J
Art & Soul— An Evening of Visual Goodness
In 1989, JSDD purchased, renovated and occupied its first community-based supervised, supportive living setting (group home) in Millburn, New Jersey, under the auspices of United Jewish Federation of MetroWest. In 1996, JSDD was established as an independent agency. Since then, an additional ten supervised, supportive living sites have been added. In 2004, JSDD opened the doors of the Wae (Wellness, Arts &Enrichment) Center, an alternative learning program which provides opportunities for people with developmental and acquired disabilities to develop skills and cultivate self-esteem while tapping unknown talents and creating new possibilities for artistic pursuits, wellness endeavors and enrichment activities. The event will be held at the Morris Museum in Morristown on Sunday, November 6 from 6:30–9:30pm. Individuals can register by visiting: www.jsddmetrowest.org/20th-anniversary-concert.

Calling All Vendors
My family has a special appreciation for SAGE Eldercare. The organization offers many services such as: home care, adult day programs, care planning, Meals on Wheels, information referrals and Medicare counseling. My mother, Ruth, came upon SAGE Eldercare when one of her volunteer organizations offered help with their Meals on Wheels program. When my father, Ed, retired, he joined her in driving around Summit and nearby towns. Since 2004, I have also devoted time to delivering meals and found it to be a rewarding experience. Marianne Kranz, Director of Volunteers, Meals on Wheels & Home Support Services, is highly organized and sends the volunteers off with everything they need to help the meal recipients. My family has also utilized SAGE Eldercare when our parents needed help at home. We found a special person through SAGE, John McLoughlin. He fit into our busy family and his wonderful Irish spirit kept our dad mentally sharp and physically safe. John passed away on September 8, 2016. We want to say a thank you to his family for sharing him with us. SAGE provides so many important services to Summit and the surrounding communities. Home & GARDEN Easy Ways to Weatherize Your Home
E
xtreme temperatures—hot or cold—can send your energy bills through the roof while also creating an uncomfortable living space for your family. Almost two-thirds of American adults live in a home that needs weatherization, according to a recent online survey, commissioned by Duck brand, conducted by Harris Poll. To bring down energy costs and make the temperature in your home more comfortable, consider defending your home with helpful tools like Roll-On Window Kits, Double Draft Seals, Socket Sealers and Attic Stairway Covers. You can also adjust ceiling fans, install a programmable thermostat and open or close curtains to leverage sunlight and shade. To learn more about weatherization products and ways you can make your home more comfortable and efficient, visit duckbrand.com/weatherization. Don’t resign yourself to high energy bills and an uncomfortable living space. Weatherizing is simple, affordable and effective. —StatePoint

Renovating? Consider a Fireplace
W
hen considering home renovations, it’s important to be choosy, as some projects can end up costing you a pretty penny with little return on investment.
Some fast facts can provide answers to this age old consideration. Here are three compelling reasons to think fireplace. • A gas fireplace will add between $2,950 to $5,900 to a home’s value, according to the “Marshall & Swift Residential Cost Handbook.” • New homebuyers rank fireplaces as the number one most desired decorative appearance product in a new home, according to the National Association of Home Builders. • Today, homeowners have an opportunity to differentiate their homes with a fireplace in different ways. Both traditional and modern fireplaces are now offered with innovative technologies that push the boundaries of where fire can go and how it can look. Consider brands that designers, architects, builders, and remodelers trust, such as Heat & Glo, which leads the industry in design and innovative technology.
More information about how a fireplace can improve home value and differentiate spaces is available at www.heatnglo.com. For those looking to renovate, a fireplace presents an attractive choice—whether a sale is in the cards or you simply want to enhance appeal and comfort. —StatePoint See page 37 for Vicinity Magazine’s A List for Home and Garden

Preparing Young Women to be Leaders The Academy of St. Elizabeth Offers a Rigorous, CatholicBased Education By Deborah Schapiro, photos by Dan Epstein
L
ynn Burek, the principal of the Academy of Saint Elizabeth (AOSE) really enjoys her job. She says, “We have such a warm, nurturing community here. Our girls are happy to come to school because of the close relationships they form with their teachers and staff as well as each other.” Located minutes from Morristown in Convent Station, AOSE is an independent Catholic high school which has been providing an academically rigorous education to young women since 1860. Burek, the school’s first lay principal, says “We go above and beyond New Jersey state requirements for graduation. Students here must take four years of English and math, as well as three years of both history and lab science.”
Lynn Burek, principal
They also take four years of religion, which Burek considers the most important class of all: “This is a class that is relevant to contemporary life; it deals with real-world issues.” Religion is woven throughout the day in other ways, such as morning and afternoon prayer. The students often come to Burek with ideas for spiritual enrichment activities; she adds “they really seem to enjoy living and sharing their faith.” An AOSE education also includes a strong community service component. Students visit with the residents of the nearby Sisters of Charity nursing home and work with disabled children at the Madison Area YMCA. They also prepare lunches for the homeless and tutor not only adults learning English but also local schoolchildren needing academic support.
Teacher Lauren Corvo in the science lab with students
As important as the curriculum is the atmosphere at AOSE. The school is quite small, with a student body of approximately 145. This allows for a lot of individual attention in class, as well as the forming of strong bonds. In addition, the absence of boys removes what Burek calls “a major distraction.” She affirms, “A single-sex education gives young women a lot of confidence and prepares them to become leaders. We graduate very empowered young women.”

