Letter from the Publisher

As I write this letter, it does not seem possible we are publishing the 2022 Holiday Issue of VIP 30A Magazine. Maybe it’s the return of many favorite events that has kept us busy these last few months, but there is no denying that time is truly flying by. Speaking of events, wow did they come back with vengeance. After a few challenging years for our non profits and civic organizations, I believe the number of wonderful functions to attended has now surpassed 2019 levels. Unfortunately we do not always appreciate what we have until something is taken away, like our freedom to gather with friends, co-workers and family. Needless to say, the demand to do exactly that has never been greater so get out and enjoy these upcoming weeks as the calendar is full of exciting things to attend!

As we close out the remainder of the year with the upcoming holiday season, we take time to give thanks for blessings in our lives, especially at Thanksgiving and throughout Christmas. This time gives me pause to reflect back nearly ten years when I launched VIP Destin Magazine. Now with a full year of publishing VIP 30A Magazine behind us, I am so thankful for the many friendships and memories both of these magazines have brought into my life over the last decade, as I anxiously await to see what the future holds.

I hope to see many of you at holiday gatherings and New Year’s Eve celebrations!

Happy Holidays!

During this holiday season, we wish you all the best.

Caring & Sharing of South Walton filled the afternoon with fashion and fun Sunday, October 16, from 12:30pm to 3:30pm. The 2nd Annual Fall Fashion Show and Luncheon, presented by Emerald Coast Hospice, was held at the picturesque Gardens and Gallery of Monet Monet in Grayton Beach.

During the event, guests enjoyed a fashion show, lunch, silent auction, DJ and photo booth and more!

Volunteers and supporters of the organization walked the runway modeling outfits made up entirely of items donated from the Caring & Sharing Boutique. These items were for sale after the Fashion Show in the popup boutique curated specifically for the Fashion Show and pulled directly from the Thrift Store.

All funds raised at the Annual Fashion Show allow Caring & Sharing of South Walton to continue providing food, utility, prescription, and basic need assistance to residents of South Walton County.

This years 6th Annual Harvest Wine & Food Festival welcomed a sold out crowd. Held at Watercolor’s Cerulean Park, the event was blessed with beautiful, crisp fall weather on this Saturday in late October. The event began on Thursday with celebrity chef and winemaker dinners along 30A and continued throughout the weekend followed by the Grand Tasting on Saturday. Sunday wrapped up these festivities with the Agave Road Trip Brunch.

The organization behind this wonderful event is the Destin Charity Wine Auction Foundation which donates to many Northwest Florida charities. Founded in 2005, this organization which has been recognized by Wine Spectator Magazine, has donated more than $25 million helping children in need throughout our area. This is possible through the exceptional wine and culinary events that have become a favorite not only among locals, but regionally as well!

My wife particularly appreciated your advice on our paint colors and whether or not to retain our shutters and screens. As you know, she, and all of us, are ecstatic with our joint decisions. I appreciated your calls and pictures when you ran into some issues with the deterioration of our stucco walls. More importantly, you limited the costs of addressing those issues.

I will always remember and appreciate your response when I asked when you expected to start and complete our project. It was Saturday afternoon. You asked when we were leaving, to which I said Sunday afternoon. Your response: “We will be here Monday and there will be more ladders and men on your home by Wednesday than you can imagine.” You continued on to say “We will complete the job as quickly as possible, depending only on the weather. By Wednesday, you were sending me pictures and giving me text updates. Net, net, you completed the job quicker than we had expected and at the costs you had quoted. Alys Beach Crafted presented a weekend of events in Alys Beach, which included a gathering of renowned craftspeople from around the country sharing the process, the inspiration, and the product of their craft. Crafted sprung from 2019’s successful debut of Firkin Fête, with the goal to tell the stories of crafted beverages, culinary experiences, artistry, and workmanship.

Friday night featured the original Firkin Fête, a unique tasting experience as firkins of beer created by local and regional breweries were on tap. The firkins, each an 11-gallon keg, are unique in that no one, including the brewers themselves, can know what the final product will taste like until the firkins are tapped for the event. Altered Five Blues Band entertained the crowd this elegant evening on the lawn. Saturday followed with Spirited Soirée, featuring craft cocktails created by top mixologists from all over the country, partnered with craft distilleries and complimented with bites from the best culinary teams in the Southeast!

Just in time for Halloween, much merriment was had at the annual Boos, Brews & Bingo event in Rosemary Beach on October 27. The spooky spirit was certainly felt as revelers dressed as ghouls; pirates; little red riding hood and the big bad wolf; castaways from Gilligan’s Island; the squid squad; Elvis; Greek gods and goddesses; and singin’ in the rain characters, among others, as they gathered in the Town Hall to play 10 games of oldfashioned bingo. Small bites were provided by Amici’s / Amigo 30A, brews by Odd Pelican Beer, and wines by Wine World.

