Winston Preparatory School’s Annual Benefit

he opportunity to celebrate students with learning disabilities, the Lives Over Time event brought out more 500 guests to the Winston Preparatory School’s annual benefit at NYC’s Cipriani 42nd Street on Saturday, April 1st. The evening was highlighted by attendance of Alumni parents and students sharing their journeys, along with student band performances, dinner, dancing and an exciting Live Auction and Appeal. All of the funds raised benefit the ongoing research and program development of the Winston Innovation Lab that aims to support and inform the educational design of the WPS campuses in a way that also serves as a model to influence the education field as a whole. Winston Preparatory School is an innovative day school for students in the 4th through 12th grade with learning differences such as dyslexia, nonverbal learning disabilities, and executive functioning difficulties. he New Eyes for the Need held its Rockin’ for New Eyes annual concert on April 1st at the Hard Rock Cafe in Times Square. More than $200,000 was raised for the new prescription eyeglass program for children and adults in need of the critical tool of eyeglasses. New Eyes for the Needy is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization founded in 1932 to improve the vision of the poor. New Eyes for the Needy purchases new prescription eyeglasses through a voucher program for children and adults in the United States who cannot afford glasses on their own. They accept, recycle, and distributes donated glasses for poor people overseas. New Eyes for the Needy headquarters is located at 549 Millburn Avenue in Short Hills. he 5K Celebration of Life is a special time of healing for those whose lives have been touched by organ and tissue donation. NJ Sharing Network invites you to spend a morning with their loving and supportive community, whether you walk, run, volunteer or simply cheer on the crowd. The events honor those who gave, pay tribute to those who received, offer hope to those who continue to wait and remember the lives lost while waiting for the Gift of Life. Through the 5K Celebration of Life, the Foundation has raised more than $5 million to support their mission of increasing the number of lives saved through research, donor family support, education and public awareness about the life-saving benefits of organ and tissue donation and transplantation. NJ Sharing Network is the non-profit organization responsible for the recovery and placement of donated organs and tissue for those in need of a life-saving transplant. W
hen Danielle Placenti entered the Fashion Institute of Technology over two decades ago, she fully intended to work in the fashion industry. By the time she graduated, though, she realized that she preferred home furnishings and design: “Fashion changed too much and too often for me; interior design was more about fine art than trends.” With this in mind, she opened Creative Works Design Center 23 years ago. Originally a small Summit shop selling home accessories, gifts and custom floral designs, Creative Works is now in Livingston and has expanded into a fullservice design center. The center reflects Placenti’s personal style, which she describes as natural and hand-made: “I like objects with a history, and I like anything with natural elements. I love wood, stone, horns—really anything organic.” Creative Works includes a showroom featuring a wide range of furniture, lighting, antiques, home accessories and gifts such as artwork and jewelry. In addition, Placenti offers services ranging from interior design to staging, decorative painting and custom closet creation. She also employs furniture painting, refinishing, reupholstering, and restoration professionals. From clock repair to holiday decorating to rewiring an antique lamp, she says, “there is really no limit to what we can do.”

This has included, on more than one occasion, reproducing items that clients have seen on television. Placenti recalls a leather sofa with feathers and rhinestones that a client asked for after seeing it on a reality TV show: “It was a very complex piece that took a lot of work, but I did it for her.” Placenti is proud of Creative Works’ customer service, noting that “there is always someone here to help you, and if
I am not here, I will always get back to you within 24 hours.” She adds that she is happy to meet with a client either at her showroom or in his or her home and can even meet with a client’s architect to go over space planning and layout: “When I say full-service, I’m not kidding.”

or more than 9 years Thomas Agesen, MD, Gerard Malanga, MD and Jay Bowen, DO at New Jersey Regenerative Institute have been using stem cell therapy and other non-surgical strategies to treat osteoarthritic conditions. Here, Dr. Agesen explains harvesting stem cells and using them to repair bone, joint and cartilage damage.
Why is stem cell therapy a viable treatment option? People are looking for alternatives to traditional surgical approaches. Stem cell therapy is used to repair injuries to soft tissue caused by excessive athletic activities, repetitive motions or injuries. Patients with acute or chronic injuries have exhausted the gamut of other non-surgical treatments. We can treat muscle and joint injuries, bone and cartilage damage and tendon issues nonsurgically, which reduces discomfort and recuperation time.
How does it work? A stem cell’s job is to maintain and repair the tissue in which they are found. Stem cell therapy triggers the body’s own repair mechanism. Cells collected from bone marrow can generate bone and cartilage activity. Other procedures use fat cells, adipose tissue, support the formation of blood and connective tissue. There is no need for general anesthesia or conscious sedation. A specialized x-ray machine, fluoroscopy, identifies the precise area

Low suction lipoaspiration or liposuction collects cells from adipose tissue that can be processed and injected . We use ultrasound and/or x-ray guidance to precisely re-inject the cells into areas that have been injured.
What is the recuperation period? It is a lot less than surgery! Patients generally are restricted to low impact activities for about a month. The goal is to build up gradually to higher impact activities.
How many treatments are required? Most patients require only one. However, if the injury is severe, additional treatments may be necessary.
What is the success rate? Success is not based on a percentage, but rather, outcome studies. Most patients improve in symptom relief. One way to measure success is the WOMAC scale, a standardized measurement of functional capacity for patients with osteoarthritis. We have an outcomes database that our patients participate in. Overall, if a patient is a good candidate, we have a high success rate.

he most successful people in every field know they can never fully master their craft; there is always something new to learn. There is never a time when you can say, “Ah, now I know everything about this subject.” One man who is a perfect example of continuous learning was former master violin maker Richard Menzel. He spent more than 30 years as an engineer at the Lockheed Corporation. yet he always made time for his love of music. When he left Lockheed to open his shop, he continued his quest for knowledge. Menzel used the standard tools of his trade, but often invented new tools to study areas of violin engineering no one else had explored. He created an instrument to measure the angle of your arm when you’re moving the bow from string to string so that you can gauge and improve your form. He also invented a machine to study the properties of horsehair used in making bows, asking, “How much pressure does
it take to break this hair? How much does it stretch? How much does it expand over time? Nobody knows, but I want to find out.” I remember once being challenged to see if I could learn to play the violin in 30 days. The violin Is known for being one of the most unforgiving instruments to learn. After seeking advice from Menzel, he advised me to take the violin home and for 15 minutes each day, take the bow and put it a quarter inch above the string going back-and-forth from one end of the horsehair to the other very slowly, ensuring to keep the space between the bow hair and the string a quarter inch in
distance apart at all time. By doing this exercise, I realized I was training my hand, arm and muscles to move in a specific way. Then when I played the violin string with the bow, the tone and quality was much superior than before. Performing this tedious exercise helped me enjoy playing the violin a lot more. Menzel taught me a valuable lesson about the fundamentals of learning and how important they are to creating a strong foundation in music, sports, business or any endeavor. He taught me that successful people do the things that unsuccessful people don’t like to do.
