Loss of 600-Year-Old White Oak Tree in Basking Ridge By, Christine Layng
T
he oldest white oak tree in the United States calls Basking Ridge, NJ its home. Sadly, at over 600 years old, it’s dying. The town grew around the tree and its neighbor, the Basking Ridge Presbyterian Church, built in 1717. The tree was there before Columbus sailed to America and has become a landmark, which some call the Holy Oak. Standing almost 100 feet high, with branches spread out over 130 feet wide, it has been struck by lightning, survived hurricanes and sustained droughts. It was two years ago when people noticed that the top branches had less green on them. Experts were consulted to stop the decline, to no avail, and with a drought this summer, followed by a deluge of rain, they had to declare that the tree is dying. Most white oaks live 200 to 300 years, but the Holy Oak has more than surpassed that. Even so, the residents of Basking Ridge must say goodbye and face the loss their beloved tree. It will come down in early 2017, marking the 300th anniversary of the church on whose property it sits.

Anderson, w!se Executive Vice President. “This is no small feat,” he said, adding that he is proud of Ms. Kathleen Brennan, MSMA Mathematics Chairperson, who helped the students become “Certified Financially Literate™” through her popular “Financial Math” course at the Mount.

Do it! Exhibition “do it” is an exhibition unlike any other the Museum has hosted. Rather than an exhibition of objects created by artists, “do it” is a collection of conceptual instructions provided by renowned artists. The project originated in Paris in 1993 and has since traveled internationally through Independent Curators International, becoming the longest-running, most far-reaching show ever to take place. Runs thru Dec. 31. Montclair Art Museum, 3 South Mountain Ave., Montclair. 973-746-5555. www.montclairartmuseum.org

Model Trains & Railroads Exhibition
Set against the backdrop of one of the oldest metropolises in the nation, Marylou and Jerome Bongiorno’s acclaimed city symphony film in 3D captures the vibrancy of what’s endured in Newark, encompassing a cinematic arc from sunrise to sunset. Featuring poetry and music from Newark-based artists and musicians. Runs thru Dec. 31. Newark Museum, 49 Washington St., Newark. 973-5966550. www.newarkmuseum.org
The trains move through a world of imagination as they travel through a town with shops, cars, and people busy with activity. Bright ‘neon’ (L.E.D.) billboards and shop signs lend a contemporary touch to the landscape. Hands-on activities allow children to explore the sights and sounds of train travel and safety, or to imagine themselves as the engineer, tugging on a whistle. Young visitors will enjoy playing with wooden tracks and train cars, or looking at the train story books in the gallery. Keeping Kids Active in Cooler Temperatures
A
Join a class or indoor sports team. Whether you are playing a favorite
s the weather gets colder, it can be harder to motivate kids to step away from their computers and devices and get off the couch. However, it’s essential for kids to participate in active play all year round. According to research from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, regular physical activity helps build and maintain healthy bones and muscles, promotes psychological well-being and reduces feelings of depression and anxiety. Sadly, physical activity is becoming less of a priority in kids’ daily routines. A recent survey conducted by Let’s Play, an initiative from Dr Pepper Snapple Group to make active play a daily priority, found that 64 percent of parents said busy schedules stand in the way of more active play for their children, up from 56 percent in 2015. Each season brings its own opportunities for play, and fall is no exception. Families can beat the cold weather blues and stay active together by trying some of the following activities:
Plan a nature walk to find inspiration and materials for art. Even though it’s chilly outside, your family can still get out and enjoy the outdoors. Bundle up and take a nature hike with your kids around the neighborhood or at a local,
national or state park. Encourage your kids to collect items like pinecones, acorns and leaves as you go and to be on the lookout for wildlife to observe. After the hike, take out art and craft supplies and help them create projects with the items they found.
Plan an indoor scavenger hunt. When a really cold day comes along, send your kids on a fun and active scavenger hunt around the house, searching for items that you can hide in advance. Work together as a family to locate the items or create some friendly family competition to see who can find all the items first. Having the family move around the house with a mission prevents the temptation of staying on the couch in front of the television all day.
sport or learning a new one, it is always more fun with other people. Longer stretches of active play are often more likely to occur with friends or siblings. Sign your children up for an indoor sport or class they have never tried before, such as gymnastics, rock climbing, swimming or dance. This allows your children to learn something new, meet kids their age and be active for an extended period of time.
Volunteer. While giving back is always in season, this time of year is a perfect opportunity to teach kids about giving back to those in need and being grateful for what they have. Sign the whole family up to volunteer at a local soup kitchen, participate in a toy drive for a children’s hospital or help out at an animal rescue shelter. Your children will not only be active, but will also grow emotionally, socially and intellectually as a result.

