Maintaining a Healthy Heart
Have you checked in with your heart lately? No, not just emotionally, but physically? Do you feel that you are functioning at your optimal capacity? Could you improve how you take care of and maintain your heart? Maintaining a healthy heart can drastically reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke, heart attacks, and other serious health issues. A healthy heart is also essential in living a full and active lifestyle. There are many actions you can take to keep yourself and your heart happy such as eating a healthy diet, managing stress, getting enough sleep, and exercise.
In the gym, how do you know if you are doing the right exercises, correct number of reps, or sufficient amount of cardio to improve your cardiovascular system? The reality is, any exercise is good for your heart, but here are a few tips, tricks, and class formats best suited for keeping your heart happy and healthy.
Track that Heart Rate!
Tracking your heart rate (HR) ensures you are working at the right intensity for your fitness level and specific goals. Trackers measure the intensity or your aerobic metabolism to break down glycogen and fat for fuel. It really can change the game for many people who are looking to improve their health and fitness level.
When your HR is too low, you may not be pushing yourself hard enough to achieve the desired results. Conversely, a HR that is too high, particularly for long periods of time, might warrant moving to a lower intensity and more optimal fat burning for a beginner or someone aiming for weight loss. However, if the goal is improving sprint times, a higher heart rate zone might be just right.
How Can I Track My Heart Rate?
Many gadgets can track your HR like an Apple watch, Fitbit, or MyZone. Even with one of these gadgets, how do you know what to look for and what to track? Let’s take MyZone for example:
Myzone utilizes five zones to represent a percentage of your Maximum Heart Rate (MHR). This is calculated specifically to you and your body.
The grey, blue, and green zones are best suited for warming up, low intensity movements, meditation, flow exercises, strength and conditioning work, and cool downs. These zones are vital to determining your heart’s ability to recover during more intense workouts.
The red and yellow zones come into play with high intensity physical activity and cardio workouts. Whether you’re running, performing plyometric movements, taking a spin class or interval training, pushing yourself into these zones will burn more calories and increase your cardiovascular abilities. Using these zones will help guide you through each workout and ensure you are maintaining the correct HR for the exercise you are performing.
What Classes are best suited to maintain a healthy heart?
Now that we know the importance of tracking your HR, what classes can we take to put this to use in the most effective way possible? Here’s a list of classes offered by the Village that are optimal for keeping your heart healthy:
There are so many options and formats to choose from when it comes to maintaining a healthy cardiovascular system! Implementing even one of these classes into your weekly routine coupled with a MyZone tracker will positively impact the health of your heart. As always, the Village instructors and trainers are always available to help guide you or get you started with a tracker and program that best suits your needs.
Remember to treat your heart with kindness and life is healthier at The Village!
SEASONAL SPRING FOODS FOR A HEALTHY BODY
Springtime is here, meaning beautiful weather, lots of sunshine and time outdoors, and nature seems to be showing off with an abundance in bloom. But spring also means that a new harvest of vibrant and delicious fruits and vegetables are in season. Village dietitian, Jamie Miller, has the scoop about what produce we should be filling our baskets with right now for the most tasty and nutritious plates.
Why Eat in Season?
There are so many benefits to keeping the seasons in mind while shopping for your fresh produce. First, foods that are in season are much more affordable. When farmers are harvesting a large abundance of produce due to the crop being in season, the cost of the produce will go down. If people feel that healthy eating is causing their grocery bill to climb, they probably are not buying seasonal produce.
Second, fresh foods that are in season are also packed with the highest amount of nutritional value since they are consumed closer to their harvest time. Some antioxidants such as vitamin c, folate, and carotenes decrease when produce is stored for periods of time, such as with non-seasonal fruits and vegetables.
By eating seasonally, we also can support more local farming which means less transportation, less refrigeration, less hot houses, and less irradiation of produce. It’s a helpful way to be mindful of the environment. And lastly, but most importantly, in-season produce just tastes the best! This is because seasonal fruits and vegetables have been able to naturally ripened and harvested at the correct time. Out of season produce must be transported long distances, chilled to preserve, then artificially ripened in heat. All of these measures change the taste and texture of the fruit. But when you eat a fresh peach in the summer months or an orange in the winter, its flavor is unmatched!
What’s in Season for Spring?
Inspired to fill your kitchen with some seasonal produce this spring? Stock up on some of these fruits and vegetables, then try out a new delicious and nourishing recipe!

FOR THE CRISP TOPPING
• 3/4 cup rolled or quick-cooking oats

Mix with two forks or a pastry blender until well combined. If after a few minutes your mixture is still a bit dry, you can add a little bit more coconut oil OR syrup. PILATES SPOTLIGHT
So, you want to practice Pilates: Do you choose Mat work or Reformer?
