I

’ve come to accept that when it comes to partying, Vincentians definitely have some weird habits. This is true particularly around Carnival. God forbid that a song with some wild instructions – like Skinny Fabulous’s Monster or Fireman Hooper’s Animal – starts playing. It’s mayhem!

EDITOR'S NOTE

The one time I decided to join the bandwagon, I was quickly reminded of the foolishness of it all. It was H2O (Wet Fete) 2012, and Patrice Roberts was on stage performing her Vincyinspired track Miss Behave. Needless to say I was a little buzzed, and with water hoses

We Party a kinda how!

at the ready to wash me off, I decided to drop on the ground and roll. After the song was finished and I went to wash my self-off, the hose controller decided to turn off the water. My skin started to itch, and even when the water started running again, the damage was done. I woke the next day with rashes to match my hangover. That being said, if you feel to roll on the ground, kick up like a donkey or trample them down, kindly do consider that there are others who simply want to chip behind the truck and dance, without receiving an elbow to the chin. Be considerate of others on the road.

this Issue We have loads of tips for carnival as well as introduce you to some new artistes in our ‘Cool Alert’. We’ve endorsed Ahdrenalin Mas Band again this year, and have all their costume sections for your consideration on page 12. Also, for our younger audience, we have your prom beauty tips and a graduation-inspired photoshoot to go with it. Have fun reading; this will be out last issue for a while. However, there are great things to follow from Vincy eZine’s publisher, New Marketing and Research Solutions!

EDITOR’S STUFF OUT EDITOR JUST CAN’T GET OUT HIS HEAD THIS MONTH.

Just Jeon male accessories I was super excited when I saw that Just Jeon released new male accessories. So, I went out and bought one of their bracelets and a necklace. I’ve already worn them a couple of time. I’ve also bought a shirt from Fashion is Payne. Make sure you check out these two brands

Coconut Oil After I heard that coconut oil can help with skin aging I was hooked, but there are so many other benefits that splurging on good quality coconut oil every month is totally worth it. I picked up a bottle of Brio Chi coconut oil for skin care at Q-Care Pharmacy. They’ve also started making a coconut lip balm so I’m excited to try it soon.

Carnival

Do's and Don'ts For the regular Carnival goers, most of the things on this list you should already know. If, however, you’re a newbie to Vincy Mas – the hottest Carnival in the Caribbean – let me share a few pointers to keep you safe and healthy, and maximize your experience.

We’re starting with the

dont's DO NOT....Attempt to ‘throw waist’ on a girl with a 6 ft. 6 ignorant boyfriend... funeral homes close for the season! DO NOT....Drink and drive. Alcohol is expensive and if you drink while driving, you could spill it on your nice clothes. Not to mention, driving while intoxicated can cause serious injuries or even death!

10

Vincy eZine | Volume 2 Issue 1

DO NOT....Feel that the ‘red-woman’ who smile and jump with you on Carnival Monday would even want to SMELL you come Wednesday...ask her husband! DO NOT....Stand up in front of the speakers... it’s not an mp3 and I ain’t shouting at anybody after Carnival! DO NOT....Buy roast pork, BBQ Chicken or www.vincyezine.com

soup from a Rasta man name ‘Dutty’… Ovaz? DO NOT....Go to a fete with shoes that have straps... unless you like walking barefoot. (This is not ah formal occasion...use yuh sense lil bit nah) DO NOT....Wear white on J’ouvert morning, Monday Evening... Look… Maybe just avoid white for the season. We party “ah kinda how”, remember? DO NOT....Feel you’re the best swimmer at Slippery When Wet or any party near the beach... we won’t have time to look for you until the Wednesday! (AHEM!) DO NOT....Argue with a drunken coconut vendor because “it ain’t have no jelly”... the man obviously knows how to use a cutlass! (yuh could spell ‘chap up’ and ‘planass’??) DO NOT....Wear ah size ‘small’ costume, if your nickname is ‘Thick Ting’. Unless you aiming for 100 bad comments when Vincy eZine uploads your picture on Facebook.

And the

do's

DO…. Walk with what you plan to spend or you might end up having to stay home on Carnival Monday because you can’t afford the bus fare. DO…. Carry a crowd. So they can hold back the 6 ft. 6 angry boyfriend while you run away DO…. Check out Vincy eZine Vincy Mas section, so you can find out what’s going on and what songs are out this Carnival season. www. vincyezine.com/vincymas2014 DO… Keep hydrated. I’m not saying getting a little buzzed is a bad thing, but if you throw www.vincyezine.com

up on my shoe we’re going to have words…. Plus… no one likes a drunk. DO… Learn at least the chorus for your favourite songs… people notice when you don’t! DO… walk with your ‘vex money’… so, when you tell the man “kiss my ass”, you don’t have to walk off then wait by his car. DO… carry protection…just in case. You might suck your teeth now, but there’s a reason why we have so many born in April.

