MAYOR
PANEPINTO

ity politics are founded on the backs of people; and for the politics of cities to benefit the people they are supposed to serve, they must be in the hands of individuals who watch out for the good of all. For mayor of Hammond Peter Panepinto, that dedication to the people of the city and their needs is precisely what drove him to enter the political sphere in the first place. “I love my city and wanted to do everything I could to make it better,” says Panepinto, who began to follow local politics as a 20 year-old and felt that his experience in business would make him a good asset to the city. Before running for mayor, he worked for the city as the Building Official and then as Director of Administration.
Elected in the fall of 2014, Panepinto took office on January 1, 2015, and has plans to run for reelection next year in the fall of 2022. The past seven years have proven why the people of Hammond elected him. “I have a strong work ethic and a history of making good decisions,” Panepinto says. “I don’t like sitting in the office. I like being in the field, helping on a job site, and working with city staff to make good decisions. 14
SOCIAL NORTHSHORE
Whether pouring concrete, filling sandbags, or picking up food plates, I want to be working alongside my employees.” Naturally, the years of his term have faced challenges, but Panepinto has navigated them. “Speeding up the process of government is my biggest challenge,” he asserts. “There have been many times that I’ve been told to be more patient as the process works itself out. I’ve learned that some of the process is intentionally slow to allow more people to have a voice, to gain more consensus, and to increase transparency; but sometimes, it’s just too slow when getting approvals or trying to get a project off the ground.” Despite those challenges, there have been many triumphs during Panepinto’s time in office. “Working with the city employees and leaders of Hammond to bring in Medline was something that I’m incredibly proud of,” he says. “This was an extremely controversial project, given its location; but already, they have proven themselves to be partners in growing our city. It’s a big company with a big promise of jobs. It’s this type of distribution company that we’ve been recruiting to come to Hammond; and when so many businesses were closing their doors during COVID, we were excited to be opening a new one.
“I don’t like sitting in the office. I like being in the field, helping on a job site, and working with city staff to make good decisions.”
Once the construction is complete and the facility is fully functioning, I think we’ll look back on this as an incredibly positive turning point. Also, we’ve built a new public pool, made several upgrades to Hammond’s sewer treatment system, and made some of the largest investments in city parks. Another area I’ve focused on is education by expanding the city’s afterschool program, enhancing the city’s summer camp, and having an annual backpack and school supply giveaway. We also brought back the Hammond Airshow for 2021 after a 26-year hiatus, and we continued Hammond’s reign as the cleanest city in Louisiana, winning the highest score overall.” As many wins as the administration saw, however, they could never have prepared for the devastation of COVID. Even so, Panepinto helped guide the city of Hammond through it. “Communicating with employees and residents was our priority during the last year,” he says. “We tried to make sure everyone had the most current
information and opportunities—whether updates from the governor, grant and loan applications, or testing and vaccination locations. We wanted everyone to feel like we were in it together and that we’d come out of it stronger together.” As he reaches the end of this term and sets his eye on re-election, Panepinto still has some plans that he’d like to complete. “Since I’m a builder, I’m dedicated to improving Hammond’s infrastructure—especially its parks and aging sewer infrastructure,” he says. “I’m also always looking for ways to make government easier, faster, and more accessible.” As Hammond looks toward the future, so does Panepinto; and what he sees for his city is possibility and progress. He’s a mayor who loves his people and his people love him back.

