In my travels people always get excited about my ‘accent’. The way I pronounce ‘girl’ as ‘gyurl’, and so forth. It’s sometimes fun when they try to mimic certain words and phrases. One of the best parts of my culture that I really enjoy is the Vincy ‘proverbs’. Sad to say you don’t hear them used much these days, or maybe it’s just in my neck of the country. My grandmother was famous for them, and she knew so many that none of them would ever be overused. My grandmother never took to people who always wanted to be in her business – those ‘fass, comess’ people. Here are a few of the proverbs she would use in situations like that. Try to use a few in your day to day lives, and let’s hold on to this fun little piece of our culture: 18

5 Best Foods for weight loss By Jeneille Lewis

W

hile most people focus on the importance of exercise when it comes to losing weight, I firmly believe that 80% of a fit body is made in the kitchen. What should you eat to lose weight? How much and how often should you eat it? An eating plan should never be generic, however, there are many different foods that you can eat that will help to speed up your metabolism, flush your body of excess water weight and assist you in reaching your weight loss goals, most of which you need not look any further than your own back yard to find.

1. Aloe vera colon cleanse

2. Coconut Water

Coconut water is rich source of electrolytes which are important for muscular, cardiovascular, nervous system, and immune system function. It will boost your energy and metabolism thus aiding in weight loss. Coconut water also helps to rehydrate and 3. sweet Potato balance fluids within the human body thus Sweet potatoes are a great source making it a great post work-out drink. of dietary fiber, which helps to reduce blood sugar and insulin spikes, ultimately reducing belly fat. I’d suggest substituting a sweet potato for 5. mangoes rice, or bread to save hundreds of calories. Mangoes are a great

This cleans out the colon to get rid of toxic residue will help improve your energy level so that you can get more out of your weight loss plan. You can choose from aloe vera juice or capsules taken daily for several weeks.

4. CINNAMON

Cinnamon has a regulatory effect on blood sugar levels and simultaneously increases insulin levels in the body. It imitates the biological activity of insulin and increases the metabolism of glucose. way to satisfy a sweet tooth and to help to ward off other cravings. Mangoes are high in fiber, magnesium, antioxidants, and iron. Mangoes also aid in digestion.

So, these are my recommendations for weight loss — what would you add to this list? Vincy eZine | Vol1 Issue 3

HEALTHY EATING

Eating Your Way To A

HEALTHY BODY BY SAMARA MURPHY

A couple months ago, my husband, an You’ve probably started contemplating how to get your perfect summer body, like avid Twitter follower, found a tweet that intrigued him. It was a diet with no gluten, my husband and I, especially if you have plans for summer vacations, weddings, animal products, sugar, caffeine or reunions with friends and playing Carnival. alcohol. The person who posted it claimed that the Now, I’ll be the first “ I’ll be the first to admit to anyone that I hate the results to admit gym. And to make that I hate He decided the gym. matters worse, I love to eat.” My exercise is limited to walking my dog to try it. I, of course, took one look at it and decided that there was no way I would and occasionally Zumba on Xbox Kinect. be doing anything that crazy. The only And to make matters worse, I love to eat. I’ve never been a fan of dieting for the people I knew that actively avoided gluten simple reason that I don’t like to restrict – a protein found in wheat and wheat related products, were those with Celiac what I eat. Enter the conundrum – how to lose weight? disease. Wheat is in everything delicious 22

EATING YOUR WAY TO HEALTH and satiating and some things that you never even considered it should be in, like canned beans! There was also that little part about animal products. No MEAT?! And it sunk in - it isn’t just no meat. No seafood, no dairy products. She’s talking about being VEGAN! Not even vegetarian. The thought sent chills through my butterchurning heart. Then there was the issue of no sugar. What happened to sugar being grouped with spice and everything nice? The caffeine, or lack thereof, seemed least threatening to me. I drink coffee on a whim and caffeinated sodas even less. And while the idea did not appeal a lot to me, taking a break from alcohol would probably be a good thing. Sugar-free, caffeine-free, alcohol-free, gluten-free vegan. I finally gave in and decided to give it a try. I emptied the fridge of butter, meat, beer, cake, cheese and all other offenders most grudgingly, and to the supermarket we went. We stocked up on dairy alternatives - almond milk, soy milk; on meat alternatives – soya The Pros (a) A new skinnier you. (b) Healthier eating (more fruits and vegetables) mainly because of the lack of unhealthy options available with the diet. (c) A happy alcohol free liver. (d) More home cooked meals.

