Innovative valve replacement surgery. Because you can’t be replaced. As New Jersey’s most extensive heart care network, RWJBarnabas Health performs more Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacements (TAVR) than any hospital or health care system in the state—and our outcomes far exceed national benchmarks in safety, life expectancy, and risks of complications, too. Available at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center, Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital and Saint Barnabas Medical Center, patients usually go home only a few days after the procedure. very golfer will appreciate the functional Swiss Army golf tool—especially Dad on Father’s Day. This stylish tool has a ball marker, a repair tool (pitch fork) for one-handed use, a tee puncher abd groove cleaner. Using the ball marker, which is held in a slot on the top surface of the tool, the position of the ball can be quickly marked on the green with one hand. The blade of the groove cleaner can be used to clean the grooves on a golf club, and is very useful for punching the position for the tee—especially in hard or frozen ground. ummit Police Department was among more than 30 law enforcement agencies to be honored for their outstanding achievements and innovative approaches in community policing by Attorney General Christopher S. Porrino. Demonstrating their efforts to go above and beyond to reach out to the Summit community, the police department has created many different programs that target all ages, such as the Safe Seniors program, DARE program, youth police academy and more. “I firmly believe that a successful community policing program is far more than uniformed police officers walking the beat,” said Attorney General Porrino. “Rather, it’s an overarching strategy that depends on the collaboration between police departments and community groups working together to identify and solve local neighborhood problems.”

Shannon Aronson and David Silverstrom, DDS By Deborah Schapiro, photo by Dan Epstein This month, we are pleased to introduce our readers to the Short Hills husband and wife team Shannon Aronson and David Silverstrom, DDS, the co-founders of Solstice 620 Foundation. They are just returning from their second grueling nine day medical/dental mission to Guatemala. The trip required a police escorted, seven hour drive—deep into the mountains to where the Solstice 620 team treated more than 450 impoverished people, most of whom were children.

What is the mission of Solstice 620? Shannon: The mission of Solstice 620 is to create sustainable improvement in the lives of people in need by connecting them with professionals who are eager to donate their time, expertise, skills and unique abilities. David and I have found that most people are aware of what they are uniquely good at and genuinely want to do whatever they can to help others.

How did Solstice 620 choose Guatemala? Shannon: Close friends of ours from Canada had been traveling to the Merendon Mountains in Guatemala with the Canadian Central American Relief Effort (CCAMRE) for about 12 years, in order to provide dental services to the indigenous people living there. They would tell us about the living conditions—10 to 12 people in one-room mud huts with no electricity and no access to clean water. We decided to make Guatemala our organization’s first project. David: Shannon saw an opportunity for Solstice 620 to add a medical component to CCAMRE’s work. We gathered up doctors, nurses, hygienists and ample medical supplies to treat the people there. Every morning we would shoo away the roaming chickens and set up M.A.S.H.-style clinics where people would line up outside in the 100-degree heat. Shannon: The trip was horrible and exhilarating at the same time. The illness and dental decay resulting from the extreme poverty is deeply disturbing, but you get to make a positive difference in someone’s life.

Why did you establish Solstice 620? David: It was Shannon’s idea upon our marriage two years ago, that we set up this foundation to honor our commitment to each other and to use our partnership to make a positive impact on the world. We were married on June 20, 2015, which happened to be the summer solstice. We liked the idea of incorporating our wedding date and the symbolism of the sun rising, bringing light and warmth to the world, in our foundation’s name.

Aronson and Silverstrom plan to expand the foundation’s reach to other areas and issues in the future. When not doing foundation work or charitable community activities, they are busy with their careers. Shannon is a realtor with Keller Williams Premier Properties and David has a dental practice in Livingston, The Silverstrom Group. Those interested in donating their time or resources should contact Shannon at 973-214-0691.

Did you know that during a 1” rainstorm, 623 gallons of water will run off a 1000 square-foot roof? Wouldn’t it be great to harvest some of that water and use it for flowers or to wash our cars instead of using precious drinking water? Rain barrels are part of the solution. They allow some of that water to be collected and used more slowly, giving it time to seep into the earth and be filtered naturally. Age 16 +. What You Should Know BeforeHiring a Landscape Architect

W

hen it comes time to choose a professional to create the landscape design you have always wanted it can be daunting to weed out experts from run-of-the-mill landscapers. So how do you choose a Landscape Architect or Designer? And what should you consider before hiring a landscape team to complete a large or small installation? Start by asking yourself a few questions about the design and scope of your project and then begin to narrow down your results by looking deeper into company culture and training.