IMPACT & GIVE BACK
T
he end of life can be a stressful time for the individuals facing their death as well as for their families. Knowing that nothing more can be done, and the rest is just seeking comfort and release from pain, countless individuals enter hospice care in their final days—but that kind of care can be expensive and seemingly impossible for many who desperately need it. Filling the gap and providing hope to those in this situation, the Hospice Foundation of the South opened the Hospice House in 2014 as the answer to a question that should never have to be asked: How can we pay?
“Our official mission statement is ‘The Hospice Foundation of the South is dedicated to providing resources for medical and emotional care for terminally ill patients and their families.’ Our actual mission goes far beyond that,” says Director Miranda Parker. That actual mission is to provide terminally ill patients who are in a preferred hospice program with the Hospice Foundation a place to stay during their final days—at no cost. Proper care is priority, so caregivers are in the home 24 hours a day to provide for the needs of the residents, who are enrolled into the preferred hospice care programs because of their need for a place to live while dying. Naturally, The Hospice House welcomes and encourages family members to visit, offering a pull-out bed in each room to accommodate overnight guest stays.
A HOME FOR CARE BY LIESEL SCHMIDT
The number of individuals helped through the Hospice House in the last seven years is incredible. “To date, we have welcomed 278 patients and their families to take care of at end of life,” says Parker. “Prior to opening the Hospice House, the Hospice Foundation often supported indigent patients in the form of paying for hospice care, sitters, funeral assistance, medications, electric bills, and food. Our organization is important to not only provide a serene and loving place for end-of-life care, but also for the families. We remove the responsibility of caregiving for the family and enable them to go back to being simply that: the family. Being a caregiver for a terminally ill person is exhausting emotionally, mentally, physically, and financially.” All funds for the Hospice House come from fundraisers and personal donations, and the Foundation receives no federal, state or insurance funding. The home has three bedrooms, each with its own bathroom and a screened-in porch area. A common living room provides a place for families to congregate, and a kitchen and dining room accommodates residents and their family members. “This is the only home of this type in the community, and we are very proud to offer these services to the people of St. Tammany,” says Parker. “We provide a calm, serene, caring environment for end-of-life care, and that’s incredibly important.”

SOCIAL NORTHSHORE
“We remove the responsibility of caregiving for the family and enable them to go back to being simply that: the family.”
While the Hospice Foundation is not actually a hospice organization and does not provide hospice services, they do work with several hospice agencies to offer the Hospice House and caregivers, which are provided by Home Instead Senior Care. As crucial as their work is, the Hospice House faces some tough challenges. “Our biggest struggles are creating awareness for what we offer to the community and, of course, funding opportunities,” says Parker. “Hospice and death are not something that we, as a society, like to discuss. With COVID, we have had to cancel our biggest fundraiser two years in a row. This has resulted in a 62% deficit in our revenue in 2020. We are always looking for opportunities to do a presentation on what we provide, free of charge, to families in need.”

For more information on the Hospice House, call 985.643.5470 or visit thehospicehouse.org
As with any challenge, there are also triumphs to celebrate and hold on to. “Our most recent accomplishment was putting on the ‘Holes for Hospice’ golf tournament in May,” Parker observes. “This fundraiser came about because of our annual fundraisers, the Crawfish Cookoff and Wine and Dine with Hospice, being canceled. We had to find a way to support our mission, but we had never put on a golf tournament—nor did we know anything about hosting one. Still, we tackled it head-on; and because of the wonderful support from our community, it was a great success. We will host our second annual tournament in October 2022.” As the end of life draws close, the Hospice House offers something invaluable: care and support. That’s something worth all the money in the world, and they give it freely.

