Cleto

the gardener SHORT STORY BY BRETT CHULU

Cleto grew up in a poor family. He failed to complete Form 2 and he had to start looking for a job to help out his family. He struggled to get jobs as people felt he was still too young to work. When he reached 16 he came to a town to look for work. After months of struggling, he got a job as a gardener for the Moyo family.

Mr and Mrs Moyo were professionals working for good companies. The rough and tumble of life had moulded Cleto into a hard-working young man who was comfortable to work hard with his hands. Within a month of Cleto working for the Moyos, the yard transformed drastically, lawns were thriving and always neatly cut. The flowers blossomed to beautify the driveway. The flowers bowed when Mr and Mrs Moyo drove past. The Moyos were very proud of Cleto and spoke highly of him to their friends whenever they showed them their well-kept yard. The Moyos gladly paid Cleto 60 USD per month as it was a bargain for them, given the fantastic work Cleto was doing. Time flew.Cleto was now 26 years of age ,10 years since Cleto first walked into the Moyos home. One day Cleto came out to them with news that would shatter the Moyos. Cleto would be leaving the Moyos at the end of the month. Cleto was going back to his village. The Moyos could not understand how Cleto could decide to leave them, given that they treated him as their own son. Life was hard from his village and the Moyos wondered how Cleto would survive in the village without a regular income. They reasoned with Cleto that he was making a

grave mistake he would regret for the rest of his life. Cleto, as polite and as respectful as ever, insisted he had to go back to his village. The Moyos lost the battle. The day for parting came. To the Moyos, something had been torn away from them and it was extremely painful to part with Cleto. Mrs Moyo could barely hide her tears whilst Mr Moyo masked the pain knifing its way through his heart , putting on a brave face. They drove Cleto all the way to his village. They arrived at Cleto’s village around 4pm. Cleto directed them into a yard. The Moyos asked him if they were diverting their route to see some neighbours as that would delay their journey back but to their surprise Cleto told them they had arrived. Mr and Mrs Moyo were shocked. They opened their mouths for what seemed an eternity. There was a yard properly fenced, and a rich beautiful orchard. They were no longer in a hurry to go back home as they felt they had to see everything. Cleto took them to the kraal, Mr Moyo had to count the cattle in the kraal. He counted 82, then he counted goats, they were 400. There was a solar-powered neatly, built cottage with a very tasteful and cheeky design. Mrs Moyo /

asked for the convenience room and Cleto gladly led her into the cottage. Her eyes were treated to a feast of a well-designed interior that made her own house a shame. Mrs Moyo could not believe that there was running water in the house and she could freshen herself up in a tastefully designed bathroom. She indiscriminately opened a tape and almost burned her hand with hot water. The Moyos had serious questions for Cleto , why had he lied to them that he was from a poor background. Cleto told them he had not lied to them, he told them that he was going to take them to the home where he grew up, which was about 5km away and he explained to them that where they were at, at that moment was his own property. Mr Moyo quizzed him how he could have acquired a property and build all this wealth from a wage of 60 dollars per month. Cleto told them that it all started with him buying a goat for 30 dollars every month from the first month he got his pay from them.

He shared with the Moyos his simple financial policy, “I resolved that I must reach a point where the number of cattle or cows I must have should be more than my number of years from birth”, he also explained to the Moyos that his orchard was

the education policy for his children. Mrs Moyo were puzzled, and they had to ask this question, “Cleto, you are not married and you don’t have children or maybe you have , do you?” Cleto politely replied:”Yes mum, you’re correct, Iam neither married nor have kids but when I do get married and have children, I am guaranteed their educational funding will be in place.” Mr and Mrs Moyo were shocked. The Moyos decided to sleep over but they failed to sleep that night. They felt ashamed of themselves when they compared themselves to Cleto after discovering that Cleto was wiser and smarter than them in terms of financial wisdom. Mrs Moyo had this to say to Mr Moyo, “Baba Moyo, do you realise Cleto has just ‘retired’ at 26 years of age and he is set up for life?” Exercise: 1) Can you identify the principles of empowerment in this story. 2) What ideas have been sparked in your mind by Cleto’s story? What is your action plan?

