Star Letter No secrets please! I have just read Vision magazine for the first time. I think it’s fantastic! I’m a 14 year old Wiccan and get very fed up when magazines or TV programmes don’t do the proper research and give Wiccans, Pagans and psychics a bad reputation. This usually means that people keep their beliefs secret. But this magazine is very open and I admire that. I just want everyone to know that you should always stand up for what you believe in, no matter what it is: people may judge you but only you can control your beliefs. Holly Nolan, Sandbach, Cheshire.

Great fun I would like to order the first 8 issues of Vision magazine. I really do love reading Vision, it’s great fun and very full of interesting and great info. Thanks a lot Vision. I can’t wait to receive my back copies! Miss Laura Campbell, Bingley, West Yorkshire.

Synchronicity Just before Christmas I was in a newsagents in Bedford where I saw your magazine (issue 10). I took it to the counter to pay and the shop assistant asked me if it was a Spiritual magazine. I asked if she was interested in Spiritual Matters, she replied that she was - she had recently lost a family member and needed to know if they were ok. I was able to direct her to the local Spiritualist Church. I am a regular reader of your magazine and I am used to such synchronicities affecting my life. I always enjoy all the articles in your magazine as they are not the usual ‘take’ on the subjects covered. I really enjoyed your interview with Gordon Smith. Keep up the good work. Richard Freeman explores our lochs and lakes and the legends of the monsters hidden within.

A

sk any group of people to name a famous monster and along with King Kong, Godzilla, and the Daleks, you can bet someone will say Nessie. The idea of a strange beast inhabiting the dark, icy waters of Britain’s largest lake is an appealing one. It is said that back in 565 AD Saint Columba met the beast in the River Ness whilst converting the Picts. From then on, stories of a ‘water horse’ inhabiting the Loch circulated. It was not until May of 1933 that the monster first grabbed the public’s attention. Mr John Mackay and his wife were driving along the newly created road on the northern shore when they saw some huge animal rolling and plunging in the water. They reported the sighting and the Inverness Courier described it as a ‘monster’. Thus the Loch Ness Monster was born.

6 Vision 12

Then on July 22nd 1933. Mr George Spicer, proprietor of a firm of London tailors, and his wife were enjoying a motoring holiday in the Highlands. Their enjoyment was rudely interrupted at 4 o’clock in the afternoon as they drove from Dores to Foyers via the winding loch side road. “We were midway between Dores and Foyers on the south bank of the loch when my wife exclaimed, “What on earth is that?” I was looking ahead as

bodies all of who seemed incredulous. I am willing to take an oath, and so is my wife, that we saw this Loch Ness beast.” Since 1933 over 10,000 people claimed to have seen the monster. An image emerged of a 30-foot creature with four flippers, a long neck, and a short tail. Dozens of photographs and several sequences of cine film have been taken. Sadly these have proved to be hoaxes, cases of mistaken identity, or a just too poor quality to be of any use.

...my wife exclaimed, “What on earth is “that?” I was looking ahead as my wife

spoke; I observed the most extraordinary form of an animal crossing the road. It was horrible – an abomination.” my wife spoke; I observed the most extraordinary form of an animal crossing the road. It was horrible – an abomination. First we saw an undulating sort of neck, a little thicker than an elephant’s trunk. It did not move in the usual reptilian fashion but, with three arches in it’s neck, it shot across the road until a ponderous body about four feet high came into view. When we reached the part of the road it had crossed, we stopped, but there was no sign of it. It had been a loathsome sight. It seems futile to describe it, because it was like nothing I have read about or seen. It was terrible. Its colour, so far as the body was concerned, could be called a dark elephant grey. It looked like a huge snail with a long neck. I reported the affair to various scientific

Less easy to explain are some anomalous sonar readings. In 1968 Professor D G Tucker of the University of Birmingham conducted some sonar experiments at the Loch. The Professor employed digital sonar that fed acoustic returns into a digital computer, that in turn sorted the data and displayed it on an oscilloscope screen. A 16 mm cine camera was synchronized with the equipment so that every pulse of energy was filmed. The set up was fixed at Temple Pier. A cross section of the Loch was kept under constant surveillance for 19,960 minutes. Two moving objects with a minimum length of 12.5 feet were recorded. One was close to the bottom of the Loch, the other was rising vertically. On August 28th eight large objects were recorded rising from the bottom at a distance of 50 metres and moving at up to 17mph. The objects were around 6 metres (20 feet) long. There is nothing of that size among the known fauna of the Loch. In 1969 Robert E Love swept the Loch on the motorboat Rangitea fitted with a Honeywell Scanner II-F sonar. He tracked a target north east of Foyers 190 metres ahead of the boat and 67 metres down. He estimated that it was of

comparable size to a pilot whale at around 6 metres (20 feet). In 1987 Adrian Shine led Operation Deepscan. A flotilla of 24 motor cruisers all fitted with Lowrence X16 echo sounders. They swept the length and breadth of the Loch. A number of strong contacts were made with objects at about 150 feet deep. One contact stands out above the others. Made at 606 feet it was subsequently independently recorded by another boat that was not one of Shine’s flotillas. This illuminates interference from other boats in the Deepscan group and suggests that the object had moved away and then returned after the Deepscan vessals had moved on. Most people wrongly assume that Loch Ness is the world’s only monster-haunted lake. Many lakes in other countries have reports of anomalous animals attached to them. In fact, in Scotland alone, there are around 34 such bodies of water. After Loch Ness, Loch Morar is the most famous. Morar is a deep glacial loch much like Loch Ness. At 11 miles long it is smaller but its depth of 1000 feet makes it the deepest lake in the UK. Its resident monster has been named Morag, a derivative of the Gaelic Mordhobhar meaning big water The most dramatic encounter took place on August 16th 1969. Duncan McDonnell and William Simpson were returning from a trip up the loch. It was around 9.00 pm but still light. McDonnell was at the wheel and the boat was doing seven knots. He writes: “I heard a splash or disturbance in the water astern of us. I looked up and saw about twenty yards behind us this creature coming directly after us in our wake. It only took a matter of seconds to catch up with us. It grazed the side of the boat, I am quite certain this was unintentional. When it struck, the boat seemed to come to a halt or at least slow down. I grabbed the oar and was attempting to fend it off, my one fear being that if it got under the boat it might capsize it.” Simpson also confirmed the story. They estimated it to be 9 metres

(30 feet). The skin was rough and dirty brown in colour. It had three humps that protruded 18 inches out of the water. McDonnell thought they may have been undulations rather than humps. McDonnell reported seeing a snake-like head, a foot across, held 18 inches out of the water. Loch Shiel is 17 miles long, a mile wide and 420 feet deep. Its monster has been un-surprisingly named Shielag. One of the earliest reports is from 1905. An old man called Ian Crookback and two boys watched a three-humped creature through a telescope as they crossed the loch opposite Gasgan in a mail steamer. Another report is of a long necked monster with a wide mouth and seven humps. The creature was observed through a telescope by Ronald McLeod as it emerged from the water near Sandy Point in 1926. So just what is lurking in these deep Lochs? Certainly many of the sightings can be explained. In deep, steep-sided lakes a boat wake can rebound and be visible as a long, thin, humped wave long after the boat that made it has vanished. Strange undercurrents at Loch Ness have been shown to drag debris such as logs against the normal flow, creating the illusion of a monster. Seals and large sturgeon have been known to enter deep lakes and could be easily mistaken for something stranger. The most popular theory, that

the monster is a surviving form of plesiosaur is sadly the least likely. These were cold-blooded, sea-dwelling reptiles that died out 65,000,000 years ago. They were also air breathers. If the animals in these lakes were air breathers they would have been seen breathing more often. I think the best possibility is that Nessie and her kind are actually giant sterile eels. The common eel swims out to the Sargasso Sea to breed then dies. The baby eels follow scent trails back to their ancestral fresh waters homes and the cycle begins again. Sometimes, however, a mutation occurs and the eel is sterile. These stay in fresh water and keep on growing. Known as eunuch eels, no one knows how old they get or how big. In February 2004 two Canadian tourists came upon a 25-foot eel floating in the shallows of Loch Ness. At first they thought it was dead but when it began to move they beat a hasty retreat. In the 1980s a 20-foot eel was reported in the Birmingham Ship Canal. Another 20 foot eel was supposedly caught in the cooling system in some aluminum works in Dores in the 1990s. One theory suggests that these rare, naturally occurring mutations may now be on the increase due to pollution. PCBs and Beta Blocker chemicals have long been implicated in causing sterility in fish. Could they be causing more eunuch eels in the deep lakes of Scotland and are these eels really the Loch Ness monster?

Vision talks to Clint Denyer about his amazing real-life encounter with UFOs

M

y wife and I took a late winter holiday in November 2001, an ordinary package holiday. However, it turned out to be anything but ordinary! The extraordinary started on the second night in Cyprus. We had come back to our apartment after a meal out and we went out onto the balcony to sit and take in the atmosphere. I didn’t have to wait for long before I could see that there was something odd going on outside. I observed some very unusual activity in the starlit sky as well as across and over the sea. The view we had from the balcony was spectacular, it overlooked the bay. We were not the only ones looking at the strange phenomena, I noticed that the lady from the next apartment along was on her balcony viewing the same scene. I rushed and grabbed the video camera and started filming the sky. There were strange and unusual shapeshifting objects moving around in the distance. Hazel, the lady next door, was on holiday with her grandson, Matt, who also came out to look. We all saw red, yellow and blue lights in circles, which would then suddenly change shape in the sky before our eyes. I’d never imagined that I’d ever see anything like this in real-life! Scanning across the horizon I could see a huge light about 3 miles away. with the naked eye it looked huge! I imagined that if I could just walk up to

8 Vision 12

it, its size would have been incredible! I grabbed my video camera and used the zoom to bring it up close. The centre of the light had a cell-shaped structure and it was vibrating: it was as if it was a living entity, although I assumed it was a space ship. On its outside edge was a green tinge of what can only be described as an aura. I could feel the energy and see the vibrating and pulsing.

all the time. It was only the huge circular light, the cell-shaped ‘mothership’ which appeared to stay in the same place and keep the same shape and colour, although it would periodically completely change from a circle. The whole thing was truly amazing, the ship looked like an ancient craft with giants sitting within it. Then other smaller lights came out of the

At the front was a huge band of lights, “ flashing symbols across the top of the ship (reminiscent of Close Encounters of the Third Kind).”

