EDITOR’S NOTE It seems like just yesterday I had the idea to start St.Vincent and the Grenadines first entertainment, fashion and lifestyle online magazine. In reality, it’s been 11 months. I wanted to have a product that represented the best of SVG’s talent and culture and so I sorted out to do just that. It wasn’t easy. Many attempted to coax persons to partner with me were unsuccessful. I ended up learning to do many things myself, but even when my aspiration seemed far away, I continued improving my skill set and doing my research. What you see hear is a culmination of my efforts, with help from many different persons. I owe the team of persons who worked on the magazine with me a lot, the fashion community in particular. After launching my Facebook page and making my intention public, I was bombarded by a lot of well-wishers and contributors. I thank all of you for your motivation and hard work. This issue focuses on Independence. Given the name of the magazine and the month of the launch, I felt it was a fitting theme. I don’t want to give too much away or bore you with a long editor’s note so go on, read the magazine, love the magazine….and for the love of all things blue, yellow and green…SUBSCRIBE TO THE MAGAZINE. POEM Our Country, Our Home

‘Our Country, Our Home’ Written by Adrian Wright ©

I’m so proud to be a Vincentian, Though this land has no gold or diamond, The warmth of the people surround, Your heart drowned in all the love shown. Breadfruit and Jackfish our national dish, The Soufriere Tree our national flower. Take a romantic walk in the Botanical gardens, Experience the captivating flora and fauna, The Vermont Nature Trails, or Table Rock, Or take an exhilarating kiss on top of La Soufriere Volcano. Explore the beauty of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Represent the Blue, Gold and Green, like the Amazona Guildingi, Take a dive at one of the water falls, Baleine or Trinity, Explore the gems of the Antilles, feel the tropical breeze. Breathe the fresh air, relaxing in a hammock under the shade of the trees. Take a sip of the cultural wine; get drunk from the fun, Carnival Festivities, jump around in the July sun, Everything in moderation is good, and everyone is welcome. Vincy to the Heart, big up the whole crew worldwide, Sunset, SLR, Hairoun or Ju-C, raise your glasses high, And let’s toast to the best Caribbean Isle. Land of the Blessed, forever my home, even though I may roam, To distant places, among strange faces, I’m never alone. A loving Mother and child relationship, nothing can break that bond, Just ask Jamesy P, Alston Beckett Cyrus, or Kevin Lyttle why, And you will understand that this connection is very strong. Phyllis Punnet and Joel Miguel reflected this in our anthem, Our Country, Our Home, Songwriters and Musicians Inspiration given, Sitting upon golden sandy beaches watching the sun rise, over the mountain, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, this is a little piece of Heaven. www.vincyezine.com

The website belonged to Jennifer Lewis aka Louie Pepperstorm. It says; “The work displayed on this site was created by the artist Jennifer Lewis. She is a fine artist, jewelery designer, sculptor and most recently has been working with animation.” It proudly proclaims this, as if the denounce the faith that has befallen her. Jennifer was overwhelmed by the vibrancy of colours and richness of the culture. Starting out designing multimedia material for warehouse parties, clubs and stage shows, after various travels for work, Jennifer interest in the arts would grow, and she began to express herself through painting and sculpture. She also obtained BA in Jewellery Design from Central St Martins. Her website stated that during her time studying, her paintings took on a sculptural quality with many of the pieces showing the delicacy of fine jewellery and a sculptural quality in the form of collage, print and surface decoration.

Jennifer enjoyed working as a freelance designer According to the website, Jennifer was a painter, and maker producing processional sculpture and jewellery designer and sculptor living in London costumes with EEA and educational work with

Guide: The Healthiest Foods of All Time

By Alexandra Sifferlin

A

re you befuddled by what nutrition experts mean by “eating healthy”? The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) recommends loading up on fruits, veggies, whole grains and lean meats — sure, that sounds simple, but which fruits and veggies? What kinds of whole grains and what constitutes a lean meat? Fear not; eating healthy doesn’t have to be complicated. With the help of several nutrition experts, Healthland has taken the guesswork out of creating the perfectly healthy diet for you and your family. With the right kinds of foods, you can stave off heart disease, stay slim and boost your immune system. So what follows is a list of the 31 healthiest foods you should be eating now. Start stocking your fridge and pantry!

