Books Unite Us. CENSORSHIP Divides Us. Celebrate Your Right to Read! September 26 – October 2, 2021 Banned Books Week is an annual event celebrating the freedom to read. Launched in 1982, it was created in response to a sudden surge in the number of challenges to books in schools, bookstores and libraries. It highlights the value of free and open access to information. Banned Books Week brings together the entire book community — librarians, booksellers, publishers, journalists, teachers, and readers of all types — in shared support of the freedom to seek and to express ideas, even those some consider unorthodox or unpopular. This year’s American Library Association’s Top 10 Most Challenged Books list includes titles that address racism and racial justice, as well as those that shared the stories of Black, Indigenous, or people of color. As with previous years, LGBTQ+ content also dominated the books on the list.

Building Community One Book at a Time

Dear Reader,

As book lovers, we love good punctuation. We embrace a perfect comma, a clever parenthetical comment, or a well-placed semicolon. However, it feels like we have lived and are living in a land of asterisks, ellipses, and question marks. People often ask us “How is the store doing?” and our answer is often “Fine?” We are still here; our doors are still open. We are excited about the return of in-person events (which maybe should have an asterisk) and the potential of kid-distanced storytimes. We are delighted about our new managers – no caveats necessary—and we are excited about the abundance of new books and gifts. But we have also lived in the ellipses. We’ve omitted, we’ve elided, and we’ve simply lost time. And yet… We are cautiously optimistic and ultimately hopeful. We’ve had a few events in-store and have been overjoyed by seeing faces in our events space. We’re hiring and are buoyed by the number of applicants who tell us, “I love coming here and would love to work here.” And even though the future at the best of times is a gigantic question mark, we have no doubt that we have the support of you, dear Reader. Thank you.

WE'RE MANAGING! W

hen someone asks, "How are you doing?", just like everyone else these days, a number of answers come to mind. Well, since Erin Chervenock and Maia Kreis became our new Store Manager and Assistant Manager (respectively) in June, we're happy to say that "We're managing!" As you'll see, each of them comes to us with a wealth of experience and varied interests and, together, they are indeed a dynamic duo of talents and expertise.

Erin is a Bellingham native, growing up on Telegraph Road before there was a mall, with two sisters, a number of cats, and a few dogs along the way. She recalls the first book she was able to read, a Little Golden Book called Lady (of Lady and the Tramp fame). Her mother recalls reading it over and over to 4-year old Erin, who memorized it and then was off on her lifetime reading adventure. Erin spent her school days in the library, her summers at the public library, and, as she got older, at Village Books or Tony's Coffeehouse with book in hand. She credits Chuck and Dee Robinson for inspiring her to become a bookseller, and when Erin (L) and Maia (R) she left Bellingham for college, began a 12 year career in bookselling with Barnes & Noble in the Seattle area. Erin's degree is in English Literature, with the plan to move into Library Sciences, but the pull of bookselling was strong, so she stayed with it. After too many years in Seattle and drained of the will to deal with Seattle traffic, she relocated to Bellingham to raise her son. She thought getting back into bookselling was a great idea, and applied to just one bookstore: Village Books and Paper Dreams. Just a few months later, she was delighted to become the Store Manager at the place that first inspired her to sell books. Village's previous Store Manager, Lauren Sommer, has moved on to pursue different passions, and her imprint on Village Books is still very palpable. Erin is eternally grateful to Lauren, for her open and sharing ways, and for embodying the culture and beliefs of Village so well. You can typically find Erin perusing the Fiction or Sci-Fi shelves. She is a fan of Anthony Doerr, Margaret Atwood, Neil Gaiman, Mark Z Danielewski, Haruki Murakami, and, in general, any authors that tell a quirky story well. Her favorite author is Franz Kafka, and thinks everyone should read The Trial. Continued... Shop 24/7 at villagebooks.com