After a while, I noticed that small ‘ships’ started coming out of larger ones (these were the coloured lights) and their colours and shapes were changing

mothership, I had been filming on my video camera all the time, when I slowed the footage down and played it in slow motion I could see a purple triangular

craft coming out of the mothership. The whole night was way beyond the realms of anything that would be classed as normal and there was no planes, helicopter or weather balloons around. The other thing that I noticed is that there was not a sound to be heard at all: it was deadly silent, except the sound of the sea. Apart from those mentioned, there didn’t seem to be anyone else witnessing the lights and shapes, despite the fact that the whole spectacle went on for some hours. While discussing what was happening with the people next door, I found out that Matt was a true sceptic regarding all things paranormal … within a matter of hours he was the one that was phoning reception to order a taxi to take us to where the big light was! Matt’s knowledge of Cyprus was quite good for he had been to Cyprus a lot of times, so Matt and I bundled into a taxi and headed for Cape Greko, which he knew was the next bay along. We asked the taxi driver about the lights but he didn’t speak very much English and he just smiled. In the end we didn’t go to Cape Greko, but carried on to Agia Napa, It was deserted (remember this was out of season, normally it would be throbbing with clubbers!). Picture the scene now. I was with a young guy I didn’t know, in a beach town I had never been to before and in the pitch dark. We climbed through the bushes towards the beach, we didn’t even know how we would get back to our apartment! I, like my new-found friend, were running on adrenalin because of what we had seen so far. As we walked along the footpath that led round the coastline and back from the sea, the sight that met our eyes was amazing! The lights were closer to us now as was the huge mother ship. Things became even weirder as the mother ship changed from its ‘usual’ cell-shape to a huge piece of land jutting out into the sea! Obviously, I thought I was imagining this – I was having enough trouble believing my eyes, but the

mothership chaning into a piece of land was taking my belief to extremes. Matt, who had been to Cyprus many times, reassured me that the land that I saw was not normally there and I hadn’t imagined it! As we walked towards the mothership, we could see two prominent lights on top of a huge mound. They

out window. I can only describe this as something from The Flintstones: it looked like a window cut out from a cave, it was large and there was blue arc lighting coming from within, similar to the light you might see when someone is welding. We both felt uneasy and excited at the same time. As we walked down to

looked like flashlights and I thought I could see people holding them and waving them around as if they were looking for something. If these were torches, then they would have been torches that were bigger than we were and the ‘people’ holding them would have to be giants! We both watched transfixed. I was disappointed to discover that my video camera would not work now, in fact it hadn’t since we’d reached the beach. This is a common occurrence with paranormal phenomena, particularly UFO contact, or so witnesses have said. We had this sudden urge to get nearer, so we carried on walking. It was then that the ship came up really close. At the front was a huge band of lights, flashing symbols across the top of the ship (reminiscent of Close Encounters of the Third Kind). It was absolutely huge. As we watched the front of the ship, we would then see a side view with one cut-

the sea the huge ship moved away. Then as we approached the sea, something very strange happened. Both of us stopped dead in our tracks at the same time and we saw something shoot across the top of the water like a white silver orb. It was travelling so fast we caught only glimpses of it, but it was an amazing experience and very difficult to describe. We now got a strong feeling that we should not go any further. We thought that perhaps this silver orb was a warning probe from the ship, and we both felt it was not safe to stay there anymore. We left in stunned silence, managed to wave a taxi down and went back to our apartments. The experience did not end there, though. The red, blue and yellow lights followed us back and stayed outside within view. We didn’t go to sleep at all that night. I don’t think that I’ll ever forget what happened to me in Cyprus … and I think I’ll be going back!

The Time: A cold November night on the wild, windy moors The Place: The Old Silent Inn, Stanbury, West Yorkshire The Visionaries: Nance Turner-Collings, Dean Ballance and Diana Jarvis by Nance Turner-Collings

ello and welcome my friends to another Vigil. This month we are in Stanbury, North Yorkshire at The Old Silent Inn: a place steeped in history and renowned for its paranormal activity. For this investigation, we thought that we would invite our MD, Sammi Addey, to be an honorary Visionary. She is always pushing us to get results so we thought “well if you think it’s that easy … come and do it yourself!” Being the fearless lass she is, she joined us at the Old Silent Inn and instead of hiding behind her camera, we sent her off to see what she could pick up. Want to know something? We all wish we’d never mentioned it! Read on to find out how Sammi and the team got on …

Dining Room When Dean entered the dining room, the first thing he picked up was Highwaymen. He said he believed that the place used to be a coach house. He could see horse-drawn carriages that used to stop off at the Inn and a water trough. He felt that the dining area used to be a stable and that there was a working blacksmith too. When Sammi was in the room (separately to the rest of us - no cheating now!), she also picked up on the horse and carriages, and could feel them going up and down the street outside. She could sense that there was some kind of bubbly or excited female in the room, and she felt her to be a very friendly lady, an old landlady maybe? When Di entered the room, she sensed a man wearing grey wool trousers, with a rough stubbly chin and dark hair. He told Di that while he was trying to save his sheep at “the grey house up on t’top” he had stumbled and fallen, cracking his head. He remembered the bad weather coming, and then suddenly he was “here”! Di also picked up on a lady in a mop cap with a small girl behind her.

Below: Di dowsing an orb outside a bedroom.

Guest Room 5 In this room we all picked up on a lady, a sweet-natured lady, we all felt that the room was warm and inviting. Di and I both could smell something sweet inside the room, although there was nothing we could see that would create the smell.

moving around too much. When Sammi entered she could feel children, a boy and a girl. She said that they liked to run around, and she felt that they could be quite naughty. She was sure she could hear them giggling! She could also feel a man in the room, who was middle aged and really fed up as “nobody ever gets it right”. As I entered the room I felt quite cold, and heard noises outside in the corridor. I felt that there was a lot of activity in this building at some point, and could see soldiers and a battle being fought. I also felt that there was a hiding place somewhere in the building, but was not sure where. I also picked up on the name ‘Edward’ or ‘Eddie’, and felt he had a connection to the place.

In this room, Sammi picked up on a guy who was sat on the bed tapping his feet, and she felt drained in this room. Di felt the same, she said there was a strange atmosphere, and felt that she was being followed by the woman from room 5. I felt very claustrophobic in this room, like the energy was disjointed, and that the room didn’t know what it was.

When Dean was in the room, he picked up on ‘April’, but he wasn’t sure if it was a name or the month. He could also sense an old lady who he said used to occupy this room. When Di was in the room she picked up on a little old lady, and could smell something bad, like a bad gutter smell. She said that this lady used to live here and sometimes moves things around. Di also felt quite dizzy in here, and she felt that the energies were

Bar When I was in the bar, I picked up on a Royal connection, and felt that this Inn should be more like a house than a pub. I did feel that there was a strong farming connection even though the place felt regal. I also felt that some remains had been found of more than one person, and saw a pool of blood. Sammi said that the bar area felt like it was a ‘men only’ bar, where a certain

History of The Old Silent Inn

group of men met every week for some kind of celebration.

Kitchen Sammi felt that the kitchen area was the back yard at some point, and felt a pain in her back. She also found it hard to breathe and had a pain in her head. When I was in the kitchen, it felt like I should have been stood outside, I felt that the kitchen should have been somewhere else, and I got a pain in my head and down my back.

The Old Silent Inn at Stanbury is over 400 years old and has always been a place for refreshment. It has been a farmhouse, but always a stoppingoff place and a coaching house. It got its name, according to legend, when Bonnie Prince Charlie stayed there while fleeing his pursuers. He was being tracked after the failure of the 1745 rebellio. The dining room used to be a stable and Charlie kept his horse tethered there. The locals were asked not to reveal his whereabouts and they never did, hence the pub’s name. This would explain Di and Nance’s impressions about soldiers and a Civil War. Nance was also spot on … Bonnie Prince Charlie’s full name was Charles Edward Louis John Casimir Silvester Maria Stuart! Sammi was also right about the fire. The Old Silent Inn was ravaged by a fire in 1992 which did extensive damage: so much

damage that the pub was left uninhabited for 2 years. Part of the pub was rebuilt using original timbers and the rest came from sailing ships. Dean’s water trough did indeed exist, it was hidden out of sight outside, Dean had no chance of seeing it when he made the statement. He was right about the horses and carriages too. As for hauntings, tradition holds that a kindly old landlady provided food for the wild cats that foraged on the moors. She would announce feeding time by ringing a bell from a doorway of the inn that has since been blocked up, and this is where a ghostly tinkling is now heard. Both Di and Nance heard bells - was this the former landlady? There is also the ghost of a little girl with ringlets is alleged to occupy rooms 10 and 7. Many have reported having their nose tickled and she moves things and hides them.

Above left: Nance with orb on bar steps. Left: Orb flying over dining room table. Below: Diana dowsing another orb outside a bedroom.

Cellar Di felt soldiers here, one of them had been hit on the head and buried outside, his skull entirely cracked open. She picked up on a Civil War, a battle that raged on, with a lot of casualties. She said that not many of the men would have made it back home safely. I just got a bad headache in the cellar, and the atmosphere felt really weird.

Outside

Emf And Dowsing

When outside we all picked up on animals, like pigs and sheep, also milk churns. Sammi picked up on a fire, and a woman that died in it, and had something to do with a window or roof? She picked up on a big black dog that had been seen by many. I could hear Chimes, maybe a clock or bell of some sort, and felt that this area, even though remote, would always have been busy. Di also picked up on Church bells, and said that it’s not a cheerful sound, she also felt that there are some graves over the top of the slope behind the garden, and felt that these were casualties from a Civil War.

The EMF picked up nothing at all, even though a full sweep of the building was

done. The Dowsing rods, however, picked up on energies in the Dining room near the window seat; and in the Kitchen under the loft hatch. The weirdest reading was around the first window as you enter the building, the rods seemed to shake. The rods also seemed to pick up spirit movement near the toilet area. So there you have it my friends, the end to another Vigil. Congratulations to our Sammi, whom we all thought did really well! Let’s hope she’s pleased with herself, not too much though … she might want to come on more vigils! Only joking Sammi, we love you really! We would like to thank Paul Stapleton and the staff at the Old Silent Inn for their hospitality. You can find the Inn on Hob Lane, Stanbury. You can mail them on info@old-silent-inn.co.uk or phone them on 01535 647437. Next month we are at the Highwayman Tavern, Selby, North Yorkshire

From the normal to the paranormal, BAFTA award-winning Sea of Souls is groundbreaking drama. Diana Jarvis looks behind the scenes

D

r. Who is the one series that most people “of a certain age” will recall as the programme that had them hiding behind the sofa as a child. If you’re comfortable in front of the box now, be warned! Sea of Souls may soon have you running for the safety of your settee … and that’s adults I’m talking about! A hit from the first series, Sea of Souls has received considerable acclaim, (including a BAFTA) and is sold in 40 countries worldwide. Here in the UK it has quite a following, myself included.

