Hey guys!
EDITOR'S NOTE
So the months of March and April have brought some much needed relief. The nights are less chilly, the pre-Carnival party season (Easter weekend) is right upon us, and we’re finally putting a little back into our savings account… at least, those of us with a job. Yet, despite all this, the struggles never seem to leave our front door. It’s there just waiting for us to take a step outside.
The struggle is
real
In this Issue Music producer superstar Alex ‘Kubiyashi’ Barnwell shares his story and his style in our featured story. Fashion Designer Shernicia Mayers tells us a bit about herself and what she’s up to. We’re also not wasting the sun and lush vegetation in this issue, as we flirt with bright lights and fresh colours in our Easter fashion spread. The Carnival countdown has also officially started as we team up with The Network SVG to bring you those early Vincy Mas planning tips. We’ve also got you covered with hair and make-up advice and Cleo’s ‘Pillow Talk’ article is sure to get those bedroom conservatives thinking. There’s also hot cross buns, our obsessions, a music guide and much more in this issue. Hope that wasn’t too much of a spoiler! Get to reading and enjoy! www.vincyezine.com
Compared to other parts of the world where human rights are violated on a large scale, and food/ water are scarce commodities, we’re pretty fortunate here in SVG. But with increased crime, unemployment and very little options for entertainment, a lot of us are too familiar with the saying “Life is a struggle.” We’ve been dealing with our own set of issues and, though others may expect us to hide it, we’ve always been quite transparent here at Vincy eZine. The advertisers just rolling in like we’d have hoped and this definitely will impact out promise to deliver issues every month. It would be much appreciated if persons contact us to find out how you can make a donation (financial or otherwise) to the magazine or even spreading the word about us to your friends with businesses. That being said, it is quite refreshing to receive all the messages and posts congratulating us on our efforts and issues. We’ve posted a few below for you to see. Thank you for your words of encouragement and support. Much love as always goes out to my team, who I really couldn’t do this without. These are the reasons why Vincy eZine keeps pushing through – to ensure that the niche which we’ve filled here in SVG stays filled. Forever providing you with local coverage on fashion, entertainment and lifestyle. Vincy eZine | Volume 2 Issue 1

According UK National Health Services, oral sex is defined as “…when you stimulate your partner’s genitals with your mouth, lips or tongue. This could involve sucking or licking their penis (also called fellatio), vagina, vulva or clitoris (cunnilingus), or anus (anilingus or rimming).” Research has shown that there is less risk from sexually transmitted infections, including HIV, with oral sex than vaginal and anal sex, but there is really no 100% safe sex. There is even evidence of the risk of throat cancer as a result of unprotected oral sex.

Vincy eZine | Volume 2 Issue 1
That being said there are things that you can do to reduce your risk of infection and add pleasure: • Use plastic wrap (like Cling Wrap) on the vulva (outside of the vagina) & anus • Use a dental dam. A dental dam is a flat rectangular sheet of latex. • To increase sensitivity, use lubricant on the underside of the plastic wrap or dental dam. • If using a latex dental dam, be sure to use a water-based lubricant. So no petroleum jelly, lotions or oils. • Be sure to dispose of dental dams or plastic wrap after use. Do not re-use • The barrier method also works for rimming (licking of the anus) • In a pinch, if you don’t have access to plastic wrap or a dental dam, cutting a condom open to form a rectangle is also useful • For oral sex on a penis, use either a flavoured or non-lubricated condom together with a condom • Some water-based lubricant inside the tip of the condom, can add to the condom-wearer’s pleasure www.vincyezine.com

It’s been a while since anyone has actually sat down and listened to an ENTIRE album, so for now here is a list of singles from a wide range of artistes/ groups from around the globe. ARTIST: WILD BELLE TRACK: KEEP YOU This reggae tinged track from this brother/sister duo is very intriguing but once you watch the video you realize that creativity has no limits. The visual for this single is funny, twisted and has a deep commentary on the immaturity of some men in relationships. There is also a chance that it might not even be that deep. In a nut shell, it’s not a boring video and the kid is mighty entertaining.

ARTIST: BANKS TRACK: THIS IS WHAT IT FEELS LIKE I am so late on this one and I don’t know why; there is absolutely no excuse for missing out on this goodness. At the moment, I don’t even remember how I stumbled across her music, but I went on a replay overdose on Soundcloud. It must suck to look so much like a model than a young woman with a beautiful voice, well, I’m sure it doesn’t suck, but you get my drift. Try a little bit of Banks.