New Managers

continued from page 5

Maia hails from Bothell, but has lived in numerous locations around the Pacific Northwest. As a young person, Maia wanted to be a teacher and read aloud to her bedroom every day. Her family likes to reminisce that it didn’t matter what book she read, it always had the same content: “and the bear went up the tree” [turns page] “and the bear went up the tree” [turns page]…and so on. Much like in her childhood, Maia still loves reading books about animals, whether they are children’s or adult books. She also likes mysteries, thrillers, and anything about snails. Yes, snails. You may find Maia perusing the nature book section, or over in Paper Dreams feeding her obsession with tiny bowls. The King County Library System is where Maia found herself in her first job, which morphed into multiple jobs over the years, only leaving to pursue her Biology degree and passion for teaching and science in Oregon, where she became an Outdoor Educator. Maia enjoyed many years in multiple locations leading science hikes; pointing out fossils, insects, flowers, and animals to elementary school students! Though fun and very enriching, it was time to put down roots. Maia now happily lives in Bellingham with her partner and two very sassy kittens. She is excited to start this new chapter in her life, combining her first love, reading, with her second loves, teaching and organizing, as the new Assistant Manager! We're happy to have them both on our management team and look forward to all of the fun and exciting things they'll help us do in our stores and with our community. Stop by, say hello to both Erin and Maia, swap book recommendations, and welcome them aboard in their new roles!

New Fiction Cloud Cuckoo Land by Anthony Doerr

available in September, hardcover, Scribner

This new novel will blow your mind. The story line spans centuries across time and space, to bring you incredible characters all united by an ancient book. It is a beautiful tribute to libraries, stories, and our precious and precarious planet. I haven’t consumed a book this fast since my reading by flashlight under the covers days. Please, for the love of books, make this your next read! –Emily

A new novel from the author of All the Light We Cannot See

With the same brilliant cadence and grace as All the Light We Cannot See, Doerr brings us the amazing life of a book, carried through the years and through different cultures. His book, titled after the book of his story, begins in medias res: in the middle of events we do not yet understand. With each turn of the page, the story twines through different times and different characters, all with one key similarity. This book will win many awards, deservedly. –Erin

Bewilderment

Poison for Breakfast

by Richard Powers

by Lemony Snicket

available in September, hardcover, W.W. Norton

He learns of an experimental neurofeedback treatment to bolster Robin’s emotional control, one that involves training the boy on the recorded patterns of his mother’s brain.

The Mad Women’s Ball

Over the course of his long and auspicious career, Mr. Snicket has investigated many things, including villainy, treachery, conspiracy, ennui, and various suspicious fires. In this book, he is investigating his own death. It is different from other books Mr. Snicket has written. It could be said to be a book of philosophy, something almost no one likes, but it is also a mystery, and many people claim to like those. Certainly Mr. Snicket didn’t relish the dreadful task of solving it, but he had no choice. It was put in front of him, right there, on his plate.

The Reading List

After the childhood death of her sister, she placed her faith in both the celebrated psychiatrist Dr. Charcot and science. But everything begins to change when she meets Eugenie. Because Eugenie has a secret: she sees spirits. Eugenie is determined to escape from the asylum—and the bonds of her gender—and seek out those who will believe in her.

This is just a ver y sweet and heartwarming story about love and friendship. Set in London, widower Mukesh lives a quiet life after losing his wife. Mukesh finds the library after deciding to honor his wife’s love of books. There the pair make a friendship over the list of books as they read through them and talk about them and life. –Kelly E.

Horror The Death of Jane Lawrence by Caitlin Starling

available in October, hardcover, St. Martin’s Press

Practical, unassuming Jane Shoringfield has done the calculations, and decided that the most secure path forward is this: a husband, in a marriage of convenience, who will allow her to remain independent and occupied with meaningful work. Her first choice, the dashing but reclusive doctor Augustine Lawrence, agrees to her proposal with only one condition: that she must never visit him at Lindridge Hall, his crumbling family manor outside of town. Yet on their wedding night, an accident strands her at his door in a pitch-black rainstorm, and she finds him changed. Set in a dark-mirror version of post-war England, Starling crafts a new kind of gothic horror from the bones of the beloved canon. by Jess Walter