Underground Soca EXPOSED Every Carnival, close to the closing of the season, I always run across a GREAT song on Facebook or while listening to the radio that pretty much went unnoticed. This year, I’ve vowed to be a true bachannalist and not let it happen again. Luckily for you, I’ve decided to share a few of these NEW UP-AND-COMING artistes and those awesome songs that may go overlooked. So here goes! ARTIST: MY_LO TRACK: PEEL BANANA PEEL When my friend told me that he had a song equally good as Skinny Banton’s ‘Soak It Good’, I didn’t believe him. But hey, the song’s actually pretty damn catchy. With a name like ‘Peel Banana Peel’, you just know it’s going to be interesting. ARTIST: TABIA TRACK: TRANSFORMER A transformation occurs in every bacchaanalist when a good Soca song starts playing, and this song definitely hits the mark. Tabia’s been in the

22

Vincy eZine | Volume 2 Issue 1

business for a while, but since she’s taken a break for school, I just had to give this song a push. ARTIST: STAMINA SMURF TRACK: NO POP OFF I like the beat on this track, however, not too sure about the lyrics. I see people using the song to insult women, which is a no-no, especially around Carnival. But I’m giving him props for a great display of talent. ARTIST: JACE ft VYKINZ BAND TRACK: BACCHANAL TIME This is a great song to vibe to. I’m looking forward to him making it to the Ragga Soca competition. Jace first caught my attention last year with the www.vincyezine.com

track ‘Let Go’. Since then I’ve followed his progress. Also check out ‘Watch She’, ‘Tribe’ and ‘Yes’ by the same artiste. ARTIST: SHAZEKE TRACK: HORN 4 HORN If your girl really starts to get on bad when this song starts playing… be VERY worried. ‘Horn 4 Horn’ is one of those songs that elicits a positive reaction from the ladies, but will worry you at the same time. There are other new artists out there. Make sure you visit our website to learn about the others.

dappa X extra I’ll be honest with you. In my opinion, the song selection for Vincy Mas 2014 has been stronger in years gone by. But here are my top 10 picks of songs you should have in your playlist (in no particular order). • ROYALL - YAB (YOUNGEST AND D BADDEST) • TAMISHA NICHOLLS - D.M.I.U [DOH MASH IT UP] • PROBLEM CHILD – BUGGY RIDE & NO DISCIPLINE • FYA EMPRESS – SQUAT & COOL SCENE • SKINNY FABULOUS – MADE FOR THIS (RED BUTTON) & LIGHT UP • KEITH CURRENCY - PIECE AH THIS • JAMESY P - HIT N RUN • HYPA 4000 - YOU FEEL YOU BAD • FIREMAN HOOPER - RUM MEETING • FRYKTION - SOCA MAN More Soca at www.vincyezine.com/vincy-soca-2014 www.vincyezine.com

POWER

The show recently premiered on Starz, and is about James ‘Ghost St. Patrick, a wealthy New York night club owner who has it all. He caters to the city’s elite and has big dreams, but lives a double life as a drug kingpin. Sounds like nothing can go wrong with him? We’ll see! Did I mention that 50 cent is the executive producer of the show? Make sure you tune into Starz on Saturday nights.

TRUE BLOOD

The final season is about to start. Let’s just say if you haven’t seen this show about vampires and humans being able coexist because synthetic blood is available for vampires to feed on, then you have 6 seasons to catch up on. Did I mention there are telepathic, beam shooting fairies, shape shifters and witches as well? The season premieres Saturday, June 22 on HBO. Vincy eZine | Volume 2 Issue 1

Beauty fixes for prom By Ronelle King

1. HOMEMADE SUGAR SCRUBS: Homemade sugar scrubs are one of the easiest and most inexpensive ways to exfoliate, soften and brighten up your skin; leaving you with that picture perfect glow. To make, just mix 1 cup brown/ white sugar to ½ cup coconut/ olive oil and in a pinch of cinnamon or a dash of vanilla for that added decadence. 2. ZAP THAT ZIT: No one wants zits on their big night, so to reduce the appearance of pimples place an ice cube over it for about 45 seconds followed by a tissue dampened with eye drops for about 4 minutes. 3. MAKE THOSE EYE POP: Applying a white base to your eyelids will make your eye shadow colours pop and budge-free for the whole night. 4. THE PERFECT SMOKY EYE: Draw a slanted hashtag at the corner of your eye and blend inwards to create a quick and easy smoky eye effect. 5. FALSIES WITHOUT THE HASSLE: Try dusting baby powder over your first coat of mascara then following up with a second coat to really extend those lashes and give you that false lash effect.

