Lighting the Way for Kids and Families Since 1891

From The Village President/CEO of The Village’s array of services. We are extremely proud of the incredible work First Step does with respect to addiction issues and we’re similarly proud that this very important service in our region is now a part of our “family” of services. —We were successful in 2012 in obtaining funds to help the folks in Minot cope with the emotional aftereffects of the 2011 flooding.

Dear Friend, Each year when I sit down to compose this letter and reflect on the events of the past year, they all seem remarkable in their own way, but for vastly different reasons. As we continue to maneuver through some very turbulent times, a few things stand out: —2012 represented the first full year that First Step Recovery was part

—Once again, the number of people benefitting from one or more of our services has remained at “all time high levels.” The pride I continue to have in the capability, dedication, and professionalism that our staff represent day in and day out has never been higher. Finally, so much of our success is a direct result of the belief and confidence that donors continue to have in our work. This year more donors than ever have stepped to the plate in support of our programs with donations ranging from a few dollars

to tens of thousands. This, to us, represents the “Good Housekeeping” seal of approval that is second to none. Both our Village Board of Directors and our Foundation Board of Directors took steps in late 2012 to ensure that we will have adequate resources in the generations ahead to meet the demands placed on us just as we have so proudly since 1891. We’ll be visiting more about this in the months and years ahead. Thank you all for your continued support.

The mission of The Village Family Service Center is to improve the quality of life through services designed to strengthen individuals, families and organizations.

From The Village Board Chair children and families, and managing an organization this diverse is a challenge. We are fortunate that The Village has a very dedicated and talented group of associates to support its mission and meet this challenge. Couple our dedicated and talented associates with an executive leadership team that is second to none—and you have one of the best managed organizations in the nonprofit world. We, on the Board, are continuously reminded just how fortunate The Village is to have this caliber of associates and executive leadership. Greetings, My six years on The Village Board of Directors has convinced me that The Village Family Service Center is easily one of the best managed nonprofits in the country. The Village provides a vast and diversified list of services to

It has been a privilege and an honor to serve an organization that contributes so much to so many. In 2012 we served over 80,000 children and families in communities across both Minnesota and North Dakota. Helping others is what The Village does and does well.

Thank you all of you who have made The Village what it is today – The Village associates, all the donors and supporters, and the Board of Directors. In order to provide the continued services in your communities we need the continued help and support of everyone to ensure that The Village Family Service Center is here not only today, but into the future.

Lighting the Way Much of what we do at The Village is help people recognize the strengths that will light their way to a stronger, healthier future. Read here about four people who have made connections through The Village that have changed their lives.

Jake Carrie Holland, Big Brothers Big Sisters caseworker, introduced Jake to his Big Brother in January 2005. Jake was 10 years old. That meeting paved the way to a lasting friendship, the opportunity for a full college scholarship, and a commitment by Jake to lighting the way for the people around him. In his application for an Annexstad Family Foundation scholarship (a scholarship program available to participants in the Big Brothers Big Sisters Program), Jake wrote: “The challenges I have faced throughout my life have been overcome with the help of my Big Brother, Kris Benson. My Big Brother was there for me in times of challenges and will continue to be there for me throughout my life. If I earn a college degree, I would be able to obtain a well-paying job that will help me start and support a family. I would also be able to support my mother through financial difficulties. The benefits of a college degree are remarkable and the knowledge I will receive from college can be passed down to my children to help them succeed in the future.

Rian and Ariana Pam Machtel, Nokomis Child Care Centers Preschool Teacher, came into Rian and Ariana’s life when they started at Nokomis as three-year-old twins. She lit the way for Rian and Ariana to develop their individual personalities and to be successful in school. Here are some of Pam’s reflections, along with reflections of Rian and Ariana’s grandmother.

“I found Nokomis for Rian and Ariana when their mother moved here with them after going through a divorce. Nokomis offered scholarships so she could afford to go back to work. Rian and Ariana are now in 7th grade and both on the A honor roll. They are very outgoing and have lots of friends. Rian is on the speech team and Ariana likes participating in Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD). I know deep in my heart that Nokomis played a big role in getting Rian and Ariana to where they are today. I know because I am their grandma.”

“When they started at Nokomis, Rian and Ariana clung to each other and played mostly together. As the months went by they learned they could be separate and play with other kids too. It was really fun to watch their individual personalities come out, yet see how much they were still there for each other if one of them needed comforting. “

Adam

Mallary Anderson, in-home therapist, worked with Adam’s family when he was at risk of being removed from the home. She lit the way for Adam’s parents to see a different way of parenting, and the importance of making a commitment to their children. Adam’s dad wrote, “We haven’t been great parents. We fought too much and didn’t establish a united front for getting our kids properly raised and disciplined. Adam has always struggled with school and has had behavioral issues since before Kindergarten. Mallary opened our eyes to so many different things. She had wonderful ideas and such a caring spirit about her. Mallary came in on Adam’s behalf and his behavior has improved greatly since she stepped in. I just hope Adam knows I’ll always be there to love him and do my best to get him back on track. He truly is a good kid with a huge heart.” —Adam’s dad

2012 Agency Highlights ❚ Thanks to grant funding

from a variety of sources, The Village’s Minot office provided trauma counseling to children and adults who were affected by the 2011 flooding—helping the community work towards its goal of full flood recovery.