Presented by Rosemary Beach Foundation, the event benefited the Emerald Coast Children’s Advocacy Center and their provision of critical intervention services to end child abuse in our community. Prizes were awarded for best costumes for group and individual and most original. Raffle tickets and a cash jackpot also added to the excitement, along with gift prizes from individual game sponsors including Rosemary Beach, Disco, Regions Bank, The Pearl RB, Coastal South Walton-Miriam Dillon, Realtor, Seacrest Sundries, The Rosemary Beach Inn, and Silver Sands Premium Outlets.

TREES on the COAST BringingThroughBeautification Conservation to

30A and Beyond

The conservation based 501c3 has been planting, planning, educating, and adding to the beauty of Okaloosa and Walton counties since its formation in 2015, and continues to grow in the scale of projects the nonprofit undertakes. During the same time, TOTC has expanded the geographical area covered in gifting our organization’s time, effort and financial resources to the beach communities that are home to thousands and a getaway haven to over ten million beach lovers from around the world, every single year. I first became familiar with Trees On The Coast before moving to Destin in 2017, through an introduction to the nonprofit’s original founder, Allen French, by a then business partner of mine, Shannon Howell, who was an original board member of TOC. Having grown up on a farm in rural Mississippi, with hundreds of acres of trees all around me, I was immediately intrigued by the group’s mission. So much, in fact, that I did a feature story on the organization’s efforts and impact in a nationally sold newsstand travel magazine that Howell and I were partners in, along with Ryan Olin and Memphis based developer Bill Hagerman. That interview with Trees’ (as it is affectionately referred to by its board members and many volunteers) founder, Allen French, led to my being invited to join the TOTC board of directors back in 2017. I accepted and have been on the board since, seeing a lot of positive changes during the past five years, thanks in no small part to the generous donations of time, knowledge and resources of other likeminded locals who believe in our mission.

Since its creation in 2015 Trees On The Coast has orchestrated numerous small and large scale projects, including planting over forty mature palm trees along both sides of Holiday Isle; planting over a hundred live oaks throughout the 30A area’s historic County Road 393 cemetery; honoring fallen soldiers of a tragic 2015 helicopter crash with a planting and ceremony along Destin’s Airport Road, planting young trees along the lakes of Scenic Highway 30-A, as well as numerous other plantings across South Walton and Okaloosa counties. Many of these plantings have been in conjunction with city and county services, involving significant work behind the scenes, cutting through the governmental red tape necessary to make them come to fruition. I often joke with people who ask about the work we do in conjunction with government entities, saying, “you’d be surprised how hard it is to give away trees.”

Jump ahead to 2020, when Trees’ original founder decided to make a move back to the Atlanta area. Our board was left with the hard decision of who to nominate to be our executive director, taking the helm and leading us into the future, while maintaining our founder’s original mission and expanding on the scope of projects and beautification we could grow into.

As the solution to this dilemma, our board unanimously appointed our then youngest and newest board member, Bobby Wagner, to be our new executive director. I would have to say the same traits that my fellow board members and I saw in Bobby are many of the same traits that I believe will enable him to excel, direct and flourish as Destin’s new mayor.

Our board members are local leaders from various fields: Myra Williams, Denise Song, Bekah Manley, Jerry Sullivan, Shane Cannon, founder Allen French, Will Estell (myself) and Executive Director, Bobby Wagner. As the most recent chapter of our Trees On The Coast story has taken shape, the board continues to brainstorm, search out opportunities, and work diligently to plan, prepare and take on new projects across the two county area.

In addition to the scope of work TOTC previously took part in, Wagner --being the solution oriented forward thinker he is—has also led a charge into other forms of conservation, including Trees On The Coast being involved in beach cleanups and the cleanup of trash along major area roadways. Projects include cleanup days along as Hwy. 98, around the popular Destin harbor and nearby waterways, as well as spearheading additional education programs at local elementary, middle, and high schools within our area.

In the words of Wagner, “Trees On The Coast is guided by three principles: planting trees, preserving trees, and educating future generations to adopt a mindset of conservation and beautification. We are here to help with this for all of the people who call Northwest Florida’s Gulf Coast ‘home’ and our mission will continue to be that of making these beach communities increasingly inviting places to live and visit, for everyone.”

My friend and fellow TOTC original board member, Jerry Sullivan of C21 Blue Marlin Pelican Real Estate, had this to say about the work of the organization. “Conservation is critical to the health of Okaloosa’s and Walton County’s environment. By preserving the existing tree canopy in our area, we create an environmentally sound practice that hopefully can and will continue to help preserve the beauty of the Northwest Florida Gulf Coast for many generations to come. That, in a nutshell, or acorn I guess you could say [laughing] is why our board and volunteers do what we do.”

Sound interesting? Volunteers are always needed and appreciated, whether they’re digging holes, planting trees, organizing events, or helping us clean the beaches and highways of these beautiful communities. Simply visit us online at TreesOnTheCoast.com or on Facebook @ Treesonthecoast, and get involved firsthand.

If you live anywhere along the beach communities of Destin, South Walton, Scenic 30A or Miramar Beach, you’ve probably seen some of the work done over the past seven years by my fellow board members, volunteers and the generous donors of Trees On The Coast.