1. Dark Chocolate A recent study even found that those who indulged in a little bit of chocolate five times a week were slimmer than those who didn’t. “I tell all my patients that a little can go a long way,” says Janet Bond Brill. “Eat chocolate by the piece and not by the pound.”

How to eat it: Keep a dark-chocWhy it’s good for you: If you want to treat yourself, dark chocolate is the way to go. It’s better than milk chocolate because of its high concentration of cocoa, which is packed with disease-fighting antioxidant plant chemicals called flavonol; milk chocolate contains only modest amounts. Those antioxidants can help reduce the risk of blood clots and lower blood pressure and inflammation as well as improve insulin resistance.

Well hello all! I am thrilled that I can finally let fashion lovers out there take a journey through my fashionfilled mind. Now when we think fashion, I’m sure many of you think of American/European/African/Asia designers and their clothing/accessories/shoes and bags. Fashion isn’t just limited to those listed above. In fact, it goes all the way to hair styles, makeup, nails etc. Think about it. But that’s not what I wanted to delve into. I wanted to focus more on Caribbean fashion, yes Caribbean! More importantly my personal favorite designers. We are more fashionable than you think, and very talented in the field. I’m going to start with two islands we’re all familiar with, beginning with our own beautiful island, St.Vincent and the Grenadines!

MY TWO CENTS:

Coming from the Caribbean and being exposed to American fashions and trends, I’ve realised we as Caribbean people need to maintain our identity in the fashion world, and set trends for the world to follow. Too many times I look at the way most Caribbean nationals dress while living in the islands and came to the conclusion that not only are the clothing they are wearing not suited for tropical weather, but they simply look ridiculous copying what they see on tv or in magazines. Now, while nothing’s wrong with wanting to stay in the loop when it comes to fashion, it is down right stupid to copy EVERYTHING you see on tv or in magazines that are from outside the Caribbean. How about THINKING OUTSIDE THE BOX and utilizing our own trends and styles and making it your own. I want to issue a style challenge to anyone living in the Caribbean, to show us what they think are trends unique to our beautiful islands. Winner will be posted in my next column. The world is our stage. Ready set, GO!!!!

Ok now we all know we love to see models. I don’t know about you, but I love seeing how they incorporate runway fashion into their own personal styles. Sometimes we tend to have a love/hate relationship when it comes to them. However, try as we might, we cant deny their exceptional beauty and poise. Today ,I’m going to be focusing on none other than the beautiful TERRANZA FRANKLYN, and quite frankly(no pun intended) she is too gorgeous for her own good. Personally I love all things Terranza, from her beauty all the way down to her personality which she would never change for anything or anyone(thank god). Her sense of style is more on the simple sexy yet classy side. Thumbs up girl. Being overly sexy is sooo 1990. She is known for her smile, readiness to lend a hand, cracking jokes and just being as normal as the next girl. She lives her life being as humble as most of us can only hope to be. Some of you can take a page or two out of her book.

SKI N NY JEANS &

What Health Dangers Lurk in Your Closet? By Alexandra Sifferlin

H

igh fashion has a cost — and it’s not just on the price tag. Sky-high stilettos and skintight jeans may actually jeopardize your health, say experts who cite various health conditions, from bacterial infections to leg numbness, as evidence of the hazards of being fashion forward. Here are a few fashion risks to be aware of, so you can avoid the worst faux pas of them all: self-injury.