Available Space & Design Elements Redesigning your landscape begins with deciding on the amount of work to be done. The scope of the project you are committing to should be thought about in terms of available space, time and funds. Consider in your mind if you are trying to complete a remodel or a total overhaul. Understanding how far you are willing to ‘sink your teeth’ into the project will not only help you choose a company to work with but it will also begin to give you a realistic goal for your space.

Why a Landscape Architect? If you are experiencing problems with erosion or stagnate water in your landscape or if you have been thinking you want an outdoor kitchen, fireplace or patio seating area than hiring a Landscape 22

Architect is the safest and only legal way to accomplish the task. A Landscape Architect has the ability to make decisions and plans about grading and drainage issues in your yard due to their education and training. They can also properly engineer the design of retaining walls to stop erosion in accordance with township ordnances. Landscape Architects can generate detailed design plans for any property and complete permit applications with townships which is something a Landscaper is not able to perform. The permit application process is an essential but often difficult part of designing outdoor spaces due to the rigorous demands of state and local municipalities.

Quality Assurance & Customer Service A reputable Landscape Architect and design firm will have quality customer service from the first moment that they begin working with you. A seasoned design team will have plans and procedures in place for scheduling meetings, estimates and discussing design ideas. The best

June 2017

Landscape Architects and Project Managers are flexible and capable of dealing with project changes and unexpected problems; their dedication and knowledge of the field has given them the ability to adapt. Seek out a Landscape Architect who is willing to guarantee their work and plant installations so that if an issue arises after the project is complete you have assurance that there is someone to call for help.

Organizations & Memberships Landscape Architects and design teams who are skilled and well qualified will have training and certifications in many different areas. Seek out a professional who can tackle the installations you desire in your design. Landscape Architects and design teams that are active in national organizations such as the National Association of Landscape Professionals (NALP), American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) and Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) as well as state and local affiliations such as the New Jersey Landscape Contractors Association (NJLCA) are held to higher standards because they are established, knowledgeable and award winning.

Plan for Seasonal Maintenance S

ummer is just around the corner. Don’t sweat the heat—make sure you’re prepared for warm weather by calling Air Group for all your cooling needs. Seasonal maintenance will protect your system and ensure efficient performance, resulting in optimum home comfort. A seasonal maintenance call can catch small problems before they become larger, and more costly problems; and can significantly reduce the likelihood of a serious “in season” breakdown. A maintenance plan also extends the life of your equipment, increases cost effectiveness and ensures safe operation. Having your system checked by a professional from Air Group will provide peace of mind when the hot weather arrives. Being proactive with your maintenance, or with your replacement, you can avoid an “uncomfortable” situation—literally!

Dr. Jeff Leary Fact Checks 4 Knee and Hip Replacement Myths By Rhonda L. Rivera, photos by Dan Epstein

Dr. Jeff Leary

K

nee and hip replacement surgeries are on the rise, especially in the 45-54 age bracket. Below, Dr. Jeff Leary with the North Jersey Orthopaedic Group sets the record straight about these life-enhancing operations.

Urban Legend #1: Knee and Hip Replacements Only Last Ten Years FACT √: See the Doc in Twenty (or more) Studies looking at long term survival of hip and knee replacements show roughly a 0.5% failure rate per year—which means that 90% are still good at twenty years. Dr. Leary notes that improved materials currently being used will likely be viable well past 2037.

Urban Legend #2: Do Both Knees at the Same Time or Forget the Second One FACT √: Doing Them a Few Months Apart is Preferred Dr. Leary generally does not perform double knee replacements because of increased surgical risks. Due to advancements in surgical techniques and pain blockers, patients quickly recover from the surgery and are ready for the second about three months later. In addition, having one knee that was not operated on makes for a more stable rehabilitation.

Urban Legend #3: Patients Must Check Into Rehab for Weeks Following Surgery FACT √: Patients Recuperate at Home Following surgery, Dr. Leary’s patients are home within two days. Home therapy is prescribed for two weeks, after which they walk—aided by a cane or independently—to their post-surgery visit. Outpatient rehab will be ordered for approximately a few weeks after hip replacement or up to three months following knee replacement.