A widely praised and exciting piece of historical fiction set in Washington. The Spokane of 1909 was a major crossroads of commerce and social upheaval. Workers were treated horribly. Walter creates an appealing pair of brothers who navigate the turmoil as the budding labor movement pushes back, and then gets pushed back- violently. Meticulously researched, fast-moving, and involving. –Rick

by Bryan Washington

A page-turner and a tear-jerker, Bryan Washington's novel accurately depicts gay relationships in the internet age. Holding absolutely nothing back, you'll find yourself growing an affinity for all the characters in the novel as if they are your own friends. I tore through this in a couple of days, and am so excited to see what Bryan Washington does next. –Peter

The plot and premise stray from what Backman has done before but the story unfolds with the same humor and pitch-perfect poignancy that we love him for. –Emily

Wildly different from her charming first novel Convenience Store Woman, Earthlings is an alarming tale of a woman who believes that she is an alien. Now in Paperback Graphic Novel

Mother Daughter Widow Wife

Far Sector

by Robin Wasserman

available now, paperback, Scribner

Robin Wasserman's latest novel is a fascinating study on memory, identity, and family. Wendy Doe turns up at a memory clinic having lost all trace of her past. A blank slate, she is studied by a young researcher named Lizzie. As she delves into what caused this amnesiac break, Lizzie is forced to look at her own life and identity and to ask, “Who am I, really?” This is a very compelling read. –Claire

Want

by Lynn Steger Strong

by N.K. Jemisin, illustrated by Jamal Campbell

available now, paperback, Picador

available in October, paperback, DC Comics

Newly chosen Green Lantern S o j o u r n e r “J o” Mullein has been protecting the City Enduring, a massive metropolis of 20 billion people. The city has maintained peace for over 500 years by stripping its citizens of their ability to feel. As a result, violent crime is virtually unheard of. But that’s all about to change in this new graphic novel that gives a DC’s Young Animal spin to the legacy of the Green Lanterns!

One of my favorite books released in 2020, Want follows a mother living in Brooklyn who has just filed for bankruptcy. Meditative and quietly angry, Want shines a light on the seemingly ordinary moments in everyday life, and makes them grander in scope. Strong has a commanding presence on the page, one that makes Want a novel you must read in one sitting. –Peter

A Spindle Splintered by Alix E. Harrow

available in October, hardcover, Tordotcom

I’m really selective when it comes to reading fairy tale re-tellings. This new feminist twist on the Sleeping Beauty tale was well worth the read for its fresh premise. Zinnia is doomed to die in her 21st year as a result of water poisoning in her Ohio town. On her 21st birthday, she’s transported to the world of the ‘real’ Sleeping Beauty where she’s determined to prevent the fatal prick of the finger. Filled with cool illustrations, this little novella is a delight. –Claire

Dune’s mother is patient zero of a mysterious illness that stops people in their tracks—in mid-sentence, mid-action, midlife—casting them into a nonresponsive state from which no one recovers. Thus begins a visceral story that’s a twisted version of Oliver Twist. Pheby’s writing grabs hold and doesn’t let go. Added bonus, the LIBRO.FM audiobook is amazingly performed. Even better news, it’s the first in a trilogy. This is a well-told tale that deserves to take its time in the telling. –Paul

April in Spain by John Banville

Booker Prize winner John Banville returns with a dramatic new mystery on the Spanish coast in this dark and evocative follow up to national bestseller Snow. April was murdered by her brother, years ago—the conclusion to an unspeakable scandal that shook one of Ireland’s foremost political dynasties. Unable to ignore his instincts, Quirke makes a call back home to Ireland and soon Detective St. John Strafford is dispatched to Spain. But he’s not the only one en route. A relentless hitman is on the hunt for his latest prey, and the next victim might be Quirke himself.

