Ms. Betty and Chef Lou greeted the studentsas they arrived at Brite Star School. The students loved Chef Lou. They had learned a lot about nutrition the last time he visited theclass.

“Why is Chef Lou here?” Miles wondered. “Todayis French Fry Friday—my favorite day!” “I don’t know why he’s here,” said Alexander. “But, what I do know is that I’m hungry for french fries!” Everyone laughed! “French fries later,” Chef Lou said. “FirstMs. Betty is going to give you your assignments for the weekend.”

“Alright class, now you remember when Chef Lou told you about the Food Pyramid that showed you healthy foods, right?” Ms. Bettyasked. The students nodded. “Jimmy, please pass out thesepapers for me. Students, when you get your paper, write Shopping List at the top of the page.”

“Let’s review what we learned about the food groups from the Food Pyramid,” ChefLou said.

“1. Grains 2.Fruits 3.Vegetables 4.Milk andDairy 5.Meat, Fish and Eggs Now, the fun part starts,” he said. The class couldn’t wait tosee what was next.

“Thank you, Chef Lou,” Ms. Betty said as heheaded back to thekitchen. “See you for fries later!” Miles shouted. Everyone laughed. “Your assignment is to go to the Brite Star Supermarket withyour parents and purchase an item from each food group for Show and Tell on Monday,” Ms. Betty explained. Everyone loved the Supermarket and Manager John. But the kids’ favorite spot was the Candy Store near the checkout!

“Now, work on your shopping lists. Remember to include one food fromeach group,” Ms. Betty said. Miles wrote something and Alexander started giggling. “Miles wrote‘Candy and more candy’ on his list,” Alexander said. “You must list something from every food group,” said Missy. “I know,” Miles sighed. “But that sure would have been a fun list!” “Take your lists home and talk with your parents about this assignment,” Ms. Betty said. “It will be fun to see what you each bring on Monday.”

That night the kids explained the project to their parents. Everyone looked forward to the shopping trip. The parents were glad their kids were learning about nutrition. “I want to come shopping, too,” said Chucky. “I’ll make my list rightnow.”

“I can’t wait to see what he comes up with,” Alexander said.

Saturday morning Brite Star Supermarket was filled families. Some were doing their weekly shopping and some were the students doingtheir assignment. Everyone was friendly andhappy. Manager John greeted every family. Hehad shopping carts ready for eachcustomer.

Alexander and his mother started shopping from his list while Chucky and Dad shopped for Chucky’s list. They agreed to meet at the check out counter. Alexander chose an item from each foodgroup:

Grains – cereal and bread; Fruit – red apple; Vegetable – onion; Milk and dairy – chocolate milk; Meat – turkey “These are all my favorite things,”Alexander said.

“Great!” Mom said. “Now, let’s findDad and Chucky.” “I have a pretty good idea where theyare,” Alexander said.

Just asAlexander expected, Dad and Chucky were sitting at the Candy Store near the checkout. “How did your shopping go?” Dadasked. “Great. I got cereal and chocolate milk for breakfast. Bread, onions and turkey for a sandwich. And, an apple for Ms. Betty,” Alexandersaid. “Great! All very healthy food,”Dad said. “What did Chucky get from his list?” Alexander asked. “He’s eating it,” said Dad. Chucky held a big chocolate bar and chocolate was smeared allover his face!

Monday was fun as the students showed what foods they bought. Chef Lou thought everyone did a great job. “Chucky’s list was close to your original list,” Alexander told Miles. “It was candy and more candy!” Everyone laughed. “Class you all did a great job so we have a surprise foryou,” Ms. Betty said. The door opened and Big Leo came in carrying stacks of pizza. “Yay!” everyone cheered. “This is foryou, Ms. Betty,” Alexander said. He gave her the nice red applehe had bought.

Think AboutIt 1. Which day of the week was every student’s favorite? 2. What are the five food groups from the Food Pyramid? 3. What did Miles put on his shopping list at first?

4. What were some of the foods Alexander bought? 5. What was the surprise for the whole class?

Let’s Work Together! Eating foods from all the Food Groups help you body be healthy. Do youenjoy fruits and vegetables? Are you willing to eat healthy foods?

I will. .. • Try new foods that my parents make for me. • Eat foods from all theFood Groups. • Learn that junk food is a treat, not food for every day. Tell your parents what you’ve learned about the Food Groups. Help them plan ways to include foods from them in your meals each day.
