pring is officially here, and the road beckons! To kick off the start of the driving season, the Club is offering free coffee for members at Cars & Coffee on April 9 in Courtenay, and April 10 in Parksville and Victoria. I hope to see many of you there. Sadly, I won’t be able to start the season just yet, as my 944 is still waiting on parts for the engine rebuild. Apparently, there is one place in North America that makes sleeves, and demand is up. And me without a spare Porsche. Hmmmm. While I would much rather attend Porsche events in a Porsche, it is, after all, not just the cars, it’s the people!
In March, I attended the Zone 6 President’s meeting in Boise, Idaho. It was great to connect with my counterparts, and discuss matters of mutual interest. We heard presentations from our Zone 6 rep, John Sommerwerk, and from two PCA National Office representatives: Executive Council Secretary Todd Benz and Driving Tour Chair Greg Halverson. Todd went over a state of the union for PCA, which highlighted a 6.6% growth last year collectively in the 14 Zones and 147 Regions. It was the biggest growth year ever.

ebruary was a busy month; getting ready for the Zone 6 President’s meeting, continuing our Zone 6 travel plans, and trying to find time to scratch my downhill skiing addiction.
On March 19, the Zone 6 Region Presidents met in Boise to discuss the PCA Strategic Plan, Risk Management, Region Leadership 101, and to have an open discussion on issues impacting our regions. All ten regions were represented. Five of the regions sent multiple representatives. Greg Halverson, PCA National Tour director and PNWR member, was in attendance to discuss running successful PCA tours. It was great to meet in person once again. The issues impacting the Zone 6 regions we focused on included data security & privacy, newsletters, and volunteerism. We discussed the importance to have key documents stored securely and why we need to protect the privacy of member data. Region newsletters continue to be a source of concern. Publish online or hardcopy or both? How much to charge for ads? It is never easy to fill region positions and Covid regulations have made it more difficult to reach out and get folks to fill leadership positions within our regions. It is my hope that the discussions we had start us down the path to successful resolutions. Nancy and I are now registered for Broadmoor Treffen in April, VIR’s Black Rock in May, Parade in June, CWR’s Escape 2022 in July and INWR’s 50th Anniversary Gala in August. Also on our travel planning horizon is the OR’s Summer Picnic in August, Sun River Treffen in September, and SSR’s Oktoberfast in October. We continue to look for more opportunities to visit the Zone 6 regions. I have been warned that if I need new tires for my Porsches order them soon. With all this driving we will need good rubber. I am happy to report that I was able to secure a new set of Pirelli P-Zeros. The fronts came from a Seattle, WA warehouse, and the rears from Shreveport, LA. Stay healthy and we will see you in the Zone.

On Saturday, March 12 some Up Island members enjoyed a belated Valentine’s luncheon social at Courtenay’s Crown Isle Resort & Golf Community. We enjoyed each other’s company, but few Porsches attended as the weather was cold, rainy and blustery. Members from the Comox Valley, Campbell River, Qualicum Beach and Parksville attended. Up Island Director Wendy Woodley had the event well planned and a few brave members told stories about meeting their long time partners. The always brave Roslyn Nickel navigated a complicated story of husband Dave losing their engagement ring in a Dairy Queen recycling container . . . never to be seen again!! Richard Deluca, a Comox Valley member provided his business pens, which also have a very handy light, to all our members. Thanks Richard. A tasty lunch was enjoyed by all attendees with a delicious Valentine’s Black Forest Cake. Members sorted through the available complimentary gifts, mainly from Porsche Centre Victoria, plus some from Dan Ryan, a former VIR member. Thanks to Zoe and John’s presentation and display, $200 was raised to assist the struggle in Ukraine. The ever thoughtful Wendy gifted the ladies in attendance with a wine glass of their choice and a rose to take home. A fine time was had by all.

Got Belted! During the last year and a half (through most of the pandemic) I’ve finally been restoring my 1998 Boxster. She’s 24 years old now and with 300,000 miles on the clock it was due time. I had done a lot of the “invisible” work already: Performance upgrades such as fully modified air intake, equal length headers, Pedro Sport Exhaust, ECU tuning, larger brakes, adjustable suspension and droplinks among others but now was it was time for the eye-candy! I decided to restore it to my vision of what I would have wanted the car to be from the factory. That meant some exterior mods (adding side skirts), removing all the dings and fullbody paint, but keeping the same Glacier White color. A new convertible top was also now a must. I never liked the small glass rear window, so I kept the original top with the big, clear plastic window, and finally a new carbon-fibre hood with a monochrome Porsche Crest to point the way!
