The 2019 NJ Sleep Out: Women Unite Movement raised over $240,000, with Morris Auxiliary contributing $23,495. New Jersey’s Women also sent the message that homeless kids desperately need to hear… that we care about them and believe in their promise.”

Their latest fundraising, the 24th Annual CASA Golf Outing, is set to take place on June 17. Spend a glorious day on Cedar Hill Country Club›s 6,447- yard course while knowing that your day out on the course is helping to support better futures for foster children right here in Essex County. The Ultimate Hair Experience for Kids! By Christine S. Maxwell

I

s your child’s monthly haircut an ordeal you would rather not face? Change that experience into a positive one for the entire family at Cookie Cutters, Haircuts for Kids!

Recently opened by Neetu Bhandari, a former creative fashion designer, and her husband Arvind, CEO of Adira Medica LLC, Cookie Cutters is a child’s paradise. Catering specifically to children from newborn to age 12, the hair salon offers not only premier haircuts by stylists who specialize in cutting children’s hair, but also a host of play activities designed to enhance your child’s haircut experience. A visual delight awaits upon entering the store. Designed in bold and bright colors from ceiling to floor, the store even has a large indoor play area. When it is the child’s turn for a haircut, he or she sits in a fantasy chair–a race car, truck, or airplane–for that personalized precision cut. Children may also watch their favorite shows and movies on their own televisions during the cut. Cookie Cutters caters to the ultimate family experience. Those accompanying a little one can have their hair cut at the same time. Stylists are available to cut mommy, daddy, and teen’s hair. Busy parents have a flexible schedule from which to choose– Cookie Cutters is open seven days a week! “I love kids, fashion, and colors,” states Neetu. “With my background in fashion and design, Cookie Cutters provided the perfect opportunity. I am from Livingston and the town did

not have a specialized kids salon that makes haircuts a fun experience for kids and stress-free for the parents. Establishing the business was a way for me to give back to the community. As a parent, I often wished that Livingston had this type of service for my son when he was growing up.” Affordable prices abound, along with loyalty savings. Parents can purchase specially discounted pre-paid cards, a package deal of five discounted haircuts, receive special military, police, or fire discounts, and save money by booking the next appointment before leaving the salon. Wednesdays are family days with substantial savings when two or more children receive haircuts. Additionally, the salon works with children with special needs, setting aside particular times on Tuesdays and Wednesdays for consultations and to provide the children with a quality experience in haircuts, play, sights, and sounds. Cookie Cutters specializes in happy outcomes. Children leave with balloons, lollipops, smiles, and memories of fun and fantasy, eager to return for their next visit. Parents can book their appointments online or by downloading the app.

Saint Barnabas Medical Center Recognized for Consecutive ‘A’s’ in Patient Safety from The Leapfrog Group

F

or the 15th consecutive time, Saint Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston was awarded an ‘A’ grade from The Leapfrog Group’s Spring 2019 Hospital Safety Grade. Saint Barnabas is the only hospital in a seven-state area, including New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Rhode Island and Maryland, to have achieved straight A’s since the survey began in 2012. “Patient safety is a core value and our number one priority at Saint Barnabas Medical Center. We are proud to be among the elite group of 41 hospitals nationally recognized for our intentional focus on patient safety and high-quality healthcare for our patients and their families,” said Stephen P. Zieniewicz, FACHE, President and CEO, Saint Barnabas Medical Center. “Through our high reliability journey, we are committed to achieving excellence for the individuals and communities we serve.”

Developed under the guidance of a National Expert Panel, the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade uses 28 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to assign the grades to more than 2,600 U.S. hospitals twice per year. “Hospitals that have earned an ‘A’ grade for every cycle of the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade are making patient safety the priority it needs to be in every hospital in the United States,” said Leah Binder, President and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “The leadership at Saint Barnabas Medical Center is committed to putting patients first, every minute of every day.” To see more details on Saint Barnabas Medical Center’s Hospital Safety Grade, visit www.hospitalsafetygrade.org. HOW THE INTERNET CAN HELP

Prevent Alzheimer’s Disease

O

ver the past 10 years, researchers have learned Alzheimer’s disease starts much earlier than the onset of symptoms – 1020 years before an individual, family member or friend might notice the signs of the debilitating disease. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, 5.5 million Americans, of all races and ethnicities, age 65 and older currently live with Alzheimer’s disease, which is expected to grow to more than 7 million people by 2025. The first-of-its-kind Alzheimer Prevention Trials Webstudy (APT Webstudy), funded by the National Institutes of Health, aims to increase the pace of research by enlisting thousands of healthy volunteers who can quickly be enrolled in clinical trials focused on preventing Alzheimer’s disease. Enrollees in the APT Webstudy can use the internet to help stop the disease while being alerted to changes in their own memory function. “In order to change the lives of the numerous people and their loved ones who will be affected by Alzheimer’s, we need everyone to get involved with prevention efforts,” said Paul Aisen, MD, co-principal investigator of the APT Webstudy. “The bigger the army of volunteers, the faster we can work to prevent this terrible disease.” Volunteers can access the Webstudy when and where it is convenient for them, such as on their computer or tablet, or even a public library; anywhere they can access the internet. Volunteers participate in regular online memory testing. If there is a change in memory function, eligible volunteers are alerted and may be invited to a no-cost, in-person evaluation at one of the research sites across the country.

“This is an opportunity for everyone to help future generations avoid the suffering caused by Alzheimer’s,” Aisen said. “With enough volunteers, we will be one step closer to seeing the first Alzheimer’s survivor.” Researchers are looking for a diverse group of people ages 50 or older who have normal thinking and memory function. Volunteers must be willing to answer a few questions about their family and medical history and provide information about their lifestyles. Volunteers will take online memory tests every three months, each one about 20 minutes long. If you are interested in participating, visit aptwebstudy.org to learn more.

Make It a Barth’s Father’s Day

B

arth’s has everything you need to make dad feel extra special this Father’s Day. Fire up some hearty Tomahawk steaks or smoke some seafood on our grilling planks. Throw in a Barth’s hat, tee, or grilling apron to complete the occasion.

Tomahawk Steak Recipe The trick to a tasty Barth’s Tomahawk steak is to reverse sear it – that’s right, you sear it last. Generously sprinkle both sides of your steaks with salt and pepper. Pre-heat your oven to 300 o. Stand your steaks in an oven roasting pan and bake for about 50 minutes, checking the temperature after about 40 minutes. Be sure to have a meat thermometer handy. When the internal temperature (measured in the center of the steak) measures 100o, fire up the grill to the highest setting (600o would be perfect). Continue baking your steak until it reaches an internal temperature of 125 o for medium-rare or 130o for medium. (Measure the temperature in the center of the steak.) Once your steak hits your desired internal temperature, transfer it to the grill and sear for about 1 minute per side. Allow to rest for 5-10 minutes before slicing and serving.
