VINCY ME I used to think that proverbs were annoying; however, I find myself using them with increasing frequency these days. A proverb, by definition, is a saying in popular use that states a general truth or piece of advice. Growing up, I definitely heard my fair share of them, particularly because I was not a very well-behaved child. Here are a few more common ones my granny would use.

VINCY MAS REVIEW

VINCY

MAS

2013

A

s the summer holidays come to an end, Vincy Mas 2013 is but a fond memory for most of us, and Vincy eZine was definitely happy to be a part of it! The season had its ups and downs. Some of the most notable experiences were at the privately organised events, which had great performances from both local and regional Soca superstars such as Machel Montano, Destra Garcia, Bunji Garlin, Skinny Fabulous and Fya Empress – just to name a few. Skinny Fabulous – famous for his creativity on the Soca Monarch stage – blew patrons away with his performance this year. Between his use of a helicopter and the very well made props, it was obvious that he and his team had paid great attention to detail. This year, there was ample shows to satisfy the Soca junkies, and most were well-supported by Vincentians and visitors alike. We’re still, however, waiting for that over-the-top water party! The decision to merge Ragga Soca and Soca Monarch is still a bit of a mystery though. Ragga Soca is an original Vincy genre, and we really should try to push it as a unique, standalone event. Unfortunately, there were quite a few disappointments in between all the revelry. Although there were many popular tunes, it was evident that the big hits this year were fewer than those produced last year (see Peta Odini’s article). Also, as is usually the case, many up and coming Soca artistes, who definitely should have been given props for their awesome songs, went unnoticed. There were high hopes for a quality display from Miss SVG 2013 contestants, but the talent and interview sections fell short of expectations. Many considered it a wasted night, only salvaged by the comedic efforts of comedian ‘Candy Man’. Anyways, we hope you enjoyed the moments that we captured at the various shows… Black Rave, Slippery When Wet, and Mardi Gras in all it flair and splendor!

To the Ending Of The Day CARNIVAL IS DONE... By Peta Odini … the streets have long been swept and all evidence and traces have been disposed of and all that are left are the memories and maybe a lingering cough for those who had a close encounter with Chantal! I did not make it home and boy, let me tell allyo when the realization hit that I had to be a grown up and in doing so miss my favourite event of the year, I can assure you it was NOT a pretty sight… but anyway I got over myself… eventually.

ROAD MARCH HE DESERVES? I swear! In 2011 they didn’t even place the man, which to me was such a blatant piece of bold facery… yes I made up that word, deal with it. And from all reports this year, the man had it or at least a 2nd place! But is OH-KAY! He will get through because the man talks the best road tunes … Snap Shot will forever be cemented in my head as one of the best road tunes I ever wine up my bamsee to. My right knee hurt me for WEEKS after that carnival… SNAP SHOT! In D Road!

But I would also like to BIG up the other people It was very interesting observing Vincy Mas from afar, painful Next ting… Congrats ‘cause I find it had some other people who need to get a shout at times but interesting. I mean to Skinny Fabulous out for adding key ingredients to Kiddies Carnival was postponed!!! and Fya Empress on the festival. That was one for the history books. their domination of Royall for ‘Mad Anthem’, which I The people partied though a almost everything … thought was brilliant...future Soca tropical storm (we really doh party yeah yeah… kudos normal) and all the rest bacchanal and applause. Monarch King deyso eh. Kev of Kr8tive Ent for ‘Me Alone’, which in between. Clearly I missed a few good fetes and was another gem. Man like R3cka whose Soca I didn’t get to show Monarch intro video still does have me rolling anybody my wuk all over the floor in tears! I was told a full length up… but it’s alright; video and play is in the works. I hope I was not being pranked ‘cause that I want to see. I wanna next time. First things first as I big up Danielle Veira because I don’t know if mention that… WHY you guys know but ‘Til the Dawn’ and ‘Fetting DEM DOH GIVE Problems’ were two of the best put together SHANEY HYPES THE songs for the season. World class vocals and

production! Big up to Team Kubiyashi. Now for the Conchs man… I will not even lie, I heard the song and I was like yea man tune nice and glossed past it, but on the night of Soca Monarch I was like WAAAAAAAAAAT!!! So well done Skarpyon for that gem! Big Up the youth Rosario for having another big tune for the road… this was also overlooked. I swear the CDC needs to publish how exactly Road March is judged because well... I was fairly good at Maths at school but I still can’t figure out what must be some sort of highly complex differential equation.

