Letter from the Publisher

Iwould say that 30A has come alive with the arrival of March, but honestly it never really slowed down, at least from an event perspective. As we rolled into the new year it was apparent by traffic on 98 alone, that a combination of snowbirds and home owners in for the holidays whom never left, that the once seasonal 30A was becoming a year round home for many.

And for those choosing to stay through the “cold” months, the question of what to do was really not a question, but more of a decision of which to do. From what many consider to be the first large event of the year, 30A Songwriters Festival was amazing. I know I say this too often, but if you have never been, book your tickets for 2024 now. This is truly a one of a kind, four day extravaganza of great venues and incredible artist and entertainers.

Spring fashion shows, the loved Emerald Ball, and even a newbie to the local event scene, the Butler Bear Bash, have kept the VIP cameras busy. And if there is anything synonymous with spring in South Walton Co, it is wine festivals. This area, know for some of the best wine festivals in the country, kicked off the season with the fabulous, instantly sold-out 30A Wine Festival at Alys Beach. I am not sure which is more alluring, the setting or the wine but both equally fabulous. As I write this letter we approach another relatively new addition to the wine festival agenda, Soiree on the Bay. I anxiously await the hospitably of the Dugas family as they transform their beautiful bay-front estate into a magical weekend under the stars.

I could go on and on about events but I will let the pages of this issue of VIP 30A Magazine speak for itself. In addition to a plethora of events, this is also our annual Health & Beauty issue which is a long running tradition in all of our VIP’s around the South. This is our opportunity to feature the best medical and cosmetic professionals that 30A and South Walton has to offer. These businesses and the medical professionals behind the scenes have dedicated their lives to improving ours. From spas which elevate our overall well being, to cosmetics which keep us younger longer, to critical care providers, we are very blessed to have the level of providers which would rival many metropolitan areas. Of course, we have the advantage of leaving our favorite practice and being at the beach in 10! As Pierce Brosnan said “ that’s all the difference in the world.” To have a little fun and see who’s reading my nonsense, dinner for two at Pescado in Rosemary Beach on me, for the first email naming the movie from which I quoted.

I hope you enjoy this issue, our growing team on 30A has put in a lot of hours to bring this to fruition. We hope to see you in front of our cameras at upcoming wine festivals, chamber functions, fashion shows and more. We are the ones running around camera in hand - looking for the next photo op. Be sure to check our our two page calendar of events so you don’t miss a memory!

Hosted by the Hilton Sandestin Beach Golf Resort & Spa, the 5th Annual Hard Hats & High Heels luncheon has become a favorite for women in Walton County and surrounding areas who want to be involved and help make a difference. This sell out event is a fundraiser for Habitat for Humanity of Walton Co. Their mission is helping women, especially those who serve as head of their household, in finding affordable housing options which is a significant challenge in our community. Teresa Jones, Executive Director of Habit, is grateful for the generous support the community gives to this wonderful organization. For the attendees it’s more than just a lunch, its a chance to bond with other female leaders in the community with raffles, games and a silent auction that keeps everyone engaged and motivated!

The first annual Butler Bear Ball was held at the Churchill Oaks Clubhouse on Saturday, February 4th. With a gorgeous sunset view of the Bay, adults dined and danced under the stars to live music by Cadillac Willy. Just past the wall of champagne was an array of food stations (including sushi and a grilled cheese bar) and an extensive silent auction.  After bidding on items such as principal for a day and artwork made by the children, guests kicked up their heels in the Butler Bear Speakeasy. All proceeds from this event went to the PTO at Van R. Butler Elementary School.

TThe 30A Wine Festival held at Alys Beach was a weekend of festivities. Friday night was no exception as the organizers held their Bourbon, Beer & Butts event on Kelly Green. Beautiful weather created a perfect evening for tasting and socializing. Guest indulged in some of the country’s finest barbecue along with renowned bourbons and unique craft beers while live music entertained the crowd. 30A Wine Festival

The 30A Wine Festival held at Alys Beach is a five day extravaganza of exceptional wines and spirits paired with exquisite culinary creations. The week’s festivities began with an intimate dinner in the elegant setting of Caliza, followed by some of the Southeast’s most exquisite oysters accompanied by champagne and live music on the Plaza. Hand crafted tequila cocktails complimented a four course dinner set in the enchanting canopy of Papilio Park, a welcome addition to this year’s festivities. And of course, crowd favorite Beer Bourbon and Butts as featured followed the trendy mixology seminar on Friday.

