Students Participate in Opening for Hong Kong Dance Company

As if the store wasn’t special enough, it now hosts a Designer Series to showcase local design professionals and manufacturer representatives. The events began as a way to give back to loyal customers and attract and welcome new devotees. “We have found that our Designer Series events are growing in popularity because our customers truly desire to be empowered and knowledgeable about design,” states owner Kathy Collier. The events are held six times a year, after hours in the store and are free of charge. New design and resources are taught and explained in a relaxing and social environment where refreshments are served. All in attendance have the luxury of sitting on the beautiful showroom pieces. Current and potential clients will recognize the expertise of Home Again Design through these event nights. The next Designer Series night is Wednesday, May 6 from 7 to 9 pm at Home Again Design in New Providence. Interior designer and TV personality, Courtney Cachet, will be the guest speaker. hirty-five students from the HudsonWay Immersion School (HWIS) ranging in age from 4 to 12 years had the honor of chanting the opening ballad in Mandarin Chinese on stage at Lincoln Center’s David Koch Theater. This took place immediately prior to the Hong Kong Dance Company’s final performance of “The Legend of Mulan” during the Company’s first engagement outside of China. Children throughout China study the ballad, written in a 5th century A.D. classical poetic form called “yue-fu.” This poem eulogizes the story of Mulan, a young girl who dresses as a man to fight for her country in place of her father. Sharon Huang, founder of HWIS, remarked after the performance, “I was so impressed with the ability of the children to stay focused and perform flawlessly in front of a packed house!” The HudsonWay Immersio School is located at 587 Springfield Avenue in Summit and 175 Riverside Boulevard in New York. Tips for Preventing this Widespread, Chronic Condition By Julie Jacobs

he kidneys are busy little organs. They help produce red blood cells, maintain the right balance of body fluids, release hormones vital to various body processes, and filter and flush out waste products and excess water. When they are unable to do their job, chronic kidney disease and even kidney failure can develop, leading to dialysis or, in extreme cases, organ transplant, as well as related cardiovascular and bone density problems. According to the Centers for Disease Control, more than 20 million adults in the United States have chronic kidney disease, with many living undiagnosed since symptoms typically don’t surface until the condition has reached an advanced stage. Diabetes and high blood pressure play a huge role in causing chronic kidney disease, as does family history and other risk factors. By leading a healthy lifestyle and taking the necessary precautions, however, you may be able to prevent chronic kidney disease or slow or stop it in its tracks. Here are the steps you can take right now: • Know your risk: If you are 60 years of age or older, are obese, have diabetes and high blood pressure, and/or have a family member with chronic kidney disease, your chances of developing the condition increase. Likewise, your ethnicity may be a factor. Although researchers have yet to

pinpoint why, you run a greater risk for chronic kidney disease if you are African American, Hispanic, American Indian, Alaska Native, Asian and Pacific Islander. • Control your blood pressure and cholesterol levels: The ideal resting blood pressure for adults is in the 120/80 mm Hg range, and the optimal cholesterol level, which represents a combination of “good” cholesterol (HDL) and “bad” cholesterol (LDL), is below 200 mg/dL. Diet, exercise and medication if warranted are key to keeping both numbers in check. For blood pressure, experts also advise cutting back on the amount of salt in your diet. • Move around: Maintain a regular exercise program, with your doctor’s okay, to help you stay at a healthy weight or shed pounds. Both the American Heart Association and the American College of Sports Medicine recommend at least 150 minutes of moderate physical activity per week. Thirty minutes a day over five days is best. • Eat well: Stock up on fruits and vegetables and opt for foods with less sodium. Also, stay hydrated by drinking water. H20 is easy for the kidneys to process and assists them in clearing toxins from your body. • Don’t smoke and limit your alcohol intake: Cigarettes and other tobacco products can contribute to atherosclerosis, a condition

that negatively affects blood pressure as well as blood flow to the kidneys and other organs. And excessive alcohol can tax and irreparably damage the kidneys. If you do drink, do so in moderation—that means no more than two drinks daily for men up to age 65 and no more than one drink daily for men over 65 and all women. • Take nonprescription medications as directed: Overuse of over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen, acetaminophen and aspirin can have an adverse effect on your kidneys. Be sure to read the label instructions and ask your doctor if you’re unsure about any safety issues. • See your physician for regular tests: Because kidney disease can be detected early through urine and blood screenings, have your doctor take samples for testing when you go for your annual exam. A urine test checks for glucose, blood and a protein called albumin, the presence of which may indicate your kidneys are not filtering as well as they should be. A blood test measures the amount of creatinine, a waste product resulting from normal muscle activity. The creatinine level, along with such factors as your age, gender and race, is then used to calculate your glomerular filtration rate (GFR), which paints a clearer picture of your kidney function.

You might have heard this referred to as “being in the zone,” “in the moment” or “mushin’” as I’ve written about in the past, which means “no mind.” We are at our best when we are acting from our pure self. Yogi Berra asked, “How can anybody hit and think at the same time?” Once you start to think in the middle of action you have interrupted the natural flow of what you do best. All of your thinking, training and researching has to be done beforehand. It’s what gives you the confidence to act without hesitation. Public speaking is one of our biggest fears, but going live on QVC to sell out a large inventory for four minutes might trump that. Three months of training on my lines and key product benefits, along with video tests, kept me focused

and relaxed no matter what the caller or host asked during the live segment. Massive preparation diminished the fear of performing under pressure.
