Enjoy Family & Food at the Newly Named “La Famiglia”
Montclair Grandmother and Grandson Author a Charming Children’s Book
M
F
ans of The Flying Meatballs Market in East Hanover may have noticed a huge change to the beloved market—a new name. The market is returning to its original name, La Famiglia Italian Gourmet, and will continue to be the home of The Flying Meatballs. With renaming the market, they celebrate both family and the diversity of their menu, which features a huge selection of delicious foods. Patrons of La Famiglia can dine on site for lunch and dinner. In addition they will continue to offer catering services, prepared meals, a full service deli, fresh bakery items, and more. With specials changing every day, there is always a reason to stop in and try something new. Still owned and operated by the Grande family, of Il Capriccio, La Famiglia will continue to provide customers with exceptional products and services. From their Famiglia to yours, buon appetito!
ontclair residents, Judith Schumacher-Tilton Judith Schumacherand Jake Magaldi Tilton and her grandson, Jake Magaldi, are the authors of a new children’s book, The Adventures of Meadowlark and His Passion for Golf, published in July by Woodpecker Press. This is their first book, which began with a “little seed” planted by Judi and came to life through Jake’s creative writing. Because of their shared love for each other and the game of golf, it blossomed into a heartwarming story. This beautifully illustrated book is about a little bird who wants to learn how to play golf and envisions sharing his knowledge with all the other birds. Meadowlark, a bighearted, tiny bird, is different, but you can’t tell by looking at him because he looks just like his brothers and sisters. And like all birds, he loves to sing. But unlike the other birds living in the valley near a golf course called Somerset Pines, Meadowlark is fascinated by the game of golf and determined to learn how to play. This is his story.

Independent Thrift Shop: Celebrating 75 Years
M
adison’s Independent Thrift Shop is coming up on a big anniversary: 75 years in business. The shop began as an auction sale, started by a group of dedicated volunteers from the Madison-Chatham Red Cross Chapter to raise money for an ambulance for the town. When inclement weather “washed out” the sale, The Independent Thrift Shop was born.
An Event for Women of All Ages!
VICINITY MARKETING GROUP Proudly Announces…
Fall 2017
While the shop has moved around over the years, it has remained an independent store selling great items as a way to help others. It enables the public to purchase donated items at reasonable prices, with the net income from sales helping to support many worthwhile organizations including the Alzheimer’s Association and the American Red Cross. Celebrate Independent Thrift Shop’s 75 years of success and servitude at a special anniversary event at the shop on Saturday, October 21 from 2-4pm. Enjoy refreshments as they thank their dedicated volunteers and loyal patrons who have made it all possible.

Ask The Heating & Cooling Experts How important is seasonal maintenance for heating and cooling systems? Seasonal maintenance will protect your system and provide efficient performance, resulting in optimum home comfort. It can catch small problems before they turn into larger, more costly issues and can prevent a serious “in season” breakdown. A maintenance plan also extends the life of your equipment, increases cost effectiveness and ensures safe operation. My heat/air is not working, what do I do? First check if your circuit breaker and emergency switch are in the “on” position. Also, make sure your thermostat is set to the proper function (heat or cool) and that the temperature setting is correct. If these don’t correct the problem, call Air Group and we’ll take it from there. We provide service during normal business hours and after hour emergency service.

In an emergency, our sales team will immediately provide equipment options; different efficiency and price levels. For “no heat” emergencies, we will provide temporary electric heaters until your installation is completed. If your system is antiquated or recently problematic, be proactive and take advantage of our off-season discounts. The work will be done at your convenience and you’ll be ready for the upcoming season. Why should I convert from oil to gas?

Natural gas is an efficient, safe and a reliable fuel source, costs less than oil, and is one of the cleanest-burning fuels available. Converting will reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve air quality in your home, and you will reap the benefits of using the cleanest and least expensive method of home heating. If natural gas is available, we will be your liaison to the provider and oversee the entire project. Why should I hire a licensed plumber?

