EDITOR’S note Hello Readers! I hope you didn’t miss us too much. We took a short sabbatical from publishing as we wanted to properly plan our year, and boy, what an exciting year it’s going to be! I want you to pay close attention to the magazine as we’ve made quite a few changes. No, I don’t plan on ruining the surprise with spoilers. I do believe that New Year greetings from Vincy eZine are order, as this is our very first issue for 2014. Volume two promises to be a bit sexier, thought provocative, insightful and colourful. Our publishing company New Marketing & Research Solutions also plans to roll out a few more products this year. If all goes according to plan, you’ll also be hearing about and attending (you better) a few Vincy eZine events, as well. Now, about this issue. The

Oxford dictionary defines a hero as a person who is admired for his/her courage, outstanding achievements or noble qualities. Some of us look to those who have liberated thousands in the past as our heroes, while others look to those making a current impact on their lives, such as police officers and doctors. For the rest of us, we make it even more personal and look at those who were instrumental in our development – like our parents. As Vincy eZine reminisces on what it means to be a hero today, we portray heroes of the past through fashion and take a look at some of the modern-day unlikely heroes. For me, my heroes have always originated from within my family. There are, however, quite a few persons I look up to as role models. I also acknowledge

the role that Joseph Chatoyer played in our rich history, and no one is more fitting of the title of National Hero more than he is. Today, our culture is being eroded by various external forces. Too many of us overlook the role our culture plays in paying homage to the many persons who fought for the freedom we enjoy. As we move forward, I hope that this message becomes clearer and that SVG’s essence is not lost in the whirlpool of globalization. We at Vincy eZine will definitely play our part to ensure that this never happens. Happy reading, and make sure you check out my obsessions this month on page [insert number]. Also, we’re on Twitter and Instagram now. Our handle is @vincyezine. We’d love to hear what you think about us!

The Bounty Restaurant’s Chocolate Fudge Brownie Snuggled away in the middle of Kingstown is one of SVG’s hidden treasures – The Bounty Restaurant. And although most would know about its delicious patties, the Chocolate fudge brownie is also worth the journey. It won’t help if you’re already working on your Carnival body, but if you’re looking for that chocolate rush, I swear that this treat will leave you entirely satisfied. The only downside is it looks so good on the plate, it’s almost a sin to dig in. /Editor-in-Chief

Sparrow Rum I’ve always considered myself more of a vodka person but as of late I’ve been broke, so I’ve been hunting for a cheaper alternative to my usual ‘screwdriver’. Curiosity led me to experiment with Sparrow Rum and the rest is history. Now, it’s definitely one of my top considerations when I’m hanging out somewhere with a well-stocked bar. It also helps that Sparrow mixes are easy on the wallet. /Editor-in-Chief

Even though they loved those things, they had just gotten tired of eating the same things over and over again and they knew it wasn’t very good for them. After all of the indulgences of the Christmas season, most people like to spend the first couple months of the New Year in detox, and in the gym. Something about the New Year inspires fresh starts and good decisions – as short lived as they might be. And I think our bodies are grateful for it. Yet, we often don’t remember that eating healthy isn’t always a www.vincyezine.com

Earthy Girl by Ronelle King

CONTRARY TO WHAT MANY OF US MAY BELIEVE, YOU DON’T ALWAYS NEED A PLETHORA OF COLOURS TO MAKE A STATEMENT. MANY OF US SIMPLY PREFER AN UNDERSTATED LOOK, SO HERE’S A FEW TIPS FOR VAMPING IT UP WITH NEUTRAL COLOURS.

1.

Cleanse your face.

2. 3. 4.

Not into foundation? Try using a BB cream or tinted moisturizer.

When it comes to the eyes try different hues of gold, copper, brown or greens. Add a wash of gold or copper eye shadow over the lid then try a dark brown in the outer ‘V’ and crease.

5.

Line your eyes with a dark brown liner or add a pop of colour by using a green or burgundy liner on the bottom lid.

6. 7.