Fashion culprit: Tight jeans Health risk: Squeezing into tight pants (or cinching belts too tight) can cause nerve compression, numbness and digestive issues. Jones, who is working with TENA, a manufacturer of incontinence and bladder weakness supplies, to highlight the potential dangers of the tight pants, which include bladder issues, urinary tract infections, low sperm count, fungal infections, and a condition known as twisted testicles — a condition in which the snug-fitting slacks prevent the spermatic cord from moving freely, potentially cutting off blood supply to the testicles and requiring surgery to prevent gangrene from setting in. (Source: redOrbit Staff & Wire Reports - Your Universe Online) Fashion culprit: Stilettos Health risk: The narrow toe box and high heels of stiletto shoes wreak a lot of havoc, including bunions, hammer toes, nerve damage, bone death, stress fractures and ankle sprains. The higher the heels, the more a person’s weight is thrown forward and placed on the balls of the feet, which causes pain. The key is either limiting stiletto wear or finding a shoe with strong arch support and good weight distribution. Fashion culprit: Thong underwear Health risk: Rough seams can cause chafing and small breaks in sensitive skin. This allows for fungal growth and bacterial infections, according to Dr. Deborah Coady of SoHo Obstetrics and Gynecology in New York City, a problem that may be exacerbated by tight-fitting skinny jeans. Heat and friction of sexual activity can make these infections worse. She recommends protecting the skin around clothing edges with products like Aquaphor, vitamin-E oil, safflower oil or olive oil. Fashion culprit: Neckties Health risk: Tight ties and shirt collars (67% of men buy shirts that are too small at the neck) can cut off circulation to the head, causing blurry vision, headaches and tingly ears, the Wall Street Journal reports. They can also limit neck movement and increase muscle tension in the back and shoulders. Worse yet, since ties aren’t washed as frequently as other clothing, they may be laden with disease-causing germs. Another good reason to go casual. Fashion culprit: Earrings Health risk: The Wall Street Journal reports that about 20% of body piercings develop a bacterial infection, according to a review by Northwestern University dermatologists. Also, any jewelry or accessory that contains nickel — even in tiny amounts — can cause rashes in people with nickel allergy (you might develop one in adulthood, without warning). Further, heavy, statement earrings, if worn too often, can stretch out the earring hole making it difficult to wear studs, or possibly even tear through the earlobe altogether, an injury that takes a long time to repair and heal. www.vincyezine.com

ARTICLE The Heritage Parade

A moving theatrical performance of Culture and Heritage The National Heritage Parade Face with an age where globalization has led to the erudition of many cultures, SVG has been given a boost in trying to resist such effects. The National Heritage Parade, formally known as the Independence Culture Parade, is an annual parade which showcases the heritage and culture of SVG in many forms. This year, the Parade will be held on the 24th October, 2012 under the theme “Vincy Pride. The Parade starts from the Nutrition Netball Court at 2pm and will make its way through the streets of Kingstown to Heritage Square. Once the Parade get to Heritage square at 4pm, then a Concert will begin at 4:30pm. The committee this year has organized for a Cultural Village, where tents will line the streets of Heritage square and 34

Fire Empress, will perform at the concert along with other local talents (we’re not going to give too much away so make sure that you’re there). Steward, chairman of the National Heritage Parade Committee indicated that the committee largely consists of young people who are committed to bringing a new element to the parade each year. She also would like the public to know that the parade would not be the same as the military parade which persons may be used to, but instead a “moving theatrical performance.” Such is the committee’s commitment to culture in SVG that when they noticing the lack of a cultural wear for the country, they submitted drawings of a possible cultural wear. These drawings have been submitted to cabinet for their approval.

that corporate companies approached them to be affiliated with the event. The Bank of St.Vincent and the Grenadines as well as the St.Vincent Co-operative Bank therefore became the two major corporate sponsors associated with the event. Nationals of SVG, both locally and from the diaspora, also lined up to congratulate the committee for the fine job they did at the parade, lauding it one of the best new initiatives in Culture here in SVG.

Origins The National Heritage Parade evolved from the Girl’s High School Heritage Pageant, which the organizing committee wanted to take nationally. The committee then after receiving sponsorship from the Department of Culture decided to show their appreciation through the parade which began last year. Following the first parade last year, the committee soon realized that their initiative was so well received in SVG, 36

Skin Care 101 I am a self-professed product junkie. I’m usually the one that tries just about everything on the market in the hope of finding the right fit for my skin. This often results in a host of un-used products cluttering my shelves and money down the drain. It’s rather important to do your research on any product before you make a purchase and I’ve learned that the best ‘rating’ for a product often comes from persons with similar skin conditions as myself who would have used products formulated for them instead of paid actors and marketing companies who may have never had a similar condition or even used the product. I’ve discovered a few skin-care secrets that work just as good if not better that the over-priced ones on the market. And guess what? These can be found in your own kitchen cabinets! Let me fill you in: 40

Oatmeal:

Oatmeal is great for reducing redness and for protecting the skin against sun damage. Many persons suffering from eczema or dry skin may also find this particularly helpful. You can mix a bit of oatmeal with some warm water to form a paste. In the shower, massage your oatmeal mixture onto your face, rinse and pat dry with paper towels. Be consistent and enjoy clear glowing skin in no time.