Bill Paterson (below right) Bill Paterson (Dr Douglas Monaghan) is still not sure what it is that makes the paranormal “must-see” viewing. “Has it become clearer to me over the years? No, it hasn’t really,” he muses. “Clearly everybody has an awareness of some sort of metaphysical afterlife or existence, but they don’t necessarily do it through the Church of Scotland or their synagogue, or wherever, anymore. Instead, they do it through all sorts of new age experiences. I think part of the interest is that search for meaning and nowadays no-one’s going to knock you on the head, the Spanish inquisition’s not going to come out and say “Off to the rack!” for having unorthodox views. Fortunately, we are in a society where we are allowed to believe that these strange, mystical and psychic things are in the air, if we want to.” Bill’s character is always there with rational answers to what is going on, supporting and encouraging his team. Bill takes a rational view about the paranormal himself. “People are fascinated with the paranormal and issues of reality. We are living in a non-religious age but people are still trying to find extra terrestrial reasons for why things happen. Formal religion is the greatest psychic superstition of all and in the absence of that people often look for alternatives about lives continuing and messages coming from beyond the grave,” explains Bill.

Dawn Steele (Opposite Top) If there is one real believer in the team it’s Justine McManus, played by Dawn Steele. An accomplished actress

14 Vision 12

(who will be remembered by fans of Monarch of the Glen as the incomparable Lexie), Dawn’s opinion of the paranormal is perhpas not that far removed from her character either, nor is her increasing sensitivity. “We shot the second episode in an old disused ironworks at night, which was just horrible. That was a really spooky place,” recalls Dawn. “When you’re filming the kinds of scenes where the subject matter is quite disturbing and you’re somewhere as vast and eerie as that, you can’t help but get a shiver down your spine. There were times at the ironworks

when I felt really spooked out, you know weird noises and tricks of the light - I was like: ‘I want my mum - now!’ There have been loads of wee things that have happened to me on this job where I’ve had a funny feeling about something. I don’t know whether it’s because I’m playing a character who is psychic, but I definitely feel more aware of things like that at the moment. Like I completely guessed that a friend of mine was pregnant. We were out somewhere chatting and suddenly I knew she was expecting. When I said this she insisted she wasn’t and did a brilliant acting job on me. Then ten minutes later she grabbed me in the loos going: ‘I can’t believe you said that because I am, but we’re not telling anyone yet!’ “

Iain Robertson (Below) Craig Stevenson, played by Iain Robertson, is perhaps the most

cynical of the characters in the series. Iain himself is a different kettle of fish. I asked him if he had a belief in the paranormal: “Yes, absolutely. I have always believed that we go somewhere better. I am also quite convinced of psychic ability. I have always had very personal and specific messages myself (from psychics) and when you take a medium like Gordon Smith … he’ll give you first name, middle and last – you can’t argue with that!”

Craig hasn’t really had any personal psychic experiences himself, nor does he believe he is particularly sensitive. However, he does have a belief in psychic skills. “I believe we all have the potential to be psychic. I have a particularly strong connection with my mother, but other than that, I’m an actor and that’s what I want to concentrate on. I think you should do whatever is your gift – we all have one and I believe acting is mine.” So did Iain foresee the success of the series? “ I knew it was good, I never doubted it was a good programme. I did wonder whether people would watch it and accept the cast change (Dawn and Iain became regular characters in the second series), I thought that maybe the audience would have fallen in love with the previous characters.” It’s heartening to know that even after so much time filming together, the cast get on famously. Dawn and Iain have a firm friendship. While I was interviewing Iain told me that Dawn had texted him to let him know she’d rearranged her schedule … so that she could see him appear in Romeo and Juliet! “We all (three) get on very well and work together very well. You would think that after working together solidly over three years we would be sick of the sight of each other … but we’re not”, says Iain. So does Iain think an exploration of the paranormal is a worthy subject for Saturday night TV? “Yes! I also think that the show being based in Scotland is apt. There have been so many discoveries from Scotland by explorers of science: and the paranormal is the last great unknown. The show demonstrates that the paranormal is worthy of respect and should be treated seriously.” Iain finds it amusing that so many women watch the show and talk about it, but men describe it as “that stuff my wife likes”. “They watch it, but won’t tell you. I believe that many people are uncomfortable because the show puts the subject across with realism rather than making it appear fantastical. The odd thing is that the people that watch but won’t admit it are the same ones that go to church regularly. If the characters in Sea of Souls had reports of someone feeding the 5000 with a few loaves and fishes they would be consider that paranormal … and they’d be investigating!” According to Iain, the series will be taking exploring the potential relationship between the paranormal and science. “We (the series) are looking into this next year, we are hoping to cover subjects that tie up the subject matter with science and fact. Einstein looked into other dimensions and scientists are accepting their existence more easily now.” If you think that the days of hiding behind the settee have gone, be warned! Sea of Souls will become cmore unsettling as the series progresses. The similarity between Dr Who and Sea of Souls doesn’t end there, either. The 8th Dr. Who, Paul McGann, will be joining the series for the finale: as a businessman involved in black magic! Time for the sofa ... You can catch Sea of Souls on Saturdays, 9pm, BBC1.

Diana Jarvis explains your weird experiences.

Does Justin attract orbs? Could you possibly have a look at the two photos I have attached? Both of them feature my youngest son, Justin, who was sixteen at the time. They were taken two Christmases ago, on Christmas Day at my mother’s house. We have many other photos of him with orbs, but they seem to appear when we have family gatherings (but only if Justin was present). Tragically, Justin was killed in a motorbike accident on October 26th 2005. Since it happened we’ve taken photos in our home, many of which have orbs. We’ve actually taken photos at the same time in the same room with two different cameras and captured the same orbs with both cameras. Myself, my husband and Justin’s brother Jonathan would very much appreciate your input and advice as to whether or not they are spirit orbs. Heather Airey, Spennymoor, Co. Durham Di’s Answer: It is actually very, very difficult to tell if any ‘orbs’ are really spirit beings. Most orbs are dust, pollen, or water vapour. Sometimes they are reflections from the camera’s flash. I do believe, from my own experiences, that some are spirits, but proving that is another matter! However, because of what you have told me about using different cameras, I suspect that you may have captured spirits around Justin. I sense that he was quite a sensitive and caring young man and my heart goes out to you. I truly believe that Justin is around you: now … and will be in the years to come.

Ouija spirits? My husband and I had been using a Ouija board for about an hour before this picture was taken. I am experienced at using the board and know how to protect myself. We’ve taken lots of photos at different times and usually they (orbs) appear at family gatherings. My husband had his picture taken in exactly the same place as I immediately after, but only two orbs appeared. Judy Leeks, Ipswich, Suffolk. Di’s Answer: Quite a lot of orbs can be explained by dust, maybe some by reflection. However, there are a lot and they are not of the same “type”. I can eliminate the dust/pollen and possibly a few which are reflections … but not all of them. I think it’s more than likely you have a few visitors, Judy! Please note everybody: the Ouija board can be an open invitation to the flotsam and jetsam of the universe, so be SURE you know what you are doing before you use it. If at all unsure, give it a miss!

Phenomena and Feathers I have recently moved into a cottage and have had a series of happenings, which are still going on. The TV will switch itself on and off, pictures fall off walls, the kettle boils by itself – to name but a few. I have joked that it’s my granddad letting me know he’s still around. The strangest happenings are appearances of white feathers. I have found one in my car. I left my car (featherless) and locked it. I found a feather when I returned. I have also found one in a magazine that I had read and put down the same night. We do not have any pets at all in the house … what do you think? Julie Chapman, Melton Ross, Lincolnshire Di’s Answer: All of the experiences you’ve recounted are typical of hauntings. Spirits use electrical energy to manifest or make physical phenomena. The feathers are something entirely different. This phenomena has been on the increase, and it is alleged that feathers are connected with angelic visitations. It sounds to me as if you have a house that is blessed with spirits and angels and it seems that the angels watch you when you’re driving, too! With that sort of energy around you, I wouldn’t be at all surprised if your Granddad was right in there with them!

Diana Jarvis talks to GP Taylor, ex-Anglican exorcist, paranormal expert and author of Shadowmancer

G

raham Taylor (or GP Taylor as his fans will know him) has had a varied career. Shadowmancer, his debut novel has sold over 1 million copies in the UK and over 3 million worldwide. It is published in 43 languages and has rivalled Harry Potter in both its sales and its following. Graham’s journey to best-selling author is both fascinating and varied. He has had careers in rock music, social work and an admirable ten years on the police force; but perhaps he is best-known for being both a parish priest and community exorcist. I asked Graham how he became involved in exorcism in his parish (near Whitby, North Yorkshire). “Every priest, when called upon, is required to act as an exorcist. It used to be a capital offence for a priest to fail in this duty, the failure being seen as a lack of faith and an inability to fulfil work requirements. I found myself being called in by parishioners to get rid of negative influences in their properties. Many properties in the area had histories of tragedy that repeated themselves from occupant to occupant, I was often called in to remove the negative spirits behind this general malaise and break the cycle. In order to equip myself I spoke to the Exorcist from the Diocese and he went through the techniques he used. I then used these to help my

A single ray of sunshine can be blinding when it follows a dark storm. ” parishioners who felt more comfortable with their parish priest than with a priest they didn’t know.” Exorcism is not something that Graham has much time for these days. Although he says that he will help if he can, Graham has a 13 book contract with Faber and Faber and has retired as parish priest.

Shadowmancer is perhaps his most famous book, but since then he has two other books in print: Wormwood and Tersius. Both books look set to become best-sellers too, with Shadowmancer being made into a film by Universal Pictures. Although aimed at children, the books have become popular with adults too. As many of the characters in Graham’s books are inherently evil, I wondered if they were perhaps too scary for children? “There may be evil, but darkness makes the light so much brighter.”, says Graham. “ A single ray of sunshine can be blinding when it follows a dark storm. If we look around the world we can see so much evil and violence, children need to know that there is some hope. They have to be reminded that goodness will prevail. Evil only conquers when good people sit back and do nothing…” What does Graham think has caused the phenomenal success of the books? “I think that people want to experience something supernatural. The issue is that the church has let

them down about these things – God does supernatural and amazing things but these are never fully discussed in church. There are angels, spirits and powers in the Bible, but these are never talked about. For this reason, a lot of people are turning to other things to try to find or express their spirituality, books being just one option.” Graham is now much sought after as an authority on the paranormal. One of his latest forays into television was the series on Tyne Tees Television: G P Taylor’s Uninvited Guests, which included a look behind-the-scenes at Vision. I asked Graham about the series and why he was interested in presenting it. “The majority of programmes on the paranormal are divided into two camps: those that portray the paranormal as a sinister, dark and evil force and those that are an advert for a faith group. I feel it is important that the viewers make up their own minds and the remit of the programme was to allow them to do just that.” It seems that the paranormal is keen to give Graham plenty of opportunity to have something to think about himself. During the filming of the series, there were a number of supernatural occurrences. “During the filming of the show there were an enormous number of happenings. One night the crew and I were staying in a large country house. I actually saw the physical presence of a person in the room and there was the sound of children running up and down the stairs, there was even a phantom dog at the door! A crew-member was staying in the room next to mine and he told me that he has heard voices in his room. There was some evidence of EVP (Electronic Voice Phenomena: ghost voices on tape) on the soundtrack of the programme and the camera batteries kept discharging, even though they had only just been fully charged. In the end I did an exorcism so that we could continue filming.”

