Local Brain Tumor Foundation, ANS Center of Hope, Celebrates Its Brain Cancer Patients
A
tlantic NeuroSurgical Specialists (ANS) brain tumor support group celebrated their members at their annual BBQ. The event was held Thursday, August 28 at 6pm at their Morristown office. The annual BBQ has grown remarkably in size since its inception in 2012 and is a place where patients can find love, hope and support from their doctors and family members. At the picnic food and activities were enjoyed by guests, including a dunk tank where patients can dunk one of the many neurosurgeons on staff. “Our annual picnic gives us a chance to thank our patients for being such a driving force of inspiration to us all,” says Marketing Manager Tom Wood. The Partnership of Hope support group, made possible by the ANS Center of Hope Foundation, meets regularly on the fourth Thursday of every
month. The group meets to dine and exchange personal stories about individual journeys through their illness, but mostly they laugh and celebrate life. The purpose of the ANS Partnership of Hope is for patients of all ages and walks of life to find solace in being around people who understand their daily struggles. Volunteers also work outside of the meetings to accommodate the everyday needs of patients who are not able to care for themselves. ANS invites all to attend Partnership of Hope. Please call the dedicated brain tumor support hotline at 855-267-2667 to answer any questions about the group, to attend the next monthly gathering, or to make a donation. For more information about ANS, please call 973-285-7800 or visit www.ansdocs.com.

ASK THE EXPERT By Susan Wilinski, photo by Dan Epstein
Offering Hope to Patients through Corrective Breast Plastic Surgery
T
here are many personal reasons why someone would choose to have breast plastic surgery, which can include procedures ranging from reconstruction to augmentation. Although people usually spend time gaining referrals for and doing research on plastic surgeons, there are times when the outcomes of plastic surgeries are unfortunately not what the patient expected. Surgeons like Dr. Scott Spiro of Spiro Plastic Surgery, LLC located in West Orange, are consulted and asked to fix the problems.
How long have you been performing corrective breast plastic surgery?
Why are these patients experiencing poor first outcomes?
The correction of poor outcomes from prior breast plastic surgery has been a focus of mine and of my practice for more than 18 years. It has recently garnered more public awareness from the likes of TV shows such as the widely popular “Botched.
A common thread or theme I find in poor outcomes (or repeated poor outcomes) is failure to properly examine the patient and diagnose what the problems truly are. Specifically with breast surgery, variability and subtleties of anatomy may have contributed to adverse post-op events. Failure to recognize, for instance, curved torsos or tight narrow asymmetric breast footprints, can result in implant malposition if incorrect implants are chosen.
What types of problems do you see most frequently in prospective patients? Patients may come to me with breast implants that sit too low or are too lateral, uneven, extra firm or too high, just to name a few conditions. Patients who have had mastectomy reconstruction often are left with incomplete camouflage of the mastectomy defect. A better solution may involve, for instance, deconstruction and then a total re-build with better-suited implants with fat grafting (hybrid reconstruction), placing flaps or reshaping existing flaps.
How do your patients know that corrective surgery is an option and reach out to you? I have performed many thousands of initial, as well as secondary, corrective cosmetic and reconstructive breast surgeries. Patients are referred by past patients, physicians, our website, our blog and the internet where chat rooms and online reviews direct patients to me through stories of successful outcomes.
What steps do you take to achieve successful results when you perform surgery? Once the detailed diagnoses are made, a plan must be formulated. Definitive action requires complete treatment. Corrections require a systematic approach and may have multiple components in a single surgery. These are safeguards I try to build on, in order to assure the greatest likelihood of success. Lastly, is the execution of the procedure that requires surgical skill, perseverance and patience. These procedures are often tedious, but the recoveries are generally simple.
To what do you contribute your success in performing corrective breast plastic surgery? In all my years, I have never met a patient who I have not been able to dramatically help. It just takes a keen eye, a sound plan, perseverance in the operating room, a compliant patient and just a little bit of good fortune!

