, thoughtful action.

People say that “success breeds success.” The reason? Success it the culmination of all the hard work that went before… and we’ve reached a high point. That inspires us and gives us the energy to keep building, keep working… and keep succeeding.

2. Make sure that your belief in who you are and the value of what you do is solid to the core. Don’t second-guess who you are and what you believe in. The goal is to improve who you are—not to try to be like someone else.

The English philosopher and economist John Stuart Mill once wrote, “One person with a belief is equal to a force of 99 who have only interest. One of the differences between people with interests and people with beliefs is that the people with deep-seated beliefs set goals and act on them.” Remember that the foundation of your character is built on preparation and action, coupled with the belief and passion for what you do. These are the building blocks of unshakable confidence.
