Bilingual Buds Changes Name to HudsonWay Immersion School
B
ilingual Buds, New Jersey and New York’s first independent day school specializing in immersion education, is excited to announce that it has changed its name to HudsonWay Immersion School (HWIS). Founder Sharon Huang explains the name (HWIS) “better communicates who we are as a school now that we extend beyond preschool to grades K-5.” HWIS’ roots are firmly established with its two campuses located on either side of the Hudson River—one in suburban Summit, New Jersey and the other on Manhattan’s Upper West Side. This past spring HWIS added new educational leaders with extensive backgrounds in immersion education to its administration. HWIS begins immersing children in an environment as early as age 2, which helps to maximize their ability to learn a second language. They provide an academically rich and differentiated K-5 program that enables students to learn content in two languages—Mandarin and Spanish. In addition to full day programs, HudsonWay Immersion School also provides after school programs with flexible schedules. Upcoming open houses for prospective parents are Saturday, November 22 and Friday, December 12 at 10am. The school is located at 587 Springfield Avenue in Summit, NJ. For more information, visit their website www.hwis.org or call 908-598-8088.

T
he Kent Place Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of artworks by Lauren Portada through November 21, 2014. Portada’s works in this show are large scale, brilliantly colored paintings. What appear to be challenging abstractions are also deeply tied to specific thoughts about nature. According to Kent Place Gallery Director Ken Weathersby, “Portada’s work is made with full awareness of the possibilities of color married to the physicality of paint as a special kind of matter in contact with its support (a fabric like linen, canvas or jute). the physical environment and the nature of painting.” Kent Place Gallery is on the campus of Kent Place School, 42 Norwood Avenue, Summit, NJ. Gallery hours are Monday–Friday, 9am-4pm. For more information call 908-273-0900, or visit www.kentplace.org/gallery.

Chairs with the Power to Transform
I
n celebration of their tenth anniversary, the JSDD’s Wae Center (Wellness, Arts & Enrichment) has commissioned and created the Chairs of Inclusion program—10 Artists, 62 Collaborators, 1 Idea… A Seat at the Table for Everyone. The chairs represent objects of art that inspire people to change their perceptions about what individuals with disabilities can accomplish. To create the life-size chairs, professional New Jersey artists brought their concepts and materials to the Wae Center and worked alongside the Center’s artists—adults with developmental disabilities. These chairs are a testimony to the talents that oftentimes lay hidden in people with special needs. For more information about the project and the artists’ experiences visit www.chairsofinclusion.org. At the Wae Center, members explore avenues for maximizing independence and achieving personal fulfillment through writing, painting, film, music, yoga and more. Easy Thanksgiving Versatile Chardonnay One of the primary reasons chardonnay is at the top of a Thanksgiving wine list is the flexibility inherent in America’s most popular white wine grape. Chardonnay flavor profiles can range from fruit-forward with bright acidity to big, rich and opulent. In either case, it’s the right white for the job. Gary Fisch of Gary’s Wine & Marketplace with locations in Madison, Bernardsville and Wayne states, “The rich foods of the Thanksgiving table can overwhelm many white wines, but a lush rich Chardonnay has the body and flavor to match the intensity of flavors, and still refresh the palate. If you prefer white meat and lighter fare, choose a lively chardonnay with notes of citrus, like the La Crema Sonoma Coast Chardonnay. With aromas of lemon drop, yellow apple and subtle toasted oak, this wine pairs beautifully with breast meat and balances dishes like creamy potatoes or roasted carrots. lf darker meat is your preference, consider a richer style with a lush texture and spicy notes that can hold up to the more intense flavors of the wing and leg meat.
G
athering friends and family over a delicious meal is often a highlight of the holiday season. As you start to plan your menu for the big day, remember to consider which wines you’ll offer as perfect pairings for your favorite dishes. Whether you’re preparing a traditional feast or planning to fill the table with new harvest-inspired recipes, food writers and wine connoisseurs agree—chardonnay and pinot noir are the ultimate Thanksgiving wines.