poor night’s sleep can leave you feeling exhausted and cranky, but long-term sleep disruption can actually lead to serious health conditions. Not only is sleep apnea a leading cause of disrupted sleep and daytime sleepiness, but this disease is also a contributing factor to a host of medical problems. According to the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine (AADSM), approximately 25 million adults in the United States suffer from obstructive sleep apnea. This breathing disorder causes you to snore loudly and stop breathing up to hundreds of times a night for anywhere from 10 seconds to more than a minute. Despite the prevalence of sleep apnea, many don’t realize they have it. Others are unable to tolerate a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine and mask, which is the most common treatment for sleep apnea. However, an effective alternative treatment for sleep apnea is a custom-fit oral appliance provided by a qualified dentist. Treating sleep apnea can lead to better rest and ease your risk of developing these five serious health complications:
1
High Blood Pressure
2
Heart Disease
Sleep apnea is common among patients with high blood pressure, and even more so among patients who have treatment-resistant high blood pressure. In medical studies, oral appliance therapy has been shown to help reduce high blood pressure. This treatment uses a custom-fitted, mouth guardlike device to move the jaw slightly forward and keep the airway open, without the need for a constantly running machine and face mask.
Heart disease is a common affliction for those with sleep apnea, according to a study from the University of Wisconsin. The same study showed that the risk of dying from heart disease
may increase by as much as five times among those who have untreated, severe sleep apnea.
3
Depression
4
Diabetes
5
Stroke
Data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows that women suffering from untreated sleep apnea have a five times greater risk for depression symptoms, while men who have untreated sleep apnea are more than twice as likely to exhibit signs of clinical depression.
Up to 83 percent of Type 2 diabetes patients have sleep apnea and are not even aware of it, according to research published on “Frontiers in Neurology.” Recent medical research suggests that glucose control weakens as the severity of a patient’s sleep apnea increases.
The risk for stroke also rises with untreated sleep apnea, according to research published in “The American Journal of Medicine.” The study shows that the risk rises even if the patient has no other stroke risk factors. Obstructive sleep apnea also is frequently found among those who have already suffered a stroke. Talk with your doctor if you suspect that you or a loved one may be suffering from sleep apnea. Common warning signs include snoring, choking and gasping during sleep. If diagnosed, a routine of consistent, nightly treatment, such as CPAP therapy or oral appliance therapy, is the best way to manage sleep apnea and reduce the risk of developing serious health complications. Provided by an AADSM member dentist, oral appliance therapy is often easier to use on a regular basis for many patients. Dr. Robin Gehrmann The Athlete’s Orthopedist By Rhonda L. Rivera, Photos by Daniel Epstein
T
o whom should an athlete turn after being sidelined from their sport following an acute shoulder or knee injury? The answer is Dr. Robin Gehrmann, who has devoted his career to helping athletes, especially younger ones, return to the field safely and reliably. Team physician for the Philadelphia Eagles and Flyers for several years prior to joining North Jersey Orthopedic Group in Millburn, Dr. Gehrmann has collaborated with elite therapists and trainers. He now applies that knowledge to helping his patients recover. He also instructs on injury prevention, which is more prevalent now due to overuse.
Orthopedics called to Dr. Gehrmann because he enjoys solving problems. During high school and college, he worked in his own carpentry business. He transferred these skills to working on the human body, especially enjoying the biologic reconstructive nature of M E D I C A L the practice. His areas of specialty include minimally-invasive arthroscopic procedures, and complex ligament and cartilage transplant and reconstruction.
Dr. Robin Gehrmann
EXPERT
ADV I S OR
When asked what drew him to sports medicine, he explains that he can relate to athletes and understands what it takes to get back to a sport, even while recovering. Moreover, Dr. Gehrmann seeks innovative ways to cross-train around an injury. He often coordinates work-outs with coaches and trainers so the athlete can remain immersed the sport while safely recovering. Dr. Gehrmann describes his approach as conservative. His first choice is always to wait and do rehabilitation, if possible, saving surgery as a last resort. “I treat the individual, not the MRI, integrating the person’s age and activity level with personal expectations,” notes Dr. Gehrmann. After explaining all options, doctor and patient set out a personal course of treatment. Patients rave about Dr. Gehrmann’s warm, friendly, reassuring bedside manner. They point to his professionalism in how he takes the time to explain every option. He prides himself on educating each patient to achieve optimum results. Dr. Gehrmann is the Head Team Physician for all of the Rutgers-Newark Athletic teams and several high schools as well. In addition to football and soccer players, he also works with gymnasts and Mixed Martial Artists. He is the Rutgers Orthopaedic resident education site coordinator at Overlook Hospital. Dr. Gehrmann completed his Residency at RutgersNew Jersey Medical School and Fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania.