Closet Space Savers: Maximizing Your Closet Space
The
Decorating Store at Terminal Mill Ends
F
or many of us, our closet tops the list of areas in need of space-saving storage and organization. Here are some quick and easy strategies from The Container Store that will help make your closet feel bigger and a lot more organized. Follow the one-year rule to purge outdated or ill-fitting garments. If you haven’t used it or worn it in a year, it’s safe that you won’t use it again. • Get rid of anything that doesn’t belong in the closet. Move it to another area of the home, donate or sell it. • If possible, move out-of-season garments to another area of your home. The space under your bed is a wonderful solution when you use an underbed storage box. Vacuum-sealed storage bags are also a great solution as they reduce the volume needed to store bulky items by up to 75%. • Take advantage of all vertical space and prevent piles of items from toppling over by using closet organizers like stacking drawers or shelves to store sweaters, shoes and handbags. • Use add-on hangers or cascading hangers, which take up as much space as a single hanger and store four times the amount of clothing. Also consider switching over to slim profile hangers like Huggable Hangers. • Utilize the back of a closet door to store shoes, belts, jewelry and other accessories. • If most of your clothes are short hanging, add an extra closet rod to instantly double the amount of hanging space. • Separate clothing by long-hanging and shorthanging items. Also, color coordinate items to make selecting an outfit easier.

Great Ideas for Your OUTDOOR ENTERTAINING
By Jason Sponzilli
W
hat goes into making a truly entertaining outdoor space? Lush greens and brightly colored flowers… a pool? Or is it the amount of seating options that you have? Summing up what makes an extraordinary entertainment space can’t be narrowed down to one or two things. So, here is a list of the top 10 ideas for making your outdoor area a place you can entertain, relax and have fun!
1
Plants. Trees, shrubs, flowers, and grass all bring life and color to your entertaining space. Unlike most of the other items on this list, the plants in your yard can be changed according to season which will create intrigue and nuances in your surroundings. Pick select areas in your outdoor area that you want to highlight and plant bold colored flowers or shrubs to rein in people’s attention.
2
Pool. Don’t let the naysayers make you doubt it… having a pool in your yard IS like having a little piece of your own heaven. Cool off, have fun, get exercise, it really doesn’t matter- pools are amazingly fun for kids young and old.
3
Fireplace. Constructing a fireplace or fire pit will allow you to entertain long into the night and throughout more of the seasons. A fire element can be used to brighten up the night, cook food, stay warm or keep the bugs away.
4
Outdoor Kitchen. By creating an outdoor kitchen you will be able to keep the entertainment going while you cook. Include a refrigerator in your setup and eliminate trips into the house on hot summer days to get drinks.
5
Pizza Oven. Why go out for brick oven pizza when you can make it yourself! And pizza isn’t the only thing you can cook; use your brick oven as a grill and roast vegetables, cook meat or make a doughy dessert.
6
Outdoor Bar. Build a bar area into your outdoor kitchen or any space in your landscape and experience the feeling of living at a luxury hotel. Make the bar a part of your pool and see how much fun you can have just staying in the water the entire day.
7
Dining Area and Seating. Why go inside to eat when the weather is this nice? Keep the house from becoming a mess and stay outside to eat your brick oven pizza! Create several areas in your space with seating and/or tables so that guests can feel comfortable and break off into groups for smaller conversations. Or, have the kids sit by the pool while you enjoy your soft, cushy chairs near the fireplace.
8
Pergola. Create shade from the sun and cover from the elements by building a pergola or pavilion. On hot summer days getting out of the sun, in between dips in the pool, can be a necessity. Give yourself a place to enjoy the beautiful weather out of the harsh rays.
9
Water Feature. If you want to relax, you need a water feature. Few things can drown out background noise like the trickling sound of a fountain. Establish an ornate or naturalistic focal point with a flowing waterfall or pond with aquatic life.
10
Landscape Lighting. Illuminate your outdoor space to make it useable and safe well into the evening hours. Spotlight an area where there is a water feature or create ambiance in a seating area to engage your guests. Landscape lighting has the ability to make all of the best attributes of your landscape shine and stand apart.

ANEW Kitchen & Bath Design: A Revolutionary Selection of Efficient Products
Vicki Sarracino
By Cynthia Burns, Photo by Dan Epstein
T
here is a revolution in bath and kitchen design, products and technologies and ANEW Kitchen & Bath Design is leading it. Owner Vicki Sarracino explains, “In addition to functionality and quality, there is an emphasis on energy efficient products, green technologies and sustainable materials in design and construction.” She works with leading manufacturers to introduce these products to customers. ANEW is the first LEED-certified bath showroom in the country. Sarracino, an interior designer, brings more than 30 years of experience in the bath and kitchen design industry to ANEW. She sought to create a design center that doesn’t offer the same old, same old. “We offer exclusive, specialty designs from Europe not usually found here.” She describes her product line as inspiring. ANEW specializes in traditional, contemporary and transitional—mid-century, clean-lined—designs for home or business. The design center works with a trusted crew of independent contractors for installation or customers may opt to hire their own contractor.
“We offer a lot of personal attention. No matter how big or small your project is, or if it’s a large space or a small one, it’s important to us,” states Sarracino. The sales staff, experienced in interior design and decorative plumbing, helps customers bring to fruition their vision of the perfect kitchen or bath. Sarracino promises that each project will be unique and customized— one of-a-kind. “You won’t wind up with the same bathroom your neighbor has.” She notes that she handles all aspects of each project so that the customer does not have to. ANEW carries the state’s most complete line of high quality, high performance kitchen and bath products, including accessories. Vanities are manufactured in the United States or Italy and all cabinets are crafted in this country. Sarracino recommends making an appointment before visiting the showroom to ensure customers receive the individualized attention they deserve.

