Star Letter Personal Vision I received my Vision Magazine today and have not been able to put it down! I went straight to the Visionaries investigation, as I was at Avebury recently. I next read the article on SHC (Spontaneous Human Combustion), a subject that has interested me for years. Turning over the pages I couldn’t believe seeing the lovely Nick Ashron (Psychic Artist). I met Nick many years ago in London and he drew my guide (I keep his picture in my healing room). Continuing to flick through the pages, I came across Alison Holdroyd’s article on Reiki and being a Reiki Master myself found it very informative, especially for those who may not know about Reiki energy. Then, in the Reviews section, I saw the review for Patricia Spero and Tim Wheater’s new CD. Tim Wheater is a gifted man whom I saw recently at a healing festival in Somerset. At the back of the magazine there was one last surprise. In the Vision shop there were some pendants that had been produced under the guidance of Reiki Master and Teacher Allan Sweeney, who happens to be MY Reiki Master!! So thank you for an almost ‘personalised’ magazine this month! Chris Guyon, Stanford-le-Hope, Essex

On the level I would like to start off by saying what a wonderful magazine you produce and to say ‘Thank You’ to all who contribute to it. It is nice to have unbiased information, it surprises me how many magazines out there seem to have some slant. Once again, thank you to all involved. Stormwalker, Markinch, Fife.

Visually beautiful The first edition of your magazine that I encountered was issue 05 featuring Atlantis and I’ve been hooked ever since. There are an increasing number of magazines covering New Age and spiritual topics on the market, but Vision is the only one to really explore its features thoroughly by dedicating a number of pages to one subject. The treatment of all the mystical cultures covered has been excellent, containing both fascinating articles and beautiful graphics. I look forward to future editions of the magazine. Louise White, Wakefield.

his year’s York Ghost Festival had the tag-line ’Orribly Original, which proved to be more than effective marketing – it was a prediction! We had always intended for the festival to grow and grow and had planned a mammoth weekend of activity, followed by a gentle week of ghost walks and culminating in a massive public séance. The festival turned out to be more than anyone was expecting – in more ways than one. On Friday 28th October the first investigation was held at the Ebor Inn at Bishopthorpe. We had planned a total of three investigations and as luck would have it, the Ebor was the best possible start, but in no way prepared us for things to come. The Ebor was wellknown to both of us, we had been there before and enjoyed the friendly and welcoming company of Gordon Watkins, the landlord. We also had a little experience of the ghosts there, but really nothing to get too excited about. We were joined for the evening by some members of the public, notably

6 Vision 10

Cathryn and Jane who had travelled up from Tamworth for the festival. They were soon dowsing like pros and sweeping the bars with Electromagnetic Frequency Detectors (‘Gauss Meters’). After a few publicity shots, the investigation was underway. As was to be expected, the mediums picked up the mandatory “old

boy in the corner” with his beer and Woodbine. There were also a couple of child spirits, but early on, all was quiet on the Western Front. Taking a break from the ‘pressure’, three of the team went into the back yard where the stars were incredibly brilliant. However, it was dark away from the back of the pub, with the exception of the silhouette of a man framed by the pergola in the garden… He stood perfectly still and did not move when the three approached. Full of courage, they held their ground waiting for a movement – got none and ran hell for leather back into the pub! It was about 25 minutes later that they discovered it was a quieter member of the team that had been standing there – and that he was deaf in one ear so didn’t hear them coming! There were some strange moments with pendulums flying in the face of gravity and electric shocks being passed from one of the mediums to one of the public, but other than that it was a quiet night. Or so we thought. Look at the picture (opposite page, top). The figure on the right is Diana, taken from the back – the figure in the middle of the mirror simply wasn’t there in real life at all!

Di!

However, it was dark away “from the back of the pub,

baby’s aura! (See picture below). Later that evening we made our way to Ye Olde Starre Inne, venue for the next investigation. A historic pub, set down an alley in Stonegate right in the centre of York, Ye Olde Starre was chosen for its proximity to the birthplace of Guido Fawkes … and for it’s paranormal activity. We had quite a team for this event,19 of us in all. First of all Rachel took us out on one of her (in)famous Necropolis: City of the Dead Ghost Walks - Historical not Hysterical!. When we all arrived back, still in one piece, we settled down for pub close, so that we could get on with the investigation.

with the exception of the silhouette of a man framed by the pergola in the garden…

Saturday 29th October heralded another investigation, but first we had the chance to explore our auras with Carole Chui, Vision’s resident Aura Photographer. After a short explanation on how the machine works we all had a go. Diana and Rachel were both amazed at the size of their auras considering their long night, but most interesting was Nance’s aura. Nance, one of the Visionaries, is expecting the patter of little feet in the not-too-distant future and her aura was amazing! When you look at a picture of your aura on the machine, it throbs in a rhythm which is supposed to match your heartbeat. Nance’s was going nineteen to the dozen; nicely matching the pace of a foetal heartbeat. Over her heart chakra was a strange yellow ‘handkerchief’ shape – her

Once the investigation was underway, things got interesting. Firstly, there were the potatogeists. No, that was not a spelling error, but a new term coined for the apparition of potatoes from “nowhere” in the courtyard of the pub. Now call us bias, but we feel that the presences responsible for the apport of the potatoes should know that we’re firm believers – in logic. Although they hid themselves well, these little flying potatoes came from living human hands, in our humble opinion! The drama didn’t stop there. During one of the many séances, a really unpleasant atmosphere was picked up. Some of the public were a little disconcerted so we closed the séance. That didn’t prepare us for the terrified outburst and prompt exit of one of the men attending, though! He had picked up such strong images of horrific injuries and trauma he couldn’t stand it any more! He remained on site, but did not take part in anything else. The Inne was a hospital during the 1644 Siege of York, where “surgery” would have been done on site and many would have died of their injuries. As we exited the room, Angi, one of our mediums, collapsed. She lay on the floor in what seemed to be some considerable pain. Diana gave her Reiki immediately (having only been attuned that morning!) and Angi was finally able to sit up. It seems that the spirit of a soldier from the siege had used Angi’s mediumistic

of Hermitage castle in Scotland. He was also connected with both York and Rachel, the latter being a distant descendant of his! De Soulis communicated with a number the investigators, both PSI mediums and the public. At one point Tracy, one of the mediums, was recounting how he hated everyone and would like nothing better than to “slit a throat”. At the same time, in a totally different part of the dungeon, Diana was also communicating with him and not enjoying it: her voice broke and

ability to manifest through her and live out his final moments in a real body (hers): so that he could finally pass on. She was fine, but we were all a little tired from the drama, by the end of the event we were all ready to go to sleep! York Ghost Festival is not just ghostly investigations, but a chance for the organisers (PSI) to make total idiots of themselves. The Canting Crew, a team of talented (?) actors in full historic costume gave a number of performances in King’s Square for the delight, or more likely amusement, of bystanders. A recreation of the fearful Barguest story introduced the charming, and very, very, very small Ed to our crowd – this little dog completely convinced nobody of huge slavering jaws and a terrifying demenour. Rachel made quite a dashing highwayman, but Diana perhaps didn’t do justice to an innocent 12-year-old’s role - imagination was definitely called for! (See picture top right) One week

later the team descended on York Dungeon. The dungeon was dark, horrid and scary as it is meant to be; handy if you want atmosphere added to your investigation. What was not expected was the “appearance” of a spirit connected with York who made the night a little more ‘interesting’. To keep a long story short, the spirit of Lord de Soulis visited the mediums at York dungeon. He was an unpleasant character who was the Lord

trailed off and she grabbed her throat in pain. One of the investigators commented that Diana looked as if she’d been beaten up. De Soulis was still telling Tracy that he’d like to beat someone over the head before he slit their throat. Diana was unaware of Tracy’s “conversation” with him until much later. Please note that all the people affected were mediums and trained to deal with this so don’t have nightmares! If you fancy trying an investigation for yourself – put your name down now for next year’s festival!

Diana Jarvis talks to Dave Wharmby about his hopes for Parafest 2006: a ‘ghost convention’ with a twist… “Spirit told us to do this”, said Dave, hugging his tenth cup of tea. I have always baulked when confronted with an interviewee telling me about instructions from Spirit. However, I couldn’t help but be impressed by the concept of Parafest, a series of ghost conventions with a spiritual purpose behind them. “We run a closed circle” said Dave, motioning to his wife, Fran, whose hospitality I was enjoying in my tenth cup of tea. “In the circle we were visited by a spirit alchemist called Breen. He told us of Spirit’s desire to help souls ‘stuck’ between this world and the next – ghosts. We didn’t know what he meant … it took us a good week before the penny dropped.”

Parafest, apparently, is what Spirit wanted. Parafest is a paranormal convention which will be held in the UK at the paranormally-active Chilford Hall, near Cambridge; and simultaneously in the USA, Canada and New Zealand. However, the main purpose of the event will be a ‘Universal Passover’. “We are lead to believe that upon death we rise to Spirit realms, and this is true in most cases, but not all,” Dave told me. “Sometimes death has been swift and unexpected, such as murder, accident, torture, war or natural disaster. As a result (souls) are left wandering. Spirit has requested our help in aiding these souls to return home.” Dave’s quest to do this has attracted

media attention already. A Hollywood starlet has provisionally agreed to talk at USA Parafest and Derek Acorah is hoping to attend the UK venue along with Phil Wyman. I wondered if spirits trapped here would be obliged to move by the passingover, even if they didn’t want to? “The purpose is to move on those that can’t pass over on their own,” Dave reassured me. “No spirit will be forced on and they can come back and visit loved ones if they wish.” So how would this passing over take place? “There will be an inner circle of 12 trance mediums, as specified by our Breen,” said Dave. “Around this inner circle will be Parafest attendees prepared to give up their time to help Spirit. All faiths will be welcome and, hopefully, represented.” Why 12 trance mediums? “Twelve was the number specified to us: and that made sense to me. There are twelve apostles, twelve planets, twelve signs of the zodiac – the number 12 comes up repeatedly. 2012 is the year of the Mayan prophecies (see P60) and is one of the years that Parafest is scheduled.” Parafest 2006 will be held on Friday 27th October and Saturday 28th October 2006. There will be a Victorian fun fair, Chinese lion dancers, a display of Native American dance and drum and Oreros, a string-quartet, will be performing. Talks, workshops, stalls and readers will be present as well as a paranormal investigation on the Friday night. The Universal Passover will take place on the Saturday night. Tickets are available at £25 per head for the whole event including the Universal Passover (discounts for groups). Under 16s are free. Vision have exclusive magazine coverage of the event and the Visionaries will be in attendance at the investigation. Come and join us for a ground-breaking weekend! ello again my friends, and welcome to our monthly vigil, from us the Visionaries. This month we are in the sleepy town of Eyemouth. Armed with our equipment, enthusiasm and big winter coats! Here are our discoveries of the mysteries of Eyemouth.

Vision 10

On the way As we arrived in town, Di heard a voice telling her to go to the Fisherman’s Mission. The mediums were not aware of the disaster in advance and none of us knew if there was a Fisherman’s mission in the town.

The harbour and shoreline As we were walking down by the sea, we all picked up on the same thing, but in different ways. Dean could see a woman with a baby, stood at the shoreline and throwing a ring into the sea, he said that she had a lot of anger and he felt that she was experiencing a sense of loss. When I was walking around I picked up on lots of chaos and activity down at the docks, there was a sense of urgency and panic, lots of men and women rushing towards the shore. It then changed and I saw a woman being dragged along the docks, screaming and trying to get away. Di could see an army of men walking from the sea itself to the shore. She said that she felt there had been a terrible tragedy that had wiped out most of the town and was moved to tears. As we walked through town, we came across the Fisherman’s Mission that Di had been told to find – it did exist!

importance to them. There was a connection to an accident and people were gathering round a hillside. He felt that a handful of smugglers died as a wall collapsed on top of the tunnel causing the tunnel to cave-in. When Di entered the room, she picked up on a man; he has a scar on his chin and stood at the bottom of the bed. She said he was connected to a room downstairs and felt sick and dizzy. She talked about a yearly replay: she felt that the spirits from the sea at Eyemouth come back to the town one day every year – she said it was like coming home! She also picked up on a lady waiting for someone and a small child.

When I entered the room I felt that I wouldn’t like to be left on my own in the room for long, as I felt sick. I could pick up on the image of a child and felt a sense of loss for something. I could see a procession of men with lanterns, walking towards somewhere, and it felt that they had a sense of purpose, Above: Di sensing the man with a scar, in the back bedroom but the feeling was calm, as Back Bedroom it seemed that they were standing up for When Dean entered the bedroom, he got something, and followed a leader, it felt the sense that someone was killed, and it like they were on strike! wasn’t their fault! He also connected with fishermen, and could feel a sense of Garden loss. He could see people walking with Dean felt very dizzy in the garden, his candles being led by someone of legs were wobbly and he had a feeling of

12 Vision 10

being watched. Di felt that there was a lot of people that were stuck in a certain time walking up from the sea, she could feel water up her nose, smelt seawater and could hear a bell ringing and screams, she felt gusts of wind on her face and overall felt very strange indeed.

Kitchen When Dean entered the kitchen, he felt that there had once been human remains on the site. He picked up on a man with goofy teeth, frizzy hair and a beard, drinking out of a tankard. Dean felt that this man had been clubbed to death by two men. He said that the man was a French sailor and had been robbed when he was drunk, had felt a pain in his back, Below: Dean in the kitchen, were there once human remains here?

area, although our compass didn’t go crazy, more’s the pity! So there we have it again my friends, a little town with a big history (see panel opposite). It just goes to show that it’s not just houses and old buildings that have a dark history, sometimes a whole town can be affected and, in the case of Eyemouth, in such a sad way. I hope you enjoyed reading about our exploits. Sincere thanks this month to: Beryl Crosswaite of Camaley Study Centre and Julie Knox at Crystal Harbour.

and was found face down in what appeared to be a shallow grave. When I entered the kitchen, I felt extremely warm when everyone else was cold and the energy was very strange. When I stood near the fridge I could see what looked like an alleyway, and felt like I was going to be stabbed, almost like someone was waiting in the shadows ready to pounce and rob me. I could pick up on a small guy, foreign-looking, with dark skin. I felt sick and kept getting cold shivers. I could also pick up on a Monk in a black robe. Although he looked a bit menacing, he was not negative, just very powerful. I felt some connection to a nearby monastery, but felt that he came from a separate building and was sent out to ‘spread the word’. Overall, I felt that this was an extremely sad town; somewhere I certainly wouldn’t want to have been 100 years ago. There is such a sense of a huge loss. When Di entered she felt ‘weird’ and felt pulled towards the back room of the shop (where the fridge is). She sensed a man, saying he was under the floor and felt water around him, but that he was not connected with the disaster. She picked up on people walking up into the town from the sea. She also felt a pain in her head. We all picked up very strange readings from pendulum and dowsing rods in the

History of Eyemouth town and Crystal Harbour shop Eyemouth experienced the worst Scottish fishing disaster ever recorded, during the great storm of October 1881. On 14th October 1881, 189 fishermen and boys were killed, of these 129 were from Eyemouth. Eyemouth lost a third of it’s fleet. In Eyemouth 14th October is known as 'Black Friday.' After weeks of bad weather the local fleet were becoming impatient to go to sea and on the date in question, the sea seemed calm and untroubled in the morning. When the storm hit many boats hurried back as soon as it started, but most failed to make it back to the harbour. Of those that did, the vast majority either capsized or was smashed on the rocks. Families looked on whilst their loved ones drowned in front of them. All three mediums picked up the disaster. Julie’s shop and flat were built just before the Eyemouth disaster. When Di picked up the spirits returning home it would make sense, as a lot of the fishermen lived in the slums that were located just behind Julie’s shop …in the garden! Under the garden, tunnels run which were used by smugglers. There was also a

wall that ran past Julie’s house and up to a nearby hill, this wall collapsed on the tunnel and records say that 5-7 smugglers died. The French sailor had been picked up by other mediums: he was attacked from behind in a passageway as described by Dean and Nance. The passageway used to run by the side of the building (where Julie’s fridge is now). After the French sailor’s attack, two of his ship-mates came looking for him. When they found out what had happened, they tracked down the people responsible and threw them off the pier! Diana picked up a man underwater where Dean and Nance had picked up the French sailor – was this one of the murderers that was thrown off the pier? Julie and her friend regularly hear someone walking up and down and have also heard a repeated drum-roll, which is connected with press-gangs! Willie Spears led the fishermen in many protests against the church complaining that church funds were needed to extend the harbour. This never happened. He then led the revolt against church tithes after the Eyemouth disaster. Both Nance and Dean picked up the marches by candles/lanterns, and the presence of a leader–was this Willie Spears?