Saturday’s Grand Tasting along South Charles Street, considered the centerpiece of the 30A Wine Festival, was blessed with beautiful spring-like weather as attendees to the sold out event enjoyed wines from around the world. Sunday rounded out the week with the Gospel Brunch followed by one of the most beloved events of the festival, Rose & Croquet. Kudos to the Alys Beach staff for creating such an inviting event for its homeowners, neighbors and friends to experience.

Harbor Rats Check Presentation

TO SANDESTIN FOUNDATION FOR KIDS

In February, the Sandestin Foundation for Kids was presented a $40,000 check from the efforts made months ago by a local organization who call themselves the Harbor Rats. The recipient of this generous donation was founded in 2011 by the owners of Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort, the Becnel Family. Tom Becnel was present to receive the donation on behalf of the Sandestin Foundation for Kids and had encouraging words about the direction and accomplishments of the Foundation and its positive impact on our local communities.

Sandestin Foundation for Kids is a local charity helping children in need, both locally and abroad. The structure of the organization allows for funds to be gifted to children and families quickly in the event of a tragedy. Sandestin Foundation for Kids goal is to provide support immediately, when it is needed most to children throughout the community, and to ultimately make a meaningful difference.

The Foundation supports causes and organizations which can help positively impact many aspects of these children’s lives including health and economic issues. The Sandestin Foundation for Kids, a taxdeductible 501(c)(3) governed by a Board of Trustees, receives its funding from The Becnel Family combined with the support of Sandestin employees and guests.

This donation by he Harbor Rats was made possible by the success of the 4th Annual Charity Golf Classic this past fall. This group of local businessmen began meeting at Harbor Cigars in Destin years ago. These community-minded gentleman talked about everything form personal issues, to politics and religion and created an environment of support and accountability, not to mention some great stories told. Four years ago, the group decided that golf would be another great avenue to become closer and the Harbor Rats Charity Golf Tournament was born.

said Craig Collins, and that they have. In addition to the $40,000 donated to Sandestin Foundation for Kids, a $10,000 donation was also made to Alaqua Animal Refuge due to the efforts of this fun loving group of golfers. Their goal is to continue to grow these donations year after year!

“We wanted to give back to the community that has supported us over the years”

Wells Vision and Laser Eye Center

Dr. Kevin Wells has been practicing Optometry for almost 24 years. He is a Board-CertifiedOptometric Physician, internationally published author, Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry, and Diplomate of the American Board of Optometry. He was also in the first class of Optometriststrained to perform laser eye surgery for the treatment of certain eye conditions.Originally from Oklahoma, he and his family spent many summers vacationing in Destin. Eleven years ago, they decided to make it their permanent home. Wells Vision and Laser Eye Center is a full-serviceeye care practice that utilizesthe most advanced technology to perform eye exams, manage eye disease, and treat eye injuries and infections. They also have a large selection of designer frames and sunglasses to choose from. If glasses aren’t your thing, you can be fit into contact lenses or have LASIK performed in their state-of-the-art LASIK suite. LASIK is performed by world renowned eye surgeon Dr. Bret Fisher from Panama City. Dr. Fisher has performed over 40,000 procedures and has been involved with numerous FDA investigational studies. The consult to determine if you are a candidate for LASIK is free of charge. Even if you only need reading glasses, there is an option to eliminate those as well. Macular degeneration, glaucoma, diabetic eye disease, dry eye disease, and cataracts are justsome of the eye diseases that are managed at Wells Vision and Laser Eye Center.

