"On the porch, Nana began, 'Today, we'll talk about friendship.' Ken asked shyly, 'Nana, is it okay to have a boy as a best friend?' Nana smiled, 'Of course, Ken. Friendship knows no gender.'"
"Ken blushed as her sisters teased her about Joe. 'Nana, why do they tease me?' she asked. 'Teasing is often a sign of affection, dear,' Nana reassured her."
"Nana, raising her lemonade, said, 'It’s important to be kind in friendships.' Sam chimed in, 'Even with boys, Nana?' 'Especially with boys,' Nana replied."
"Whit, intrigued, asked, 'What's the most important part of a friendship, Nana?' Nana replied, 'Respect and understanding, Whit.'"
"'Ken, having Joe as a friend is wonderful,' Nana said. Brooke asked, 'Is it like your friendship with Grandpa Duke?' Nana nodded, 'Exactly, Brooke.'"
"'Your grandfather Duke and I were friends first,' Nana shared. 'Did you like him then?' Ken asked. 'We grew to love each other,' Nana smiled."
"The sisters gasped. 'You mean friendship can turn into love?' Sam asked. 'It can, but it always starts with respect,' Nana explained."
"Nana advised, 'Always treat your friends with kindness.' 'Even when they're different from us?' asked Whit. 'Especially then,' Nana affirmed."
"Whit exclaimed, 'Joe buys Ken ice cream!' Nana
laughed, 'That's a sweet gesture of friendship.'"
"The sisters hugged Ken. 'See, we all care about you,' said Sam. 'Friendship is about caring,' Nana added."
"Nana watched with pride. 'You've all learned a valuable lesson today,' she said."