THANKSGIVINGTraditions Pleasing Pinot Pinot noir is the perfect addition to any party because it pleases a lot of palates and doesn’t overwhelm classic Thanksgiving food. Fisch adds, “Pinot Noir, with its combination of bright fruit and earthy undertones serves as a classic foil to the range of flavors from cranberry sauce to root vegetables to richly herbed stuffing.” Like chardonnay, there’s a pinot noir that complements almost any menu. A darker, concentrated pinot noir will hold up to deeper flavors, while a more vibrant, juicy wine such as the La Crema Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir is a great option for pairing with the variety of flavors of delicious side dishes that a Thanksgiving feast delivers. Not only will it pair well with both dark and light meat, but its sweet spice and classic earthy notes resonate well with the savory herbs often seen in holiday dishes.

Serving Wines To best showcase the wines you select, it’s important to serve them at the right temperature. With just a few adjustments, you can bring out the best in your favorite wine’s unique flavor profile, character and bouquet. White wine is best when served between 45 and 50∞F. Served too cold, the flavors and aromas will be masked, and served too warm they become flat. Conversely, in general, red wines should be served a bit warmer, between 55 and 65∞F. A colder serving temperature will make a red wine seem excessively acidic, and warmer will bring out an overly alcoholic flavor. Chill room-temperature pinot noir for 10-15 minutes in the refrigerator before serving. To explore more wine pairing, serving and storage tips, visit www.lacrema.com. —Family Features

Julio Angel Hair Studio Opens in Verona to Accommodate Their Ever Growing Business
T
his October marks four years since the Julio Angel Hair Studio opened in New Jersey at its first location. Recently Julio Angel Hair Studio moved to 146 Bloomfield Avenue in Verona to accommodate its rapidly growing clientele. “We are used to having one to two new clients a month and now we are approaching 75 new clients this month at the new location,” says Julio Angel, of his quickly expanding business. The new 1,500 square-foot space in Verona is more than two times as large as the previous space in Little Falls. Angel worked in New York City for seven years at a salon on Madison Avenue, which he refers to as “being in a pressure cooker,” because there was so much to learn - and it had to be learned quickly to keep up with the pace of his clients. After seven years of work and training, Angel decided to take his love for hair to New Jersey, where he could offer his clients New York City skills at a fraction of the price. Today, Angel has clients all around the country, as well as internationally, who appreciate not only his talent, but the atmosphere of the Julio Angel Hair Studio experience. Upon entering the studio each client is greeted by friendly staff and offered a beverage before having a consultation with his or her stylist. The focus is wholeheartedly on the service that customers receive. Trained by Angel from the very beginning, stylists have started as assistants and worked their way up, creating a “sense of family” among staff. Angel refers to his studio as a “hair spa” because it is a place that has a quiet and relaxing vibe, unlike many other salons. Stylists and clients both feel comfortable and relaxed during their
time together. Brow design and eyelash extensions, in their evergrowing popularity, are done by Jannet and now stand beside hair services on the list of what the salon has to offer. Specialists Anne and Christine offer Keratin treatments to reduce frizz and dryness. Also popular are Great Length Extensions and Hot Heads Tape. Hot Heads Tape extensions provide instant gratification as clients have a new, fuller, longer head of hair in 45 minutes. The studio’s Esthetician, Jackeline, uses a facial scanner and analysis machine before every facial to show what is happening underneath the skin in order to provide a facial that works from the inside out. Angel recognizes that time is precious and works with clients to get them in and out, without feeling rushed. An exceptionally large draw comes from the studio’s use of products by a European-based company called UNITE, which are 100% vegan without parabens or sulfates and help to preserve hair color. Julio Angel and his wife, Joselyn, who is an Iraqi veteran, own the studio. Julio Angel Hair Studio very much appreciates the service and sacrifice of our veterans and welcomes all veterans to the studio. The salon has much to offer anyone who walks in its doors, most importantly personalized customer service, and is welcoming new clients to its new Verona location.