Steve Bryan investigates the legends around the Crystal skulls of Mesoamerica

I

n a darkened room shadowy figures surround a circular platform. In the dim light, you can make out twelve oddly shaped crystal objects placed on the circumference. You see that they are shaped as human skulls, eerie and beautiful. A hooded figure approaches, holding a thirteenth crystal, and slowly, and with much reverence, places it in the centre. Then, with the sound of thunder, beams of light emanate from the central skull, linking it with its companions. The shadowy figures gather closer, and watch, as pictures and words form in the air, information they hope will give details on how to save the Earth. A scene from a modern science fiction film perhaps? No, for this is an age-old myth known across the Americas. Where did the crystal skulls come from? Crystal in all its forms was certainly important to the Maya. They valued jade above gold, and indeed, the first record of the crystal skulls is linked to them. Anna Mitchell Hedges found one on her seventeenth birthday while excavating Maya ruins in 1924 with her father. Soon others were found, and those that came into contact with them began to describe their strange properties. These included healing and the appearance of strange sounds and images, as well as channelling properties for those with spiritual gifts. The messages received were far from clear. Perhaps there is some truth in the legend that only when the original thirteen are grouped together will their true purpose be revealed. However, some

14 Vision 10

common themes began to emerge. The skulls were repositories of ancient knowledge, locked in crystal, and designed to be activated when the planet was in gravest danger. The skull shape was chosen by their makers to avoid their accidental destruction. But who were those makers? Some have speculated an extra-terrestrial origin, while others put forward a case for Atlantis. Unless and until the skulls are fully activated, it is impossible to know. Some have been examined scientifically. There are no metallic cutting marks, and, unusually, the crystal has been cut against the axis, or grain, a technique that would normally lead to the material shattering. It has been estimated that to carve with such precision using diamond cutting tools would take three hundred years of concerted effort. Like their origins, their construction remains a mystery. The Maya and other Central American people believed that the world has been destroyed four times before, and that we are now living in the fifth age. They believed this age would end because of the Earth shaking. This might be a reference to widespread earthquakes, and indeed, the UN disaster agency has noted a general increase in seismic activity. We have also recently discovered the existence of ‘super’ volcanoes, which, when they erupt, will create cataclysmic

climatic changes. The shaking Earth may also refer to a collision with an asteroid or comet, another inevitable event we do not know how to avoid. There are others who believe that the ‘shaking Earth’ is an allegorical reference to humankind being

transformation for the human race? Maybe we should assemble the thirteen master skulls and simply listen to their message. This is not as easy as it seems. Many more than thirteen skulls have been discovered, we have no way of knowing which ones are the masters. Certainly some are clever forgeries and replicas. Using these would at best make the process fail, and at worst, could damage any of the master skulls present. Until there is a reliable way of identifying the original thirteen, this seems too dangerous to contemplate. But there is hope. Although clearly not everyone can obtain an original master skull, many modern ones are made for enthusiasts. Those that have them claim to have received messages from the makers of the originals. If you want to be part of this process, a word of warning. You cannot own a crystal skull; they choose their own guardians. You may see them in a shop, but unless the skull chooses you, trying to buy one is useless. If you are lucky enough to be chosen, those that have already been chosen say you will simply know. Then, no power on Earth will prevent you from obtaining the skull that has chosen you, and you will also know how it wants you to help in its purpose, which is to save the Earth from destruction and bring enlightenment.

own a crystal skull, “You cannot they choose their own guardians” ‘shook up’ on a spiritual level - the end of the Earth meaning the end of the Earth as we know it – mankind evolving enough to bring forward a golden age of peace and harmony. If the crystal skulls contain knowledge that might help us avoid catastrophes and bring enlightenment, then clearly they are hugely important. But such threats of disaster have been around for years. Why should we panic now? Well, the emergence of the crystal skulls itself may be some sort of signal. They are reported to have some sort of sentience of their own, and may well have deliberately come out of hiding at this present time. More eerily, the Maya, who were obsessed with calendars and planetary motions, and had the ability to predict these far, far into the future, never bothered to create any predictions beyond 21st December 2012. Did they believe this was the date the current age would end or is this simply a time of

Diana Jarvis explains your weird experiences. My beloved husband Alan died of a heart attack and I was left with four young children. I fought against all odds to bring them up alone and have been very lucky and proud to have such great children. I truly believe Alan has never left my side. This year, my eldest daughter Leah was married. Just before leaving the house for the ceremony, Leah looked at me with tears in her eyes and whispered “Mam, dad’s here!” I looked at her, sobbed silently and replied: “Yes love, I know.” Just at that moment a friend of mine took this photograph with his 35mm disposable camera. As you can see in the photograph there is a beautiful bright shining orb hovering above and between us. Please let me know what you think. I do believe with all my heart that there are spirits all around us who love and protect us. I know this was Alan, Christine, Fairwater, Cardiff. Diana says: Christine, I’m going to break all my rules to answer you. As I read your letter I was moved to tears by this very insistent voice in my head saying ‘Tell her it’s me, tell her it’s me!” I always give my readers both a scientific explanation and a spiritual one, as I am unable to determine which will apply from a photograph that I did not take and cannot scientifically analyse. The scientific bit, for what it is worth, is dust … but from my experience with your letter I’ll go out on a limb and say that I believe Alan was with you.

I was lying in bed with my partner, Melv (now ex) both drifting off to sleep. Suddenly, I was overcome with anxiety – as if something was entering my house and heading towards my daughter’s bedroom. At the same time, Melv jumped up – stricken with fear! He said he felt something evil and didn’t want to be in the house. My daughter Estelle woke up too. When we went back to bed, Melv was uneasy for an hour. My house is fairly new, I have been here for 4 months but it feels like forever. I feel comfortable here. Can you shed some light on this strange happening? Emma, Derbyshire. Diana’s says:When drifting into sleep we enter the hypnogogic state, not full consciousness and not deep sleep. At this point we may experience the brain ‘unloading’ (obscure disjointed images that mean nothing). It is also where we can connect with Spirit. Psychics reach this state by ‘tuning’ in. In life, there are things out there that want to scare and intimidate, in death this is much less likely. It is probable that you were all aware of a spirit that was frightened and lost themselves and you were picking up their negative emotions, it is the living we have to fear, not the dead! If you do feel uncomfortable, ask your guides for help and as an extra precaution, sprinkle salt on your front door and your windows, sage also helps. Whatever it is that happened, a sincere request for help should ensure that it doesn’t happen again.

As a child, I went out with my father to visit a friend of his in an area of Manchester I had not been to before. Before turning the corner to the street I knew exactly what would be there. Sure enough, it was just as I expected it to be. Last year whilst I lay in bed thinking about it, the name Lyndhurst Avenue came in my mind and remained there. My husband agreed to take me to where I believed the street to be and sure enough Lyndhurst Avenue was there just as I remembered. Is this an experience of a past life? If so how can I investigate further? M.D., Manchester. Diana says: This type of déjà vu is quite common. How it is possible is up for debate! Many people believe that it comes from a past-life recollection and I must admit that I am one of those people. It is interesting that you can recall the memory easily at will and that the name of the street came to you ‘just like that’. You could go back to the street and hope that some impressions come to you by themselves, or you could visit a qualified past-life hypnotherapist and see if they can take you back to that lifetime. It could be coincidence, of course, but goodness, what a coincidence!

Diana Jarvis talks to Gordon Smith about his work and his new role as medium on Most Haunted

G

ordon Smith is no stranger to the pages of Vision. His work has already made him famous and joining the Most Haunted team confirms his status as a household name. He remains philosophical however; to him it’s all about what he does, not where he does it or how much attention he gets: “It’s attitude – if you want fame, have it, if you don’t, don’t. Just do what you do. A wise person once said to me that if you take people’s praise you must take people’s criticism … so it’s better to take neither! I like to think that I am nice and accepting, but I don’t take it all to heart. One truism I hold dear is “To thine own self be true”. You can’t lie to yourself. If you’re ok with yourself, you’ve achieved a lot.” I asked him about his first impression of the Most Haunted team and his response was immediate: “Fabulous. I’ve got on well with all of the team. When I first met Karl (Beattie) and Yvette I was very keen to find out what direction Most Haunted would be taking in future episodes. I was delighted to hear that they intended to show more on the seriousness of what was being done by concentrating on phenomena.” Phenomena, it seems, is what they got whether they wanted to concentrate on it or not! I asked Gordon if he had had any unusual experiences while filming and his reply will certainly delight Most Haunted fans! “We’ve caught a full-blown apparition on camera! During a séance in one of the episodes you can see a huge ball of white light forming, which opens up and forms into a figure. It’s been sent to all the labs and they can’t explain it away. David (Wells) and I know what it is, though…” Apart from the dramatic, there are still a few funny moments.

18 Vision 10

“I guess the crew had a bit of a laugh at my expense when they saw me run away on a recent shoot. It’s not like a medium to be scared of spirits and I wasn’t … but I certainly moved fast when I was surrounded by a colony of bats. It didn’t help that they were quite free with their guano, either. The crew were in stitches!” Talking of the crew, Gordon explained that he has started a development circle with them. “Sometimes the mind plays tricks when you’re in the dark in a spooky place. If a crewmember doesn’t know how mediumship works and what is going on

move on. The method for one-to-one readings or hauntings is the same.” So has Gordon ever been “followed home” or latched on to by a spirit after an investigation? “No, I have never had a problem – the sense of having a spirit with you comes from fear, anything around you after an investigation is an energy you’ve created yourself, from fear. Why would spirits try to latch on to us, we are in a dense body and have a mindset that can’t see the vast expanse out there? There is nothing for them to gain by attaching themselves to us.” Does Gordon feel that it is the

I trust my spirit guides implicitly “ and if I am being given a message then I would feel duty-bound to pass it on ” at a spiritual level, they get frightened. For that reason, I’ve started a development circle behind-the-scenes, to help. The crew don’t feel so frightened now, as it helps them to understand.” Gordon has made his name by giving individuals messages from their loved ones. I wondered how he felt being faced with spirits on location that are troubled and don’t want to be bothered. Do they need rescuing? “I don’t find that is the case. It seems to me that spirits don’t need “rescue”. If they are haunting a place it is because they want attention to pass on a message, not because a higher force deliberately holds them there. Once the message has been delivered and they have had the attention then they become aware of their path home. If spirits are held here it is only by their own grief or confusion. Once they are shown that it is only themselves that keep them, they can

message that is the most important thing in every case? How would he feel if he was faced with a spirit that was insistent that a message should be passed on to a grieving relative when the relative didn’t believe in the afterlife at all? “I trust my spirit guides implicitly and if I am being given a message then I would feel duty-bound to pass it on, regardless. In practice, when the message is passed on it is usually received well, even if that was not thought likely at the beginning”. As Gordon mentioned his guides I asked him to tell us a little more about his guide Chi. “Chi (pronounced Chee) is an oriental man who I have worked with for many years. I have tested him at some length over time and I have built up a really trustworthy working relationship. If I can’t connect to him before I work, I simply won’t work.”

Mediums speak to Spirit constantly, but I wondered how Gordon deals with a spirit that does not have English as it’s mother tongue, how does he cope with a foreign spirit? “I’ve worked in many countries throughout the world and it is simply a case of repeating exactly what you hear. If I work abroad I have a translator and I will leave it to them to translate what I say. It is the trust factor again, I have to trust what I receive.” A lot of readers would dearly love to be able to do what Gordon does. I asked him if he felt that everybody has a gift or is it just a select few? “I think everybody has a sixth sense and it is up to them how much they develop it. A sixth sense is an ability, it becomes a gift when it is developed and shared. It takes a psychologically robust person to become a medium, but the potential is there in all of us.” So how does Gordon think that a beginner should approach development? “ It depends very much on what they want to do – if they want to develop mediumship they would be best served by joining a circle run by a well-respected medium that they themselves trust, but don’t feel overawed by. Ask yourself if they have humility and are honest? There are many groups out there and there are circles run in spiritualist churches. You can even sit with a group of friends, but it is always better in the beginning to have a distinct experienced ‘leader’ to the group.” Gordon speaks to spirit daily, but if he could choose who came forward whom would he most like to speak to on the other side? “Gandhi, for sure. He had such humility and to chat with someone like that would be amazing! In my opinion he was a higher mind incarnate in the physical, we can read about him, but it would be nice to talk to the guy himself.” Gordon is busy filming more Most Haunted, but does he find time for anything else? “I’m currently writing a book on grief, from a medium’s point of view. When someone dies there is grief on both sides and in both worlds and the medium gets to experience both sides in their work. I feel it’s important to try to pass on the perspective to help to relieve the guilt: by looking at the grief through my eyes as a medium.” So where does Gordon want to go from here? “I don’t see me doing any less work! I want to just keep enjoying what I’m doing and expanding.” And Most Haunted?

“ The phenomena captured during recent filming are amazing! I don’t think it’s critical to prove that I have found the name of someone who lived 100 years ago, because that’s public domain if you have the Internet. Anyone could find it with research. It is the phenomena and the seriousness of the investigation that will grab people’s attention and we take part in it so that people can see for sure it’s not faked. I’m looking forward to seeing people’s reactions to the new series and to filming many more”. So are we, Gordon!

O

ne of the intriguing things about the spiritual beliefs and practices of the “New World” is that there is a marked difference between the ways of the North American and South American peoples. The indigenous inhabitants of North America cared relatively little for permanent structures or breathtaking monuments. Their spirituality was based on a living, breathing commune with the natural world. Mother Earth was, they believed, a vast temple that needed no improvement. The South American peoples saw things differently. Their gods were not only to be worshipped, but also appeased. To please the gods they spent decades constructing vast edifices that dominated the landscape. Their solidity gave rise to a sense of permanency, and their permanency made those who worshipped at them feel secure. “When the gods are happy, then so are we”, could have been their motto.

The Mayan Cosmos The Mayan cosmos was made up of a complex roadmap of locations and levels situated above, on and below our physical world. These included nine “underworlds”, and it is no coincidence that many of the magnificent Mayan pyramids, such as the Jaguar Pyramid in Tikal, comprised of nine stepped layers. Each of these layers corresponded to a degree of spiritual initiation, so ascending the steps would have created within the initiate a powerful sense of both revelation and increasing awareness. After the death of the physical body the soul was said to travel to the underworld called Xibalba – a fearful place where malign deities played tricks on their new “guests”. Nine was an important number to the Mayans; nine-stepped pyramids,

nine underworlds, nine major timecycles…all signs of a religious society that put great stock on the spiritual science of numerology. The early Christian missionaries assumed – naturally, one supposes – that the Mayan cosmological levels roughly corresponded to the “eight Buddhist hells”, or even more roughly to early Christian ideas that Hell was comprised of different layers, each one more hideous than the one above. This wasn’t true, of course; the nine cosmological worlds of the Maya seemed to represent great changes in nature, starting with the beginning of Creation and ending with the establishment of a new era of peace and spirituality sometime around the year 2011/12. The imminence of this new era may explain why there has been a resurgence of Mayan spirituality in recent times. Our knowledge of Mayan spirituality is still quite patchy. We can

tell much by examining the glyphs that decorate the Mayan temples and other buildings. Unfortunately, virtually all the Mayan books were destroyed by the Spanish invaders under the supervision of clerics such as Friar Diego de Landa (1524-1579), who later remarked, “We found a large number of books, but as they contained nothing except the superstition and lies of the Devil, we burned them all. The inhabitants regretted this to an amazing degree, and our actions caused them much affliction”. Fortunately the Maya managed to hide their few remaining books in some caves. However, the jungle humidity has damaged them severely and only remnants remain. Three that survived substantially can now be found on display in three European museums. A Deity for Every Occasion The Mayans had many gods, and,

indeed, they believed that their spiritual-cum-political leaders were direct descendants of the deities they worshipped. In line with the beliefs of Erich von Daniken, the Mayans taught that the gods had at one time seeded the earth with life after travelling here from another realm aeons ago. To the Mayans the supreme deity was the formidable Kukulkan, the “Feathered Serpent, Master of the Resurrection and Lord of Reincarnation”. Kukulkan is the Mayan equivalent of the Aztec Quetzalcoatl. Actually, the Maya had over two hundred gods, including Ahmakiq the god of crop fertility, Ix Chel the moon goddess, Nacon the war god and Yum Kaax the god of corn. Some gods were very specific, such as Acat the god of tattoo artists, Zots the god of caves, Lacandon the god of foreigners and Ah Muzencab the god of bees. (If you’re interested in delving further into the world of Mayan gods and goddesses. The oral traditions handed down by the Maya give a fascinating insight into the way they pictured their gods. The legends are full of soap-opera drama, including adultery, murder and deception. Through it all hope reigned eternal, however, and humans believed that if they could keep the gods happy they would probably be rewarded with a happy life.

Rituals and Ceremonies Mayan rituals and ceremonies were normally elaborate affairs. The plazas and temples would be decorated with huge, feathered tapestries, and bunches of fruit – particularly bananas – would be hung around doorways and other entrances. Painted and feathered

dancers with bells tied to their ankles and wrists would make their way through the crowds, chanting and blowing eagle whistles. The worshippers gathered there – the more prominent of whom would have earlier taken a ritual steam-bath similar to a sauna or Native American sweat lodge – would be dressed in their finest feathered robes and headdresses. The Mayan new year began in July, and it was during this month that the priests carried out the bulk of their sacrifices and ceremonies in an effort to commune with their gods. Worshippers generally made one of four types of offering; fruit, flowers, maize or blood. The blood would be their own, and would be collected in small, decorative bowls after piercing their nose, lips, tongue or private parts. Mayan spirituality was, and still is, enigmatic. In our modern era we perhaps find the sacrificial aspect unpleasant, and yet the evidence suggests that, provided they could keep their deities appeased, the Maya were a buoyant, optimistic people with much to live for.

Lyz Cooper takes us on a fascinating journey into the sounds and spirit of the Maya.

S

ound has been used for thousands of years to balance mind, body and spirit and to communicate with the divine realms. Although sound has been used by many different civilisations and cultures, in recent years, sound is being remembered, adapted and developed as a powerful tool for healing and transformation. If you are interested in working with sound for your own self development, what better place to start than with the fairy-like sounds of the Mayan balls, which are beautiful to work with. If you already work with sound, then a couple of these balls with different tones are a valuable addition to any sound practitioners toolkit. The Mayan balls are handmade following a tradition of several centuries, because of this, no two will sound the same. As with many sacred tools, these balls are not unique to the Maya. These little metal balls with chimes inside have been used by many cultures to ward off evil spirits, cleanse spaces and protect the wearer from harm. They are also used for relaxation, healing and in meditation, and by shamans and shamankas to cleanse the environment before and after ceremonies. Often, Mayan balls come with a small ring attached, to thread a ribbon or chain through and wear them around your neck. The gentle tinkling sound of the chimes inside help the wearer to feel comforted and protected. Other styles of music balls include ones that are hand-held or have handles attached (rather like oldfashioned baby’s rattles). Hand-held spheres can be put into a small bag or and shaken, blending the different tones of the balls together.

