F
or generations, families have made visiting the Great Swamp Greenhouses in Gillette a Christmas tradition. Christmas trees, holiday decorations, gift items, houseplants and of course poinsettias mean Great Swamp has all you need to bring Christmas to life!
Future Ready Schools - New Jersey is a coalition of the New Jersey Institute of Technology’s Collaborative for Leadership, Education, and Assessment Research, the New Jersey School Boards Association, and the New Jersey Department of Education. ith one photograph, you are transported to a distinct moment that is forever frozen in time. You instantly remember how it felt when your child would slowly fall asleep in your arms. You remember the sound of giggles and little feet pattering down the hallway. The seemingly mundane moments from years gone suddenly have new meaning. Portraits have the unique power to connect us to who we were, who we are and who we hope to become. They lead us to a connected life filled with purpose, discovery and joy.
These are the moments we live for. These are the moments we celebrate. Whether it’s an imminent birth, a pending retirement, or any day in between, every day there’s something to celebrate.

Will it be a full summer away in the woods, a month traveling, a 4- or a 2- week camp, a broad one or a specialized one focusing on learning a new skill? Many ACA accredited camps will be present. Parents can have in-depth conversations about the programs and facilities, pick up information, watch videos, and find out which camps make a good fit for your child. Different camps will be represented at each fair. This is a free educational resource, guaranteed to give you face to face meetings with a diverse set of camps from various locations all under one roof. For children in PreK-through high school.

BEYOND CRYOTHERAPY Can Help Improve Your Mind and Your Body By Susan Baldani, photos by Dan Epstein
C
ryotherapy is a therapeutic practice that uses low temperatures on the body as a whole or localized to treat certain problem areas.
Beyond Cryotherapy, located in the newly renovated Grover House building in Caldwell, offers multiple services for a long list of conditions. Owner Beth Candela, a Registered Dietitian and avid marathon runner, has used cryotherapy for years and feels that it has done much to improve her performance. She explains that it can help injuries heal faster, reduce pain, bring down inflammation, and increase energy. However, cryotherapy is not just for athletes. Notes Beth, “Cryotherapy can help relieve symptoms associated with autoimmune diseases, increase metabolism for weight loss, build your immune system, improve sleep, and detoxify the body.” Beth also suffers from a chronic illness and uses cryotherapy along with Beyond Cryotherapy’s Infrared Sauna as an alternative to medication. “I want to empower people; it’s your life, squeeze every moment out of it, and these are some ways we can help you do that,” says Beth. Along with whole body cryotherapy, Beyond Cryotherapy offers a wide variety of localized services, such as a Cryoskin. Cryoskin is a non-invasive treatment for slimming, cellulite reduction, and toning that utilizes the science behind cryolipolysis. Cryoskin facials are also provided to help boost collagen production, reduce the appearance of wrinkles and improve skin elasticity. In addition to whole body and local cryotherapy, Beyond Cryotherapy provides Celluma low light therapy, Normatec
Beth Candela compression as well as Hyperice vibration therapy which can be applied to the feet, calves, shoulders, neck, upper and lower back, hamstrings, knees, and other areas of the body to help maximize your health. Beth also ensures that the center has the best equipment and maintains high safety standards. “I want to offer a spa that is not only beautiful, where people feel comfortable and safe, but I also want them to feel like it’s a place where they can heal and relax,” she says.

A Healthy, Winter-Ready Home
W
hen chilly weather arrives and the days get shorter, chances are good you’ll spend the majority of your days indoors. Before you start your hibernation, it’s a good idea to ensure your home is up to the task. Put your well-being at the top of the list with these ideas to help ensure a healthconscious home.
Encourage Better Air Quality When the house is closed up to keep out the cold, you may be trapping in undesirable air pollutants. A well-sealed house may not have the best circulation, and that’s the ideal environment for allergens to accumulate.