SENIOR HEALTH
Ask the Expert Dementia
EDITORIAL BY DR. SEBASTIAN F. KOGA, NEUROSURGEON We are accustomed to terms such as “senile dementia” and assume that memory decline is a normal part in old age. Although mild decline in memory skills may be normal with age, dementia is not part of normal aging and should be investigated. Screening is easily done and can be ordered by your primary care doctor or a neurologist.
WHAT CAUSES DEMENTIA? Dementia describes a group of symptoms which can arise from multiple causes. Alzheimer’s dementia is the most common type. Its exact causes are unknown; but it has a genetic link and is manifested by the reduction and death of neurons, leading to memory failure, personality changes, and problems with daily activities. Vascular dementia is caused by compromised blood flow to the brain. Other dementia syndromes can be caused by exposure to toxins, defective genes, and excess of cerebrospinal fluid. Often the causes are remote and cannot be reversed at time of diagnosis. However, it’s important to understand the difference between age-related memory issues and dementia.
DO I HAVE ALZHEIMER’S DEMENTIA? Although Alzheimer’s dementia probably represents over 60 percent of cases, there are several other types of dementia manifesting in different ways. Parkinson’s dementia, fronto-temporal dementia, Lewybody dementia, Huntington’s disease, and Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH) are other types which arise from various causes and require different treatments. Accurate diagnosis requires brain imaging with modern MRI protocols, clinical examination (including cognitive and physical tests), and cerebrospinal fluid tests. The latter means getting a lumbar puncture, but the test is harmless and very useful. Numerous diseases can be diagnosed by blood tests, but the blood–brain barrier restricts the passage of solutes into the blood, so these tests on cerebrospinal fluid are more accurate for brain disorders. Certain proteins in the spinal fluid act as a biomarkers of disease and can help diagnose and even predict future decline.
IS THERE ANY TREATMENT? Yes. Although there are no perfect cures, a specialist will be able to help. There are new drugs which delay the progression of Alzheimer’s, and for other dementias there are surgical techniques to increase blood flow to the brain or divert excess cerebrospinal fluid from the brain. As a neurosurgeon, I often treat patients with Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH). The procedure is relatively simple and can make a big difference in quality of life. It is not a cure, but it can delay or postpone symptoms for several years. I encourage all older patients with memory issues to see a specialist with training in neurology or neurosurgery.
CAN I DO ANYTHING FOR PREVENTION? Besides genetic factors, dementia syndromes have been linked to depression, head injuries, and hypertension. Maintaining normal blood pressure is important, as well as maintaining normal blood sugars which affect circulation in the capillary blood vessels that supply sensitive areas of the brain such as the temporal lobe and the retina. Social withdrawal is a risk factor, so keeping an active and social lifestyle is also important, as is maintaining intellectual activity at all ages. Retirees especially need to continue reading, engaging intellectually with an area of interest, having a hobby, and seeing friends. The brain is stimulated by complex tasks.
LAST WORDS Dementia is not part of normal aging. If you or your family are concerned about memory lapses and diminished cognitive abilities, seek an evaluation. Screening is easy, and there is a growing arsenal of treatments which work better with early intervention. Knowledge is power.
“I traveled from Florida to have surgery with Dr. Koga and my experience was seamless! His team is first rate, and I had zero complications. I went from living in fear of a stroke to completely normal life at home in just a few weeks!” -ED 20

What is unique about your location? Portions of the building were designed by famous Louisiana modern architect John Desmond as a medical clinic more than fifty years ago. The mid-century modern space was ideal to convert to an upscale restaurant, and we took great care during renovations to keep some of the original elements intact. More research showed us that the original building--which was a gas station--had been added on to by John Desmond to create the mid-century modern classic that it is now, and the architects preserved those elements that were designed and added by John Desmond, which included painted exposed structural steel; cypress wood soffits and ceilings; custombuilt steel frame windows; and beautiful translucent Carrara marble, which was glazed into the window system. All of these elements were maintained and restored.

What sets you apart from other Chefs/Restaurants? What sets me apart is that I create, prepare, cook, and serve personalized coursed-out wine dinners that I bring to your destination of choice. The options are endless and customizable, depending on your drink/food preferences and dietary needs. I also run a meal prep business with healthier meal options for those who like to leave their cooking to the Chefs. Do you have a favorite dish/entree? “The Old-Fashioned” Pork Belly would have to be my specialty. It conjures all of the flavor profiles of an oldfashioned cocktail. It consists of braised and seared pork belly, orange bourbon sweet potatoes, and bittered greens, topped with a luxardo gastrique. What’s one ingredient you can’t live without and why? Lemon or citrus has so many different applications/levels of flavor. It adds a “pop” to enhance whatever you are preparing and is perfect for either starting or finishing a dish! What’s your favorite meal to prepare at home? My fiancee and I love Hispanic foods. I use lots of Latino spices and flavors when cooking at home. Tacos are a personal favorite because the combinations are limitless, and I always have room for salsa. What do you love most about the local restaurant industry? The variety of people I’ve met. I wouldn’t be where or who I am today without them. Whether I’ve worked with them in this industry or not, most of the relationships/ friendships I’ve developed have revolved around the restaurant business. I am so grateful and humbled by the local community’s continuing support.

STORY BY KAYLA BERTUCCI Taboo. The meaning of taboo according to MariamWebster’s dictionary is, “banned on grounds of morality.” Shane Venezia is working to start a conversation surrounding a subject that makes most people uncomfortable – child abuse and human trafficking. As taboo as this topic is, Venezia believes it is an important one to highlight in order to help children in the community who may be experiencing abuse. “I personally think because a majority of people feel like ‘if I don’t look for it, it’s not there,’ is a big reason this type of abuse goes on without thought or recognition,” says Venezia. “If what was happening to children was happening to dolphins or whales, it would be all over the news. Nobody wants to see the ugliness of people involving innocent children. That’s the main taboo thing. I can’t think of anything worse than sex trafficking.”