Sound has been used in many cultures to change and move energies. At The British Academy of Sound Therapy, sound practitioners use the music balls as a transitional sound between the crystal bowls and the grounding tools. It is like sprinkling their clients’ aura with fairy dust. People report that this gives the sensation of the aura being filled with a thousand little rainbow coloured droplets of light, sending ripples of energy throughout the system – it is a wonderful treat for anyone coming for a sound therapy treatment. As well as being used as part of a treatment, the Mayan balls can be used on their own to work in a specific part of the aura or within a room. If you are working on yourself, shake the ball around your body concentrating on the areas you wish to balance. Prayers and mantras can be infused into the ball and then shaken out through the sound over the body like an energetic salt shaker! There are Chinese and Balinese versions of these musical balls – sometimes known as ‘Harmony or

Health’ balls, the Chinese balls are often enamelled and decorated with dragons, again for protection and good health and date as far back as the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). The Chinese system of using these balls is to roll them around in your hands. The massaging action of the balls on the acupressure points of the hands help promote the free-flow of chi around the system as well as exercising the hands and arms. A set of Chinese Health Balls will consist of a ‘male’ ball which has a lower tone and a ‘female’ ball which has a higher tone. Together these work on the Yin-Yang Male-Female energy balance. The Balinese harmony balls have a very musical nature with multi-faceted tones, which dance from the ball when shaken. These are used for consecrating spaces at the end of a space clearing ceremony as well as working within the auric field during a sound therapy treatment. If you are interested in working with sound, would like to purchase a harmony ball or would like to know more about the work of Lyz Cooper and the British Academy of Sound Therapy, please contact 01273 835811.

Mayan expert Dr Ronald Bonewitz talks with Diana Jarvis about the Maya and his Maya Deck oracle, based on actual Mayan divination techniques

D

r Ronald Bonewitz has spent a lifetime working with ancient cultures and techniques and has a special interest in the Maya. When working as a professional pilot he spent a considerable amount of time flying over Mayan sites and was befriended by the living Maya and spent some time in their company, where he learnt of their spirituality and beliefs. The ancient Maya were perhaps the most highly evolved of all ancient Mesoamerican cultures, and, indeed of

24 Vision 10

most ancient civilizations. Occupying the highland and lowland areas of Yucatan, Belize, Guatamala and Honduras around 250BC, they possessed a complex and expressive written language, an advanced mathematical system, a calendar more accurate than our own, and a system of prediction and divination second to none. Their astronomy was advanced enough to predict eclipses hundreds of years in advance. Their world-view echoes traditional eastern thought; the unity and

inter-relation of all things, both on the earth and beyond it. Today the Maya are best known for their calendar, and the rapidly approaching date marking the end of the current Mayan calendar cycle on 21 December 2012. The Mayan calendar actually pre-dates the Mayans, but is commonly connected with them. The fact that it ends abruptly has prompted a number of theories. One theory is that a cataclysmic event will end the world. Another is that humankind will evolve as a species and reach a new

They (the Maya) possessed a complex and “intricately expressive written language, an advanced mathematical system, a calendar more accurate than our own, and a system of prediction and divination second to none”

cycle of development. A third is that it just ended because it showed the end of one of their cycles and that is all. We will have to wait and see. Certainly, that date does coincide with a rare astronomical event (see article on P62) so it will be worth watching for, regardless! Ron’s work and understanding of the Maya has drawn him into creating a new oracle based on their system of divination. There are so many different oracles on the market, it is difficult to see how another could be any better or offer

anything not already offered. I will have to admit that I was very surprised at the depth of the reading that I got from Ron with his cards. It seemed that they knew my inner thoughts, which is disconcerting, to say the least! Ron developed the deck as a means of personal growth as well as a method of divination. “Spiritual growth is hard work”, he says. The cards are not meant to be instant fixes for our problems, but are meant to show us underlying trends, indicating what moves us, both within and without. Our lives, as the Maya correctly perceived, are a complex interweaving of many strands – and an understanding of those strands, is an invaluable tool in our own personal growth. The deck recreates the inner world of the Maya priesthood, putting the reader directly into the world of the Maya. The Mayan gods and goddesses are found within their deck, their messages are not as harsh as one would think, but honest and straightforward. Working with the deck seemed to be a lot easier than I thought it would be. Because of the Maya’s belief in the overworld and underworld as well as the importance of the four directions, the cards are laid out to reflect these. The cards are shuffled a total of four times to reflect the four directions. They are also reversed during these shuffles, to show the play of light and dark in our lives: a more accurate way of describing the

effects is to say that the upright are noticeable influences and the reversed are the unseen. After the shuffle, the cards are laid out in a series of two concentric circles, with a middle card, which is the main influence. I had asked Ron if he could give me a simple general reading so that I could get an idea of how cards with a Mayan influence would speak to me. They spoke very clearly and with considerable depth. Ron was able to be specific about my childhood traumas: I was never abused or treated with anything but love, but nonetheless I was strongly affected by an unusual upbringing. I was also unfortunate enough to have 8 deaths in my family in 3 years (both my parents and both sets of grandparents included). As a pre-teen, this affected my outlook and what I became: and it still does. Ron was able to tell this from the cards and, more to the point, to mention it at a time where my past was uppermost in my mind because we had met at a location that my father used to take me to when I was young. Ron had no idea of this! He clearly described my personality traits and what challenges I am currently facing, he also managed to give me some indication of the future which matched almost precisely what I had been told by a number of psychics! As Ron was the creator of the cards, I would expect him to be able to read them well, but when I got home, I wondered if I would be able to just pick them up and use them. I am an experienced Tarot reader, but I have never seen this pack in my life. I could get an accurate reading on a question within 2 minutes and a look at the book: so I would think with some application anyone could use them with practice. As a tool for self-understanding and spiritual growth I think these cards connect with an ancient wisdom which still fascinates us and endures today.

If you would like a chance to explore the divination techniques of the Maya, don’t miss our competition on P46, we have 10 signed copies of Ron’s pack to give away!

Anna Kaye.

Michael Looking Coyote.

Do you have a problem which you lack intuition to solve? Do you have any questions about the future to which you seek answers? Native American Michael Looking Coyote will use his Spirit Stones and clairvoyant medium Anna Kaye will consult her Tarot to offer a fresh view on matters.

Help me reach my potential I have been told by different mediums over the years that I am not using my full potential and I need to branch out and take the opportunities that are put in front of me, but I can never see the direction I need to go in or how to get there. Please help. Anon

Michael Looking Coyote’s Spirit Stone Reading: The Bobcat, the Alligator. You know, it never fails to amaze me how other people always think they’re better at setting out our spiritual agenda and timetable than we are ourselves! You are a gentle, conscientious person, and the very fact that you’ve written to us indicates that you sincerely want to lead an active, spiritual life in the service of others. Both the Bobcat and the Alligator signify patience. Each person’s life is like a river. It meanders where both its natural flow and gravity take it. Just as water always finds its own level, as you walk through your life be content in the knowledge that, when the time is right, Great Mystery will open up the path that is right for you. You will not need to be shepherded along by well-meaning but interfering “counsellors”. Meanwhile, enjoy whatever spirit offers you until the Creator decides the time is right to tell you more.

Anna Kaye’s Tarot Reading: The Chariot, the Magician, the Emperor Communication is important at the moment. This is the message of the Chariot, and you must make sure you voice your opinions. The Emperor represents a strong person who has firm foundations with home, family and business. I feel the emperor is you as you move forward. The Magician is telling you to work more on the creative side of your nature, and the mediums you’ve seen in the past were telling you that you have a strong creative talent and you should use it, whether it be by writing, painting or designing. You are also very good at helping others, but now it is time to help yourself and decide what it is you really want. I sense a man in spirit who is beside you all the way, and remember - the universe has an uncanny way of putting us in the right place at the right time.

Fear of dying Seven years ago I had one of my breasts removed due to cancer. I am now cancer-free and my doctor says there is no reason why I shouldn’t live a long and healthy life. You would think I would be relieved and happy, but I’m not. Every day I live in terror that the cancer will return and kill me. Fear of dying is ruining my life. What can I do? Please help me. Miriam, Hackney.

Michael Looking Coyote’s Spirit Stone Reading: The Rabbit, the Eagle Rabbit medicine is all about fear, and you have a lot of rabbit medicine! The truth is that none of us know how long we will live. This may sound depressing, but your situation is no different to every other human being on the face of the planet. What you need to do is stop this fear eating away at you, because fear itself is a negative emotion that can affect the immune system and, ironically, make you ill. Eagle says you have a good relationship with the Creator and a highly-developed spiritual sensitivity. You know that there is another world beyond this one, so why do you fear? I suspect you worry not so much for yourself, but for those you would leave behind. Focus on spiritual things and reinforce your faith in an afterlife. When the fear goes, live for the moment and enjoy the rest of what the spirits tell me will be a reasonably long and happy life.

Anna Kaye’s Tarot Reading: The Magician, the Empress, the Tower. I’m happy that you’ve had the “all clear”, but after going through such a traumatic experience, I’m not surprised you are worrying. The fact of the matter is: death comes to us all, and worrying about it doesn’t change the inevitable and tells your subconscious that it is okay to be ill. The Magician tells me that you are a creative person. Write down your experiences, share them and talk about your fears. There are support groups for women who have undergone mastectomies. The Empress is telling you this is a time of growth and expansion and you must learn from this. I feel you are been called to help others. You are a caring person. The Tower tells me that when you think you have lost everything there is a light at the end of the tunnel. You will overcome this fear because you are strong.

Michael Looking Coyote’s Spirit Stone Reading: The Chipmunk, the Horse. What I think is that you should not take up this lady’s kind but misguided offer. Free will is an important spiritual concept and interfering with it for personal reasons inevitably brings bad results. Although I understand your anguish, how would you feel if you had left your wife and she magically bound you to her forever against your will? Although you love her, you must let her reach her own decision without outside interference. Chipmunk says she is still undecided about returning and will be so for some time yet The good news is that Horse indicates your life taking a radically new direction full of exciting possibilities. Whether your wife returns or not, you will recover from this setback and, next year at this time, be happier than you have been in a long, long time – without the aid of spells that, allegedly, make people act against their own judgement.

Anna Kaye’s Tarot Reading: The Tower, the Empress, the Chariot. Do not take up this offer. It would be quite wrong of you to do so. You shouldn’t perform magic to make a person do something against their will. Magic must conform to the laws of the Wiccan Rede: Harm none, do as ye will and ever mind the rule of three. What you send out comes back to thee. Maybe your wife would come back, but not for the right reasons and you don’t want that. Please respect her wishes and give her the time she needs. The Tower tells me that you feel your world has come to an end, but don’t despair. This is temporary. The Emperor says you will be in a strong position again and the Chariot tells me the communication between you and you wife will be fine. You will work through this - without magic.

Pet Problems My partner and I are at odds with each other. We have a house full of pets which I adore, but my husband can’t stand them. He continually moans about hairs on the sofa, cat food on the kitchen benches, etc. Yesterday he found a few little cat hairs on his dinner plate and went mad with me, saying that if things didn’t get sorted out soon he’d have to consider moving out. To be honest, because he over-reacted to such a degree I had a fit of the giggles and this made things worse. How can I get him to see things in perspective? Lisa, Burnley

Spells trouble My wife has left me and I can’t live without her. She says she may come back, but for now she needs some time away from me to think about the future. Her best friend is a witch and has tried to talk my wife into coming home, but it hasn’t worked. Now she’s offered to do some sort of ritual, which she says will make my wife return home and stay with me forever. I miss my wife so much I am very tempted to take up her offer. What do you think? Harry, Bournemouth.

Michael Looking Coyote’s Spirit Stone Reading: The Coyote, the Ant Well, you could try growing up a little and being more sensitive to your partner’s feelings! Coyote indicates that your perception of this domestic fracas is totally skewed. You think your partner is over-reacting, but I disagree. He has every right to be concerned about domestic hygiene issues and cat hairs on a dinner plate are not hygienic. The Ant says you have work to do. On a physical level you need to pay more attention to domestic issues and keep both your pets and their detritus away from areas where you prepare food. On an emotional level, you need to work at restoring your partner’s confidence in you. Your partner has every right to feel aggrieved at your attitude. However, he does love you very much. The bottom line is this: keep your menagerie in check and you’ll have your partner for a long, long time.

Anna Kaye’s Tarot Reading: The High Priestess, the Magician, the Emperor. Oh Lisa, how could you? Your partner has a right to disagree on the hygiene issues alone! You say your partner does not like the pets, but he has allowed you to keep them. I think he deserves to have his meals served minus the animal hairs. Stop being selfish. The High Priestess is telling you to follow your intuition. She is the goddess of the Tarot, and you must take on her persona and become the domestic goddess. The Magician is telling you about working together with your partner to solve these domestic issues. My feeling is that you are feeling low at this moment otherwise you would not laugh at your partner’s feelings about this problem. The Emperor is saying you have a good, solid relationship, so don’t jeopardise this by being insensitive to your partner’s feelings. Come on, Lisa - get cleaning or we’ll phone Grime Watch!

T

he rain forests of Central America are dense, steamy and hostile. Jaguars, poisonous snakes, and leeches thrive here, adding to the dangers. Hidden in the depths are the remains of the cities of the Maya, long abandoned by their inhabitants, whose descendants now live a simpler life in the surrounding villages. The first sign of such a ruined city is often the tall imposing shape of a temple appearing through the tree line. The design is based on the standard Mayan hut, but made of stone, and sitting on top of a huge stepped pyramid. The roof of the temple often has a ‘comb’, and in the heyday of the Maya would also have had representations of the local ruler and gods staring out across the forest, proclaiming the might and majesty of the city. There are two types of pyramid. Some have sides so steep, and steps so large that they cannot be climbed. These are sacred sites, designed by their makers to be untouched. The others have

Steve Bryan wanders the rain forests of Central America to discover the lost wisdom of the Mayan temples stairways cut into the rock faces, and it is these that serve as platforms for the Mayan temples. Why did the Maya construct their temples in this way? Certainly such elevation enabled ceremonies to be easily visible. There is also some symbolic importance to being nearer the heavens, and therefore the gods. But why pyramids? There is a seductive echo to the Egyptians on the other side of the world, and Thor Heyerdahl showed conclusively that there could have been contact between Egypt and America when he sailed the Atlantic in his papyrus boat ‘Ra’. Others conclude that the existence of such structures on both sides of the Atlantic indicates a common influence on both, perhaps from Atlantis,

the temples were placed to catch “ sunlight on significant dates, many catch the first rays of the solstice ” or from an extra-terrestrial source. Doubters say that the pyramids are different; the Mayan ones are stepped, and have flat tops. However, the earliest Egyptian pyramids were also stepped; the familiar smooth-sided shape was a later innovation. More difficult to

28 Vision 10

explain are the time differences; the Egyptian pyramids were built around 2000 BC, whereas the Mayan temple pyramids appear to have been built between 200-900 AD. Is it not possible, however, that the memory of their construction, whether from Atlantis or Egypt, survived, and only achieved expression when the civilisation had the means to undertake such a task? How were such pyramids and the temples built? The Maya had no metal tools, and although they could draw on the architectural traditions of the earlier Olmec and Toltec cultures, they had no significant experience in monumental building. It is possible they were constructed entirely by hand, using diamond and other crystal cutting devices, supplemented by the use of

abrasive sand and water techniques. Crystals were rare and holy to the Maya, however, and it is difficult to imagine that they would subject such sacred materials to a mundane use. Certainly the construction seems to have evolved over

time; the later temples are more expertly put together, and often built on top of the earlier structures to achieve even greater height. Such evolution of technique does not entirely rule out the possibility that the Maya were able to draw on alternative and perhaps more mystic means. Interestingly the temples were placed to catch sunlight on significant dates, many catch the first rays of the solstice. Others, at first sight appearing random in their orientation, turn out to be aligned to the wanderings of the planets, particularly Venus. At the temple of Chichen Itza, this orientation produces a dazzling effect of a serpent sliding down the steps at midsummer sunrise. The temples had a range of functions. First, they were centres of worship. The building itself appears to have been relatively unimportant in this. Their interiors are small, and appear to have been used mainly for storage. But they did provide the backcloth for the ceremonies held on the platform. The temples also served as observatories. Set above the height of the trees, they were perfect for the Maya to observe the heavens. Astronomy and astrology were sciences the Maya excelled in. Their complex calendars predicted eclipses, conjunctions of the planets, and other phenomena. They were particularly interested in the planet Venus. Their winged serpent god was associated with it. Some have speculated that perhaps at some stage Venus’s orbit came closer to ours than it does now, giving rise to its significance in the Mayan world. Others suggest that inhabitants of that planet gave the Maya some of their arcane knowledge. The most famous of the temples have been cleared of vegetation, and are part of the usual tourist itinerary. Many come to wonder at the majesty of their construction at places such as Chichen Itza, Palenque, Uxmel and Tikal. Some temples remain less disturbed, and visitors to these have marvelled at the psychic energy seeming to emanate from them. The mystery of these temples, and the pyramids of the rain forest on which they stand remain with us today, and are experienced by thousands.

