CLEAN FRESH & CLASSY

Achieving a great design this Christmas You probably want to leave a lasting impression on friends and family visiting your home this Christmas. At the same time, you want to be able to save some money, or make changes that are timeless, and would allow your dollar to stretch further. Here are a few tips that will help you achieve those objectives, as well as will leave your home looking clean, fresh and ultimately classy.

Never forget lighting. We live in the Caribbean Storage, storage, storage. IIn the Caribbean, where throughout the year there is an abun- we tend to not want to throw things away. dance of light. Traditionally, persons would cover windows with heavy, dark curtains which leave the room looking dark and dreary. Don’t get me wrong, you can decorate your home to make it work, but think about using lighter curtains to let in more natural light, and add flair if needed with some window treatments. Natural light helps to lift and highlight your colours and you save on your energy bill. 14

OPINION And I agree with you, old things can be reworked and reused; you never know when they may inspire you. Nevertheless, don’t clutter rooms with them if you want a clean and classy space. Instead, build up or under. Consider using tall shelves giving you more storage space and creating a more dramatic effect, or take advantage of the space underneath your bed to store things you’d want to keep out of sight. Invest in furniture that doubles a storage area.

or kitchen table will save you money as your style changes. It’s better to switch out the little things than to buy a couch every two years! At Courts SVG Limited, you will find a wide variety of Sofas, beds, tables and other furniture that would allow you to achieve just that.

Pick a theme and build around it. For example, if you’ve chosen a contemporary couch which dominates its space, don’t use an antique centre table and natural wood storage cabinets. Your room ends up looking tacky, Do not neglect your floors. We’d like to think and although the individual element would that noone notices the floor, but they do. seem high class and expensive, it would give However, no need to worry; you can make your floor work for you. Adding rectangular flooring helps to give a room a more elongated look. Cork and carpet flooring are easier on the feet, and would be a great investment as you move up in age. Vinyl is a great alternative to tile especially if you want to do installation yourself. You would be able to find a great design and material for your flooring at ACE an overall cheap and confusing look to the room. Once you’ve picked a theme, add elements that would complement each other. You should also pick a colour scheme and keep that in mind. Planning is extremely important. Courts SVG has a variety of different styles of furnishings to choose from.

Hardware. For a more cost effective option, purchase a good size rug for your living area and add accents to complement it. Anchor your room by investing in substantial furniture pieces. Buying a timeless sofa www.vincyezine.com

Build with a colour scheme in mind. We already explained that although things will stand out on their own, you must always keep in mind that in a room they must work together. Having a colour scheme helps you to achieve this. Use decorative pieces to disperse the colour scheme throughout the room. Don’t forget that cushions, table pieces and rugs are excellent pieces to use to incorporate your colour Vincy eZine | Vol1 Issue2

CLEAN, FRESH & CLASSY also make shapes like rectangles and squares, creating a box on the wall for framing out furniture, sconces or your favourite picture. With moulding, you can give the illusion of added depth and dimension to the walls. Like painter’s tape, making a small box with moulding can create a look that’s certainly classic.

Lastly, utilize the net. If you’re not very techsavvy, get someone to help you, or better yet, learn. There are thousands of design ideas out there. Visit the HGTV website, where they have various Do-It-Yourself projects and inexpensive design ideas. Learn about the new trends and products out there to help save scheme. Remember to take a this Christmas. minimalist approach that less is better. A few colours instead of many help create that clean and classy look. Choose accents wisely. Your walls, table tops and other areas in your room shouldn’t be neglected. This is where accents come in. Courts and Caribbean Lifestyles have excellent accents you can use. You’ve already learned about colour schemes, and this should factor in when buying or making your own accents. Just remember to stay away from cheap, tacky looking items. A print with plastic frames and cheap imitation glass can be spotted from across the room. Instead, purchase a piece of the metallic/glass wall art from Courts. Decorate tables with well-made vases from Caribbean Lifestyles. You’ll see just how much classier you can make a room by doing so. Add or Fake architectual design. party too hard, is quick to start fights, make inappropriate jokes about your other friend or a stranger or just plain out act like an idiot. My suggestion would be to unfriend them. Since that isn’t always possible (for whatever reason), the least you can do is not to invite them. No one enjoys their company and if you keep bringing them along with You have a little extra cash in your hand you, eventually you will stop being invited.

