Hudson was a really great Brite Star kid. He cared about other people. He liked to help people and he tried to always be kind. Hudson treated people the way he liked to be treated.
The sun shined bright through the windows of the CCDay Care Center while Dumaka, Tirza and Nanise played together on the rug. They were busily building a large structure with the wooden blocks while their mothers and their teacher Ms. Kathy huddled in the far corner ofthe room.
Hudson’s family had a very specialneighbor. Everyone called the older man, “Old Man Frank.” He was a nice old man. Old Man Frank had been Hudson’sneighbor for all of Hudson’s life.
When Mr. Frank’s wife died his family gave him a dog to keep him from feeling too lonely. He named the dog Tagalong because the little pup followed Mr. Frank wherever hewent. Mr. Frank didn’t mind Tagalong following him around. He loved the littledog and he enjoyed the company.
One day Hudson heard Mr. Frank tell his mother, “I’m worried about Tagalong. He needs a lot of exercise and I’m too old to give it to him.” “Can I help?” Hudson asked. “I’d love to exercise Tagalong!” he said with enthusiasm. A big smile spread across Mr. Frank’s face. “That would be wonderful. Thank you!” he said. He was very grateful for Hudson’shelp.
From that day on, Hudson helped Mr. Frank by exercising Tagalong. They went forwalks. Hudson tossed balls for Tagalong to fetch. He also cleaned up after thedog. There were some days when Mr. Frank didn’t feel well enough to get out of bed. On those days Hudson fed Tagalong and gave him water.
One day Hudson saw an ambulance in Mr. Frank’s driveway. The poor man hadgotten very sick and had to go to the hospital.
Hudson’s mother brought Tagalong to their house so Hudson could take care of him until Mr. Frank came home.
Hudson loved having Tagalong at hishouse. Tagalong loved Hudson, too. The little dog started following Hudson everywhere he went. He even slept with Hudson. Several weeks passed and Mr. Frank still had not comehome.
One night Hudson came into the kitchen and saw his mom and dad hugging each other and crying. His parents didn’t cry very often so it kind of scared him. “What’s wrong?” he asked. He was a little afraid to hear what they would say.
“Mr. Frank died today,” Hudson’s mother said softly. “Oh no!” Hudson cried. “That’sso sad. Oh, what will happen toTagalong now?” “Well, Mr. Frank’s relatives willprobably take him to live with them,” Hudson’s mother gently explained.

“No! No! No!” Hudson cried. He ran into his bedroom and threw himself onto his bed. Tagalong jumped up beside him andsnuggled close. That night Hudson cried himself to sleep while Tagalong slept besidehim.

The next morning, Hudson was awakenedby the doorbell ringing. He jumped out of bed and ran to his bedroom door. He could hear his mother talking to someone in the living room.

“Granddad wanted us to give Tagalong to your son, if you say it’s okay,” the person said. “Of course it’s okay,” Hudson’s mother said. “We all love Tagalong and my son will be so happy.”

From that day on, Hudson and Tagalongwere best friends. Hudson often told the little dog about Mr. Frank and how much he loved his little dogfriend.

Hudson had happily helped Mr. Frank. He didn’t ask for anything in return. But, as far as Hudson was concerned, the little dogthat followed him everywhere he wentwas reward enough!

Think About It
1. How did Hudson always treat people? 2. Why did Mr. Frank’s family give him a dog to be his pet? 3. Why do you think Hudson volunteered to help withTagalong? 4. How canyou tell that Tagalong lovedHudson? 5. Why do you think Mr. Frank told his family that he wanted Hudson to have Tagalong?
