September 26 – October 2, 2021 Banned Books Week is an annual event celebrating the freedom to read. Launched in 1982, it was created in response to a sudden surge in the number of challenges to books in schools, bookstores and libraries. It highlights the value of free and open access to information. Banned Books Week brings together the entire book community — librarians, booksellers, publishers, journalists, teachers, and readers of all types — in shared support of the freedom to seek and to express ideas, even those some consider unorthodox or unpopular.

This year’s American Library Association’s Top 10 Most Challenged Books list includes titles that address racism and racial justice, as well as those that shared the stories of Black, Indigenous, or people of color. As with previous years, LGBTQ+ content also dominated the books on the list.

Building Community One Book at a Time

Dear Reader,

As book lovers, we love good punctuation. We embrace a perfect comma, a clever parenthetical comment, or a well-placed semicolon.

However, it feels like we have lived and are living in a land of asterisks, ellipses, and question marks.

People often ask us “How is the store doing?” and our answer is often “Fine?” We are still here; our doors are still open. We are excited about the return of in-person events (which maybe should have an asterisk) and the potential of kid-distanced storytimes. We are delighted about our new managers – no caveats necessary—and we are excited about the abundance of new books and gifts.

But we have also lived in the ellipses. We’ve omitted, we’ve elided, and we’ve simply lost time. And yet… We are cautiously optimistic and ultimately hopeful. We’ve had a few events in-store and have been overjoyed by seeing faces in our events space. We’re hiring and are buoyed by the number of applicants who tell us, “I love coming here and would love to work here.” And even though the future at the best of times is a gigantic question mark, we have no doubt that we have the support of you, dear Reader. Thank you.

WE'RE MANAGING! W

hen someone asks, "How are you doing?", just like everyone else these days, a number of answers come to mind. Well, since Erin Chervenock and Maia Kreis became our new Store Manager and Assistant Manager (respectively) in June, we're happy to say that "We're managing!"

As you'll see, each of them comes to us with a wealth of experience and varied interests and, together, they are indeed a dynamic duo of talents and expertise.

Erin is a Bellingham native, growing up on Telegraph Road before there was a mall, with two sisters, a number of cats, and a few dogs along the way. She recalls the first book she was able to read, a Little Golden Book called Lady (of Lady and the Tramp fame). Her mother recalls reading it over and over to 4-year old Erin, who memorized it and then was off on her lifetime reading adventure. Erin spent her school days in the library, her summers at the public library, and, as she got older, at Village Books or Tony's Coffeehouse with book in hand. She credits Chuck and Dee Robinson for inspiring her to become a bookseller, and when Erin (L) and Maia (R) she left Bellingham for college, began a 12 year career in bookselling with Barnes & Noble in the Seattle area. Erin's degree is in English Literature, with the plan to move into Library Sciences, but the pull of bookselling was strong, so she stayed with it.

After too many years in Seattle and drained of the will to deal with Seattle traffic, she relocated to Bellingham to raise her son. She thought getting back into bookselling was a great idea, and applied to just one bookstore: Village Books and Paper Dreams. Just a few months later, she was delighted to become the Store Manager at the place that first inspired her to sell books. Village's previous Store Manager, Lauren Sommer, has moved on to pursue different passions, and her imprint on Village Books is still very palpable. Erin is eternally grateful to Lauren, for her open and sharing ways, and for embodying the culture and beliefs of Village so well.

You can typically find Erin perusing the Fiction or Sci-Fi shelves. She is a fan of Anthony Doerr, Margaret Atwood, Neil Gaiman, Mark Z Danielewski, Haruki Murakami, and, in general, any authors that tell a quirky story well. Her favorite author is Franz Kafka, and thinks everyone should read The Trial.

New Managers

Maia hails from Bothell, but has lived in numerous locations around the Pacific Northwest. As a young person, Maia wanted to be a teacher and read aloud to her bedroom every day. Her family likes to reminisce that it didn’t matter what book she read, it always had the same content: “and the bear went up the tree” [turns page] “and the bear went up the tree” [turns page]…and so on. Much like in her childhood, Maia still loves reading books about animals, whether they are children’s or adult books. She also likes mysteries, thrillers, and anything about snails. Yes, snails. You may find Maia perusing the nature book section, or over in Paper Dreams feeding her obsession with tiny bowls.

The King County Library System is where Maia found herself in her first job, which morphed into multiple jobs over the years, only leaving to pursue her Biology degree and passion for teaching and science in Oregon, where she became an Outdoor Educator.