Olive Oil:

Oil?? On your skin?? Yes. This is particularly helpful for persons who wear make-up on a daily basis. A lot of our breakouts are a result of having clogged pores and this often results from improper removal of make-up, dirt etc from our skin. One of the best ways I’ve found to do this has been the oil cleansing method. You can use pure olive oil or mix 3 parts olive oil with one part castor oil with to get that cleansing effect going. Massage a small bit into your skin and then apply a warm washcloth to the face for about 5 minutes. Do this at least three times before wiping away the oil and any other product from your skin. I usually follow up with a toner (witch hazel) or I may use my regular face wash to get rid on any remaining product. Why spend money on bottles upon bottles of Oil cleansers when you can make it yourself?

Olive Oil & Brown Sugar

= the best facial/body scrub ever: No lie. Olive Oil contains very good antioxidants which can help prolong the aging process. Olive oil can treat skin conditions such as dermatitis, dry skin, and rosacea. A homemade brown sugar and olive oil facial scrub is one way to take advantage of these benefits and get smooth, glowing skin. Mix ½ cup brown sugar to ¼ cup olive oil and apply the mixture to damp skin. Massage in circles for about a minute and then rinse with warm water. This should be done at least twice a week. Feel free to use this recipe on your body as well!

I hope you try these methods. If you do, let me know what you think! www.vincyezine.com

OPINION Youths

Many youths are in situations right now that seem hopeless. You’ve been struggling to achieve your goals. You’ve been struggling to get from one stage to another. As you try to advance you fall. You try to get up but you can’t.

The Youth’s Have something to say!

Sadly, in life, nothing comes easy. Hard work, dedication, determination, vision, self-belief, confidence and patience amongst other attributes are requirements for success. There is no easy road or back door towards success, there is one road and that road is often filled with challenges. Challenges that will push you inflict pain, make you feel like quitting and test your commitment. Think about this for a minute; if there was no challenge in achieving your goals how then would success feel? Would it feel as great as it does after you have endured through the hard times? Would it feel as motivating as it does? Often times when faced with challenges we feel the need to quit, question ourselves and begin to think negatively. We allow the challenges we face to side track us from what’s ahead. We ignore the fact that we have actually advanced closer to our goals and are now being tested before we can make another step. Instead we think; “it’s not meant to be” or we say “if it’s meant to be it will be.” During school life you are tested. Many of us are in such a hurry to grow up because they think that life as an adult would be easier. Life itself however, has

its own examination. We are often tested on faith, determination, commitment, confidence, application of knowledge and vision on the job, in relationships, in our venture and so forth. Being place in an uncomfortable scenario doesn’t mean there is no hope, falling to your feet doesn’t mean there is no way to achieve your goals neither does it make you a failure. What it means is that you must apply what knowledge you have to the situation. You must endure, have faith, confidence and remain determine. Instead of losing focused, remain focus and think of ways to overcome the challenge you are facing. There is no solution to the problem? That’s not true, there is always a solution. You just haven’t found it yet.

If Nelson Mandela had surrendered to negative thinking after being imprisoned do you think he would have become President of South Africa? Do you think that the celebrities who you idolize always found success easily? If they had surrendered during their struggles do you think they would have become teachers, role-models or success stories? When you fall view it as a test of your strength and determination for it takes great strength and determination to stand up each time you fall. When your back is up against the wall and there seems to be no way out, relax, free your mind then think carefully, analyze the situation, trust www.vincyezine.com

your instincts but more so have faith in God. Philippians 4:13 says, I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. This means you can achieve your goals, you can overcome the challenges you face daily, you can move forward after making some very disappointing mistakes, you can stand each time you fall. Remember these words of Audrey Heyburn ‘Nothing is impossible, the word itself says “I’m Possible!” In closing I’ll like to urge you to believe in yourself, never quit nor accept defeat on the journey towards your goals. You are the child of the most high God. Within you lies great potential. Look at the man in the mirror and harness your potential through some soul searching. Never give up always believe in “you” and have faith. Endurance is key to achieving your goals.