The latest technological addition is the Optical Coherence Tomographer with Angiography. This instrument takes a CT scan of the retina and canmeasure blood flow without the need of injecting contrast dye into the body. Another machine is able to measure the functionality of the nerves within the eye and between the eye and the brain. This technology allows Dr. Wells to determine if an eye disease is progressing before structural damage in the eye occurs. Macular degeneration is the leading cause of blindness in the United States. Dr. Wells has a device called AdaptDX that is 92% accurate in determining if a healthy eye is at risk for developing macular degeneration in the next three years. Intensive Pulse Light (IPL) is used to alleviate dry eyes. It also tightens the skin and reduces finelines, age spots, and rosacea.

Dr. Wells says, “The most rewarding part of what I do is helping people see their best. Vision is our most used senseso it’s great to see patients get excited when they can see more clearly. My favorite clinic day is the day after LASIK surgery when patients are seeing for the first time in years without glasses or contacts.”

Dr. Natalie Pelly recently joined the practice. She is a graduate of University of Alabama, Birmingham College of Optometry. She has an interest in specialty contact lens fittings and children. A former local, she and her husband Chris are glad to be back to the Emerald Coast.

When not working, Dr. Wells enjoys spending time and traveling with his two daughters. He is a CrossFit enthusiast that placed 103rdin the world for his age division in the CrossFit Open this year.

Tips for Taking Better Care of Your Skin, On and Off the Beach

Let’s face it, we’ve all seen those people who look as if they’ve spent one (or 100) too many long days lounging by the pool, basking along the beach or navigating the waters searching for fish and fun. And while having that just right sunkissed glow can be a rather attractive asset, no one wants to appear ten years older with skin like leather just to scream, “I live at the beach!”

1 Use Sunscreen

In our modern culture most of us have come to understand that if our skin doesn’t look healthy, in many ways we don’t look healthy. Even more importantly than appearance, however, is the real-world knowledge that protecting and taking care of our skin is vastly important to our overall longevity. And we now know that this doesn’t just mean when you’re 40, or 50, or 70 years old.

It means taking care of your skin all the time. Because the truth is, most of the damage manifested in skin problems isn’t due to what you do today, as much as is it what you did 10, 15, or 25 years ago. That notwithstanding, ‘It’s never too late to start putting more emphasis on skin health, and following some of these simple suggestions can certainly make for a positive difference now and down the road.

Yes, I know you know that. But, do you?’Most of us have been lectured about sunscreen until someone was blue in the face. Yet, strangely, we still get red because we don’t always use it. Go figure. By now we’ve all read a lot of conflicting information on good and bad sunscreen use, along with what strength to use and what those numbers do and don’t “really” mean. The bottom line is, while using good sunscreen is great, using anything is likely better than using nothing at all –especially on those days in the direct sun for hours. You should apply sunscreen almost religiously whenever you’re outside for over an hour, and you should definitely be reapplying every two hours when you’re at the beach, pool, or just working in the yard for many hours in a day. All sunscreens are formulated and manufactured to protect wearers against UVB rays, which are the primary cause of sunburns, sun damage, and most skin cancers, however UVA rays –which we seem to hear less about—are also causes of wrinkles, sunspots, skin cancers, and overall premature and unattractive aging of the skin.

Because you need to protect yourself against both types of these sun derived culprits, most dermatologist and physicians recommend that their patients (and the rest of us sun lovers too) procure a good SPF 50, or higher, broad-spectrum sunscreen. It’s also worth noting, that especially for beach or pool days, one uses a formula that states it is water-resistant. Be prepared to reapply after taking a dip in the gulf or pool though... not even the best brands will stay on through all those saltwater splashes and belly flops.

2 Use the right soaps and cleansers for YOUR skin

One of the best things you can do to protect your skin -particularly your face- from sun damage is to takecare of your skin in other ways too. For starters this means using the right soaps and cleansers for your skin type, and the climate, and even season. For instance, most dermatologist will tell you that one of the best soaps for your face and skin is simply good old fashion white Dove.

Yep, even better across the majority of skin types than expensive brand name cleansers that cost ten to twenty times the investment in that one bar of Dove.