Village Books & Paper Dreams Owner & Gift Buyer Kelly Evert Shares Her Top Kitchen Picks for the Season

“If you’re afraid of butter, use cream.” ~Julia Child

A

s I write this, the blackberries are ready for picking. I shared a patch of berries this morning with a mama deer and her baby that were also enjoying the berries just as much as I was. The nettlesome yet incredibly yummy (high in beneficial vitamins and minerals, fiber, and antioxidants) blackberry gives us that sweet smell that really lets us know autumn is around the corner. That also means the apples and pumpkins will be following close behind. And we all know what that means…baking! You can see on pages 31-32 that our employees are excited to get back to baking and we are sure you are as well. As we all get back into the kitchen and start cooking we have beefed up our cooking section. From rolling pins and mixing bowls, to tableware, and washing up, we have a selection to drool over. As seen on The Great British Bakeoff, Mason Cash have designed and created loved bowls for over 100 years. Mason Cash had been producing mixing bowls during the 1800’s, but in 1901 they designed and manufactured the very first iconic Mason Cash mixing bowl. The design of the bowl has endured the test of time and has become something of a design classic. In fact, the design has barely altered since then, which is why the brand is still renowned for its innovative, classic kitchenware today. Made from post-consumer recycled materials, Geometry towels have fast become one of our customer’s favorites. Geometry was created by entrepreneur brothers, Matt and Jason Gutierrez. Driven by their belief that through thoughtful design and creativity, everyday products can be elevated to new levels of utility and beauty, the brothers launched Geometry in the fall of 2019 to bring artistic and functional freshness to the world of home interiors.

Talking to Strangers :

by Lindy West

available in September, paperback, Hachette

What We Should Know about the People We Don't Know

by Malcolm Gladwell

available in September, paperback, Hachette

Talking to Strangers is a classically Gladwellian intellectual adventure, a challenging and controversial excursion through history, psychology, and scandals taken straight from the news. He revisits the deceptions of Bernie Madoff, the trial of Amanda Knox, the suicide of Sylvia Plath, the Jerry Sandusky pedophilia scandal at Penn State University, and the death of Sandra Bland—throwing our understanding of these and other stories into doubt.

From the moment powerful men started falling to the #MeToo movement, the lamentations began: this is feminism gone too far, this is injustice, this is a witch hunt. In The Witches Are Coming, firebrand author of the New York Times bestselling memoir and now critically acclaimed Hulu TV series Shrill, Lindy West, turns that refrain on its head. You think this is a witch hunt? Fine. You've got one.

The Movement for a Future without Policing & Prisons

by Colin Kaepernick

available in October, hardcover, Kaepernick

Abolition for the People brings together 30 essays representing a diversity of voices— political prisoners, grassroots organizers, scholars, and relatives of those killed by the anti-Black terrorism of policing and prisons. This collection presents readers with a moral choice: “Will you continue to be actively complicit in the perpetuation of these systems,” Kaepernick asks in his introduction, “or will you take action to dismantle them for the benefit of a just future?”

Graphic Edition! On Tyranny Graphic Edition : Twenty Lessons From the Twentieth Century by Timothy Snyder illustrated by Nora Krug

available in October, paperback, Ten Speed Press

In this graphic edition, Nora Krug draws from her highly inventive art style to breathe new life, color, and power into Snyder’s riveting historical references, turning a quick-read pocket guide of lessons into a visually striking rumination. In a time of great uncertainty and instability, this edition of On Tyranny emphasizes the importance of being active, conscious, and deliberate participants in resistance.

CONTEMPORARY CULTURAL COMMENTARY

History is a construction. What happens when we begin to consider stories at the margins, when we grant them centrality? How does that complicate our certainties about who we are as individuals, as nations, as human beings? Through the lens of visual art, literature, film, and the author’s lived experience, Out of the Sun examines the depiction of Black histories in art, offering new perspectives to challenge the accepted narrative.