chunks, tofu and beans; and anything else we could find to fit the bill – gluten and sugar free cereal, soy yoghurt, potatoes, rice noodles and other random goods, then finally we went to the market and purchased all kinds of fruits and vegetables. Of course, I had to cook these meals without some of my favourite ingredients like butter. I spent a lot of time frustrated by the restrictions. It was a bit like an artist not being able to use any variation of two of the primary colours. My husband seemed to enjoy the food though, and so we went along. I made a lot of Asian influenced dishes like tofu in coconut curry, vegetable stir-fries and rice noodle salads. He declared that he could be gluten-free and vegan forever! We felt that although it was completely unsustainable, the diet was largely a success. We felt healthy, weight was lost and our goal was accomplished. This is what we learned:

The Cons (a) It was difficult and expensive to find gluten-free and vegan foods. (b) Caffeine withdrawal (if you’re an everyday coffee/soda drinker). (c) Meals can get boring unless you have a large repertoire of recipes or you do a lot of recipe research. (d) Eating out becomes near impossible. (e) Not eating all of the good stuff you’ve grown accustomed to tends to make you a little grumpy. (f) Your friends think you’re crazy. It could be because you start getting distracted by visions of steak, bread and ice cream. Vincy eZine | Vol1 Issue 3 23

RECIPES

All of this being said, I don’t think you should do the diet. You’ll be angry and probably at me, especially when you start staring longingly at other people’s plates. You should start with a healthy eating plan with less dietary restrictions. Try the following for a month or two with daily exercise (even if it’s just walking the dog for 30 minutes) and remember that the best key to healthy weight loss is exercising and eating smart. 1. Instead of completely cutting out gluten, try to generally limit the consumption of white bread and pasta, and eat more whole grains. 2. Limit the use of dairy products. 3. Have fresh fruit for breakfast and/or a whole grain cereal with almond or soy milk. 4. Keep the coffee if you must, forget the sugar and milk/cream. Use dairy-free creamer if you get desperate. 5. If you don’t want to be completely vegan, have grilled fish or chicken with lunch and lots of vegetables. 6. Eat a small, early dinner without meat. You can have tofu, soya chunks or beans to make up for the protein. 7. During the day when you feel hungry snack on vegetables, nuts and fruit. 8. Give sugar a holiday. And if absolutely necessary, use honey as a substitute. 9. Drink water as often as possible and add sparkling water or club soda to no sugar added juices such as apple and cranberry for a spritzy treat. 10. Kiss alcohol goodbye. 24

ith 30 minutes to go before the scheduled 6pm start, the skies opened allowing the clouds to dump a torrential shower of rain below – erasing all signs of dryness. If you thought this would stop our normally can’t-get-wet-by-rainwater locals from venturing out, then guess again! Fashion Bliss went full steam ahead on Easter Sunday with patrons fully occupying seats under family reunion sized tents; patiently waiting for the show to begin. This production was presented by the Mijé Modeling and Personal Development & Advertising Agency – an outfit that is well known for hosting fashion shows such as Carnival Catwalk over the years. The runway show commenced with an array of floral dresses (ones you’d expect to see for Spring & Summer) worn by Mijé’s Junior and Teen models. Thereafter began the standard routine that most fashion shows follow: clothing/accessory labels introduced, new and familiar models strutted down the catwalk, and designers escorted down the runway at the end of their collection to rounds of applause; all accompanied by 28