3 Hydrate your body to hydrate your skin

We all hear so much about drinking enough water, and the importance of staying hydrated, but the simple truth is... well, it is a simple truth. Most all of us (somewhat dependent on body size and composition) need to get a minimum of 60 to 150 ounces of water per day. And, most people don’t do this. Back to the simple common sense aspect of skin care: if your entire body is dehydrated then your skin is too. What I’ve found that works is simply keeping a 12 to 20 ounce glass bottle of cool purified water in the refrigerator (at home, work, or a cooler in your car) and making yourself chug it the number of times a day to get the amount you need. The general rule is ½ to 1 ounce of water daily, for every pound of body weight, with the variation in ounces being based largely on how much you are using or losing in various activities and climate conditions.

Writer Bio:

4 Watch alcohol content when outdoors in the sun and heat

I’m not going to lie. I like a big cold beer (or five) as much as anyone I know. However, I think we’ve all established that alcohol is a dehydrant. So, if you have a tendency, like me, to load up a cooler of your favorite libations when heading out for a day on the sand or water just make sure you remember to slam those 60 to 150 ounces of water you need in between the other tastier drinks. It’s also a good idea to limit daily drinking to a few drinks a day… okay, until the weekend if you must. I’m not telling you what to do or how to live your life. However, we’ve all seen that guy who drinks a six pack a night, and how does he look? Not the best skin, right? And probably a good 15 years older. Yeah, not good for your skin… see how easy this is?

5 Get your nutrients... Inside and out

Remember that whole, “you are what you eat” adage? Well, somewhat unfortunately, it’s mostly true! A whole lot of things aren’t particularly good for you, so lets skip that list and just go to what is specifically good for your skin, when it comes to what you eat. Think vitamin C rich foods, including fresh fruits and vegetables that are rich in polyphenols and beta-carotene. Things like soybeans, nuts and seeds, oily fish, and even coffee can be helpful in keeping healthy glowing skin from the inside out. As for giving your skin -especially your face- a dose of nutrients, you can’t go wrong by using a good vitamin C serum to help nourish your skin and keep that youthful glow all year long. Vitamin C also goes a long way in helping your skin heal after sun damage, as well as, lightening sun spots that were caused by too much sun exposure.

Delaney McConnell + Chase McInnis The Henderson

Delaney McConnell, a native of Nashville, and Chase McInnis, from Niceville, met while she was visiting her family in Seagrove Beach during the spring of 2021. A long distance friendship soon turned into a first date at the Red Bar. With her best friend tagging along on the first few dates, Chase quickly gained approval. Delaney says she knew Chase was the one after her family had a health crisis early in their courting during which Chase dropped everything to be there for help and support. Delaney says Chase’s heart was so pure and intentional it would have been hard to not fall in love with him. The relationship progressed leading to a proposal from Chase on Labor Day of 202 at the lot he purchased in Santa Rosa Beach. He had a sign that said,

Chase had tricked Delaney into thinking they were having dinner with her family with photos to be taken after. The newly engaged couple celebrated with their families at the Henderson that evening. The ceremony took place on the Grand Lawn of The Henderson on November 12,2022 with 175 guests in attendance. Delaney’s vision for the wedding was that of romance and elegance. She quickly new the green space and arbor to be filled with dangling flowers was exactly what she had envisioned for her special day. Flowers and candles were a significant part of the vision which she accomplished. Her flower colors consisted of mostly white, peach, and dusty rose with subtle touches of brighter pinks, yellow and greenery. Her bridesmaids wore soft grey dresses in chiffon, silk and velvet. The brides dress was silk with floral and beading embellishments on the bottom of the gown and throughout the train. She fell in love with the cathedral train and customized over the shoulder sleeves with the same embellishments to match the gown.

The groom wore a black tux with velvet loafers. The bride’s brother, Kirk, was their officiant, and he included friends and family throughout the ceremony. The reception, held at The Henderson, was catered by the Henderson Beach Resort chefs with entertainment by Big Night Dynamite. The first dance for the newlyweds was to “This Too Shall Last” by Anderson East. Delaney exited in a personalized jean-jacket with her new last name on the back while guest popped silver streamers and threw flower petals at them. The couple ultimately settled in Destin after they honeymooned to Excellence Oyster Bay in Falmouth, Jamaica.