ARTIST: NEW STARZZ & SARAH MARKS TRACK: HOT GAL TUN IT UP I’m a longtime fan of both Sarah Marks and New Starzz – both of Vincentian heritage. They definitely kept their standard of quality music with this track. Good one for pumping in your room or jamming to at a party.
ARTIST: SKINNY FABULOUS TRACK: BEHAVING THE WORST (BTW) All throughout Trini Carnival #BTW was trending in the region on a number of social sites. Skinny Fabulous has officially changed the meaning of the acronym from ‘by the way’ to ‘behaving the worst’. Come Vincy Mas, something tells me this is going to be my anthem heading into all the various events. Make sure you check out page xx for our feature on the man who produced this track.

GET TO KNOW
MUSIC PRODUCER KUBIYASHI
Written by Shavar Maloney
“On weekends my family would get together and jam - my father, my brothers, my cousins and I playing while my mom sang - something like the Brady Brunch, you know?” 2014 has been a great year for Caribbean music, particularly in the genre of Soca. With Trinidad & Tobago’s Carnival just finished and Vincy Mas poised to make the summer really hot, this year has so far produced some big hits such as Skinny Fabulous’s ‘Behaving The Worst’, Machel Montano’s ‘Happiest Man Alive (HMA)’ and ‘Haunted’, and Bunji Garlin’s ‘It’s a Carnival’. Behind every great song is a singer, a songwriter and a producer. While we see the singer, we only hear about the producer. This year, one name has been the talk of the region – Alex ‘Kubiyashi’ Barnwell. A name that is associated with every single record previously mentioned. A Vincentian by descent, Alex has been a pioneer in producing great music and has now moved to open his own studio in downtown Kingstown, St. Vincent. We sat down to find out more about ‘Kubiyashi’.
Tell us where you’re from? I’m essentially from Lowmans Windward in St. Vincent; however, I was born and raised in London, Ontario, Canada. I spent the majority of my young adult years in Canada, pursuing an education in Computer Sciences and Engineering. As a side interest to my studies, I
26

studied art, music theory, and was a member of the school and church choir.
You’re known as ‘the producer’. How did music become your passion? At the age of six, my parents introduced me to the piano. I had some classical piano training and they saw that I had an aptitude for it. I continued until the age of 12 when I took up musical responsibilities in the church due to my increasing abilities. With new founded confidence I played in school, taking a keen interest in the brass family of instruments and the drums. I can play the tuba, the trombone, the trumpet and the saxophone. I was also involved in the performing arts, events and culture in Canada so all this helped. In a smirking recollection of his childhood, Kubiyashi describes: “On weekends my family would get together and jam - my father, my brothers, my cousins and I playing while my mom sang - something like the Brady Brunch, you know?”
What lead you to leave a life in Canada and return to the Caribbean (besides the weather) and become involved in music? I originally came back when my parents moved www.vincyezine.com

BLACK ON BLACK We went digging & found out that Kubiyashi owns a vast collection of black t-shirts. A staple in his relaxed wardrobe. We paired a versatile black Henley from H&M with Levi’s boot-cut jeans. Inset Photo: The guitar belonged to Alex’s dad who passed away in 2010. It rests in his studio as a cherished memento.

back from Canada after spending all their adult life here. I came back as a part of their support system, and being here I wanted to take some time to figure out ‘island life’ and myself. That quickly made me realize the value, shortcomings and differences of the places that I have lived. When you’re in the Caribbean, specifically St. Vincent, you have an awakening – knowing the true you. When you’re in the Caribbean you get on island life, island time; you feel the freedom, the sun, the breeze, you just live your life. It sets the stage to infuse a mentality that essentially is behind my creativity; leaving behind the structured predictable life, and becoming part of the organic.
deconstruct myself and become something else. One of my favourite sayings is “sometimes you have to lose to win”
So how did you become involved in production? I started production in Canada. My dad apparently had ambitions to have his own band before he became a Pastor. He went on a spiritual journey in his adult years and became a scholar of theology and a student of spirituality, leaving his worldly ambitions to be a musical star. He still kept all his equipment
So how did the name ‘Kubiyashi’ come about? That name was given to me by first girlfriend, and later finetuned by my brother and I, because of our fascination with the popular TV show Star Trek (‘Kobayashi Maru’ in particular). I ended up using it as a handle on Bulletin Board Systems (BBS), the predecessor to the internet in the early 90s. I was hard core nerd, part-time hacker and troublemaker. I got in some good trouble with that name. It’s a hybrid of the strong, male Japanese name Kobayashi [with some letters substituted] to be unique. I am in love with Japanese culture (which is why I have Japanese Yakuza Art tattooed on my arm). The essence of the name, however, is from a Star Trek movie. It inspires the philosophy of when people think they know you, and set up themselves to compete against/destroy you – you end up being an adversary that is a contradiction of their own understanding; allowing for defeat and victory as a completely new person. I essentially continuously www.vincyezine.com
from this dream to have a West-Indian band in Canada. When I came of age in Canada I grew into it, and I played around with the equipment. I used my musical experience from school, playing in the band and formalized my training to figure it all out and set up an analogue recording environment. Around that time, the grunge movement was big and I would charge fifty dollars for musicians to come in and produce their records in my parent’s basement. The first song I ever recorded professionally was for a punk band called Puke, and the song was named ‘The Chicken’. I recorded a master copy on a Metal 80 cassette tape. Cassette tapes don’t even exist anymore like that. Vincy eZine | Volume 2 Issue 1

