Central Avenue School Shows Kindness and Gratitude
T
his fall, Central Avenue School (CAS) of Madison became the first in New Jersey to participate in the National Kindness Campaign. Their two-week long “Gratitude Campaign” included various initiatives that reminded kids to show gratitude and kindness. “Gratitude Spots” were marked throughout the school to remind students to stop and think about what they are grateful for; while “Gratitude Walls” allowed them to fill the hallways with sticky notes that shared sentiments of gratitude, kindness and inspirations. Children were encouraged to spread kindness amongst each other. Handpicked 5th Grade Ambassadors handed out “Kindness Cards” saying “You Matter”– children would tell other students why they matter and the recipient would then pass the card along. The school’s “Gratitude Campaign” was part of a larger initiative called The Look For The Good Project, which is a national program that emphasizes kindness, compassion, and acceptance among elementary school children, aiming to reduce bullying. Participating in the program supported Central Avenue School’s ongoing commitment to teaching students about the importance of respect and its anti-bullying efforts.

Township Becomes “Stigma-Free”
I
n an effort to remove the stigma associated with mental illness and substance abuse disorders, Chatham Township has declared itself to be a “Stigma-Free” town. At a recent meeting of the Chatham Township Committee, they became the 26th Morris County community to pass this resolution. Noted Karen Swartz, Chatham Township Deputy Mayor, “There is no substitute for communication, understanding, and education when it comes to coping with mental illness and substance abuse.” Through this “Stigma-Free” initiative, they recognize the prevalence of mental illness and substance use disorders in the community, and promote re-education and understanding that can help lead to treatment and recovery– minus the stigma associated with these illnesses. Stigma-Free communities aim to open dialogues about stigma, raise awareness, and create a culture where residents feel supported. Morris County has created a Stigma-Free website, www. morriscountystigmafree.org, to call attention to the initiative and provide information and resources.
W
ith one photograph, you are transported to a distinct moment that is forever frozen in time. You instantly remember how it felt when your child would slowly fall asleep in your arms. You remember the sound of giggles and little feet pattering down the hallway. The seemingly mundane moments from years gone suddenly have new meaning. Portraits have the unique power to connect us to who we were, who we are and who we hope to become. They lead us to a connected life filled with purpose, discovery and joy.
These are the moments we live for. These are the moments we celebrate. Whether it’s an imminent birth, a pending retirement, or any day in between, every day there’s something to celebrate.

Chatham Resident Debuts Children’s Book
VOTED BEST OF ESSEX—BEST SPECIALTY STORE

461 ROUTE 46, FAIRFIELD • 973-227-2245
ifelong Chatham resident Penelope Lagos recently debuted the release of her children’s book, I Miss My Best Friend, to help children deal with pet loss. Lagos’ new book tells the story of Louie, Penny, and their adorable dog Cassius. As dealing with the loss of a pet is usually a child’s first experience with death, I Miss My Best Friend is a helpful resource for parents and their children. The children’s book was inspired by Lagos’ own experience of losing a pet. Says Lagos, “I began putting my feelings and memories about him on paper and eventually those words formed into what is now I Miss My Best Friend.” Along with helping children deal with loss, Lagos wanted to fulfill her motto, “Be a Voice for the Voiceless.” She teamed up with St. Hubert’s Animal Welfare Center in Madison, a non-profit that helps all types of animals. With every sale of her book, 10% goes back to the center to help with their programs, which includes a pet loss support group. I Miss My Best Friend is available for purchase at local bookstores, including Jabberwocky and Sterling Hallmark Shop in Chatham, as well as online with Amazon and Barnes & Noble. Back Home Safely Helps You Live at Home Despite Obstacles By Jackie Sawyer
Y
our home is your castle and no one wants to give theirs up when faced with injury– or age-related physical challenges or illnesses that make it difficult to remain living at home. Back Home Safely is a home safety modification company run by husband and wife therapist team Gregg and Karen Frank. The company strives to keep and/or bring people home so they are safe, independent and happy. The company’s services include stair-lifts, wheelchair ramps, bathroom modifications, grab bars, door-widening, stair-rails, vertical platform lifts, and more. The Franks offer free in-home assessments and tailored plans for optimal solutions with work performed by an experienced team of staff carpenters and technicians. Ramps and straight stair-lifts, which can offer temporary solutions, are also available to rent.
Unlike other companies offering these services, the Franks have degrees in physical and occupational therapy and use their medical knowledge to help people make the best possible decisions.
Notes from happy customers pepper the website, lauding the company for extraordinary service, responsiveness, compassion, cooperation, personal attention, workmanship, creative solutions and a “rare combination of knowledge and adaptive equipment.” “It’s wonderful to be able to help someone who is nervous to leave a medical facility and face obstacles at home by showing them how quickly their home can be modified for safety and accessibility,” said Karen. Back Home Safely recently moved its headquarters to Randolph, where there is a showroom for clients to experience the types of modifications the company recommends.