The temples also served as “observatories. Set above the

This month Samantha Hamilton takes us on a tour of some simple techniques you can use to see your psychic skills in action almost immediately!

Create calmness and become sensitive.

T

he ability to sense atmospheres is the basis of a lot of psychic work because once you can do that, you will be able to work up to sensing spirit and other realms. To feel atmospheres accurately you need to be balanced and calm. The whole of the physical body is so sensitive that it is aware of what is in our aura. When you are in a state of fear, parts of your body become immobile while other parts try to distance themselves and this makes it impossible to be sensitive to any degree. When trying to sense you need to picture what it is you want to achieve in your mind, sensing the feelings in your body. Some people get clear and vivid pictures but most people do not.

If you are taking part in a guided meditation and are asked to imagine or sense an energy running down your spine you can do it with your eyes open or closed. Sense/feel/imagine/visualize this energy moving down through you. If you cannot feel it put it there with your mind, trust that the process is working. You should be able to experience the results even if it feels very light and subtle. The more you practice, the more comfortable you will feel with this process. Energy flows in the direction of your thoughts and your focus. You can create specific atmospheres. If you think of a bubble of light around you, your psyche moulds the energy into the shape of the bubble – thoughts create the reality! The world of the psychic is a subtle world, so do not expect bright or colourful imagery or powerful experiences. This is why there is often scepticism about its very existence! Practice feeling/sensing with a friend. Stand arm’s-length apart from your friend with your hands out in front of you, palms facing each other. Concentrate on your hands and imagine that there are sparks of energy coming out from the fingertips of one hand and

flowing through to the other. Feel and ‘see’ in your mind’s eye this energy, like white beams. Ask your friend to gently move one of her hands through the space between yours, from top to bottom. He/she should be able to feel what you are imagining, in the form of pins and needles or a gentle heat. Try this again, with you as the one who feels and your friend as the one who ‘sends’. With practice you should be able to really feel the results of your efforts and this method will also help you to become more aware of other realms, both within and without.

The Pendulum

A pendulum can be made of a variety of substances; wood, crystal, metal – they all work. You can buy one especially for the task, but in the meantime you can practice by using a ring on a piece of cotton. An average size pendulum is about 2-5 cm in diameter and 2-5 cm long. Hold the pendulum cord/string in your writing-hand, between your forefinger and thumb enabling you to form a circle. Your arm should be firmly braced and relaxed. The first thing you need to do is to find out how the pendulum will communicate its answers to you. Relax and mentally ask the pendulum to show you a positive or ‘Yes’ response. The pendulum will start to swing of its own accord, it may perhaps move in a circle, move from side to side or North and South. Take note of this and then ask for a negative or ‘No’ response. It should swing again, with a different answer. If you can’t get these at first, don’t give up!

Common Uses for the pendulum

Traditionally a wedding ring would be threaded onto some cotton and held over the bump of a pregnant woman – the story goes that if the pendulum swings forwards and backwards the child will be a boy, if it swings in a circle it is a girl.

30 Vision 10

The pendulum can be used for many things (and it does work for predicting the sex of a baby). Try using it to find an object lost in your house. Draw a plan of the outline of the rooms in your house and hold the pendulum over it. Ask it to show you where the object is and move it gently over each room. When you get a positive response, that’s the place to look! The pendulum also works well in paranormally-active places to dowse areas of high activity, just walk around holding your pendulum steady and ask it to show you where there is likely to be activity. Set up your cameras and equipment where it suggests and watch the results! You can also use this tool to balance areas in the body, such as the seven main chakra points, the list is as limited as your imagination and with practice, you will be able to use this tool well. One word of warning – do not overuse it! It will not work accurately to predict lottery numbers and can turn out to be more of a curse than a help if you rely on it totally and forget to make your own decisions! To learn how to dowse with divining rods, see the article on P47.

Psychometry

The only way to enhance psychic gifts is to practice. Once you have the confidence to try out your psychic skills try and be relaxed and open minded, so you can be sure that the correct information will flow more easily to you. I would like to introduce you to a technique called Psychometry. You can do this with a friend or an acquaintance or within a psychic circle. This skill will help you to determine someone’s present, past and sometimes future. A haunted place has vibrations

and many of us have the sensitivity (whether we know it or not), to pick up the energy in that particular place. Objects worn by a person also retain energy. By holding a piece of jewellery that belongs to the person, it’s possible to tune into them and receive all kinds of details about them– for example if they are just about to move, meet their future partner, how many children they have, whether they will succeed in achieving their goals and names from their past, present or future.

Step 1

Borrow something belonging to a friend, preferable something that has been worn for a year or more, this will make the task easier. Your friend will know the history of the object, but you shouldn’t. You are now going to try to describe the life and character of the owner.

Step 2

Relax and just let you mind go with the flow, don’t force thoughts out, but try to concentrate on the job in hand without letting your own thoughts intrude. It doesn’t matter if you pick up on information that does not make sense to you, try not to judge the information you receive. Say exactly what comes to your mind, trusting that you will be given something relevant and not berating yourself if it isn’t. Do not change what you feel or sense, however strange it may sound, say exactly what comes into your head.

assume it’s your friend that owns it, or a relative, say what you feel. Ask for an image of the owner of the object. Are they sad, happy anxious or shy? Try to detect what kind of job they do and the skills they have. Describe their positive attributes. If you see symbols say what the symbols mean to you – Spirit will try to talk to you in terms that you understand. If you see a black cat in your mind – does that mean luck or bad luck? Some people think a black cat is lucky – others dread the image. What do YOU think? It is what it means to you personally and not anyone else. You may just want to say that you’ve seen a black cat and then say that you think they are lucky – it may mean something else to the person that has you are reading for, but you will have given all that you can.

Step 4

Once you have given the description of the owner of the jewellery and their characteristics, use your intuition to pick up on some details that would be important to them. What kind of past did they have? What was their memory of their childhood? What were their parents like? What did they most like doing?

Step 5

Ask your friend how much of the information that was given was correct. You will almost certainly be very surprised in how much you got right! Remember that practice makes perfect – one attempt is not enough. All psychics started where you are now, there is no reason why you cannot be able to tap and use the abilities that they do. Enjoy – and do let Vision know of your results!

Step 3

Try to describe the person who owns the object. Do not

Diana Jarvis explores the technique of Treasure Mapping and explains how adults and children alike can create a map to achieve their dreams

36 Vision 10

I

f someone says to you that it would be a great idea to create a Treasure Map, I’m sure you would be thinking of pirates, gold dubloons and a parrot saying ‘Pieces of Eight’. The process of Treasure-mapping does document a path to hidden gold; but it is the gold of achieving your desires and dreams and this is not always in pieces of eight! When I first heard of treasure-mapping I thought that the technique could not possibly work, it was simply a way of reminding you of all that you do not have … and besides, didn’t it just increase avarice and envy? Not so. Visualising your dreams to make them reality is a method of employing your natural emotions to power both yourself and the cosmos to make them manifest. It focusses you, it reminds you of what you already have and it helps you to find your life path. And it works! If employed correctly it will also allow your subconscious mind to show you what you really do desire and need: not always an easy thing to determine. Treasure-mapping can be employed for anything: love, wealth, happiness, career – the list is endless. So if this all sounds great to you, you will be wondering what the catch is, or how difficult it is going to be.

Treasure-mapping is remarkably easy. Get a large, clean piece of paper – A3 size is excellent, but A4 or larger will do. Get together some coloured pens and some colour magazines of any type You will also need glue and scissors.

Making the map: Look at the clean piece of paper and be aware that this is going to be a representation of your life path (obviously not in it’s entirety!). Think of all the wonderful things you already have – health, children, a roof over your head, love, the sun, the birdsong in the garden – whatever inspires you. Think for a moment of where that all comes from – whether you believe in a god, goddess, both or neither, it all comes from somewhere. Even if you resort to thanking the universe itself, be thankful. Now think of a way you can express those thanks and make this the border of your paper. For example: my own beliefs are nicely categorised by the Grecian snake of the world Ourobouros, who eats his tail but is renewed. He represents the neverending circle of life, death and rebirth and reminds me of my own version of existence and deity. My map has

Now you need to make the paper yours and the map on it yours. Cut out your name, (first and last names will do), in type cut from any of the magazines. Don’t write it, a pictorial image, such as type, is more powerful than a written one. Choose letters and colours that appeal to you. Next, choose a phrase that motivates you, keep it simple. If you can find a picture that portrays your phrase, that’s even better than the words. My map has the phrase ‘Seek and ye shall find’, because I believe that most things we enjoy on the path of life are those we’ve found for ourselves, albeit with a little divine intervention! You must select a phrase that really means something to you. Now it’s time to select some images for you map. Look through your piles of magazines very carefully and cut out any that you have an emotional reaction to. The phrase emotional is important – don’t pick the make of car that you would really like, pick the picture that best emulates how you would feel if you had that car! This is especially important if you are treasure-mapping love on your plan – you must pick pictures that portray how you would like to be treated in a relationship, what

The process of Treasure“ mapping does document a path to hidden gold; but it is the gold of achieving your desires and dreams”

Ourobouros as a border, encircling my hopes and keeping them safe. You may find a symbolic image like mine is appropriate for you, or perhaps a simple line around your paper, or one made of hearts to represent divine love. Any of these and anything your imagination suggests will do.

values you would like to share and so on. Avoid picking a particular person that you recognise or desire – allow the map to make sure you get someone that is perfect for you in all ways, not just looks. All items should be chosen to portray how much you want something – never how you will get it. Put aside all the

images you have chosen. You may need to go through the magazines again before you are done, or you may find that you can discard some images. You can treasure-map for health, (pick images that in your opinion best reflect what it’s like to be perfectly healthy), wealth (choose a picture of a bill that you need paying and cross through it) and career (pick a picture that best shows how you would feel if you had the perfect job) to name but a few things. You can also treasure-map for particular items if you wish. Stick the items carefully from left to right on your map. The order you put them on is important. Choose the item that you are most likely to be able to obtain (a new coat) and follow this, in order, until you reach the item that it will probably take longest to obtain (the Villa in France with it’s own private beach, jetty, motor-boat and accompanying millionaire film-star). Think carefully about how happy you will be when you achieve your goals, look at each picture as you place it and really get fired up about how good you will feel when you have it. When you have made your map and you are happy with it, bless it in any way you feel appropriate. A simple ‘Thank You for what I am about to receive’ will do. Notice that this phrase assumes you will get it. This is important, don’t choose a phrase to thank a deity for listening and hope they might sort it out – choose one that thanks the deity because they will. Ask and you shall receive’ is the catchphrase - not ‘Ask and you’ll get it sometime, maybe, if I can be bothered’. Lastly, put the map somewhere where you will frequently see it and be reminded of all that you wish for and all that you have achieved. If you wish to keep a private place for your map, make sure you visit it often. Enjoy the emotions when you see it, but let it go the rest of the time. Trust in the universal power of abundance and see it come true!

Psychic artist George David Fryer introduces us to connecting with our spirit guides in the first of two articles

L

et me introduce myself; I am George David Fryer and I am a psychic artist and spiritual teacher who has been working with spirit guides for the last ten years. I produce their portraits and channel their words of wisdom and guidance. As I travel around the country appearing at shows and workshops I have become aware of the lack of understanding and the myths many people hold regarding spirit guides; so when I was asked to write a number of articles on the subject I was delighted to accept. “What are spirit guides”? and “Do I have one”? are the most common questions I get asked. Spirit guides are energy beings like we are. Yes, we have a physical body but our true essence is an energy form, which inhabits a physical form until we separate from it when we “die”. I say “die” in quotation marks, for in reality we do not die, we simply let go of the denser energy around us we call the physical body. The main difference between us and Spirit is that we have the physical form and the beings called guides do not; they have moved beyond the need to experience life in that form but choose to help and assist us as we try to gain more wisdom and experience in a physical dimension. We all have access to guides, they are helping us in many ways. Most of us are not aware of our guides because they operate on finer wavebands of energy and their presence is often subtle and gentle. We are usually focussed so much on our physical environment and have lots of mental chatter going on, that we don’t notice them.

38 Vision 10

Guides can and do appear in many forms, nationalities and from any historical period; they may be Native American Indians, Chinese, gurus, sages, monks and nuns, they may be anybody of any race, creed or historical background. They may appear as forms of colour or light. Some adopt the appearance they held in a previous earth life, sometimes a life they had shared with you in some form. They may appear in a male form if their work has to be positive, direct and assertive, or feminine if they have to be more nurturing or caring. Departed relatives may also be wishing to help you, but some caution is advised here for though their love and concern for you is without question, their guidance may not be of the highest value to you if they had not been developed in spiritual matters whilst on the earth plane. All guidance should be judged by

mastery and the skills required to communicate clearly and coherently with us. It takes enormous amounts of energy on their part to reach our physical plane. Communication with guides requires a change in the energy vibration levels of both you and the guide who is trying to “get through” to you. Your energy signal or frequency has to rise and usually the guide’s energy vibration has to lower. You have to physically slow down too (for this paradoxically helps us raise or speed up our energy vibration), and quieten the mind to pick up on the energy thought forms being sent by the guide. I will include some exercises in this and in later articles, which will help when you attempt to connect with your guide. My first guide, called Godan, first appeared to me in a dream. Guides often work with us in this way as in our

Guides can and do appear in many “forms, nationalities and from any

the importance and quality of the information of the messages received. It is important not to overestimate them though, because they generally have access to information that is unavailable to us on the physical plane. However, they can and do make mistakes so you should not assume they are infallible and therefore act mindlessly on their information. Most souls inhabit the astral plane when they die for they are not developed enough to reach the higher planes of reality where the higher guides reside. Many of the higher guides who come from these dimensions have developed and evolved a high level of

sleep state our brain waves have changed and are we are more receptive to information downloads. The guides will work with us on many levels and they often use metaphor or symbolism to assist us, that is why our dreams sometimes seem abstract and disjointed. “Coincidence” or synchronicity as I prefer to call it, is a form of physical guidance. Once, whilst doing a reading for a lady, every time I passed on to her information I was receiving from her guide she would reply “well that’s a coincidence” or “there’s another coincidence”. At the end of the reading she turned to me and asked me if I had a name for her guide. Before I could ask her guide what his name was he said

“Tell her my name is Coincidence”. Yes, a lot of coincidences are, in fact, your guides communicating with you through the physical plane by arranging events to draw your attention to matters around you. Books falling off shelves, feathers in the most unlikely places, the same message or phase coming from different sources is the work of the guides. Another question I am usually asked is “How can I be sure I am attracting a good guide?” Well, high level guides help you with letting go of fear, they offer joy, self love and assist your personal and spiritual growth. They will not frighten, flatter or bully you, there are no “must do’s” and they do not say that theirs is the only way, the only truth there is and they usually avoid prediction. Their messages are usually uplifting and inspiring and never negative in any form. Contact may be made on occasions with less evolved entities. How do we recognise these beings? Usually the content of their messages shows their level of growth. If they are working on your ego, encouraging you to act in a way which is non-loving, trivial, if they are giving you advice which brings up your fears and anxieties, then these beings may be from the lower astral plane and are trying to experience life through you; they may not even know they have died and left the earth plane. You must be very firm with such beings and cut the link. Telling the entity to go to the Light in the name of Archangel Michael, Christ or some other light-filled deity/energy will also move the entity on. Many people ask me how often one should attempt to channel guides and I always suggest a regular session. It requires practice to develop a strong and clear connection, fifteen minutes each day or a longer period once a week will be immensely beneficial. At times the connection will be strong and clear, at other times difficult and undefined. Do not worry if results do not appear quickly and don’t criticise yourself at these times for other circumstances on many levels

may be restricting the connection. First of all you need to get yourself into a relaxed calm state of mind, wearing loose and comfortable clothing helps; find a place where you are alone and won’t be disturbed for at least fifteen minutes, play some gentle and relaxing music with the volume turned down. It is best not to do this when you are tired for you may well fall asleep. Sit in a comfortable chair, close your eyes and just focus on your breathing. Slow your breathing down and find a level where the in-breath and out-breath are regular and of equal length. Breathe in for the count of three. Hold your breath for the count of three. Breathe out for the count of three. At first you may find your thoughts bring in all the chatter and concerns of the day; do not resist this, just allow it through, see each concern as clouds floating across the sky and disappearing. Become aware of your body and relax each part of it from your feet up to your head. Now visualize bringing white light in through the top of your head, and down through your body. See it entering and filling your head, your neck and shoulders and arms, your chest, your stomach, down into your pelvic region, down through your legs and finally out through your feet into the earth beneath your feet. Now expand this white light until you can see yourself in a large bubble of white light. Enjoy this space for a period until you wish to come back into your normal state of awareness by focusing on your surroundings. This exercise helps to get you accustomed to the state of being where your guide can connect and communicate with you, but don’t try to rush this process; a couple of weeks practicing this step will strengthen your energy body and make sure you are ready for that first communication. In the next article I will take you through connection with your guide and will be looking at the forms of communication available to us.