All the experiences stay with you, “especially when you work with the

paranormal. It makes you realize that this is real and that there really are powers and principalities. Shakespeare was right - there is more in Heaven and Earth.” So how does Graham feel about these experiences, have they affected him? “All the experiences stay with you, especially when you work with the paranormal. It makes you realize that this is real and that there really are powers and principalities. Shakespeare was right - there is more in Heaven and Earth. I feel that one faith system cannot encapsulate everything.

I have experienced the presence of paranormal forces and I have a faith … I find that these experiences give me faith in my faith. It is a faith that tells me that we will survive physical death, you can be reassured by experiencing the paranormal.” Shadowmancer, Wormwood and Tersius are all published by Faber and Faber. Michael Standing Wolf faces the fearsome Vikings

A

furore Normannorum libera nos domine, said Latin speakers. Skona oss herre från nordmännens raseri, said their enemies closer to home. Oh lord, save us from the rage of the Norsemen, they said in England. In fact, wherever this phrase was echoed, and in whatever tongue, you could be sure that the terror of the Vikings had been felt there previously, at least once. Nothing struck fear into the heart of civilised people like the mention of the Norsemen or Vikings, and Hollywood has made great efforts to perpetuate their image as bloodthirsty barbarians without peers. As is so often the case, the truth is somewhat different. The word Viking seems to have been coined in the 11th century and is almost certainly derived from the Swedish word vik, which means “bay”. Even back then, the connection people drew between the Norsemen and the ocean seems to have been well cast, although some have suggested that the word Viking actually means “pirate”. Although their reputation for violence was not undeserved, most Vikings were actually farmers, fishermen and traders. Unlike other civilisations, the various Viking groups had no common origin in place or time. There is even circumstantial evidence that a handful of the early Vikings may have been African. Nevertheless, these disparate groups eventually bonded together in a cultural alliance that influenced the entire world. It is important to differentiate between the Swedish Vikings and their Dano-Norwegian counterparts. The Danes and Norwegians expanded their territory and influence westwards through Europe towards England. The Swedes largely journeyed eastwards into what is now Russia and beyond. As

Viking influence grew, so did their culture. During the Viking Period (7401060 AD) Swedish Vikings grew in power and numerous small kingdoms were formed. Over an extended period these kingdoms – some only three or four square miles in size – merged until only two “superstates” were left; those of Gotland and Svealand. Eventually these two states merged and became what we now know as Sweden.

Although their “ reputation for violence

was not undeserved, most Vikings were actually farmers, fishermen and traders.” Asgård, Home of the Gods The Vikings had a spiritual life that was both distinctive and unique. Their deities were known as the Aesir, and each possessed his or her own personality, strengths and weaknesses. Viking runestones and jewellery have been found in the Near East, indicating that the Vikings were not averse to exporting their gods and goddesses abroad. To understand the relationship between the Vikings and their deities we need to get a clear picture of how they perceived the universe. According to Norse mythology the gods or Aesir inhabited Asgård. Humans dwelt in Midgård, whilst the giants lived in a curious dimension known as Jotunheim, or Home of the Giants. All three worlds were to be found within Yggdrasil, the World Tree, which is also present in numerous other indigenous cultures around the globe.

Curiously, the Norsemen were not keen on writing down their history. Consequently, archaeologists and historians have had to be very creative when it comes to reconstructing with any accuracy how the Vikings lived. Fortunately, when it came to describing the exploits of their gods they were more willing to put pen to paper.

Odin The greatest of the Norse gods was Odin, often called the God of Gods, King of the Gods, Lord of the Gods or the All-Father. After battles had been fought, Odin would haul the fallen heroes onto his trusty eight-footed horse Sleipner and carry them to the merry halls of Valhalla. Odin had two black ravens named Muninn (Memory) and Huginn (Thought). Every day at dawn they would fly forth and gather news of any interesting events before reporting back to Odin. Odin was also the God of War. Apart from his horse, he carried a spear named Gungnir and a magic ring called Draupner. Odin wasn’t just a warrior god, however. He was learned, full of wisdom and possessed by great insight. Odin read - and wrote – poetry, practiced magic and even sacrificed the sight of an eye so that he could drink water from Mimir, the sacred fountain of wisdom. Odin probably had only one wife, Frigg, although debate rages amongst students of Norse history. Some say he had three wives, one of whom was Jord his daughter. Jord is said to be the mother of Thor, Odin’s eldest son. Wednesday, the fourth day of the week, is derived from Wotan’s Day. Wotan is the Germanic form of Odin.

Thor Thor was the most powerful of the Aesir, whom he helped protect from their

eternal foes the Jotuns or Giants. The Giants always knew when Thor was attacking them because his presence would be preceded by the terrible sound of thunder emanating from his chariot wheels. Thor’s weapon of choice was his magic hammer called Mjollnir, which was actually a powerful thunderbolt. If thrown at an enemy Mjollnir would return, like a boomerang, to Thor’s fist. Thursday, the fifth day of the week, is actually Thor’s Day and named after the god of thunder.

Loki Loki was one of the Jotuns or Giants. He was a son of the giant Farbauti and the giantess Laufi, but later became a god when Odin accepted him as a blood brother. Good-looking with a silver tongue, Loki could charm the birds out of the trees. Alas, he was also deceitful, malicious, cunning and conniving. In Norse mythology Loki represented evil. Loki was responsible, albeit indirectly, for the demise of Balder, god of joy and light. The Eddas, a collection of Scandinavian poetic myths, note that Loki and Hel, goddess of the underworld, will lead the forces of evil against the Aesir at Ragnarok, the end of the world.

Hel Hel is the goddess of the dead. Her home is beneath one of the three roots of Yggdrasil the World Tree. Hel is, perhaps fittingly, the daughter of the trickster deity Loki and the imposing giantess Angrboda. The gods kidnapped Hel and her brothers from Angrboda’s hall. Odin, the Father of the Gods, then banished Hel to Niflheim (or Helheim), the realm of the dead, ice and darkness. There she has total authority. Hel isn’t pretty. Her upper torso is basically human, although incredibly ugly, but her legs were usually described

22 Vision 12

as mouldy and in an advanced state of decomposition. She spends her days welcoming – and I use the term loosely – the evil and those who have died of sickness and old age to her domain before deciding exactly where in Helheim they will be housed. Hel has two servants, one male one female, who help her. The manservant is Ganglati and the maidservant Ganglott, both of which names translate as “lazy” or “feckless”.

Death and the Future Death, to the Vikings, was a great opportunity to prove your worth. Like the Klingons of Star Trek, the Vikings believed that one should face death bravely and with honour. Go to your death staring the Grim Reaper in the eye and Valhalla would be your reward. Contrary to popular opinion, the Norsemen didn’t always cremate their dead. Funeral rites varied from village to village. Whether buried or cremated, it was how you died that was important, not how your corpse was disposed of. Those who had died were buried or cremated with all the accoutrements they would need in the next world, including a decent set of clothes, shoes, bread, dried or pickled fish, beer (very important) jewellery (including a good quality cloak brooch if one could be afforded), weapons and even animals such as dogs and horses. Ragnarok is the Viking equivalent of the Apocalypse; the final battle between the forces of evil and the forces of righteousness. At Ragnarok the gods and the giants will engage in a huge battle in which Odin, Thor and other good deities will perish with a good number of their enemies. Essentially the two sides will fight each other to a

standstill and then the entire cosmos will be swallowed up in the conflagration. This might sound a tad depressing, but all is not lost. Out of the ashes will rise a new cosmos filled with peace and plenty. The good gods of the old world who did not survive will be resurrected and, it seems, good will prevail.

Dave Williams investigates a Norse myth of bravery and sacrifice

T

he Norse developed the art of story telling to entertain and instruct. When the day’s work was completed and darkness fell, the community would gather around the hearth fires to listen to the tales of the Gods; sometimes parts would be played in dramatic reconstructions. However, this was not just for entertainment. Each tale held important lessons that, once learned, would aid each person on their life’s journey. A good example of a traditional Norse tale is that of Fenrir, child of Loki, the Norse God of mischief. Loki had taken a mistress. She was a giantess known as Angrboda who, in due course, presented Loki with three offspring. The first of these was a giant wolf-like creature called Fenrir, followed by a giant snake known as Jormungand and, last of all, a monster daughter known as Hel. Odin and the rest of the Gods were worried by the birth of these creatures, for they realised that Loki would use them for evil, so Odin arranged that Loki’s children would be

24 Vision 12

captured and brought back to Asgård (the home of the Gods). A raiding party was formed and under the cover of darkness they entered the home of the Giantess. They soon found Loki’s children and, after making their mother a captive, they dragged the children of Loki back to face Odin and their fate. He decided that the snake would be flung into the sea, which surrounded the world. This was

only one that could handle him, feeding him mountains of meat each day. The other Gods gathered and warned Odin that if not controlled, the wolf would bring about the end of the Gods. Together they forged an iron chain called Laeding with which to bind him. Knowing the wolf’s arrogance they decided to trick him into being bound. Finding him eating his latest meal they teased him, asking him if he was as

Fenrir rose up upon his legs “ and the sun was blocked by his massive shadow.” done, but Jormungard survived. Living on the sea bottom he grew and grew until he encircled the whole world, finally swallowing his own tail. Odin picked up the snake’s sister Hel and threw her into the void between the worlds known as Niflhelm. He cursed her to look after all of those who died of natural causes for eternity. Before long she had made herself a kingdom and had furnished it. Her bed was called Sickness, her plates and cups were called Hunger and her room hangings were called Misfortune and Misery. As for the wolf Fenrir, Odin believed that he would cause no harm so he allowed him to roam around the fields surrounding Asgård. As the days passed, the Gods were alarmed by Fenrir’s increasing size. Tyr, Odin’s son, was the

strong as the chain. Fenrir raised his monstrous head and sneered. “Strong it may be, but I am stronger”. So the Gods bound him from head to tail. Fenrir snarled, shook his head and sent the iron links flying. Shaken, the Gods retreated. Within days they had forged a new chain, called Dromi. It was so large that it took a hundred men to carry it. “Are you as strong as this, Fenrir?”, they called. The wolf sniffed the chain, and laughed. “Try your luck!”, he said. So they bound him. However, the chain soon lay broken, shattered into a thousand pieces. Fenrir howled and threw his head high … all Asgård shook. The Gods were now really troubled for every day the Wolf became bigger and stronger. Odin shook his

head. “Can no one make a chain to bind this monster?” he asked. Just then his ravens Huginn and Munginn (Thought and Memory) flew into the hall. “Only the Dwarves,” they croaked. A messenger was sent to the Dwarves offering them all the gold in Asgård if they could make a chain to bind Fenrir. In the caves the Dwarves forged a magic chain as smooth and supple as the silk of a spider’s web and called it Gleipnir. It was crafted of six materials: the sound of a cat; the hair from a woman’s beard; the sinews of a bear; the roots from a mountain; the breath of a fish and the spit of a bird in flight. When it arrived in Asgård, Odin shook his head. “How can this

sniffed Gleipnir “And I smell magic in its strands!” “ If you cannot break it we will free you. If it breaks you are the strongest creature in the world” a God called out. Fenrir rose up upon his legs and the sun was blocked by his massive shadow. Tyr stepped forward. “Fenrir”, he called “ I will place my hand in your mouth as a token of trust.” The wolf dropped upon his four legs sending dust flying. “ Tyr, son of Odin. Place your hand into my mouth.” The wolf opened his mouth and Tyr placed his right hand in. The Gods instantly fell upon the wolf, binding him from head to tail. Try as he might he could not break the bonds of the magic chain.

