Innovative valve replacement surgery. Because you can’t be replaced. As New Jersey’s most extensive heart care network, RWJBarnabas Health performs more Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacements (TAVR) than any hospital or health care system in the state—and our outcomes far exceed national benchmarks in safety, life expectancy, and risks of complications, too. Available at Saint Barnabas Medical Center, patients usually go home only a few days after the procedure. For more information and to make an appointment with one of New Jersey’s top cardiologists, visit rwjbh.org/tavr.

Caldwell Banker Realtor Wins Five Star Award
B
onita Areman of Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage has been named a 2016 Five Star Real Estate Agent. Award winners are determined based on thorough research by Five Star Professional who contacts recent homeowners to identify candidates. Award winners are chosen for their professional excellence, quality service and client satisfaction. Areman is in an exclusive group, as less than 2 percent of real estate agents in New Jersey received this honorable recognition. On being awarded, Areman says, “It is an honor and a privilege to be named a 2016 Five Star Real Estate Agent. Positive client feedback and experience are the keys to my success.” While the award is the icing on top of the cake, for Areman the real joy of her business is changing lives. “Seeing the smiles Bonita Areman and relief when I put a sold sign on a home or hand new home keys to a client is worth all the hard work.” she states. Through top-notch service and expertise, Areman has grown a successful business that cares for its clients. Coldwell Banker Livingston 2 E. Mt. Madison to “Paint the Town Yellow”
T
he town of Madison will set precedent as the first US town to celebrate the United Nation’s global holiday ‘International Day of Happiness’ designated as March 20th. “Paint the Town Yellow” is a town-wide initiative and will run through May (National Mental Health Month). From educators and business owners to artists and the Mayor’s Office, the community of Madison is uniting to ‘Turn Optimism into Action’ through yellow art exhibits, fundraisers, encouraging everyone to wear yellow, and hosting a series of special events. Like the color pink for breast cancer awareness, Madison’s participation hopes to embolden the color yellow to spill over into more communities, encouraging optimism during these polarizing times, while also shining a light on depression. Participating businesses and organizations are organizing public events and displays using INT-O Yellow (International Optimism Yellow), the official color of the campaign—available at Short Stories on Main Street. “I’m INT-O Yellow” pins and stickers will also be available at participating businesses, with proceeds benefiting mental health organizations.

Why Low Voltage and LED?
There are certainly many perks that come with installing low voltage and LED lighting into your landscape. Some of the most exceptional benefits are: • Energy-efficiency • Cost saving • Minimum production of heat • Longer life span than traditional bulbs • Safety • Versatile • Provide worry-free security • Environmentally friendly Saving money with low voltage and LED lights has never been simpler. Traditional bulbs last for about a year, on average, and replacing these bulbs is a big job. LED bulbs have a typical life span of 50,000 hours and use 75% less electricity than traditional bulbs. Making the savings that consumers gain over time while using LED bulbs substantial. Not only are low

Preparation + Quality = Endurance By Cynthia Burns
A
home is a big investment. Why skimp on painting it? Whether one chooses custom colors or store-bought hues, careful preparation is essential to a quality, lasting job. Alberto Del Priore, founder and owner of Alberto Del Priore Painting Company, shares his meticulous prepping approach to painting projects—whether it be a home, business, interior or exterior. “Prep work is always the most important part of the job,” says Del Priore, who began as an apprentice painter in Italy. Proper surface preparation, combined with experienced craftsmanship, is key to achieving beautiful and long-lasting results. “Preparation will determine the quality of the finished job and quality is the most important part.” Quality means endurance, and a surface that won’t peel or chip. Del Priore’s method of repairing cracks in ceilings is an example of his thoroughness.
Professional and amateur painters tend to scrape and spackle. Del Priore says this is a quick fix. He opens the cracks and uses tape, joint compound and plaster to ensure a long-lasting repair. Proper preparation also entails using a primer and not skimping on coats of paint. Del Priore has assembled a team of master painters who excel in numerous techniques and styles. He works with general contractors on new construction projects and on restoring historic properties. The painter is dedicated to providing each client with a distinct result that lasts.