The crowd was impressed with the displays of fashion and the performance of the models – whose make up, hair styling and attitudes were on point. Quick shout out to Anna LaBorde and Brooke Legair who graced the runway; both contestants in the recently concluded Miss SVG 2013 beauty pageant, and members of Mijé. www.vincyezine.com

here’s no piece of jewelry quite as classic as a strand of pearls. Accessorising with a simple white strand can channel an Audrey Hepburn-like chicness or Elizabeth Taylor-style elegance. But in fact, the sophistication associated with wearing pearls started long before Audrey or Elizabeth. Pearls have long been a symbol of wealth and class, starting, as early as the fifth century BC.

To accurately explain the etiquette of pearlwearing, we must understand its history and historical etiquette. Up until the 20th century, pearls were the rarest, highestprized and most sought-after jewel in the world. In fact, pearls were so uncommon that they were typically owned and worn only by aristocracy and the very wealthy upper-class as a symbol of status and importance. Perhaps the most famous historical pearl was the earring Cleopatra dissolved in a glass of wine and drank in order to prove to Marc Antony that she could, in fact, throw the world’s most expensive dinner 34

throughout the bible as a depiction of holiness and eternal worth. Because

of this, it is appropriate to give and wear pearls for occasions such as weddings, funerals, baptisms and communions. The wearer of the pearls shows proper etiquette by reserving the special jewels for such an occasion. www.vincyezine.com

exi Johnny has come Lexi John a long way from ny experimenting on her grandmother’s and other friends’ hair while she was still living in SVG. She was only seven years old when she developed a passion for hairstyling, but while other friends’ career focus changed over the years, hers did not. She drew inspiration from the beautiful colors throughout the Caribbean, Vincy festivities, nature and the colourful clothing worn by locals – which firmly set her as a lover of fashion, hair, culture and art in general.

The likes of Kiyah Wright, Bravo TV Shear Genius winner Brig Van Osten, and the late Vidal Sassoon were only a few of the successful hair stylists and entrepreneurs who inspire Lexi to strive for perfection in her craft, to stay open-minded, hungry for knowledge and to stay true to what she loves. beauty must haves for prom

B E A U T Y

1 Flawless skin Don’t just wait until the big day to start working on your skin – deep clean, moisturise and use sunscreen on a regular basis to ensure that your skin is healthy and glowing in those fabulous prom photos.

I

t’s the season of proms again, and whereas Graduation Day is a big deal for the family, prom is certainly the main attraction for the graduate. Here are a few beauty must haves for prom.

2 Natural brows

You want to go all out for your big night, don’t you? Well, when it comes to your eyebrow less is more. KEEP IT NATURAL! Try not to over pluck, shave, or wax. Sadly, even the professionals tend to go a bit overboard, so the first words to whoever is taking care of your brows should be “KEEP IT NATURAL!” Don’t be afraid to ask to have a look in that mirror during the process rather than waiting until the work is done because the hardest thing to remedy is brows gone wrong.

3 Defined eyelashes A couple coats of flake free, lash defining mascara really does go a long way in bringing your eyes to life, and can make as much of a statement as a pair of dramatic falsies.

4 Smudge free lips

With all the talking, laughing, sipping, and eating that await you, you want to ensure that whatever lip products you choose are super pigmented and have ultra staying power. There is no better way to guarantee this than using lip liner. Lipsticks have their time and place but on a night like this, the last thing you want to be doing is running to the restroom every 15 minutes to do a touch up. Filling in your lips with a liner then topping with just a hint of gloss is a sure fire way to guarantee less touch ups and more partying.

5 Blotting paper

Simple paper towels will also suffice. There’s nothing worse than scrolling through photos from an important event, only to notice that your face looks like a giant grease ball. A simple way to prevent this is to blot before you take those photos. All in all, remember less is more because when it comes to prom, you want to spend as little time in the mirror and as much time on the dance floor!

