Giralda Farms Preserve at Loantaka Brook Reservation Now Open

fter over a century of being offlimits to the public, the 136-acre Giralda Farms Preserve at Loantaka Brook Reservation in Chatham Township is now open to everyone. Originally a private estate purchased by Geraldine Rockefeller Dodge in 1916, the land became a fenced-in and guarded part of the Giralda Farms Corporate Park. On Saturday, June 6, 2015, a historical moment was created as a ribbon was cut and the Preserve’s bountiful trails became open to the public.

Loantaka Brook Reservation features athletic fields, bike trails, a lake and picnic areas, and visitors are welcome to engage in hiking, biking, fishing, horseback riding and more. In addition, with a

permit or advanced scheduling, guests are welcome to hold commercial filming and photography, tented events and wedding ceremonies.

The land expands the adjacent Loantaka Brook Reservation from 744 to 880 acres and adds 2.3 miles of trails to the already existing 8 miles within the Reservation. The Preserve consists of scenic footpaths through maintained fields, forested areas and networks of streams and wetlands. The protection of the Preserve benefits water quality and wildlife, including over 244 species of birds.

Tips to Avoid and Treat Common Summer Skin Woes

I

n summer you want your skin to look and feel its best. But all that extra exposure introduces more risks of irritation, rashes and bites. “If you’re careful and prepared, you can reduce your risk for certain ailments as well as limit your discomfort,” says Dr. Vishakha Gigler, a board certified dermatologist in Encinitas, Ca. Here’s a handy guide your family can use to avoid and treat skin woes, such as itching and pain, most common in the summer months. • Prevent sunburn by always applying a high SPF sunblock before sun exposure. If possible, wait 15 minutes before

walking outdoors. Don’t forget to reapply after excessive sweating or water exposure. • If you do get burned, relieve inflammation and redness by applying ice in a milk-soaked face cloth to affected areas for five to 10 minutes.

• Protect your pucker and treat dry, chapped lips with shea butter or beeswax lip balm with SPF, which moisturize while providing sun protection. • Drink plenty of cold water to cool down and hydrate your body and skin. • Mosquitoes dwell in areas near standing water and are attracted to hot skin temperatures. Keep skin cool and eliminate standing water from your yard. Also, be mindful that mosquitoes are most active at dusk. • Do you live near a wooded area? Are you taking advantage of the season to go hiking or camping? Avoid exposure to poisonous plants by wearing long pants, long shirts and boots, along with a topically applied ivy block barrier cream to prevent getting a poison ivy or oak rash breakout.

• When prevention fails, adults and children two years and older can treat bug bites and other itchy summer skin flare-ups with a dermatologistrecommended, over-the-counter non-steroidbased topical treatment, such as TriCalm.

A highly effective itch relief gel, TriCalm is five times more effective than hydrocortisone 1% at reducing itch, and does not have side effects like skin thinning and stretch marks. Summer fun and sun can have its drawbacks, especially where your skin is concerned. For a more comfortable season, be prepared to prevent and treat itches, burns and skin flare-ups. — StatePoint

Look Cool, PROTECT YOUR EYES

M

ost Americans understand the link between ultraviolet (UV) radiation and skin cancer. Many are less aware of the connection between UV radiation and eye damage. UV radiation, whether from natural sunlight or artificial UV rays, can damage the eye, affecting surface tissues and internal structures, such as the cornea and lens. Long-term exposure to UV radiation can lead to cataracts, skin cancer around the eyelids, and other eye disorders. The greatest amount of UV protection is achieved with a combination of: sunglasses that block 99–100 percent of both UV-A and UV-B rays; a wide-brimmed hat; and for those who wear contact lenses, UV-blocking contacts. Wrap-around sunglasses are best as they protect the eyes and the skin around the eyes. There are also many types of sports eye protection glasses that offer UV protection as well. It is very important to keep several things in mind in particular when buying sunglasses for children. Kid’s glasses should have unbreakable polycarbonate lenses. The frames should be bendable and the lenses should not pop out. Check to make sure the glasses fit well, because children will not wear glasses that don’t fit well. It is best to have the child try the glasses on and make sure they shield enough of the eye above, below and on the sides. For more information: www.epa.gov/sunwise, www.preventblindness.org

Keep in mind that Polarized has nothing to do with UV protections, it just reduces glare. 34

DIAMOND MINDS By Barry Farber

LESSONS LEARNED

R

ecently, I spent some time with one of my clients, a successful business owner and entrepreneur who is an inventor of many products. He is also involved with manufacturing and one of his products has sold over 25 million units. My role is to help place his products in the market, set up meetings with key decision makers and grow his business. Through several client meetings, I realized he had embodied several key attributes that contributed greatly to his long-term success:

1. Gratitude & Appreciation for Peoples’ Time If you want to build relationships, there’s nothing like letting people know that you truly appreciate their time, knowledge and expertise when it is warranted. After a meeting to explore a vendor’s capabilities, my client looked them in the eye and expressed specifically in detail what he admired about the information they shared. There was no sugar coating or fluff; he sincerely showed his appreciation for their craft and time..My client doesn’t g ive out compliments freely, but when he does, it means a great deal and the clients appreciate it.

2. Taking A New Path People may say, “that’s not the way we do that in our industry or business.” Sometimes my client will have valid reasons behind a marketing strategy or endorsement deal that, only in the long run, will make sense. But for some people it might be hard to go against the popular vote because we’ve grown up trying to always fit in. What sneakers or clothes were your friends wearing in grade school that you also needed? We have a craving to fit in with the group. But in reality, sometimes you need to travel on a different path to make a difference. I admire that about my client; he reminds me to do the same with my own activities.

“Never seem more learned than the people you are with. Wear your learning like a pocket watch and keep it hidden. Do not pull it out to count the hours, but give the time when you are asked.”

-Lord Chesterfield, British Statesman

Barry Farber

What I respect most is his ability to speak his mind and stay true to his goal. He possesses the ability to think and act in a new direction. Even though some people might think it is crazy, it is what separates high achievers from the rest.

3. Contagious Passion My client’s enthusiasm is refreshing. When he explains his product, his enthusiasm is off the charts. It is also clear that he does his research on the product in such an extensive way that the facts and figures and information that he presents support his case. He made you a believer of the overall goal. I was told many years ago that enthusiasm comes from the Greek word enthios, which means “the God within.” What an apt description and what a way to go through life. When your clients can become your mentors, it not only brings the relationship to a new level but you end up learning some valuable lessons along the way.

Barry Farber consults with corporations, professional athletes and entertainers helping them market their products and gain access to new business. He’s the bestselling author of 12 books translated into 25 foreign languages with over one million copies sold. Barry is a monthly columnist for Inc. Magazine and the co-inventor and marketer of the FoldzFlat® Pen. You can see him on QVC selling out unique and innovative inventions. He’s a featured guest on CNN, Fox, CNBC and hosted over 500 radio and television shows in New York City, Washington and on the Comcast Television Network. He currently hosts “Breakthrough with Barry Farber” with over 1.5 million listeners. Visit him at: www.barryfarber.com or email him at: barry@barryfarber.com