BACKGROUND I was born and raised in a christian family in Chitungwiza. We are a family of two kids , my little sister and I.My little sister is a soulmate to me and we are inseparable.l love my parents so much and I feel blessed to have both my parents alive and together. How did you become a Model? Ha ha ha, I believe it was by fate. I never imagined or dreamt to be a model in my life and never had a good reason to become one. Let me say my friends made me join modelling. Do you know why?, because whenever I wore an outfit they commented and even people in the streets always turn heads and shoutout commenting on my dressing. Come to think of it, even during my school days I was always ranked the best dressed and smart boy. I participated in fashion shows at school, so it all linked up, when I finished school i just decided to join modelling because my friends kept encouraging me and even gave me a street name “Our Model or Chimodel Chedu”

Advice to the Youth out there who wants to join the Modelling Industry Modelling is not as easy as most people think, being a model is expensive, you need to keep up appearances and therefore you need side hurstles and a job to sustain this profession. If you are at school I would advise you to finish your studies and join modelling as a part-time job. Modelling is fun and enjoyable, you travel a lot and meet a lot of people and get to learn and inspired and motivated by other people out there. In addition you also get a chance to rub shoulders with big celebrities and prominent people and you get time to learn a lot from their success.

What Challenges have you faced so far in your modelling career? I only have one Challenge Iam facing right now. Just like everyone else in the world, Covid-19 has affected my modelling profession that I have grown to love and enjoy. It has been a month without being called for a job. It’s so stressing because as a model you have to keep up appearances and you need good money for that. I pray that this pandemic ends and may the Almighty God intervene. How do you keep fit? I exercise, I do go for jogging 3 times a week and I always watch my diet. Any special food you eat & special skin lotions you use for your skin? My favorite meal is Spaghetti, baked beans mixed with mayonnaise , vegetables and a big piece of roasted pork. As for my skin, I simply use Nivea lotion, I would like to try other beauty products maybe some day. Does your family support your profession? I would say my mom and my sister supports me 100% which is enough for me. My Dad is not interested at all to my modelling career. Are you at school / college? I finished my O”level in 2016 and joined the modelling industry a year after and I do Online Marketing Courses for now. Any awards so far Not a fan of pageants but i did one in 2019 it was for Mr Harare council and I became the first Prince. Iam mostly a fashion modelling and participating in Pageant haven’t been on mind. But Iam definitely working towards it this 2021. Goals/Vision To own my own studio and take Fashion and Modelling Industry to the next level as I believe Iam a game changer. Production/ Programs you are doing to empower the youth. I have a page called “life of a model” on this page I encourage models, youths and girl child to be the best they can be in life. /

Madzimai (Women) Corner CAN YOU FALL IN LOVE WITH A FOREIGNER?

It’s completely possible that you’re really falling in love with a foreigner but you may also only be falling in love with the idea of being in a relationship with a foreigner. /

POT AFRICA MAGAZINE

In some cases people fall in love with “the idea of dating a foreigner” To some it’s exotic and erotic. It’s like a biggest fantasy coming true to some, but it’s only a good thing if your feelings are true. So it’s best you do a reality check. Ask yourself these questions, what do you know about them, do you know about their values and their deep thoughts on life, love, and death? How about what they want to do in the future or their thoughts on kids and family? Falling in love with a foreigner means you need to think about the future of your relationship a lot more than if you fell in love with someone who lives where you come from. It might seem like you just forget about it and “ live in the now” but the way you’re feeling now have a big impact on your future. HERE ARE SOME OF THE THINGS YOU NEED TO CONSIDER WHEN FALLING IN LOVE WITH A FOREIGNER Are you willing to live away from home your entire life? When you’re falling in love with a foreigner who still lives in his or her home country you may have to face the reality of a difficult road ahead. They may assume you will be willing to move in their country with them when you have no interest in doing so at all. Do you both want to live in the same place? Being on the same page about where you both would like to potentially live is a huge deal if you really want to make a relationship with them work. Does his or her culture and customs fit yours? Are you ready for legalities if you get married? Since you’re dating and falling in love with a foreigner, one can only assume the intent is to be married one day. If you can’t see that future, then you might want to rethink if being with them is even the right idea. If you definitely intend to be married with a foreigner then be prepared of the legalities of the marriage process. There is some extra paperwork for the marriage and sometimes one can be seen as a ruse for someone to gain citizenship. This is just the beginning. TO BE CONTINUED. WH AT I S YO U R B LO O D TYPE? “ Most people are actually realising that they do not know their blood type. Knowing your blood type can be crucial in a medical emergency, but it can also offer some interesting insight into your health. See how your blood type might play a role in your well-being, based on results of some recent studies’