and with all the cool Christmas and New now your limits: For the inexperienced Year’s party/lymes going on, you’re drinker this may be a bit difficult. Here bound to go to a few. Here are a few rules you should follow RELIGIOUSLY are some rules when you’re just getting started; pick a drink/mix and stick to it, when you do decide to party a little;

K

Know who you’re partying with; going out with strangers is never a good idea, and it’s also potentially dangerous. Once drinking is involved, you’re going to want to be around people who have your back. So make sure that you have some really good friends with you. Remember, you’re less likely to be targeted in a group.

avoid doing shots or taking part in drinking games/challenges and take breaks inbetween drinks to properly assess your current state. Always have a friend around who already know their limits and can stop you if the need arises. Once you have figured out what your limit is, do not cross it. A Vincy Christmas Christmas doesn’t seem to vary much from country to country. Globalization has made it possible for American traditions and icons to dominate the holiday throughout most of the world. After all, who doesn’t think of Santa Clause when they hear the word Christmas? St.Vincent and the Grenadines though not immune to these changes, has done well to forward our own customs and traditions or at the very least incorporate our own little twist to Christmas customs.

The biggest event during Christmas has got to be Nine Mornings. According to the tourism authority website, Nine Mornings before Christmas, Vincentians awake in the early hours of the morning and partake in a range of activities. These activities includes sea baths, dances (or in local parlance, fetes), bicycle riding and street concerts. In the rural areas, the final morning of the festivity usually ends with a steel band “jump-up”. The origins of the celebration are clouded in mystery, some linking it to Catholic Novena, early morning church services in the run up to Christmas. Others say it is a ritual that has its roots in African culture brought to the islands by slaves. Food is also a huge part of Christmas for Vincentians, and there are a number of foods consumed traditionally only around the Christmas season. Sorrel, Mauby and Ginger Ale are some examples of juices consumed in larger quantities around Christmas. Persons also would purchase Hairoun products and other soft and alcoholic beverages in larger quantities to cater to guests. Christmas dinner would usually include but is not limited to rice (peas sometimes added), steam www.vincyezine.com

Black cake is also unique to SVG, and although other islands have their variation of fruit cake with alcohol, the Gonsalves Black Wine which is used to make SVG’s black cake gives it a unique taste not easily replicated by other fruit wines. It should also be noted that various communities would take part in Light-Up (The act of decorating a part of the community in Christmas lights and other decorations). The Light-up would run in conjunction often times with a concert or some other form of celebration. Persons would also light up and decorate the outside of their houses.

Other Vincy Traditions around Christmas • Christmas cleaning – this process may happen on Christmas Eve or well before that. Renovations and decorating are usually tackled around this period to make use of various Christmas discounts offered by stores. • Christmas shopping – persons shop more for their homes as well as to purchase Christmas gifts for others. • Church – persons would gather at Churches (with the exception of a few denominations) on the night of Christmas Eve to celebrate the birth of Christ. • Serenading – Small groups will walk through neighbourhoods singing Christmas carols or will drive from house to house to sing carols, sometimes for offerings. www.vincyezine.com

You see it all the time, women (or men) looking ridiculous in costume jewelry. It can impart a decidedly cheap look, an air of the tacky. It’s easy to recognize the effect. It’s harder to define the causes. What exactly is it that determines whether glass, crystal, plastic, foil, and/or a little paint appears stylish or just plain sad? In this article, we’ll find out what it takes to escape costume-jewelry sadness. We’ll learn what distinguishes quality from crap, and we’ll see how anyone can look fabulous in the fake stuff. It’s really not that hard to tell a nice costume (aka “fashion” or “bridge”) bracelet or necklace from something that could’ve come from a dollar store. You just need to know what to look for. 22

HOW TO MAKE YOUR

LIPSTICK LAST LONGER

By

Vincy Beauti Blog Jeneille Lewis

Beauty to me is about being comfortable in your own skin. That or a kick-ass red lipstick- Gwneth Paltrow

I

t can be quite a hassle to get dressed, do your make-up and put your favorite lipstick on only to have it wear off in an hour or so and there is nothing worse than fading lipstick that sinks into every crack and line in your lips. Here are a few tips on achieving that perfectly colored pout:

Step 1- Exfoliate:

Exfoliating your lips will make a huge difference in how your lipstick applies and more importantly, how it looks on your lips. For a home-made lip scrub, mix brown 26

Vincy eZine | Vol1 Issue1

sugar and olive oil and smooth onto lips. Using your fingers massage into your lips and then remove with a warm wash cloth. You can also use a soft tooth brush to remove dead skin from your lips before applying your lipstick. www.vincyezine.com

VINCY BEAUTI BLOG Step 2- Hydrate:

To ensure that your lip color bonds with your skin, your lips must be hydrated. Apply lip balm about 10 minutes before you apply lipstick to allow the moisture to soak into your lips.