mediocre at best. There were a few gems but in general it was all a bit meh. A lot of songs but not a lot of BIG CHUNES! This epidemic seems to have spread across the sea because the Crop Over tunes also suffered this year after having a stellar year last year. Don’t get me wrong, there was good music but there were too few moments when I found myself going “OH GOSSSSSSHHHHHHHH that tune BADDDDD!!” And as upset as I was that I missed Carnival, at the end of the season I was like meh… no big deal actually. So I am putting in an early wish for 2014 that we get out of this slump and we come hard to present music that will have the region pumping again because right now Trinidad has won the 2013 Soca Battle and well... I don’t like them results at all.

Anyway, now for the not-so-great part. At the start of the season, I was really hyped about the tunes that were to be released. I was excited and hopeful, I went and made big boasts and predictions and then by the end of the season I But at the end of the day, after all is said and was very disappointed. done, people still seemed to enjoy Vincy Mas The big hitters more or less got bowled for duck and that is good. I hope things will be bigger or a 1 or 2 runs… the few 4s and 6s that were and brighter in 2014, and that CDC will finally made came from the unlikely batsmen who get a Twitter account. Haha! put on a good show but it wasn’t enough to Take Care and Stay Blessed win the game. Overall, the Soca this year was Odini www.vincyezine.com

LOVE THY ENEMY

By Ken Onu

Occasionally, we cross paths with people we don’t like. The reasons are varied – personality clashes could be one. But if we are honest with ourselves, we’ll realize that the most common reason is jealousy – we want something the other person has. It could be a physical trait, like good looks; or it could be something on a different level, like intelligence or confidence. If we recognize the reason for our dislike, we can find a way to combat it. But, as is often the case, people are not honest with themselves, so they don’t recognize their feeling of jealousy for what it is. This is when relationships fail. In life, we may come across thousands of people we dislike and even abhor. And sometimes, the feeling may be mutual. Or, it could even be the reverse – the other person is the one who detests us. It’s a fact of life and completely unavoidable – we just cannot like everyone or be liked by everyone. A simple solution is to just avoid such people. Here’s the problem with that though: What happens when you meet someone at the

26

Vincy eZine | Vol1 Issue 3

workplace who you dislike, and then find out that you have to work with said person on a project for an extended period of time?! If you let your feelings get in the way of your work relationship, things could get out of hand. Either put your feelings on the back burner, or (better still) find a way to rid yourself of those negative feelings. The best way to do that is to find something to like in that person. Let’s face it, every person, no matter how despicable they may seem, has some good qualities. So just mentally note five positive qualities about that person, and focus on them. A good relationship is now already in the making. www.vincyezine.com

LOVE THY ENEMY To cement that good relationship, try speaking to them. If at first you get no response, keep trying. A simple “good morning” may be all it takes to break the ice. Perhaps you could even draw from your mental list of ‘likables’ and comment on one of those qualities. Even the most humble among us lap up praise. This is not necessarily sucking up to the person; merely thawing that frigid exterior (possibly made frigid by your attitude). Next, you could try to recognize what their strength is. For most people, their strengths are easily visible from the get go. But if not, look a little deeper and come up with something. This, too, would help you to combat your negative f e e l i n g s towards the other person. Finally, to seal the deal (so to speak), try having a mental conversation with your n e m e s i s . Imagine you and the other person are having a www.vincyezine.com

pleasant conversation. You both are getting along so well, even apologizing to each other for past ill will. Follow this exercise a few times a week, and that image could become a reality. It is so much nicer to make friends than to make enemies, and the unnecessary mental tension it relieves you of would make it worth your while.