B

lood types are determined by the presence or absence of certain antigens (proteins on the red blood cells) – substances that can trigger an immune response (cause your body to fight) if they are foreign to the body. There are four major blood groups determined by the presence or absence of two antigens – A and B – on the surface of red blood cells. In addition to the A and B antigens, there is a protein called the Rh factor, which can be either present (+) or absent (–), creating the 8 most common blood types (A+; A-; AB+; AB-; B+; B-; O+& O-) Your blood group is determined by the genes you inherit from your parents. Each biological parent donates one of two ABO genes to their child. The A and B genes are dominant and the O gene is recessive. For example, if an O gene is paired with an A gene, the blood type will be A. Heart Disease Of the eight main blood types, people with type O have the lowest risk for heart disease. People with blood types AB and B are at the greatest risk, which could be a result of higher rates of inflammation for these blood types. A hearty health lifestyle is particularly important for people with types AB and B blood. Cancer Studies have found that people with blood type A or AB are at higher risk for stomach cancer. Additionally, if you have A, B or AB blood types, you may have an increased risk for pancreatic cancer. If you fall in this grouping, stock up on caner fighting foods, which can help reduce the risk for developing cancer. While your blood type is a genetic gift that cannot be altered, making healthy choices can help you reduce the risks to your health.

AGRICULTURE & TECHNOLOGY IN AFRICA

New Farming Technology for Africa New advancements in technologies ranging from robotics and drones to computer vision software have completely transformed modern Agriculture. Some major technologies that are most commonly being utilized by farms include , harvest automation, autonomous tractors, seeding and weeding and drones. DID YOU KNOW OF THE New Agricultural App Hello Tractor? Hello Tractor dubbed Uber- for- tractors platform makes Agriculture machinery affordable for African small- scale farmers Hello Tractor sells a GPS monitoring device that is installed onto a tractor. Owners can subscribe to the software-as-a-service solution app to track their tractor and monitor the work it is doing, the operator’s performance, fuel usage and maintenance needs. Hello Tractor doesn’t earn revenue from the booking of tractors; it makes money from

selling the GPS devices as well as from the software subscriptions. Hello Tractor has been compared to an Uber for tractors. Like the ride-hailing app, it uses technology to connect farmers with tractor owners but there are differences. Agents assist with the bookings and tractor owners need to buy the company’s GPS device to attach to their tractors to track movements and accept booking requests. Founder and CEO, Jehiel Oliver, recognised an opportunity when he learnt of the lack of mechanisation in the African agricultural industry. Hello Tractor Manage risk. Unlock new value. Grow your business. Hello Tractor’s award-winning IoT platform helps farm equipment owners, dealers, banks, and farmers in need of services earn more. With the worlds largest farm equipment marketplace, we are unlocking value across the ecosystem.

MEET THE YOUNG ZIMBABWEAN WHO HAS B E E N O N E O F E U R O P E ’ S B R E A KT H R O U G H P L AY E R S T H I S S E A S O N . BY CARLOS CHIBANDA (NY TELEVISION)

Tinotenda “Tino” Kadewere (born 5 January 1996) is a Zimbabwean professional footballer who plays for Ligue 1 side Lyon and the Zimbabwe national team as a striker. His father Onias Kadewere died of heart failure in January 2015. As a result Kadewere took over the running of Highfield Soccer Academy which his father formed in the 90s. Kadewere attended Prince Edward High School.

In his football career, Tinotenda first played for Prince Edward High School before his scoring prowess got him noticed by Harare City Football Club, which he joined in 2014.Kadewere has been capped for the Zimbabwe under-17, under-20 and under-23 teams. He captained the Zimbabwe under-20 team at the COSAFA under-20 Youth Championships which were held in Lesotho in 2013. He was also Under-17 captain in 2012. He is a member of the Zimbabwe National Football Team and was part of the team that qualified for the AFCON 2019 finals in Egypt. In 2014, Kadewere started playing for Harare City F.C. in the Zimbabwe Premier Soccer League, after he had finished playing for his school team. During the first half of the season Kadewere scored 7 goals. July 2015 Kadewere was in Sweden undergoing trials that were facilitated by South African academy Diambars in collaboration with his agent Gibson Mahachi. Kadewere reportedly impressed Swedish side Djurgarden when he featured in their friendly against another Swedish side AIK. Kadewere chose Swedish club Djurgarden and joined on loan with an option for the club to sign him 32 /

