Chatham Resident Debuts New Novel

A

uthor Lisa Tognola, a resident of Chatham for over twenty years, released her novel As Long As It’s Perfect earlier this fall. The book touches on themes such as home renovation and design, real estate, and suburban life. Says Tognola, “My husband and I have lived in our current home with our three kids for nearly twelve years, a home we built in 2007 and which inspired me to write As Long As It’s Perfect—a novel about one woman’s obsession with perfection and how far she’ll go to get what she wants, no matter the cost to herself and her family. It is a story partially based on our experience building a new home in Chatham.” To learn more about Tognola and to purchase her book, visit www.lisatognola.com.

A Camera Q&A with UNIQUE PHOTO! By Jackie Schatell, Photo by Dan Epstein

C

ameras are not only becoming smarter and more compact–they also make a perfect holiday gift, according to Unique Photo’s President Alexander Sweetwood. Here, Sweetwood shares what is new in the world of cameras and some ideas for holiday shopping.

What’s new in the camera world? Recently we’ve seen a large expansion of the mirrorless camera market with many manufacturers introducing their own take on the mirrorless camera system. Mirrorless cameras, as compared to DSLRs, use the camera’s sensor to relay the image through an electronic viewfinder. Without the need to fit mirrors into their design, mirrorless cameras allow a lighter, more compact camera without sacrificing image quality.

even onto a subject’s eye, with extreme accuracy even if the subject is in motion. This is valuable as it frees photographers up from having to worry whether or not their picture is in focus. Another great feature is the ability to send photos and HD videos to one’s phone, allowing us to share our photographs and videos with the world in higher quality–almost instantly.

Are there any new camera gadgets? Being able to back up your work using on-the-go accessories like the Gnarbox 2.0 lets you store your images from your memory card without the need of a computer. Since it utilizes your cell phone, there’s no need to lug a computer. This lightens the photographer’s load considerably.

Are there any cool new features on cameras these days?

What new types of cameras should people know about?

One great new camera feature is the updated autofocusing system, which lets the camera lock onto a face, and

Fujifilm has created a 100 Megapixel camera called the Fujifilm GFX 100, Winter 2019

which is an amazing feat. Now, you can print photographs larger than life and still see the many details inside. In addition, bridge cameras, which fall between point and shoot and DSLRs, like the Sony RX100 series or the Lumix LX100 II, aren’t acknowledged enough. They are extremely portable, but they have a larger sensor and better lenses than cell phones have, so they can take even more beautiful photographs. They also work better in low light conditions.

What cameras will be popular gifts for the holidays, and why? There are a few! The newly announced Nikon Z50, Canon EOS M6 II, and the Sony A6100 will surely be promising gifts for the holidays. They are extremely compact and will preserve many of our customer’s memories.

What You Need to Do Before

TRAVELING ABR AD P

lanning a trip abroad? That’s exciting! But you have lots to do and less time than you think to get it done. What do you need to accomplish before leaving?

Here’s a handy checklist to help you get your ducks in a row.

Fortunately, FedEx Office is teaming up with RushMyPassport to offer further expedited U.S. passport services. Stop by one of 2,000 FedEx Office locations or visit FedEx.com/passport to complete your application. You can even purchase government-compliant passport photos at their locations. There are six options:

Passport If you have a current passport, check the expiration date. Many countries require that you have at least two to four blank visa pages, and that your passport be valid for 6 months past the last day of your trip. If you don’t have a passport or it needs renewal, get that done first. The U.S. State Department announced an increase in processing time for passports to 6-8 weeks. Even a highercost expedited passport can take three weeks.

• Same-day service - 1 business day • Next-day service - 2 business days • Priority service - 3-5 business days • Rush service - 6-7 business days • Standard service - 8-10 business days • Smart service (adult renewals only) 11-14 business days This doesn’t include shipping, so add one day or more for shipping, or arrange pick-up at their location in select cities.

Visas Some countries don’t require visas for brief visits, but you should check well before leaving. Find the country at travel.state.gov/destination to determine necessary paperwork and allow several weeks for the process. You will typically need to visit the website of that country’s embassy for current visa requirements and instructions. FedEx Office does not currently offer visa services, but plans to in the future. If your destination country doesn’t require a visa, they may require proof of sufficient funds for your trip, proof of onward or return flights and a passport with one blank visa page valid for 6 months beyond the date you arrive.

Contact information Bring along information for the U.S. embassy and consulate, in case of emergency. You should also carry contact information for family members in case anything happens to you. Leave a copy of your travel documents (such as passport) and itinerary with someone back home and carry copies with you (separate from originals, in case of loss or theft).

Money

Insurance

Savvy travelers carry a combination of cash, traveler’s checks and credit cards in separate locations. Learn overall currency exchange rates and make a cheat sheet with that country’s equivalents of $5, $10 and $20. Remember, exchange rates change daily and vary depending on where you exchange money.

Some health insurance policies cover you overseas, but many don’t. You can purchase travel insurance to ensure you’re covered for both doctor or hospital visits and for transporting you to a hospital if necessary. Some renters or homeowners insurance policies cover loss or theft abroad, but you can purchase additional coverage if they don’t.

