Anegada is the northernmost island and the most remote of the Virgin Islands. It is the second largest of the Virgin Islands (UK) measuring 15 square miles (38 sq. km). It is approximately 15 miles (24 km) north of Virgin Gorda and 20 miles (32 km) northeast of Tortola. Unlike the other inhabited islands that are mountainous, Anegada is flat. Its highest point is about 28 feet above sea level, earning it its name which derives from the Spanish term "ahogada" meaning “drowned land”. It is the only inhabited Virgin Island that is formed by limestone and coral and not of volcanic elements. Anegada is surrounded on one side by the infamous Horseshoe Reef, known for its many shipwrecks; at least 300. The reef is the largest barrier coral reef in the Caribbean measuring about 18 miles long, and the fourth largest in the world. This eco-island is known for its endless white sandy beaches, salt ponds with pink flamingoes and its indigenous iguanas. Anegada is “nature’s little secret” at its best. The main industries of Anegada are tourism and fishing with tourism at the forefront. Anegada has a vibrant fishing industry with local fishermen providing a significant amount of fresh fish, conch and lobster catch for the rest of the Virgin Islands.

Anegada has a population of approximately 300 persons primarily of African or Afro Caribbean descent. Most of the population live in the main village known as “The Settlement”. Its people are friendly and hospitable. They welcome you with a genuine Anegada smile.
FESTIVALS & EVENTS The Annual Anegada Lobster Fest is a two-day culinary event held in November on the shores of Anegada. Hundreds of visitors flock Anegada for an opportunity to sample a variety of succulent lobster dishes from various restaurants. Snorkeling, scuba diving, kite surfing, fishing and scenic nature trails are fun activities to enjoy in Anegada.

HOW TO GET TO ANEGADA You can get to Anegada via boat, ferry or plane. The Smith Ferry leaves from Road Town, Tortola and Spanish Town, Virgin Gorda three times per week to Anegada. The ferry trips are normally two times a day. Same day charter flights can also be arranged from Tortola, Virgin Gorda and the U.S. Virgin Islands to the Auguste George Airport on Anegada. Anegada is also accessible by direct flight from San Juan, Puerto Rico.
ANEGADA AT A GLANCE Salt Ponds: One fourth of the island is made up of Salt Ponds. There are four salt ponds with the Flamingo Pond being the largest. These ponds create a vital and fascinating ecosystem for many persons including preservationists, visitors, explorers, biologists, environmentalists. Museum: A small museum inside the Pomato Point Restaurant houses several artifacts mostly from shipwrecks on Horseshoe Reef.
GOVERNMENT SERVICES The main government services are located in The Settlement. The Claudia Creque Educational Centre is the only public school on Anegada. There are also a government administrative Exciting Villas on the beach under construction building, a clinic, a police and a fire station. A very small airport, the Auguste George Airport, is close to The Settlement.
WINING & DINING Anegada has a variety of delightful restaurants each with their own unique twist. Scrumptious fish, conch and lobster meals dominate along with mouth watering side dishes.