Michael Looking Coyote explores the Mayan fascination with dreams

D

ream interpretation is very popular. The Maya, like all great civilisations, placed enormous emphasis on the correct interpretation of dreams and visions as they were seen as an accurate means of divining the future as well as guiding one through the present. Even today, the Lacandon Maya will often greet visitors not with “Hello”, but with the traditional, “How are your dreams?” or “Are you dreaming well?” In some traditions dream interpretation is forbidden. “Only the dreamer can interpret his or her dream”, an old shaman once told me. The Maya did not share this view, and had developed a very sophisticated system for working out dream symbolism. Essentially, the Mayans believed that dream symbols could be interpreted in one of two ways; the “true way” and the “reverse way”. Suppose you dreamt that you married someone who was incredibly

rich. The “reverse” interpretation would be that you would actually marry someone who was poverty-stricken. So the “true” interpretation would be that you really would marry someone wealthy, right? Wrong! In the Mayan tradition of dream interpretation, “true” interpretations were often set in another context. So, dreaming that you were going to marry someone rich may be literally true, but more likely meant that your neighbour would marry someone rich instead. The dream may also be a metaphor. Dreaming that you married someone rich may simply mean that your dog would find a big, juicy bone! It seems that “reverse” interpretations were more popular with the Maya, and they were certainly easier to understand once a few basic principles were grasped. If an animal appeared in your dream it probably represented a human.

Humans may just as likely represent animals. Large trees represented small bushes, a hot sun represented bitter cold and a goblet of cold water indicated a raging thirst. Some interpretations were common and universally acknowledged amongst the Maya. For instance, dreaming of a chicken always signified a death in the family, a thick cord always represented a snake, a jaguar foretold the coming of a leader or group of people and fruit falling from a tree predicted a birth. In some Mayan traditions dreaming of an animal determined your membership of a certain “Dream Clan”. The Lacandon Maya still do this today. Mayan priests and shamen would often couple dream interpretation with other forms of divination. After hearing a dream, the interpreter would cast ears of corn onto a plate. Their position would help the interpreter refine his or her prediction and provide more detail to the one seeking counsel. Mayan dream interpretations are fascinating, but it probably wouldn’t be a good idea to apply them to yourself. The ancient Maya lived in a different age, and their descendants inhabit a world markedly unlike our own. Dream interpretations need to be looked at in the cultural milieu they appear in. Nevertheless, the Maya knew the value of dreams. Had they not listened to them and looked to them for inspiration would their empire have ever existed? We can only guess; or, perhaps, dream.

o you know what I hate about Christmas? I hate those people who say ‘I hate Christmas!’ You know the type… the same people who walk around in the middle of a heat wave with an anorak on, complaining that it’s too hot. The other folk who annoy me are the ones who always tell you to cheer-up, ‘Never mind love,’ they say, ‘it’ll soon be Christmas.’ The fact that it is the middle of August seems to pass them by. I’m always tempted to reply ‘You’re right, it will soon be Christmas, and hopefully you won’t see it.’ I can be such a cheery soul. I LOVE CHRISTMAS! I adore everything about it. No, actually that’s not true… (Hold tight, I can feel another rant coming on) I hate those people who go over-the-top with their Christmas decorations, attempting to out-shine their neighbours, the gaudier the better. A 7ft high, singing, inflatable snowman and so many bulbs they use more electricity than a

42 Vision 10

small African republic, and they leave them up until mid-March. OK, I’m calm again, where was I… Oh yes, I love Christmas. I still get excited about it, even though I’m now in my 40s; it still hasn’t lost the magic of when I was a child. Will it snow? Will my father be electrocuted by the fairy lights again? Will the dog be sick over the presents like last year? Will the gifts tags get mixed up like they did two years ago? I was thrilled to receive a 4x4 remote controlled car, only to notice the puzzled look on my young son’s face as he opened a set of frightful paisley Y-fronts meant for me. Will my wife appreciate the new flat cap and matching donkey jacket that I bought for her? (She’d better; they cost me a fortune at the car boot) Oh yes, I love Christmas. Like most Christian festivals, Christmas has its roots in a far older pagan tradition. I think it was called Thistle-twong or Holly-pippin or something. Like most ancient customs it was centred on the seasons, and the worship of nature. Down here in Cornwall, these rituals are still carried out. Many of Cornwall’s Holy wells are decorated at Christmas; the groves surrounding these sacred springs are festooned with gifts. Coloured ribbon, cloth and even floral wreaths are hung from the branches. I’d like to think this is where the tradition of decorating a tree started, and let’s face it, they are nicer to look at than the plastic monstrosities that we have indoors today, often resembling a bunch of old pipe cleaners stapled to a broom handle. I think it’s also important to remember that Christmas isn’t just a time to go out and get drunk. Oh no, that can be done any weekend. Those of us who don’t follow any particular religion can still feel a shared spiritual experience. This was reflected last

year by the collective display of compassion shown to those people tragically caught in the Asian Tsunami. The fact that it happened over a time when lots of families were gathered together, reminded us of the really important things in life. It’s not about what we’ve got, what new things we’ve acquired to fill our lives; the real joy comes from having each other and from sharing those moments that can’t be bought and wrapped up. Despite all the commercialism, and emphasis on spending, Christmas day still feels different to any other time. People in the street, who generally pass you by without a glance, smile and wish you ‘A Merry Christmas.’ By 8:30 in the morning there’s normally 5 or 6 kids tearing up and down the pavement on their new bikes, and by 9:30am Granny is already hammered because she has been at the cooking sherry that was meant for the trifle. Another fun filled hour is spent having a pint down the pub and seeing all the men wearing their purple snowmen jumpers, bought for them by their mothers-in-law; the only time of the year when these items will see daylight. By Boxing Day mine will be consigned to the bottom of the wardrobe, along with last year’s orange shocker. Also hidden from view, of course, is my new 18ft inflatable Santa, ready for next years display. Oh yes, I love Christmas, can we have one every year? Intuitive astrologer, psychic and dream interpreter Samantha Hamilton continues Vision’s monthly alphabet round-up of the most common dream scenarios.

Common dreams beginning with the letter Kaleidoscope When a kaleidoscope appears it signifies a period of rapidly moving and changing situations. It would be advisable not to resist these as they unfold, for the changes are leading you to new and higher opportunities. A kaleidoscope also indicates that there is far more to these situations then you will be able to understand until much later. Just go with the flow and all will be revealed in due course. Kangaroo The kangaroo represents an unexpected journey with unusual twists and turns. If the kangaroo had a joey (young kangaroo) in her pouch, many exciting possibilities are in store for you. This also indicates that you will have boundless energy to achieve all that is possible.

There may be some embarrassment at this time with those around you. Killing If you kill someone in a dream, whether it’s a premeditated crime or an accident, it represents a period when you must control your temper. It shows a period of intense emotional stress where tempers can become frayed. If you had dreamed that you had witnessed a killing this hints that you will enter a period of change, which is out of your control. A dream of seeing others killing, including animals, denotes help from friends and close contacts. If you see yourself in the dream killing animals then this is predicting a time where you will be able to overcome your difficulties by your own means.

Kid (young goat/s) A young goat or goats represents a person you know who has power and influence.

Kiss The type of kiss dictates the meaning of the dream. Happiness and serenity will be the outcome if the kiss was a token of affection. If the kiss felt insincere or empty, it warns you of a friend who is possibly false. It may also signify disappointment in a love affair. Success in a difficult task is heralded if you experience a dream of kissing a small child or a baby. Unpleasant experiences or minor illness would be indicated if you dreamt you were trying to avoid being kissed.

Kidnap You would be advised to check your Contents Insurance if a kidnap appears in a dream. This goes double if you were the perpetrator of the kidnap, as this signifies a theft or a loss of valuables or jewelry. If you were the victim of the kidnap this would suggest that a change of the company you keep is advisable.

Kitchen If your dream includes a kitchen which is untidy, dirty or rundown this would indicate the need for a health check and that you are rundown and out-of-sorts. If, on the other hand, the kitchen in your dream was a modern one and well lit and organised this predicts good prospects and a happy social time.

Kennel A person who has influence but chooses not to cooperate with your plans is represented by a kennel. Don’t worry, as they really do not have the influence you expected. Others you have overlooked will come to your aid.

‘K’ Kitten When a kitten or kittens appear in a dream the meaning will depend on whether you are a man or a woman. If you are a man it indicates disappointments in love. However, for a woman playful kittens signify a pleasant, but not all together important, romantic affair. Knives Or Knife Knives and swords in a dream usually suggest power. This can also mean struggles particularly within relationships. A sharp knife signifies a personal emotional battle that you will need to overcome, whereas an old knife will represent internal family squabbles. Failure in love matters is indicated when a broken knife appears. An open penknife predicts long-running legal situations, a closed penknife hints at financial losses. Hard work would be suggested by a blunt knife. Knight If you see yourself as a knight in armour then there is a need for protection or a need to protect others. Who do you feel you need to protect and why? Knitting Although knitting usually signifies you are content and have a peaceful home situation, dropped stitches suggest strife or quarrels in the home. Ornate or complicated knitting suggests a return of an old friendship or the beginning of a new one. Knob (Door) A door-knob in a dream suggests a stroke of unusual luck, this may be a good time to have a flutter!

Rosalind Collier takes us on a tour of common superstitions and asks – why do we do that?

H

ave you ever touched wood for good luck? Have you avoided walking under a ladder? Maybe you avoid having 13 people around the table? Or been horrified at breaking a mirror? Each of the above are common superstitions. A superstition is considered an irrational belief which appears to have no logical basis in science and fact. One of the key characteristics of a superstition is the belief in the existence of luck, and that it can be predicted by signs, and can be controlled or influenced by

particular actions or words. Other key elements include a belief in fate, which again can be predicted or manipulated, as well as a belief in magic. The origins of superstitions are generally difficult to trace but most appear to have their roots in religious, cultural and even personal sources such as having a lucky pen for an exam. One of the main problems that occur when tracing the origins of a superstition is that the superstition most likely will have gone through at least one change in meaning. Today, superstitions are not taken very seriously by most; and the few remaining common ones would appear to be practiced out of habit rather than belief. This is mainly because of the technological and scientific changes that have

occurred in western society. Most superstitions have a basis in fear or uncertainty and are an attempt to control aspects of our life that are in reality out of our control. It should also be noted that superstitious beliefs and

44 Vision 10

practices appear to increase during times of uncertainty, such as war. Changes that have occurred even in the last 50 years however, have resulted in society becoming more stable and less uncertain: therefore, less superstitious. Another difficulty that occurs when identifying a superstition is that a superstition to one person could be a religion to another. For example Australian Aboriginal or Native American religions were widely perceived as

superstitious nonsense by Christians when they were first encountered. There are superstitions that appear to transcend the restrictions of one particular country or culture, for example the Evil Eye appears in nearly all societies and religions in some shape or form, as does the cat as a symbol for either good or evil. The most common superstitions in today’s society revolve around the number 13, not only is the number itself considered unlucky but Friday the 13th is also considered a highly unlucky day as is having 13 people at the table. The wide spread belief in the idea that 13 is unlucky has resulted in hotels, office buildings, cruise ships and apartment buildings not having a 13th floor opting instead for 12a or 14. People’s fear of the number 13 has, in some cases, grown into an actual phobia called triskaidekapaphobia. The origins of the superstitions surrounding the number 13 are difficult to determine. In ancient cultures the number 13 was considered lucky: for example the Egyptians believed the

Most superstitions have a basis in fear or uncertainty and are an attempt to control aspects of our life that are in reality out of our control

number represented the last stage of life before going to heaven. They viewed life’s journey as a ladder with 12 steps, each step representing another on the path to knowledge. The 13th step led to eternal life. The origins of unlucky 13 has also been connected to Judas and the Last Supper and to Norse mythology in which 12 gods attended a banquet that was gate-crashed by Loki the god of mischief, during which the beautiful god Baldur was killed. The earliest reference to number 13 being generally unlucky is in 1852; from then on the popularity in the superstition surrounding the number 13 has grown. However, there is no one explanation for the number 13 being unlucky. Touching wood is one of the few superstitions that has surpassed its original superstitious origins and grown into an everyday saying. Most people utter the words and do the action without even thinking or realising its superstitious origins. Touching wood is meant to bring good luck or ward off bad luck and also acts as a counter to the Jinxing effect of tempting fate. There are

several suggested explanations for its origins the first being an 18th Century game called Tiggy Touch Wood, where the pursued are only safe when touching wood. A more plausible explanation is that the superstition comes from pagan times. The druids believed that spirits inhabited the trees and that through touching or hugging the trees they could find peace or prosperity. Avoiding ladders is another wide-spread superstition around today. Most people still practice it even though they might not admit to it. There are many possibilities for the origins of this superstition some relating to Christianity. One of these explanations is that a ladder, the floor and the wall form a triangle and to Christians this represents the holy trinity and to walk through it would be blasphemous. Another suggested origin relates to executions and the ladder set at an angle is similar to many make-shift gallows in which the condemned must climb to their deaths. Mirrors feature prominently in superstitions; they act as bringers of good or bad luck or as tools for divination. The most common superstition in circulation today is that breaking a mirror will bring seven years bad luck. Though it is uncertain where the origin of this particular superstition comes from, early cultures and religions believed that one’s reflection was more than just an image but also the soul looking back. It was believed that if the reflected soul was harmed then misfortunes would ensue. Thus the breaking of a mirror or reflection would cause harm. Even today it is believed in some countries that a crocodile can kill a man by snapping at his reflection in water.

Diana Jarvis explains the basics of divining with rods for water, artefacts, lost keys and ghosts! “Call me old-fashioned, but I rely on my rods” said Dougie Scriven, retiring from his post with Yorkshire Water in 2001. Unlikely as it may seem, dowsing is encouraged by some utility companies, as the technique often comes up with the goods when every other scientific method fails. How it is possible for the rods to move of their own accord? The forces behind dowsing have been attributed to electromagnetism, body language and radiation, but ultimately no-one actually knows how they work. Divining is a simple and natural art; but like everything that’s worth learning, it takes application and practice to make perfect. The technique is easy, though, so you can get going straight away and practice until you’re an expert! 1: Position yourself with your feet at shoulder-width and your knees off-lock. Stand straight, holding the Divining Rods out in front of you, keeping them parallel to each other and the ground. Tuck in your elbows to your sides and take a few deep breaths. 2. When you are comfortable in your position, say out loud (or in your head) “Show me the position for YES”. Your Divining Rods will either cross or move apart – whatever they do is the right answer for you. Then ask the rods “What is the position for NO”. It is likely that they will do the opposite of what they have done for “YES”. Note the responses so that you know what is being said to you when you divine.

the direction the single rod pointed to. When you reach the position of your missing object, your rods will cross. This method can be used with a map.

Finding Missing Items: Hold one rod out at arm’s length and say “Where is the (Name of the missing object)?”. While concentrating on the question rotate yourself extremely slowly and the Divining Rods will stay pointing in one direction even though you keep rotating. Pick up the other rod and follow

Locating Paranormal “Hot-Spots” Many ghost investigation groups (including the Visionaries) use Divining Rods to find areas of potential paranormal activity. Use rods to find areas where activity will be at a haunted location TONIGHT (witnesses can only tell you where it was when they saw it).

Locating Ley Lines, underground water or metal: Use the process above, but ask a specific question like, “where is the nearest Ley Line” or “where is there an underground stream” or “where is there a source of metal”. Once you have established where the energy/water or metal is, your Divining Rods will open up in a straight line that follows the line of the energy. Tapping into Intuition: You can use your Divining rods to ask specific questions that your conscious mind does not know but your Higher Self does. Simply concentrate (or mediate before hand) and using your YES and NO indicators, ask the rods. You will find that you build up a relationship with your rods surprisingly quickly and should receive accurate answers.

The method for finding water can be employed, but concentrate on paranormal activity instead – and get the best pictures and readings! No rods? Want some? Vision are absolutely delighted to announce that we have sourced some of the best quality rods you’ll find; especially for Vision readers! These rods are hand-crafted from brass and are perfectly balanced for smooth movement. More importantly, the arm of the rod moves independently from the upright, so you don’t have to worry that you are accidentally moving them yourself. They come with basic instructions, so you will have everything you need to get going straight away. Introductory offer for this issue only: Purchase these rods at the special offer price of £22.99 including P & P (will normally be sold for £24.99 including P & P). John Addey investigates the dramatic changes to the health of horses with the use of little patches!

F

ollowing the interest created in issue 9, Vision are continuing their study of the effects Lifewave patches have on the aura. I’m delighted to be able to write about their success with animals too! There have been several years of pseudo-testing on athletes but, more recently, the patches have been tested on animals especially horses and dogs - with amazing results! Spiritual healing is already well-known as a non-invasive and gentle technique to improve animals’ health, but Lifewave patches never looked very spiritual to me. I am always wary of a treatment that appears to be just another chemical, but Lifewave patches don’t transfer anything from the patch to the animal at all – nor does the animal feel any pain or discomfort. I want to start by telling you about a horse called Bandit. He is a 30year-old three-quarters thoroughbred who has been owned by Emma Clapton

Acupuncture points for horses.

48 Vision 10

for the last 15 years. Four years ago a growth appeared on his thyroid gland, which caused him severe discomfort and his energy levels dropped, so much so that he would not even trot after the other horses in the field. He became a plodder! Emma was introduced to Lifewave patches by her friend, Nigel. Nigel explained that Lifewave was

Bandit sporting the patches.

having incredible results on horses in the United States and suggested she should try it on Bandit. So she agreed to give it a go. The first question was “Where do I put the patches?” Nigel gave her an acupuncture point diagram of a horse and said to initially try Bladder 23 and Lung 6 (see diagram) which should help reduce Bandit’s pain and give him more energy. Within 3 days Bandit was galloping around the field with the other 6 and 7 year old horses in pursuit, acting more like a two-year old! He has been wearing the patches for 3 days a week over the last 4 months and in that time the growth has totally disappeared and he is back to his old self and up to his old tricks: for the first time in years.

White horse showing popular patch placement.