SUMMER & BEAUTY

B E A U T Y

Put Your Best Face Forward! Ditch the heavy foundations and powders - they will only melt off your face. Stick with tinted moisturizers or BB creams. This will even out your complexion and help you to maintain a flawless and natural look. If you do, however, need a bit more coverage and insist on keeping your current foundation routine, invest in a setting spray from brands like Skindinavia that make your makeup budge proof and flawless! Take Your Skincare Up a Notch! Pay very special attention to your skincare routine as the weather warms up. Now would be a great time to use a moisturizer with a higher sun protection factor (think SPF 50 and above) to prevent signs of premature ageing. For the days when you are in the sun for quite a while, consider adding aloe vera gel to your routine to help soothe the skin after. We are huge fans of the Top Care Moisturizing Aloe Vera Gel, but using the raw aloe vera would have the same or even better results. Tantalize the Senses! With summer right around the corner, it’s time to undergo a scent makeover. Treat your perfume the way you’d treat your wardrobe – change it up with the seasons. Since warmer weather can change your skin chemistry, some of the scents that you may have enjoyed during the cooler months may be a bit overpowering once the weather heats up. Try summery scents like Stella McCartney’s Summer, Jo Malone’s Lemon Tart and See by Chloé And Most Importantly…Take Care of You! Take care of your body. Apart from what we put on the outside, we need to pay close attention to how we treat our insides. Eat healthier, exercise, cut down on alcohol and sodas, and drink lots of water. Take time out of your busy schedule to kick back and enjoy time alone or your loved ones. Read; turn off the television and the radio and the computer. Put away the cell phones. Go for a walk or a run. Meditate. Appreciate your body. And remember that you can only reflect on the outside what’s been inside all along. www.vincyezine.com

D-SQUARE SHOW

F A S H / E N T

A Fashion Show of Epic Proportions! Soca isn’t the only thing that will be dominating Carnival this year. Fashion will arrive in SVG on a scale never seen here before when D-Square Fashion Show takes over the city of Kingstown. Heritage Square will be transformed into ‘fashion city’, as Tivoli & Fiache Styles (out of Montreal) promise to wow their audience on June 21, 2013. Designs from eight of SVG’s top designers and Kingsley Thorne, from Barbados, will also be on display. Designs and other fashion items will go on sale from 5pm, before the main runway event begins at 7pm. This show is ALL-INCLUSIVE, which includes free drinks and food at the event and entry to the after-party at SOV Night Club. Patrons can also opt to purchase a non-inclusive ticket. Organizer Tivoli & Fiache Styles promises an evening of high fashion and excitement. This ‘red carpet’ affair is meant to introduce a fashion element to the Carnival season, allowing visitors to get a taste of what the local and regional fashion industry has to offer. By partnering with several local designers, the show will allow persons to gain an appreciation for local talent and whet their appetite for international popular styles. Vincy Mas 2013

Sunny with a very good chance of having an EPIC time BY PETA ODINI

S

o the season has kicked off, the music has been flowing at a fantastic pace and the flood gates are definitely going to burst open within the next few days. And let me just say that I have never been more excited for carnival! I have a theory about Vincy Mas... my friends have probably heard this one so many times that if they’re reading this they’re prolly thinking “Here we go again”, but tough! My Vincy Mas’ theory is simply that the ‘major hypeness’ occurs every other year. Like one year everything will be just bananas and then the next year will be a lil laid back, followed by a season of total madness. From personal experience, 2009 was WILD! Musically, the fetes and the experience in 2011 were BEYOND. My friends and I dubbed that the ‘Wayward Summer’ because it was just endless vibes! Like inexplicable madness and good times were had all season long. That Carnival Tuesday jump was one of the best I ever experienced. I think that was the longest I ever stayed in a Carnival band, and it was 64

