Florham Park Resident Honored for Volunteer Work

Millburn Seniors Selected as National Merit Semifinalists

E

ighteen Millburn High School seniors have been selected as semifinalists in the 2019 National Merit Scholarship Competition. Millburn High School Principal Dr. William Miron announced this September that students William Cerulli, Alexander Chen, Andrew Chen, Rachel Cifu, Julian Fox, Katharine Fox, Tejas Gupta, Arnold Jia, Max Koenig, Helen Liu, Rahul Prakash, John Sanchez, Armaan Singh, Sanjana Sinkar, Ariel Stein, Warren Xia, Katherine Zhong and Brian Zhu were all honored with the national merit.

Irene Fortunato

F

lorham Park resident Irene Fortunato was recently honored for her volunteer efforts at Morristown Medical Center. The 94-year-old has been a dedicated volunteer with the hospital for the last twenty years, and has performed a number of various volunteer services over the years. Irene was awarded the President’s Lifetime Achievement Award for her work.

The students are among 16,000 semifinalists across the country, as the highest-scoring entrants in each state on the 2017 PSAT/NMSQT. These academically talented high school seniors have the opportunity to continue in the national competition for some 7,500 National Merit Scholarships, worth more than $32 million, that will be offered next spring.

Today, Irene’s volunteer work focuses on handling flower delivery and distributions. The lifetime award requires that volunteers have logged at least 4,000 hours; Irene far exceeds the requirement, with over 29,000 hours logged. The President’s Volunteer Service Award is an initiative of the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS). Points of Light administers the award through an initiative with CNCS.

Madison Place Celebrates Grand Opening

A

brand-new collection of luxury condominiums held its grand opening this past month, making its official debut in Madison. Located in the heart of the vibrant downtown area, Madison Place is just steps away from the community’s train station and charming Main Street. At the time of the grand opening celebration on September 16, 50 percent of the 35-condominium residence was already sold. For the grand opening, Madison Place’s array of one-, two- and three-bedroom residences, as well as the community’s professionally-landscaped grounds and courtyard, were on full display. “We are proud to debut Madison Place to the public and are thrilled that it is already being embraced by home buyers,” said Les Newlands, a builder representative for Coldwell Banker New Homes.

The community was designed to offer residents a lifestyle of comfort and convenience, with open floorplans, classic interior features and upscale finishes. The five-story brick building borders the suburban neighborhood but is just one block away from downtown Madison.

Toy Professor Celebrates 15 Years

F

ifteen years after opening their Summit store, the Toy Professor continues to be a special place where customers love to shop. The toy store, which recently celebrated its fifteenth anniversary, is well known for being a place for kids to play, learn, and explore. The bright and cheery store features demonstration toys so children can try out the toys that are for sale, as well as a large play area in the back with kitchens, tents, dolls, vehicles, and more. Says the Toy Professor himself, owner Geoffrey Stern, “We have established special relationships with our customers and are part of the fabric of the community, supporting all the area schools and many other charitable entities. My kids and a generation of neighborhood kids grew up together and now we are on to the next generation growing up around us.” With fifteen years down, the store continues to grow: “Our primary focus is still on unique, cool items and award winning toys; in the internet age we have

become more attuned to the specific needs of customers and now stock things like Barbie dolls, Hot Wheels and whatever the latest trends are. We have also moved more into trendy gift items for tween girls.”

Local Practice Receives Honorable Award from American Cancer Society

T

he Silverstrom Group, a cosmetic dental practice in Livingston, was named the recipient of the American Cancer Society’s 15th Annual Jody A. Morrow Humanitarian Award. The award is given to those that exhibit the cancer survivor and ACS volunteer’s generous, compassionate and courageous nature. As supporters and advocates of the American Cancer Society, the Silverstrom Group was inspired to donate their medical expertise. Dr. David Silverstrom and Dr. Gary Silverstrom brought their philanthropic vision to life when they partnered with the ACS and established the Smiles for Life Award in 2014. The award rehabilitates mouth functionality and helps restore the survivor’s confidence through repairing and restoring their smile after the effects of cancer treatments. Each year, the recipient is given a cosmetic dental makeover and a highly anticipated “smile reveal” takes place at the American Cancer Society’s Diamond Ball. This year, for the first time in its five year history, the Smiles for Life Award was given to not one, but two brave recipients–sisters Josephine and Barbara. Doctors David and Gary Silverstrom were so touched by their story that they chose to give both of the sisters complete smile makeovers.