HEALTH Profile Dr. Janet Neigel
Dr. Janet Neigel Discusses Eyelid Surgery to Improve Eye Appearance or Functional Problems
Eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, remains one of the top 5 cosmetic surgical procedures performed in the United States for both men and women, according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, with nearly 170,000 surgeries performed in 2015.
By Martta Kelly, Photo by Dan Epstein
W
hile most people consider eyelid surgery solely for cosmetic reasons, such as eliminating loose or sagging skin or under eye puffiness, many patients seek eyelid surgery for practical reasons. “I typically see two types of patients for eyelid surgery,” said Dr. Janet Neigel, an ophthalmologist specializing in oculofacial surgery for more than 30 years. “There are patients who want a fresh and more rested, youthful appearance. But I also treat patients who have droopy eyelids that touch their lashes and therefore, interfere with their vision.” In private practice since 1986, Neigel Center for Cosmetic and Laser Surgery relocated to Florham Park in 2014. The new location also offers the convenience for same day surgery with Eltra Surgical Center at 254 Columbia Turnpike. Eyelid surgery, she explained, is an outpatient procedure. Patients are usually in surgery for 2 to 3 hours and are resting comfortably at home a few hours later. The recovery time
following blepharoplasty is fairly short, she added. “There is some bruising and swelling the day after but it disappears quickly,” Dr. Neigel said. “By a week to ten days later, most of the swelling is gone.” Patients can usually return to work after the sutures are removed, typically in 7 to 10 days, she said. For those patients who still have residual bruising, concealer may be needed for a short time. The cost of eyelid surgery varies, depending on the type and complexity of the procedure, Dr. Neigel explained. Fees can range from $3,000 to $6,000, not including costs for anesthesia and the facility. “If a patient’s vision is impaired, most insurance carriers will cover the cost of the upper eyelid surgery,” she said, adding that vision impairment is documented with a visual field test exam and photographs.

Tips to Stop Waking Up Exhausted
I
t’s no secret that finding time for the recommended eight hours of sleep is easier said than done. More often than not, your time asleep is limited by your busy schedule. If you are lucky enough to squeeze in a full eight hours of shuteye, you are still not guaranteed to wake up feeling refreshed.
While some responsibilities are hard to shake, setting yourself up with the right routine can vastly improve your quality of sleep and combat the issues keeping you up at night:

1. Lighten up
If it’s never light in your bedroom, you may be confusing your body’s circadian clock. The circadian clock regulates how alert you are due to the light and darkness in an environment. If you keep your bedroom dark during the day or use blackout curtains, this can act as a signal to your body that it should be asleep. Swap out your curtains for a lighter color or keep your shades partially open -natural sunlight in your room can help you wake up in the morning.
2. Out with the old
Approximately half (49 percent) of Americans have had their mattress for five years or more and while people struggle with sleep for a variety of reasons, your mattress could be keeping you from getting a good night’s sleep. A quality mattress can give you the support you need to wake up feeling refreshed.
3. Tune out
Everyone’s guilty of binge-watching their favorite TV shows from time to time. While you may satisfy your curiosity by catching the ending of your favorite series, you may not be so happy when you wake up groggy after staying up too late. Set an alarm for 30 minutes before you want to go to sleep and when the alarm goes off turn off your TV and get ready for bed. Limiting screen time before you fall asleep can also avoid disrupting your body’s level of melatonin, which controls sleep cycles.
4. If you snooze, you lose
Hitting the snooze button even once in the morning can make you feel groggy throughout the day. By hitting snooze, you are prompting your body to start another stage in your sleep cycle without giving it enough time to fully recover. Try downloading an app with a smart alarm to make sure that you are waking up during a lighter stage of your sleep cycle.