Emma’s contact in the United States was Dr. Lauren Derock who has treated over 150 horses for soreness,

He has been wearing the “patches for 3 days a week over the last 4 months and in that time the growth has totally disappeared.

muscle development and other ailments over the last couple of years with Lifewave patches. Here are some interesting results from Dr. Derock; bear in mind that although some horses’ conditions improve immediately, a full month’s course is recommended:

with Lifewave patches the previously painful points were undetectable. 4 year old gelding with girth pain. This symptom usually accompanies Sacro-Sciatic Syndrome and in most cases precedes it. Patches were applied at the base of the neck. This cleared the pain in about 5 minutes. 15 year old Paso Fino gelding with lower back pain, stiffness in circling. This horse was in severe pain when circling to the right. The patches were

applied to the Sacro-Sciatic point in the area of the Gluteal muscle lateral to the dock. Within 5 minutes the horse didn’t seem to be in any pain and circled easily in both directions. Dr Derock has been “Completely blown away by the results which are truly remarkable, repeatable and consistent”. The effects on the aura (see last issue) and the results on both humans and animals seem to confirm that working through the aura (our bioelectric field) really does aid healing and health. We’ve known this all the time, haven’t we readers? Now, however, science may be able to come round to this, with something as tangible as the Lifewave patch. After such fantastic reports on horses, Vision’s pets are preparing themselves for an outbreak of patches in the not-too-distant future. All we need to do is figure out how to get them to stick on Bearded Collies …

The patches are available through a network of distributors who can be contacted via the web www.lifewave.com/soarer

20 year old suffering from severe back pain. Patches were applied at Bladder 23. Within one minute of application, horse licked and chewed and was quite relaxed. All the acupoints that had been extremely reactive were now quiet. The next morning he was running around the pasture playing with his mate. 12 year old gelding with pain in the kidney & liver points on the back. Within 5 minutes of being patched up

T

he Crystal Bible has become one of the handbooks for those interested in crystals and their uses and its author, Judy Hall, has been studying and using crystals in her work for years. I asked her how she works with stones: because for Judy it may very well be stones as much as crystals! “I have always used stones (and I mean that quite literally, I’d pick up a pebble as a child and use it, and often still do) completely intuitively. The more I investigated crystals, the more I began to understand how ancient the connections between stones and planets and signs were (I’ve tracked it back to Mesopotamia so far) and I realised that I was tuning into something universal and vibrational that was truly holistic – literally as above, so below. My work with stones is more effective when I simply tune into “what does this person/chart need?” than when I deliberately choose a crystal because of its properties.” There are many misconceptions about crystals and also about how to choose them, so I asked Judy how she would recommend that Vision readers choose a stone that is appropriate for them. “The crystal that speaks to you is the one for you. Don’t be fooled by bright, shiny and big. These are not necessarily the most effective. Although beautiful crystals can work wonders, small, misshapen and less attractive crystals have the same power and cost a great deal less. When you visit a crystal shop, notice which crystal catches your eye first. It will

Garry Phillipson talks to Judy about her many talents and experiences. be the one for you. If you are looking for a specific tumbled stone, plunge your hand into a tub and the one that sticks to your hand has your name on it. Take it home, run it under the tap to cleanse its energies, and then hold it in both hands and program it to respond by dedicating it to your specific purpose. It will serve you well.” So, having chosen a crystal by intuition, where does this leave birthstones, that are allocated by the month or star sign under which you were born? Judy has written a book called The Crystal Zodiac, so it would seem that she is the perfect person to answer the question – why bother with birthstones if intuition will choose you the right crystal? “Birthstones work well because there are thousands of years of traditional use supporting them and they have a

The crystal that speaks to you is “ the one for you. Don’t be fooled by bright, shiny and big. These are not necessarily the most effective

beneficial overall effect on a sun sign, so they are excellent for prolonged general wear. But crystals are very individual. This is particularly so if you are looking for optimum wellbeing, and in Crystal Prescriptions, for instance, I give a wide range of options along with instructions on how to choose the right crystal. It is wise to remember that a crystal you needed for a specific purpose will have to be put aside once it has done its work. Crystals have to suit your own unique

vibration and your state of energetic balance or imbalance, which continually shifts. To this you need to add the subtle differences to a birthstone that your date and time of birth make – which is why The Crystal Zodiac includes supporting sun-sign stones as well as moon and ascendant crystals. Finding exactly the right crystal in a shop is easy, because it will leap out at you, but if you are selecting from stones you already have at home, then finger dowsing quickly pinpoints exactly the right one. To finger dowse you simply put the thumb and forefinger of one hand together to make a loop, then you link the thumb and forefinger of the other hand through the loop. When you ask the question “is this the right crystal for me now” and pull firmly, if it holds the answer is yes, if your thumb and finger part, the answer is no. As well as working and writing about crystals, Judy is also a long-time astrologer. Sun signs only offer a part of who you are astrologically: a full chart and interpretation give a clearer picture. I asked Judy what an astrologer could do

in order to maximize the chances of a chart reading being good quality. Judy’s style of astrology is not just the ‘science’ of it, but includes a good dose of her own intuition. So, it’s not surprising that connecting with the client is important to her, nor is it surprising that she uses crystals in combination with charts! “Once I started working with (astrological) charts, I’d put appropriate crystals on the chart to facilitate sending healing vibrations to that person or to support them in bringing about a change or making a move, or just to help them to be themselves. It is my opinion that a

client keeping an open mind and not trying (consciously or unconsciously) to force the reading to go a particular way is beneficial – particularly for people like me who do work intuitively as it is so easy to pick up what the client wants to hear. I also think that both parties having a clear mind, a good spiritual connection, and a focussed intent will

more I investigated crystals, the “The more I began to understand how ancient the connections between stones and planets and signs were” also assist the reading. In certain astrological disciplines, a thorough grounding in the technique is important but in my approach probably less so.” As we’ve been looking at the Mayans and their astrology, I wondered what Judy thought about the fact that their calendar ends in 2012? Did they just run out of room? “I think the Mayans were wise people and I doubt they’d simply have run out of room. To me, it looks like they were describing one cycle – albeit a very long one. But a cycle is simply that, and when it ends a new one begins, although perhaps not without a shakeout to begin with. When I look at all the heavyweight

planets shifting from one zodiac sign to another just before or during 2012, my hope is that we will evolve, that a greater awareness will be able to manifest here on the earth, and we will go through a spiritual and ecological doorway. I don’t think it will bring Armageddon, nor do I think certain people will float off the planet and others be doomed to extinction. Neither do I feel that we should be complacent. I was taught that it was by each individual shifting their consciousness, taking responsibility for where they were, and making the necessary steps that the whole could evolve and I’d like to think that 2012 will see a speeding up of that process.”

Nance Turner looks at Indigo Children and their spiritual potential

I

n recent years there has been an influx of information about Indigo children. These children, so named because of their indigo auras, are alleged to be a new breed of spiritual beings that now inhabit our world, and have been born to share and spread the word of love. What makes these children so interesting? Do you think that your child could be an indigo child? Would you be surprised to know that you might be one yourself? The name Indigo Child was given to a special group of people who chose (in the life between lives), to live a life of teaching and/or healing. This strong indigo colour in their aura represents the Third Eye Chakra, which is connected with intuitive and psychic abilities. It has been suggested that Indigos have been arriving on this planet for years. The greatest waves of indigos were allegedly born in the 197os, which would now make a lot of indigos in their late twenties and early thirties now.

How To Spot An Indigo Indigos are quite easy to spot, they are the ones who are rebellious to authority, nonconformist, highlytalented or academically gifted. They can also be extremely emotional and physically sensitive, and there is a widespread belief that some indigos suffer with ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) or can be labelled Autistic. However, they can be energetic and active, have strong wills and know they are different and have a purpose in life that they must fulfil. They also use their right brain more and have a love of all things like writing, art and anything to do with spirituality.

52 Vision 10

They can be extremely passionate and loyal, and above all else believe in absolute honesty and good communication in any given relationship.

Is Your Child An Indigo? The young indigo children are often in their own little world. They have imaginary friends and love anything to do with dolphins and fairies. The boys are often labelled as disruptive and can be quite hyperactive. They hate to be told what to do, and will be stubborn enough to debate and try to negotiate everything you tell them. The best way to handle this kind of behaviour in your young indigo is to be willing to negotiate back and offer them choices. They hate school and get bored really easy, anything that is repetitive they will not respond to. They have to be creative or else will lose interest, and battle constantly with authority.

The Teen Indigo As your teen indigo reaches puberty, they can become quite withdrawn and into themselves. As they grow up, they can disconnect themselves from being materialistic and sometimes go

for an alternative life path that is deemed more challenging or just plain fun. They can tend to be overachievers, this can damage the indigo’s soul, as they are so naturally gifted and don’t need to prove anything. It’s at this stage that the young indigo starts to develop amazing abilities in technical and academic studies. This can lead to success, but can also cause them to be emotionally distant, which could damage future relationships.

The Indigo Adult As Indigos grow into adults, they usually fall into two groups. The first group are the ones who create a career in the arts or anything to do with computers, and are often quite successful. They also go on to have children and stable family

How To Help An Indigo Indigos need to express who they are, they need to be respected and honoured, if given a chance will become loving and gifted. Indigos are born with a mission to accomplish, they are the Spiritual Warriors of this world, and know in their hearts that they were put here to help. Don’t ever tell your Indigo child they are not good enough, they will think they are failures. This could be said of any child or adult, but indigos moreso, because they are here to teach us how to love and respect each other. If you respect them they will respect you, no matter how different you think they are to you. Love them, respect them and watch them grow and thrive!

These children, so named “ because of their indigo auras, are alleged to be a new breed of spiritual beings that now inhabit our world, and have been born to share and spread the word of love”

lives. However, as an indigo, they are constantly battling with the systems and normality of life. They find it difficult to express who they are or just to remain true to their purpose. They will still strive to succeed, but with the restraints of our society will find it hard to find the right balance in their life. The second group of indigos are often labelled Dropouts, and will travel the world, but will never quite settle in one place. They never seem to have a career plan and quite often live and stick to their alternative path. They want desperately to be happy, and will often lie that they are, but these are the indigos that get frustrated by their lack of success, and will hanker after finding a normal life and creating a stable family.

Andrea Rivers explores the use of aromatic oils in spells and rituals

M

any people know of the beneficial use of essential oils in aromatherapy and massage but don’t realise that essential oils can also be used to great effect in Ritual and Magick. The use of essential oils in magick goes back thousands of years where fragrant plants were heated up in oils or fat allowing the fragrance to transfer to the oil, which then took on the smell of whichever plant was being used. Our sense of smell is one of the most important and powerful senses that we have. Smell is connected to the unconscious part of the mind, essential oils stimulate the senses and help us to open our awareness on many levels

54 Vision 10

and encourage a link to our higher self. Scent can bring pleasure, alert us to danger, cause revulsion and affect our health. Everything that has a smell causes a chemical reaction in the brain and triggers instincts and memories. Perhaps this is why the use of oils in magick is so popular: they help the practitioner to reach a relaxed state, which is ideal for magickal work. Oils can be used in a variety of ways for magickal work; they can be used to anoint yourself and others in a circle, to consecrate tools and materials, and to anoint candles and ritual objects such as statues of the Goddess and God. They can also be an invaluable aid in

achieving Astral projection and Meditation. Another way to use oils is as an aid to empowering objects for spells. You can focus all your magickal intention into the oil, thus imbuing it with that power and then direct the energy to the task you have in mind. There are infinite uses for oils in magick from the subtle; such as making a room smell fragrant, to the more significant; such as using anointing oil to mark symbols on the body relevant to the ritual being performed (this draws the energy of the oil into oneself). When marking symbols on the body with oil there are a number of types of symbol you can use, a good example is the Pentagram. This is the five-pointed star which, when drawn in a certain way, can be used to invoke or banish. Another commonly-used symbol is the Solar Cross. This is formed by two lines, like a Christian cross, but each line has equal dimensions. The Solar cross represents the Sun God just as the Lunar spiral represents the Moon Goddess. In a witch’s oil cupboard the following blends are must-haves: Altar Oil is used to prepare the altar before use for a particular ritual, Consecration Oil is used to anoint the tools of the craft and Cleansing Oil is used to purify an area or object ridding it of any negative energy that may be present due to handling previous to purchase. Up-to-date recipes for these can be found in any good book on oils in magick, but you can make your own by creating blends of oils that reflect the task they are to do. Bathing can become a ritual by adding several drops of oil to your bath

water: Rose or Jasmine oil in your bath water is a good way of attracting love into your life, the added bonus is the heavenly smell! When you get into the water inhale the fragrance deeply, drawing the energy into your body. Visualise bringing love into your life, focus on this for a few minutes and then let it go. Take this bath two or three times a week until the love you have asked for manifests itself. Talismans and Amulets can be anointed with a few drops of the appropriately blended oil, this is always done with a particular goal in mind. Crystals can have oil rubbed onto them to magnify their energy during spell work and ritual, the anointed crystal can then be worn, carried or placed about your person to help attract the outcome you

A good example is to anoint a “ cleansed Rose Quartz crystal with Ylang-Ylang, this will help attract love to the wearer

desire. A good example is to anoint a cleansed Rose Quartz crystal with YlangYlang, this will help attract love to the wearer. Crystals can also be placed in blended oils to boost and magnify their magickal properties. Here are a couple of magickal blends that I use regularly and find highly effective: Confidence Oil: 3 x drops of Ginger oil 1 x drop of Black Pepper oil 1 x drop of Clove oil Add these to 20ml. of Base oil. Base oils are used to dilute the strength of the essential oils, this is always necessary if you are thinking of putting these blends in contact with the skin. Examples of Base oils are: Almond, Jojoba, Peach Kernel and Grapeseed, all of which are readily available from high street chemists. Use this magickal blend to increase your confidence, especially before a job interview, meeting new people or public speaking.

Protection Oil: 5 x drops of Petitgrain oil 5 x drops of Black pepper oil add to 20ml. of base oil Wear for protection against all kinds of Psychic attack and negativity. You can also anoint windows, doors and other parts of your house to protect against negative energies. Psychic Oil: 5x drops of Lemon grass oil 1 x drop of Yarrow oil add to 20ml. of base oil Wear to increase psychic powers especially when working with divination tools e.g. Tarot cards, Crystals and Rune stones. Please note: It is important to remember never to use magickal oils or essential oils on children, pregnant women, animals or people who may have allergies and skin conditions. It is always best to check the contraindications of the oils being used e.g. Fennel should never be used on epileptics as this may induce a fit. If you are unsure, consult a doctor.

Val williams introduces us to the age-old art of Candle Magick.

L

ighting a candle has always been a symbolic act: spreading light into the everyday darkness of our lives. Many children in less safety-conscious days fell asleep to the flickering flame of a night lite, protected from the shadows by the glowing flame. The blowing out of a birthday candle is a simple spell that we have all performed without knowing the significance. Many religions each year weave elaborate rituals around candles, and candle-lit processions. People will light a candle for a loved one at church, or at a Pagan ceremony. The candle’s light represents the divine light and soul of the person. Fire has always been looked upon as magical. Candles are a way of bringing that magic into the home. In recent years the sale of candles have grown as they are used more and more around the home to set the scene for the romantic dinner, a relaxing bath or a night of seduction. There are a large range of colours and types available to purchase nowadays, these are far removed from the original animal fat (tallow) candles of the 16th century. Candles have always been associated with Magic. History records the use of candles to cast spells. There are many types of candle available that you can use for spellwork, from the normal tapered dinner candle to highly decorated and shaped figure candles that are more readily available from specialist suppliers. If you cannot find a candle that is suitable for your purpose in one of the many shops that now retail them, you may decide to make one yourself. This is recommended if you wish to use one for a magical rite because, by making it yourself, you are putting part of your energy into the candle. You will need to purchase wax,

56 Vision 10

The blowing out of a birthday candle is a “simple spell that we have all performed without knowing the significance ” colouring, and the correct wick. Utensils for the construction can be borrowed from the kitchen – such as saucepans. You will also need a mould of some type, these can be purchased from specialist shops or you can use a food container that is finished with, such as a yoghurt pot. When you have gathered together your items you need to melt the wax slowly. Do not use direct heat; use a saucepan within a saucepan of water. This is known as a double boiler. If the candle is for magic you can chant over the wax while it is melting. Keep it simple. A one-word chant is effective. If the candle is for healing chant the word “Heal” over the melting wax keeping your thoughts focused on the purpose. At this point you can add the appropriate colour. You can also add a few drops of oil (such as lavender, rose or patchouli) if you wish. These should correspond with the colour and purpose of the candle you are making. Some people will also add small crystals and herbs to make the candle more potent. Once the wax is melted and the colour is added allow it to cool slightly. Never pour boiling wax into a mould. Now prepare the mould by fitting the wick. Commercial moulds already come with a hole to thread the wick. If yours does not then you will need to make one with a sharp object, be careful, as your blood will not add anything to your magic. Thread the wick and seal it tape. Now you can fill your mould with the wax. Care should be taken, as hot wax can cause severe burns, pour the wax steadily and slowly. Once done you can place the candle

somewhere safe to cool. Should you wish to make candles I would recommend you invest in one of the many books available on the subject. Candle making kits can also be purchased which contain everything you need to get started. If you do not have time to make one, and you buy a commercially manufactured candle you will need to prepare it for your magical working. This is known as dressing or blessing the candle. It is simple the process of rubbing your chosen oil along the length of the candle. The purpose of dressing the candle is imbue it with your desire. You will need oil for this purpose, you can buy one or make a blend yourself. The oil for dressing should complement the purpose of the rite. The candle should be dressed from tip to base. If it is to banish (to remove) then it should be dressed from base to tip. While you are doing this you should focus on the purpose and chant. Once prepared the candle can then be used. Burn it in a safe place away from pets and curtains where you can leave it without fear of it tipping over or catching anything alight. Always remember that when a candle is lit it is elemental in its nature and its flame is alive. Controlled in a safe environment it is magical, uncontrolled it is dangerous. Once you have lit the candle it should be allowed to burn away completely and any wax left over disposed of. Do not be tempted to re-use in any form. The colour of the candle is important as each one will burn at a different vibration. This will affect the magical purpose.