Restaurateur Susan Hoff berg, the “Suzy” of SuzyQue’s, does not drown her BBQ in sauce. Instead, tables are set with a variety of homemade sauces to tempt every tastebud. From the sweet Habañero Citrus to a rich, traditional Kansas City-style (tomato based) option, smoky Texas-style (molasses based) or a lighter Carolinastyle (vinegar based) choice, diners sample how each compliments and heightens the flavors of the meats. However, all of the dishes already are so well seasoned that they can stand alone. Ready for starters? Dive into SuzyQue’s Signature Smoked Wings ($13), dry rubbed and slow-smoked to perfection. These gems are crispy on the outside and moist on the inside. SuzyQue’s also satisfies a Buffalo wing craving with their one-pound plate ($9), highlighted with just the right amount of kick. For those confounded by all the selections, order the BBQ Combo Platter ($29), and enjoy all the goodness: baby back ribs, St. Louisstyle ribs, sliced brisket, pulled pork and chicken and grilled Andouille sausage. And what is a BBQ place without sides? SuzyQue’s delivers with outstanding Mac and Cheese ($6), smoky collard greens ($5) and the best darn cornbread ($2) this side of the Mississippi. Other alternatives include the wonderfully piquant Jambalaya ($18), featuring smoked chicken and chicken Andouille sausage over rice. At the bar, sliders ($6 during Happy Hour) are a must. These bites of heaven, topped with frizzled onions and cheese, rocket off the charts when combined with the Kansas City-style sauce. The atmosphere at SuzyQue’s is spot on for a BBQ joint: wide-plank wood floors, rolls of paper towels for napkins,

flat screens set to various games and a welcoming bar. SuzyQue’s has drink/ food specials during the week and offers entertainment nightly, from live music to poker and karaoke. Five years ago, Hoff berg traded her 90hour work week in the corporate world for 100+ hours per week at SuzyQue’s, and could not be happier. “Integrity” has been her guiding principle, allowing her to overcome many challenges. She credits her excellent staff, especially General Manager Michael Capadona, her amazing family and loyal customers for SuzyQue’s successes, and looks forward to serving up many more years of BBQ.

Q
uotes have always intrigued me and how they can make you think in new directions. One of my favorite quotes is “Chop wood, it warms you twice.” Warms you while you’re chopping and warms you when you use the wood in a fire. How do you make the most of every moment of time? It’s the most important and valuable asset we own. I always try to think of how each activity I’m involved with will have synergy or impact on other activities and goals I’m working on. It allows my effort to be multiplied. As an example I have a passion for painting and sculpting. The time I spend on painting is relaxing but it also can be used to tie into projects I’m working on so we created the first in a series of FoldzFlat® Pens with inspirational quotes and artwork:
“When something (an affliction) happens to you, you either let it defeat you, or you defeat it…” -Jean-Jacques Rousseau
Barry Farber
“Things turn out best for the people who make the best of the way things turn out.”
“Everyone has inside of him a piece of good news. The good news is that you don’t know -John Wooden how great you can be! How much you can love! What you can accomplish! “I believe a leaf of grass is no less And what your potential is!” than the journey–work of the stars…” -Anne Frank
“When it is dark enough you can see the stars.” -Ralph Waldo Emerson
“Confidence doesn’t come out of nowhere. It is a result of something… hours and days and weeks and years of constant work and dedication.” -Roger Staubach
“In helping others, we shall help ourselves, for whatever good we give out completes the circle and comes back to us.” -Flora Edwards
-Walt Whitman
“Happiness is a by-product. You cannot pursue it by itself.” -Samuel Levenson
“Nothing in life is to be feared. It is only to be understood.” -Marie Curie
“Keep away from people who try to belittle your ambitions. Small people always do that, but the really great make you feel that you, too, can become great.” -Mark Twain
Barry Farber is a radio and television host with expertise in sales and marketing topics, as well as a marketing consultant for corporations, professional athletes, and entertainers.
