Hundreds of Children, Hundreds of Smiles — Over 600 Children Shop Cost-Free

he National Council of Jewish Women, Essex County Section (NCJW/Essex) hosted its 7th annual Back 2 School Store (B2SS) on Sunday, Aug. 2nd.Back 2 School Store. The event provided over 600 economically disadvantaged children, who are referred by over 30 social service agencies, with school supplies, clothing and personal care items. The event took place in a 4000 sq.ft space at B’nai Shalom in West Orange that was set up like a department store. The children were paired with personal shoppers that helped the children in picking out their own school supplies; brand new outﬁts (including a winter coat, gloves and hat); perfectly ﬁtted sneakers and various personal care items. “Some of the kids say, ‘Wow, I’ve never had my own toothbrush before!’ They

have to share with their siblings,” states Laurie Schuftan, B2SS volunteer and NCJW/Essex member. “It is mind boggling what we take for granted every day.” While the children shopped for their new supplies, parents and guardians visited the Gaelen Family Resource Center, where they received blood pressure screenings, glucose tolerance testing, eye exams and information on proper dental care in order to identify any health issues. After the children were ﬁnished shopping, they left the store with their guardians and happy smiles on their faces. NCJW/Essex, the grassroots organization that runs the shop each year, strives for social justice by improving quality of life for women, children and families, along with much more.

Edison’s Laboratory: “Where America Was Invented”

While Thomas Alva Edison is best known for inventing the phonograph, motion pictures and the nickel-iron alkaline battery, his greatest invention is arguably the first laboratory dedicated to the “business of inventing.” The laboratory, along with Edison’s nearby estate, Glenmont, makes up the Thomas Edison National Historical Park. Visitors can take self-guided or Ranger-led tours of the laboratory to view many of the original furnishings and equipment, as well as prototypes and commercial versions of Edison products and more. Back-to-School Tips to Keep Kids Healthy & Safe

ack-to-school prep means more than a trip to the office supply store. Help kids stay strong, healthy and safe this school year by putting wellness front and center. “Thinking about back-to-school now can help parents keep kids on track for a healthy start to school,” says Dr. Sandra Hassink, MD, FAAP, President of the American Academy of Pediatrics. With that in mind, Hassink recommends taking the following steps.

Ease into the School Schedule Ease the back-to-school transition by keeping bedtime and meals scheduled and adjusting timing as school approaches. If your child has been going to bed later than usual, begin adjusting his or her bedtime earlier. Depending on age, children and teens need between 8.5 to 9.5 hours of sleep nightly. For young children, arranging to see their new classroom and meet their new teacher before school starts can calm first day jitters. Go over the school schedule with your child, including how she will get to school and what the plans are for after school time.

Schedule a Pediatric Visit The back-to-school season is a good time for scheduling a pediatric exam. Create a list of items you want to discuss with your child’s pediatrician. This list should include ensuring your child is upto-date on vaccinations, a crucial part of preventive care. It’s a good idea to build a medical home with a pediatrician by sticking with one doctor or medical practice throughout childhood and adolescence. The doctor will be better informed of your child’s medical history and aware of any emerging problems.

Talk Safety If your child will be walking to school, travel the route with him to assess its safety. Find out about traffic patterns and crossing guards. Teach your child safety rules like looking both ways. If possible, have your child commute with an older sibling or neighbor. If your child will be riding a bike or skateboard, be sure they wear a helmet. Review basic rules for safer riding. Tour of Madison’s Bottle Hill/Hillside Cemetery The Cemetery was established circa 1749 by the original Presbyterian Meeting House. Historic Greenwood Gardens in Short Hills By Teresa Akersten

ne of only 16 “Exceptional Gardens” endorsed by the Garden Conservancy, a national organization based in Cold Spring, New York, is located right in our back yard. In the early 20th century, millionaire Joseph P. Day commissioned landscape architect William Whetten Renwick to design his family a retreat from the big city. The resulting Greenwood Gardens in Short Hills is set on 28-acres of forest and meadow, featuring formal Italianate gardens, rustic mossy pathways, teahouses, pergolas, terraces and pavilions constructed from local stone and embellished with Arts and Crafts Rookwood tiles. The property is set against more than 2,000 acres of preserved parkland. After a period of decline, a gentleman farmer named Peter P. Blanchard Jr. purchased the property in the 1950s and together with his wife Adelaide Childs Frick brought back the original grandeur of the gardens. In 2000, according to Blanchard’s wishes, Greenwood Gardens was established as a nonprofit conservation organization. A three-phase preservation program began more than a decade ago to restore the historic grounds. Visitors can enjoy the gardens on Saturdays through Tuesdays, from 10am to 4pm, through early November. Admission

is free to members; adults $10; seniors 65+ and students with ID $5; and children under 12 free. Reservations must be made in advance and private tours are available by request. Special programs are offered throughout the season, including monthly sunrise walks, family-friendly nature activities and guided tours. ou’ve likely heard the adage an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Patients looking to live a long and healthy life know taking preventive steps now is necessary to ward off many diseases in the future. This is especially true with cardiovascular disease, the leading cause of death among adults.