EASY WAYS TO BOOST YOUR SELF-
CONFIDENCE
F
eeling good about yourself these days? If so, you’re ahead of the game, since a recent study shows your perception of your own image has a profound effect on how you present yourself to the rest of the world. Those findings could be empowering in light of the fact that even small changes to your self-care routine can significantly boost your self-confidence. The study by researchers at the Stanford Graduate School of Business found those who believe in their own attractiveness view themselves as having higher social status. “The finding that your assessment of yourself shapes your view of yourself and others puts power into your hands,” the authors note.
3
Let your body language communicate self-respect. Keeping your shoulders pulled back and your body straight and tall communicates confidence to your brain, one study confirms. Other research found the most empowering stance is one in which your arms are held slightly away from your torso, your body is open and your head is up.
4
Optimize color in your clothing. The right shade may light up your entire face and have a surprising impact on your mood. “Choosing the color of your office, your clothes or your desktop should not be taken lightly colors do affect our moods and productivity,” states a recent article on Scienceofpeople.com. “When given the choice, picking a color that will work with you and not against you can only help.”
5
Wear scent strategically. Because our brains link certain smells to positive experiences, research suggests we may be able to ramp up our confidence with scents that remind us of happy times. That’s why aromatherapy can help alleviate anxiety, depression and sleeplessness, and improve quality of life for those with chronic health issues, confirms Mayo Clinic.
Want to give yourself some instant confidence? Consider how these science-based suggestions may help you put your best foot forward when dealing with everything life throws your way.
1
Get moving. Regardless of your fitness goals (or lack thereof), the fact is you’re likely to feel better physically, emotionally and mentally after you exercise. Research also shows it can improve your self-esteem.
2
Ramp up your smile. Scientists say our brains are zapped with an instant mood boost when we smile, and that boost is reinforced when others smile back. Further, whiter teeth can have a direct effect on our social and professional interactions, and they’re now easy to achieve through consumer brands like Rembrandt’s 1 Week Whitening Kit that can achieve professional-level results at home within a week. In study results transcending gender, age, income, education, employment and marital status, 58 percent of participants were more likely to be hired after whitening their teeth, while 53 percent received higher salary offers. Sixty-one percent were deemed more confident, and 54 percent generated more interest from others in terms of further interactions or dating.
Bottom line: When you’re taking care of yourself and projecting your best self, you’re far more likely to project the confidence you need to deal effectively with life. “Confidence can make or break a lot of things,” advises Lecia Bushak on Medicaldaily.com. “In our extrovert-centric society, confidence can get you a job, a girlfriend, and the courage to say no to people or situations that are toxic to you. Confidence is knowing yourself and taking care of yourself, too.” — (BPT) Winter 2017