Then it was time for the interior. Here I decided to create a unique Wolfsburg edition 986. I searched hi and low for the specific material I had in mind and finally found it. The interior was originally full graphite gray leather. I decided that to better integrate the fabric inserts she needed a two-tone leather restoration so black and gray it is. Finally for the “pièce de résistance” I wanted deviating color seatbelts! Obviously, with the interior changes, orange was the obligatory color. VANCOUVER ISLAND — PORSCHER
April 2022 Page 22
Because I am a Club Racing Scrutineer, we are trained to look at every racecar’s seatbelts before every race while doing the mandatory safety checks. In a racecar, seatbelts cannot be more than 5 years old and they cannot show any signs of abrasion, stretching, or any other type of damage. If they do, the racecar owner must replace them by the next race or they can’t go on track until they do. It’s that important. Trying to correlate that to my car, my OEM seatbelts were 24 years old and because it’s a convertible, they’ve been subjected to many hours of direct UV light and probably rolled and retracted close to 15,000 times! (I figure, to be conservative, twice a day times 20 years). So the decision to replace was a sound one. Since I’m a one-man-band and a DIY’er, I figured that I would find out the length of each side of the seatbelts, go online and order the 2 inch webbing material from the many resellers, pick the perfect orange tone and replace it myself since I have a sewing machine and some strong thread material. Piece of cake ….. well, not so fast. It turns out that the vast majority of the 2” webbing material sold online (and offline as well) is not intended to be used for seatbelts, but rather as strapping and or towing material. Some of them, many from China may even have “DOT Approved” stamped on them. Anyone not knowing the whole story could think it’s legit, but VANCOUVER ISLAND — PORSCHER
April 2022 Page 23
DOT regulates tire manufacturing, not seatbelts. Seatbelts are regulated by the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) which are issued by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration NHTSA and can be very, very complex and very difficult to comply with. Because of those regulations there are just a handful of legitimate seatbelt-webbing manufacturers worldwide. Those regulations require, among others: G-Force testing, Tilt Lock testing, Webbing Abrasion testing, Salt Spray testing, Tensile test at 10,000 lb., Tensile test at 5,000 lb. as well as Retractor Cycling test. To be approved, seatbelts must comply with: • FMVSS Safety Standard #209 which specifies requirements for seatbelt assemblies. The requirements apply to straps, webbing or similar material, as well as to all necessary buckles and other fasteners and all hardware designed for installing the assembly in a motor vehicle and to the installation, usage, and maintenance instructions of the assembly. • FMVSS Safety Standard #302 which specifies burn resistance requirements for materials used in the occupant compartments of motor vehicles. Its purpose is to reduce death and injuries to motor vehicle occupants caused by vehicle fires, especially those originating in the interior of the vehicle from sources such as matches or cigarettes. • Society of Automotive Engineers - SAE #J386 which establishes the minimum performance requirements for pelvic restraint systems necessary to restrain an operator or passenger with a rollover protective structure (ROPS) in the event of a machine rollover. The FMVSS also regulates the type of thread material used to finish the belt at the anchor points as well as the type of sewing machine used and the pattern of the stitching to finish the belt. It also requires that the manufacturer and the date of manufacturing be sewn in into a tag at the bottom of the belt. By the way, the OEM supplier to Porsche for seatbelts is the Berger Group which was founded in 1968 in Alfdorf, Germany by Johan Berger and now has factories in Belgium, Spain, Germany and China. They are also the OEM supplier to: Audi, Volkswagen, Lamborghini, BMW, Mercedes Benz, Mini, Ford, Jaguar, Volvo, Opel, Skoda and Hyundai among others. After having learned all this I have been VANCOUVER ISLAND — PORSCHER
April 2022 Page 24
carefully inspecting my customers’ seatbelts, especially those that have aftermarket (deviating color) belts. I have found that in every case (8) these aftermarket seatbelts were non-compliant with the FMVSS regulations. None of them had a manufacturer’s label, the sewing pattern was not the approved one and I’m sure the stitching wasn't either. I urge you to check yours if you have an aftermarket seatbelt and also if you have an older (20 years or more) vehicle. Look for that label and carefully inspect the belt for abrasions or wear areas. If you find any anomalies, please feel free to contact me and I’ll make recommendations based on your needs. Seatbelts can save your life as well as the lives of those riding with you! The Spring Rally is the first of two TSD Rallies to be held in 2022. This is a team event where each car has a driver and a navigator. The driver and navigator may swap between rally legs. It will be a family friendly event on paved, public roadways operating at/below posted speed limits. The rally will start in Mill Bay. There will be a number of short legs (usually six regularity stages) allowing time to chat between and learn from other teams. The event will end in the Duncan area with a meal where the results will be shared. If you have never taken part in a TSD rally, we will provide a Zoom orientation session, please email me at rally@virpca.org Only 35 car places available, so please register ASAP at msreg.com/2022-Spring-Rally