Maia enjoyed many years in multiple locations leading science hikes; pointing out fossils, insects, flowers, and animals to elementary school students! Though fun and very enriching, it was time to put down roots.

Maia now happily lives in Bellingham with her partner and two very sassy kittens. She is excited to start this new chapter in her life, combining her first love, reading, with her second loves, teaching and organizing, as the new Assistant Manager!

We're happy to have them both on our management team and look forward to all of the fun and exciting things they'll help us do in our stores and with our community. Stop by, say hello to both Erin and Maia, swap book recommendations, and welcome them aboard in their new roles!

Scotty VanDryver of KAFE Radio and Ken Jennings of Jeopardy! fame will co-host this battle of wits as teams of three compete once again for the traveling Totten Trophy. Ryan Budds returns with his slick virtual format which immediately calculates who answers correctly in the quickest amount of time.

WPJC seeks to build a culture of peace by educating and empowering our community to action, so the theme for this year's “Rad & Real: Turning Imagination Into Action" bridges their capacity to radically reimagine a better future with the relationships, practices and follow-through necessary to make it possible. International Day of Peace is the WPJC signature event

Historic Fairhaven Association's Winterfest seeks 300-500 word stories expressing 'The Magic of the Season'. Selected stories will be featured in two live readings in December and printed posters of the works will hang in the windows of local businesses during Winterfest.

There is a $5 entry fee. Authors can be of any age, 5 to 95 and beyond! Once you have registered you will receive submission instructions. Final submissions are due November 17th, 2021.

WhaMemWriMo Workshop Series Write Your Memoir in September!

Thursdays in September, 5pm-6:30pm As part of the seventh annual Whatcom Memoir Writing Month (see Village Books and Red Wheelbarrow Writers' webpages for info), this series of workshops will help you along the way as you turn your memories into memoir.

The goal for each writer is 1,666 words every day. At the end of September you will have 50,000 words: a book. You will have given shape and voice to the stories and adventures you have always wanted to share, the stories your readers want to hear. These workshops, all taught or led by experienced memoir writers and teachers, can be taken as a whole, or you can select from the individual workshops to suit your needs and schedule.

Important Changes - Please Read We are pleased (excited, nervous, cautiously optimistic) to announce that we will be hosting in-person events beginning September 2! We know that there will be many questions around this so we’re going to try to give a clear picture of what in-person events will look like in the midst of an ongoing pandemic. Naturally, the number one question will be with regards to our Covid-19 safety protocol.

We want to ensure the safety of our authors and attendees so here is our plan:

FAQS: 1) Will Village Books continue to host virtual events?

YES! Our event listings will state very clearly whether an event is in-person or virtual.

2) Will any of the in-person events be hybrid?

In other words, will folks be able to watch an inperson event via Zoom or another platform? Not yet.

Events that take place in our Readings Gallery will have 3) Why do we now have to pay $5 to reserve a capacity limit of 50. This is less than 50% of the room’s a seat when Village Books’ events have standard capacity. Our mask policy for events will be that all historically been free in the Readings Gallery? attendees wear masks, regardless of their vaccination status.

In-Person Event The Orchid Mantis follows the turbulent lives of innocent, six-year-old Skye and her adopted older sister, Amber. At first, Skye is enthralled with her new sister, but soon finds herself caught in a web of lies, fear, and deceit. Over time, the stakes climb higher and higher for Skye, and just when she thinks she has the upper hand, COVID-19 strikes, the city is plunged into lockdown, and her world changes forever. Canadian-born author, Kerry Claire, has worked as a nurse practitioner and dog trainer for much of her life. She now lives in the Pacific Northwest with her husband and their collie, Annie.

Using an infamous deception about a fake mountain range in British Columbia as her jumping-off point, Katie Ives examines the lure of blank spaces on the map and the value of the imagination.

Imaginary Peaks details the mystery of the Riesenstein Hoax within the larger context of cartography, exploration, and climbing history. Katie Ives's writing has appeared in numerous publications, including The New York Times, Outside, The Rumpus, and Adventure Journal. Ives is editor in chief at Alpinist magazine and lives in Cambridge, Vermont. This is her first book.

In-Person Event In this new, full-color edition of the firstever hiking guide to the state's historic trails, historian and hiker Judy Bentley teams up with veteran guidebook author Craig Romano to lead adventurers of all abilities along trails on the coast, over mountains, through national forests, across plateaus, and on the banks of the Columbia River.