Healthy hydration. Proper hydration affects numerous body functions, such as ensuring your muscles and joints are well lubricated and helping your body to regulate its temperature. Water is the solution most experts recommend, but non-sugary options like tea can also help.
2
Food factors. During the winter it’s especially important to be sure you’re consuming enough healthy fats and omega-3s to promote moisture from the inside out. Good sources include eggs, nuts, avocados and lean proteins like fish, turkey, chicken and beef.
3
Clothing concerns. Be sure to cover up adequately when outdoors to prevent the chapping and irritation that can come from sustained exposure. Also be wary of precipitation; be sure your outer layers repel water and that you’re able to change into dry clothing promptly if you do get wet.
4
Ample exercise. Getting your heart rate up helps get your blood circulating, which is not only good for burning calories and beefing up your muscles, it also promotes healthy skin. Sweating helps push impurities out of your pores, and the increased circulation helps distribute nutrients throughout your body, including the skin.
5
Avoid irritants. Take care to avoid potential problems by sticking to softly textured fabrics that won’t get itchy, take it easy on the exfoliating and be mindful of skin care products, soaps and detergents that may be particularly drying to already parched skin. Also skip the temptation to warm up in a hot shower, which can dry your skin even further.

Manage moisture. Oil-free options let you add moisture without over-stimulating oil glands, while natural oils such as coconut or jojoba are ideal for dryer skin. Apply lotion after every shower to trap in moisture and as needed throughout the day to prevent chapping and cracking, and give special attention to areas that are prone to damage, such as your lips and hands. WAYS TO PERFECT A CAREFREE STYLE
A
carefree style may appear effortless, but creating a look that stands up to a busy day still requires some simple work. Keep your skin in top condition and your hair and makeup on point with these tips from the beauty experts at Macy’s.
1
Protect your skin. If there’s only one skin care product you use, it has to be sunscreen. Not only is daily SPF important for avoiding sunburns, it also helps prevent wrinkles and spots caused by sun damage. Apply early and often, and don’t be fooled by a cloudy day. Even when skies are overcast, those UV rays can inflict plenty of harm. If you’ll be out for an extended period, consider a stylish hat to lend extra protection to your scalp, ears and face. Also remember to cover or apply sunscreen to often-overlooked places, such as the tops of your feet.
2
Go for all-day eyes. When you’re embracing a laid-back look, a fully done eye can be overkill. A basic tint and some mascara is a simple way to achieve a puttogether but fuss-free style. Using a waterproof formula can give you the confidence that your lashes are in perfect condition and ready for whatever the day may bring. If you have a favorite formula, check to see whether a waterproof version is available.
3
Make it matte. For lip color that lasts from sunrise to moonlight, matte lipstick is the real deal. In addition to being long-lasting, matte lipsticks pack an intense punch of color perfect for a bright and cheerful lip. If a little sparkle or shine is more your thing, go ahead and add a light layer of clear gloss and give yourself bonus points if one layer or both include SPF.

FOCUS ON NUTRITION 5 Ways to Add More Nutrients to Your Lifestyle
A
nutritious diet is crucial for overall health and well-being. While it’s OK to indulge from time to time, it’s important to make sure you’re providing your body with appropriate nourishment. There are many ways to help you add more of the essential nutrients you need into everyday meals, including these nutritious ideas from CocoaVia.
1
Sneak in More Fruits and Vegetables. You can bulk up the nutritional value of nearly any meal by incorporating fruits or vegetables directly into your recipes. Pureeing veggies is a good way to disguise textures or flavors you might typically avoid. For example, celery is a natural flavor enhancer for many types of broth soup. Adding finely pureed celery to the stock will add the flavor without the crunchy bits. You can also slip vegetables like spinach or carrots into smoothies, and depending on the base and fruit, you may never even taste them. Fresh, canned or frozen, fruit can give a boost of nutrition to dishes like oatmeal or pudding. You can also use purees (think applesauce) as a low-fat substitute for eggs and oil in baked goods like cake.
2
Go Frozen. Fresh fruits and vegetables provide a wealth of essential vitamins and nutrients, but you may be surprised that their frozen counterparts do the same. Frozen foods are often perceived as less nutritious, but they can contain just as many nutrients as fresh produce. In fact, since freezing often involves picking the food at its peak and then quickly freezing it, freezing can actually help retain vitamins more efficiently than refrigeration or canning; frozen vegetables can actually hold on to nutrients longer than fresh produce and are a great alternative when seasonal fruits and vegetables are unavailable. In many cases, frozen veggies also make it easy to experiment with better-for-you meals because the cleaning and prep work is already done. You can try adding them to soups, stir-fries, casseroles and even pasta dishes.