Step 3- Lip-liner

Apply a shade that matches your lipstick, because liner will also serve as a backup layer of pigment when the color begins to wear off. Liner acts as a barrier, which is why you should always shade the entire lip when you want durability. Trace the outline of your lips, making sure you draw a symmetrical Cupid’s bow then fill in your lips, making sure you reach the corners and creases.

Step 4- Choose a Good Lipstick Formula

Forget creamy, sheer and shimmery lip colors. Select matte shades that would cling to the lips and last all day.

B E A U T Y

Step 5- Application

Apply lipstick in a tapping motion or apply with your finger tips. You want to press the color into your lips and gradually build as opposed to slathering it on. After your first coat, grab a lint-free tissue and blot by placing the tissue between your upper and lower lips and pressing down. Next, apply another coat. If possible, separate a 2-ply tissue so it’s one-ply, then place the tissue gently over lips and dab with loose powder. The tissue acts as a filter, allowing just enough of the powder to get through to set the lipstick without changing the color or texture of the lipstick.

If you wish you can follow up with gloss but for day time I prefer to keep things matte. Lasts much longer that way in my opinion. I hope you try these tips for longer lasting lipstick days. If you do, let me know.

The first thing is to know a little about who you’re buying for. Do they like gadgets? Do they like wearing the latest male trends? Do they enjoy the above average liquor? Once you’ve figured that out identifying something to buy is easy. If you’re a little short on change, try buying a cool graphic t-shirt. Avoid ties unless the person likes collecting them or you plan to buy a shirt to go with it. Of course money is always a fool proof alternative, especially when you’re dealing with a teenage boy.

It’s easy to identify what girls like, but it’s still difficult to please them. Therefore, figuring out what they want is important. Generally, girls would always be happy with a piece of jewelry. Can’t go wrong there. If you’re confident in your ability to spot fashionable clothing that would look good on her, that’s fine as well. Well, he does have a scar, barely visible really…. maybe they should call this show Beauty and the Handsome with a slight scar. The plot is also rather simple, and pretty overplayed, but not too bad. The show really does make for an interesting watch, but let’s just say it’s not high on my list. www.vincyezine.com

Chef

e s o r Amb What’s a dish you’ve put your own twist on? Cheesecake – I wanted to make it more Christmassy in the Caribbean context. So for a church gathering I cater for, I made a sorrel cheesecake with ginger glaze. Why culinary arts? I enjoy the smiles on people faces when they eat my food. Culinary arts is a passion that I delved into. I wanted to make sure I was in a career I was happy and comfortable doing. What

advice would you give to persons when

preparing x-mas dinner?

Cook in a happy mood. Reminisce on the good times with your family. Try cooking something simple. Do not go overboard with unnecessary seasonings. Stay true to your Vincy roots with big and bold flavours. What do you like cooking for yourself? I enjoy Caribbean comfort food. For example, barbeque chicken and potato salad. What advice would you give to persons who want to delve into culinary arts? Make sure that you love it. It should be a career that you see yourself happy doing 5 to 10 years from now. Just as any other career you have to be determined to achieve and rise ro the occasion. The sky isn’t your limit but the I had a chance to meet up with Chef Ambrose universe is, so be amazing and creative with at the home of We Cookin’; The Fairview the food and ingredients at your disposal. Guest House, located in New Kingstown. Is there anything else that you would like out Chef Ambrose is a young upcoming chef readers to know? in SVG who studied at Le Cordon Bleu Well I don’t like to brag about my food. I College of Culinary Arts in Miami – Florida, let my food speak for itself, so I encourage where she obtained an Associate’s Degree persons to try it. in Culinary Arts.

The dish Chef Ambrose prepared for us was said to be a representation of herself and what she likes cooking. The fried plantain represents a favourite for her that she grew up eating. The salad shows her love for fresh food, and red cabbage was added showing her liking of colours in her food. Chef Ambrose, like most of us, likes food that wouldn’t take up to much time to prepare and cook, and this is shown by her choice to use pasta and the chicken wings.