Having served as a U.S. Army veteran, he knows a thing or two about strength training. Now, this braveheart who fought for his country continues to fight towards a goal. Venezia hopes to raise $50,000 to benefit the Children’s Advocacy Center – Hope House, a nonprofit that provides healing and justice for victims of child abuse and human trafficking in St. Tammany and Washington Parishes. “Each year, members of the CrossFit Community join together in raising funds for different organizations,” he explains. “This year, I will run an ultramarathon 50K for the $50k we are set to raise for this incredible mission in helping children and families dealing with this crisis.” As a family man, Venezia says his wife and children are his entire world. With a 6-year-old daughter, Remi, and 4-year-old son, Gage, there’s no surprise where this spark came from to help give a voice to the voiceless. “This subject of child abuse has always been on my radar; I know it exists. I’ve seen the ugliest in humanity being in the army, but the fact that people are capable of this…I’m thinking some of these girls I’ve learned about who are my daughter’s age. To think that this is even a thing almost dumbfounds me,” Venezia says.

ith its sharp peaks, smooth white expanse of stucco, stately columns, and multitude of mullioned windows, there’s something old worldly about the home that the Authement family created for themselves in Mandeville. Built in 2020, the 9500 square feet that comprise Belle Maison embodies the picture of Acadian architecture, made to look as though it is a heritage home rather than one that was completed merely a year ago. oasting dual masters with en-suite baths as well as three additional bedrooms, four bathrooms, and an office, the home sprawls across the lush expanse of green it sits on, interrupted only by the meticulously maintained landscaping and a blue stone paver patio leading to a vibrant blue pool and a cabana area. The lot backs up to a thick expanse of trees that gives the property a sense of privacy—one of the main reasons the owners fell in love with the location. That, and the size of the property itself. “My dad and I built this home together with the plan of sharing as a family after selling both of our own homes,” says Joseph Authement, who shares the home with his wife of 16 years, Megan, and their three children as well has his parents, Pam and Rickey Authement. “We all moved to Mandeville after losing both of our homes in hurricane Katrina and had always wanted to build a home together. Then we found a perfect corner lot in a quiet cul-de-sac in the sanctuary that was over an acre to build this home on.”

Naturally, with the pool and cabana as well as the wooded area that lines the back perimeter of the property, the outdoor elements of the home have great appeal—especially for the kids and the dogs. As breathtaking as the exterior may be, it is the interior that truly shines.

The theme of white continues inside, wrapping the walls in cool, crisp colorlessness that allows the architectural details and carefully chosen décor to take focus. “We wanted to bring in some old New Orleans-French Quarter feel throughout the home because our family is originally from New Orleans,” Joseph explains. In the living room, soaring cathedral ceilings are lined with exposed beams reclaimed from the Levi Strauss factory, bringing with them an element of warmth and over 100 years of history. Anchoring the space are reclaimed antique heart of pine floors, almost mirroring the beams overhead. On the back wall, an elegant, antique style fireplace creates the perfect space to showcase art that provides a vibrant pop of color in an otherwise white expanse of space. A large chandelier hangs above, adding another touch of elegance to the rustic feel of the room.

Flowing from one room to the next, the heart of pine floors and reclaimed beams on the ceilings provide a sense of continuity, as does the old Chicago brick that accents the main rooms of the first floor. The open floor plan of the living and dining room transition seamlessly into the kitchen, with a massive island claiming pride of place in the center of the room. Topped by Taj Mahal quartzite, the Shaker-style custom cabinetry continues the theme of white, with stainless steel Viking appliances offering everything a home chef could want in a kitchen. A ceramic farmhouse sink in the island lends to the French country modern look of the space, and a custom plaster vent hood above the stove incorporates perfectly with the thick crown molding tracing out the ceiling. Just off the kitchen, a 375-bottle wine cellar holds the Authements’ collection. “The kitchen and the wine cellar are really two of our favorite rooms of the house,” says Joseph. “We love to cook, so we spend a great deal of time in the kitchen.

