ome Again Design will be hosting a ‘Designer Series’ event in which they will unveil a new program created to educate and empower attendees titled Project Purchase Quality. The event will highlight certain furniture pieces from their inventory that are examples of superior craftsmanship. Furniture is selected based on a 5-point checklist and will bear a label of distinction. The program is intended to provide customers with the knowledge to recognize elements of finely crafted furniture so that they can make informed decisions when it comes to purchasing. This knowledge will be helpful to customers regardless of where they shop. The ‘Designer Series’ event is scheduled for Wednesday, November 4th from 7-9pm. Kent Place School Honors International Day of the Girl

nternational Day of the Girl came into existence on December 19, 2011 when the United Nations General Assembly adopted Resolution 66/170 to recognize girls’ rights and the unique challenges girls face around the world. The resolution also declared October 11 as “International Day of the Girl Child.” The 2015 International Day of the Girl theme is "The Power of the Adolescent Girl: Vision for 2030" which set a range of international targets, including gender equality to be achieved by 2030. In the Primary School, students celebrated the day by having a special assembly and by participating in the #62milliongirls campaign, launched by First Lady Michelle Obama. The girls created their own paper "tweets" with their teachers that described what school has taught them and how #62milliongirls won’t have the opportunities they have had. For example, one student wrote “In school I learned how to read and write. #62milliongirls won’t have that chance.” “We believe the women of BlinkNow truly live by this year's theme, ‘The Power of the Adolescent Girl,’ and we are so inspired by how they are making the world a better place.”stated senior Maggie Lohuis. Co-presidents of the Kent Place Upper School organization, GLAM’D (Girls Learning and Making a Difference), Maggie Lohuis and Sima Parekh also organized a special assembly for International Day of the Girl. They invited speakers Ruth Dekker, director of operations, and Sara McDonough, development assistant, from the organization BlinkNow. The BlinkNow Foundation “provides an education and a loving, caring home for orphaned, impoverished and at-risk children. They also provide community outreach to reduce poverty, empower women, improve health and encourage sustainability and social justice.

Digital Preservation Event at Millburn Public Library

he Millburn Free Public Library will be holding a digital preservation event, sponsored by the Millburn-Short Hills Historical Society, on Sunday, November 15. The purpose of the event is to educate residents and visitors about how to preserve personal collections of prints, photographs, slides and audiovisual material, including VHS videos, 8mm and 16mm movies. The historical society provides digital preservation services to attendees through their partnership with Digital Memory Media, a leading provider of digital imaging services. At the event, Digital Memory Media advisors will be available to advise participants on the best way to digitally preserve their collections. Digitally preserving precious family memories will end worries about aging, humidity and accidental damage that can ruin the materials that hold them. Materials can be brought to the library the day of the session, and patrons will be notified when they can retrieve their scanned and digitized belongings at the historical society museum at the Short Hills Train Station. A small percentage of all proceeds will be credited to the historical society's preservation efforts. The event will take place from 2:00pm to 4:00pm. Santa Claus Shop’s 48th Year

he Santa Claus Shop will open its doors to area families, providing its 48th consecutive year of complimentary holiday shopping. The shop serves more than 500 low income families and senior citizens from Summit, New Providence and Berkeley Heights who are referred by local social services agents. The Santa Claus Shop guests personally select a household item, new clothing for each member of their immediate family, a hat and mittens, a book, and new toy for each child. Local volunteers are responsible for the shop set up, personal shopping services for each guest, gift wrapping and clean up. This year’s Santa Claus Shop will be held at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 587 Springfield Avenue in Summit. The Santa Claus Shop will be hosting a holiday gathering for senior citizens Tuesday, December 1. Families will be offered shopping hours by invitation only on Wednesday, December 2. Local Toy Store to Celebrate National Neighborhood Toy Store Day

n Saturday, November 14th, The Toy Professor, Summit's neighborhood toy store, will join hundreds of toy stores across the country to celebrate the 6th annual National Neighborhood Toy Store Day. Neighborhood Toy Store Day is a chance to stand up and recognize what makes a neighborhood toy store both special and important to our community and in our lives. Not only do they provide expert advice and high quality toys, they also develop relationships and grow with their customers and their families. In honor of this day, The Toy Professor will donate 10% of all standard sales on Saturday, November 14th to the Santa Claus Shop. In addition, The Toy Professor will also make a donation of 10% from shoppers total purchases from Sunday, November 15 through Friday, November 20. COLLEGE DEGREES …Without giving up their family, job, or going broke By Kimberly Blaker

o you’d like to further your education, but with a job and a family, you don’t know where you’d find time for the commute and classes let alone to study? Even if you could, there are the ever-increasing costs for classes and books to squeeze into your budget. Fortunately today there are many ways to overcome these obstacles.