Exchange some at the airport when you arrive. Then exchange more in a touristy area posting competitive exchange rates to find better deals.

Planning ahead will not only ensure a hassle-free trip, but will give you peace of mind in case the unexpected happens. Knowing what you need before you go will make your trip memorable - for all the right reasons.

Health Consult your doctor to catch up on vaccinations. Find out if the country where you’re traveling requires vaccinations for entry, or which are recommended, on the CDC website: wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/page/travel-vaccines. Vaccines should be administered a month ahead for maximum effectiveness. If you take prescription medications, bring them in their original containers, plus a copy of the prescription(s).

These general guidelines are not exhaustive. Be aware that laws change and vary from country to country. Check relevant resources including travel.state.gov/destination for information about your destination. Read the entry under “Entry/Exit Requirements.” This will give you information on what is required for a U.S. citizen to visit the country under basic circumstances, such as for tourism. For Costa Rica, for example, the State Department says: “For entry into Costa Rica, you must present both a valid passport and a roundtrip/outbound ticket. Your passport must be valid for at least 90 days after your arrival.” You are also instructed to visit the official website for the Embassy of Costa Rica, costarica-embassy.org, to view the most current visa information. If the country listing includes this recommendation, follow the link to obtain more specific information. —BPT Winter 2019

Turn Your Home into a Natural Oasis A s the year comes to an end, many people make resolutions to start the New Year strong. This might mean ramping up your workout routine, increasing your self-care regimen or finding time to de-stress.

The EPA reports we spend 90 percent of our time indoors, but most people feel that spending time in nature has a positive effect on their mental well-being and stress level, according to a recent YouGov study commissioned by VELUX. So, if your goal is to de-stress, here are some healthy behaviors and design tips to help you bring nature’s sanctuary indoors.

Fill your home with photos of nature Surrounding yourself with images of nature can have a positive effect on wellness. Try framing some photos of special memories in nature like a hike with your family, beach sunset or mountain view.

Let in more fresh air and natural light Today’s homes are built tighter and more sealed, which means they trap toxins from daily living - such as cooking, cleaning, pets and more - inside. Adding skylights that can open is a simple home renovation project to improve fresh air flow, helping rid indoor air of pollutants. Additionally, studies show that exposure to natural light helps to sync your circadian rhythm, allowing for better sleep at night.

Fill your home with natural scents Up your chef game by using fresh herbs in your cooking that will fill your kitchen with natural fragrance. Making an indoor herb garden ensures you’ll always have some on hand. You can also incorporate fresh herbs into bouquets or wreaths for a natural air freshener throughout your home.

Meditate or do yoga in the morning Waking up with stretching or meditating is a great way to prepare yourself for a successful day. Open the blinds or curtains on your windows and skylights to 32

let in early morning light and help you feel invigorated and refreshed.

Go green with your décor Reap the benefits of nature by bringing it inside, adding greenery or even fruit into your décor. The possibilities are endless use a bowl of fresh fruit as a centerpiece or mix different sizes of pots to create a succulent gallery. Little touches of green in each room will go a long way.

Use natural cleaning products Many common cleaning products have harsh chemicals that can be inhaled or absorbed into your skin. Combat the dangers of these toxins by switching to natural cleaning products. You’ll feel safer and more relaxed when your home is chemical-free. From boosting your home’s natural light to going green and adding plant life, it’s easy to turn your home into a natural oasis with these simple steps. MassagingtheMindandBody

By Christine S. Maxwell

S

ince opening two years ago, Salt Float Center in Montclair has hosted more than 7,000 visits from clients ages 9 through 86, who have enjoyed the healing effects of float therapy. “I believe that everyone can benefit from float therapy,” states owner Rob McDonald.

The refocusing and rebalancing of one’s sensory awareness are the hallmarks of R.E.S.T., often resulting in profound relaxation and relief from physical and mental pain, including stress, anxiety, depression, sleep disorders, arthritis, and pregnancy-related discomfort.

While floating is considered an alternative therapy, its benefits are well documented in Restrictive Environmental Stimulation Therapy (R.E.S.T.) scientific research.

Floating offered at Salt Float Center draws upon the therapeutic restorative and regenerative effects of R.E.S.T. The center maintains several tub-like facilities–two Float Suites and a Float Orb. Although slightly different in design, both types deliver the same results. Each contains about ten inches of water, includes roughly 1100 pounds of dissolved Epsom salt, and maintains a 93.5-degree water temperature. This salty, temperaturecontrolled, gravity-free environment encourages the therapeutic benefits of R.E.S.T as well as the similar salt-healing attributes of the Dead Sea.

After lying in the tub, turning out the lights, and eliminating any sounds, the client floats effortlessly in a private spa setting for 60-120 minutes. Within the first 20 minutes of floating, cortisol and adrenaline decline while endorphins and dopamine increase, inducing a “runner’s high.” The rapid rush of the feel-good hormones produces a deep state of relaxation. Most guests drift naturally into a meditative state. Inflammation decreases and mental blocks clear, causing a post-treatment euphoria of wellness and creativity that can last for days. States McDonald, “With floating, guests can experience ultimate ‘me time’ in an environment their mind and body have never had the sublime pleasure of enjoying.”
