Students from our Early Childhood program (Pre K, Kindergarten and a Transitional Kindergarten for children not quite ready for Kindergarten) our Elementary School, and our Middle School start their day by coming together as a community for a morning prayer and a celebration of achievements or notable events, ranging from birthdays to academic, athletic, and professional achievements of the students, faculty, and staff.” Students then separate into their classes for a fine academic education combined with lessons in faith and community service. Dr. Ross recognizes the need to prepare students for their future in a rapidly changing world. “She states, our goal is to prepare students for their future by developing their critical thinking and problem solving skills.” At the core of the curriculum is a strong STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) program that spans the entire academic program, and that is seeking national certification. Students engage in age appropriate STEM activities. For example, Early Childhood students will plant a grant funded hydroponic tower garden, while older students may build ships or write computer code. These STEM programs will also be used to

foster interdisciplinary studies. For example, shipbuilding will coincide with learning about European Explorers in social studies and gardening will be combined with a culinary unit to teach healthy eating habits. In grades three through eight, St Patrick’s 1:1 technology initiative provides each student with a Chrome Book or iPad for use in the classroom. Ever-fostering family and community spirit, St Patrick’s holds a family engineering night bringing students of all ages and their families together to work on different projects as a team. Students at St. Patrick’s are encouraged to develop outside of the classroom as well. The athletic program provides students with competition in track and field beginning in the third grade, basketball beginning in the fourth grade and cross-country and co-ed volleyball for older students. Band is offered for the musically inclined, the schools forensic program is renowned for its success, and fine arts are emphasized for students to develop artistic ability. Honoring our past and building our future is not just a motto at St. Patrick School; it is a way of life. The schools dedicated faculty includes numerous alumni, who are devoted to ensuring the future generations are well prepared to be brilliant. Dedicated parents, who devote their time thorough various school organizations, combine with the faculty and staff to provide a stable, challenging learning environment that is as unique as the schools history, and as forward thinking as our modern society.

Are You a Candidate for Cartilage Transplantation Surgery? What You Need to Know About Treatment and Recovery By Martta Kelly, photo by Dan Epstein

D

r. Robin M. Gehrmann is a board certified orthopedic surgeon, specializing in sports medicine and arthroscopic surgery. He is affiliated with the North Jersey Orthopaedic Group, with offices in Millburn and Wayne. He served as chief of Orthopedic Sports Medicine at the Rutgers-New Jersey Medical School for 10 years and as Assistant Team Physician for the Philadelphia Eagles, Flyers, and Kixx, a men’s indoor professional soccer team. Here he answers some common questions patients may have:

Who is your typical cartilage transplant patient? RG: There are 2 main patient types. Young athletes with acute sports injuries, and young adults and children with repetitive, overuse injuries that cause damage to the joint surface. A common injury is something called Osteochondritis Dessicans or OCD, which are cracks that form in cartilage and the underlying bone, causing pain and swelling of the joint.

What are most of your patients surprised to learn? RG: That cartilage cannot regenerate itself, except in some cases when the patient is very young and has no other joint abnormalities. Most people with cartilage injuries will need a cartilage restoration procedure or transplantation depending on the severity of their injury. Although there is an interest in Stem Cell Therapy, it has not been demonstrated thus far to cause cartilage to regenerate.

“While we strive to get our patients back to their normal lifestyles as quickly as possible, sometimes activity modifications as well as standard rehabilitation are needed to ensure a full recovery.” — Dr. Robin M. Gehrmann

Dr. Robin M. Gehrmann

How long is the recovery period? When can patients resume their normal lifestyles? RG: The recovery period depends on several things: type of procedure, age and health of the patient, and how well they adhere to post-surgery instructions. While we strive to get our patients back to their normal lifestyles as quickly as possible, sometimes activity modifications need to be made. It is typically between 9 months and 1 year for a full return to athletic activities.

What does the surgery involve? RG: Cartilage can be taken from another part of the body and used to as a “filler” in the affected joint surface or it can be grafted from a cadaver, as in cases of meniscal transplantation. In some situations, a partial or total joint replacement is recommended for older patients.