Dr. David Silverstrom and Dr. Gary Silverstrom

“The most important work we are ever able to do is give back to our community,” states co-founder Dr. Gary Silverstrom. “We are proud to partner with the American Cancer Society with the Smiles for Life Award. It is truly our honor to help restore the smiles of these brave survivors.”

Healthy at HOME HOW TO IMPROVE INDOOR AIRFLOW AND QUALITY FAMILY FEATURES

M

ore efficient, tightly built homes than those constructed in previous generations are generally well-regarded, for the most part with good reason. However, when you consider people spend 90 percent of their time indoors on average, according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), such airtight environments raise some concerns.

Limited fresh air and light during the day can negatively impact mood, sleep and performance. Air pollution can also pose a health risk through irritation to the eyes, nose and throat; headaches, dizziness and fatigue; and respiratory conditions, heart disease and cancer. To help alleviate some of these concerns, consider these tips.

All that efficiency cuts down on airflow, effectively trapping allergens and toxins inside. According to estimates from the EPA, the air inside the average home may be as much as five times more polluted than the air outdoors, even in a bustling city.

Bring the outside in.

“We know instinctively that spending so many hours in stuffy places isn’t good for us,” said Peter Foldbjerg, head of daylight energy and indoor climate at Velux. “According to research, living in damp and moldy homes increases our risk of asthma by 40 percent and leaves us vulnerable to developing other ailments.” 26

Vicinity Magazine

October 2018

Even a small step like adding some potted plants, which are known to purify air, can improve your indoor environment. In addition, think of how you could create a better view to the outside through smart use of windows, skylights and doors that bring in fresh air and daylight.

Rely on natural air flow. Open your windows 3-4 times a day, at least 10 minutes at a time, to allow fresh air in. To complement natural light and fresh air from vertical windows, consider adding skylights to rooms you use most often.

Skylights that can be opened, such as those offered by Velux, contribute to greater indoor comfort and ventilation by removing excess heat, moisture, odors and other indoor pollutants. They can also help reduce the need for air-conditioning due to the chimney effect, which occurs when skylights and vertical windows are both opened, allowing warm, stale air to rise and escape through the roof, replaced by fresh air drawn in through traditional windows.

Eliminate potential obstacles. Avoid blocking fresh air with drapes, blinds and other hindrances, like heavy furniture placed too close to windows. Also consider other aspects of your home that could be thwarting your efforts to improve air circulation and quality, such as dust, dirt and mold. Regular and thorough cleaning can help keep those irritants at bay and make your quest for cleaner air easier. Find more tips for creating a healthier home at veluxusa.com/indoorgeneration.

I N C R E A S I N G N AT U R A L L I G H T Sunlight is a natural antidepressant, and there is ample scientific evidence that associates daylight with better health and quality of life, such as improved mood, less fatigue and reduced eye strain. If your home needs some brightening up, consider these home features with natural light in mind:

Paint Choosing a lighter-colored paint and avoiding statement wallpaper or large blocks of color can naturally make a space feel brighter and reflect any natural light entering the room. Think soft shades of off-white or subdued, neutral hues.

Flooring Wooden, ceramic or stone floors with a polished finish typically reflect light to help brighten spaces. If you prefer carpet, consider light, neutral colors to help make the space feel brighter.

Skylights Adding skylights is a relatively low-cost, high-impact home improvement that can enhance home decor and deliver energysaving benefits, as well. Fresh air skylights, like those from Velux, can help reduce dependence on artificial lighting and mechanical ventilation, which helps save money on electric bills. Convenience features like remote control operation make it easy to manage air flow and natural lighting with the touch of a button.

Mirrors Adding furniture and accessories with reflective surfaces can help diffuse light and add stylish touches throughout the home. Metallic, glass and mirrored accessories, or even mirrors themselves, can spread light throughout your home.

Lighting Go easy on artificial lighting, and instead work to optimize natural light sources. Consider supplementing areas where natural light doesn’t reach such as corners and corridors with small lamps, and install dimmer switches that can easily be adjusted depending on the amount of natural light flowing into your home.