The right way to break up with someone Adopted from The 10 BEST Ways to Break up with Someone by BounceBack By Wes

48

Vincy eZine | Vol1 Issue1

Maybe it’s a sign that people are just less caring these days, but breaking up someone via text message or a public forum like Facebook just doesn’t cut it. In fact it’s rather cowardly! No one can blame you for wanting to break things off with someone. The fact is, not every relationship works. It’s better when you realize your current relationship isn’t working to end things, instead of being miserable with that person, end up resenting them and then having a nasty break up later. When the time comes to split however, please keep the following www.vincyezine.com

OPINION Relationship

in mind… • Be honest and direct! This is pretty difficult for people these days. They rather make up a story that doesn’t leave the person or themself feeling too bad. But the truth is no one likes being lied to. And who knows, maybe they might learn something from your honesty. Mark Twain said, “If you tell the truth, you don’t have to remember anything.” It’s just easier. And don’t get caught in a lie - you’ll just end up looking silly. Also be direct about it, don’t beat around the bush, it wouldn’t change the end result, but it may end up pissing the person off more. • Do it in person. Seems like the trend these days are to break up with people over the phone, via text or through a status change on Facebook. Come on!

trying to make the relationship work, the least you can do is show them the courtesy of doing it in person. Let them know you at least have that much respect for them.

• Let them know first. It’s fine to ask your close friends and family for advice about what you should do. Sometimes we need that extra person or two to reason things out with. However, it’s never nice when someone hears you’re going to break up with them before you actually do. Don’t broadcast it on Facebook or Twitter before you do either. This includes the depressing tweets and posts! Just break up with the person, don’t go around moping to others about how depressed you feel. • Do it before you stray! Don’t start cheating then break up with someone. A lot of us have the habit to secure the next girlfriend/boyfriends before we break up with someone. OPINION Relationships

trust me; it will never outweigh the guilt you’ll feel later. • Listen to what they have to say. Now I’m not saying to start listening to them and chicken our or change your mind about breaking up. Some people have no backbone. *SHAKE MY HEAD* But listening to what the person has to say is just as important as saying what you have to say. You may learn something that helps you in your next relationship. • Do it in the right place. i.e Do it someplace private! It’s going to be hard enough for the poor soul, especially if they didn’t see it coming. Don’t make it worst by breaking up with them in a restaurant, at a bus stop or amoung a group of mutual friends. • Don’t delay it. When it is over, it’s over. You know it - so it’s only fair to let your partner know as soon as you’re sure. No one likes to be strung along. Don’t think you’re doing anyone any favors by delaying the inevitable. • Keep the peace. You want to break up with someone so you start and argument about everything under the sun. Chill. Break ups happen. Know they’ll be upset, so just stick to the end goal, which is to end things cleanly, fairly and honestly. • Give your future ex a say. They may not want to talk to you or see you again. It’s really up to them. You should really try to respect what they say in that moment. But know that once they’ve had some time they may reconsider their decision. What you shouldn’t do though is after agreeing to be friends, toy with 50

Vincy eZine | Vol1 Issue1

their feelings. If you have no intention of getting back with them, you shouldn’t lead them to believe you do. • Leave the scene. Once you’ve had this difficult conversation, honestly and directly, in the right place and time, with no fights, you’re almost there. The aftermath is just as crucial as the actual breakup. Walk away. Let them be. Be an adult if you have an accidental run-in. And by all means, you made this bed, so be prepared to lie in it. The most important rule in dealing with breaking up with someone is the timehonored “Golden Rule.” Leave as you would like to be left. Being dumped is a terrible thing, and if it’s never happened to you, consider yourself lucky. Try to think about how you would want to be treated if the situation were reversed you’ll end up with minimal regret and the ability to look back on the breakup and feel that you handled it in the best way you could.

