A Hike of a Lifetime By Katrina Musto
D
avid Cuomo took time off work as a geologist to embark on a fourmonth adventure of a lifetime. The 32-year-old Millburn resident and Montclair State University graduate hiked 2,600 miles on the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) and it has changed his life. New to hiking, David explained, “Hiking the PCT was my first time backpacking and was an eye-opening experience.” Going from Mexico to Canada, through California, Oregon, and Washington, his journey included desert landscapes, snowy mountains, and multiple national parks. “I walked from sunrise David Cuomo to sunset everyday and came to find how peaceful the wilderness is,” he said, “I’m very grateful for trail angels (locals who help hikers without expecting anything in return) and my family, who sent resupply packages with food.” Now back to work, David inspires others to appreciate Mother Nature. He said, “In addition to exercise, long distance hiking and walking lets you get to know nature and yourself.”

At Your SERVICE
Opening the Door (and Window) to a Beautiful Home Summit’s HG Edwards Provides Fine Door and Window Sales, Installation and Service By Deborah Schapiro Photo by Dan Epstein
Dennis Corcoran
F
or a business to survive and thrive for over 60 years, it must be doing something right. HG Edwards, a door and window showroom, installation, and handyman service center in Summit since 1953, is doing many things right. Here, Dennis Corcoran, owner and president since 2003, talks shop with Vicinity.
What should a homeowner look for in a door or window showroom? A wide range of products, to begin with. At HG Edwards, we are not wedded to any one brand of door or window. We offer a variety of brands, including Andersen, Pella and Marvin. This is important because the best brand for a storm door may not be the best one for a glass sliding patio door, to give just one example.
Have you seen any trends in windows and doors over the last decade? Absolutely. Homeowners want to maximize the energy efficiency of their windows and doors, and are looking to minimize the amount of maintenance required. We educate our customers
on energy efficient options and maintenance free features to help guide them to the product that best meets their needs. In addition, through our handyman service, we can replace exterior wood trim with Azek maintenance and rot free products; Azek uses PVC (polyvinyl chloride) to create a natural look that doesn’t require the maintenance of older, more traditional materials. Of course, some homeowners still prefer real wood products. There are a lot of older homes in our market area and homeowners want to maintain the integrity of that look. We have a wide selection of traditional wood products to satisfy that demand.
What are some common door and window issues you are asked to solve? This business is cyclical in nature; it follows the seasons. As we enter the Fall season, calls begin to come in about inefficient and aging storm windows and doors. We offer replacement products as well as repair options through our handyman service. Another fairly common
and challenging issue is the replacement of steel windows. Steel windows are prevalent in this area, from Tudor style homes built in the early 1900’s, but they are not energy efficient. They are drafty, let in too much hot air in the summer and too much cold air in the winter. We can help! Clients come to us with energy efficiency and maintenance issues with their windows and doors; we provide options and solutions that complement the style of their home.

Madison Celebrates
BOTTLE HILL DAY By Christine Layng
Many people may not know that a section of Madison, NJ was originally known as Bottle Hill.
A
round 1715, the village of Bottle Hill was established at the crossing of Ridgedale Avenue and Kings Road. During British colonial rule, Kings Road was a toll road that assessed fees levied by King George I. South of Kings Road was, and still is, the Shunpike, a road with a parallel path that was used by colonists to avoid the fees. Morris County was created in 1739. North of Kings Road was governed by Hanover Township and the portion to the south was governed by Morris Township. Most of what is Madison today was located in the southern part of Hanover Township, so it became known as South Hanover.
During the reorganization of Morris County in 1806, Chatham Township was established and included the current municipalities of Chatham, Florham Park and Madison. At this time, the name Bottle Hill was discarded, and in 1834, the name of the settlement was changed to Madison. Bottle Hill Day was created over thirty years ago to promote the business district. This year, Bottle Hill Day 2016 is Saturday, October 1st and is Madison’s annual fall street festival. Over the years, the festival has grown, evolving into a family entertainment and community celebration that draws between 10,000 and 20,000 people to the heart of Madison. The Madison Downtown Development Corporation is excited to announce the 2016 Morris & Essex Kennel Club Match Show and “My Dog Fun Day” will take place at Dodge Field on Bottle Hill Day. 22