❚ In September, 27 people

gathered for The North Dakota Children’s Home Reunion. Former residents of the orphanage came to Fargo to celebrate the history of The Village and its mission of caring for vulnerable children through orphanage care.

❚ The Village provided “Parenting the Love and Logic

Way” workshops free to families in Fargo, Grand Forks, Devils Lake, and Minot. Funding was provided by the North Dakota Department of Human Services through a Substance Abuse Prevention grant.

❚ Ninety-three percent of students showed improved

school attendance after they were involved with the Truancy Intervention Program (TIP), provided by The Village in Clay County, Minnesota schools. TIP is an early intervention program that focuses on increasing academic success and decreasing absences. The program received United Way funding for the first time in 2012 as the community prioritizes the importance of on-time graduation.

❚ The Village began providing services to reduce the

number of foster care placements of Native American children (ages 0-18) in North Dakota. The four project sites for the Family Engagement for Native American Youth project include Fargo, serving Cass County; Bismarck, serving Burleigh and Morton counties; Devils Lake, serving Ramsey and Rolette counties,

8

and Minot, serving Ward and Mountrail counties. These seven participating counties were selected based on Child and Family Service Review Ratings (CFSR) and foster care numbers of Native American children. These counties represent the largest number of children in foster care and most border Native American Indian Reservations. ❚ In its first year as a program of The Village, First Step

Recovery expanded its capacity to provide chemical dependency evaluations; and expanded education and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) to patients in its Partial Hospitalization Program.

❚ Three of the Big Brothers Big Sisters Program’s

“Littles” were awarded full college scholarships through the Annexstad Family Foundation. The Annexstad Family Foundation provides financial support to deserving students who have matured through the Big Brothers Big Sisters Program.

❚ Volunteers from First Lutheran Church designed

and built square foot gardens for Nokomis Child Care Centers. After all the fun of digging, planting, watering, and weeding, the kids were able to enjoy watching fresh, healthy produce grow—and then eat what they grew.

❚ At the end of 2012, The Village Business Institute’s

Employee Assistance Program covered 146,239 lives and served 723 contracting companies. The average utilization of EAP services was 5.29%, with some companies reaching over 40% utilization. New services such as health risk assessments and nutrition counseling were implemented to enhance the counseling, consulting, and training elements of The Village EAP.

❚ Through a partnership with Alerus Financial, The

Village Financial Resource Center implemented an interactive software program for consumers seeking to make positive money management decisions through goal setting and planning.

❚ The Village Family Magazine received a record number

of responses to its annual reader survey, highlighting its enduring approval in the community. The magazine continues its mission, started in 1997, to educate and encourage families to develop and maintain positive, constructive relationships.

❚ 2012 showed a shift in the area of mediation services

provided by The Village Business Institute (VBI). In the past, mediation has focused primarily on resolving conflict between two individuals, but in 2012 VBI saw a growing trend toward group mediation, often requiring the skills of two mediators working together in a group setting.

❚ Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) provided 39 group

activities for BBBS matches through a grant from the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention. The activities are chosen to provide children access to a variety of experiences they may otherwise not have access to—and includes recreation, community involvement/engagement, cultural, or job skills/career related activities.

Supervisor Training, Teambuilding, Time Management, Stress Management, Overcoming Negativity, and Conflict Resolution. ❚ All Nokomis teachers are registered through a new

child care centers system known as “Growing Futures Professional Development Registry.” The system was created by the North Dakota Department of Human Services to provide and track the professional development of North Dakota’s early childhood workforce.

❚ Financial counseling clients gave high customer

satisfaction and success ratings to their counselors. 89% of survey respondents indicated their stress level was reduced after their initial meeting with a Village financial counselor. 97% felt the financial counselor thoroughly discussed their specific situations and offered suggestions.

❚ The average age of pregnant women seeking services

through Pregnancy Counseling in 2012 was 24 years old. The Village provides pregnancy counseling and adoption services through the Adoption Option, a partnership between The Village and Lutheran Social Services of North Dakota.

❚ Village counselors began providing mental health

counseling services to children, and their families, onsite at child care facilities in St. Cloud. Staff also provides consultation to the staff at Gaetz Child Care Centers to enhance their ability to diagnose mental health issues in children at the center.

❚ The St. Cloud office saw a dramatic increase in the

number of children under the age of seven receiving counseling services.

❚ The Village Business Institute (VBI) staff facilitated

over 300 hours of training for both Village EAP and non-EAP clients. The top ten most requested training topics were Harassment, Drug-free Workplace, Navigating Change, Dealing with Difficult Customers,

I’ve told Gary and Janet several times, ‘If I ever call you and say pick me up at the airport, don’t ask me why. Remembering Helen Helen Rosley changed people’s lives at The Village—the lives of the people who worked here. At the time of her death in December 2012, Helen had been with The Village for 30 years. She started working at The Village after she retired from her job at Northern Abstract and Cass County Abstract—and at age 91 had no intention of leaving. Helen worked in The Village mailroom and sweetened all of our lives with her cake, fudge, beautiful smile, and kind heart. We lost a dear member of The Village family when Helen died, and she will be greatly missed.

“We enthusiastically support the mission of The Village. They are good folks doing good works for a lot of people in our communities. We were always aware of The Village but until being engaged in a study project for them, did not fully grasp the scope of their activities. This project led to volunteering to serve on the foundation board for nearly twenty years. Our support will continue into the future.” —David and Marilyn Kerssen 17