African-American Jazz great Lionel Hampton popularized the vibraphone and played with the racially integrated Benny Goodman Quartet before becoming a successful bandleader in his own right. Small Bits of Fitness Add Up “Where did the day go?” Is this a common question in your life? Many of us jam-pack so much stuff into our daily routines, seemingly there’s no time to relax for just one minute, let alone exercise. Lack of time is one of the most common excuses for not having a decent fitness regimen. But do you realize that in the time it might take you to go through your e-mail, you could fit in a good workout? We’re not talking about giving up 60 minutes either; all you need is 10.

Just 10? Forget the “all or nothing” mentality when it comes to exercise. Fitness does not live or die by 60-minute workouts; there is middle ground. Short spurts of exercise, when they accumulate, have been shown to share similar benefits of longer workouts. Your body will reap numerous benefits just by becoming more active. This approach is perfect for times when you don’t have time for a regular workout, or when you want to start off slowly and build up a routine.

Easier Than You Think Treat these 10 minutes like you would a regular workout. Take one to two minutes to warm up and get the muscles ready, including stretching. Follow with at least seven minutes of exercise at a medium or high intensity. Then make sure to include a 60-second cool down. Since it’s brief, it’s important to work at a fairly high intensity to obtain all of the benefits. Work at raising your heart and respiration rates. Just like regular workouts, try to include cardio, strength training and flexibility work in your shortened routine. Either knock out all three during the 10 minutes, or plan a 10-minute segment for each area. Example: Push out 10 cardio minutes on the stationary bike. For strength, do push-ups, wall sits, or lift dumbbells. For flexibility, it’s helpful to just stretch every day. Work different muscle groups and keep it simple. After 10 minutes, you will feel healthier and be on your way to developing solid fitness habits.

day, broken up into manageable chunks of 10. Start with a quick exercise when you wake up. The second session? A lunch break is possibly the perfect time to re-energize and get the blood flowing again. The last 10-minute blitz could come in the evening, even while you are watching TV. It’s an ideal way to involve the family as well. Go for a power walk after dinner with your spouse or ride bikes with the kids. It is all about convenience; if you try, you can fit exercise into your schedule no matter where you are. Do it at home or at work, outside or in the living room. Start building exercise spurts into your daily routine and you’ll start feeling better. Article reprinted from SparkPeople.com

f you’ve spent any energy devoted to improving your complexion, you may think you understand all the strategies for achieving clear and healthy-looking skin. However, there are some surprising skin care facts you may not know about that can help you rethink your routine. For example, acids in skin care products can mean many different things, and there is often a negative connotation with the ingredient. However, there are many effective ways to work acids into your skincare regimen. • Glycolic acid is the most effective alpha-hydroxy acid, according to dermatologists, due to its small molecule size—allowing it to penetrate deeper, act as an exfoliant to remove dead skin cells and reveal renewed skin. Consider incorporating this acid into your mask routine to smooth skin, reduce the appearance of wrinkles, and allow for smoother application of makeup. Ninety-three percent of women reported skin that felt soft and smooth after just one use of StriVectin Glycolic Skin Reset Mask, a formulation that is paired with a proprietary form of Niacin/ Vitamin B3 called NIA-114, to offer age-fighting benefits. • Oleic acid, an omega-9 fatty acid that replenishes the skin’s lipid layer, is an essential component of skin barrier function, and the foundation of healthy, resilient skin. As skin’s lipids deplete as you age, you may need to actively offer your skin the benefits of this acid. The ingredient will repair visible signs of aging and sooth dry, damaged skin. • Hyaluronic acid, a hydrating molecule that attracts and retains up to 1,000 times its weight in water, is naturally found in skin. As one ages, its presence diminishes, leading to dehydration, fine lines and wrinkles. However, you can rehydrate and replump skin by applying this acid topically. Consider StriVectin Hyaluorinic Dual-Response Serum, which contains six unique forms of hyaluronic acid and should be used under one’s moisturizer. To learn more about incorporating acids into your skin care routine, visit strivectin.com. Remember, it’s all about balance—pH balance that is. So, don’t shy away from a skin care routine that uses acids, just do so wisely to achieve the right effect. —StatePoint Photo source: © Goodluz/stock.Adobe.com