Understanding cardiovascular disease For middle-age and mature adults, pro-active steps toward prevention should be done to fight against atherosclerosis, or plaque build-up in the arteries, the main cause of cardiovascular disease. Early detection, improved health behavior and diet changes now can increase wellness benefits later. When not detected, more advanced stages of the disease can lead to more serious problems, such as stroke or heart attack. One affordable, easy and non-invasive option for patients looking to stay on the road to wellness is cardiovascular screening, often recommended for adults age 55 and older. This type of simple ultrasound procedure allows doctors to see inside a patient’s arteries, and along with doctor checkups, can sniff out certain health issues before they become more serious. These vascular screenings can be a beneficial choice for patients in the right age range and with key risk factors (and screening data shows that more than 70 percent

of the population over age 55 have two or more of these risk factors before their screening). Patients can then work with their doctors to put preventive strategies in place.

New studies prove screening’s benefit A growing body of research supports this logical approach to fight disease. A 40-year study recently published in the Journal of the American Medical Association showed community-based integrated programming improved the health of residents and reduced hospitalization. Similarly, a study in South Korea may have set the standard for the future. There, a nationwide study found that health screenings were linked to lower rates of cardiovascular disease and helped patients better identify heart-related conditions and events. To best prevent cardiovascular disease one must find it early, before the person is symptomatic, so the individual can be more accurately placed in the proper risk category. That

is where ultrasound screening plays its special role. A study published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, looked at ultrasound testing to identify blockages in carotid (neck) arteries in people who were healthy but at-risk, and found that detection of “subclinical” disease improved overall risk prediction. Vascular screening may also motivate healthier behaviors in those screened because people get to “see” inside their body and understand their true health status. Life Line Screening examined a sample of American adults who underwent screenings. The research showed that those screened engaged in healthier behaviors. In fact, 76 percent of participants reported improved diets, 60 percent increased the amount of exercise and 73 percent reported maintenance of a healthy weight or weight loss following the screening. DEALING WITH CONFLICTS

e all deal with conflicts in some form or another at work, in our relationships, and during our daily interactions with others. These conflicts will always be present for those in leadership positions or anyone striving for high achievement. Here are several ways to deal with conflicts while reducing the stress that comes with them: 1. Avoid anger and greed and replace them with concentration and awareness. To have a grounded, focused and calm demeanor in the face of difficulty is admired and extremely effective. The next time you find yourself in any type of conflict, listen to what the other person is saying. Ask about his or her position in order to better understand it. Sometimes there can simply be a communication problem that can be dissolved by letting the other person talk. When we let anger and greed become our emotions, the conflict increases with both our opponent and ourselves.

In every martial art, discipline breathing is one of the most critical factors for control and power. Yet it is one of the last things we think of when confronted with conflict. Breathing calms you, brings oxygen to your blood and heart, improves mental observation and concentration, and ultimately reduces stress.

Try this breathing method recommended by Sensei Greg Barry Farber O’Connor: “Breath in through your nose and let it settle in your belly by doing deep abdominal breathing or diaphragmatic breathing—allowing the diaphragm to move up and down for fuller capacity breathing. Once you let your breath settle to your lower belly relax your shoulders then allow your lower belly to expand and “breathe like a baby.” 3. Put the situation in perspective. When you really look at the reason behind the argument, is it worth it? How many times have you said to yourself, “I can’t believe what we used to argue about.” Look at the bigger picture and realize it can be better to forget it and move on. I find great satisfaction when researching and interviewing people who have faced extreme adversity because it helps to put my own life in perspective. No matter what you’re going through ask yourself if this conflict is worth pursuing or better to be put to rest. 4. Become comfortable in your own skin. Having confidence in who you are will help you to deal with people without getting defensive. Sometimes we spend too much time with people who actually enjoy creating conflicts and thrive on negativity. Learn to separate real conflicts from negative attitudes and people who want to bring you down. Some of the greatest decisions are not just picking the right mentors to surround yourself with, but also moving away from the people who don’t provide any value. Famous World War II admiral, William “Bull” Halsey, said, “Touch a thistle timidly, and it pricks you; grasp it boldly, and its spines crumble. All problems become smaller if you don’t dodge them but confront them.”
