HAPPY SINGLE ON VDAY

I’m happy being
Single on
Valentine’s It’s so sad seeing someone single on Valentine’s Day! I guess that’s what you’re all thinking, right? Sorry to disappoint, but as far as being single is concerned, Valentine’s Day - if you play it right - can be like Christmas morning. I mean sure, it would be nice to have that special someone to take you out or do something nice for you, but who said we single people don’t still gather our gifts and go out to eat? Valentine’s Day is actually a time of courtship. That time when singles actually start looking at prospects for a relationship. I love the fact that it’s also early in the New Year. New Year = young romance. I’m already excited! In case you’re still confused as to why I’m happy being single on V-Day, here’s the breakdown: • I get way more presents when I’m single. Yep, back in school, the ‘committed’ people weren’t the ones dominating ‘Sweets sheets’; the single were. I remember one year I collected such a haul that I had chocolate for months after. I kid you not. Now I’m a little older, I’m recruiting wine and better quality chocolate. I’ll take 3 boxes of chocolate over one any day. • Did I mention that the days leading up to V-Day are transformed into singles’

playground? Yum yum! All those single people playing the game of love and courtship….it can’t help but boost selfesteem. Just how many people have asked you to be their valentine? I guess it’s a little old-fashioned these days, but the game is still the same. Ready, set, go! • If you’re like me, you’re still not sure who’s going to be your Valentine date… or dates! Call me greedy, but there’s nothing wrong with being taken out for breakfast, lunch and then dinner, lol. That excitement of not knowing who you’re going to end up with and knowing that you have that option (guilt free) is awesome! That being said, there is also much satisfaction to be had from being in a secure relationship on V-Day. And if you’re in one, this article is not intended to encourage you to break up with your significant other; just highlighting a few perks of single life. After all, us singles use Valentine’s Day, if not to obtain a partner, to remind ourselves just how special and magical romance can be, and as encouragement to find someone special. To all our readers: Happy Valentine’s Day! If you’re single, don’t despair – this is the one time of the year you should be super HAPPY! www.vincyezine.com

ostume jewelry is an imitation of its expensive counterpart – providing a value solution that most people can afford. However, disappointment often sets in when the jewelry becomes tarnished. You can avoid this but you need to be aware of the pitfalls. Jewelry made from gold, silver and other precious metals withstands tougher treatment because those metals are durable and resilient; able to get through even the toughest of days with very little damage. However, costume jewelry is made from inferior materials that replicate the look of quality but are less able to live up to the same rigorous demands. The stones on costume jewelry are unlikely to tarnish, but can be shined very easily if they seem lackluster. Take a sheet of kitchen roll and add a little baby oil to it. Rub the stones with this but be careful to avoid getting baby oil on the rest of the jewelry. This helps bring out the colour of the stones more, and provides an attractive sheen. Buff the stones with dry tissue. Whatever little remains of the baby oil will be sufficient to keep the stones shiny.

The problem here is that chemicals from sprays or makeup can tarnish costume jewelry if it comes in contact repeatedly. Don’t forget to take off jewelry carefully to avoid clasps getting damaged.

A Baby’s Cry Mommy please don’t do this Please don’t give me my first and last kiss I was on the inside Waiting to see the outside To be in my mother’s arms, mommy I love you Please don’t do this, don’t you love me like I do you? Please don’t end my life Please don’t take my life Mommy please don’t do this Please don’t give me my first and last kiss I’ve been waiting for the day when I’ll be wrapped in your love Life- it’s a blessing from above God’s gift to man Now you’re thinking about taking it away from me. Why? I don’t understand ! What if your mom had thought about taking your life ? What if she had taken an abortion? What if she had ended your life? Think about it! Now tell me are you still going to do this? Are you really going to take my life? Are you going to take it? You journeyed with me for nine months now you’re about to take my life Mommy please don’t do this, please grant me the gift of life Don’t be remembered as the baby killer But as a loving mother I promise to be all that a child is suppose to be I’ll cry, I’ll be a bit of a challenge but I’ll repay you one day I swear Mommy! I beg you, please don’t take my life Don’t end my life Instead embrace the new journey And give thanks for you have been blessed with a baby I may not know your reason or the situation But there must be a solution This could never be the answer Please don’t be remembered as the baby killer But as a loving mother…… Written By Dillon Ollivierre www.vincyezine.com