r. Alexandra Popescu, DDS, GP of All Dental Arts in Berkeley Heights specializes in cosmetic, general, laser and preventative dentistry for adults and children. Dr. A (as her patients and staff call her) believes that creating a healthy, beautiful smile is best achieved by a seamless blend of art and science, administered with the highest standards, good affordability, and utilizing the latest of technologies, including laser therapy, digital x-ray, and state of the art dental materials. Dr. A is adamant in promoting health and general well being, not just aesthetics when treating a smile. “I work with my patients and listen to their goals to achieve beautiful results with comfort, and integrity. These are the cornerstones of my practice,” she states. This focus on patient centered care has created lifelong relationships with many of those who step out of her office rejuvenated with a new smile. She adds, “A healthy beautiful smile will enhance your appearance, improve your confidence, and help maintain your overall health.” Patients feel completely at ease with Dr. A’s gentle and minimally invasive touch. When working with children in her practice for instance, she begins oral health education immediately and she uses the Tell-Show-Do method for procedures. “I talk with the children before I examine them, showing them everything that will be done, and then I guide them along the way,” Dr. A explains. This communication creates a bond that ensures children feel comfortable from the start, and look forward to meeting their dentist again. A graduate of NYU College of Dentistry Advanced Standing Program, Dr. A also graduated from the University of Medicine and Pharmacy/Carol Davila College of Dentistry, Bucharest, Romania and has more than 18 years of experience in Europe and the United States. She co-authored a book in aesthetic dentistry and was a researcher on atraumatic restorative treatment used in pediatric dentistry. Dr. A is also an active member of the American Dental Association, New Jersey Dental Association and the Academy of Laser Dentistry. Additionally, she pursues continuing education courses for professional development to ensure that her patients receive the most advanced treatments in dentistry.

Diamond Minds
The Confidence Factor 3 KEYS TO BUILDING A STRONG FOUNDATION By, Barry Farber
Barry Farber
H
on any challenge, the first thing I do is research, research on the product, the industry or the individual. The more I learn about the value and offering of what I’m taking on, the greater my confidence becomes. It builds strength in what I’m proposing. And if I can’t see the value in what I’m taking on, I won’t...and that can be the best decision of all.
aving a strong purpose with passion and belief behind what you’re doing allows you to move forward more efficiently. When we start doubting our abilities, and ourselves it begins to impact our performance. Some business owners and managers often ask me to include a portion of training on how to build their sales teams confidence. Maybe it’s because they are bombarded with lots of no’s and rejection, and the impact it has on their presentations. Anyone can benefit from building their confidence, but it has to be based on strong values and a belief system that brings benefits along with your actions. Some people feel a quiet confidence has more power because there is a calmness and comfort level in how they present themselves. If I had to look at three of the top keys to building and maintaining confidence they would include: • Continuous Learning. Learning something new always enhances your enthusiasm and drive. When I’m asked to look at someone’s invention, represent a company that wants to gain access to new industries or take
• Constant Action. We learn from our actions…we act from our learning. One without the other suffers; both together provide clarity and truth. No matter how much research we do or how much planning is involved, it is in the action where reality exists. The greatest accomplishments happen when someone takes action on something that they’re told cannot be done. The right action brings you closer to your goals and the confidence that something positive will come from it. • Selective Environment. Who you surround yourself with will have an immediate and long-term effect on your performance. In sports we tend to play up to or down to our competition.
Be careful whom you select as your mentors and advisors. You elevate your success when you choose your environment wisely. Sometimes the ones pulling us down are the ones closest to us. It can lead to some of the hardest decisions to make when choosing our environment. What you think about and whom you surround yourself with determines a large portion of your overall confidence. But with great confidence comes great caution. It is the ability to use your knowledge and skill at the right time. Over confidence and pride can lead to your downfall. We must avoid one of the greatest dangers of all…hubris.
“Confidence doesn’t come out of nowhere. It is a result of something… Hours and days and weeks and years of constant work and dedication.” -Roger Staubach