he first thing I want my readers to know – especially those who were so privileged to have indulged in Vincy Mas – is that I was totally jealous of everyone who was in St. Vincent and the Grenadines for the festivities. Like seriously. I was green with envy between the first lap of CPR Sundaze and the last lap of Fete Like a King. *cries* When the day came for Slippery When Wet, I told someone that I wished they broke their leg (and I meant it too – yes, I was THAT envious). But now that Carnival is behind us ALL *smiles sweetly*, I’m getting back to my normal, non-green complexion. I really hope that everyone who had the opportunity to be in St. Vincent during that time had a blast. Today, I’m sharing a healthy smoothie, and an innovative way to jazz up water – which will undoubtedly help with detoxing your systems all the drinking and ‘being merry’ that Carnival/Summer brought with it.

Chasing the

crown How was your experience leading up to the night of Miss SVG 2013? I was definitely taken out of my comfort zone, which I knew it would. [This] was one of the main reasons I entered in the first place. It seems dreamlike looking back on it... I had such a blast visiting various places, and meeting new people. How was the night of Miss SVG? I was a bit nervous, but I pushed through that. There were some ‘behind the scenes’ issues – wardrobe malfunctions and what not – however, I had a great chaperone (Kimon Baptiste) who did a great job of keeping me focused. What do you think of your performance on the night? I think I did well, given that is was my first national pageant. On reflection, there are a few things I would change if I could go back in time for a

GETTING TO KNOW SHARA

I N T E R V I E W

The building blocks that make the woman:

Who is Shara? Ambitious

The Miss SVG pageant was the most ambitious endeavour that Shara has undertaken in her life so far. She has certain goals that she aims for in life, and although she has experienced a few setbacks, she has been fortunate in accomplishing many of them. Shara explained that she has many long term goals that she’s still working on, and she is certain that she be successful in achieving them.

Compassionate

Shara firmly believes that no man is an island, and as social beings it is important to be able to interact well with others. As a compassionate person, she feels this trait helps her to understand others better. She also has a soft spot for young children, with whom she loves interacting.

Optimistic & Determined Shara explained that she’s not the type of girl who ever believed in fairy tales. She believes in hard work and determination to attain what she wants in life.

www.vincyezine.com

Outgoing & Persevering

Growing up, Shara was quite a sickly child. However, that did little to dampen her love of adventure and physically-demanding activities. Her perseverance saw her through those challenging years, where she not only pushed through but conquered – becoming the 200m champion at her alma mater Girls’ High School. She was also an active member of various clubs and organisations such as Young Leaders, Young Achievers and Girl Guides Association, and sports such as Karate, to list a few. Shara does not consider herself to be a party animal, but did admit that she took full advantage of all the revelry that took place over the carnival season. Vincy eZine | Vol1 Issue 3

Summer

Barbecuing -It’s Thigh Time.

I

feel as though I’ve been bombarded with talks of grilling and barbecues since the start of May. The words pop up in every publication with a food section, and they are even sneaking into my inbox with clothing sales advertising the best BBQ summer wear. To be honest, I gave up early and started planning my own summer barbecue.