Doubt tries to stop me in my tracks, it tries to drain my desire Believing on the other hand can set my world afire There will be good days and there will be bad days There will be times when - I want to turn around, pack it up, and call it quits But a voice in my head says: Never give up, never lose hope Always have faith for it allows you to cope Trying times will pass, as they always do. Akley Olton is a young Vincentian with a dream of making films in his home country St Vincent and the Grenadines. In 2011 he graduated from the UWI, EBCCI with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Film Making (Hons). Despite the fact he’s had very “humble beginnings”, Mr. Olton now holds the titles; Cultural Activist, Photographer and upcoming Filmmaker, all of which he has worked persistently to obtain. His humble beginnings helped to drive his creativity and on recognition of his talent, Akley the artist was born, with a determination to make his situation better regardless of the economic situation here in SVG. According to Akley, Vincentian culture can be compared to our own local medicinal plants-“Vincentian culture is like the herbs around us with medical qualities, we don’t know how to identify it or we don’t give it that importance due to the traditional influence of ‘what is outside is better”. “The influence of the external forces isn’t a bad thing,” he stressed, “because even I like fancy things- but at the same time, there needs to be a strong sense of who I am as a Vincentian.” We know of many other persons who are operating selfemployed businesses here, their Plan B is to leave home and go abroad just to try and grow and to qualify on an international level, but we shouldn’t feel like it’s a struggle or like we have to run away from home to have successful careers. www.vincyezine.com

When asked about iRebel, his business, he said simply that it’s the business side of his own personality. It is a name to the work of an individual who is adamant in appreciating his own culture despite the external influences in existence. iRebel personifies Akley Olton and what he’s trying to do, not just doing what is expected but ‘rebelling against the programming’ in order to achieve via his own methods. In the early stages, iRebel seemed a success with the immediate group of persons in his social group while at university. However, the introductory stages of iRebel to SVG proved a challenge as he no longer had the client base obtained while in Barbados. Akley continues to push on through the daily challenges that arise. As an emerging filmmaker his areas of focus are editing, directing, and photography. Although most of his work thus far has been done while in Barbados, he has participated in creditable activities here in SVG such as; Camp innovate IT2012, 2007-Graphic art teacher at UNESCO and 2008 coordinator of art-Irise exhibition for CYAM, to name a few. By his academic efforts, Akley has earned a scholarship and acceptance to the esteemed EICTV film school in Cuba, to obtain advanced training in 54

The Significance Of Jewelry Through Time What Gems and Jewelry Have Meant to Human History Jewelry is more than just a decorative fashion item; it has held a distinctive and valuable place in the evolution of cultures and societies throughout human history, providing insight into the political, sociological and psychological elements of the times. Pretty impressive, right? Just say that to the next person who tries to criticize you for wearing too much jewelry. The first signs of jewelry date back to Africa over 75,000 years ago. Jewelry has been used for power, protection, worship, status, and beauty, and continues to carry its very particular meanings throughout various cultures.

Early Traces Of Jewelry

T

T

he Ancient Egyptians were the first to establish jewelry-making as a profession. Egypt was a class-based society and Egyptians were divided according to wealth and profession. Jewelry makers were considered middle class and were highly regarded for their skills, though they worked long hours and lived mainly in poor communities.

hen the Cro-Magnons migrated from the Middle East and settled into Europe, they made necklaces and bracelets out of bones, teeth and stone, which hung from animal sinew. As decorative trophies from a triumphant hunt, primitive jewelry was worn to recount stories: a means of communication. Carved bone was also worn at this time, however this was purely for practical Jewelry symbolized power and religious use, in order to hold clothing together. dominance and was believed to have magical properties, which protected Egyptian men and women from evil Ancient Egyptian Jewelry spirits, especially in the afterlife. an Egyptian died, they would be buried with all their earthly possessions. All social classes would wear amulets for protection, though the lower classes would wear ones made of cheap materials like clay. Gold was the favorite metal of the pharaohs as it was considered the skin of the gods. The color of jewelry was also very significant. For instance, green jewelry meant new growth for crops and fertility. Notably, Cleopatra’s favorite gem was the emerald. In the middle ages, only nobility had and wore jewelry. It denoted social rank and was religiously symbolic. Much of the jewelry was made by monks who were also skilled craftsmen. Jewels were created for the church as it was believed that “the creator might find an easier path to heaven”. Army knights would also wear jewelry as it protected them from evil spirits.