You are the heart of Federation.
A talking tree greets visitors and introduces the state-of-the-art model train exhibition, which features three separate tracks. The trains move through a world of imagination as they travel through a town with shops, cars, and people busy with activity, including a fire truck and crew extinguishing a fire. Bright ‘neon’ (L.E.D.) billboards and shop signs lend a contemporary touch to the landscape. Hands-on activities allow children to explore the sights and sounds of train travel and safety, or to imagine themselves as the engineer, lifting an arm and tugging on a whistle. The Morris Museum, 6 Normandy Heights Road, Morristown. 973-971-3700 www. morrismuseum.org
The Guinness Collection of Instruments & Automata The exhibition features over 150 pieces from its world-renowned Murtogh D. Guinness collection of mechanical musical instruments and automata. Largely dating to the 19th century, these ingenious objects once brought animated, musical entertainment to private settings and public places. Now, through video and audio technology, hands-on activities and live demonstrations of select instruments, visitors can see and hear these beautiful and intriguing historic objects and experience for themselves a largely lost chapter in entertainment history. Live demos Tuesday-Sunday 2pm. The Morris Museum, 6 Normandy Heights Road, Morristown. 973-971-3700 www. morrismuseum.org

The Challenges of
FAMILY CAREGIVING
By Julie Jacobs
34
Vicinity Magazine
While the conditions and circumstances may vary, more than 65 million Americans—29% of the population, accounting for 31% of U.S. households—are family caregivers. According to one study, family caregivers average 20 hours of care weekly, usually for four or more years. Two-thirds are women between the ages of 40 and 60 years old, caring for a relative, often a parent, who is elderly, frail, disabled and/or chronically ill. With longevity steadily increasing, the caregiver burden is certain to rise and last much longer than it did just a decade or two ago. November 2014
N
ovember is National Caregivers Month, which shines a spotlight on the enormous responsibilities and inherent tolls involved in caring for a loved one. While most family care giving takes place in the home, these duties and stresses can have a substantial impact on the entire family. Family care giving can lead to a lack of privacy for all family members, particularly the primary caregiver. This can also be true in cases where the person being cared for suffers from Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia and is no longer able to respect boundaries. The almost round-the-clock care also can interfere with normal family routines. Additionally, managing matters like incontinence, falls, wandering and irrational behavior, along with administering medications and helping with daily hygiene, can prove overwhelming.
Words of Advice Fortunately, there are ways to make the process easier on all who are involved. There are also resources to give everyone in the family welcome and necessary time off. To address those privacy issues, for example, try providing your loved one with his/her own space, a television, a bed and a comfortable chair. Install alarms to alert you when the person being cared for attempts to wander outside the home, and put up railings and bars to help prevent falls. You can arrange for a caseworker to visit and recommend other modifications and equipment that could be helpful. You also can inquire about Medicare home health benefits that can cover some of the costs. In general, keep track of all medications to avoid mistakes that can lead to re-hospitalization, make sure medical history is up to date and legal documents are in order, and always speak with your loved one’s physician about any concerns or questions you may have. Perhaps most importantly, take care of yourself. Family caregivers often put their own wellness “on the back burner” as they see to the needs of others. Care giving is difficult work that can cause you to become physically rundown, mentally exhausted and even ill yourself. Ask for assistance from friends and family, and seek out self-help tools and educational guidance from community agencies. Also, join a support group where you can connect with other caregivers who can truly empathize and share stories and ideas. And if you find yourself slipping into a depression—a common risk for those caring for a loved one with dementia—go see a counselor.

Still other options for support include: • Respite care, which enables you to take breaks (from just a few hours to several weeks or months) to meet other responsibilities or get away for a bit while feeling secure that your relative is receiving the necessary attention. • Adult daycare, which allows your loved one to spend the day supervised at a specially equipped facility. Services may include medication administration and transport to medical appointments. • In-home care, which offers a range of services provided by trained caregivers who can help you with things like hygiene, mobility, light housework and meal preparation, socialization and transportation. • Social workers, who can assist you in accessing a variety of helpful resources. T
he environment’s natural elements can take a toll on the body. However, taking time to refill what has been depleted from your body, such as moisturizing skin and hair, can make you feel healthier and more beautiful. A similar approach can also help make your teeth stronger and make your smile healthier. Though busy days may make extensive health and beauty routines feel unrealistic, there are simple ways to make them more manageable. • Think of the time you dedicate to taking care of yourself as an opportunity to unwind and relax, rather than a chore or another item to check off that never-ending to-do list. • Look for activities that deliver in multiple ways, such as yoga, which helps tone your body while giving your mind a chance to slow down and rejuvenate. • Instead of trying to cram a full body wellness session into a single day, schedule activities that don’t need to be performed daily over the course of a week. Not only does that spread your “you-time” farther, it makes fitting it all in more doable. While a hectic lifestyle can affect the specifics of your health and beauty routine, the tips below are a great way for nearly everyone to get started.
Exfoliate Scrubbing away spent skin cells and the dust and grime of daily life from your face and body allows fresh, healthy cells to grow in their place. After exfoliating, make sure to follow up with a quality moisturizer to smooth and replenish the moisture in your skin.