President, Olympic Peninsula Region,
Bill Corrigan
Editor - The OPR visited Griots’ Garage last year, Bill kindly provided his article for us to print. You’re a car person, so tell me, what’s the first thing that comes to mind when someone mentions Griot’s? Right, most of us within driving range of Tacoma think of their store with shelves and display cases loaded with the latest tools, liquids, and all car care paraphernalia to make your vehicles look their best. Something else that comes to mind are the monthly Cars and Coffee gatherings, each themed with some of your favorite marques. That’s all good, but over the years Griot’s has expanded to offer other services, still with our beloved cars in the spotlight. A couple of months ago the Olympic Peninsula Region sponsored a drive to Tacoma to see what else is going on. Maryann Elwell did a phenomenal job of planning the day, and after a short drive from Gig Harbor we arrived at Griot’s Motors, just down the hill from the more familiar Griot’s Garage. Griot’s Motors offers classic car restoration, sales and consignments, auto detailing, and secure, heated auto storage. We were met by Phillip Griot, Griot’s Motors principle. We were ushered into the new (2018) 30,000 square foot building, and in customary fashion it was a brightly lit, immaculately maintained facility, with the familiar Griot’s red and grey color motif. If you look at their website, you’ll see that Griot’s motors has been around since 2008, and “has overseen and experienced countless restorations, engine swaps, concours winning details …”. In the fascinating introduction Phillip told us how increasing demand and the expanding services pro-
VANCOUVER ISLAND — PORSCHER
April 2022 Page 29
vided by Griot’s Motors necessitated a dedicated facility. He told us about a number of the special projects they’d taken on and how some of the projects evolve while underway, as owners think of changes or upgrades they want to make while the vehicle is disassembled. In the main bay are at least five lift stations, some of which had project vehicles in various stages of their restoration or modifications. One was a Willys Jeep owned by Phillip’s father and founder of Griot’s, Richard. Apparently, Richard was adding to his collection (more about that collection in a bit) and the ground up restoration was well underway. As I recall, a few modern updates were being incorporated, but given the age of the Jeep, some of the parts must be fabricated on site from scratch.
Phillip took us around to the other lift stations and to some of the cars parked in the bay. Each was unique and had a story. From the main bay we stopped at the high-tech paint booths. These booths can control their environment, from eliminating particle contamination using HEPA air filters, to the temperature and of course humidity, all to assure the highest quality paint application. Leaving that building Phillip led us across to the vehicle storage facility. Here is where folks who want climate-controlled storage can park their precious rides in climate-controlled safety. Most of the vehicles can be accessed regularly and are not required to be in a non-driving storage state. There must have been at least 70 vehicles parked inside, most hooked up to battery tenders. We were able to wander among the vehicles, discovering more than a few unique examples, both classic and more recent, from Italian hyper cars to a lifted very rugged looking 4-wheel off-road motor home, to a project 240-Z in a state of disassembly or assembly … it was impossible to determine which. After that amazing tour of Griot’s Motors facilities, and an introduction to the capabilities and services they offer, we were off to the final stop, Richard Griot’s private car collection. VANCOUVER ISLAND — PORSCHER
April 2022 Page 30
It is accessed through an unmarked door off the display area of Griot’s Garage. Passing through the door you are immediately assailed with automotive eye candy. Each of these cars has a story and Phillip spent time relating several of them; funny, nostalgic or the car’s moment in history! There were a couple of Richard Petty’s stock cars, winning Formula 1 racers, rare Italian super-car examples, a couple of uniquely equipped 911s, a VW Thing, and much more. For a more detailed tour of Richard’s collection check out PCA’s YouTube video (2019). It is also a great interview with Richard where he explains the genesis of Griot’s Garage and stories behind some of the cars in his collection. A more recent video (2021) features Nick giving a tour of the collection. You can watch other videos that provide more fascinating stories behind the cars in the collection, which of course, continues to grow. We concluded our visit to Griot’s with a great Olive Garden lunch catered into Griot’s dining area, decorated like a 1950’s soda shop. If you can ever take advantage of a ‘full’ tour of Griot’s operations in Tacoma, jump onboard. We’ll sure do it again!
Bill Editor - Many thanks to Garth and OPR’s Bill Corrigan in getting us the article..