Will Estell is a writer, editor, producer, and entrepreneur with over 500 published features and numerous online articles in an array of genres. Over the past 25 years Will has been instrumental in founding twelve new magazine titles from concept to fruition, as well as serving as editor in chief for numerous others. Originally from the backwoods of rural Mississippi, Will is a father of three who splits his time between Destin and Navarre, along with his wife, ABC 3 news anchor, Laura Hussey. You can follow him at Facebook.com/Will.Estell or on IG at: IfWillUsedInsta.

“We have the gloves, bags, tongs, rakes, and the locations that need your time and dedication. All that’s missing is you,” says Mayor Bobby Wagner.

GALLION’S Restaurant & Cocktail Lounge hosted Phipps Family Cellars for a Meet & Greet and Bottle Signing event with Founder and Winemaker, Andy Phipps. This was a rare opportunity to learn about Phipps Family Cellars (PFC), which was founded in 2004 with a desire to create small lot wines from coveted vineyards for memorable occasions. In 12 harvests, Phipps Family Cellars has grown from producing 350 cases of Zinfandel to over 3,500 cases of various varietals annually. In 2007, they added the STATUS QUO label (their homage to André Tchelistcheff), and, in 2015, their third label, the CALIFORNIA Wine Company was introduced to offer everyday-priced wines.

Guests enjoyed this opportunity to meet founder and winemaker for Phipps Family Wines, Andy Phipps, a third-generation Californian who got bit by the wine bug during a semester abroad in France. Two short years later and after a brief career at Coca-Cola, Andy met the Cellar Master at Beaulieu Vineyard (BV), during one of his many day trips to the Napa Valley, and was offered a position as a General Winery Worker. It was this position that would lead to the knowledge and understanding of the entire winemaking process.

Seeing Red Wine Festival®, the highly anticipated SEASIDE® wine experience, returned for its 30th anniversary this fall in the iconic location along Florida’s Scenic Highway 30A. On November 10th-13th, 2022, this year’s event featured winemakers, chefs, live music, and more with the picture-perfect New Urbanism town as its backdrop.

The Seeing Red Wine Festival® has been recognized as one of the “Top 10 Can’t-Miss Fall Wine Festivals” by Fodor’s Travel. Since its inception in 1991, Seeing Red established a reputation for bringing premier wine and culinary offerings to the area, hosting world-class vintners and acclaimed chefs, all in the simple, elegant style that is SEASIDE®’s signature. After a pause during the pandemic, the 2022 event marks three decades since the inaugural festival debut.

Has it really been 8 yrs already?! It’s crazy to think that Idyll Hounds has been brewing beer down on Serenoa for 8 years, and were so stoked to be celebrating once again with everyone on October 8th, 2022 from 1:00 pm - 6:00 pm. Guests enjoyed an afternoon of live music, multiple beer releases, great food, guest breweries and more!

Like each year, drinks were included with tickets, and VIPs had an hour early (at noon) to have some amazing limited release products dropping. General Admission included a shirt, glass, sticker and unlimited sample pours all day long.

A Designated Driver ticket was also available for purchase, for those wanting access to the days festivities with a wristband that will not allow for you to drink while on the premise, and a Houndfest t-shirt, making it a fun outing for everyone!

CHARITY GOLF CLASSIC AT BURNT PINE GOLF CLUB

The Ascension Sacred Heart Foundation held its 2022 Charity Golf Classic on September 23 at Burnt Pine Golf Club in Sandestin. Overall this year’s event raised $218,145 for the new CT scanner at Ascension Sacred Heart Emerald Coast. Including $80,000 in sponsorships and $66,261 worth of in-kind support. Since 2002, this event has raised more than $3 million for various expansion efforts at Ascension Sacred Heart Emerald Coast.

A total of 27 teams (108 players) were in the tournament. Players enjoyed on-course food and beverages provided by Hunter’s Chicken & Burgers, Culver’s, Kombi Keg, Lewis Bear, Distillery 98, and Driftwood Wine & Spirits. The Backsliders provided live music during the afternoon to entertain those who came out for a Bubbly Walkabout, which featured modeled outfits by Today’s Boutique and artwork by Jeannie Maddox.

Special thanks to the presenting sponsors, Grand Boulevard, Howard Group, and Silver Sands Premium Outlets for making the event possible.

5th annual

The 5th annual Gathering in the Garden was held on November 11th at Point Washington Preserve and hosted by Be Generous, Inc. The Gathering in the Garden is an event benefiting the Yellow House 24 month recovery program providing care and support for women in crisis.

The Yellow House offers a Christ centered 24 month residential recovery home where women are able to find a safe place and recover their true identity and purpose.  The goal is to remove them from the crisis situations which can leave them vulnerable to violence, homelessness, abuse, relapse, or sexual exploitation. Be Generous, Inc. has worked in the community for the past 12 years and found a gap in our community. Their hope is to help bring some resolve.