Bringing America Good Times From Stages to Schools and Beyond

If you’ve ever seen a Velcro Pygmies show live, they really need no introduction. Once you’re a fan you know what you’re getting each and every show, and you simply want more of it. If, on the other hand, you haven’t seen this talented and entertaining foursome, then let me explain just exactly who, and what, they are. The world-famous Velcro Pygmies specialize in taking their fans on a journey to a place and space in time when hair was big, pants were tight, screaming was singing, and in the illustrious words of KISS’s Gene Simmons, “If it’s too loud. You’re too old”.

The Pygmies --as their fans around the country affectionately refer to them— operate from a time and stage when a twominute guitar or drum solo was what fans wanted to see and hear. And, not only have Cameron Flener, Chase West, Max War, and Chris Eddins managed to keep those fans, they’re still making new ones, from college campuses to nightclubs to high school auditoriums and corporate event stages, all over this great country.

Because that’s what The Velcro Pygmies do. They take your everyday, average grind, full of hardships, tears, smiles, and the ups and downs of the roller coaster of life, and they add a pinch of adrenaline, a dose of testosterone, a little sprinkle of wildness, and they shake it up, turning those 60 or 120 minutes that you’re with them into an escape. After all, isn’t that what real, unadulterated rock is really all about?

The Pygmies formed in Louisville Kentucky, playing night clubs, college campuses, and frat parties, primarily in the Southeast, over 25 years ago. The band has managed to not only maintain their fan base, but to build on it over the past two decades. When you go to a Velcro Pygmies show in Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Ohio, Texas, New Hampshire --or anywhere else across the country they regularly play-- you will see a crowd made up of 40 and 50 somethings that became fans in their own college days, as well as 19 and 25 year olds that have more recently started following the Pygmies and their brand of hairband showmanship --complete with big hair, glitter bombs and long guitar solos.

Giving Back Through Reach & Teach

As if the great showmanship, big sound and lighting, and fun-loving fans aren’t enough, five years ago these rockers made the leap from the clubs to the classrooms, in a remarkable endeavor to reach and teach America’s future. They don’t just want to entertain; they want to give back by helping prepare the next generation for the one stage that’s even larger than rock and roll: Life!

Reach and Teach is a unique program, free of charge to the schools and students who are part of it. The program is facilitated through individual school systems and high schools, built upon a nine-week curriculum in which students are given the opportunity to literally plan and execute a concert that takes place at their high-school or middle school; by The Velcro Pygmies, or one of five other artists that Cameron Flener and his co-founding partner in Reach and Teach, Executive Director April Clark, have handpicked to be a part of the growing educational program.

Isat down with Flener, over lunch, to talk a little more about this program firsthand. Though he’s made a living through rock music, Cam is, in my opinion, as much an entrepreneur as a great performer. He’s extremely well spoken, intuitive and insightful, and as such was quick to point out that Reach and Teach isn’t about rock and roll music as much as it is about truly giving something back, creating a legacy of sorts and being involved in something that is much larger than himself or his band.

Talking with co-founder April Clark, she explained it this way, “A rock concert provides the perfect vehicle for condensing all the aspects of operating a business into a limited time frame. Students learn about budgeting, marketing, public relations, web design, audio visual, logistics, and most importantly are able to analyze the results of their event once it’s over.”

Cameron went on to say, “Reach and Teach students are hands on in doing everything from deciding on the venue (normally on the school grounds, and during regular school hours) to helping the band set up and tear down the stage. They truly learn what it takes to plan an event from concept to fruition, how to make money for their school or school related fundraiser and have fun along the way. All with something that excites and interests them.”

Over the five years I’ve been familiar with Reach and Teach, I have had the opportunity to hear from educators, school administrators, and parents about the merits of this program. Some of the stories are remarkable in their positive impacts and life changing alterations: Students who discovered and honed their skills as photographers, sound engineers, sponsorship salespeople, and even became musicians, writers and singers after taking part in Reach and Teach.