There are also Cabalistic and Goddess /God colours which can be used to make your magic more effective. Candle magic and the creation of your candle can be as simple or as complicated as you wish it to be. The simplest candle magic spell is to choose an appropriate candle, the appropriate phase of the moon and to write a short rhyme detailing what you want. As with every form of Magic, be careful what you wish for! Find out which God or Goddess is patron of the type of item you want (ie, you might chose Aphrodite for Love or Jupiter for business success) and ask them to bless your request. You may not wish to involve any specific deity, but rather ask “the Powers” in general. Either will suffice. Don’t forget that the most potent power in magic is your desire for the item you are asking for – imagine having it here and now with all your emotions. When you are done, forget it all. Leave it be and be assured that the relevant power/s will help you “an it harm none”.

A

s the days grow shorter and the nights become longer, this is the time of year we feel less like venturing out into the cold nights and more like snuggling up in front of the fire with a cup of hot chocolate, a little like animals hibernating for the winter. This is a good time of year to finish incomplete tasks, take the opportunity to pamper yourself or read that book you have been meaning to get round to. It is also nice to wrap up warm and go out for a walk, which not only helps clear the head but lets you appreciate the changes Mother Nature brings. The air is crisp and fresh and the frost will be on the ground as the earth rests in its preparation for the coming spring. The greeks explained Winter with the myth of Hades and Persephone. Zeus, king of the gods, promised his brother Hades that he could have Persephone as a wife. Zeus neglected to mention this to either Persephone or her mother Demeter. Demeter was the Earth Goddess and ensured that plants and animals thrived. When Persephone was not presented to Hades he decided to take matters into his own hands and promptly abducted her! Demeter was so distraught at the loss of her daughter that she withdrew her powers from the Earth. When she finally got Persephone back it was only for part of the year - so every year Demeter withdraws and we have Winter.

Clove gives off a high spiritual vibration, which purifies the area. Cloves can be placed in an amulet or charm to drive off negativity, when strung on a red cord a clove becomes a protective charm. Cloves can also be burned to stop people gossiping about you. If you wish to attract love or money, then carry clove about your person. It is also an excellent analgesic and mild antiseptic which makes it a good natural treatment for toothache – in it’s essential oil form it can be dabbed onto cotton wool and placed directly on the source of the pain. (If in doubt about allergic reactions or contraindications, consult your doctor.)

Goddess of the Month Hathor Hathor is an Egyptian goddess known in Egypt as HwtHr, which means “House of Horus”. Hathor was the daughter of Nut and Ra; she was also the wife of Horus. Hathor was originally worshipped in the form of a cow and later represented with the head of a cow or shown as a beautiful woman with a headdress resembling a pair of cow horns with the moon disc between them. She was also depicted wearing a Menat necklace, which is the symbol of rebirth. Hathor was the goddess of joy, motherhood and love, patron of all women, protectress of pregnant women and midwives. She was also the goddess of music and dancing, a fertility goddess and goddess of moisture. Hathor was also known as the eye of Ra. The Sycamore tree is sacred to Hathor. Hathor is best invoked to protect women, children and all matters dealing with childbirth.

Yule/Winter Solstice: 21st December 2005. Yule means wheel, it is the shortest day of the year and it is a time of rebirth and renewal. This is the time when we celebrate the rebirth of The God as he returns to bring the warmth of the sun and fertility back to the land. Tradition has it that the Yule log (made out of Oak) or a bonfire was lit to encourage him out of the womb of his mother. It is normal to leave all the lights burning overnight on the altar (please be careful if you decide to do this, in case of fire) to show him the way. Here is a simple Yule ritual to help you to connect with the spiritual energies available at this time of year.

Yule Ritual: 1 x Cup of Wine 1 x Red Candle 1 x Green Candle Decide what you would like to decorate your altar with: some excellent choices would be evergreens, green and red ribbons or ivy. Don’t forget, your altar can be a simple table or shelf in a spare room; it doesn’t have to be of the finest marble and set in a grove of oak trees! When you have gathered everything together, light the red and green candles that you have placed on the altar. Now cast your circle. Stand facing the north, holding out your arm and point your finger imagining a golden light shooting out of your finger as you turn full circle clockwise. Then say “the circle is cast”. Sit down in the centre of your circle and think about the things you want to leave behind in life and then visualise any new things you would like to come into your life: because this is a time for making wishes. After you have done this, raise the cup of wine to The God and place it back on the altar - at the same time giving thanks to The God for helping you with your wishes. How you visualise The God is up to you. He may simply be a strong and fit man, you may choose to see him with antlers and goat’s feet or you may just see him as energy. When you’ve given thanks, say “an it harm none, so mote it be”. Now close your circle by once again standing facing the north, raising your arm and turning anti–clockwise whilst imagining the golden energy being drawn back into your finger. After this is done take your cup of wine outside and make a libation: pour it on Mother Earth.

Jenny Smedley investigates the emotive subject of the Mayan calendar and the potential for us all in 2012

If you mention the Mayan Calendar to most people they will immediately think of 2012 and the possibilities that might bring; however, there’s a lot more of interest to it. Unlike our modern calendar, which has 365 days most years, the Mayan daily calendar had only 260. Their ‘week’ consisted of thirteen days, but confusingly, they named twenty in all. This meant that when number fourteen was reached, it became the first day of the next ‘week’. In this way the weeks started with a rotational day, as opposed to always being ‘Monday’. Their day names were, Imix, Ik, Ak’bal, K’an, Chikchan, Kimi, Manik, Lamat, Muluk, Ok, Chuwen, Eb, Ben, Ix, Men, Kib, Kaban, Etz’nab, Kawak, Ahaw. Unlike our modern day names which are all derivations of old Gods – eg. Thursday – Thor’s Day, the Mayan days were mostly called after animals, minerals and planets. Chikchan was the Snake, Kaban was the Earth, Lamat was Venus. As well as their regular calendar, the Mayans also had a solar year, which had the conventional 365 days. They named eighteen months, Phop, Wo, Sip, Sotz’, Sek, Xul, Yaxk’in, Mol, Ch’en, Yax, Zak, Keh, Mak, K’ank’in, Muwan, Pax, K’ayab, Kumk’u. To make it more complicated, because they didn’t know about fractions, the Mayans had to add a special 5 day month, called Wayeb, to balance the year out. With regard to the legendary date in their projected calendar, December 21, 2012, there are a great many misconceptions. On that day the Sun will conjunct the intersection of the Milky Way – our galaxy. The cosmic cross, which will be formed by the intersecting Milky Way and plane of the ecliptic, was called the Sacred Tree by the Mayans. The trunk of the tree (the Axis Mundi) is the Milky Way and the main branch, which forms the cross, is the plane of the ecliptic. At dawn on December 21, 2012, the Sun will rise to conjoin the centre of the Sacred Tree. This is indeed a rare

astronomical event. It has not happened for 25,800 years, and so its occurrence, within most of our lifetimes, is bound to stir up mystical musings, and give birth to many theories as to what it might mean. Because of the fact that the Earth wobbles slightly on its journey, the Winter Solstice has been gradually moving towards our Galactic Centre. The Mayans were able to follow this

60 Vision 10

progression by long periods of observation, and because of their ability to project astrological events far into the future. They were able to pinpoint the day of December 21, 2012 as the end of their Great Cycle. They then counted

backwards from it to decide when their calendar should begin. So this date does not actually signify the end of their calendar, or indeed the end of anything. What it would have done, had they survived, was to have given them a new start date for a new cycle. Maybe it will also be a new cycle for us, hopefully one of peace and love.

Astological Overview for January Paula Garton takes us through the planets and their influences for January

W

e will be recovering from the Christmas conjunction of Mercury and Pluto which will reveal some secret information that has been hidden until the end of December. January will show why people were behaving in a mysterious manner, keeping quiet until we needed to know why. Now we can deal with what we know and be less stressed. Venus the planet of love, relationships, valuables, beauty and social interaction turned around and now looks as if it is going backwards in the sky. This is not what is actually happening, but due to the different speeds that the planets travel compared to the Earth. As Venus appears to go backwards it is referred to as being retrograde and turns the expression of the energy and character inwards.

62 Vision 10

As it turned retrograde on the 24th December when it is motionless in the sky before it turns backwards, it then takes time for it to move at any recognisable speed. By January it is truly going backwards so the full impact of the energy is felt. At this time people will not feel like socialising, more like staying in and watching TV or a film. As everyone is feeling the same it is not a time for making new friends or repairing old friendships as you feel self-indulgent, requiring attention and love, which is not easily obtained. Romance will also be difficult as you will feel unloved, and not wanting to give out love readily, it can also make you lazy and unproductive. Finance are now difficult as productivity is low and the desire to indulge more likely. There will also be a desire for sweet foods or to go on a strict diet, which is not good for feeding the mind. If you are artistic you will change the way you express yourself. If you prefer conventional art you will turn to abstract art and vice versa. Universally Diplomatic relations will be strained as there will be less motivation to agree with one another making treaties and negotiations difficult to obtain. Faults and flaws will also be exaggerated so people will be more critical of each other, making friendliness and love go out the window. Not until the 3rd of

February will Venus turn back and be loving again. Mars is picking up speed in Taurus after its regressed phase in October and November and slowness of December. This now allows the repressed energy to be released and sustained at a comfortable level. Gone is the frustration of the last two months as our energies are moving allowing our ideas to be put into action completing projects on time. Taureans will at last get off the sofa and finish their DIY jobs. Tempers will subside and willpower will increase. Nebulous Neptune is sending negative beams to Jupiter clouding our judgement and expectations so any gamble or risk is doomed to fail. Not good for stock market flutters as rumours and scandal cause fluctuations in share prices, especially in transport, oil, gas, or water companies. Wait till February when the cloud dissipates. Seems a busy month for us all so need to keep your heads clear ready for action.

Let Vision’s no-nonsense astrologer James Christie guide you through the Year ahead... 22 Dec - 20 Jan

The Year Ahead 2006

T

his is a useful year for getting rid of a lot of the dead wood that has built up in your life over the last few years. It is also a great year for building up the quality and content of your social life and for making important and influential new friends. A lot of time will be spent in looking ahead into your long term future and putting a number of key plans in place and, as you go through this process, you should enjoy a mounting buzz of excitement. Life is changing for the better and you’re in control of the changes, so no wonder you’re feeling confident and on the ball! However, there are some real challenges in 2006, both in your business affairs and in affairs of the heart. In both departments you are going to have to learn to be a little more flexible and adaptable to changing circumstances, and if you meet with opposition it does not mean that your opponents are against you, only that they have different priorities and different ways of doing

things. Basically targets and values are the same – which is encouraging. There are some periods in the year when your workload is going to be particularly heavy and I draw your attention to the first week of February, the first week of May and the last week of September. Here you will be working some very long and exhausting hours and although the financial rewards are likely to be high, you do need to monitor your physical health levels and also the amount of stress you’ll be putting yourself under at these times. August seems like a good month for getting some R&R and there are some interesting travel aspects around this time of the year. Having said that, there are much more interesting travel connotations associated with November and December, which is a period in which you’ll be looking at property and reviewing some of your options. The idea of buying property overseas cannot be entirely dismissed and any links you may have with people and places overseas and

across water are destined to get a lot stronger rather than any weaker. 2006 is a year in which idealistic romantic dreams have to be compromised with the practical reality of dealing with day-to-day relationships, and therefore if there are spontaneous opportunities to lighten the load and get out there for a bit more plain oldfashioned fun, grab these opportunities with both hands! April augers well for new romances, August looks dangerous for holiday romances and December looks decidedly awkward for all affairs of the heart unless partners can get their heads together and start pulling towards common goals. A recurring theme throughout the year for many members of the sign will be some ongoing concern for the welfare and wellbeing of older people in the family. I don’t get a feeling of crisis here but March and December are both periods in which you need to be waiting in the wings standing by to pick someone up if they should happen to fall.

21 Jan – 19 Feb

The Year Ahead 2006

I

think there are two key challenges for Aquarians in 2006 and they are both related insofar as you need to elevate career pathways out of the rather predictable rut they have fallen into and you must also work hard to make sure that long established relationships do not fall into a similar kind of rut on the domestic front. Basically, Aquarians need to spur themselves into action before fate and destiny take a hand and do it for them. The “oh what’s the point?” attitude found in younger people is a real ambition-killer and the “oh, I know I’ve got to do it but I’ll do it tomorrow or next week” attitude found in older members of the sign breeds mental and spiritual lethargy. There is, I’ll grant you, the chicken and the egg situation here. You’ll be looking for some external stimulation but that “stimulation” will be waiting for you to light the blue touch paper. Would you like to borrow my lighter?

64

Now, on to other things: let us look at the loveliest time of your year for sex, romance and affairs of the heart –the glorious month of August. Perhaps for the first time in the whole of the year, everything comes together and really starts working for you then, whatever you’re looking regarding romance. There will have been some emotional friction in April and May, and some uneasy truces in June and July, but August is your break-out month where families and friends unite in some sort of “grail quest” to make you happier. Also interesting to note that business partnerships enter a very lucrative phase in the August and September of the year and any kind of joint venture launched in the autumn is well starred. January is probably the lowest month of the year so if I were you I’d just say “forget it” and stay in bed until February. At least in February there is a bit more cash trickling in and there

should be one or two doors opening that have been shut for a few months too long. Around Valentines Day (February 14th if you needed reminding) a whole load of manure could hit the fan if (a) you don’t send your nearest and dearest a Valentines card or (b) (ten times worse) your nearest and dearest realizes that you’ve sent a Valentine card to someone else. Careful Water-Bearers, careful! It wasn’t curiosity that killed the cat, it was boredom. On a much brighter note, this is a fabulous year for parent/child relationships and whichever category you’re in there should be some special rapport making its presence felt. In the case of parents, a tremendous degree of pride associated with the achievements of their children will be felt. Aquarian children, on the other hand, will come to realise how fortunate they are to have parents who are not only their parents, but who are also their best friends.

The Year Ahead 2006

T

he upcoming year promises to be an exciting one, but also a taxing one if you take on too much or try to do everything all at once. Travel and travel aspects must play a key role in a number of different ways; some Pisceans will find themselves working out new commuter routes to conform with changes of job routine while others will be looking at overseas property. A high percentage of Pisceans will be changing address in 2006 – or at least making plans towards that end. Some changes to career structure seem inevitable, especially at the very beginning of the year and also in the closing weeks. There should be no great surprises in this respect and everything seems to be progressing according to plan. Finances may, on more than one occasion, feel as though they are being a little over-stretched but as long as you are working within budget you should scrape through. Highest period for spending is probably August and September, while the best months for fiscal gain are March, April and

20 Feb – 20 Mar November. Members of the sign who have their eggs in one stock market basket should look to spreading their investments before the mid summer. A career issue in March is worthy of specific mention. You’ll be put in the position of having to make an awkward choice. Do you stick with what you’ve got and what you know, or do you take a chance and dip your pinkies into something new? I suggest you proceed with cautious optimism but don’t burn your bridges until you’re safely on the other side of the river. May is probably the nicest month for romance and affairs of the heart insofar as this is a time to establish and enjoy new romantic unions and to improve existing ones. A tiny word of warning, however, if you’re trying to rekindle old flames. This is something which will end in disappointment, and if not immediately, then definitely a little later on in the game. Fishes who are heavily into the family thing can look forwards to a particularly rewarding twelve months

with news of pregnancies in January or February and births and baptisms in September or October. Younger Piscean females should exercise some caution if procreation is not on their agenda at this point in time. Piscean parents probably have the best of it with lots of reward coming their way second-hand from the achievements of their children and younger folk within the family circle. Having said that, Piscean fathers might finds themselves worrying a bit about their beautiful but under-age daughters! Anyone involved in (a) politics or (b) the Arts can expect to make a lot of headway, especially in February and June, and if you’re fighting for a cause, then either that cause or your efforts to publicise it will be recognised and rewarded before the year is done. In many ways 2006 can be seen as a time where there are many different rewards falling into place as a result of a lot of hard work and effort over years gone by. No, you won’t just sit on your laurels, but yes, you will at least recognise the worth of some of your achievements.

21 Mar – 20 Apr

The Year Ahead 2006

I

t’s going to be a New Year of clearing the decks of a lot of old rubbish – sweeping out the dusty corners of your life and starting things afresh with a new mandate and a much more clearly defined set of targets and ambitions. One of the most important aspects of the year involves taking on fresh responsibilities and making some hard commitments where romantic relationships are concerned. The month of May will be an important time for finding new romances and moving more deeply into existing partnerships and unions. This situation will have a knock-on effect right the way through the rest of the year, and will even have a powerful and benign influence over your financial circumstances. Two people can live more cheaply than one and if a partner’s cash can bolster your own budgets you should be laughing all the way from the bedroom to the bank! The whole of the summer should be a very warm and beautiful period for love affairs, and probably with

66

the emphasis on the word “love” rather than the word “affair”. Jobs and careers, while important, will not be nearly as important to you as they have been in the past as the romantic vibration seems to dominate every aspect of your life. Having said that, 2006 should not be either a difficult or a problematic year for financial and business affairs, and almost certainly a very high percentage of Arians can expect to make a couple of giant strides forward in the autumn with the month of November being especially significant. Travel aspects have an influence throughout the year especially in late May and mid July, but the really strong travel aspects centre on December, so this could be a house move, a holiday of a lifetime, or (given the sexual intensity of the summer) a honeymoon! Anyone involved with charities or who is working in the service industry should have a particularly auspicious start to the year where personal charisma and political clout will be doing a lot to

impress some of the other folk you have around you at this time. Early year financial promotions are probably not going to happen, but there most certainly will be a promotion in the realms of your self-esteem and in your levels of responsibility. Arian mothers who have children preparing to fly the nest will experience a very special sensation of freedom and excitement. All Arians are going to be quite determined to live their lives to the full – yes, possibly in an attempt to make up for some lost time, or just as easily to make the most of this marvellous time they’ve got right here and now! Younger Arians who are still battling through the Blitzkrieg of the educational system will have a somewhat varied year with some “high” highs in January, some “low” lows in March, lot of distractions throughout the summer and some very sticky exams in the autumn that can only be passed if you’re prepared to put in the prep work and study.