Vincy eZine | Vol1 Issue 3

www.vincyezine.com

SUMMER BARBECUING The first thing you should consider when barbecuing is the type of grill you’re rocking. Is it a fancy gas grill, or are you going with a classic charcoal option - an imported charcoal grill, or a rough grill fabricated from a drum or a gas cylinder? Gas powered grills make it easier to control the temperature of the grill and usually allow for varying temperatures on different sections of the grill. This makes barbecuing easier, especially for a novice, but these grills tend to be more expensive and, of course, you’ve got to have a cylinder of gas. Some people consider gas grills a bit of a cop out and prefer good old-fashioned coals, and all of the lighting, blowing, fanning and beer dousing involved. I’ve found that coals also tend to add a smokier flavour, which can be desirous. Pick your weapon of choice!

grill. Take your grill with both hands and shake it back and forth and side to side. If it becomes destabilized or rocks after you’ve stopped, you should consider improving stabilization or abandoning it altogether. Also, ensure that you have a good wire rack or grill grates for placing the items you plan to grill or barbecue. The last thing you want is your barbecue to be falling into the flaming hellish abyss of your grill.

Almost anything can be cooked on your grill. I love tossing vegetables with olive oil, salt and pepper and throwing them on the grill. People are usually surprised by how well the slightly charred grill flavour makes vegetables taste sweeter. It’s also good to have a couple sides that have already been prepared before you start barbecuing. Bread is essential if you’re having Conduct a simple shake test hot dogs or hamburgers. You to check the stability of your can make tossed salad, rice, potatoes and almost anything that you like to eat with barbecue. My advice to you is

this: Don’t be the schmuck that serves your barbecue with rice and peas, potato salad laden with mayonnaise and coleslaw with even more mayo... Or be that schmuck. Just don’t say you got it from me! Instead, try serving a cold rice dish and corn on the cob. Or be even more adventurous and make ramen noodle salad. Start with your regular coleslaw ingredients - shredded cabbage and grated carrot - add apples, ramen noodles, almonds and a dressing made from the flavour packet of the noodles for a salad of intense flavour and interesting textures. And now we get to the meat of the matter. We could talk about barbecuing anything from pork to mahi-mahi, but why not focus on a classic - good old’ chicken. When you’re barbecuing chicken, you’re really aiming for three things: crispy skin, juicy meat and a tasty barbecue sauce. There are a couple factors that add up to this.

Picking your chicken You want to be picky about the part of the chicken you use, because while you can basically throw anything on the grill and call it George, the results vary greatly depending on the part you use. Some parts dry out easily, while others are too fatty or too bony. My chicken part of choice for barbecuing this summer is the thigh. The dark meat is very juicy, with just enough skin to crisp up outside, and chicken thighs are simple to debone. This makes them easier to eat, and they cook much faster.

Marinating the chicken You can use a wide range of ingredients to marinate your chicken. Local green seasoning is a fast, easy way to add flavour. You can make a dry seasoning mix or rub by combining simple ingredients such as salt, pepper, sugar, powdered garlic and paprika. You also have the option of just using salt and black pepper on the chicken, but expect a less complex flavour if you do so.

Getting it crispy Ensure that the grill grates are clean before you start cooking by brushing them with a wire brush. Use an oiled paper towel to wipe the surface and keep food from sticking to the grill. Get the grill up to a medium high heat (if you can keep your hand a couple inches over the grill for longer than a couple seconds, then the grill is hot enough to start). Place the chicken skin down on the grill. After about 15 minutes try to turn the chicken over. If it’s stuck to the grill (and you started with a clean grill), then it is probably not ready to be turned over. Wait until the chicken frees easily from the grill. This ensures a nice crispy skin. When you have turned it over, grill for another 10-15 minutes (depending on the size of the chicken pieces) turning and basting with barbecue sauce.

Saucing it up/Saucy baby! The easiest way to make your own barbecue sauce is by starting with ketchup. I like to add acidity by using a combination of citrus juices. Brown sugar adds sweetness and an old friend taught me to throw in some rum for good measure. You can use a combination of other spices and seasonings to make your own signature sauce. Baste the chicken with barbecue sauce after you’ve turned it the first time, and continue basting until the chicken is completely cooked. If you’re nervous about when your chicken is cooked, use a thermometer and poke it into the centre of the thickest piece. The chicken is done when it reads 165 degrees Fahrenheit. Pile plates high, pull out the beers and enjoy the summer!