Tiffani DUC TE SUPERMOM BY LIESEL SCHMIDT
“Special needs.” It’s a term given to children who have just that: special needs due to a developmental delay or physical disability. While their needs are great, the effect they have on those around them is even greater, encouraging the growth and development of everyone else to be their best selves. For Tiffani Ducote, being the mother of a child with Down Syndrome has taught her an immeasurable amount about life—and connecting with the world around her. Raising two boys she and her husband adopted at birth, Ducote has also learned how to multi-task with her work as a Program Manager within the Information Services division at Ochsner Health System, her family, and her community involvement. While it
may keep her head spinning at times, she wouldn’t have it any other way. “I enjoy multi-tasking and being involved in the community and making an impact for my local disability community,” says Ducote, who serves on the board for UP21 (St. Tammany’s local Down Syndrome organization) and is acting president for Exceptional Abilities, Ochsner’s Employee Resource Group dedicated to supporting the disability community. “I can’t put into words the fulfillment all of it provides for me as a human being.”
What fulfills her most, however, is her boys. “Carson, my 13-year-old, is an avid baseball player; and we are always at a ballpark for either him or his six-year-old brother, Roman. At about three
weeks old, Roman was unexpectedly diagnosed with Down Syndrome,” Ducote recalls. “This has been a hidden gift in that it has re-shaped all of us, from shifting my career and energies to more of a community focus and disability advocacy position. Now, Roman is an active little boy who enjoys playing sports with the NS Miracle League—baseball, like his big brother--and horseback riding at New Heights Therapeutic Riding Center in Folsom.”
As busy as her life is, Ducote knows that her work is setting an example for her boys. “I believe that, while I have two children that are incredibly different, I believe they will grow up with the same impression of their mom,” she notes. “They’ll see that I never AUGUST 2021

give up, always try to fill a need and advocate. I earned my MBA at Southeastern when my oldest was three years old, and I was working full-time as a nurse at St. Tammany Parish Hospital. I thrive on hard work and community involvement, which I know will be important to both of my boys.” All of her work, all of her advocacy, is something she’s certainly proud of. But what she sees in her children is something that surpasses it all. “As my oldest son is growing and maturing into his adolescence, I receive feedback from teachers, other parents and adults how kind and compassionate he is towards others,” she says. “I don’t think it has anything to do with me, but with the lessons he has learned by being immersed within the Down Syndrome community. He has an uncanny ability to connect with people and children with special needs, and this makes me incredibly proud! He reaches out to those who are different and connects with them. I think this has made me realize that my job, whether as a mom or businesswoman, is to facilitate the experience and help to make those connections so that we can all grow.”
Advanced Technology Fabulous Frames Friendly Staff
As her children get older, Ducote hopes she has instilled in them the most important things—but she also hopes that they never forget the little things about who she is: “While I am not always fun, I want them to remember the silly times—like when I jam to the radio on the way to school or act like a complete goof,” she says with a smile, going on to describe some cherished family traditions. “Every year, we dress up as a family for our Halloween Block Party. We start brainstorming Halloween costumes pretty early in the year. We also participate as one big family at the UP21 Foundation’s Walk in the Park to support our ‘Super Roman.’ We also take annual beach vacations, and we try to catch an LSU baseball game every year.” As she has learned over the course of being a mother, life has challenges. Life sometimes has special needs. And life always, always needs love. 68

5 TIPS
TO KEEP YOUR JOINTS
HEALTHY
As you age, you might experience pain in your joints that can affect everyday activities. Try to incorporate these 5 tips to improve your joint health which can help you avoid medical issues or surgery down the road. 1. KEEP MOVING.
When your joint moves, it reduces stiffness/ pain and increases your flexibility and strength.
2. EAT RIGHT.
Vitamin C and calcium are two sources of nutrition that keep your bones and joints healthy and battle against degenerative diseases such as osteoarthritis. Examples of Vitamin C and calcium rich foods are: broccoli, milk, orange juice and yogurt.
4. DON’T SMOKE.
Smoking can lead to reduced bone mass, and people who smoke have a higher chance of bone fractures.
5. AVOID WEIGHT GAIN.
Extra body weight puts more pressure on your joints. For every pound of excess weight carried, 4 pounds of extra pressure is applied to the knees. So if you’re 10 pounds overweight, your knees absorb 40 pounds of extra pressure, which can damage the joints over time. If you’re overweight, losing a few pounds can reduce inflammation and pain. If you’re suffering from joint pain, North Oaks Orthopaedic Specialty Center is here to help. Our joint experts use innovative techniques to help you get relief from joint pain so you can do more of what matters most.