3
Cook Quickly. If you’ve historically shied away from cooked vegetables, you may find that proper preparation is the secret ingredient. Not only does overcooking veggies deplete their flavor, in most cases it also diminishes their nutritional value. Cook veggies lightly and quickly using methods like stir-frying or steaming to help retain water-soluble nutrients like vitamins B and C.
4
Get Saucy. You may think of dishes covered in rich gravy or sauce as unhealthy, and in some cases, you would be right. However, it’s actually quite possible to create saucy dishes that taste terrific. Both tomato sauce and pesto add nutrients and can top pretty much anything, from pastas to grilled chicken. Tomato sauce contains lycopene, a bright plant pigment known as a carotenoid that has been linked to a range of health benefits. Pesto is traditionally made with healthy pine nuts and basil, but you can also get creative and prepare this light sauce alternative with options such as arugula, spinach and heart-healthy walnuts or pecans.
5
Consider Cocoa Flavanols. Another option to consider adding to your diet is cocoa flavanols. These plant-based phytonutrients are found naturally in cocoa, and research supports that these flavanols work within your body to help maintain healthy blood flow. While chocolate, including dark chocolate and natural (non-alkalized) cocoa powder, can be sources of cocoa flavanols, they are often not a reliable source of cocoa flavanols. The way cocoa is handled matters in the retention of these phytonutrients. However, one easy way to add cocoa flavanols to your routine is by incorporating a daily cocoa extract supplement, such as CocoaVia, which contains the highest concentration available in a cocoa extract supplement today. The supplement can be added to the food or beverage of your choice, like a Chocolate-Chai Smoothie or coffee. Visit CocoaVia.com for more information about cocoa flavanols and ideas for adding them to your diet.

Diamond Minds
Embracing Empathy By, Barry Farber

uring a recent television interview with The Amazing Kreskin he opened my mind to a new way to look at connecting and building important relationships. Listening was one of the topics we were taking about but it went much deeper than that. How can you understand someone by putting yourself in their situation and in their shoes. It not only helps to connect to that person but establish a clear and positive path to move forward together whether it’s a personal or business relationship. The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines empathy as:
empathy NOUN | em·pa·thy The action of understanding, being aware of, being sensitive to, and vicariously experiencing the feelings, thoughts, and experience of another of either the past or present without having the feelings, thoughts, and experience fully communicated in an objectively explicit manner
Here are a couple of ideas to remember. 1. The next time you’re having a conversation with someone don’t be afraid of silence. There’s just as much happening when no one is speaking as when they are. 2. Remove the phone from the table during meetings or meals so you don’t have a machine separating you from the connection you’re making with a human. With all the advances in technology the one area we are sacrificing (especially with millennials) is the ability to communicate face to face, one on one. 3. Watch the other persons body language and never forget how important eye contact is. They really are the windows to the soul. Almost 30 years ago before I started my own business one of my good friends and mentors told me to never underestimate the power of looking someone in the eye to understand where they’re coming from and what they’re thinking and feeling. 4. And one of the most effective ways to connect with people can happen when you’re not even around them. Meditate and find somewhere quiet where silence allows you to settle the mind and you will be amazed at how many answers come to you about your relationships and the needs of people in your environment. That’s where many breakthroughs happen.
