In the midst of uncertainty about the housing industry and recent international economic crises, many are asking, “What’s next?” While nobody can predict with certainty what the future may bring, one constant we can count on is the fact that real estate has always proven a safe investment in the long run. Although Orange County is not insulated entirely from national trends, recent data indicate that our local market continues to remain healthier than many other parts of the state. This only further underscores the fact that real estate is indeed a local business. One promising indicator is the shrinking number of foreclosures statewide. The month of September saw more than 60% fewer foreclosures than August, more than a third less than the same month a year ago1. Orange County trails other Southern California counties where foreclosed properties constitute as much as two-thirds of recent sales activity, highlighting the fact that our local market is generally more stable than the rest of the region2. September homes sales in the county were up more than 60% from a year ago3. The California Association of Realtors® predicts that the economy will begin to stabilize over the next few months and that we will see more than a 12% increase in home sales next year4. It may be too early to tell if the worst of our economic woes are behind us, but all indications are hopeful that we are starting to see more light at the end of this tunnel.