“I always look for the truth in music. The truth of talent and creativity is what I look for. No copycatting, mimicking or conformity to some idea of what you should be or sound like”
Who have you produced for in SVG? Skinny Fabulous, Icon, Danielle Veira, Karen Veira, Jamesy P, Mad Roy, Maddzart, Royal, Recka, Bomani, Marlon Roudette, Zoelah, Rusty, Abuza, DJ20, Fireman Hooper, and so many other artistes – forgive me if cant list them all. I have produced a lot of memorable carnival songs – it has been a lot.
You have had a major impact on the Vincentian music scene. 2013 into 2014 has been an explosive year for you regionally and internationally. How did the relationship with Major Lazer come about? I have a great working relationship with Machel Montano and he has always been one of the best supporters of my talents, a friend and moreover a purpose. He has pushed me on by highlighting the songs I have produced through verbal recognition and praise in public and private forum. The Major Lazer thing was sparked by my friend Gabija Mitchell who kept pushing me to work with them. After a lot of coaxing I got in contact with the Major Lazer team (Jillionaire) by sending them some of my power Soca beats – I believe it was the KafKaf Riddim. Gabija kept pushing, however, after some dead air from them I said to her maybe they’re not interested in the Soca scene or even working with me. One day, I got an unexpected Skype call from Andrew Swanson (Djemba Djembe by reference of Jillionaire), one of Major Lazer’s engineers/ producers and he sent me a beat to listen. He was like “don’t judge me” but when I listened to the beat, to my surprise it was in the Soca genre. It wasn’t exactly where it needed to be but I always like to help other creative people make their music

better. From there the relationship started with Major Lazer. I eventually linked with Diplo and we started working on a project, which is now known as ‘Sound Bang’; sang by Machel Montano. The Bunji Garlin record was an unexpected plus. Being creative people we share beats and stems, which led to me creating a beat that Bunji voiced and named “It’s a Carnival”. The project got us featured in Fader Magazine, and also helped broaden our reach and visibility on the world music scene.
What do you look for in music? How do you judge quality music? Express yourself. You are who you are. That’s what makes quality music. I always look for the truth in music. The truth of talent and creativity
is what I look for. No copycatting, mimicking or conformity to some idea of what you should be or sound like. One of my major plagues in creating music has been the ‘C’ word – ‘Culture’. It’s a base that critics have historically and presently attack me on. Nonetheless, I don’t think that some of these critics really understand what our culture is or what culture truly means. We have been true to ourselves, and to me quality music is the expression of exactly that. Sometimes conformity is perceived as culture – the shackles of what people expect you to sound like traps you in a legacy of music that ironically
32
Vincy eZine | Volume 2 Issue 1
has lost touch with the culture of people. It essentially becomes a celebration of ignorance. Vincentian or to be Vincentian – to reside, and to be of Vincentian descent is to be part of a culture that is of many faces. We are Carib, Arawak, French, British, Spanish, the African slave, and the East Indian indentured worker. We have to express ourselves with these many faces - that is our culture. Anything that I have produced has always been an expression through my experiences in St. Vincent / the Caribbean.
Beyond 2014, what is there for Alex Barnwell? After a series of enlightening experiences, I left my job at Mustique to pursuit music full-time. I honestly don’t know what the future holds. However, I know what I want and if I can think and perceive it, my thoughts can make it become real. As far as work is concerned I have some great content that I am presently working with Major Lazer in collaboration with Skinny Fabulous. I am excited about a production team called VOG with my big little brother London Future (Kurtis Wells). My team is massaging opportunities with international artistes and projects. Each day is a deeper descent into [the] unpredictable world of music. It is hard, difficult, sad, and sometimes painful – but that is the kind of thing I live for and love. I don’t want anything easy; I want to work hard for it! 2014 – 2015 is about maintaining what I have established and developing it further. The kind of growth I will be doing besides music will be to develop my business further into a 360 creative management and production. www.vincyezine.com