Drink at least 60 oz. (8 glasses) of water a day to keep the cartilage that is connected to your joints moving well.

WHAT IS CALMARE SCRAMBLER THERAPY®? Calmare Therapy® (scrambler therapy) is an FDA-cleared alternative pain management therapy aimed at creating a non-addictive, non-invasive, non-pharmacological, highly effective treatment for acute and chronic neuropathic pain. GREAT TREATMENT FOR THE FOLLOWING CONDITIONS
Chemotherapy-Induced Peripheral Neuropathy + Chronic Regional Pain Syndrome + Failed Back Surgery Syndrome + Chronic Post-Herpetic Neuralgia + Sciatic Nerve Pain + Chronic Back Pain + Spinal Stenosis + Post-Surgical Nerve Lesion Neuropathy + Brachial Plexus Neuropathy + Phantom Limb Pain Syndrome + Migraines + Atypical Headache
The first provider in Louisiana to offer
CALMARE SCRAMBLER THERAPY® for acute & chronic neuropathic pain.
The Calmare® device uses a biophysical rather than a biochemical approach. A ‘no-pain’ message is transmitted to the nerve via disposable surface electrodes applied to the skin in the region of the patient’s pain. The perception of pain is cancelled when the no-pain message replaces that of pain, by using the same pathway through the surface electrodes in a non-invasive way.

Boomer
LIFE
By Liesel Schmidt
W
atch out Millennials—you may have the world pretty much conquered in terms of technological prowess, but Baby Boomers still have the market cornered when it comes to owning a home. But before you break out Google to see who exactly qualifies as Baby Boomers, just keep reading. We know, your fingers are probably twitching, but bear with us. For all of you who don’t know what a Baby Boomer is, they are the part of the U.S. population born between 1946 and 1964 (shout out to your grandparents…maybe even your parents). Believe it or not, there are quite a lot of them running around—in fact, more than 76 million of them. Because they control so much of the housing market, they also dictate a lot of the trends, including types of housing and the special design features they want in their homes. Generally speaking, these on-trend Baby Boomers are interested in highertech, less traditional home styles that lend themselves to active, social lifestyles but also have practical design that will lend itself to the aging process that is inevitably on the horizon. One of the most popular features that Boomers seek out in new homes or remodels includes technology. Baby Boomers have become pretty tech-savvy in their own right, and they want to stay in touch with family and friends, telecommute, maintain home security, and even automate various systems to make their lives more convenient. In short, they’re looking for smart homes to keep their lives as streamlined as possible. Natural lighting is another must. Advances in technology spill over into other areas, including housing materials. Innovation has brought the creation of new window designs that make it easier to allow more natural light into the home without s a c r i f i c i n g e n e rg y
efficiency; so Baby Boomers are now prioritizing natural light, buying homes with these larger windows, skylights, and sliding glass doors. Accessibility becomes an increasing concern, as well. Homes with spacious rooms, wider doorways, and larger hallways seem less cluttered but also lend themselves to easier navigation and access for seniors as they experience decreased mobility. While downsizing may be a consideration for Baby Boomers who find themselves with an empty nest, large master bedrooms and bathrooms also become a priority. Empty nesters often look for homes primarily designed for individuals and couples rather than full families. Instead of larger common spaces, many homes designed for Baby Boomers include spacious first-floor master suites with attached master baths, requiring no stairway access that may become increasingly harder as the years go by. Maintenance and upkeep is a concern for any homeowner, but more so as people age. Many retiring Baby Boomers prefer condominiums or townhomes that require less maintenance and come with amenities including on-site security, recreation, and fitness facilities. More Boomers are also choosing to create upstairs bonus rooms rather than more expensive finished basements. Throughout the country, outdoor living space has even become more utilized, and Boomers are getting on the trend with sunrooms, screened porches, and covered patios. Upgraded features including outdoor kitchens, water features, swings, and barbecue grills are becoming part of the landscape of Baby Boomer life, as well. AUGUST 2021