Finish your eyes off with a healthy dose of brown mascara.

For naturally luscious lips you can simply add a pop of gloss or line you lips with a neutral liner and apply your favorite nude lipstick. For a little night time drama vamp things up with a luscious berry or deep burgundy lipstick.

Yes, creating the right look takes a little practice, so start with earthy shades such as brown, green, gold and copper. However, don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone and add a few hints of colour. Try adding a purple liner, pink lips or just a touch of bronzer. Remember it’s only makeup, so have fun with it!

LUNCH AT THE OLEANDER Review by Shennique Browne

I

n operation for just over a year, Oleander is located on the outskirts of Kingstown; on the road to Edinboro. The restaurant has a very old English feel to it and is decorated in neutral tones – which make it cozy enough for a date but professional enough for a business lunch. Oleander prides itself in using fresh organic, local produce; perfect for the health fanatics. Their fixed menu caters for everyone, which includes pan seared fish to the braised pork. 38

For starters, I tried the creamy vegetable soup. The savory soup arrived in about 10 minutes, was hot, thick, creamy and extremely tasty. It was more of a vegetable puree and I couldn’t tell what vegetable combinations were in it- which isn’t a bad thing in my book. I devoured my entire serving and was almost too full for my main course. Almost, but not quite.

Creamy vegetable soup

I tried the pan-seared fish as my main course. A modest serving of mahi-mahi was as tasty as ever. It was tender, well cooked, and the flavor combinations were complementary. It was served with mashed potatoes, fresh string beans, carrots, cherry tomatoes and a few slices of beet. A creamy vegetable and beet sauce was the finishing touch.

The tiramisu was a perfect ending to the meal. It was a nice balance of coffee, cream and rum. The different textures worked together quite well. It was a little strong but I’m complaining. If alcohol is not your thing, you should probably try something else! Overall: The service was great. The staff was attentive and knowledgeable about the menu. My favorite was a toss-up between the vegetable soup and the tiramisu. I really couldn’t choose which one I liked better. I don’t care much for beet, so I didn’t enjoy the main course as much as I would have liked, but this is more of a personal quibble than a critique. I gave it a 4.5/5. Price Range: $15-$50

The Power of a Woman W

omen tend to go through a lot more than men do, yet many of them come out strong in-spite of it! I’ve heard story after story of females who were sexually abused when they were young, and they still moved on and did great things with their lives. They take hits from every side. Magazines and commercials tell them that they are too fat. Fashion shows tell them that they don’t dress stylish enough. The Internet tells them that they need bigger butts and bigger boobs. Men tell them that they love them only to later hurt them; yet many bounce back from that. They go through physical and emotional pain sometimes on a monthly basis, yet so many of them can still smile. That’s power! But can someone please tell me why so many of them think they need to use their body and sexuality to get what they want? Many disturbing men have got

women perform sexual favours in exchange for cell phones, jobs, money, or promotions at work. Some wear really short clothing and show cleavage to entice their bosses, just to get an increase in salary. They may get what they want, but how are they going to feel about themselves after? I see females posing in very provocative ways all over Twitter and Instagram and they get a ton of followers. Some of them are borderline, if not fully, naked. Some of these same individuals tweet about how men suck and that they can’t find a good man. Well DUH!!! If you use your body to get a man, then the man is going to be attracted to your body. If he realizes that he’s not getting your body, then he’s gone. If he gets your body, then it’s “mission accomplished” so it’s time to move on. Either way, he’s gone. So women, you can’t attract a man by using your body, and expect him to hang around. Your power isn’t

You may slow him down a little but he’s still going to leave. That just means that you gave your body to a man who doesn’t want you anymore. I read somewhere that “you better do all the things that he wants sexually or he will find a girl who will” and it’s that mind-set that can cause so much heartbreak and pain in women. They end up doing things they don’t want to do to keep a man. If he leaves anyway, then you feel disgusted with yourself. If he stays, then you feel compelled to keep doing those same things. It’s a lose-lose situation. Your power isn’t in your sexuality.