The Gods were jubilant and congratulating themselves. “Release me, release me,” Fenrir groaned. “Bound you are and bound you stay,” they retorted. A cry shattered the rejoicing as Fenrir bit down, severing Tyr’s hand. As the God staggered away the remaining gods fell upon Fenrir and dragged him away. They fixed the silken chain to a larger chain, which they bound to a boulder. This they threw into the centre of the earth. As Fenrir fell, one of the Gods thrust a sword into the roof of the monster’s mouth. The Norse believed that Fenrir would remain deep beneath the Earth, bound and pinned. He lies there still ... awaiting the End of Days: known to the Norse as Ragnarok.

hold Fenrir?” he asked, casting his one eye around the surrounding Gods. “Dwarf magic” they replied. Odin shrugged and waved them away with his hand. They found Fenrir in his field. Surrounding him, they showed him the magic chain. “If you break this, you will be great indeed” they taunted. “I will gain nothing in breaking free from a flimsy thing,” he snarled. His large snout

Diana Jarvis visits ancient York and the Jorvik Viking Centre to find out what life was really like in the time of the Vikings

A

s a resident in the beautiful city of York, I am well aware of its ancient history: York has been a thriving town since 10th Century BC. As you would expect, York is full of tourist attractions, the difference with Jorvik is the wealth of archaeological finds that were found where the centre stands. I took a tour of the site, hoping to get as close to the real experience of everyday Viking life as it is possible to achieve. The whole of Jorvik centre is based on archaeological evidence gleaned during the Coppergate archaeological dig (1976 – 1981), so what you see is what you would probably have seen on 25th October AD975 at 5.30pm and in the very spot each exhibit stands on! Jorvik (the Viking name for York) was a thriving city. My little time bubble glided towards houses of wattle and daub that stretched out before me. Some were being mended and there was evidence of a change in building styles too. Apart from being pirates, Vikings

26 Vision 12

everything you see is backed “up…by archaeological evidence – even the poor man in the loo with stomach trouble!”

were also traders, both at home and abroad. In Viking Coppergate (Coppergate means “Cup-Makers Street” in Norse) there are many types of traders. You can see a comb maker, a bowl maker, fishmongers and leather traders, all shouting at you to buy their wares. Some of the traders are making the items that they are selling, you can see recreations of their techniques and talk to Viking staff that will let you have a go at some of them. Children are playing happily at an authentic Norse game, women weave, dinner is cooking … the atmosphere is such that you may believe you are there. Mainly because you can smell the Vikings too! Jorvik is fascinating, but goodness, Coppergate certainly smelt bad at 5.30pm on 25th! It’s great to imagine the trading, the game-playing, eating and drinking and realise that all this happened where you are seeing it.

However, it’s not quite so great experiencing a recreation of a Viking loo complete with resident, smell and sound!. Some of the archaeology is still in situ, particularly human remains and although that can seem a bit grisly – death is part and parcel of life. Vikings lived much as we do in many ways, and although they did go in for a bit of rape and pillage, they brought us their skills, culture and Mythology: without them we wouldn’t have a Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday or Friday (Tyr’s Day; Wotan’s Day; Thor’s Day and Frigg’s Day). On second thoughts, maybe a shorter working week wouldn’t be a bad thing …? For more details of Jorvik and visitors details, visit their website on www.vikingjorvik.com

Here are 6 things you probably don’t know about Vikings: 1. They travelled along eastern trade routes and colonised Ireland, Normandy, Iceland, Greenland and even reached Newfoundland, all without a cut-price airline. 2. Harald Bluetooth, Ivar the Boneless and Sihtric the Squinty are real Viking nicknames and are likely to become modern nicknames in the Vision office if I have my way. 3. They are known as ruthless warriors, but were no more ruthless than other peoples living at the time. 4. Viking became a personal name in the 10-11th century England. 5. Vikings take their name from the area known as Viki in Oslo Fjord, presumably an area renowned for pirate traders. 6. The last great ‘Viking’ king was Harald Hardraada of Norway, who was eventually killed when invading England. He died at Stamford Bridge, 8 miles from York, in 1066.

Dave Brennan

Michael Standing Wolf

Do you have a problem which you lack intuition to solve? Do you have any questions about the future to which you seek answers? Native American Michael Standing Wolf will use his Spirit Stones and psychic Dave Brennan will consult the Twist of Fate cards to offer a fresh view on matters.

Am I a Key? I attend an open circle and have been told that I am a key, a very old spirit who has come back to earth to help. I have also been told I will move away from Grimsby and become a spiritual teacher. Can you tell me if this is true? Dianne, Grimsby

Moving House? I visited a medium a while back and they told me that I won’t be living in my present house in the next 6 months. Could you shed some light on why this is? I would like to be able to prepare myself for it. Emma, Plymouth.

Michael Looking Coyote’s Spirit Stone Reading: The Thunderbird, the Horse. Most of us are probably ‘very old spirits’. Sometimes we are sent back to learn lessons, other times to help our descendants. The Thunderbird confirms a very important principle; we are all born with a large degree of free will and, as we ‘walk our walk’, even guiding spirits will not force us to do anything. Will you move away from Grimsby and become a spiritual teacher? The answer is, quite simply, yes, if you wish to. Horse certainly indicates that journeys lie ahead of you, both physical and spiritual. The Grandfathers will reveal opportunities for you to move and teach others, but only you will decide if you want to do this. If you do, remember the great responsibility you have taken and always be true to yourself. I wish you well.

Dave Brennan’s Twist of Fate Reading: Cards Chosen: 2 of Hearts; 9 of Hearts; Ace of Spades; Queen of Spades; 2 of Clubs; 7 of Clubs; 9 of Diamonds 7 of Hearts. Deciding on what an ‘old spirit’ is can be difficult, but from your cards I can see that you really want to get involved in this field and you are more than capable of doing so. I can clearly see satisfaction and fulfilment and I do believe that you have been ‘directed’. I can’t see you moving away in the short term, but I can see you moving onwards and upwards spiritually, so there is nothing in the reading to indicate that dreams of spiritual teaching could not come true!

Michael Standing Wolf’s Spirit Stone Reading: The Wolverine, the Owl. The fact that you want to be able to “prepare yourself” for the move indicates that you have already accepted that it is inevitable. But just think for a moment, Emma. Like every human being that walks the face of the earth you possess a degree of free will. If you want to move, then move. If you don’t - stay put. Wolverine urges you to take control and be master of your own destiny. The Owl indicates that there are changes ahead, but, as the Keeper of Secrets, it won’t allow you to see too much in advance. Whether you move or not is not the big issue. The important thing is that you don’t relinquish control of your life by believing that everything predicted for you will inevitably happen. Decide what you want to do with the rest of your life and then go for it! Dave Brennan’s Twist of Fate Reading: Cards Chosen: 2 of Clubs; Ace of Spades; Jack of Diamonds; 8 of Spades; 9 of Spades; Jack of Hearts; 9 of Clubs; 2 of Hearts, I can clearly see that changes are coming, especially in any enterprises. It is essential to plan carefully right now, any well-thought out plan will work providing you have learnt by your mistakes. An associate is likely to do you a very good turn, which may well be needed as money and finances are not excellent. However, what is clearly indicated is happiness coming to you in the not too distant future. Your question about moving house was not directly answered by the reading, it is likely that it is not time for you to know when or why a house move may come about.

Will I ever marry? My boyfriend and I have been together for 2 years and have a wonderful little boy. I am wondering if I will ever marry? I have asked my boyfriend if we will get married and he says that he is not ready yet. Will he ever change his mind? Catherine Ford, Chelmsford, Essex

Baby Heartache I had a baby in January 2005, but sadly she died when she was 19 days old. It took me a long time to conceive my daughter; I was trying for 5 years. I would love to be a mother again and to have more children. I have been trying for the past six months. Do you see me having more children or will I be childless forever? Amanda, address withheld.

Feeling Hollow I am at a stage in my life where I’m not sure what I need to do or where to go. I have been spiritual since the age of 12 and have come to a stage now where I need to be guided in a direction where I can work with spirit and understand my own destiny. I know in my heart I’m here to help people, I just don’t know where to begin. I’m in a very demanding job and my time gets consumed, my love life is a mess and I struggle to communicate with spirit. Sometimes I just feel so hollow that I’m ready to give up...please help.. “Pixi”, Reading.

Dave Brennan’s Twist of Fate Reading: Cards Chosen: 2 of Hearts; Queen of Spades; Ace of Spades; 7 of Spades; King of Clubs; Ace of Diamonds; 8 of Hearts; 7 of Hearts; 10 of Diamonds. I can see insecurity from a past relationship that has generated jealousy. This is overshadowing both your hopes for the future. Your partner’s indecision may make you feel negative – you shouldn’t worry, he does love you. A letter is bringing good news and good times are on their way. I can see marriage predestined, but I cannot be sure it is with this partner, I can’t be sure it isn’t either. You will marry and you will be happy, that much I can be sure of! There is also a long journey on the cards – maybe this is a honeymoon?

Michael Standing Wolf’s Spirit Stone Reading: The Barn Owl, the Buffalo. When two people make a home together and produce a family they are married. A ceremony, whether in church or in a registry office, is simply a public acknowledgement of an already existing relationship. Barn Owl seeks security, so it’s possible that your boyfriend’s reluctance to legally “tie the knot” may have made you a little insecure. Don’t be. Buffalo speaks of wholeness, completeness. When your boyfriend says he isn’t ready, maybe he feels that the relationship is perfect as it is. In the USA they have an old saying: If it ain’t broken, don’t fix it”. You have a good marriage, even if it’s a “common-law” one, and a piece of paper or a posh reception won’t make it any better. Savour the joy of having a loving partner and a beautiful child. Enjoy what you have and count your blessings!

