the charlie daniels band & marshall tucker band to perform
F
rom his Dove Award winning gospel albums to his genredefining Southern rock anthems and his CMA Awardwinning country hits, few artists have left a more indelible mark on America’s musical landscape than Charlie Daniels. An outspoken patriot, beloved mentor to young artists and still a road warrior at age 81, Charlie has parlayed his passion for music into a multi-platinum career and a platform to support the military, underprivileged children and others in need.
The Marshall Tucker Band came together as a young, hungry, and quite driven six-piece outfit in Spartanburg, South Carolina in 1972, having duly baptized themselves with the name of a blind piano tuner after they found it inscribed on a key to their original rehearsal space — and they’ve been in tune with tearing it up on live stages both big and small all across the globe ever since. The secret ingredient to the ongoing success of The Marshall Tucker Band can be found within a cauldron of musical styles that mixes together equal parts rock, blues, jazz, country, soul, and bluegrass. Tickets for these two great Southern Rock Bands of all time featuring fiddle master Charlie Daniels (“The Devil Went Down to Georgia”) and The Marshall Tucker Band (“Can’t You See,” “Heard It in a Love Song”) are now on sale and will sell out fast!

Park Avenue Club:
Where Culinary Experiences Benefit a Great Cause
T
he Park Avenue Club (PAC) in Florham Park, NJ is truly special. It’s a family-oriented, charitable dining and social club where new members and those who have been members for years, some for generations, mingle, enjoy meals and activities – and most importantly, friendships. Aside from being a social club, PAC has a charitable impact via The Park Avenue Foundation (PAF) to support 10 regional non-profits. Since 1994, over $6 million has been distributed to such non-profits by PAF.
The Club, which boasts nearly 1,000 corporate, individual and family members, offers daily breakfast, lunch and dinner in two exquisite private settings—one informal and the other more upscale. Each has a separate mouthwatering menu. Members are invited to frequent these dining areas with family, friends, colleagues and clients. Dining at Park Avenue Club rivals the best the tri-state has to offer. A diverse wine list and drinks curated by an on-site mixologist, are spot on. And they take personalized dining to the next level. “As a Private members Club, we truly want to know our members’ food and beverage preferences, allergies and more. Unlike a typical restaurant experience, more unique and intimate memories can be developed here,” according to Executive Director, Gregory Smith. There is also a robust social calendar with special themed events for people of all ages, interests and tastes. Members enjoy many social clubs including Book Club, Cigar and Wine Enthusiasts. Activities include live music on weekends, along with daily al fresco dining patios in season. And that’s not all—after the recent construction of a $7.5 million, 14,200 sq. ft. events wing, Park Avenue Club boasts a gorgeous state-of-the-art ballroom that holds over 400 seated guests. Six additional private spaces are ideal for any type of event from small meetings to weddings, mitzvahs and corporate gatherings.

Like Montclair native Steve Kelly’s sculptural paintings, the simple title — “brutal” — strikes viewers as confrontational, but upon closer examination it’s meaning is both layered and complex. He incorporates physical objects such as commercial ads, plastic bags, money, and printed reproductions, crumpling then lacquering them to create exquisite sculptural surfaces paired with layers of traditional oil painting and energetic splashes of color. The CUSTOMIZED
Mommy Makeover T
he mommy makeover procedure addresses the consequences of pregnancies on a woman’s body. This typically includes combining cosmetic breast procedures and tummy tuck, but many also include liposuction and fat grafting. Here, Scott Spiro, M.D., F.A.C.S. of Spiro Plastic Surgery discusses this customized procedure.
What do you mean by “customized”? No two bodies are alike, and no two people have the same objective. There are numerous variations of tummy tucks, some including abdominal wall (diastasis or hernia) repairs, and others are skin only or even circumferential torso (body lift). Additionally, breast procedures may involve lifting, implant augmentation, non-implant augmentation (autoaugmentation), reductions or a combination of these. So, I fit the procedure to each person’s needs and desires.
You have patients come to you from all over the US and around the globe. What do you attribute this too? Each town has a Facebook “Moms” chat group. Additionally, medical and Google review sites, Instagram, our testimonials, and website photos have certainly spread the word. When an out of town patient has a positive experience and expresses it, it empowers and gives confidence to others. For instance, we recently found an online review site, topplasticsurgeonreviews.com, that compiled reviews from many review sites and ranked us #1 among all area plastic surgeons.
You have a commitment to safety along with excellence. Please explain. I believe these combinations are best performed in a hospital setting with overnight stay. There is no dollar value that can be placed on safety. From high skilled nursing support both during surgery and in recovery phase, to extraordinary top-level anesthesia care, in a safe, secure, well equipped, comforting, state of the art facility, our patient experience is second to none.
Scott Spiro, M.D., F.A.C.S.
Can you describe the recovery of the mommy makeover procedures? Again, this will vary based on which type of tummy tuck or body lift procedure is done. Skin only procedures allow for quicker recovery (a week back to work and several weeks for fitness) whereas a complete abdominoplasty including abdominal wall repair will require another week of acute recovery and longer until fitness begins. The various breast procedures performed with the abdominal restorations (in general) are not significantly impactful with regards to recovery.
Final thoughts and recommendations for prospective patients? Do your homework. Ask your friends. Ask your doctors (i.e. gynecologist) whom they recommend. Visit websites to look at results and read testimonials. Set aside realistic time to recover and have a support system in place to aid in the initial short-term recovery.

