Sir Francis Drake Channel

The

Sir Francis Drake Channel is possibly one of the most utilized names by

seamen, sailors, historians and even realtors in the beautiful Virgin Islands. This infamous channel is a major sea passage separating Tortola from the smaller islands. During the 1600-1700s the Sir Francis Drake Channel was known as the “Freebooters Gangway”. The channel was essentially a pirate’s highway. The Sir Francis Drake channel, today, is a busy water way for water taxis, yachts, speedboats and the likes sailing through the Virgin Islands (UK) and connecting the United States Virgin Islands. The legendary, Sir Francis Drake, which the channel was named in his honor, was an English sea captain extraordinaire, pirate, privateer slaver, navigator, admiral and a politician of the Elizabethan era. Detested by the old nobility, he was a self made wealthy man that fought well for Britain defeating the Spanish Armada. Although famous, very little is known about Francis Drake’s background. He was born in the sixteenth century around 1540-1544 (actual birthday unknown) in Devonshire, England. Francis Drake’s father, Edmund, was a Protestant Sir Francis Drake (Photo Credit: www.britishbattles.com) and may have been a sailor. In 1569, Francis Drake married Mary Newman. He remarried in 1585 to Elizabeth Sydenham. Both marriages bore no children. At an early age, Francis Drake took to navigation well and was soon enlisted by some relatives that were privateers who prowled the shipping lanes off the French coast, seizing merchant ships and conducting illicit trading. By the 1560s, Francis Drake was given his own ship where he sailed to Africa to engage in the

FEATURED ARTICLE slave trade. He sailed to New Spain to sell his captives to settlers which was against Spanish law. Francis Drake was unfortunate as he and his men were trapped in the Mexican port of San Juan de Ulua. Some of his men were killed but Francis Drake managed to escape with his cousin John Hawkins. Francis Drake developed a hatred towards the Spanish Crown and so much of his life was spent rivaling with the Spaniards. In 1577, he was chosen by Queen Elizabeth I as the leader of an expedition intended to pass around South America, through the Strait of Magellan, and explore the coast that lay beyond to reach the Pacific Ocean. Francis Drake and his men were caught in a Water Taxi sailing through the Channel storm, and unfortunately two ships were set back. One ship, commanded by sea captain John Wynter, reversed course and returned to England. The other ship vanished and was never seen again. Drake stayed on course in his flagship, The Golden Hind. He sailed up the coasts of Chile and Peru, destroying unprotected Spanish merchant ships that were full of gold and silver. Francis Drake eventually landed off the coast of California which he claimed for Queen Elizabeth I. He repaired his ship and sought food supplies, then he set sail across the Pacific. He returned to England landing in Plymouth in 1580 with enormous treasure and became very popular. He was knighted by Queen Elizabeth I in 1581 for completing the journey which annoyed the King of Spain. In September 1581, his political career began when he was elected the Mayor of Plymouth and became a member of parliament. In 1585, El Draque, as the Spanish called Sir Francis Drake, sailed to the West Indies and the coast of Florida where he attacked and destroyed several Spanish cities having being a loyal subject to Queen Elizabeth I. This 1585 mission marks a further step on the road to a great war between England and Spain. While returning, he picked up the unsuccessful colonists of Roanoke Island off the coast of the Carolinas. The Roanoke Island was the first English colony in the New World. In

...cont’d FEATURED ARTICLE 1587, war with Spain was imminent and Sir Francis Drake sailed his fleet into the port of Cadiz. He and his crew destroyed thirty of the ships the Spanish were assembling against the British. In 1588, he was a vice admiral in the fleet that defeated the Spanish Armada (a major Spanish fleet with over 130 ships). Drake's last expedition, with his cousin Sir John Hawkins, was to the West Indies. He passed through the Virgin Islands in 1595. Sir Francis Drake spent a few days collecting his fleet in North Sound, Virgin Gorda before he joined Hawkins to attack Puerto Rico. He sailed from Virgin Gorda using an unpatrolled route to the east of St. Thomas and that is the route now known as the Sir Francis Drake Channel which was named in his honor. It’s recorded that Sir Francis Drake visited the Virgin Islands four times on his expeditions. On his last expedition, the Spanish were prepared and the venture was a disaster for Drake. Sir Francis Drake died on 28 January 1596 of dysentery off the coast of Portobelo, Panama. His body was buried at sea in a lead coffin.

The channel today apart from its use in the sailing industry and its name being use on a variety of mix drinks and establishments is also widely used as a reference point for real estate on Tortola in particular. Real estate agents, surveyors and valuators alike often refer to the Sir Francis Drake Channel when describing properties overlooking the beautiful waters of the Virgin Islands. In fact, there are also many properties which use “Francis Drake” as part of their name. Although his legacy is a mixed one, his name is now synonymous with exquisite sailing, numerous unique islands and a life at sea unmatched anywhere else but in the Virgin Islands.