Tinotenda “Tino” Kadewere permanently on a 4 year contract. He made his debut in August 2015 and scored 13 goals in 43 appearances. He left Djugardens IF for France where he signed for LeHavre. The move to Le Havre AC was a significant step in his quest to move to the French Ligue 1, which is one of Europe’s top five leagues. Kadawere finished as the league”s top scorer with 24 goals. His strike rate at Le Havre was phenomenal but contributed more than just goals. His dream to play in the French top division soon came true when the former Harare City man signed a four-and-a-half contract with the Ligue 1 side Olympique Lyon in January 2020 but was loaned back to Le Havre for the remainder of the 2019-20 season, which was officially cancelled due to the Covid-19 crisis. Speaking at the presentation, the former Prince Edward School pupil said: “I am very happy to join OL. It’s a very big club, a club I dreamed of. I worked a lot to be able to sit in this place. I would like to thank the president, Juninho and Bruno Cheyrou who all facilitated my arrival. “The players were very friendly to me and integrated me

directly into the group. To be a good player, you have to be a team player.” “I have my own qualities, but I especially know how to blend into a collective. I like to hold the ball. Growing up, I always had a ball between my feet. I’m also pretty quick. But again, the most important thing is to be a team player.” he added. Lyon secured Kadawere for 12 million euros and the strong, battling forward has forced his way into the first team. Impressive nearly every time he gets a chance, Lyon coach Rudi Garcia is now starting Kadawere regularly, with Moussa Dembele dropping to the bench. Garcia commented: “He’s quite a complete player because his passing is good and he reads the game well. And he’s a quality finisher – as we’ve seen.”The 25 year old

strikerhas scored seven goals and provide three assists in his first 16 league appearances at Lyon. That’s four more goals than Neymar has managed. When asked how he was able to adapt so quickly, Kadewere said:“I had a very good season with Le Havre and when I got here I realized I had good teammates who work all the time with me, and who talk to me a lot. When you play with players like my teammates then it’s magnificent.” The striker also received praise from the Zimbabwe national team coach Zdravko Logarusic, saying that, “I have been closely watching him and I must admit that the boy is a formidable force. He is riding high like a Warrior. He is raising the country’s flag high.”Tino is currently living in France with his wife Sharon and

children Keith and Khameel Kadewere. The striker is enjoying life in France; he said it’s like a mini African state because there are many blacks there and he wouldn’t mind spending all his holidays there with his family. The move to Lyon seems Kadewere overtake Marvelous Nakamba as the country’s most expensive player Nakamba moved to English Premier League side Aston Villa for a reported £11 million fee from Belgian side Club Brugge in July.

THE ART OF POETRY IN AFRICA /

POT AFRICA MAGAZINE

”Word”

Smith Rayanne Chidzvondo Introduces Moonchild District By Tsitsi Ndabambi Moonchild District is a space which was created by Prince Rayanne Chidzvondo to promote poetry as entertainment. The creation of this new movement was his means of placing poetry in the city by supporting up and rising poets and helping them gain skill in presenting their penned thoughts into voices. “My team and I found the movement as an excellent way of catering for writers and performers because the spaces around us have always been less willing to engage poets,” said Ndi Rayanne as he is well known on stage. Rayanne describes himself as ‘He of the Moon the sworn in Minister of the Misunderstood, defender of all things beautiful in the moon’s darkness and a heavy lifter of souls. His true belief lies within the hand

that holds his pen and sometimes the ink spills in rogue movements to work that will shock you.’ Born and raised in Harare, his first encounter with spoken word changed his life at the age of 16 and since then he had a passion and a dream to take along like-minded poets and stage shows instead of burying their natural talent. The former Zimpapers journalist and presenter of YouTube show (Campus Crush), Rayanne has just published his debut poetry collection “Under My Skin”. “The objective is for us to become one of the best African creatives, venture into all forms of arts, exploring and creating. To build something that will help us and the world at large to cope through this world we live in. I hope to perform and travel a lot, venture into cultural exploration in the creative world and learn as well as teach,” he commented. The NAMA nominee and award winning poet, with the little experience that he was not selfish with sharing his stage glory, instead it inspired him to invite other artists and authors to join him in his

dream. With that they staged their first ever sold out performance at Ela the Garden in Newlands where they merged acoustic music and poetry which the restaurant owner Eleni Athitaki matched the romantic garden setup with a succulent traditional Greek cuisine accompanied by the signature wines. “We are planning many shows at different venues with the hope that we will tour the whole world taking along as many poets as we can help to the top,” he said. “So far I have shared the stage with musician Thando, 19 year old Rubzi Ruvimbo Chipo Chikanda, Lisa G Shumba aka Call Me Refined and Tanaka Ects Tshuma. Each individual brings a variety of creativity that keeps the gig on hype touching on different topics”. This team of young spoken word blood is coming with a force and their work promises to escalate to the international platforms given that they are granted much larger audiences nationally.