Business Collective Wisdom :

Lessons, Inspiration, and Advice from Women over 50

In the much-anticipated follow-up to the bestselling In the Company of Women, Grace Bonney turns her attention to older women in a celebration of intergenerational bonds between women, and the role those bonds play in sharing vital knowledge, stories, power, and history through generations. In this rich and multilayered collection of interviews, conversations, and intimate photographs, over 100 trailblazing women describe the ups, downs, and lessons learned while forging their unique paths. Collective Wisdom celebrates the stories of those who have been there and know the road—from an Olympic athlete and a NASA team member to award-winning artists, activists, writers, and filmmakers, from women in their fifties to centenarians.

Vanderbilt : The Rise and Fall of an American Dynasty by Anderson Cooper and Katherine Howe available in September, hardcover, Harper

New York Times bestselling author and journalist Anderson Cooper teams with bestselling historian and novelist Katherine Howe to chronicle the rise and fall of a legendary American dynasty—his mother’s family, the Vanderbilts. This new book chronicles the lives of some of the most remarkable members of this famous and fractured family who re-defined conspicuous consumption. Drawing on never-before-seen documents, the often-rollicking narrative spans from the 18th century to today, from Cornelius Vanderbilt, the son of a Staten Island ferryman, whose pursuit of money bordered on the pathological, to what remains of the Vanderbilt dynasty now.

History About Time : A History of Civilization in Twelve Clocks by David Rooney

Travels With George : In Search of Washington and His Legacy

available now, hardcover, W.W. Norton

by Nathaniel Philbrick

Through the stories of twelve clocks, historian and lifelong clock enthusiast David Rooney takes us from the unveiling of al-Jazari’s castle clock in 1206, in present-day Turkey; to the Cape of Good Hope observatory at the southern tip of Africa, where nineteenth-century British government astronomers moved the gears of empire with a time ball and a gun; to the burial of a plutonium clock now sealed beneath a public park in Osaka, where it will keep time for 5,000 years. Rooney shows, through these artifacts, how time has been imagined, politicized, and weaponized over the centuries—and how it might bring peace.

available in September, hardcover, Viking

Philbrick paints a picture of eighteenth century America as divided and fraught as it is today, and he comes to understand how Washington compelled, enticed, stood up to, and listened to the many different people he met along the way—and how his all-consuming belief in the Union helped to forge a nation.

The Race to Decode the Rosetta Stone by Edward Dolnick

available in October, hardcover, Scribner

The discovery and decoding of the Rosetta Stone inscriptions was a monumental event in the history of archeology, as it enabled scholars to read Egyptian hieroglyphics illegible for some 1400 years. Far from dry history, Dolnick’s new chronicle of the event is utterly captivating; the players in the linguistic drama come to vivid life with their expertise and passions, as do the original writers of the texts living 4000 years ago. –Eric

Not “A Nation of Immigrants”: Settler Colonialism, White Supremacy, and a History of Erasure and Exclusion by Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz

"A compelling counter-narrative to America's autobiography as the making of a 'nation of immigrants.' Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz not only chips away at this settler account but also provides the narrative glue for an emancipatory movement beyond the settler-native dichotomy." --Mahmood Mamdani, author of Neither Settler nor Native: The Making and Unmaking of Permanent Minorities

For the past four years, Margaret Renkl’s columns have offered readers of the New York Times a weekly dose of natural beauty, human decency, and persistent hope from her home in Nashville. Now more than sixty of those pieces have been brought together in this sparkling new collection. From the author of the bestselling TODAY Show book club pick Late Migrations: A Natural History of Love and Loss.

In 2012, Dr. Karen King announced that she’d found an ancient scrap of papyrus in which Jesus calls Mary Magdalene “my wife.” It threatened not just the priesthood, but centuries of sacred teachings on marriage, sex, and women’s leadership. “It’s a story about journalism done right, about Sabar’s own capable, dogged sleuthing to get to the bottom of those famous headlines. . . . Veritas offers a vital lesson less about Christianity than about what happens when a scholar decides that the story is more important than the truth.” —Time Magazine