Diet & Exercise Are Key for Healthy Bones By Julie Jacobs
T
o support and protect—that’s the job of the human skeleton’s 206 bones. It’s a lifelong task that requires bones to continually rebuild themselves, forming new cells and strengthening weak spots. And like most body processes, this “reconstruction” slows down with age, sometimes with adverse results. Statistics show that one in two women and one in four men over 50 will suffer a fracture from osteoporosis, a chronic condition characterized by low bone density and deficits in calcium and other minerals that render bones brittle and highly breakable. Bone density is measured as a T-score via low-radiation x-ray. A T-score below -1 is cause for concern and requires medical consultation. Fortunately, you can reduce your chances of developing osteoporosis by eating well and exercising regularly.
Food-wise
Ingesting enough calcium, along with Vitamin D, is critical to bone health. But how much do you need and what foods offer these valuable nutrients? According to the Institute of Medicine (IOM), which revised its long-standing recommendations in 2010, adults 19 to 50 need 1,000 mg of calcium daily and 1,200 mg daily for adults 51 and over. For children, the suggested dietary allowance is 700 mg between one and three years of age; 1,000 mg between four and eight; and 1,300 mg between nine and 18. For Vitamin D, which helps the body absorb calcium, the IOM recommends 600 IU per day from age one to 70. This figure increases to 800 IU for those over 70. Dairy products and leafy greens (both cooked and raw) are particularly high in calcium and Vitamin D, so incorporate items like low-fat or fat-free yogurt, milk and cheese and vegetables like broccoli, spinach and kale into your diet. Other good sources include salmon, sardines, oysters, lean chicken and beans. You can also include whole-grain breads and pastas, which provide magnesium, another mineral that helps maintain bone strength. But because whole grains can interfere with calcium absorption, experts advise not eating them simultaneously with calcium-rich foods. And stay away from caffeine, sugar and high protein as much as possible, as they can actually cause the body to excrete calcium. 32
Vicinity Magazine
October 2019
If you’re unable to get enough calcium and Vitamin D from your diet, supplements and herbs may provide a solution and can be purchased at health food stores and some drug stores. Take the suggested dosage, ideally at a time of day when you have not just eaten foods high in calcium. As for herbs, try adding alfalfa, barley grass, dandelion root, nettle or parsley to your diet. They can be taken in various forms, all of which help build bone.
Exercise-wise
Believe it or not, bones last longer if you place greater stress on them. Weight-bearing routines that involve weight lifting, walking, running, hiking and dancing are best for strengthening bones. These activities, done three to four times a week, have been shown to boost bone density in the upper body and upper thighs, which are particularly prone to fractures when bones are weakened. While any exercise is better than no exercise, people with osteoporosis should not use excessively heavy weights or engage in overly vigorous activity, which can put them at a higher risk for fractures. What cannot be stressed enough is that a focus on building healthy bones is advantageous at any age, the younger the better, of course. And whenever you begin an exercise regimen, or choose to add herbs or supplements to your diet, speak with your physician first to ensure that you make the right decisions for your health.