Urban Legend #4: Minimally-Invasive Surgery Produces Best Results

About Dr. Leary: Dr. Leary, a New Jersey native, graduated from Rutgers-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in 2005. He is a retired, decorated Major from the United States Air Force, having served two combat support tours with a Special Operations Surgical Team. In addition to joint replacements, Dr. Leary handles orthopedic trauma and reconstructive surgeries.

FACT √: Not Every Time

For more information or to schedule a consultation:

While patients prefer the smaller scars associated with minimallyinvasive surgeries, they do not always result in maximum benefits. “A surgeon must be able to see in order to put the implant in, which directly translates to how well it works,” Dr. Leary explains.

Simple Ways to Add Physical Fitness to Your Daily Routine

B

eing resourceful with your daily routine can deliver big payoffs when it comes to increasing your activity level. Incorporating physical fitness into your everyday activities can save you time and also burn calories, and it doesn’t have to take much time or effort. “For many people, the biggest obstacle to getting more exercise is time,” says Danielle Johnson, physical therapist and wellness physical therapist for the Mayo Clinic Healthy Living Program. “People feel stretched between their career, child care demands and family commitments. Thinking of spending an hour extra at the gym may feel overwhelming.” If you don’t have time to fit in a scheduled workout, try using daily tasks to incorporate fitness, Johnson advises. “You’ll still be able to reap the benefits of exercise by using small bouts of movement throughout the day. Two 10-minute walks, a few sets of stairs and some five-minute intervals of bodyweight squats, lunges or push-ups can add up to big health benefits.” Here are some tips to get moving throughout the day: Turn chores into exercise. • Mow the lawn or do some gardening. The physical benefit is good for your health, plus gardening can enhance your mood, and the food you grow offers great nutritional benefits.

If you play golf, walk the course and carry your own clubs instead of using a cart and caddy.

• Try bicycling to run errands. Leave the car in the garage and bring out your bike for a quick run to the grocery store. • Turn household cleaning into a mini workout. “For example, mopping floors gives your shoulders and back a workout, and can burn more than 100 calories in just 30 minutes,” Johnson says. Find fitness opportunities with friends. • Instead of going out for dinner or drinks with friends, do something physical, like taking a walk, going for a bike ride or engaging in a physical activity like tennis or bowling.

• Do you already walk daily? Try walking faster or choose a challenging route with hills. • Take up a new summer outdoor sport, such as canoeing, paddle boarding or inline skating. • If there’s a cause you feel passionate about, try training to participate in a run or walk to raise funds. • If you play golf, walk the course and carry your own clubs instead of using a cart and caddy. “Every little bit counts,” Johnson says. “Research suggests that as little as 10 minutes of cardiovascular activity can make a big difference in your health and fitness measures. I often equate health to putting away money for retirement. Putting away savings, even in small amounts, will add up big over time. The same can be said for your health. Investing in opportunities to be active, even for short periods of time, adds up. The key is to be consistent.” (BPT)

Surprising Health Benefits of Strawberries

E

ight strawberries, a single serving, delivers on a surprising checklist of benefits for anyone looking to live a healthier lifestyle. Strawberries are much more than a sweet and delicious treat - they are a versatile fruit that’s great for your health. What better time than National Strawberry Month to share six health benefits of strawberries that may be new to you. Grab a handful of strawberries and read on, because eating right has never tasted so good. • Strawberries help you stay sharp. A recent study in the Annals of Neurology suggests that eating strawberries more than twice a week appears to delay cognitive aging by up to two and a half years. • Loaded with nutrients. Strawberries pack a lot of healthy properties into a small package. Each berry is full of beneficial antioxidants and nutrients, including potassium, folate and fiber. • Sweet without the sugar. The sweet taste of strawberries makes them a natural dessert topping, and strawberries are also low in calories and sugar—one serving of eight strawberries contains just 45 calories! • A delicious source of vitamin C. When you think vitamin C, think strawberries. One serving of eight strawberries has more vitamin C than an orange, topping out at 140 percent of the recommended daily value. It’s the perfect power-packed boost that you can add to any meal or cold remedy. • A healthy choice for diabetics. The American Diabetes Association has identified berries, including strawberries, as a perfect component of a diabetes meal plan. This is because strawberries have a low glycemic index and are loaded with vitamins, antioxidants and dietary fiber. • Cholesterol fighter. Lowering your cholesterol is a common goal for many Americans these days, and strawberries can help. In addition to being packed with antioxidants and fiber, strawberries are also rich in phytochemicals, which have been shown to reduce overall cholesterol levels. In addition, the potassium found in strawberries may help control blood pressure and fight strokes. It’s easy to see why you should eat eight strawberries each day. Grab a handful today—your body and taste buds will be glad you did. To learn more about the health benefits of strawberries, visit www.californiastrawberries.com.