hot cross It’s Easter season again. While we all might not be running to church, most of us are going to have hot cross buns on Good Friday - and then the entire weekend and week after. In my article last Easter, I even mentioned how you could use cross buns to make innovative sandwiches for a tea party. This year, I decided to focus on some of the history and evolution of the hot cross bun and help you to make quick buns – hopefully with your own personal touch!
buns
Hot cross buns, as we know them, were created by the British. Their origins in Britain, however, are widely disputed. Some believe they were of pagan origin and later adapted by Christians who used the cross to signify the crucifixion of Jesus; while some argue that cross buns began as gifts to the poor from monks. Whatever the cause for their creation, they are largely enjoyed today as a part of our Easter customs, and baked on Good Friday.
“In St. Vincent, our family made dozens of cross buns at home and gave many away, and received many in return.”
Fairly recently, there has been some controversy in some countries about hot cross buns being sold on dates other than
Good Friday. Some Christians regard it as blasphemous, and recommendations have been made to remove the cross for

While I love freshly baked items, I hate the time it takes to make bread and the kneading and fussing involved, so I wanted to share a quick recipe for making cross buns with a simple ingredient list. I also skimped on the kneading to make a much less refined, but just as delicious, fast result. And you get to make your cross anyway you feel like! Vincy eZine | Volume 2 Issue 1

Hot Cross Buns 1 lb flour 1 pkg dry yeast 1/2 tsp salt 1 tsp cinnamon 1/2 tsp nutmeg 1/2 tsp ginger 1/3 cup sugar 1/3 cup margarine 1 oz dried mixed peel 2 oz raisins 1 cup luke-warm milk Glaze 1 tbsp white sugar 1 tbsp hot water Method 1. Dilute yeast in a large bowl with a small portion of the warm milk. 2. Sift flour and salt together. 3. Add sugar. 4. Add margarine and rub together. 5. And the remainder of the warm milk to the yeast mixture, and then stir in the dry ingredients, mixed peel and raisins. 6. Stir the mixture until it forms a ball of dough. 7. Remove from the bowl, place on a lightly floured surface and knead for about 5 minutes until the ball of dough is well combined. (This is the quick-method. For more refined cross buns, you should knead until the dough is smooth and even textured.) 8. Place the dough in a clean bowl and cover with a towel; allow it to rise in a warm area until it doubles in size.
38
Vincy eZine | Volume 2 Issue 1
9. Heat oven to 350°F, remove dough from bowl and on a lightly floured surface, cut the dough into halves and then cut each half into about 8 pieces of equal size. (If you’re making your cross with the dough, reserve about half a bun of dough to make your crosses.) 10. Knead and roll each piece of dough into a round bun and place on a lightly greased pan or baking sheet, allowing about 1/2 inch space in between the buns. 11. Add your crosses using any method except icing. If you’re using icing, you’ll have to wait until the buns are baked and cooled. 12. Bake in the oven for about 10 minutes. While baking, prepare glaze by stirring sugar into hot water until dissolved. 13. Glaze the buns with a brush and return to the oven for about another 10 minutes. The buns should have a golden brown colour. Serve warm. (If you decided to use icing wait until the buns have cooled.) *Two ways to make your buns different are by using pastel coloured icing or filling the cross slashes with jam.* www.vincyezine.com

ith Bunji Garlin’s popular song ‘Carnival Tabanca’ on replay since its release, I can certainly envision Vincy Mas 2014 amidst the beautiful Vincy horizon – talk about excitement! Dubbed the “Hottest Carnival in the Caribbean”, Vincy Mas is the most anticipated time of the year; I call it the ‘DB triple f’ period (drinks, bacchanal, friends, fêting and frum. Yes, frum = free rum anyone? #rumbo). As we approach the highly anticipated period of June 28 – July 8, my bacchanalist generosity sees it fit that I share some excellent tips to get you through this time of year. I know you die hard Carnival junkies will already be acquainted to these tips, so this is particularly for those Carnival virgins/amateurs. Let’s jump into it. This should not even come as a tip but fellas and ladies, health and fitness should be priority especially if you know you want your body to be looking on point. Start a fitness regime, join a gym, eat healthily; I can assure you when your body feels healthy and fit, everything falls into place (boost of confidence, increased metabolism).