Vincy eZine | Vol1 Issue 3

definitely the most laps I ever made around Kingstown! 2012 was good but it wasn’t EPIC; which brings us to 2013... By my calculations, it is going to be WILD! And the music thus far seems to be supporting my theory. Early out the gates, I was extremely impressed with Icon! He has released a WIDE array of music, one of my faves being ‘When We Rave’ produced by DJ DiJital on the Predator Riddim. There’s also his ragga soca ‘Friday’, and his other power soca ‘All We Want Is’ is also endless vibes. Another person who you CANNOT sleep on is Royall. ‘No Pity’ last year was a SMASH! His 2013 track ‘Mad Anthem’, produced by Wetty Beatz is another crazy song which I think a lot of people are sleeping on but I know www.vincyezine.com

OPINION when people hit the fetes and it starts to play they will soon learn about life! Another fun track is Recka’s ‘Butt Me With Respect’, which I think is just too funny and very well thought out! And d man have a point, if you gine butt me, do it with respect! (Is only right lol) Also for Ragga Soca, Bomani’s ‘Wine of your Life’ is an excellent song! Another HUGE track is ‘Me Alone’ by Kev out of the Kre8tive Entertainment family. Yo! It too nice and the video for it should be out soon! I cannot wait to see that concept brought to life! Oh and make sure you listen to the Lively (feat. Zoelah) ‘Skin Out’ produced by

M

U

S

I

C

and when the DJ plays that song, total and UTTER pandemonium erupts! I CANNOT WAIT!!! But these tracks are just the tip of the iceberg as at the time of writing this, Skinny has only released two songs and many other big artists are still promising releases in the days to come. But as a big Vincy Bad-boy fan, I will not be able to end this article without recommending Problem’s ‘Feting Life’… because this is my feting hand, and this is my feting rag and this is my FETING LIFE! Another big tune, trust me when I say that!

Fya Empress Fryktion… bare slackness for the road!

Also check out ‘Most Waist’ on the Contest However, Fya Empress is at the TOP of Riddim… that beat is vibes. the CLASS so far – all her releases have been HITS! From ‘Ah Ketch It’ to ‘Lahlo’. I am looking forward to Carnival weekend My personal favourite is ‘Ah Doh Know with great anticipation because I know my Meself’... now THAT is tune! I have already theory is correct, and I KNOW that 2013 envisioned the road on Carnival Tuesday... is going to be a MAD year! And with after passing the judges, we’ll have had one those recommendations, predictions and too many rum punches in our blood stream, conspiracy theories, I gone again! www.vincyezine.com

MISSION CATWALK

SEASON 3 PREMIERE REVIEW

S

eason three of Mission Catwalk has attracted some of the best emerging talent the Caribbean region has to offer. The show has expanded to include designers from St. Lucia, St. Vincent –represented by our very own Shernica Mayers – Antigua, Haiti and Bahamas, who will now join the likes of Jamaica, Barbados, Trinidad and Tobago, and Guyana in TV’s hottest design challenge. Designs from Season 3 episode 1.

This year’s rivalry will redefine the term ‘fierce’ as Mission Catwalk Season 3’s main theme is ‘Runway to Retail’. The series is focusing on mentoring the blossoming designers to become big name retail designers, with the expert guidance of veteran fashion quality control specialist Kay Devitian, who has worked with international fashion brands, such as Jones & Co New York and Ralph Lauren. The grand prize will consists of showing a collection at London Fashion Week, a large cash prize, a fleet of industrial sewing machines, and the chance to take courses at London College of Fashion. The initial design challenge was to create a piece of Caribbean-inspired clothing which could be taken anywhere in the world and recognized as being uniquely Caribbean. Competitors were encouraged to be free and creative with their designs, while keeping the notion that the winning garment would be reproduced and sold in retail stores.

SEASON 3 Their designs were modeled on the runway, where we saw some pretty awesome pieces as well as some very confusing ones. The three best and least favorite designs where brought out for critique by the judges – who in my opinion did a wonderful job with their critiques. The observations and recommendations were on point.

of tangerine, burnt orange and warm golden yellow”. The show was a pleasure to watch and the designers are all stars in their own right. I could not help but laugh every time Sharon Shaw spoke with that HEAVY Jamaican accent. Sadly, she was eliminated along with Mwanza Glenn, from Guyana, in the premiere. The show is available to watch on YouTube, and you can also search the Vincy eZine website for all episodes. Happy viewing! Since the Premiere, 8 episodes have been aired so far, with a 9th scheduled for this weekend.