Tivoli & Fiache Styles is a fashion house located in the city of Montreal, Canada. T&F goes synonymously with style and high fashion. We’ve been helping to change the lives of people through their personal styles since 2010. The force behind our company is Vincentian, Nicotello Fiache Tivoli Providence, born on the March 10, 1992, and grew up in the village of Choppins. At a very young age Mr. Providence knew he had a taste for fashion. In 2006, he became a member of Image Modeling Agency, while he was a student at the St. Vincent Grammar School. In 2008, after graduating from secondary school, Nicotello moved to the city of Montreal, where he attended the John Abbott College to pursue studies in Business

tried his best to push him in the direction of becoming a doctor, but Nicotello was not to be deterred from his dream of founding Tivoli & Fiache Styles. Being exposed to ‘high fashion’ every day in Montreal, and having strangers regularly make positive comments about his attire while walking through the streets, gave Nicotello the encouragement he needed to create styles and help change the way that people look.
In 2010, T&F created its first styles and since then we’ve been on a forward movement to launching our first children’s styles in late 2012. T&F has worked with Orange Modeling Agency and H&M in Montreal and Quebec, and was a sponsor of Amgine Entertainment’s end of year event Hypnosis. This is just the start of bigger and greater things to come for T&F. So, look out world, because we are coming to get you!

hile we in the Caribbean don’t go by the Spring/Summer/Autumn/Winter seasons, we definitely love to keep our eyes on the various associated trends within the beauty and fashion industry. Here’s our take on what’s hot for 2013! Red Lips: Classic red lips have made a
comeback this year, and we love it! For the perfect red pout, MAC’s Cherry lip pencil is a great staple, while its Night Moth lip pencil can be used to deepen colours to sultry levels. For a drugstore alternative, try Revlon’s Colorburst Lipstick in True Red or Wet N Wild’s Mega Last Lipstick in Stoplight Red.

VINCY BEAUTI BLOG BLOG NAME Dramatic Liner:
The ‘femme fatale’ image has continued with dramatic liner – it creates a savage sex appeal that intensifies the appearance of eyes, regardless of its colour. We’re big fans of Ruby Kisses’ HD Gel Eye-liner in Black and Urban Decay’s 24/7 eye pencil in Zero.

Emerald, Emerald, Emerald: Emerald
is Pantone’s pick for ‘Colour of the Year’. It’s fresh, radiant and happy, but with an alluring, darker edge. Worn on nails, metallic emerald is nothing short of a modern classic. On eyes, a deep emerald liner and mascara brightens and awakens peepers with an understated pop of colour. And for you bold, fashion-forward ladies, a deep green lip makes a statement.
Bold Brows: Gone
are the days of the pencil thin, overplucked brows. Keep a nice arch, but let the natural shape of your brow really frame the rest of your face. Yes ladies, grow out those brows! Or, until they’ve fully grown out, fill in any sparse areas using Sigma’s Beauty Design Brown kit or ELF Cosmetics’ eye-brow kit.

A WAYWARD Journey By: Jeneille Lewis
Some may remember her as the marketing communications executive at Cable & Wireless (now LIME) St. Vincent Ltd. Others may remember her as the local and regional winner of Face of Shabeau 2008. I remember her as the extremely down-to-earth yet fun young lady that I partied with at Notting Hill Carnival 2010. One word comes to mind when I think of Odini. Soca An avid lover of the musical genre, it is no surprise that her first collection, titled ‘A Wayward Journeys’, is as bright and rhythmic as the music itself. To prep her for the shoot, we only had to switch our cell phones on and watch her get in the mood while Bunji Garlin’s ‘Differentology’ blared from the speakers. “This is my anthem. Every time this song plays [in a fete], I have my hands in the air,” she said, demonstrating just how she gets down; her locs dancing down her back like the sunshine flickering off the sandy beach.