Frank andNancy Love at the Derby
By Liesel Schmidt
While the fast-paced, hit-‘em-hard and take no prisoners world of roller derby might not be the most romantic place to strike up a relationship, that was exactly where Nancy LaRoccaTrexler and Frank Deus had their first date. Though it may have been their first and last roller derby experience, it was just the beginning of what was to become true love.

fter three years of dating, Frank popped the question that changed their lives forever. “We were doing the Christmas season cocktail tour at the downtown hotels and at August's restaurant, and then he proposed by asking me to share the rest of our lives together,” says Nancy, who works as an Occupational Therapist, while Frank is a physician.
Two years later, on May 8, 2021, Nancy walked down the aisle outside at Beau Chene Country Club in Mandeville to meet Frank at the altar. Wearing an cream, off-the-shoulder-gown, she exchanged vows with her soon-to-behusband, surrounded by friends and family—including their attendants, who were Nancy’s two daughters and Frank’s two sons. “Having our children share our special day was such a blessing to us both,” says Nancy. “It was such an amazing day, and the weather for the outdoor ceremony was absolutely perfect. The staff was also amazing to work with, and we were blessed to finally have our wedding on the first weekend that COVID restrictions were lifted after having postponed our wedding for a year due to the pandemic. But it finally happened, and it was a wonderful experience from start to finish.”

After being pronounced husband and wife, the newly married Deuses joined their guests for a reception on the property, enjoying a buffet style meal that included prime rib, a nacho bar, and fried fish po’boys. After dining and dancing, the couple cut into a three-tier pecans and praline cake decorated in cream colored frosting with gold leaves and cream flowers. “It was absolutely the best wedding cake I've ever tasted,” says Nancy. “Our guests practically gobbled it down.” Having been sent off with the well-wishes of their guests, the Deuses flew off to their honeymoon in St. Lucia. “It was absolutely beautiful,” Nancy says. “We stayed at an all-inclusive resort and celebrated with many couples sharing our same wedding date, so it was like a great big party.” Now back home in Mandeville, the couple looks forward to spending the rest of their lives together filled with love…and absolutely no more roller derby.

Downsizing When the last child leaves home and heads out into the real world it can be absolutely terrifying(for you and them). Going through a roller coaster of emotions is completely normal. Time to down-size your home and start the next adventure as your retirement period begins. Before you search for boxes to pack, check out our go-to tips for how — and why — to downsize your home effectively.
WHY SHOULD I DOWN-SIZE & WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS? If you realize that downsizing your home is the opportunity to live within a new lifestyle, you will be more eager to sort through your old items. Most retirees have been living in an empty nest for quite a few years, so your large family home might not be the best for you and your spouse any longer. Downsizing your possessions can be the first step to owning a smaller home and spending the extra cash on a vacation home or a new RV so that you can travel and see the world.
SORT AND SIFT IN STEPS Downsizing your home will not be a weekend project. Break down your downsizing agenda into realistic pieces by going room by room or commit to a few hours of purging per week. You will find that the experience is much more enjoyable when you aren’t pressed for time or burned out by the end of the day. Organize your items into sections or piles: things to keep, things to sell, things to give to children or family members, things to donate, and things to toss. You can always ask your children to come participate in this. That way, you will not have any regrets or second thoughts while downsizing your possessions.
SAVE THE MEMORIES Downsizing your home does not mean you need to get rid of items that posses sentimental value. When you are taking a look at your possessions and furniture, think in terms of the future while still preserving the past. If you have been holding on to your children’s baby clothes, do not toss them but keep them for grandchildren. But, you might want to go ahead and donate or sell the larger items that are adding clutter to your living space that don’t carry the same sentimental feelings.
EMOTIONS ARE OKAY Downsizing can bring all sorts of emotions that you may or may not expect. Your children might be mad that you tossed their favorite childhood book without asking them or they might be sad that you are looking to move out of their childhood home. All of these emotions are valid and two not rush yourself. If you find that you are becoming overwhelmed with the process, just stop and pick it up again in a month or two.
REWARD YOURSELF Downsizing is not always an easy process and if you are taking your time, it can be a while before you are finally finished. Celebrate yourself and your accomplishments! Take some of the money that you earned on selling your items and head out to dinner or a weekend getaway. Congratulations on your retirement and welcome to the adventure of this phase of your life!