Michael Standing Wolf’s Spirit Stone Reading: Message from the Grandfathers’. Firstly, may I say how sorry I am to hear of your loss, it must have been a devastating experience . The Grandfathers are not telling me whether you will have a child or not; a clear sign that you are not meant to know the answer, at least not yet. So, what should you do? Firstly, keep trying for a child, seek medical assistance if necessary. What if you don’t fall pregnant? Then you will have to adjust. This may not be easy, but it is possible. Is it a good thing to know our future? If you knew that you would have a child you may feel happier, but perhaps you would worry about whether the child would be disabled? If you knew that you wouldn’t have a child you may come to terms with the situation, but you would be robbed of a valuable lesson – how to cope with uncertainty. Gracefully accept that, whether or not you ever give birth, your future will inevitably work out as it should ... and it CAN be a happy one.

Dave Brennan’s Twist of Fate Reading: Cards Chosen: 2 of Diamonds; Knave of Diamonds; King of Spades; Queen of Spades; 10 of Spades; Knave of Hearts. I can see pain in both yourself and your husband, he is hiding much of his. I think you are trying to please everyone in dealing with this situation, take time out for yourself! The pressure from others if surprising, it seems to come from all directions. You are giving yourself a hard enough time for, don’t let others! There is a very positive card at the end of the reading, which does seem to indicate a child and a child born of love. Give yourself some time and space, the rest will follow! (Talisman Tip: Carry a moonstone and rose quartz stone with you, ensure you ask for a blessing from your deity/deities – both are said to help with conception. Ed)

Michael Standing Wolf’s Spirit Stone Reading: The Horse, the Salmon, Horse indicates that you are still on your path of spiritual discovery. It may have been a long (and sometimes arduous) journey, but that’s the nature of the beast, as they say. Spiritual journeys never end. Salmon indicates the completion of a search, suggesting that, although your spiritual quest is still ongoing, you will receive answers to the questions you seek. Start by doing nothing. Meditate, contemplate, relax. Divorce yourself from external spiritual activities for a while and let the Grandfathers dictate your next step. When you are ready to listen they will guide you in the right direction. Your love life? Keep things simple. Avoid eternal triangles and “which one do I choose?” situations. They are bad medicine. Overall, divest yourself of all unnecessary burdens and then quietly wait for spirit to speak to you. Kick the cares of the world into touch, Pixi, and embrace your future.

Dave Brennan’s Twist of Fate Reading: Cards Chosen: 2 of Hearts; Ace of Spades; 8 of Hearts; 8 of Diamonds; Queen of Clubs; King of Diamonds; King of Hearts. It is clear to me from your reading that your request for guidance will be fulfilled, not just from the Destiny Doctors, but also from Spirit! I have clear indication that you will be refreshed and fulfilled again and success is highlighted, helped by like-minded friends that you will soon find. Do not let past relationships cloud your judgement and let you see yourself as less than worthy of a happy and fulfilled life. There is an older man indicated that will bring happiness, love and prosperity to you. What a wonderful reading … enjoy!

Clint Denyer explores the spiritual aspects of coincidences at work in our lives

S

ynchronicities are people, places or events that your soul attracts into your life – to help you evolve or to place emphasis on something that is happening to you at the time. The more ‘consciously aware’ you become of how your soul creates, the higher your ‘frequency’ and the faster your soul manifests. Each day your life will become filled with meaningful coincidences – synchronicities that you have attracted or created in the grid of your experiences in the physical. Paying attention to the coincidences around you can be a rewarding experience. However, do be careful when you examine them, as not all synchronicities are positive. Sometimes coincidences lead to learning lessons - when you are deceived into thinking that you are being led to take a particular path at a given moment in time. Synchronicities can also go nowhere as they just occur to make a point. Always look at the bigger picture when you experience synchronicity - not the actual event. Look at the underlying facts when the synchronicity occurs to be sure you know why you attracted that person/ situation into your life. Here is a good example and one we’ve probably all experienced: you meet someone who interests you and touches your soul. Through synchronicity that person seems to come into your life over and over again. You begin to feel a destiny with that person. You begin to think with your heart instead of your head. You connect with that person. In some cases the karma between the two people is positive - but in many cases you have attracted that person into your life for a learning lesson whether you are aware of it or not, so whatever the outcome, don’t lose the lesson!

30 Vision 12

If you can see this in past relationships that went wrong, you can also see the lesson if you look hard enough. You can consider an event synchronistic when an inner experience such as a dream, vision, or other form of deja vu prepares you for the physical event. Let’s look at synchronicity examples in more detail. There are always times in our lives when financial difficulties seem to have no end. However, there is still enough money for basic expenses...rent, food, utilities. Finances seem to appear where and when they are needed. Perhaps you have just received your last unemployment payment when suddenly a job comes along. You may walk into a book store not knowing what to buy, and the book you need falls from a shelf and practically hits you over the

something that brings you the guidance you need. Everyone’s favourite.....you drive to a place where parking is “next to impossible” and someone pulls out of a parking spot or it is just waiting for you. These are just a few examples of the strange world of synchronicity. Things and events that happen in our everyday lives are full of timely coincidences that we take no notice of. How often do we take these events for granted, instead of stopping to look at them in a more detailed way? If we did, maybe the understanding of what we do not understand would become clearer to us. Synchronicity is not a new phenomenon but one that many of the great visionaries and prophets of past years have utilised and used in the understanding of our futures. We can see synchronicity appear in the writings of

Synchronicity may seem quite a “compelling subject to have an

understanding of, but one thing is for sure: synchronicity, fate and coincidences do not just happen to us for any reason. They happen because they need to happen and there is purpose behind it all

head. Maybe you have been feeling ill with no apparent cure, then, when you are out for the day you meet someone who knows a doctor or healer with the answers. You finally end a bad relationship and immediately another partner comes into your life. You feel depressed and can’t find focus in your life and the next person you talk you says

Carl Jung. His concept of synchronicity is the belief in the ultimate “oneness” of the universe. As Jung expressed it, such phenomena betray a “peculiar interdependence of objective elements among themselves as well as with the subjective (psychic) states of the observer or observers.” Jung claimed to have found evidence of this interdependence,

not only in his psychiatric studies, but in his research of esoteric practices as well. It is the gateway or vortex to newer depths of understanding of the multidimensional and metaphysical. . Synchronicity may seem quite a compelling subject to have an understanding of, but one thing is for sure: synchronicity, fate and coincidences do not just happen to us for any reason. They happen because they need to happen and there is purpose behind it all. We are being given the opportunity to open the spiritual side of ourselves to the unknown and accept and learn from the experience. The next time you go experience synchronicity (and you will!) take a few minutes during and after the event to understand more of what has just happened. These are special instances of universal learning … remember there is a reason and purpose behind these events!

Both were succeeded by Southerners. Both successors were named Johnson. Andrew Johnson, who succeeded Lincoln, was born in 1808.

Booth and Oswald were assassinated before their trials. The next time you go through an instance of synchronicity or fate take a few minutes during and after the event to understand more of what has just happened for these are special instances of universal learning and remember there is, above all, a reason and purpose it is happening to you.

..take a few minutes during and after the “event to understand more of what has just happened for these are special instances of universal learning and remember there is, above all, a reason and purpose it is happening to you.

Here is an interesting take on the synchronicities or coincidental events that happen 100 years apart: Abraham Lincoln was elected to Congress in 1846. John F. Kennedy was elected to Congress in 1946. Abraham Lincoln was elected President in 1860. John F. Kennedy was elected President in 1960. The names Lincoln and Kennedy each contain seven letters. Both were particularly concerned with civil rights. Both wives lost their children while living in the White House. Both Presidents were shot on a Friday. Both were shot in the head. Lincoln’s secretary was named Kennedy. Kennedy’s secretary was named Lincoln. Both were assassinated by Southerners.

Lyndon Johnson, who succeeded Kennedy, was born in 1908. John Wilkes Booth, who assassinated Lincoln, was born in 1839. Lee Harvey Oswald, who assassinated Kennedy, was born in 1939. Both assassins were known by their three names. Both names are made of fifteen letters. Booth ran from the theatre and was caught in a warehouse. Oswald ran from a warehouse and was caught in a theatre.

What Is Remote Viewing?

Steve Bryan gives us a brief introduction to Remote Viewing.

I

n the prow of a canoe filled with people, a woman stands, eyes shut. Behind her, a dozen brawny men sit patiently at their oars waiting. There is no land to be seen. They are starving. Dark clouds behind them warn of a coming storm. Then, with a gesture born of certainty, the woman indicates a point on the watery horizon, looking no different from the rest. The oarsmen immediately spring into action, guiding the boat towards the spot she has chosen, for they know that she has found land and safety for the people. She has used Remote Viewing to find their new home. This scene could have come from any part of history. Our ancestors spread across the globe using Remote Viewing, crossing mountain ranges, deserts, swamps and jungles, as well as wide seas. This was how Australia was discovered and how the Americas were

32 Vision 12

Be specific. Attempting to remotely view ‘Canada’ is unlikely to produce results; a particular street in Ontario is much better. The more precise you are, the better.

Remote viewing is a particular psychic skill where the practitioner mentally scans a distant place, and is able to find out things about it. They do not have to have been to the place; they do not have to have a psychic link to a person already there. It is simply the ability to see things beyond the horizons of our ordinary senses. Who has this skill? We all do! Research indicates that everyone has the ability to remote view. This innate ability can be enhanced by practice and training, but it is there in all of us.

Pick your time.

How Is It Done?

As with other forms of psychic exercise, remote viewing works best if you are not distracted. That means both outside distractions, like the children shouting, and internal ones, like worries and anxieties. Think about the target, and allow impressions to come to you. Do not force yourself to ‘see’. Impressions are most likely to be ‘sensory’ in nature, the colours, smells and sounds of a place come through more strongly than things like function. You are more likely to see the colour of the building than know exactly what it is used for. Just relax, repeat your target

Here is a quick guide that you may wish to try.

Identify a good target. Having a target is critical, and terming it as such and treating it as such is important. Some people use coordinates – 55 degrees North, and 34 West for example; others find intuitive targeting more useful, such as the foot of Nelson’s Column. A target suggested by someone else is better than choosing your own, simply to make sure you don’t already know what’s there!

Remote Viewing can see the past and future as well as the present. Make sure you are clear about whether you want to know what is there now, what was there before, or what might be there in the future.

Have some way of checking your results. Seeing a wedding in Auckland is fine, but if you have no way of checking whether it actually happened, not terribly fulfilling.

Relax

and allow images to form in your mind’s eye. The more relaxed you are, the better.