INTERVIEW WITH ODINI
Odini is not your typical female fashion designer. Not one to spend much time getting ready for a night out (she often tweets her annoyance with friends who take hours to get ready while she is done in fifteen minutes), she is a self-professed tomboy with a passion for menswear. We sat down with Odini after a long photoshoot to gain some insight on this young, vibrant Vincentian designer:
tailoring and the class size was considerably smaller than the women’s wear class and male models are always appealing. Ha! Q: Who is your biggest inspiration/style influencer? Who/what motivates you on a daily basis to keep creating? OS: Biggest Inspiration… I guess my mom. She’s been like everything for me, and she makes me want to be a better person, a stronger person. Style Influencers… I like really random things, not limited to menswear or even fashion. I don’t like to see people very well put together, though. Like something has to be a little off. I don’t believe in perfection.
Q: We had an amazing shoot – lots of fun, lots of laughs and lots of GREAT shots. You were surprised that they turned out so well, which was surprising to me because you’re such a natural in front of the camera. I think I asked you once why you stopped modeling… Why Q: Five things you can’t live without did you? OS: My Mommy , Soca, Sweets, Water & OS: I’ve never been a fan of being Twitter (*shame face*) photographed. I’m the person trying to duck the photographer at parties because I Q: If you could live anywhere else in the world, don’t think I’m photogenic at all. I stopped apart from SVG, where would it be and why? modeling because I think at the time it had OS: This is a hard one. It would have to be stopped being fun for me. I remember somewhere tropical with great beaches… doing my last show and the fun factor that somewhere that has a great carnival and an was in all the previous shows was just not appreciation for creativity… and somewhere that has amazing chicken wings… I’m not there anymore… and that was it. sure where that place is though… Q: What’s the inspiration behind your first collection? And why did you choose Q: How well are our local designers competing menswear? with their foreign counterparts? Do you think OS: My first collection was made in a panic. ‘Vincy’ fashion has a place in the international I had had a really tricky final year transition market? and to be honest, I was completely lost in my OS: I think we have a wealth of creativity in work and the deadline was looming. I went St. Vincent. I know for a fact there is a place back to a safe place, which was home. The for what we offer. There is a huge market collection is called ‘A Wayward Journeys’, for resort wear globally – especially now which is about an island boy trapped in that so many people are becoming so much the big city just trying to keep his sanity more fashion aware and they are always (not based on a true story at all *side eye*). searching for new and interesting things; in Menswear offered more pattern cutting and particular, things from ‘exotic’ locations. 26

INTERVIEW WITH ODINI
Q: You LOVE soca music. How does this influence your designs? OS: Hahaha… yeah my emotional attachment to Soca music is immense, and I think it is simply because it’s such a happy genre of music. It makes you smile, tap your foot, jump and wave and even buss a small ‘wine’. That is what my ultimate goal became, when I was working on my collection. Well not the ‘buss a wine’ part but to make something that would make the wearer and the viewer feel just a tad more cheerful – and every time I look at my work from my graduate runway show, I always smile. My collection was like 5 minutes of fun going down the catwalk. So it was successful in that regard! Q: Describe yourself in one word. OS: Wayward Q: Who is Odini? OS: Daughter, friend, fashion grad, brand
management student, Wayward Rasta, socaholic, soon to be something really cool and happy *fingers crossed* Q: You won Face of Shabeau in 2008. What was that experience like? OS: Surreal… I did not think I would win in St. Vincent, and certainly not in Barbados. There were times when I would ask myself why I had even entered the local competition. On the night of the show in Barbados, I didn’t even hear when they announced my name as the winner I was so certain Miss BVI had it. But it was such a great experience and of course it was nice to bring back a title to St. Vincent, even if it was just a modeling competition [laugh]. After winning I got to travel with Shabeau Magazine and the Shabeau Style TV crew, which was AMAZNG! My favorite trip was to Guyana; it was the time of my life… flying to Kaiteur Falls in the seemingly smallest plane ever, in the pouring rain over thousands of miles of jungle… FUN TIMES [laugh]
Tom-boy or not, Odini modeled her collection for the spread and turned up the heat factor! She’s currently pursuing a post-graduate certificate in Brand Management at Seneca College. We wish her all the best in her endeavors and look forward to more great designs in the future.

.Build atmosphere – Rose petals on the ground, candles or red lights, satin sheets and music may seem over played, but they work.

.Be vocal – Your lover needs to hear what’s really doing it for you and what doesn’t work at all. Not only that, but moans, sighs and even some ‘dirty talk’ can spur your partner on. Be mindful that asking questions during sex can kill the mood, so discussing it beforehand isn’t a bad idea sometimes.
13
.Get playful with some toys – More and more
people are using toys during intercourse. Personally, I’m not a big fan, but then most toys on the markets are for girls. In any event, you can give it a shot. Did you know there are some condoms with vibrator rings? That’s something I wouldn’t mind trying.