So get cracking on saving those $$$ - nobody likes to be broke during Carnival. “Iza drinker to me heart” and it’s the truth! I say this for the majority of Vincies, after all we hail from SVG where the World’s Best Rum is produced. Monitor your alcohol intake though. Nobody wants to be so hung-over that you have to miss an event. Drink lots of water… for every alcoholic drink you consume, drink at least 8 oz. of water. DRINK LOTS OF WATER If you don’t, chances are you will become dehydrated and this can lead to fatigue and muscle weakness. Drink up to feel more energetic.
MOISTURIZE Moisturizing your face will keep it looking radiant and glowing throughout the day. If you’re going to be in the sun, use a moisturizer with SPF 15 (a sun protectant factor). This will protect your skin from the sun’s harsh rays.

BEAUTY SURVIVAL TIPS FOR TRAVELERS Traveling for the Easter vacation? Here a few travel beauty survival tips :) WEAR A LIP STAIN, LIP GLOSS OR MOISTURIZING LIPSTICK. Matte lipsticks tend to dry out and parch your lips. Keep reapplying gloss or balm throughout the day for a fresh look. MAKEUP SETTING SPRAY Apply makeup setting spray after you’ve applied all your makeup. This would help to control shine and absorb oil from the face and t-zone while preventing makeup slippage.

Vincy eZine | Volume 2 Issue 1
BLOT YOUR FACE Blotting sheets are quite handy. They help to remove oils and mattify the face without smudging it.
GET YOUR BEAUTY REST When you sleep, your mind renews, your cells renew and your skin renews.
PACK YOUR BEAUTY PRODUCTS Baby wipes are great for removing makeup in a rush. Always pack multivitamins, hand cream, cleanser, sanitizer and other makeup necessities.
AVOID WEARING MASCARA Avoid wearing mascara especially on long flights where you know you will fall asleep. Ok, I admit that I’ve done this before and it only resulted in me waking up to mascara under my eyes and my lashes stuck together. Not cute.
My absolutely favourite makeup setting spray is from the brand Skindanavia. Other popular brands include Model In A Bottle, Ben Nye final seal spray, MAC fix +, Urban Decay de slick oil- control, Make Up For Ever mist & fix and ELF studio makeup mist & set. Have a fantastic Easter holiday and stay gorgeous! :) www.vincyezine.com
Neon Faces By Ronelle King
Neon colours are all the rage this time of year; from tangerine lips to ultra violet eyes, makeup enthusiasts, I’m sure you’ve noticed! This eyecatching trend makes quite the statement when done right but one wrong swipe can take you overboard. The trick to pulling of neon without looking scary is to simply pick one feature to work with. Let’s start with eyes.
HOT PINK LIDS- apart from powder blue, pink is
one of the trickiest eye shadow colours to pull off. It doesn’t take a lot to go wrong. However, what you should remember is to concentrate the colour on the lid and blend it out with neutral shadows, make it smoky with a hint of dark purple or really vamp it up with black in the crease.
AQUATIC EYES- I’ll admit, some days we really
have no time to fuss around with makeup. An easy way to make a fluorescent statement is to line your top or bottom lashes with an aqua liner. Don’t own one? Well, you can achieve a similar look with a damp flat-angled liner brush and turquoise eye shadow. Why stick to shades of blue? Go the extra mile with violet or even winged out neon green.
PURPLE KISSES- All lipstick addicts know that
purple has now become the new red! From ‘Heroine’ by MAC to Maybelline’s ‘Brazen Berry’, purple lippies reign supreme. Try it in flirty lilac or a vampy shade of raisin, but remember if you’re going to commit to achieving a killer pout keep the colour on the lips and leave the eyes fairly neutral.
BARBIE LIPS- This is one of the most popular
trends of the season; we’ve seen it done wrong and we’ve seen it done right. An essential tip to when choosing your shade of pink is to remember that not because one shade looks good on someone else means it will work for you. Consider undertones whether it’s blue or one shade darker can make the difference between “I need that lipstick!” and “Why did she wear that lipstick?” Not ready to dive into the wonderful world of neon? Have no fear; a simple way to embrace this trend is to have fun with neon nail polishes. www.vincyezine.com