A thorough cleaning is the first step toward better air quality. Vacuum all carpets, including under furniture and around baseboards. Be sure to launder linens that aren’t typically part of your regular washing routine. When opening windows isn’t comfortable during cold winter weather, letting the sunshine in can still help to improve indoor air quality. A study by the University of Oregon’s Biology and the Built Environment Center showed rooms with increased sunlight have fewer viable bacteria. “Until now, daylighting design has been primarily about visual comfort or circadian health, but now we can say daylighting influences air quality,” said Kevin Van Den Wymelenberg, codirector of the BioBE Center and co-author of the study.
Keep Out the Cold There actually is some truth to the old wives’ tales associating cold with getting sick. The viruses that cause colds and the flu thrive in cooler temperatures, for example. This means that, at least indirectly, a cold environment may indeed make you sick. To ward off a chill in your home, safeguard against drafts around windows and doors. If seasonal weather-proofing is impractical, consider temporary solutions like draft stoppers or mats you can place at the base of doors. Add insulation, if needed, in areas that commonly release a significant amount of heat, such as the attic and garage.
Let in the Light Natural light plays an important role in overall health, and reduced daylight in the winter months can have a big impact on productivity and sleep, according to a recent survey conducted by YouGov on behalf of Velux. For example, nearly two-thirds of respondents said they believe daylight affects their productivity and mood. Light is also an important cue to the body’s circadian clock, and proper exposure to natural light during the day can help support better sleep when darkness falls. What’s more, sunlight is a natural antidepressant, and there is ample scientific evidence that associates daylight with better health and quality of life, such as improved mood, less fatigue and reduced eyestrain. It may be tempting to keep the drapes closed when it’s blustery outside to ward off a draft, but with well-sealed windows, there’s no reason to block that all-important natural light. In rooms with ample natural light available, take advantage, especially in the morning when exposure to daylight can benefit your circadian rhythm. However, not every room is situated to maximize your access to natural light, and that’s when you can get creative. One solution is skylights, which add natural light to virtually any space. An option like a Sun Tunnel Skylight offered by Velux Skylights lends brightness to even the smallest spaces, like a bathroom or hallway. For a larger room, a freshair skylight can help address air quality concerns, and some models offer smartphone connectivity to open and close the skylight and even raise or lower blinds with a few quick taps of the finger. Learn more at whyskylights.com. —Family Features
Daylight Makes a Difference As the days become shorter and colder, the importance of getting enough daylight is even more acute to sleep patterns, mood and productivity. These tips can help you get a better night sleep: • Increase your exposure to natural light during the day. Take a lunchtime walk at work or, if you can’t get outside, sit by a window while you eat. • Install blackout curtains in your bedroom to block light from street lamps and the moon. • Turn your thermostat down in the evenings to create a cooler bedroom to sleep in. • Establish a good bedtime routine. For example, read a book instead of spending more time looking at a screen. Blue light from electronic devices mimics daylight and can trick your brain into staying alert. • Use red or orange bulbs in kids’ night lights as these are some of the least disruptive to sleep.

Diamond Minds
Don’t Do It Once. Don’t Do It Twice.
DO IT 1000 TIMES The Magic of Continuous Effort By Barry Farber
T
he ultimate achievement of an art, skill or profession does not come by one large step. Improvement comes only as the result of continuous effort. That effort needs to be ingrained in your mind, body and soul. What is the art, profession or skill you’re trying to master? In the beginning it seems uncomfortable because we are learning something new. Then at some point we go through a period of boredom...and that can be the time we lose focus or the discipline to continue. But this is where the Breakthroughs occur. We need to keep going and enter the moment where we are no longer thinking about the action. This state of mind can be obtained during any activity, whether it’s sculpting, playing baseball or giving a business presentation. Any activity where you’re either learning something brand new or working on mastering a current project. We go through stages. Think of it this way: there seems to be four stages we go through to reach the point of doing something extremely well without thinking. In the moment. That’s because it’s all that has gone before to build that foundation and comfort.
Here are the 4 stages:
Barry Farber
1. Unconsciously Incompetent This is where we don’t know what we need to do or how to do it. 2. Consciously Incompetent Now we become aware of what we need to do to become competent, but we are not there yet. 3. Consciously Competent Now we are aware of the skills needed and we are competent in the actions but still thinking too much about it. 4. Unconsciously Competent This is the ultimate stage of being comfortable in the present. We are now performing with the entire mind, body and soul as one natural action for peak performance. At every stage discipline is required to stay on the path.
“Confidence doesn’t come out of nowhere. It is a result of something…hours and days and weeks and years of constant work and dedication.” —Roger Staubach
Someone once said the purpose of life is to help others through it. When you have a path in front of you that adds value to those around you it keeps your faith strong and confidence solid. This is a huge part of the momentum when continuing on your disciplines every day. It reminds you of the “why” in what you’re doing and the positive push to continue.