To get started, read What Color is Your Parachute by Richard Nelson Bolles or Who Do You Think You Are? by Keith Harary and Eileen Donahue or check with a local institution for the Myer-Briggs Type Indicator test to discover your interests and strengths. Next, list your educational goals and discuss the importance of them with your partner to gain his support. Finally, research institutions to learn which offer the courses, degree, and options for earning credit that suit your needs. Most can be found on the web, or in a resource center at a college nearby.

CORRESPONDENCE & ONLINE COURSES Independent study programs offer a couple options. Online courses can be taken in the convenience of your home. These usually require attendance (at your computer) at specific times. Correspondence courses are a good option for many because there are no schedules and usually allow six to eighteen months for completion with extensions up to one year. Evening and weekend courses as well as accelerated programs also offer some flexibility.

HOW TO PAY FOR TUITION & BOOKS There are many options for financing your education. The Federal Pell Grant is awarded based on financial need. The maximum award amount for the 2015-2016 school year will be $5,775. Another grant based on financial need is The Federal Supplemental Education Opportunity Grant (FSEOG).

COORDINATING MULTIPLE RESPONSIBILITIES Like most women, you probably wear many hats. But with a little planning and finesse you can develop workable solutions to allow time for your studies.

The Federal Work Study program is awarded based on financial need giving students the opportunity to work on campus to help cover education costs.

• Make a list of ALL your responsibilities then cross off anything unnecessary. Where can you save time? Do housecleaning every ten to fourteen days rather than weekly. Skip cleaning anything that isn’t in dire need until the next time. Straighten up main rooms only on a daily basis. Others can wait.

The Federal Perkins Loan, Federal Subsidized Stafford Loan, and Federal Unsubsidized Stafford Loan are all available with different eligibility requirements, interest rates, and payment terms.

• Make a pact to limit volunteering your time until you’ve reached your educational goals. If ‘no’ isn’t in your vocabulary, create reminder cards to keep by the phone and in your purse so you’ll be prepared to say ‘no’ at all times.

If you are a single mother, you may qualify for grants and scholarships available to single parents. Ask your academic institution what it offers.

• Assign your children some additional chores.

A wide variety of scholarships is available. Check with your institution as well as a scholarship guide or online scholarship search. Ask your employer if it offers reimbursement for college courses. If the classes pertain to your job, your employer may cover the costs. Finally, don’t forget the HOPE Scholarship, a tax credit available for eligible taxpayers, totaling $1,500, and the Lifetime Learning tax credit. Certain requirements and restrictions apply.

• Discuss the importance of furthering your education with your partner. Ask which responsibilities he would be willing to take over until you’ve accomplished your goals. • Trade babysitting with a friend, neighbor, or relative to for some quiet study time. • Set a schedule with your partner for watching the kids so you can study at the library. • Ask your employer if you can take shorter lunch breaks and leave earlier or to allow you fewer but longer workdays for an extra day of study each week.

Surprising Superfoods for Baby Boomers

n estimated 77 million baby boomers represent the largest generation of Americans born in U.S. history. Many are embracing their golden years and taking a proactive approach to their wellbeing. If you are a boomer, you understand nutrition is fundamental to maintaining your health. But do you know some foods are particularly powerful in helping you age well? “Certain foods provide nutrients that are extremely beneficial for baby boomers,” says Kristen Johnson, registered dietician, nutrition expert at On Target Living, and author of the newly released cookbook Target To Table: Healthy and Delicious Meals One Superfood at a Time. “Eating these superfoods regularly is one of the easiest yet most impactful things boomers can do for their health.” Johnson’s top five superfoods for baby boomers include:

➊ FRESH COLD WATER FISH “On top of being a delicious lean protein, fish is loaded with omegas-3s that keep our brains healthy as we age,” says Johnson. “EPA and DHA are the type of omega-3 fat found in fish and are especially important for a healthy heart, hormonal balance, energy and mood.” Since most of us don’t have access to fresh, wild-caught or coldwater fish on a daily basis, she suggests taking a high-quality cod liver oil daily, like Nordic Naturals Orange-Flavored Cod Liver Oil. “There’s no fishy smell and a quality you can taste,” says Johnson. “Also, cod liver oil naturally contains vitamin D, which is needed to absorb calcium.”

➋ SUPER SEEDS Certain seeds, like flax, chia and hemp seeds, have extensive health benefits and more boomers are incorporating them into their daily meals and snacks. “Flaxseeds and chia seeds are high in omega-3s and fiber and contain antiviral, antifungal and antibacterial properties,” says Johnson. “Hemp seeds are high in healthy omega-6s, along with being high in protein. These super seeds help balance hormones and can also help with digestion.” Easy ways to start incorporating seeds into your daily routine is to add them to smoothies or sprinkle on yogurt or oatmeal.