.Go with the flow – People overthink sex far too much. The emphasis should really be on following your instinct. It’s important to read signals; that way you figure out what they like and how long they like it done for. Don’t be afraid to experiment, but if your partner says ‘no’ or ‘stop’, please do!
14
.Take control of your orgasm – Achieving an orgasm is just as much your responsibility as it is your lover’s. They cannot give you the orgasm without your participation. So commit… don’t just lay there expecting your partner to do all the work. Get involved! www.vincyezine.com

oni Morrison is often described as being in a literary league of her own. Even if you have never read her work, you would have, at some point, heard of her. Hers is a name that is spoken highly of within literary circles; one that is often used as a standard against which other authors are measured. To be compared to Ms Morrison is to have your work recognised as some of the best on the market. After seeing her name crop up frequently on bookshelves, and receiving glowing recommendations of her titles from friends, I decided to give Ms Morrison a go. Cruising the aisles of a used book store one rainy Saturday afternoon, my fingers grazed the cover of her acclaimed masterpiece ‘Beloved’, and I thought that there was no better way for me to become immersed in the mind of the author than with the book that won her the 1998 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. Beloved is the story of Sethe, a proud and beautiful slave woman who manages to escape from her shackles, but remains forever haunted by the heritage of her bondage. Although away from the plantation to which she was bound, Sethe is 40

mentally scarred by the trauma that she suffered at the hands of her dead master’s brother. Years after her escape, she comes face to face with her tormentors who are intent on returning her and her children to the plantation. Rather than allowing them to take her babies, she proceeds to do the unthinkable. That deed, the one around which the story of ‘Beloved’ is centered, is revealed to the reader bit by horrifying bit. Throughout the novel, Morrison introduces us to the other characters in her tragic tale: Denver, Sethe’s only remaining child; Paul D, an old friend who was also a slave at her old plantation; and Beloved, a quiet and seemingly harmless young woman discovered sitting under a tree not far from Sethe’s www.vincyezine.com

Set in rural Ohio, several years after the Civil War, the book deals with slavery, its aftermath and the long lasting effects that the most wretched of institutions had on the people that it enslaved. The sadism of some slaveowners, the devices used to torture and keep slaves in check, and the desperate measures that some slaves took to protect themselves and their loved ones are fully explored throughout ‘Beloved’. The horrors of this fictional account amplify as the reader gradually discovers the real source of Sethe’s torment. The author writes with amazing clarity and insight into the workings of the plantation, holding her audience captive until the very last page. The voices of her characters shine through in an easy and comprehensive narrative, and the reader will find him/ herself becoming emotional about the stories that the characters tell. With her bold imagery and poignant language, Morrison keeps the reader enthralled until she is ready to lay her pen down – her story and the troubles therein finally resolved. www.vincyezine.com

MY SOCA LOVE LETTER TO PROBLEM CHILD
A
Any member of the Girls’ High School Steel Orchestra during the 1999 – 2001 period can testify that the songs we played the MOST were ’Roll It’ by New Direction, ‘Volcano’ by Red Plastic Bag and ‘Reveler’s Anthem’ – which was probably one of my favorites. I think we may have even played it in church (don’t quote me on that though... if anyone asks, we didn’t). But funny enough, at the time I didn’t even know who sang Reveler’s Anthem. It wasn’t until years later that I realized it was none other than our very own Shertz ‘Problem Child’ James. Problem Child is my favorite soca artist... FAVOURITE, allyo hear me??? FAVOURITE! To me he’s the best – without his contribution Vincy Mas ain’t complete. Which usually leads to people giving me a look like ‘she cyah be serious’. In my opinion, he is one of the most under-appreciated artists in St Vincent. The man is a POWERHOUSE in 52

the game and allyo better RECOGNIZE! My first recollection of Power Soca – like Power POWER soca, like throw wey yo whole frame get on chooooooopid in d dance POWER soca – was Problem’s ‘Mad’ produced by Zowi Stapleton a.k.a. The Great Zee. That song was CRAZY!!!! To me that was the beginning of Power Soca. I mean where else had you ever heard anything that forceful during carnival? Who else had sung a hook like that? And that’s when I started paying closer attention to Problem Child’s work. Every year, and I am not exaggerating, EVERY YEAR Problem drops a minimum of at least two HUGE tracks. Last year he had four – six of them. His consistency is undeniable. In comparison to other artistes, he releases a higher volume of work but what is most admirable is the fact that most of it is quality work. www.vincyezine.com

- a cool reggae track. There is also ‘Night Life’ feat. Danielle Veira which is a dance track. I think it is safe to say that Problem makes music not just to be Problem Child, Soca artiste extraordinaire, but because he LOVES it. He has a passion for the art... and that’s something I have major respect for! However the thing that makes Problem stand out from the rest of the crowd is not just his high energy music, but his lyrics. If you sit down and LISTEN to a Problem Child song, you will be pleasantly surprised by his clever use of language and innuendo. The man is pretty much a literary genius with muscles... and locs... and a great sense of style, he coulda lil taller though… *whistles* *side eye* ... moving steadily along...
But I think his writing is something not a lot On top of that, he also has non-Soca of people acknowledged prior to the 2012 songs, most recent being ‘This Love Is Real’ Carnival season. This was when it became