For more information about The Velcro Pygmies follow them on Facebook or IG. To learn more about Reach and Teach visit them at ReachandTeach.rocks and follow them on Facebook at ReachandTeach.

“The vision that April and I have created for Reach and Teach is to take this program all over the entire country. We want to help these students in realizing what the utilization of real-world life skills are about. These are soft skills we are teaching. The things that we all need to know; how to budget, how to present or pitch potential sponsors, how to sell their vision to others. Reach and Teach is about empowering these young people to believe in themselves and their abilities to make things happen.”

ith our home maintenance program, we offer quarterly inspections to check windows and door seals, roof and aerial inspections done by drone, roof boot and crawl space inspections, thermal imaging, plumbing inspections, HVAC inspections, coil cleaning annually for all units, and so much more.

Essentially, we’re a one stop shop for the maintenance of your home.

Casey Beathard Nashville, TN

To Whom It May Concern, Southern Grace Restoration, Hank & Bull Chappell were hands down, our favorite restoration company we've ever used.

met on March 8 at our beach home to discuss our project, I was really impressed with your friendliness, professionalism, and clear interest in helping us refresh our beautiful home. I particularly appreciated your willingness to “cut to the chase” and not waste my wife’s and my time. You helped us understand a couple of tricky issues as it related to repainting our home and our stucco walls. You pointed out some areas of our house and walls that might end up being issues, but gave me confidence that you would determine the best and most economical way to address them. Which you ultimately did!

We have been building houses, remodeling & doing projects for over 25 years as a family and have never had a company be so efficient with time and a budget.

As you know, we met with and got bids from, two other reputable painters in the area. While they both gave me reasonable quotes, I clearly did not come away with the confidence in them that I had in you.

My wife particularly appreciated your advice on our paint colors and whether or not to retain our shutters and screens. As you know, she, and all of us, are ecstatic with our joint decisions. I appreciated your calls and pictures when you ran into some issues with the deterioration of our stucco walls. More importantly, you limited the costs of addressing those issues.

Hank’s patience, knowledge, honor and professionalism never wavered even as we made changes and obstacles presented themselves. Especially working long distance, he went above and beyond to meet and defeat every challenge.

I will always remember and appreciate your response when I asked when you expected to start and complete our project. It was Saturday afternoon. You asked when we were leaving, to which I said Sunday afternoon.

Your response: “We will be here Monday and there will be more ladders and men on your home by Wednesday than you can imagine.” You continued on to say “We will complete the job as quickly as possible, depending only on the weather. By Wednesday, you were sending me pictures and giving me text updates. Net, net, you completed the job quicker than we had expected and at the costs you had quoted.

He made promises that he kept and did exactly what he said he would do. These are great people first, great contractors second. They deal with subs and a crew that were just as responsible, kind and gifted n craftsmanship. We are grateful for The Chappell's and “Southern Grace” and our new relationship. We are more than satisfied with every aspect of the well-done job. We will absolutely use them every chance we can.

The final touch was when you suggested I withhold a portion of my payment until my wife and I were able to come look at the house in person. Obviously, when we arrived several weeks later, the job was perfect!

Board of Directors Installation & Awards Gala 2023

Women’s Council of REALTORS® Emerald Coast 2023 Board of Directors Installation and Awards Masquerade Gala was a night of glitz and glamour. Held at the Emerald Grande on December 8, 2022, this black-tie event celebrates the previous board for their commitment and achievements over the past year, installation of the new 2023 board and member voted awards ceremony.

As guests entered, they were greeted with a wall of champagne, passed hors d’oeuvres and an open bar. Inside the ballroom, it was a world of wonder and amazement as the new board went all out. The table décor was dawned with personalized centerpieces, accented with handmade Italian crepe paper flowers. The passing of the gavel is always an emotional moment, always accompanied by a meaningful speech from both Past and Present Presidents. Once the festivities were over everyone gambled (for a good cause) and danced the night way.