Making Each School Year Greater Than the Last
A
math educator of 25 years, Jodi Ralston, owner of and instructor at the Mathnasium Learning Centers in Chatham, Summit, Westfield and Livingston, continues her series discussing mathematics education beginning at home, continuing at school and moving beyond to build strength in numbers here in New Jersey and across the US. Jodi (seen right with husband, James) favors a highly individualized curriculum tailored to each student’s specific needs over classroom group instruction. In this series of articles, Jodi shares her love of teaching and expertise, answering some of the most frequent questions she gets in her centers each day from parents wanting to do more to assure their children’s academic success.
Q
What can I do if my child does not have “the math gene”? Effort is the key to success. Research by Carol Dweck, a Stanford psychologist, shows that students with a “fixed mindset” (where intelligence is perceived to be purely innate) are at a significant disadvantage compared to students with a “growth mindset” (where intelligence is thought of as cultivated through effort). These underlying beliefs about our own intellectual capabilities have an obvious impact on motivation, participation and overall academic performance. Students who are taught that the brain is like a muscle that grows stronger with use are much more willing to take risks when learning new subjects and mastering the underlying topics. In contrast, students who believe the brain is static see failure as threatening to their sense of giftedness or self-worth. Like sculpting one’s own physique through exercise, students who see their own minds as always capable of learning new subjects (given sufficient effort and practice) are much less likely to give up when trying to master each topic despite challenges and failures along the way.
Jodi and James Ralston
Q
What can I do so that my child is not frustrated learning math? While it is natural to want to shield a child from frustration or tedium while learning, it is important to remember that struggle is an integral part of the learning process. Students who are encouraged to have a growth mindset, who see the value in learning mathematics, and who are provided supporting resources are more likely to persevere with the tenacity necessary to succeed ―at math and in life. Learning math is not simply about getting right answers. It is about developing the thinking processes needed to solve problems. Often it takes time to explore topics, investigate problem-solving strategies, reason through possibilities, and justify solutions.
Q
Learning need not be left to magic or happenstance; it can be quite willfully accomplished with no wand nor gene at hand. Too often academic shortfalls are attributed to some genetic limitations of our own makeup or any pedagogical inadequacies of our teachers. Believing such leaves a more important life lesson missed in our formative years; that is, the process of learning and mastery is owned by each of us throughout our lives. Here our mistakes and failures should be seen and celebrated as a right of passage to better understanding―not summarily dismissed as limitations of either ourselves or our teachers. Students who understand learning in this manner view mistakes not as personal indictments or abject failures, but rather as new opportunities to learn again and master more.
Q
elieving strongly that every child has the ability to be more successful when afforded a solid understanding of mathematics, Jodi launched her Mathnasium Learning Centers here locally seven years ago with husband, James. Their success comes from teaching mathematics in a way that makes sense to each child as an individual learner. As Jodi notes, “When math makes sense, kids excel―in the classroom at school, and beyond in life― whether struggling today or looking to get further ahead.”
How can I get my child to realize that learning mathematics is important? Students often need help understanding why and how math is relevant to both their short- and long-term goals. They need to see that math skills and knowledge have value to them personally. Mathematics is a gateway to understanding many other subjects at school as well as a requirement for pursuing many careers in life. Finding connections between “school math” and “real life” is the key. For example, sports, music, shopping, cooking all use math, and when students are helped to see these connections, they are more motivated to learn mathematics.
B
What resources are available for developing mathematical skills and understanding? Today’s connected world offers many excellent resources to supplement a child’s classroom education. While most schools offer enrichment classes or clubs focused on or relating to math, online resources such as Khan Academy or MIT’s OpenCourseWare now abound and can be a good fit for some motivated students. Beyond the many free resources available, an after-school, weekend or summer Jodi Ralston, Mathnasium program tailored to individual needs may be a better adjunct to your 973-377-6284 www.mathnasium.com child’s regular classroom instruction.
“Everyone is born with a great smile, however as time goes by and we get older, our smiles tend to change,” declares Dr. David Silverstrom, founder of The Silverstrom Group.
Make Your Smile
GREAT AGAIN! By Karen M. Smith