➌ SUPER VEGETABLES “Vegetables provide many nutrients, including potassium, fiber, folate, vitamins A, E, C and are alkalizing, meaning they neutralize acids in the body and help your body thrive and stay mineralized,” says Johnson. Try to get a variety of super vegetables into your daily diet including leafy greens, bok choy, broccoli, mushrooms, beets, celery, carrots, onions and garlic. Leafy greens and broccoli are especially high in calcium and vitamin C needed to keep your immune system healthy and prevent sickness. Beets and celery are extremely detoxifying. Garlic is part of the onion family and contributes to a healthy immune system while helping to lower inflammation. 38

Healing Musculoskeletal Injuries with Non-Surgical Treatments

eople living with chronic pain, due to musculoskeletal conditions or sports injuries, are often nervous about surgery to provide relief and healing. An approach that does not require surgery or recovery time is a welcomed alternative. Luckily, the doctors at New Jersey Sports Medicine (NJSM) and New Jersey Regenerative Institute (NJRI) in Cedar Knolls are performing the latest in non-surgical treatments. NJSM was founded in April of 2009 by Gerard Malanga, MD, Jay Bowen, DO and Thomas Agesen, MD, all former physicians at the Kessler Institute in West Orange. Driven by a need to provide choices beyond traditional treatments and results, they “formed a partnership with a common goal to seek out the best treatment options available for patients, non-surgically,” Dr. Agesen explains.

doctors treat a wide range of conditions arising from other causes. The patient demographic is varied. “Any decline in function of the joints, muscles, tendons and ligaments” are treated, Dr. Agesen says. “This includes shoulders, hips, knees, elbows, ankles, wrists and spine. We have treated high school, college and professional athletes as well as non-athletes.” In keeping with their non-surgical approach to medicine, alternative therapies include Regenexx stem cell therapies, prolotherapy, ozone and prolozone treatments, platelet lysate epidurals, tenex and manos procedures and UBI treatments. Opened as an affiliate of NJSM in 2012, NJRI is where stem cell and blood platelet therapies are administered.

In addition to the three founding doctors, Kevin Dunn, MD is also on staff at NJSM and NJRI. The full staff includes a fellow, resident medical doctors, medical students, medical assistants, a lab team and an administrative staff.

“We started doing the stem cell procedures in 2012 using the Regenexx protocol and with end injection products developed a Biologics Lab on premise,” Dr. Agesen says. “The Biologics Lab has enabled the doctors to provide the most advanced treatment, tailored to each patient, for their specific needs. With this lab and advanced treatments, NJRI originated. NJSM patients are those that have any decline in function of the joints, muscles, tendons and ligaments. When stem cells and platelet rich plasma (PRP) are needed, that’s when NJRI takes over.”

who do not fully understand what is involved; however, Dr. Agesen maintains that this type of treatment may be the best nonsurgical option for advanced degenerative conditions. “We feel that Biologics (stem cell and cellular therapies such as PRP) have the greatest advantage for treating patients non-surgically,” he says. “Our stem cell procedures utilize the patient’s own stem cells along with platelet growth factors to help heal damaged tissues, tendons, ligaments, cartilage and bone. All of these procedures are done in our office, using local anesthesia and ultrasound and/or fluoroscopic guidance.” With the two offices and plans for the expansion of Biologics Lab, Dr. Agesen is confident that NJSM and NJRI will continue to provide quality care. “Our focus is to restore optimal function and to get the patient back into the game whether it is a specific activity or just living life to the fullest.”

Recently I sat down with John and asked him for his insight. Here are John’s top 3 pointers on living a healthier life: 1. Hydration. The first thing that people need to understand is that the body needs water. The body needs to stay hydrated with at least six to eight 8-ounce glasses of fluid a day. If 50% of your fluid intake is water, then it’s a homerun. Nutritionists will recommend six 8-ounce glasses of water. Staying hydrated makes the kidneys and blood cleaner. The oxygen uptake in the body also improves.

2. A healthy heart. The most important muscle in the body is the heart. We need to be doing aerobic activity for 30 to 40 minutes a day, 6 to 7 days a week. These exercises could be a stroll with your wife or husband, a jog, a swim, a game of tennis, or a bike ride. Every day, 6 to 7 days a week, your body should do something aerobically. Do you realize what the decrease in cardiac incidents would be or how much cholesterol we would decrease if people truly did something aerobic each and every day? 3. Strength and flexibility. You don’t need to be a bodybuilder in order to do simple exercises. You can do band exercises, use weight machines or use free weights. Do what you enjoy. Push-ups, pull-ups and sit-ups are fantastic. Also, it is always important to warm up before you stretch. You can’t stretch a cold rubber band. I always tell people you should be perspiring before you stretch. A lot less time would be spent in the doctor’s office if people could stick to these three points. People would also save a lot of money.