Simple Tips to
REPLENISH YOUR BODY 36
Vicinity Magazine
November 2014
Rejuvenate Using a hair mask gives your hair a smooth and glossy appearance, making it feel strong. Similarly, regularly applying facial masks also gives the skin a healthy glow and smoother complexion.
Protect In between visits to the dental hygienist, you can continue to polish and strengthen your enamel at home. One option is Colgate Enamel Health Toothpaste, which helps replenish the natural calcium in your teeth and gently polishes for stronger, healthy enamel.
Meditate Make time for meditation. Take time out of your busy day to sit quietly and mediate. Centering the mind can help relieve stress, improving your overall mental well-being. Ultimately, setting aside a little time each day to focus on yourself can result in a happier, healthier and more beautiful you. —Family Features Photo courtesy of Getty Images

DIAMOND MINDS By Barry Farber
The Art of Strategic Thinking, Planning & Action The Art of War is a book that was compiled over 2,000 years
ago by a man named Sun Tzu, a mysterious Chinese warrior and philosopher. Asian soldiers and warlords have studied the book for centuries. In recent times, however, The Art of War has also been studied by many of the world’s most successful business leaders and entrepreneurs. This book’s basic tenet is: “To win without fighting is best.” Sun Tzu believed that you could accomplish the most by doing the least. In other words, plan carefully and take care of all the details, so that in the end there is very little left to do. This was Sun Tzu’s advice: “Plan for what is difficult while it is easy, do what is great while it is small. The most difficult things... must be done while they are still easy, the greatest things... while they are still small. For this reason, sages never do what is great, and this is why they achieve greatness.”
far-reaching, then what you gain Barry Farber by your calculations is much, so you can win before you even fight. When your strategic thinking is shallow and nearsighted, then what you gain... is little, so you lose before you do battle.... Therefore it is said that victorious warriors win first and then go to war, while defeated warriors go to war first and then seek to win.” Of course, the very next chapter is called “Doing Battle.” You can’t just stay in your room strategizing and planning and expect to accomplish anything. At some point, you must take action. Tom Peters, best-selling author of In Search of Excellence, told me that one of his favorite quotes was from General George Patton, who said, “A good plan executed right now is highly preferable to a great plan executed next week.”
The first chapter of The Art of War is devoted to the importance of strategy. A dictionary defines strategy as “a plan, method, or series of maneuvers… for obtaining a specific goal or result.” We all know that not every battle is won by the strongest. A small army with a better strategy can often outmaneuver a larger, better equipped, and even more high-tech army.
“I’m all for planning and and learning and skill development,” says Peters. “On the other side… when opportunity knocks, go through the door at a hundred miles an hour. The fact that you haven’t dotted all the i’s and crossed all the t’s is irrelevant. I think that is what has messed up a lot of American corporations. They got so enamored with their strategic plans, they forgot how to act.”
Thus, having a clear purpose, setting strong goals, and applying strategic thinking may help you defeat even the strongest enemy or overcome the worst adversity.
The real lesson is that there is never one way; we need to be flexible. The great oak with strength of root will break if it does not bend. All learning must be accompanied by action.
The Art of War quotes Zhang Yu, a biographer of military leaders from the Sung Dynasty (960-1278): “When your strategy is deep and
We learn from our actions and act from our learning. One without the other suffers, while together they provide clarity and truth.
