Remaking the Heart of the Home ANEW Kitchen & Bath creates moments of in-home luxury By Janis Hashe

W

hen Vicki Sarracino took over at what is now ANEW Kitchen & Bath, she knew she would retain the same commitment to top-notch customer service that distinguished the business when it was Birdsall Kitchen & Bath.

Sarracino, who has been in the business for 32 years, including nine with Birdsall, uses computer-generated imagery to show clients what their redesigned room will look like. The first consultation is complementary. “People feel much more comfortable with their choices when they walk out of here,” she states. “Whether it’s a more open floor plan for their kitchen, or a spa-type shower in the bathroom, we’ll help clients create the perfect space.” “We ask a lot of questions to our clients, and try to make what can be hard decisions easier for them,” says Sarracino. The luxury design center has the region’s largest selection of high-quality, high-performance kitchen and bath fixtures and accessories from around the world. ANEW also specializes in custom cabinetry, and Sarracino and her staff ensure that each customer knows all of the renovation options available to them. “The kitchen and bath are very personal spaces,” she adds, “and need to be suited each person’s lifestyle.”

A Passion for Fashion NEW LEAF Consignment turns 23 By Janis Hashe

I

n 1994, before consignment shops were all the rage, Arleen Gaetani opened NEW LEAF Consignment in Madison. “It was a risk, but there were so many rewards to this business–from recycling, which helps Mother Earth, to helping people get high-quality fashions at reduced prices during a struggling economy,” Gaetani says. Twenty-three years have flown by—and NEW LEAF is still going strong. Gaetani credits the success of her store to her strong background, personally and professionally. “Being born and raised in the great city of Brooklyn gave me the background to handle most situations,” she says. She spent most of her business career in various human resources departments in Manhattan, and then 10 years as a project manager at AT&T. When she was offered a buy-out package she opened NEW LEAF Consignment, working weekends before her leave was up. Upon her departure from AT&T she was given a beautiful plaque that reads: “If you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life.” The cherished plaque still hangs on NEW LEAF’s wall today. That saying has been true for Gaetani since opening the store. “Clients love the fact that everything is so well organized, trendy and at the lowest prices available. NEW LEAF continues to grow, and has been the most rewarding experience of my career.”

atermelons are mostly water—about 92 percent— but this refreshing fruit is soaked with nutrients. Each juicy bite has significant levels of vitamins A, B6 and C, lots of lycopene, antioxidants and amino acids. There’s even a modest amount of potassium. Plus, this classic summer snack is fat-free, very low in sodium and has only 40 calories per cup. Recent studies have found that watermelon seeds are also wonderfully nutritious, especially if they are sprouted and shelled. They are high in protein, magnesium, vitamin B and good fats, according to an analysis by the International Journal of Nutrition and Food Sciences.

earing loss is not restricted to the elderly. As Dr. Leslie Herman, Au.D., founder of Summit Hearing Aid Center, points out, 65 percent of people with hearing loss are younger than 65. “Hearing difficulties impact your ability to communicate effectively in subtle and not-so-subtle ways,” she says.

Dr. Leslie Herman, Au.D.

Summit Hearing Aid Center, in the same location for 34 years, provides multiple services for those with hearing difficulties, including diagnostic audiological evaluations, hearing aid evaluations, fittings (including live speech mapping), and tinnitus treatment. The Center also offers musicians’ earplugs and custom earpieces to block out snoring. “The majority of our clients have difficulty understanding speech clearly when in ambient noise (e.g. restaurants), when there are multiple speakers or when someone is speaking softly,” says Dr. Herman. Treatment begins with an audiological evaluation, and from there, the professional staff will advise on the best course of action ranging from hearing devices to medical consultation.

“Hearing difficulties impact your ability to communicate effectively in subtle and not-so-subtle ways,” — Dr. Leslie Herman, Au.D., founder

“We work with the most current technology to address each individual’s hearing needs. We can also help those who experience tinnitus [ringing or buzzing sounds] to make their daily lives less stressful,” says Dr. Herman. The Center carefully programs each hearing device so that listening is more enjoyable. Says Dr. Herman, “It’s all about improving your quality of life.”

Definitions of Success By Barry Farber

W

hat is your definition of success? After asking this question in thousands of interviews for books, columns, radio, TV and customer research it becomes very clear that the top answer is always focused on the ability to serve others around you and provide an opportunity for growth beyond yourself. When we build the people around us it comes back to us in many powerful ways. This month a few local business owners share their insights on success:

Barry Farber

Josh Sanders

Jamie Raskulinecz

Bob Fienstein

CEO of Next Generation Trust Services and the finalist in Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award

President of Planet Honda

Vice President of Sea Breeze

“My definition has changed a lot. When I was much younger it was all about financial success. The older I get and the bigger our organization gets, the more success becomes less defined by what I do or what I achieve and more about watching the people we have here achieve success. Seeing employees grow and prosper and purchase homes, get promotions and send first generation kids to college—to me that’s the real success. It’s not just enjoying the fruits of your own labor but being able to see other people realize their dreams through something you helped provide an opportunity for.”

“I am the fourth generation owner of the business and handle all operations. We manufacture sodas, teas, juices and cocktail mixers. We also make Bosco Chocolate Syrup right here in NJ! We pride ourselves on the longevity of our employees. We have one driver that has been with us for 45 years and he lifts 60-pound boxes every day. Seeing people succeed is a very rewarding experience. I also think success is the ability to solve problems, improve how we do things with the goal of perfecting our processes so our business runs smoothly for everyone including our employees, customers and vendors.”

“My definition of success is being able to do what you want to do when you want to do it and in the process help others to become successful. I like to give back and one of my proudest moments is adopting a family. My partner and I found a family through the mayors’ sunshine fund in West Orange. We helped support a mother and father with three children who were going through tough times. We started out taking the mom grocery shopping every week. We also saw the conditions they were living in and made one of our rentals available to them at a reduced rate. We also worked with others we know to donate furniture and worked with them for six years. And now they are a successful family on their own. We made a tremendous difference in somebody’s life and that’s what it’s all about… Paying it forward.”