ust as every patient is unique, every smile is distinctive, possessing varying degrees of healthy and even unhealthy conditions. Perhaps you grind your teeth when you sleep. Or your gums may bleed when you floss or even brush your teeth. Your teeth can become discolored from too much coffee or merlot wine enjoyed over the years. Maybe your breath is not so fresh and clean. You may even suffer from the loss of missing teeth after waging a battle with devastating decay, gum disease and oral inflammation.

Whatever the condition of your teeth and gums may be today, it is often not your fault because genetics and biology can play a significant role in the overall health of your smile. Whether a patient requires Invisalign to straighten crooked or crowded teeth, porcelain veneers for a total smile transformation or dental implants to replace missing teeth, The Silverstrom Group customizes optimal, long term solutions for each individual patient. With a staff of more than 25 professionals, Dr. David Silverstrom and Dr. Gary Silverstrom assembled the preeminent “Dental Dream Team” under one roof in their Livingston, NJ office. This high caliber team of clinicians includes Board Certified periodontists, endodontists, oral surgeons, anti-aging dentists, restorative dentists, cosmetic dentists and general dentists who can perform every procedure from complex oral surgeries and root canals to filling cavities. They also boast an in-house dental laboratory and ceramist for one-day dentistry and custom life-like restorations. “Since we treat patients the way we expect to be treated ourselves, we respect our patients’ precious time,” said Dr. Gary Silverstrom. “Here in Northern New Jersey just minutes or hours from Manhattan depending exactly on the time of day you travel, all of us in our community can appreciate that time is the true currency of life. Instead of requiring patients to bounce around from one office to the next to see various dental specialists, we invested in hiring the most talented and brilliant doctors to serve all of our patients’ diverse dental needs.” Helping patients from as young as two years old to 102 years old, The Silverstrom Group has developed a formula for helping four generations of patients from New Jersey and New York. Simple yet not easy to duplicate, the Silverstrom formula is: Brilliant 34

The Power of Bamboo I ’ve worked on many projects that don’t happen overnight. It has taken years of hard work and not giving up even when you are told you’re wasting your time. Friends told me to stop wasting my energy on a flat pen that was a novelty item. I was told it wouldn’t sell. Now we have over three million sold and selling stronger today than ever before. I was told I wouldn’t be able to sell my type of recycling program to football stadiums and that they already have a major program in place. We not only won the bid, we did it competing against a multi-billion dollar company. If you see true value in something that can impact many lives with a great return on your investment, never ever give up. Two key factors for success can be seen in the magic of bamboo plant. One, build a strong foundation and two, be flexible when hit with obstacles and rejection. Bamboo is one of the most amazing plants in the world. The benefits range from scaffolding for skyscrapers, crafting of furniture and using its soil-grabbing roots for stabilizing steep slopes and riverbanks. In fact, a single stalk of bamboo has more tensile strength than a steel cable of the same thickness. Before the first missile-shaped sprout of the
bamboo even appears, it lies underground as an undeveloped plant and takes over four years to bring it to visible life.
Barry Farber
In the fifth year it explodes. Some species of the plant can grow a staggering three feet in a 24-hour period and reach over one hundred feet in height! I think our achievements have the same parallel growth period. Every day we add effort, knowledge and experience to what we do and invest in the present for future growth. Committing to your goals and dreams takes time, patience and an internal drive fueled by enthusiasm and uncommon effort. If you believe in the value that is inherent in your mission and are willing to do the things that unsuccessful people don’t (or won’t) do, great things can happen. Then one day we have the capability of exploding through the surface. Like the bamboo that builds its roots underground for years, hard work has to lay the foundation in place to support its growth. Always remember that bamboo also bends in the storm. The richness of flexibility can also bring great reward.