Ramen Noodle Salad

(4 servings)

1 pkg oriental flavour Ramen Noodles 3 tbsp vegetable oil 1 small cabbage, shredded 1 large carrot, grated 1 apple, cored and cut into matchstick sized pieces ¼ cup roasted almonds, chopped 2 tbsp balsamic vinegar 2 tbsp honey 1 tsp chilli pepper flakes 1 tsp parsley, chopped 1. In a bowl, combine shredded cabbage and grated carrot. 2. To make the dressing, in a small bowl, empty the ramen noodle flavour packet and whisk together with balsamic vinegar, honey and pepper flakes. 3. Pour the dressing over the cabbage and carrot salad, toss to coat and refrigerate. 4. Crush the raw ramen noodles into small pieces. 5. Heat oil in a frying pan on medium heat. Pour the ramen noodles into the pan, and fry until golden brown, about 2 minutes. Stir the noodles so that pieces do not burn. (All of the pieces do not have to be evenly coloured). 6. Just before serving, toss the apple sticks and almond pieces into the cabbage and carrot mixture. 7. Top with the ramen noodles and sprinkle with parsley. www.vincyezine.com

Barbecue Sauce Base (about 1 ½ cups) 1 cup ketchup ¼ cup fresh squeezed grapefruit juice 1 tbsp fresh squeezed lime juice 3 tbsp brown sugar 2 tbsp rum 2 tsp hot pepper sauce

1. Combine all ingredients. 2. Customize your sauce. Add herbs, spices or other flavourings. (Right now, I’m loving garlic and sesame oil).

Deboning Chicken Thighs 1. Using a short flexible knife, cut along the bone on bottom of the thigh from top to bottom. 2. Use the knife to work around the bone, cutting away the meat. 3. When the middle of the thigh has been cut away from the bone, use your fingers under the bone to pull away the meat. 4. Cut the meat away from each end of the bone. NB: If you’re starting with the entire leg piece, separate the thigh from the drumstick by slicing the joint where the two bones meet.

BEAUTY BY JINJER

The Makeup Files

Steal vs Splurge By: Jeneille Lewis of Beauti by Jinjer With countless makeup brands saturating the market, one is bound to find duplicates of their favourite products without paying too much for them. We have pooled together a list of our favourite products, and pitted them against their higher end counterparts to bring you a list of products you can splurge or save on.

FOUNDATION Splurge: NARS Sheer Glow Foundation (US $44.00) Steal: Revlon Nearly Naked Foundation (US $ 7.49-$9.99) Both foundations give you that natural, glowing, just-like-skin look that everyone is going for. Light to medium coverage and in a wide range of colors, any of these two would be perfect for creating a natural look, while still covering imperfections.

EYE-SHADOW

Splurge: Urban Decay Eye-shadow Palettes (US $50.00) Steal: MUA Eye-shadows (GBP £1.00) Urban Decay is the Queen of eye-shadow palettes and a cult favourite. While we’ll always keep buying them when they are released, the MUA shadows are equally amazing, too: very pigmented, long lasting and very much a bargain at only £1.00. We have numerous shades, all of which we love.

Every red lipstick lover should own this colour. For those who may not want to shell out $15.00 for a lipstick, however, Wet n Wild makes some amazing matte lippies that rival the quality and staying power of the MAC lipsticks for only $1.99. We own one in every colour!

POWDER Splurge: MAC Mineralize Skin Finish Natural (US $30.00) Steal: Revlon Nearly Naked Powder (US $ 7.49) The MAC MSF Natural has been a favourite of ours for years! It’s definitely the most repurchased MAC item that we own, however, who wouldn’t love a more inexpensive dupe? We love the Revlon Nearly Naked Powder as it goes with every foundation we own to create a natural, flawless look!