The Powerful Effect of Ginger By Katrina Musto
W
e’ve all experienced unrelenting nausea at some point or another. At these times, your first instinct may be to turn to over the counter medications; however, ginger works as a simple, effective antidote. For thousands of years, Arabic, Indian, and Asian healers prized ginger as food and medicine. This tropical plant, in the same botanical family as turmeric and cardamom, was effectively used to relieve nausea and vomiting caused by illness and seasickness. Today’s research confirms that ginger also reduces these symptoms caused by morning sickness, postoperative upset, chemotherapy treatments, and motion sickness.

While the best-researched use of ginger is in combating nausea and vomiting, studies have shown that ginger is a multi-faceted remedy with more healing effects: • It reduces pain and inflammation, making it valuable in managing arthritis, migraine headaches, muscle and join pain and menstrual cramps. • It has a warming effect and stimulates circulation. • It inhibits rhinovirus, which can cause the common cold.

• In the intestinal tract, it reduces gas and painful spasms. • It may prevent stomach ulcers caused by nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, such as aspirin and ibuprofen. Add fresh ginger to smoothies or mince into a stir fry. To make a simple ginger tea, simply chop off a couple of inches of ginger root and let it steep in hot water.

Hitting Your Targets Strategies I’ve learned from a Navy SEAL, a martial arts master and the top relationship builder in the advertising industry.
T
here are times I’m reminded of advice from many mentors along the way. Here are three wise advisors who have had a great impact on the way I think, work and deal with obstacles that come in the way of my goals. Their tips will help you focus and hit your targets a little easier when you find yourself off course:
1. Train for War, Pray for Peace In martial arts this means always being ready. My martial arts trainer (Dai Shihan Mark Walker of Eye To Eye Jiu Jitsu) always talks about being prepared and aware at all times. He’s been studying martial arts for over 30 years and has been a bodyguard for Denzel Washington, Janet Jackson and Wesley Snipes. He also trains Navy SEALS and other units in the Special Forces. He would always reinforce the basics of how constant training and preparation give you the confidence to perform under pressure. You can see his interview on Breakthrough (see link at end*) where he explains the key to his art through Humility, Loyalty and Discipline. Obstacles become opportunities to advance when backed by preparation, training and situational awareness.
2. Just Listen… Tony Wainwright was a legend in the advertising industry. I have never met anyone who had built so many strong relationships with the top business people across all industries. He shared so many lessons; the one I remember most is about when you run into difficulty reaching your goals, “Most people really don’t listen to the people they meet. Truly listen to not just what they say but also how they feel, what’s going on in their personal lives, body language and so much more.” You might say, what does this have to do with hitting your targets? It has everything to do with it. Most opportunities are lost because the person thought you said this…and you thought they said something else… miscommunication. He taught me to really understand where the other person is coming from. He would always start out “What’s going on in the world of Barry Farber today?” And then he would have you talk about everything that’s important to YOU. When you are seen as a person who really cares about the individual you’re with, and not just about your goals, it makes a huge difference. All business is built on relationships and listening is what keeps them strong. Just a side note, Tony had one pet peeve…arrogance. He said life is just too short to deal with people like that. He would just walk away. And he could do that with the type of business he built.
Barry Farber
3. Being Comfortable Being Uncomfortable Sometimes mentors can impact you in a very short time. Several years ago I interviewed Richard “Mack” Machowicz, a former Navy SEAL and author. His interview had a profound effect on me. One of the statements he made is that the key to success is being comfortable being uncomfortable. That means doing things that take you out of your comfort zone. Example: in sales, in order to hit your targets, you may need to call at the highest level of the company when you’re prospecting. That might be uneasy for many people. But it’s in the doing that you get over your fears and start learning real skills that help you get in the door. I find that this concept can help you in your business and personal life. It forces you to try something new and step out of your comfort zone. Sometimes just the thing you need to do to go through the obstacle holding you back from your success. Never forget… Successful people do the things that unsuccessful people don’t like to do. *Breakthrough: barryfarber.com/media/television