Winning designs from first 6 aired episodes

After the critiques, it was Theodore Elyett, from the Bahamas, who came out on top with his orange print dress. He used “…the most unique tourist experiences while on a Caribbean getaway as his inspiration. The warm, unmatched beauty of a Caribbean sunset, which features beautiful radiant hues

ON THE CARNIVAL ROAD

O P I N I O N

If you can brave it, wear it! Cool things we might see on the road this carnival! By Stilly

E

very Carnival, you’re bound to see something on the road that makes you stop and stare. Weirdness and uniqueness is a must for j’ouvert, but outside of that you’re still going to be shocked by something or the other. Here’s a list of some cool things I hope to see this season.

1

Full body suit – these suits are quite popular in the USA right now. I suppose this year we’ll see that brave individual or two who will be running about in one this year. Face/body painting – Hate to state the obvious, but again, it’s about taking it to another level. I imagine there will be quite a few elaborate face and body paintings this year.

4

2

Cool hairstyles – a lot of people usually dye their hair for Carnival. But this year, I’m hoping to see people do a lot more than just dye their hair a different colour. Let’s wait and see what styles we’re going to witness this year.

3

Viking – With Bunji Garlin’s ‘Differentology’ video making waves right now, we’re sure to see a Viking or two on the road.

www.vincyezine.com

5

Diva’s – as a man, I like to see a woman with a statement suit. Not that I’m encouraging slackness, but if you’re brave enough, wear it. The Vincy eZine team will be looking out for the ‘wickedest’ dressed/decorated person on the road this year. Surprise me, fans! Exceed my expectation and imagination! Vincy eZine | Vol1 Issue 3

INSIDER VINCY MAS 2013 ALL THE MAJOR HAPPENINGS Who doesn’t love a packed and jamming Soca party? The bigger the better, right? It’s super important to make sure when you’re chilling with friends for Carnival that you have a good posse with you to ‘vibes’ with for the night. Carnival is an extraordinary party with many fun-filled shows. It’s one of the only times that SVG is fully alive and awake ‘til sunrise, and sometimes longer. So, here’s a run down of what’s happening for Vincy Mas 2013 – it’s going to be massive! The level of excitement we’re feeling in the air is enticing. A few songs have already caught Vincy eZine’s attention, and are on their way in becoming Soca hits!

There’ll be free drinks (no cheap stuff, eh!), a fashion show, then a shuttle that will take you to SOV for a little ‘wine up’ (because it’s carnival after all). Yes, we’ll be up in that!

sic and paint before taking to the streets in their thousands. Don’t forget to set your alarms if you’re going out the night before… or if you’re really hardcore, go straight through!

We know we haven’t covered every single event, but keep locked to the website and Facebook page for more information and updates. Just set aside some extra dollars (right next to your ‘vex’ money lol) so you can add these events to your schedules. Also, if there’s an event we overlook that you think is a ‘must attend’, let us know…we’ll add it.

........................................ EVENING STREET PARTY MONDAY, JULY 8 VENUE: STREETS OF KINGSTOWN

This is the time to party on the road in t-shirts and scandalously short shorts! Join one of the bands and ‘palance’ behind a music truck with your friends. With the steady stream of drinks that each band usually provides, you’ll have to pace yourself because Carnival ain’t done yet!

........................................ MARDI GRAS TUESDAY, JULY 9 VENUE: THE STREETS OF KINGSTOWN

“The fun, the flair, the fantasy.” No day better captures these three promises for Carnival. Of course, you need to jump with a costume band to have the full experience. Which band should you join? Doesn’t matter; they’re all amazing with their displays of creativity and craftsmanship. Prepare for the time of your life!