Understanding the Serious Nature of

Mini-Strokes

Vicinity Magazine â€

K

nowing the warning signs of a mini-stroke could help save a life. A survey conducted by the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association shows onethird of United States adults have had symptoms consistent with a transient ischemic attack (TIA), also known as a ministroke, but only 3 percent called 911 for help. “Ignoring any stroke signs could be a deadly mistake,” said Mitch Elkind, M.D., chair of the American Stroke Association Advisory Committee. “Only a formal medical diagnosis with brain imaging can determine whether you’re having a TIA or a stroke.” The survey showed 35 percent of respondents experienced at least one sign of a TIA or mini-stroke, such as sudden trouble speaking or a severe headache with no known cause. According to the online survey, those who suffered symptoms were more likely to wait it out, rest or take medicine rather than call 911. Stroke is a leading cause of serious, long-term adult disability in the United States and among the top five causes of death. However, with proper, timely medical attention, stroke is largely treatable. The faster you are treated, the more likely you are to have a positive outcome. The American Stroke Association’s Together to End Stroke initiative, nationally sponsored by Medtronic, teaches the acronym F.A.S.T. to help people remember the most common stroke warning signs and what to do in a stroke emergency:

F – Face drooping A – Arm weakness S – Speech difficulty T – Time to call 911

While the symptoms are the same, the difference between a TIA and a stroke is that the blockage is temporary, lasting between a few minutes and 24 hours. People who suffer a TIA, sometimes called a warning stroke, are more likely to have a stroke within 90 days, according to the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association. Elkind said anyone who experiences a stroke warning sign that appears suddenly, whether it goes away or not, should call 911 immediately. This could improve the chances of an accurate diagnosis, treatment and recovery. Stroke symptoms come on suddenly with no known cause and may include confusion, trouble speaking or understanding; weakness of the face, arm or leg, especially on one side of the body; trouble seeing in one or both eyes; trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination; or a severe headache. Diamond Minds

THE GREATEST GIFT:

The Love of Learning Reprinted from April 2010 by request Barry Farber

By Barry Farber

S

cientists and psychologists have found that infants can probably start their formal education at a much earlier age than was formerly believed. However, as in everything else, moderation is the key. Knowing that infants can learn sophisticated concepts almost from birth doesn’t mean we have to turn them into full-time students at three months old.

It does, however, behoove us to be aware that infants are learning all the time. Therefore, it is our responsibility to provide them with enough stimulation to keep their fertile minds growing—and to be careful that we provide a healthy, positive environment for this learning to take place. The greatest gift a parent can give a child is the love of learning. This can be developed at any stage of life; however, children who love learning from the start have a great advantage over those who must develop it later on in life. Winifred Barnes Conley is a psychotherapist, educator, and president and CEO of the National Learning Laboratory in Bethesda, Maryland. She recommends that the best way for parents to foster a love of learning in their children is by loving it themselves. “We suggest having family learning time,” she says. “While children are doing their homework, the TV should be off. Perhaps classical music could be playing. Parents can be reading, paying bills, or studying for a course they’re taking. That way they’re modeling learning as well as verbalizing it. It’s what parents do that makes the biggest difference. ” Children will imitate their parents’ actions. Conley tells of one family that came to her because the children would

not do their homework. It turned out that the father insisted on watching television from the moment he came home from work until the moment he went to bed. So the children were constantly sneaking away to watch television instead of doing their homework. It wasn’t until the father gave up some of his tube time that the children began to improve their study habits. Fostering the love of learning can, and should, begin long before children ever reach school age. According to Dr. Fred Plum, Chairman of Neurology and Neuroscience, Cornell Medical Center, the reason certain ethnic groups consistently test considerably higher on IQ exams is not because of any difference in brain capacity. It’s because they come from a culture where learning begins early and remains a child’s highest priority through his or her university years. Learning can begin with the youngest of babies by providing them with new environments, new sounds and voices, new sensory experiences. This stimulation allows them to become familiar with the world around them and to feel free to explore on their own later on. Until the age of fourteen, the brain is like a sponge continually absorbing information. It’s important to establish

learning patterns early, when the developing brain is most receptive. “The brain is maximally plastic up to the age of eight,” says Dr. Plum. “Up until then, one can produce serious injury, for example, to the language zones of the brain, yet the child will learn language with the other side of the brain. After the age of eight, it becomes increasingly difficult or even impossible to teach normal language to the nondominant hemisphere. ”

According to Dr. Plum, two elements of learning are important to all of us, and particularly to children: 1. A lot of love and trust. If you can’t trust your own environment growing up, how can you trust what you’re learning? Why should you trust a book or a teacher if you can’t trust your parent(s)? 2. Communication. Children should be in a state of constant learning. Read to your children frequently. Take them places out of the ordinary, such as a petting zoo, hands-on museums, and parks. Spend time with your child, and pay attention to his or her questions, no matter how silly they seem. It may well be that the greatest gift we can give our children is the love of learning, but just as important: the knowledge that we do become what we think about all day long.