By Joan Kramer - Gainey Pilates InstructorThe Pilates Method, in general, is beneficial for multiple reasons and for practically every population. Do you suffer from chronic pain, poor flexibility, or nagging injury? Are you bored with your current exercise regime, stressed out, or have low energy? Both Pilates Mat work and Pilates Reformer honor the basic Principles of Pilates and improve your quality of life! You find renewed motivation and increased confidence through mindful exercises designed to relieve pain and foster a subconscious sense of well-being
Here is a brief description of the 10 Basic Pilates Principals.
1. Awareness and mindfulness
2. Balance - physical, mental, emotional
3. Breathe correctly
4. Concentration
5. Centering - physically and emotionally
6. Control of movement
7. The efficiency of movement
8. The flow of movement
9. The precision of movement
10. Harmony
Here are some differences between Pilates Mat work and Pilates Reformer:
Pilates Mat work requires little, if any, actual equipment! In fact, you can practice Mat work on a towel at the beach. In a more formal setting, you use an exercise mat. Some Pilates Mat exercises can involve small props including a fitness ring or Magic Circle, light dumbbells, and small balls. Additional accessories could include a foam roller, bands, or the BOSU. Mainly, gravity and your own body weight act as your “equipment”. Most students feel a need for relatively good physical condition prior to beginning a Pilates Mat regime. Often, you can find Mat Pilates offered in a group class setting which adds an element of fun camaraderie to your exercise session. Instructors of Mat Pilates sometimes acquire minimal training and occasionally have only slight knowledge of the Pilates Principals, but most teachers usually strive to conduct safe, effective experiences.
Pilates Reformer requires very specific Pilates equipment, especially the Pilates Reformer. Other pieces of Pilates equipment, or apparatus, include the Cadillac, Chair, Ladder Barrel, and more. Usually, equipment-based Pilates exercise happens in a Pilates Studio. Your Pilates Reformer session could include the Reformer, or all the apparatus, as well as gravity and your own body weight. Students of almost any physical condition may begin these lessons. Practicing Pilates with a Reformer ideally involves private lessons first, with small group sessions eventually, if you develop good skills. This allows you to achieve increased fitness at your own pace according to your own goals. Exercises performed on Pilates equipment require specific instruction by a teacher with extensive training in the Pilates Method and focus on the Pilates Principals.
How do you decide where to begin your Pilates adventure?
The experiences of two actual students may help:
Sasha feels relatively fit. They have no major mobility issues but would like to increase their core strength and flexibility. They want to improve their tennis game with sharpened coordination and enhanced stamina. Group activities provide additional socialization for them since they often work from home. The Pilates Mat work experience safely provides these goals for Sasha!
Chris usually tries to stay active. Recently though, they feel frequent pain due to a back injury. Chris would like to resume their former level of exertion but needs guidance on a safe, effective routine to strengthen their core, promoting healing and preventing further injury. They also want to improve their golf performance. Private lessons allow them to focus and give attention to their specific goals. The Pilates Reformer sessions absolutely provide this experience for Chris!
All people can benefit from Pilates: Patients rehabilitating from recent surgery or injury as well as Navy Seals returning from a mission. If your goal involves improving and maintaining a functional quality of life, Pilates is for you. If you are an athlete striving to improve your performance and create life balance, Pilates is for you. Enjoy your journey!

Six Uncommon Spa Treatments That You May Not Have Tried
By Kirk Gregor - Gainey Spa DirectorWe all have our go-to treatments at the spa that help us to stay feeling our best. Many uncommon spa treatments are also available, and they can leave you with amazing results. Many treatments can also be upgraded to include more services and added value that you might often pass up. Check out this list of six spa treatment you may not have tried before and learn how they can benefit your wellness routine.
Body Treatment
While massage continues to reign as the number one treatment at most spas, clients seldom opt to experience the benefits of a full body treatment. Our seasonal scrubs include full body exfoliation and a heated wrap and body masque that both relaxes and detoxifies. The treatment is completed with a hydrating application of a shea butter lotion to seal in moisture. These treatments are great on their own or in combination with a massage or facial, or try one of our new Village Journeys that incorporate specific massage techniques, aromatherapy and scrub all into one 90 treatment.
Luxury Pedicure
Our most popular pedicure is generally our most basic. While massage, callous removal, file, buff and polish are a great way to maintain feet, the Yon-ka Luxury version offers a more comprehensive service that includes the technology of advanced facial quality products. A gentle gommage scrub and glycolic peel exfoliates and softens feet. The purest aromatherapy oils are incorporated into effective hydrating lotion used for enhanced pressure point foot massage. For those with dry, calloused feet, this is gentle way to achieve great results.
Acupuncture
A lot of people avoid getting acupuncture because it’s different. It involves needles, energetic channels, and a whole different way of looking at the body. However, acupuncture has gained in popularity over recent years because people have discovered that acupuncture gives them a new way to approach whole body wellness and they are pleasantly surprised to discover how great they feel after acupuncture treatments and how many ailments it addresses in a safe, pain-free way.