Simple Steps to Protect Your Family from Fire, Carbon Monoxide and Other Threats
W
hile life can be complicated, sometimes the simple solutions are the best ones, particularly when it comes to protecting your family from household hazards. The “Change Your Clock, Change Your Batteries” program espouses that philosophy. For the 29th consecutive year, the campaign led by the Energizer brand and the International Association of Fire Chiefs, has reminded families of the life-saving habit of changing and testing the batteries in smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors when most of the country sets their clocks back at the end of daylight saving time. This year, that is November 6. A whopping 50 percent of home smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors have non-working batteries, according to the National Fire Protection Association.
“A home that contains smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors is only safer if these devices actually work,” says Michelle Atkinson, chief consumer officer, Energizer. “Testing your devices and updating their batteries are simple and critical steps to keeping your family comfortable and secure.” “Smart connected home technologies are keeping families safer, when operational,” says Atkinson. “Remember, these tools, along with flashlights and other home safety devices require reliable battery power as well.” A critical yet simple safety practice is to keep flashlights with fresh batteries at your bedside for help in finding your way out of your house and signaling for help in the event of a fire or other emergency. Also, keep a stash of high-quality 9V, C,
D and AA batteries to power vital safety devices whenever necessary. For long-term protection, opt for batteries designed to prevent damaging leaks. More safety tips and resources can be found at energizer.com/homesafety. —StatePoint photo source: (c) tab62-Fotolia.com

Diamond MINDS
Get Over It!
Don’t let resentments drag you down. In the end, it’s all up to you.
O
ne of my favorite bands, The Eagles, wrote a song poking fun at people who constantly whine that they are “victims of this, victims of that,” yet never take responsibility for their lives. The Eagles advice? “Get over it!” How many people are living with grudges, anger and resentment from the past? It can eat at your insides and do more damage than you think. What’s done is done. And surprisingly, you can gain much from past difficulties—depending on how you look at it. For example, a study of two sons of an alcoholic father found that one grew up to become a successful businessman, while his brother was living on the streets, a hopeless drunk. Both sons were asked: “Why did you end up this way?” And each had the same answer: “What would you expect with a father like mine?” It’s all about choices. We can let all the past experiences and people who have “hurt” us make us bitter or better. If we choose to let anger and resentment seethe, they can become like poisons destroying us—and
even end up killing us with unnecessary stress. A USA Today study found that more than 80% of doctors’ visits are for illnesses related to stress. Now, I was about to write some tips on how to get over disappointments and live a more stress-free lifestyle when I thought I’d reverse the process and look at it from a whole new angle. Here are several tips on how to be miserable. Yes, miserable. You may even know a few people like this—and they wouldn’t trade their misery for all the riches in the world. Tip #1: Believe the world is against you. Cut yourself off from the world and then somehow, an inner voice tells you that everyone’s out to get you. You have to keep a negative attitude toward everyone— because for some odd reason, people’s reaction will mirror your approach.
Barry Farber
(and we do have a name for anything you can think up) that defines why people should feel sorry for you. Tell everyone your “diagnosis” to rationalize your misery. This should work well for a while, and when it gets stale, you can search for something else to evoke sympathy. Tip #4: Blame everyone else for your problems. Never look inside for a solution. Your troubles are always because someone else got lucky and you ended up suffering because of it. Tip #5: And finally, hold these words close to your heart at all times: anger, jealousy, self-pity, selfishness, self-absorption and revenge. You get the point. Attitude determines your altitude in most situations—some look up and some look down. We have the final choice. If it’s going to be, it’s up to me.
Tip #2: Get all wrapped up in yourself. It’s not time to think of people’s needs; after all, you should always come first.
The writer Maya Angelou phrased it beautifully: “If you don’t like something, change it. If you can’t change it, change your attitude. Don’t complain.”
Tip #3: Find an illness in a medical book
Or, as the Eagles put it, “Get over it.”

BOON THAI KITCHEN Thai Food Takes Livingston By Rhonda L. Rivera, Photos by Dan Epstein
Ruenboon Sarabhaya
L
ast December, Livingston became the proud home to the sister restaurant of Montclair’s Spice II: Boon Thai Kitchen. Named for the generational given name of the owner—Boon is the first name of the owner, her father and grandfather— the restaurant offers fresh and flavorful fare in a comfortable setting. When deciding on appetizers, make sure to choose the Veggie Dumplings ($9). These colorful packets are filled with shredded cabbage, carrots, scallion and taro, wrapped in a vegetable wrapper and topped with a tiny piece of fried onion. Light yet flavorsome, the homemade bundles are the perfect start to the meal. Another delightful first course is the Duck Roll ($11). The roll is filled with a good amount of well-prepared duck, mango, apple, red onion and lettuce. Unlike other places, the duck is not greasy at all and the sweet mango lightens up the dish with a deft hand. 34
Vicinity Magazine
For dinner, an excellent option is the Tilapia in Mango Salad ($19). The dish has a fruity sweetness, thanks in part to the mango and special sauce. Accompanied by a very tasty salad, which is available for $9 as a side, this main course is a star. Alternatively, order the Duck in Orange Sauce ($22) for another delicious entrée. Like the Duck Roll, the protein is neither gamey nor greasy. The sauce provides a delightful sweetness that does not overpower, but rather allows the roasted duck to take center stage.
to accommodate off-menu requests and surpass its client’s expectations. The most difficult aspect of this restaurant— aside from selecting among Thai favorites— is actually locating it. Set back from Northfield Road by a good thirty feet, Boon Thai Kitchen is preceded by Infinity clothing store and its parking lot, as well as the eatery’s own parking lot. For a landmark, look for the Shell gas station across the street. The slight inconvenience of actually spotting Boon Thai Kitchen definitely is worth the challenge.
To end the meal, opt for the Thai Coconut Jelly ($7), which is attractively served in small mason jars. Reminiscent of a macaroon, the jelly’s gorgeous presentation elevates the dessert to the next level.