True Stories Windswept : Walking the

Amazing Women Poet Warrior : A Memoir

Paths of Trailblazing Women

by Joy Harjo

available in September, hardcover, Tin House

Harjo, the first Native American to serve as U.S. poet laureate, invites us to travel along the heartaches, losses, and humble realizations of her "poet-warrior" road. She celebrates the influences that shaped her poetry, among them Audre Lorde, N. Scott Momaday, Walt Whitman, Muscogee stomp dance call-and-response, Navajo horse songs, rain, and sunrise. In absorbing, incantatory prose, Harjo grieves at the loss of her mother, reckons with the theft of her ancestral homeland, and sheds light on the rituals that nourish her as an artist, mother, wife, and community member.

by Annabel Abbs

In captivating and elegant prose, Abbs follows in the footsteps of women who boldly reclaimed wild landscapes for themselves, including Georgia O’Keeffe in the empty plains of Texas and New Mexico, Nan Shepherd in the mountains of Scotland, Gwen John following the French River Garonne, Daphne du Maurier along the River Rhône, and Simone de Beauvoir—who walked as much as twenty-five miles a day in a dress and espadrilles—through the mountains and forests of France. Part historical inquiry and part memoir, the stories of these writers and artists are laced together by moments in Abbs’ own life.

The Woman They Could Not Silence : One Woman, Her Incredible Fight for Freedom, and the Men Who Tried to Make Her Disappear

by Kate Moore

A perfectly sane woman in 1860s Illinois is committed to an asylum by her husband because her intellect and original ideas are getting in his way. Little did he know that she would be unrelenting in her campaign for freedom and for women’s rights everywhere. A truly eye-opening read! –Claire

Agatha Christie : First Lady of Crime

edited by H.R.F. Keating available now, hardcover, Pegasus Books

Agatha Christie was not only the most successful author of detective stories the world has ever known, she was also a mystery in herself, giving only the rarest interviews—declining absolutely to become any sort of public figure. Distinguished crime novelist H.R.F. Keating brings together a dozen noted writers from both sides of the Atlantic to throw light on the ever-intriguing Dame Agatha. The myriad of critical angles explored here are penetrating, affectionate, enthusiastic, analytical, and even funny. Together, they give an almost unique insight into the life and work of the First Lady of Crime.

All In : An Autobiography by Billie Jean King

Toufah : The Woman Who Inspired an African #MeToo Movement by Toufah Jallow

available in October, paperback, Truth to Power

Toufah Jallow, a promising student dreaming of a scholarship, became the first woman in The Gambia to make a public accusation of rape against Yahya Jammeh, the dictator who had ruled The Gambia all of Toufah’s life, sparking marches of support and a social media outpouring of shared stories among West African women under #IAmToufah.

available now, hardcover, Knopf

Billie Jean recounts her groundbreaking tennis career—six years as the top-ranked woman in the world, twenty Wimbledon championships, 39 grand-slam titles, and her watershed defeat of Bobby Riggs in the famous “Battle of the Sexes.” She poignantly recalls the cultural backdrop of those years and the profound impact on her worldview from the women’s movement, the assassinations and anti-war protests of the 1960s, the civil rights movement, and, eventually, the LGBTQ+ rights movement.

Life Journeys Bourdain : The Definitive Oral Biography

Beautiful Country : A Memoir

In Chinese, the word for America, mei guo, translates directly to “beautiful country.” Yet when seven-year-old Qian arrives in New York City in 1994 full of curiosity, she is overwhelmed by crushing fear and scarcity. In China, Qian’s parents were professors; in America, her family is “illegal” and it will require all the determination and small joys they can muster to survive.

by Laurie Woolever

Now, for the first time, we have been granted a look into Bourdain’s life through the stories and recollections of his closest friends and colleagues. Laurie Woolever, Bourdain’s longtime assistant and confidante, interviewed nearly 100 of the people who shared Tony’s orbit—from members of his kitchen crews to his writing, publishing, and television partners, to his daughter and his closest friends—in order to piece together a remarkably full, vivid, and nuanced vision of Tony’s life and work.