MY SOCA LOVE LETTER TO PROBLEM CHILD continued pretty clear that Problem is an amazing writer... AMAZING... because prior to 2012, I don’t think a lot of people realized he wrote all his sh*t. It wasn’t until Fryktion dropped Spanish Fly Riddim (best riddim for the year, hands down... don’t tell me nothing ‘bout nothing else) and Patrice Robert’s song ‘Lil Wine’ on said riddim went GLOBAL (Machel said during Miami Carnival, that it was the biggest song of the year, so I heard... and I trust my source on that one) that a lot of people actually stepped back and were like “hold up, he write dat???”

liance of the product. Anyway the one place he stumbles a bit is his stage performance. To be fair I think it would be difficult for anyone to do justice to a lot of the songs he has produced. I can’t imagine any top artiste I know of capturing all that energy in a live performance. The year he sang Mad House I was like YES!!!! This is IT!! The Soca Monarch is his (I might have cried a little after that night. Not a lot, but medium length eye water may have been shed)… Madhouse was the BEST song that year, hands down. But praises be... he is definitely improving his performance. His Soca Monarch 2011 performance of ‘We Miserable’ was by far one of his best; right before he stopped singing and started… ahm... Never mind LOL!
But it wasn’t just Patrice’s song; he wrote ALL the songs on that riddim and they were all GREAT songs. (Love the way - Danielle Veira, Get to know you - Ricardo Drue, Lil Wine - Patrice Roberts & Life of the Party that he sung himself) if you ain’t heard these Currently, Problem is in the process of atsongs by now... well... lol who am I kidding, taining his Trinidadian ‘Visa Face’, as he that’s impossible. We’ve ALL heard them by continues to perform with the Asylum Band, now... which if you ask me is the best internship I can say, with a smug smile on my face, that program that ever was. Liming and workI knew he was a good writer LONG DON- ing with Bunji Garlin and Fay-Ann like every KEY years ago! My appreciation of his lyrical night! Performing to thousands and thouability has been growing steadily over time, sands of people, fete after fete after fete... but it took a massive leap forward when I (Why de hell I can’t sing??? stupsssseeeee) heard Fryktion’s Yo Woman Butting Me. To I KNOW that for Vincy Mas 2013 Problem this day that song concept still remains one Child will most definitely still be top of my of the cleverest things I have ever heard in ‘One To Watch’ list... creativity begets creasoca. It is a deceptively simple idea, but the tivity, and the time he spends with the reactuality of the situation is so HILARIOUS. gion’s top lyricists and performers will only Could you imagine a man coming to u and mean that we are going to benefit from saying “Your woman is cheating on me”? an even greater product when our Vincy Like ... wey yo fo do after that??? LIME TV - According to its Facebook page, LIME is still in the preliminary stages of introducing TV channel services. As we all know, there are certain channels that we have grown accustomed to that we can no longer access here. So we’re hoping to see a lot more options than what is currently available to us. Follow them on Facebook to make your input and follow the progress.
WHAT’S
?
We’re always happy to see new things happening in SVG and the rest of the world. Here are some new developments that we’ve been keeping track of that might be of interest to you:
Restaurant Week! We love food, so anything involving food is definitely going to catch out interest. If the restaurant week being planned is anything like restaurant week in other countries, we should see large scale promotions for food products and restaurants. There should be specials and sample of foods available through the country. We’re not sure what date this is being planned for, but I do know it’s one to look forward to. Vincy eZine definitely will be! The Facebook link can be accessed by clicking the icon on the banner. BLackberry 10 - Over the past year, it seems as if all our friends have been jumping off of the ‘Team Blackberry’ trend. Although many people in SVG have remained loyal to the brand, it’s no secret that Blackberry’s maker, RIM, has been taking a beating. Well, they’re finally fighting back! BB10 officially launched on January 30, 2013. We checked out the launch online, and must say we’re impressed. The features, new apps and sleek design were enough to impress us, but functionality was definitely a huge part of its appeal. Expect their fastest, most powerful phone yet! All you hardcore internet shoppers may want to hold off on clicking that ‘place order’ button for a while because LIME SVG recently announced that it intends retail Blackberry’s latest offering. It might be a bit of a wait, but hey, a few months won’t kill! That’s it for now. Make sure you like us on Facebook and subscribe to the magazine for more great updates and information. If you know of anything else that we should mention, don’t hesitate to contact us!