Creating Cleaner Indoor Air Creating Cleaner Indoor Air Creating more airflow is an important step to improving your indoor environment, but considerations like air quality should not be overlooked. More air is a good thing, but more clean air is better yet. Everyday home life activities such as cooking, showering, lighting candles, sleeping and doing laundry can all contribute to polluted indoor air, which over time can lead to the development of illnesses. These tips from the indoor climate experts at Velux can help make the air inside your home healthier: 1. Keep bathroom doors closed and turn on the extractor fan or open a window or skylight when showering. 2. Turn the hood fan on when cooking and open your windows, if weather permits. 3. Avoid burning candles excessively; look for alternatives such as sprigs of lavender to add a natural fresh scent. 4. Dry clothes outside when possible, which reduces carbon emissions from the dryer and minimizes potential pollutants traveling through the dryer vent. 5. Clean regularly with non-chemical based cleaning products, and pay attention to ingredients in cleaning products that may create hazardous fumes. October 2018

A Surprising Solution for Stress Relief

A

From finances and health concerns to lengthy to-do lists, there are numerous sources of strain in the lives of most people.

ccording to a survey conducted by Wakefield Research, 68 percent of people feel stress on a weekly basis and 32 percent are stressed every day. Women, in particular, are impacted, as 25 percent surveyed reported experiencing stress multiple times a day. However, today there is a surprisingly simple way to relieve stress: flowers. New research from the University of North Florida’s Department of Public Health shows that living with flowers can significantly alleviate daily stress. These findings follow decades of behavioral research studies conducted by researchers at universities including Harvard, Rutgers and Texas A&M that demonstrate flowers’ ability to make people happy, strengthen feelings of compassion, foster creativity and even provide boosts of energy. The study, titled The Impact of Flowers on Perceived Stress Among Women, concludes that adding flowers to indoor environments results in a statistically significant and meaningful reduction in stress. “There is a growing body of research that illustrates how environmental design positively impacts health,” said lead researcher Erin Largo-Wight, Ph.D., associate professor of the University of North Florida’s Department of Public Health. “Now it is both intuitive and scientifically known that adding elements of nature, like flowers, to interiors promotes well-being.”

The specific results include: • The average reduction in stress among women who received and lived with flowers was minus-5.5 points on the perceived stress questionnaire, a significant statistical decrease in stress. • Flowers are a unique gift with the proven potential to reduce stress among women, likely because flowers provide the opportunity for nature contact, an established healthpromoting environmental exposure. • Participants who received flowers overwhelmingly reported that flowers improved their moods. “Our findings are important from a public health perspective because adding flowers to reduce stress does not require tremendous effort to generate a meaningful effect,” Largo-Wight said. “When life seems to be in a constant state of frenzy, flowers can provide a much-needed moment of calm.” For more information about the study, along with tips on relieving stress, visit aboutflowers.com/stressless. —Family Features October 2018

Diamond Minds

It’s About Time By Barry Farber

Are there times when you say you have no time for physical training? I would like to share some ideas that can be incorporated into your daily routine so a day doesn’t go by without some type of exercise. There is a saying I like to use… ”Chop wood, it warms you twice.” Warms you while you’re chopping and then it warms you from the fire. You get two for one. Here are some examples: 1. How long does it take you to brush your teeth? One minute? Three minutes? Next time you brush your teeth I’d like you to stand in a horse stance while you’re brushing your teeth. It’s a great way to improve strength and stability in your legs while you improve your posture.

advantage of having my hands free for holding a metal bar.

4. Convert every room to an instant gym. I’ve set up my office and my home so that most of the rooms have several ways to workout while I’m in that room or just passing by. I have all types of weights, pull-up bars and weighted weapons hanging on the wall for immediate use. I’m a little extreme but this method has many benefits: This makes it interesting by having so many different workouts at my fingertips. I also don’t get bored of doing the same thing all the time.

2. When you’re waiting for a train or even taking a shower (carefully) see how long you can stand on one foot. Terrific way to maintain one’s balance and equilibrium. We need that no matter what age. 3. I have a small but heavy chair that I can use for core exercises in a horse stance and then add weights to my arms for additional resistance. These rings provide the

Out of sight...out of mind. By surrounding yourself with many exercise options you tend to do it more often. I make a game out if it. If I have to go to another room and the pull-up bar separates the rooms I can’t enter without a minimum of 5 pull-ups or a long stretch. That’s a whopping 6 seconds. The real key to this is being creative with everything around you and keeping disciplined with a method for continuing the activity. There is no one way. Going to the gym an hour a day is also an amazing way to keep fit. It’s about time.