PILLOW TALK ONE-NIGHT STANDS

O

ne-night stands are a firecracker of sexuality: short, explosive and leaving a lasting memory. We’re in no way promoting the habit but let’s be honest, no other season is riper with one-night stands than Carnival. Blame it on the alcohol or the sexually provocative music, but it’s true. When sex is had within a committed relationship, it is done with the hope of furthering love between two persons. Onenight stands, on the other hand, are a single sexual encounter without an expectation of further relations between sexual participants. It is often portrayed in modern shows and movies, however, just how susceptible are Vincentians to the habit? We wanted to know so we asked the public: “Do you see yourself every having a one-night stand? Give reasons for your answer.” Here’s what they said!

You Sound Off: Yes, I would like a one night stand with a girl since I’m single....sometimes to relieve stress. Leroy 21, Student One night stand is good for the soul sometimes. Blank your stress away. Monika, 28 Gov’t Employee. I used to see no big deal with having one night stands. I felt that it was the person’s choice and that there were no emotional wounds as it was understood that it was no more than a one night rendezvous. Then I myself began having casual sex and one night stands. I realized that I never felt settled with myself about it afterwards so I www.vincyezine.com

decided to reassess and revaluate my views on the subject. I started to feel ashamed and devalued, and wished I had looked at it from that perspective sooner. On top of that I had come to the realization of the [number] of STDS and STIS I had exposed myself to. That being said I would not be having any one night stands any time in the near or distant future. Ayesha 20 – unemployed Hell no, I don’t see myself doing that! IF YOU DO DECIDE TO HAVE A ONE NIGHT STAND, HERE ARE SOME TIPS ON HOW TO GO ABOUT IT • Skip the resume and life story. Let’s face it; you’re not going to have a one night stand because you think they’re a great guy or girl. • Never at your place – there’s no guarantee you’re not bring home a psycho who might show up unexpectedly afterwards. Go to a hotel or, if you’re freaky, just find a private corner. • Be safe - No matter what they say, unprotected sex can cause serious damage to your health or even lead to death. Make sure you have a condom. • Communicate - Remember you’ve just met, so let them know exactly what you like and find out what they like. It makes for a way better experience. • Be adventurous – nothing ruins good sex in general more than an unadventurous and inflexible partner. • Leave on a good note – even though you may never see the persons again there really is no need to be rude at the end. “If you’re wondering about the best way to bring togther a diverse group of people such as coworkers, family and friends, or maybe just hang out with your closest besties, you might be looking for something a little bit different. Not to mention, with all of the activities, you probably want to make quick, easy recipes. the morning, it’s always helpful to include items on your menu that you can complete the day before such as muffins, and to make sure other items are short on preparation and cooking time like a yoghurt parfait. To help you get on your way to a fantastic brunch (or just some really delicious home cooking), I wanted to share a couple of my favourite brunch items.

food such as cereal, bacon, sausages, eggs, fruit and pancakes. Then, add items such as muffins and savoury tarts, pastries and traditional West Indian dishes like bouljoul and souse. It’s always a good idea to have a combination of savoury and sweet items. Because brunch begins in www.vincyezine.com

Eggs are usually a popular breakfast item, but why not serve them in a more exciting way? Since most people like omelettes, making a frittata is an excellent option. A frittata is basically an Italian omelette, which, instead of being folded is cooked flat and finished in the pan in the oven. One of the best things about making a frittata is that you can pretty much throw in anything you want as a ‘filling’.

Yoghurt parfaits are really healthy and easy to make. A parfait is a dessert of layered items, usually of something cream-based with fruits and other toppings. In this case, yoghurt forms the base of the parfait and it is layered with fruit and granola. No brunch is complete without some cool beverages. One of my favourite brunch cocktails is a Bloody Mary. Made with tomato juice and vodka, and then flavoured with Worcestershire and pepper sauces, it can be a little surprising on your first try, but it is a quite delightful mixture of flavours, and regarded as a wonderful ‘hair of the dog’. I always use V8 vegetable juice which I think tastes much better than other brands of tomato juice and Lea & Perrins Worcestershire sauce. Check out the recipes below and have a fun summer!