Achieve Maximum Mobility. Perfect Match of Experience, Technology and Proven Success If you suffer from problems related to varicose and spider veins, you are not alone. More than 50 million Americans suffer from some form of venous disorder. While some seek treatment for cosmetic improvements, others are looking for symptomatic relief.

T

he Vein Institute of New Jersey was established in 1986 as the first institution in New Jersey devoted exclusively to the diagnosis and treatment of varicose and spider veins. Today with eight convenient locations, these board certified specialists are considered to be leading experts in vascular medicine. The Institute is renowned as one of the top teaching and training facilities in the world for the treatment and care of patients with venous disorders. A typical scenario for diagnosis and treatment at VINJ may include a physical exam and a 30-minute noninvasive ultrasound test, to determine areas of venous disease (dilated veins, faulty valves, and or areas of clot). The vascular specialist will clearly communicate the latest conservative treatment options and will include Clifford Sales, M.D. an individualized plan to follow to achieve optimum results. All of VINJ locations, have an accredited vascular lab/ testing facility on site. If a procedure is recommended, the noninvasive service is regularly preformed in the office in less than an hour with local anesthesia. Patients are back on their feet fully functional, walking normally out of the office only moments after the procedure is completed. “Just one of the considerations which makes The Vein Institute of New Jersey different from the other physicians attempting to treat patients with venous disease, is the fact that we are trained, boarded physicians with expertise in Vascular Surgery” states Clifford Sales, M.D. VINJ is happy to announce that in all cases where medical necessity is determined, services are covered by insurance. VINJ’s skilled pre-authorization team diligently pursues the carriers for approval and nothing gets scheduled until the client receives their coverage determination.

Diamond MINDS

GET OFF BALANCE

3 Keys to Living a More Balanced and Rewarding Life “Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance, you must keep moving.” —Albert Einstein

H

ow do you attain balance in a world where you’re running constantly and always feeling overwhelmed and unfocused? How do you maintain a happy, healthy lifestyle and also accomplish great things at work without getting burnt out? Here are a few concepts to think about that can help improve the overall quality of your time at work and with your family.

1. Clear The Mind We’ve all heard still waters run deep. This is similar to how the mind works. When sitting still to rest or meditate, your mind becomes clear. New visions and direction can settle into place. It helps you clarify what is important. You can gain tremendous power from quieting the mind in a short meditation, even if it’s just a ten-minute break from your day.

Find a quiet place. Someone once told me to sit like a general on horseback to maintain the best posture. Breathe naturally and get in a centered state. Breathe in through your nose and exhale through your mouth. Concentrate on your breath. Your goal will be to attain “Mushin.” Mushin is a shortened version of a Zen expression which translates as “the mind without mind.” After a while, fresh ideas and new understanding starts to flood into your brain. I have gotten my most valuable ideas and insights during mini -meditations.

2. Push Yourself Outside of Your Comfort Zone When we push ourselves further than we think we can go, there is amazing satisfaction because there is no success without hard work. Remember this...hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard. When you’ve pushed yourself and put in 100%, it allows you to focus on your life outside work.

3. Build Your Own Mind Map I have my goals and action lists in digital form but the actual movement of writing

Barry Farber

has its own internal benefits. There is a study that shows college students retain 30% more information when they handwrite notes during class verses typing. I’m a big believer that until it’s written down it’s only a wish. I’ve been doing this for over 25 years. I call it my Spider Web. It’s a time and activity management tool that I use to manage all my projects and keep focused. Everything we work on is connected and from the first moment I wake up and throughout the day, I can view my web and keep on track. Most of us have a “to do” list or something linear that reminds us what our priorities and actions are. An organic circular view allows us to see the connections with the projects we’re working on. Here’s an example (without the names of each project) to give you an idea of how it allows you to see the connection of your goals: (Picture I’m sending you separately will be inserted here) Calming the mind, pushing yourself outside your comfort zone and having a clear picture of where you are and where you’re going can give you the peace of mind that people call “being balanced” in life.