The Year Ahead 2006

n 2006 things will be somewhat disjointed and it won’t always be easy to keep both your business life and your emotional life on an even keel. When one is up the other will be down, and vice versa. Regardless of age and sex you’re going to be doing battle with some elements of physical tiredness (which will come from burning the candle at both ends and trying to do too much all at once) and quite a number of ongoing financial frustrations. 2006 will be a worthy and remunerative year for you, but there are consistently shifting patterns of emphasis on the job scene and you’ll never have quite as much as you want, to do some of the things you want to do. Regardless of sex and age, there will be ongoing battles with bureaucracy and people who feel (wrongly) that they have some authority over you. This is particularly significant in the month of March but it bubbles on throughout the year on a number of different levels.

Thus, a lot of your time is going to be spent fighting for some greater sense of personal freedom and the chance to do more of what you want to do at the expense of not doing so much of what other people say you’ve got to do! One particular work (or artistic) project will dominate much of your time during the early months of the year culminating in a marvellous success story around about April. Indirectly this might tie in with strong travel aspect in late April or early May. Either way, the springtime is important for reunions with key people and players that you have not seen in a number of years. Some, if not all of these folk must inevitably bring some influence to bear on your long term future plans and interests. This comes at a time when you will be exploring new business partnerships and working associations in an attempt to break free from some of the not so successful projects of your past.

On more than one occasion health aspects (yours and other peoples’) will become something of an issue, and in your case, if you’re feeling less than 100% be advised that four days in bed and two weeks off work now is far better than four weeks in bed and four months off work a year or so down the road. Circulation problems are one threat and arthritis is another. Stress is something else which should not, on any account, be ignored. While there are a number of lovely periods throughout the year for romance and affairs of the heart, the month of June won’t be one of them, for this is a time when certain issues of imbalance within a relationship are dealt with, one way or another. Maybe this can’t be achieved easily or without a few tears, but, thank God, once you’re moving into the late summer and the autumn, affairs of the heart improve and stabilise and are kept on a much more even keel.

The Year Ahead 2006

G

emini people can sometimes be a little frivolous and they are certainly one of the most light hearted signs of the Zodiac – thus it is a little surprising to realise that 2006 brings a major shift of emphasis in the Gemini psyche. This will be a year in which practical matters dominate the list of priorities, and although I am not saying that there will not be any emotional highlights, it does seem as though jobs, careers, freedom and independence are recognised as being significantly more important than they have ever been in the past. With this level of focus and concentration 2006 looks as though it is going to be an important breakthrough year for all career and business ambitions: with February being a key month for launching new ideas and November being the time when you recognise those ideas have been brilliantly successful. Personal finances, while never really bad at any time throughout the year, get a notable boost in the month of July.

68

Romance is not entirely dead this year – just a little muted. June promises to be a powerful month for affairs of the heart, especially in the area of wild flings and holidays romances. Providing things are kept reasonably light there shouldn’t be too many problems, but the moment anyone starts coming on too heavy and start getting loads of jealous/possessive energies, I get the feeling that you’re going to be backing away like a scalded cat or a cornered rat! Even in long-standing relationships and established partnerships, the emotional note needs to be lightened if those unions are going to flourish into the future. I think you’ll be trying very hard to achieve this end, but you will not always get the co-operation and understanding that you need from other people to make this happen. Those problems you can sort out, you’ll sort – and those that you can’t you’ll simply put on the back burner and focus your energies away from them to concentrate on those practical matters that we were

talking about earlier. August, perhaps a little obviously, is a most opportune month for travel, so logically we’re looking at summer holidays here. Travel aspects kick in quite strongly around the end of October as well, with the suggestion of necessary journeys tied in with family dramas beyond your control On the subject of family dramas, there may well be a few of these occurring throughout the year, which are absolutely no fault of your own, and therefore you’ll find them increasingly tiresome. Something will lead you to back away from them: “this is your problem, so don’t expect me to sort it out.” November is a period where divided loyalties between your professional life and your personal life do come to something of a critical head (which may be no bad thing if it clears the air) and at least December promises to be a calmer, brighter month across the board as the right compromises are found and put in place.

22 June – 22 July

The Year Ahead 2006

our interests will bounce backwards and forwards between romance and career ambitions in 2006. I see no reason why you can’t have the best of both worlds, but you’ll make a mountain out of a molehill over this and put yourself through unnecessary degrees of anguish and frustration. The beginning of the year sees you full of financial vim and vigour with your ambitions and targets clearly defined, but the romantic aspects of February (possibly tying in with overseas travel and some kind of holiday romance) brings you up short and you have to reassess your priorities. March and April see you enjoying the benefits of compromise, but once you’re moving into May and the high summer the pressure will be on. You’ll want to spend as much time as possible with a loved one, but you’ll also want to hit your work targets as well, and it will seem that there simply isn’t enough time to do both. There is actually an obvious solution, and that is

to do all you can to involve a partner in your working life and let them carry some of the load for you. Either way there are some new work projects coming on line in June, and while these look extremely promising, don’t rush or push things through. Take your time and pay attention to detail, and wherever possible delegate responsibility to other people around you who should be more than willing to pull their weight and prove to you just how indispensable they are. Cancerian parents may have some problems in the late summer when their children want to do things that the parents do not want them to do. If your kids are under fourteen then you’ve got a sporting chance of getting your own way, but if they’re over fourteen I’d say the chances of you getting your own way are pretty slim. Educational issues are very relevant in the autumn of the year – and indeed not just where children are concerned. This could well be a time

when you find yourself learning new job skills or embarking upon courses of adult education. Travel aspects seem particularly relevant for August and December and over the year as a whole there may be significantly more travel in connection with business and work related subjects than ever before. A December project may play havoc with Christmas plans – but being a Cancerian, perhaps this was your intention all along? I suppose, when I try to pull everything together for you, 2006 is going to be a year of new romantic interest and an intensification of all things sexual, while at the same time providing you with splendid career and work opportunities. Eventually you’ll realise you can have the best of both worlds, although it will inevitably involve making a few small compromises, telling a few small white lies and learning how to be in two places at exactly the same time – well, sort of, anyway…

The Year Ahead 2006

I

n some ways I think that 2006 is going to be a very unusual year for the majority of Leos, insofar as it looks like it’s going to be a very domestic year with the emphasis on family issues. This does not mean that there is any absence of progress on the career or job scene, but it does intimate slow and steady progress rather than rushing around like a headless chicken,up to your back teeth with dubious deals and shortcut “get rich quick” schemes. This quality of energy also affects romantic relationships and affairs of the heart. Stable and established unions will trundle on predictably, new romances (sparks of ignition in March and July) develop at a gentle pace, building on the vibration of friendship before blossoming into the full bloom of commitment over the autumn of the year. Without drama, you will be removing a lot of old rubbish from your life, especially in the early months of 2006, and this is also a healing period

Vision 10

70

23 July – 22 Aug

where you move out of the shadow of any lingering illnesses and put some of your past emotional pain behind you. You will be very aware of the support and understanding that you are receiving from family and close friends, and while this doesn’t equate with Swiss bank accounts in Zurich, it does represent a very different wealth factor that should be savoured and not taken for granted. Children in particular have a vital role to play in your life this year, and 2006 could well be a year of pregnancy and birth for a high percentage of Leo ladies of child-bearing age. May is probably one of the best months of the year for careers and work ambitions, but these may well revolve around who you know, rather than what you can do. Elderly members of the sign will be contemplating retirement packages at this time, with some significant changes in attitude. Those of you who may have said “I’m not going to retire yet because I’ve still got far too

much to do” may well realise that if they are going to do what they want to do, they will have to get off the 9 to 5 treadmill to do it! The late summer (July?) could well see a renaissance of spiritual interests as you find yourself able to look outside of your own little world in search of the answers you seek to the questions you have been asking for so many years. October promises to be an interesting and exciting period where (a) long-term plans laid ages ago start coming to fruition and (b) plans for further future endeavour are put firmly into place with the blessing and co-operation of all concerned. A warning note suggests you should be rather sensitive towards the needs of others around you as you march through December towards Christmas. However confident you feel, don’t go throwing your weight about, or the jovial vibes of family good fortune could suddenly start going a little off key.

The Year Ahead 2006

R

ather an eventful year with the keyword being communication. This skill has significance in your place of work and anyone involved in the world of IT can expect a really important breakthrough period during the summer months where long term career ambitions are concerned. Even if this is not your forte, communications with colleagues and friends are still highlighted and you need to make sure that (a) you understand what other people are saying to you and (b) as importantly, they understand what you are saying to them. Communications within emotional relationships and love affairs are just as important, and although it isn’t particularly easy for Virgo born folk, you need to try to be a lot more open and trusting with your emotions, even if (in March) this leaves you feeling a bit vulnerable and (in July) a little bit silly. There is probably a midsummer crisis where a relationship is concerned. Someone has got the wrong

23 Aug – 22 Sept end of the stick, has put two and two together and got five – and it can all be sorted out quite easily. Words can get us into so much trouble sometimes, so make sure you back yours up with the right actions and all will be well. March will be a busy month work-wise, but April seems to be an even busier period on the social scene, especially if new romantic connections are being made then. Do be a bit careful healthwise this Spring; watch what you eat and more importantly, where you’re eating it. Cheap burgers from roadside “caffs” should be perceived as a definite no-no! May is a month during which emotional relationships intensify and June will bring some divided loyalties between family and new friends – and also between romantic aspirations and career ambitions. If someone is falsely thinking that your job is more important to you than they are, for heaven’s sake, move Heaven and Earth to prove them wrong. (On the

other hand, if your job is more important; carry as normal!) In August you will come under heavy pressure to make important decisions. If you know what to do, then do it. If you don’t know what to do, just pull back and give yourself some more time and breathing space; what might be an impossible decision in August could become quite an easy choice by November. I don’t want to end this on a sour note, but your most dangerous month of the year is going to be December when you’ll be living with the decisions you made in November. You may be under pressure to change your mind about a few things, and with Christmas just around the corner, you may be tempted to do just that in an attempt to keep other people sweet and happy. Some strength will be required to stick to your guns in the face of opposition from people who mean well, but who don’t know you quite as well as they think they do.

The Year Ahead 2006 23 sept – 23 Oct

A

ssume that you’ve paid your fiver to see the gypsy fortune teller at the end of the pier, what is she going to tell you? There’s no ambiguity here at all – she’s going to be telling you to follow your head and to ignore the flutterings of your heart. Now what I am saying is that whether this is something you should be doing or not, it is going to be what you will be doing, and as such 2006 will be a blazingly good year for jobs, careers, finances and the finding of far greater degrees of personal freedom. However, where affairs of the heart are concerned, there could be trouble ahead. If nothing else, this is a year of repositioning and initiating some fairly serious and irrevocable changes to both the social and emotional aspects of your life. January and February are excellent months for launching new business projects and by March you should see some notable financial gains bolstering up your bank accounts. Your qualities of leadership are well to the fore

72

in this first quarter of the year but other people may be more than a little envious of your talents and, sadly, there’ll be some back-biting and criticism behind the scenes. This will give you some pause for thought and you will have to reassess some of your loyalties where a couple of “old friends” are concerned. Some important work-related decisions will be made in the April to May period which will make you feel a lot happier, but which will not go down well with lovers and partners who will feel that you are paying too much attention to your professional life and not enough attention to them. This is probably an accurate assessment and suggests there are some issues that need resolving on the home front. The latter part of May sees you trying your best to shore up relationships and have lots of long conversations trying to put emotional problems into perspective. Some Librans will be noticeably more successful than others! The mid-summer is a time of

compromise, and while you’ll be getting on with things as best you can, there will be a mood of resentment lurking in the background. There are some good career opportunities that you’ll be inclined to pass on for fear of upsetting the domestic apple cart, and while that might be okay for a couple of months, come the autumn you’ll be suffering from a rising head of steam that may well push you into impulsive actions and choices around November. Impulsive though they may be, they are not necessarily the wrong actions and choices, and if nothing else 2006 is a vital year for defining your own needs and priorities and also for getting rid of a lot of detritus that has cluttered up your life for far too long. If this all sounds a bit “heavy” let’s lighten it up for you by putting it in softer terms; all I am talking about here is taking charge of your own life and arriving at a position where you are no longer prepared to take the soft options or be satisfied with taking (and being seen as) second best.

The Year Ahead 2006

T

here’s a really rather lovely mood of lethargy blowing through the house of Scorpio during the better part of 2006 and the emphasis seems to be on pleasure rather than business with some happy bouts of hedonism making their presence felt on a very regular basis. You’ll tend to be dismissive of authority and you’re not going to be in much of a mood to take life too seriously. While I think this is an absolutely fabulous trend, I have to say that it is probably going to be very annoying to some of the other people you have around you. They will think that you should be working your fingers to the bone and, because they have to take things seriously, then so should you! Personally, I don’t think you’re having any of that silly philosophy and if other people can’t understand where you’re coming from, you’ll be inclined to see that as being their problem and not yours! By the way, don’t think that this trend just centres upon the young! It touches everyone in the Scorpio spectrum and even the most mature members of the sign will find

24 Oct – 23 Nov themselves experiencing a new burst of fun energy that lifts the spirits. I suspect that some critical issues dragged over from the previous years will be resolved very early in 2006 (January to February) and as a huge weight is removed from your shoulders there is this exquisite feeling of lightness and brightness. Either way a lot of restrictions are being dumped in the dustbin and this is a new year for doing all of those things you’ve wanted to do for ages but haven’t been able to do for a whole host of different reasons. Maybe there is some determination here to make up for lost time – and nowhere is this more apparent than in affairs of the heart and the sexual agenda. 2006 will be a sexy year and a romantic year, but I suspect it will be the sexual attraction that leads to the romance and you should be aware that March and April are going to be key months for redesigning your bedroom! May sees you having to knuckle down to some work projects but your heart won’t be in it and you’ll be going

through the motions for the sake of the money. Come June you’ll be inclined to think that money is not that important and use what you’ve got to get more of what you want in that other pressing department of your life – yes, we’re back to the bedroom again! June also augers well for overseas travel and there could, I suppose, be a teeny-weeny little problem here if you want to go to some hedonistic hot-spot in the Med while your partner wants to go to Bournemouth or Margate. Regardless of where a partner might want to go, you’ll be hitting that hot-spot! There is actually a very serious issue working its way through 2006 and you come to understand and appreciative an incredibly valuable lesson that other people take a lifetime to learn (and some people go to their graves never learning it). The lesson is simply this: we do not live to work, and although we sometime have to work to live, that work should never become so important that we forget how to live, forget how to laugh and forget what it feels like to be free.

The Year Ahead 2006

I

n a host of different ways 2006 places an accent over the concepts of education and learning. This trend will manifest itself in many different ways across the board and isn’t just geared towards children and their exam results. On the one hand, many adult Sagittarians will find themselves looking for new jobs or job opportunities that will require some degree of re-training (March and April is a high profile period for this scenario, and then it crops up again in September and October). On an entirely different level 2006 will be a year for learning just where you stand within the framework of relationships, not to mention your relationship with yourself! For too long Sagittarians have been living their lives for other people and this is a year where the worm is likely to turn! You learn to stand a bit more firmly on your own two feet and do significantly more to help yourself do what you want to do! By the end of May you will have resolved a number of problems, made a

74

24 Nov – 21 Dec number of key decisions and your confidence will be much higher than it’s been for ages. With the advent of the month of June that confidence will be challenged, not so much by situations but more by people close to you who don’t think you’re doing the right thing – or, in other words, because you won’t be doing what they want you to do and expect you to do, they’ll start giving you a hard time. Your challenge here is to rise above any form of criticism and ignore any advice that goes against the grain of your ambitions and gut instincts.During the summer, Sagittarian parents may feel some special concern for the educational welfare of their children and some important choices with regard to schools and schooling will be under hard revue. Autumn brings a positive resolution to this trend and the latter part of the year will see parents being highly delighted by the efforts and successes of their offspring. With regard to romance and affairs of the heart, established

relationships may undergo some change of direction around the July period of the year, but all in all, old unions retain their strength and integrity. Shaky relationships, or indeed relationships that have had more than their share of heartache over the last few years will now find closing resolution. If we are to find the true spirit of Sagittarian romance then we must look to the 15 – 19 age group, who, even if nobody else does, will have a very sparkling (and educational!) time within the framework of their love affairs. November looks like being your lowest period in the year and there is a trend here where you might end up being rather disappointed in the actions and attitudes of people who really should know you better. This passes in December, but you’ll still be in a bit of a thoughtful mood as you move towards Christmas. While you will be quite pleased with your personal progress in 2006 you’ll realise that there is still a lot more work to be done in 2007.