HELPING STUDENT ATHLETES REACH THEIR FULL POTENTIAL
L
ocal high school and college athletic programs have been running on fall schedules for weeks as games, matches and practices keep participants on their game. Many of these athletes feel that extra training improves both their performance and skill sets. To meet this need, The Chatham Club has introduced its Sports Performance Training (SPT) program, led by trainer Doug Sellmann, to assist athletes in meeting their maximum potential in competition.
“SPT is the development of athletic abilities by utilizing specific exercises, equipment and protocols that are designed with that purpose in mind,” Sellmann explains. “These programs may involve Olympic lifting or power lifting as well as other complimentary exercises that focus on the muscles and movements that many sports require. Combining these exercises with Speed, Agility and Quickness (SAQ) training provides a comprehensive approach to enhancing athletic development.”
“Initial expectations should be increased strength, improved motor control and coordination as well as better flexibility and mobility,” Sellmann says of the newly implemented SPT program. “Over time, these areas will continue to improve and other aspects such as power, running technique and endurance will also improve.”
SPT sessions are conducted in small groups, with weight training classes numbering no more than four and SAQ classes topping at six. Sellmann believes that while personal training sessions can be made available, group sessions allow the program to accommodate the maximum number of athletes per day and provide a great environment for workouts. These groups are geared toward athletes in both the high school and college age range, but younger athletes are also considered.
The SPT program, which is open to both members and non-members, will utilize The Chatham Club’s university-style weight room and outdoor turf track for skill improvement. The program, developed by Sellmann, will focus on strength, power, speed and agility.
“The primary target of the SPT is high school and college-aged athletes,” Sellmann says. “We may, however, work with athletes
as young as 12 years old. Much depends on their physical maturity and previous training experience.” “It is an infinite and non-progressional program,” Sellmann says. “Athletes can start and stop as their schedules dictate. They retain unused sessions and can resume at any time. If they miss a period of time, the program focus will resume from when they left. Each program is individualized to the athlete’s needs.” Members can sign up for the SPT program for $35.00 per session, or they can pre-purchase a 10-pack for $350.00. Nonmembers can schedule sessions for $45.00 each or $450.00 for a 10-pack. “Now that we have started the SPT, we are able to provide a state-of-the-art facility and program for aspiring athletes,” says Sellmann.

Osteoporosis Insight from the Latest Investigations By Julie Jacobs
osteoporosis [os-tee-oh-puh-roh-sis] a disorder in which the bones become increasingly porous, brittle, and subject to fracture, owing to loss of calcium and other mineral components, sometimes resulting in pain, decreased height, and skeletal deformities: common in older persons, primarily postmenopausal women, but also associated with long-term steroid therapy and certain endocrine disorders. 36
Vicinity Magazine
October 2014
T
he statistics are staggering for osteoporosis, a chronic condition characterized by low bone density and deficits in calcium and other minerals that render bones brittle and highly breakable. Just this past June, the National Osteoporosis Foundation released updated data on the numbers of Americans both at risk for and affected by the disease: 10.2 million adults age 50 and older have osteoporosis, while another 43 million have a good chance of developing it.
With osteoporosis the culprit behind some two million broken bones annually—breaks that frequently lead to ongoing pain, immobility and a variety of related health problems, not to mention exponential treatment costs—the need for better prevention has never been greater. For everybody, particularly the one in two women and the one in four men who will suffer a fracture from osteoporosis, research as of late offers sage advice for averting and living with the illness today, while holding promise for a “bone healthy” tomorrow.
The News on Diet & Exercise Don’t smoke, avoid or limit alcohol, exercise regularly, eat lots of fruits and vegetables, and increase intake of calcium and Vitamin D—all part of the basic protocol for keeping your bones strong and warding off osteoporosis. But one recent investigation reveals that diet and lifestyle changes prescribed to protect the heart can make better bones as well for a two-for-one “health punch.” The study developed an adherence score for following the American Heart Association’s (AHA) 2006 Diet and Lifestyle recommendations, and then tracked 933 participants, aged 47 to 79. Findings showed that the risk for osteoporosis in bone areas throughout the body dropped from between 9% and 17% when adherence scores increased incrementally. So whereas calcium and Vitamin D always have been important for healthy bones, many other foods and nutrients, once advised primarily for a healthy heart, are now being heralded for their bone-strengthening properties. You should still eat the staples: dairy products such as low-fat or fat-free yogurt, milk and cheese; fatty fish like salmon and sardines; dark leafy green vegetables such as broccoli, kale and okra; and even foods fortified with Vitamin D and calcium like soy milk and cereal. But moving forward, include in your diet foods rich in magnesium (raisins, spinach and sweet potatoes), high in potassium (bananas, oranges and tomatoes), and filled with Vitamin C (brussel sprouts, green and red peppers and strawberries). The research shows they’ll not only help to increase bone density, but reduce fracture risk as well. And when it comes to exercise, frequent physical activity that promotes a tip-top ticker is just as valuable for boosting bone strength. According to the AHA, 150 minutes per week of moderate exercise improves your overall cardiovascular health. These same minutes, whether spent walking, running, hiking, dancing or doing other weight-bearing movements, also have a positive affect on your bones—especially in your thighs and upper body, which are prone to breaks. Be sure to consult with your physician, however, before starting any exercise regimen.
Still Other Research Many other studies are making significant advances in what causes osteoporosis and how best to prevent, diagnose and treat the disease. Recent research protocols have: • discovered two integral genes: one considered vital for normal bone formation and the other linked with weight loss (in women 65 and older) that contributes to bone loss; • detected biomarkers that correlate with changes in bone remodeling (formation and breakdown) and, in turn, may offer insight into the loss of bone; • found that quantitative ultrasound (QUS) of the heel predicts hip and other nonvertebral fractures almost as well as the more expensive dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA); • supported the usefulness of low-dose estrogen, selective estrogen receptor modulators and bisphosphonates in both preventing and treating osteoporosis.