THE HAIR GARDEN
By Jay Ess-Vee
Natural hair + Beach/Pool = NO PROBLEM!
C
alling all natural hair women: the beach and the pool do not have to be your enemies this Easter! If you’re heading to Bequia or Union Island for the long Easter weekend (or any other destination that involves swimming), it’s going to be hard to avoid getting your hair wet. Especially when you see all your friends frolicking in the water, and every fibre of your being is screaming for you to join them! But never fear; it is very much possible to get as wet as you like WITHOUT your beautiful, kinky curls turning into a frizzy, hot mess! Just follow these simple guidelines and you’ll be good to go! 46
Vincy eZine | Volume 2 Issue 1
WET HAIR BEFORE YOU DIVE IN Yes, you read correctly. Before you hit the beach or the pool, wet your hair thoroughly with fresh water. This will significantly reduce how much salt or chlorine penetrates your hair. Both are known to cause breakage and dryness. WEAR A PROTECTIVE HAIRSTYLE These include flat twists, Bantu knots, 2-strand twists, plaits or (my personal favourite) braids – among others. As long as your hair is not entirely exposed to the elements, pick a fabulous style and rock the hell out of it to prevent tangling and reduce salt/chlorine absorption. www.vincyezine.com
fresh water, generously apply protectant, put hair in a loose bun on top of your head then tie your head scarf. A browse through YouTube (search for ‘how to tie a head scarf’) will throw up lots of creative ways you can do so.
USE A PROTECTANT Spraying or smoothing on a protective coat of hair cream, lotion, gel or oil will also minimise salt/chlorine penetration. Taliah Waajid’s Curly Curl Cream and its Curl Sealer are good for this; as well as Organic Root Stimulator’s Nature’s Shine and its Shea Butter Moisturizing Lotion. I prefer to use oils such as olive, almond, castor or coconut. Sesame oil is a good choice, too, because it is a natural
blocker of UV rays. Whichever you opt for, don’t forget to reapply every two hours if you’re at the beach/poolside for a prolonged period of time. BE CAREFUL USING SWIM CAPS These tend not to be the most stylish options out there, but if you find a cute one that matches your swimsuit, don’t hesitate to sport it! However, make sure that your edges aren’t being pulled tightly because this can cause breakage. Additionally, add extra protectant to your edges before putting on your cap. HEAD SCARVES ARE YOUR FRIENDS, TOO Don’t think that head scarves are just for your grandma; they’ve become popular of late and are available in a variety of funky colours and patterns. If you don’t intend to do any diving, these are perfect for keeping water splashes off your tresses. Wet hair with
www.vincyezine.com
DON’T FORGET TO RINSE! Never ever leave salt water or pool water in your hair. NEVER! No matter how tired you are after a fun-filled day, rinse your hair thoroughly with fresh water before you go to sleep. Salt/Chlorine will cause dryness and breakage; you can’t have that after you’ve done so well keeping your natural tresses healthy! If you have the energy, shampoo the same day – if not, do it the next day. Always use a low-sulphate, paraben free shampoo and focus on scrubbing your scalp. The shampoo’s suds will rinse down the hair shaft, providing a thorough cleaning without over-drying. Even if you have Vincy eZine | Volume 2 Issue 1
47
in braids, you can still shampoo and condition. DON’T FORGET TO CONDITION! While you’re enjoying the long Easter weekend with non-stop liming and partying, you probably won’t have the time (or the inclination lol) to deep condition your hair. Make sure you do it as soon as you get back home though! A trip to Acute Cosmetics, Kismet or any other good hair care store will provide you with a wide variety of choice – an employee will be only too happy to help you choose a brand. Wash hair then apply your conditioner; leave in for 10 – 30 minutes then rinse. My favourite is Organic Root Stimulator Hair Mayonnaise. It leaves hair soft and super manageable. DETANGLING DOESN’T HAVE TO BE PAINFUL A lot of natural hair women dread the detangling process BUT it doesn’t have to be a nightmare. Firstly, your hair should ideally be damp (NOT soaking wet). Apply a generous coat of leave-in conditioner or your favourite hair oil. Part hair into smaller sections, and comb through one section at a time with a WIDE TOOTH comb. Fine tooth combs and brushes are a big ‘NO’ in the detangling phase because they can cause breakage and further tangling. If your hair dries out before you have finished the remaining sections, damp again with water and apply more leave-in conditioner/hair oil.
