VIOLET ROOTS

A monthly letter from the editor series to forecast the upcoming month, reflect on the past, and share life’s anecdotes.

Issue 09: Find Camaraderie in the madness of your messes & successes! I’d like to make it abundantly clear that community is everything. When you’re feeling like you’re under a massive pile of blahs and there is a never-ending to-do list it’s your community that gets you through all that. You can whine a bit to your significant other, get your mind off things with your friends or hash things out with your work peers. When it’s all a bit chaotic you can find

camaraderie in the madness. You can find a way to connect through your messes and success. Recently I took a mini break to give you some time to fill out my MidYear Survey. Initially I wanted to check in and see if what I’ve been creating on a regular basis is resonating with you. I also wanted to get some insight on future projects and give myself some time to take care of

operational tasks that had accumulated. Life kind of happened and although I did get some things done I didn’t get nearly enough. In fact I’m not certain there will ever be “enough” done.

No excuses y’know? just bite the bullet! I’m not sure if I’m being hard on myself or if I should be pushing harder. Blogging is weird like that. There are success stories but there really are no guidelines or rules to this game. Everyone has an idea of what it takes to be a journalist or what it takes to be a fashion designer. We have a general idea of success in those industries. If you’re a blogger you don’t have that. You know a sport journalist has made it if she’s now an ESPN anchor. You know a designer has reached a certain level of success if Rihanna is wearing their label or if they’ve won a CFDA award. I’m not sure I’ll ever be satisfied with my blog but I am always pleased to read your comments everyday. To hear your feedback and to get that extra push that I sometimes need. You’re a part of my community. I can’t thank those that took the survey enough for your time and honest responses. There are projects that I’ve been holding off on because of my insecurities and issues that are outside of my control.

“There are no rules to this blogging game”

I made the survey almost knowing what everyone was going to say and although there were a couple of surprises there was one overwhelming response that I knew was coming. Now that I know that it’s not only something I’m afraid of doing but it’s also what you guys want I don’t really have much to hide behind. No excuses y’know? Will I bite the bullet immediately? No. Will I overcome my fears and make it happen sooner rather than later? Yes, and I have you all to thank for that. Just wait and see. It will all come together! “I’m inspired to be a bit more daring”

July’s #VRxMusic Bonus! dance to these Violet Beats all month! The live music this month was so good! I saw a rising alternative band - PVRIS as well as a megastar - Ellie Goulding. Those two acts are at such different points in their careers. PVRIS played in a medium sized venue to a sold out crowd and Ellie closed her North American Delirium Tour at the legendary Madison Square Garden. Both of them have fans who absolutely love them and both of them are led by strong females. Their strength is something that I admire and I hope that I can immolate in my own life. I may not be the lead singer type, baring my soul to adoring

fans but I do have a blog where I share a bit of myself to you. It’s not the same but we all play our roles and I’m inspired to be a bit more daring in mine.

#VRxMusic Picks: • Ellie Goulding at Madison Square Garden • PVRIS at Webster Hall • Spotify x Game of Thrones (III) Which playlist is your fave? Tweet @violetrootsblog using the hashtag #VRxMusic and share what song you’ll be listening to! Have a question? Email me at hey@violetroots.com