I Hope This Finds You Well : Poems

by Kate Baer

available in November, paperback, Harper Perennial

Like countless other writers—particularly women—with profiles on the internet, as Kate’s online presence grew, so did the darker messages crowding her inbox. These missives from strangers have ranged from “advice” and opinions to outright harassment. At first, these messages resulted in an immediate delete and block. Until, on a whim, Kate decided to transform the cruelty into art, using it to create fresh and intriguing poems. These pieces, along with ones made from notes of gratitude and love, as well as from the words of public figures, have become some of her most beloved work. I Hope This Finds You Well is drawn from those works: a book of poetry birthed in the darkness of the internet that offers light and hope. By cleverly building on the harsh negativity and hate women often receive—and combining it with heartwarming messages of support, gratitude, and connection, Kate Baer offers us a lesson in empowerment, showing how we too can turn bitterness into beauty

A Carnival of Snackery :

Diaries 2003-2020 by David Sedaris

Humor

available in October, hardcover, Little, Brown

If it’s navel-gazing you’re after, you’ve come to the wrong place; ditto treacly self-examination. The entries here reflect an ever-changing background—new administrations, new restrictions on speech and conduct. At its best, A Carnival of Snackery is a sort of sampler: the bitter and the sweet. There’s no right way to keep a diary, but if there’s an entertaining way, David Sedaris seems to have mastered it.

Beware, danger lurks around every cobblestone corner!

Similarly, nested inside great loss are smaller losses. By manipulating this geometry, Frame shows us, we may be able to redirect our thinking in ways that help reduce our pain.

Jungle : How Tropical Forests Shaped the World— And Us

by Patrick Roberts

available in September, hardcover, Basic Books

To many of us, tropical forests are the domain of movies and novels. These dense, primordial wildernesses are beautiful to picture, but irrelevant to our lives. Jungle tells a different story. Archaeologist Patrick Roberts argues that tropical forests have shaped nearly every aspect of life on earth. They made the planet habitable, enabled the rise of dinosaurs and mammals, and spread flowering plants around the globe. Humanity's fate is tied to the fate of tropical forests, and by understanding how earlier societies managed these habitats, we can learn to live more sustainably and equitably today.

Hailed upon its original publication in India as “a love song to plants and trees,” How I Became a Tree blends literary history, theology, philosophy, botany, and more, and ultimately prompts readers to slow down and to imagine a reenchanted world in which humans live more like trees.

Sisters of the Snake

The Witch King

by Sarena and Sasha Nanua

by H.E. Edgmon

available now, hardcover, HarperTeen

available now, hardcover, Inkyard Press

The Witch King is the best fantasy book I’ve read in a while. Wyatt Croft is a trans witch hiding in the human world from his arranged marriage with Prince Emyr North of the fae kingdom Asalin. Revolution and self-discovery quickly follow Wyatt as Emyr drags him back into the fae world. I loved the diversity and unique story, but my favorite part of this book was the characters. Wyatt’s hilarious, relatable, and mildly concerning inner monologue drives the story forward and leaves the reader wanting more. –Isabel F. age 17

The River Has Teeth

How Moon Fuentez Fell in Love with the Universe

by Erica Waters

available now, hardcover, HarperTeen

This book is an undeniable masterpiece. Della and Natasha are both lost in their search for something they have lost, and in their efforts, they manage to find each other. Typically, a book that features multiple perspectives is hard to fully engage in, but Waters has done an incredible job with capturing the very essence of these girls and baring their stories to the reader. A harsh yet compelling tale, The River Has Teeth is filled with heart and a feminist passion that keeps this genre fresh. –Claire V. age 17

Act Cool by Tobly McSmith is an authentic story about a transgender boy finding his truth and following his dreams in New York City. August gets the chance of a lifetime when he gets a spot at a prestigious performing arts school in New York. The problem is, August has promised his conservative parents he won’t transition while away. I really enjoyed seeing August explore what roles he wants to play both on stage, and in his life. This book also brought up the issues of transgender representation in theater, which I think needs to be talked about more. – Sarah K. age 19
