Golf Course Update A Note from the superintendent I can’t believe it’s already August! Over the next few weeks, we will begin to seed and aerify some of the voids in the fairways. I know that some of these fairway spots are unsightly, but we are replacing the undesirable grass species with Bentgrass. As many of you have noticed, the fairways are firmer and faster this year. The Bentgrass doesn’t require the constant watering and stands up to the heat and stress of the summer as the Poa can’t handle it without constant care and attention. Below are pictures of #2 fairway taken 1 year apart. On the right you can see large burned out areas of poa. We aerified and seeded them with bent grass and this year the areas have held up with little to no stress.

The tees, approaches and greens have all filled in since last year as well. We still have a few small voids in these areas, but they will disappear completely with a few more aerifications and topdressing. We are forgoing the August 12 aerification of the Greens this year. We will instead wait until later in the season when we can perform a more aggressive aerification and verticutting. These processes are vital for the health of the green. The aerification allow us to remove organic matter from the greens and replace it with fresh clean sand. The verticutting removes the older larger blades of grass and thatch build up. Together these processes provide lots of opportunity to grow some new bent grass, improve drainage, and also to improve the playability and texture of the greens. 5

Golf Course Update A Note from the superintendent The pictures below are from #5 green. It’s a comparison from how the greens looked last year at this time and how they look today.

The golf course has come a long way in the last year. We still have lots to improve upon and will be working diligently to improve the conditions here at VCSP. I hope to see you all out here enjoying the course soon. If you ever have a question or concern, please feel free to stop me or send an email to golfcourse@villageclub.org Ethan Johnson Superintendent 6