The chicken wings were Creole bringing out her love for Caribbean cooking and deep, bold flavours. Chef Ambrose aspires to own and operate her own restaurant which would focus on fusion cuisine. Fashion: Through a Caribbean fashionista’s eyes Hello again everyone! Back for more? I couldn’t wait for this new issue to reach your sore eyes. When it comes to fashion, you just can’t risk waiting and be left behind, since fashion changes every day!I I wanted to switch things up a little this issue, so I’m just going to jump right to it in one word.... PHOTOGRAPHY! I know,I know. Just hear me out. I know you might be shaking your head and wondering: Why talk about photography? What’s so important about it that made me decide to dedicate a column to it? And most importantly: What does it have to do with fashion? Actually, it has everything to do with fashion! Do you think you’d want to buy an article of clothing without seeing how it looks? Would you want to open magazines and books just to be given a description of something and not be able to see a photo of what they’re trying to advertise? Do you think you’d want to shop online if you couldn’t see pictures of items you can purchase? I can go on with the questions, and even ask questions that have nothing to do with fashion, and I can assure you the answers will be the same… no. No….you wouldn’t want to be bothered

looking for items that do not have a picture for you to assess for yourself if it is exactly what you wanted and no….you wouldn’t be able to see what’s new in different countries in terms of fashion. I can keep at this all day. Now when it comes to the fashion industry, it takes a skilled photographer to capture the essence of a design as well as the energy radiating from the model(s) wearing the clothing. They must be able to show the versatility of a designer, capture the message the designer is trying to show in their work and last but not least, make sure it can affect everyone looking at their work regardless of if it’s in a positive or negative way. In this issue, I’m going to highlight two photographers, both from the Caribbean with one being a Vincentian herself. I

introduce

to

you….*drumroll*……

Karen Hoglund of KandS Portfolios and Jr Morgan of The Morgan Photo company.

Please note: The following photos are copyrighted and should not be used without the photographer’s permission. The ones used in this issue were given the go ahead by their owners. 60

eet Karen Hoglund; a Vincentian national living in the United States, but born and raised on Vincentian soil. KandS Portfolios, is a merger between her and one of her closest friends, Summar Forsythe Scott, an American m a k e u p artist. Mrs. Hoglund is no stranger to beautiful t h i n g s , being from a land of beauty. After migrating to the United States, she had a stint in the modeling field, which led to her love of a camera.

as landscapes. I’ve personally worked with her since….. tahdah!....she’s my mom. Now don’t get it twisted. She is by far the toughest photographer I have ever worked with. She pushes me to do my best while I’m in front of her camera. I’ve had a shoot where we shot in the freezing cold during the winter in SWIMWEAR! For bookings contact her at KandSportfolios@yahoo.com or give her a call at 1(571)315-4411 Here are a few of her pictures taken throughout the last 3 years.

Mrs. Hoglund preferred being behind the camera and has done her fair share of taking beautiful pictures, as well as helping models in DC and Maryland update their portfolios. Mrs. Hoglund loves natural lighting and strives to take as many photos as she can while the sun is up, but she also has an uncanny gift of getting the best photos unexpectedly, in the weirdest places at the weirdest times. Not only does she do photographs for fashion, she also does kiddie photography as well www.vincyezine.com

Ikesha Art I focus mainly on using electrical jumper wires to make my jewelry but I also make use of fabric. I Decided to go for something extra-ordinary because I notice that persons tired of the same old beaded jewelry they are accustom to seeing. I therefore decided to explore the possibilities with using wires. I also make a variety of mens’ and womens’ bags from fabric, leather and mesh. My brand is different because of the material. There’s no one on the local market that makes jumper wire jewelry as you’ll see from Ikesha Art. We used the Vermont Nature Trails as the setting for our photo shoot because of its natural beauty. Ikesha Art simply loves nature, so we embrace nature in every possible way and that comes out in our handmade jewelry. Ailocious The style of the brand is bohemian inspired. TRUE FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION IS ONE OF MY DREAMS. If it can be woven, crocheted, wrapped or twisted, we can make it come alive. By wearing Ailocious jewelry you’re able to be transformed into the fantasy of this lifestyle and add to your artistic expression. That being said, I often design my pieces with a free spirited, open-minded feel. They’re very colorful being the fact that they are birthed in the Caribbean, so they naturally reflect the colors all around my creative space. The aim is for the wearer to feel the freedom and vibes of the non-conformist Spirit. The spirit of art and craft, with a life in the Caribbean type flow. In short, to feel Ailocious. We choose the Nature Trail for our shoot because we love nature and for its natural contrast to the colorful pieces. It is a part of our everyday world here in St. Vincent.