CONCEALER Splurge: MAC Pro Long wear Concealer (US $17.00) Steal: L.A. Jewelry takes people’s minds off their wrinkles. ~Sonja Henie~

Beauty, Outer Beauty, and True Beauty: Inner

What’s important?

by Shari Osborne of Wädäda Beads

Characterising someone as ‘beautiful’, whether on an individual basis or by community consensus, is often based on some combination of inner beauty (personality, intelligence, grace, politeness, charisma, integrity, congruence and elegance) and outer beauty, which includes physical attributes that are valued on an aesthetic basis.

I

started making jewelry for a variety of reasons, but most near and dear to my heart was my passion of helping women to connect to, own, and adorn their inner and outer beauty. So I set off on a journey to discover what’s really important when it comes to beauty, and how I can facilitate that process.

unique and beautiful. At any rate I believe that imperfection is far more intriguing than symmetry. By embracing your own unique beauty and enhancing the features you actually like, it’s possible to break free from this self-esteem trap. Accessories enhance our natural beauty and allow women to show confidence.

Many people look in the mirror and focus on the things they dislike about themselves. As a jewelry artist, I continuously hear: I need accessories that make me look beautiful. I’m no psychologist but it seems to me that we castigate ourselves unfairly at the risk of the bigger picture. The truth is, no one is perfect and we all have a feature that is

Today, beaded jewelry is very popular all over the world. Many jewelry fans show great interest in these wonderful pieces, and prefer jewelry made of beads rather than other materials. Adding beautiful and gorgeous beaded jewelry can greatly enhance one’s overall beauty. An immaculate sense of style is not necessarily something that you

JEWELRY AND BEAUTY should be born with. It is brought up consciously, developed by paying attention to the ocean of current fashion trends where you find something that suits your looks, personality and lifestyles. The best selection to start with are handcrafted jewelry made from quality natural materials such as semi-precious gemstones, freshwater pearls, shells, seeds, leather, wood, nuts, and feathers. Using natural, ‘mother earth’ materials, as a base to your accessories, can greatly enhance your beauty.

F A S H I O N

Earrings If your height is equal to that of the current fashion standard and you can boast of having a fine swan neck, don’t hesitate to wear long dangling earrings. They look especially flattering when paired with smooth hair. If, in contrast, you are petite, your friends are small earrings that will not look like weights on you. Chunky button-style earrings look fabulous on plus-sized women. Bracelets Bracelets are usually worn only on the right hand. If it consists of some segments without a gem in the centre, wear it loose on your arm. And, conversely, if a bracelet is adorned with gems centering it, don’t let it dangle on your arm. Brooches Brooches are very much in fashion currently. Young girls should choose small-sized ones. Single ‘flowers’ (or similar) are worn on the left side, 10-15cm below the shoulder or at the collar. Massive brooches can serve as the collar links. Best of all, diamonds match one-colored dresses, preferably a black one. But in case there are some plain buttons on your dress, the brooch should be 5-7cm. higher. You can fold a light scarf and pin it up with the brooch. For something extravagant, wear the brooch on the waist line, provided the design of your dress doesn’t allow for it. Necklaces and pendants As far as necklaces and pendants are concerned, the major dilemma is whether to wear them with high-necked or low-cut dresses. Feel free to experiment – decide what works best for you. If you have a jewelry set, consisting of a bracelet, ring, necklace and earrings, follow the principle ‘earrings+ bracelet’, ‘necklace+ ring’. Avoid wearing more than 2 rings at a time; it looks too excessive. As far as diamonds go, this gem is predominantly for evening wear.

I

believe that the jewelry you wear is a crucial part of how you present yourself to the world. When you combine your inner beauty with (outer beauty) accessories, the result is a naturally balanced, beautiful being. Choose jewelry designs that are simple, beautiful, and elegant, intended to compliment your beauty, not overpower it. Every piece of jewelry you choose should be handmade with great care and attention to detail, maintaining an emphasis on quality and ensuring that you receive a superior product that can enhance your natural beauty. www.vincyezine.com