Be aware that your imagination will attempt to fill in any gaps. You may get a vivid image of green. Your imagination may make you assume it is grass, when perhaps it is the colour of someone’s coat.

Recording Make some sort of record of what images and impressions you receive. These can be drawings or words, which you can write down on paper, or you might simply record words onto tape. Don’t worry if the images are incoherent or jumbled. They may well start to make sense when you verify your viewing session.

Verification Now start to verify what you have seen. Distant friends and relatives may be able to help. You can also use news reports

from around the world to see if there is any correlation between real events and what you were able to view. If you have tried to view the past, historical records may be of use as well. Now analyse your viewing record against what other information you have. Are some of the impressions you received more understandable now? Do they match events? You should not despair if they don’t; remote viewing is like playing

How Does It Work?

the piano, the more you do it, the better you get. But, with luck, even on your first attempt, you should be able to find some points where you were able to spot things you can verify were actually there. Now consider how you might have interpreted the impressions more clearly. Did you assume that the water you saw was a river, when it was in fact, rain? Did you assume that strangers were people you knew, because of physical similarities, when they were strangers? Above all else, learn from your failures as well as your successes, because that is the best way to improve.

Modern physics gives some tantalising glimpses into the possible forces at play. Quantum mechanics indicates connections between all matter at a subatomic level, while relativity shows that time, like other dimensions, can in principle be transcended. Many claim that remote viewing is a way of tapping into the ‘Universal Mind’. Perhaps physics is on the point of identifying some of the features that go to make up that ‘Mind’, and with that, the basis for Remote Viewing and other phenomena. We shall have to wait and see, it is definitely a subject worth exploration.

The simple answer is that no one knows. It does not seem to be any form of astral projection; remote viewers remain conscious at all times, and rarely report any sense of actually ‘being’ at their target location. What happens instead is that information about the target is accessed from somewhere, and interpreted by the mind, much as we use sight and sound.

we can rediscover this ancient skill, “Ifand utilise it to the full, all sorts of

things may become possible; interstellar contact, time travel and communion with the goddesses and gods

What Use Is It? The upsurge of interest in Remote Viewing in the last thirty years came initially from a perhaps unsavoury source. During the Cold War both the US and USSR set up research programmes to evaluate its potential for spying. Maybe, they thought, they could find out details of each other’s military installations without ever having to try to infiltrate them. The US programme was called Star Gate, and ran in various guises from 1972 to 1995. It managed to achieve a 15% success rate, which is statistically significant. Many of its former participants now offer a range of services and courses in remote viewing as well as appearing on lecture tours and television. Remote Viewing has also been used to help solve crime. Kidnap and murder victims have been located with the help of practitioners. On a more personal level, people use Remote Viewing to assure themselves of the safety of loved ones. Picking up images of someone away from home can be comforting to those left behind. More dubious from a moral standpoint is an extension of Remote Viewing called

34 Vision 12

Remote Influencing. This seeks not only to ‘see’ a distant person, but also to influence their actions. While there may be occasions where this is appropriate, it seems to me that there are all sorts of potential for misuse, however well intentioned. Free will is important, and I am sure whatever lies behind this hidden skill would not want the skilled and practiced to curtail the free will of others. Remote Viewing has also been used for Space Travel. Remote Viewing may offer hope for those of the Star Trek generation frustrated by the limitations on speed and distance current craft can achieve. Viewers have been able to describe features of planets in the Solar System, which have been later verified by satellite photographs. Others have been able to venture further into the Galaxy, contacting other civilisations and cultures that share the Universe with us.

Learning More The Web is an excellent resource for finding out more about Remote Viewing and its potential uses. The US Star Gate project and its evaluation are particularly well documented. There are also a number of Institutes and Societies

dedicated to the furtherance of Remote Viewing with informative websites. Simply type “Remote Viewing” into your search engine and surf! Unfortunately, as in so many fields, there are also more dubious organisations offering courses and seminars at extortionate prices. It is true that your viewing skills can improve with practice; it is also true that learning in a group can be better than learning alone. But remember that some people will jump on any bandwagon to make money. Exercise extreme caution before parting with money and time, and, where possible, try and get independent testimonies of any course you may be tempted by, before reaching for your chequebook.

What Of The Future? Who knows? If we can rediscover this ancient skill, and utilise it to the full, all sorts of things may become possible; interstellar contact, time travel and communion with the goddesses and gods. We may be within sight of a new horizon, like the woman in the prow of the boat, with Remote Viewing as our guide to take us to new and exciting places that will spiritually enrich us all.

Diana Jarvis looks at the ancient art of Tasseomancy and tells you how to read tea leaves at home.

A

s a small child, I remember my family talking about some relatives who could tell everything about you by looking into your cup after you’d had some tea. Part of me was scared that they might visit and tell my parents my innermost secrets … but another part of me was fascinated. As an adult now fully aware of my ancestry, I know that tea-leaf reading is one of many fortune-telling methods that gypsies find as natural as breathing. I’m just glad that those relatives never did visit; tasseomancy (the proper name for tea-leaf reading) can be surprisingly accurate! The art is said to date as far back as the ancient Greeks, where wine sediment was “read” after being tossed into a bowl. It is another form of scrying - seeing pictures in natural objects and interpreting them to tell the future. If you’d like to give this ancient art a try, you’ll need some tea! Don’t be tempted to use tea bags cut open, the leaves are simply not clear enough and there is too much dust. You can use coffee grounds though, so you don’t have to force yourself to drink tea if you don’t like it. You will also need a cup. The best type is china, bowl-shaped and with an accompanying saucer, you can’t read tea-leaves properly without it. You can also use one purpose made for the task. Whatever you do, don’t use one with a complicated pattern, it will make reading harder. Now make your tea. It is a good idea to use a pot, you can use the time taken to concentrate on your questions and clear your mind. The tea should be poured without a strainer, this may seem obvious but I do know that people have tried to read leaves when they are not there! Pour your tea and sip it slowly, concentrating on your questions and the

36 Vision 12

future. Try to be detached when you do so, allow the future to reveal itself in the cup, not your head. When you’ve drunk the tea (be careful of the leaves at the bottom) take your cup and turn it round three times, anti-clockwise, counting the moves as you go. Then turn the cup upside-down onto the saucer and allow it to drain. You can now look at the leaves. Each part of the cup means something in

itself. Start by reading from the handle (which represents you) and work round in a clockwise direction. The top of the cup represents the immediate future, the middle is up to a week ahead and the bottom can be anything up to a couple of months ahead. Seeing the symbols is an art. It is important to be relaxed and not try to make them appear, the more relaxed you are the more success you will have.

art is said to date as “The far back as the ancient

Greeks, where wine sediment was “read” after being tossed into a bowl.”

The Symbols Obviously I don’t have the space here to put in all the symbols that you may see, but I have listed some of the commoner ones. If you think you see an angel, but it doesn’t look like the one below, don’t worry – if you think it’s an angel … it’s an angel! The most important thing about any type of divination is to allow images to come to you through your own intuition. A book is a guide only. However, if you want a good guide, the book that accompanies the Cup of Destiny (picture on this page and our competition on P46) fits the bill quite nicely!

Cross

Arch

Angel

If it resembles a crucifix it suggests success from your efforts. A cross that looks more like a kiss is a warning. Look at the symbols near it to determine where the threat is coming from.

An archway is an opportunity, often involving money or travel. Look at the symbols around to learn more about where it may be coming from.

This symbol is extremely lucky and means guidance, inspiration and may also foretell of some good news coming your way. Having an angel in your cup lessens the effect of any negative symbols.

Arrow

Knife

Are you about to make a decision? If so, the direction of this arrow will help you to determine what to do. An upright arrow is a clear indication to go ahead; a horizontal arrow means that there will be no significant change; and arrow pointing to the bottom of the cup suggests a radical rethink!

This symbol warns against speaking before thinking, sharp words now may cause much trouble in the future. Look at the symbols around to determine whether the words come from you or are directed at you.

Not a particularly lucky symbol, a fence portrays hurdles and obstacles that are in your path. You may also feel trapped and claustrophobic in your life at the moment.

Lightning

Eye

This predicts an exciting yet unsettling time. It can also point to a major event coming from out of the blue – such as falling in love. Life will not be boring if you see lightning!

The eye has been a symbol of protection since ancient Egyptian times. This is an extremely lucky symbol and may also foretell increased spiritual ability.

There are a million and one symbols that you may see. To interpret them successfully, it is important to say what comes into your head as soon as you see the symbol. Don’t try to rationalize, just say what comes to you. With practice, you will be able to develop and learn about how this system works. A bit of application and a lot of tea and you will find that friends will drop round for a cuppa more often!

Ancient Norse Havamal (Modern Translation)

T

he Runes have been with us for centuries. Submerged in the western world and sometimes hidden from sight, they have survived. The Runes first appeared in Northern Europe in the form of twenty-four symbols. Each symbol is equivalent to a character in our Roman based alphabet, but they are also charged with a inherent energy of their own. This energy contained within them

does mean that it is unwise to use the Runes without respect. The Futhark The complete collection of runes is called the Futhark Futhark refers to the first letters of the first five runes. FEOH The first Rune, Feoh, is associated with cattle. In modern terms it represents material possessions and wealth on the physical. To the Norse cattle were wealth. The rune itself refers to belongings rather than an actual property

URUZ This rune is represented by a large wild Ox, which is now extinct. The rune itself symbolises physical strength, willpower and the Magical power of the universe contained within the Wyrd, which is the web of life

THORN The third rune, Thorn, symbolises elemental forces. The Norse saw these as giants, who were the traditional enemies of the Gods and controlled famine, earthquakes, and floods. The rune can also represent sudden unexpected events and pain.

ANSUR The next rune is Ansur and represents the God Odin. As such it symbolises wisdom, knowledge and communication. As the runes came to Odin through sacrifice it also represents acceptance and the willingness to learn through suffering.

RAIDO Raido is represented by a wheel and symbolises movement and travel. It is also symbolic of the mythical Sun cart that the Norse believed carried the Sun across the heavens each day. In modern terms it can represent inner and outer journeys.

CEN Cen is represented by a torch or flame. It represents the spark of enlightenment, and the energy to create. Earlier translations also mention a more negative meaning. In early Norse prose the Cen rune represented distress, and illness as a physical or mental affliction.

GYFU Gyfu is a rune we are all familiar with as we use it in modern times as a kiss. To the Norse it represented a gift, the act of giving as from one to another, and also the ritual of sacrifice giving a gift to the Gods to obtain favour. A kiss is a gift of love.

WUNJO Wunjo is joy, happiness, and contentment. It also has an inner meaning representing the inner happiness brought about by becoming one with oneself.