Gentlemen’s Facial Special
Though more male clients are booking facial treatments, many seem to be hesitant to seek treatments that may have longer term benefits. Our Gentlemen’s Special features hot steamed towels and an enhanced exfoliation through the use of Microdermabrasion which helps provide both a deep pore cleansing and addresses ingrown hairs. A cooling, hydrating mask to address fine lines and wrinkles is followed by a sunscreen application. We even include a brow “clean-up” that removes stray hairs and enhances the overall, natural appearance of the brow.
Hydralessence Facial
For many years, clients consistently requested simple European facials. Now, we most commonly book dermaplane facials for exfoliation combined with a peel and masque. Our new Hydralessence facial is not only our most luxurious, but is ultra-hydrating for our desert climate. We now often balance facial care with more invasive treatments performed at med-spas. This facial is the perfect ally for traumatized skin from lasers, peels or sun exposure. The tightening modeling mask enriched with seaweed and fruit extracts is a truly unique experience.
Gloss Enhancement to Hair
Our guests will often get a shampoo and blowout styling following their spa treatment. Enhancing that treatment with a deep conditioning scalp treatment with gloss not only adds more relaxation time, but also leaves hair with a healthy shine. The product can include color to tone your current shade and is a great way to add to a simple cut.

TENNIS SPOTLIGHT Greg Prudhomme,
Top 10 Tips to Improve Your Tennis Game
Tennis is truly the ‘sport for a lifetime’. Not only is tennis extremely fun, but it provides many social, mental, and physical benefits. The sport promotes healthful exercise, tactical thinking, challenge, and spending time with friends and family. Another element that adds to the enjoyment of tennis is improving your game. When most people think of improving their tennis game, they often simply think of improving their technique. Although better technique is helpful in playing good tennis, there are numerous other ways to make improvements. Read below for 10 tips that can make you a better tennis player and add more fun on the tennis court:
1. Tennis Lessons: Athleticism, emulating other good tennis players, and repetition can certainly help improve your game, but lessons from a tennis teaching professional will help with learning the important fundamentals of tennis that include technique, tactics, strategy, mental skills, positioning, and more. You can find an experienced tennis pro at the Villages!
2. Technique: You will learn from reading this list that there are many areas in which you can improve your tennis game beyond tennis technique, but the technique is still very important. Getting technical instruction from a tennis professional can help ensure that you are using a fundamentally sound technique for all your tennis strokes. Learning the proper technique will help prevent injury, improve accuracy, increase consistency, add spin, and increase power. Adding these elements to your strokes adds to the fun of the game!
3. Percentage Tennis: In addition to tennis technique, there are rules of tennis tactics based on physics, geometry, and data that are very important to know and integrate into your tennis play. Following these rules will reduce unforced errors and help play more purposefully. Some basic percentage tennis principles include using good net clearance, aiming shots far from the lines, and hitting cross court more often than down the line. Be sure to pay close attention when your coaches are discussing percentage tennis and shot selection in your lessons and clinics. Knowing when to hit is a crucial aspect of good tennis.
4. Court Positioning: A tennis player with average strokes in good positioning can beat a player with good strokes in average positioning. If you’ve ever felt like the better player, but still lost, it could be because your court positioning is working against you. Be sure to serve from the proper position, prepare for ground strokes in the proper position, and volley from the proper position at the net. General rules include serving from near the center of the court in singles while serving from closer to the sidelines in doubles. Prepare for ground strokes a step or two behind the baseline and prepare for volleys approximately halfway between the net and service line. Additionally, there are defensive and offensive positions on the court that a player must know to be well-rounded. Ask your coach to analyze your positioning next time you play.
5. Off-Court Training: If all things are equal between tennis players’ level of play and experience, the player who does more off-court training will win most of the time. There are countless areas in which tennis players can spend time to become better and to help win more often. These include cardiovascular endurance, agility, speed, strength, flexibility, and reactions. Talk to your tennis coach and see a fitness trainer to come up with a customized plan for you.
6. Serve Practice: Rod Laver said, “A tennis player is only as good as his or her second serve.” In other words, someone with a good second serve is a good tennis player and someone with a weak second serve might be a weak tennis player. A second serve must be reliable and not easy to attack by opponents. When this is the case, players can hit their first serve with less pressure, which leads to winning more service points, winning more service games, and then returning serve more relaxed. Serving is one of the strokes we can practice ourselves. Go to the courts 15 minutes early a few times a week and serve a basket of balls. It won’t take long to experience better results.
7. Strategy: In addition to knowing how to play high-percentage tennis, it is also important to know how to adjust your game plan when playing against different styles of opponents. As you know, you could play against the retrieving/lobbing styles, attacking players, or all-court players. There are many subtle tactics and adjustments that can be made to your game plan for different style opponents, but when playing against retrievers/lobbers don’t take the bait. It is important to get into the rally with these types of players as they win their matches due to their opponents’ mistakes. If you get into the rally rather than getting trapped into over-hitting, you can experiment with a variety of tactics such as using underspin, bringing them to the net, and hitting short balls...