Jewelry in the Renaissance

I

n the 15th and 16th centuries, jewelry transitioned from religious and symbolic to more modern and stylish. Whereas jewelry of the Middle Ages was inspired by ecclesiastical influences, renaissance pieces were increasingly inspired by reallife and nature, offset by the discovery of the New World. The Renaissance marked a new era- and jewelry was allowed to be worn for beauty and fashion. The conquering of Peru and Mexico also brought about an abundance of gold and silver and opened up new possibilities and markets for jewelry. The Renaissance is often called “the jewel age”. It was during this time that the royal jewels became of increasing importance and value. King Henry VIII had an enormous collection of gems and stones, with a personal collection of two hundred and thirty-four diamond rings and three hundred and twenty-four brooches.

Jewelry from the 17th to the 20th Century

In the early 1400’s, it became customary to give precious stones as gifts for weddings, donations to the Church, or to bestow upon religious statues of saints. In terms of courtship, a lover would refrain from offering any jewelry gifts, so as not to expose a relationship or any dishonorable thoughts.

M

It was customary for jewelry to be worn on special occasions. Kings, queens, knights and noblemen always appeared in public with some form of jewelry.

In the eighteenth century, also known as “the age of gems”, jewelry-makers were in high demand, so much, that two types of jewelers evolved: the bijouterie (whom worked with gold and enamel

About Shari “Fashion is a recurring symbol in the story of my life. Ever since I could remember the ability of accessories to transform one’s identity has fascinated and captured my heart”. Shari Ollivierre-Osborne is a jewelry and accessories designer who offers her clients fantasy in the modern world. Wädäda Beads is the name of her jewelry line: “Wädäda” which in Ethiopian Amharic means “Love” hence her love for beads.

Vincy eZine | Vol1 Issue1

Born in St.Vincent & the Grenadines and raised in Montreal, Canada now migrated back to Bequia. Shari traveled to London and fell deeply in love with gemstone and vintage jewelry. There her passion evolved into an obsession for beads. Self taught, she instinctively learned to create jewelry one year later. It all began with the creation of a “Facebook” fan page. In November 2010 the handmade jewelry line was born

and growth has been positive. The line is geared towards women who appreciate art, culture and unique creativity. The entire line solidifies an aesthetic that is cultured and elegant. The idea of working with wooden pieces was introduced in 2011, where under her management she manages the importation of exotic lumber from Africa, South America and other parts of the globe. Wädäda signature hardwood pieces are all inspired by the symbolic meanings of the African culture. However she is equally inspired by modern, vintage and Indian fashion. In July 2012, Wädäda Beads partnered with local Vincentian designer: Kimya Glasgow to design accessories/jewelry for the local Vincentian Olympics team. Her designs traveled to London and represented the country very well at the opening ceremony. The locally grown “Blue Mahoe “was used to reflect originality and usage of natural elements. In the summer of 2012, Wädäda Beads launched L’arc-en-ciel (French for rainbow). This collection is inspired by the tropical weather which after every downpour of rain leaves behind a rare long lasting rainbow. In October 2012 Wädäda launched 2 collections: Think Pink and Land of my birth. “Think pink” was collaboration with SVGMA in the battle against breast cancer 50% of all sales proceeds was donated to the SVG medical association. “Land of my birth” collection is her first independence collection representing www.vincyezine.com

her heritage and Vincentian culture. All the hardwood pieces Blue Mahoe which is locally grown in the forest of SVG were used to create pendants and earrings. The idea was to use her country’s natural resources. Shari is currently enrolled with an online career college perusing a diploma in jewelry design aimed for completion in 2013. She plans to make the move to incorporate sterling silver and gold into her line for 2013. In addition to working on her jewelry line, Shari also works fulltime at Caribbean Woods Ltd Bequia as the Assistant Manager/ accountant. The Wädäda line is highly labor intensive and occupies much of her time, each piece is individually crafted by hand depending on the intricacy of the designs, it can take hours to days to complete a piece. Having 2 full time jobs is not easy and managing her 3 years old son and still finding time to maintain her family is an ongoing struggle. She sometimes works into the early hours of the morning in order to complete an order but approaches it as part of the sacrifice that she has to make to ensure that Wädäda Beads is successful. Her goal is to collaborate with other local, regional and international professionals in the fashion sector, and to put SVG on the international accessories market. Her motto is; Fashion-Forward designs... Unleash the divah within.