HAEGAL The Haegal rune is represented by hail. Weather conditions were very important to the Norse people. To such a seafaring nation, adverse weather could make their voyages more dangerous, to the farming community at home it was a constant threat to the crops and the future harvest. This rune represents those dangers. NYD The tenth Rune is Nyd, this literally symbolises need, restraint and wanting. The rune is also a protection rune and as such can represent the need for temperance and caution.

ISA Isa symbolises Ice. To stand still, cease, and stop. This can be one’s own decision, or outside forces causing you to halt. Remember that to our Viking ancestors ice would have caused havoc to any sea voyage. JARA The next Rune is Jara. The original meaning of the rune was Year, or passing time. In later times it became a symbol to represent Harvest. As the year was often represented by the symbol of a wheel this rune can also represent movement of time. EOH Eoh is the yew tree. This rune can show both strength and death. As the yew never seems to die during the winter months, both this rune and the yew are connected with eternal life.

39 Vision 12

PEORTH Peorth is the unknown or hidden and has occult connections. It also represents games of chance and luck. On it side it resembles a container not unlike a dice cup.

TYR Tyr is a represents the God Tyr and symbolises male energy. Because it is a physical rune it represents actions. As such it also has strong sexual connections.

MANNAZ Mannaz symbolises Man or the self. Kinship and family are represented, but also friends and acquaintances.

EOLH Eolh is also known as the witch’s foot. It is the ancient Elk, a creature of great strength. As such it is a rune of protection, reward through effort and defence. If you reverse this rune and place it in a circle you have the symbol for CND.

BERKANA Berkana is represented by the Birch tree. It is closely connected with healing, the feminine and is sacred to the Goddess Freya. It was closely connected with conception, new life, and childbirth. It can represent new ventures, relationships and business.

LAGU Lagu is a leek or reed. It is a rune of water and healing. It can also refer to female sexuality. Lagu is a healing rune on all levels. It can sometimes link to your intuition and connect with travel over water.

SOWELU The next rune has sinister connections with European history: it was the German SS collar flash. Sowelu represents power through strength. The rune itself is not negative as it represents lifeforce and wholeness.

EIHAZ Eihaz is the rune of the Horse and represents travel in all forms physically, spiritually or as movement in one’s own life. It can also mean messages from afar coming to you.

ING Ing is another God Rune and is connected strongly with Frey who rules over the home and procreation. It is a protective Rune and was used within the Home to symbolise completion and peace.

WYRD If you use the Runes for divination you need to include a twenty-fifth rune known as Wyrd. This rune is blank and symbolises Fate or the unknown.

ODAL Odal is the rune of property and inheritance it has strong connections with domestic issues. It can work in a similar way to the influence of Saturn in Astrology and is a powerful material rune.

DAEG Daeg represents light. This can be the light of a new day, or the realisation of hope after a dark period in ones life. It is a rune of both positive and negative energy as without darkness light cannot be.

40 Vision 12

Here is a sample cast to give you an idea of how to read the runes. Joyce is in her late twenties, holding an important position in an advertising company in London. She had reached a dead end and felt that she was now merely treading water in her life. Her personal life had undergone a dramatic change when her long-term relationship of six years had broken up and now she felt that she had no direction. I placed the twenty-five runes face down in a large circular pattern. I asked her to choose nine of these runes randomly. Holding them in her cupped hands I asked her to think about her situation as I invoked Odin. I guided Joyce to move her hands three times above the circle upon the floor. I then asked her to release the runes in her hand. All face down runes

were removed, leaving four runes to read from the outside in. Firstly HAEGAL upright, followed by ISA (same either way up), SOWELU (same either way up), and then TYR upright. Haegal represents the circumstances that surround Joyce at the moment. Her personal life has been disrupted by the break up of her relationship, but Haegel suggests that the relationship had run its natural course and neither she nor her partner could be blamed. Isa speaks to reassure Joyce that this difficult time would soon end and she would soon feel in control of her life. Sowelu gives her new energy and highlights her ability to forge new links, which will make her successful. Tyr speaks of spending less time thinking about the past. The energy here can be harnessed to allow Joyce to achieve change and press forward with her life.

CASTING THE RUNES The runes, unlike the Tarot, are more likely to read you than you them. As such they should be treated with respect and reverence. You will need a place to read them, a table top will do as long as it is free from clutter. I find that the Runes seem to work better for me if I read them on the floor close to the earth. You will need to mark your area with a circle, you can do this in any way that suits. To start, take up your runes and hold them in both hands. I always recite a dedication to Odin to ensure clarity and truth. Then the runes are placed face down in the circle. From this circle nine runes should be chosen. Hold the runes in both hands and think of what you are asking. Questions resulting in yes and no answers should be avoided. Then, while holding the runes in both hands, move the runes around the circle three times. One for the past, one for the present and one for the future.

Now hold your hands over the centre of the circle and release the runes so that they fall into the centre of the circle. The runes should be read from the centre to the outside edge. Any runes that fall face down should be removed. Check that none of them are the Wyrd rune, wherever this falls it should be left in place. Now look at the runes and allow the runes to whisper their meanings to you. Be patient, for it will take time to learn, but the more you cast them the more you will understand.

Rosalind Collier navigates the omens and portents followed by the superstitious sailor

F

or over a millennium man has sought food and livelihood from the oceans of the world. In times gone by, sailing the open seas was fraught with danger and believed to hold many mysteries and monsters. As a result of this belief, superstitious practices were, and are, rife amongst seafaring communities. Because of the nature of the fisherman’s life, it is often difficult to trace the origins of the superstitions and customs surrounding the sea. Most of their beliefs are firmly linked to preserving the welfare of their crew and ensuring safe journeys and a bountiful haul. Seafarers view the oceans of the world with fearful respect, and it is often the custom of fishermen to place a coin into one of the floats of their nets in an attempt to ensure a good session. This custom stems from belief in the sea god

Neptune and his need for payment before he releases the ocean’s bounty. As with many superstitions, animals play a key role in determining the fortunes of sailors. Cats, and in particular black cats, are considered the luckiest animal to have on a ship, while animals such as pigs, horses and dogs are considered extremely unlucky … to such an extent that sometimes their names are not even allowed to be mentioned onboard. The behaviour of rats on a ship is seen as a pre-warning to any oceanic voyage, if rats are seen leaving a vessel it is believed that the vessel is doomed; however, if they are seen boarding a vessel that it is a sign of luck. It is not just the animals of the sea that offer good or bad luck; seaweed is reputed to have supernatural properties including the ability to predict the weather. According to tradition a piece of seaweed kept near the front door will shrivel up when warm weather is expected or become moist

bad weather, as illustrated by this Scottish rhyme. ‘Seagull, seagull, sit on the sand, It’s never good weather when you’re on the land’

In July 1959 the Calpean Star, a cargo vessel, docked at Liverpool with engine trouble. It had traveled from the Antarctic and had suffered a series of misfortunes. The talk amongst the crew was that it was all the fault of an albatross on board that was scheduled to be transferred to a zoo. The crew were so concerned that they actually staged a

when showers are on the way. Seagulls and the albatross are also generally regarded as unlucky. Both seagull and albatross are widely associated with death among coastal communities, and superstitions dictate that a seagull or albatross is the reincarnation of a dead fisherman or sailor, usually one that has drowned. The seagull’s behaviour is also thought to carry omens as it is said that when seagulls are seen far inland it is a sign of

strike, being unwilling to continue the voyage. The Daily Telegraph quoted the captain as saying that it had taken all his courage to bring the bird on board in the first place! The ship returned to Antarctica that year and suffered engine failure. It then smashed its rudder on the rocks at South Georgia. It was towed to Montevideo for repairs. After the repairs it went on its way again … only to sink in the River Platte!

Intuitive astrologer, psychic and dream interpreter Samantha Hamilton continues Vision’s monthly alphabet round-up of the most common dream scenarios.

Common dreams beginning with the letter Moon The meaning of the moon in a dream depends on the details, but in general it’s favourable. To see the moon shining over your left shoulder is very lucky indeed: the month ahead sees your deepest wish being realised. A bright waxing moon indicates new projects; a dark and cloudy sky foretells trouble in new beginnings. Drifting clouds over a full moon predicts obstacles will be difficult to move from your path. Magic To dream of any form of magic predicts transformation and unexpected changes for the better. You can expect a reunion with friends that you have not seen for some time. If you were being mystified or influenced by a magician this also foretells a great love affair is entering your life. Maid This dream has many meanings; if you were the maid this is a strong warning against overspending and indulging in luxury items. To dream of having your own maid is very lucky indeed, there will be an increase in happiness and in monetary gain. Map If you see a map in a dream and the map was easy to follow, expect your destiny to be smooth and your influence on others to be empowering. You can also influence those you meet for the

first time and help to change any difficulties in their path. A map can also signify journeys and changes, the bigger the map in your dream – the longer the trip and significant change. Market The information from this dream depends on its details. A busy, active market forecasts splendour, opulence and abundance: you can feel satisfied that you will reap the rewards of your labour. However, if the food and stock in the market was low and of poor quality, this is a warning of losing out on new opportunities. There will be hard times ahead if you take things for granted. Mars When dreaming of this plant you can be sure there will be strife, arguments and battles ahead of you, and that you will need your wits, good instincts and valour. Whatever adversity you find yourself in, keep a cool head, as you will need to know how to handle difficulties and challenges. Mask A mask foretells deception and indicates that you are focussing too much on fears and uncertainties. If you were wearing the mask it is time for you to show the world who you really are, and try not to hide yourself away. If someone else was wearing the mask this represents hidden enemies, danger or error.

‘M’ Foolish behaviour could lead to hurt and regrets. Meat This predicts good fortune in business affairs and unexpected luck. It also indicates that the changes that you make now towards your financial affairs will pay off. You can expect a windfall when taking a risk on the lottery or any other form of gambling. To cook meat predicts a better lifestyle. If you burn the meat then expect the opposite. If the meat was off, someone close to you is being deceitful. Merry-go-round To dream of being on a merry-goround foretells a period of success and goals realised, activity with children, possibly even a birth in the family. If you were watching others on a merry-go-round, this is a period of suspended activity before success. To be on it alone indicates disorder, despair and confusion in your aims in life. Mortgage If you paid off the mortgage this indicates upliftment in your finances. If you were dreaming of starting a new mortgage this is telling you not to miss out and to go for your new ideas by putting them into action. If you dreamed of someone else paying off your mortgage, expect great financial opportunities and partnerships to go well.

Michael takes up the story:

Diana Jarvis talks to Michael Hallowell about his amazing near death experience

M

ichael Hallowell is known to Vision readers as Michael Looking Coyote – an incredibly skilled writer and a kind and caring man. He has co-hosted the column Destiny Doctors since Vision’s inception and he remains dedicated to it, as well as his own work helping and healing others. Spending time with Michael is a pleasurable, uplifting and humorous experience – he is someone that makes you feel better just by being in his company. So you can imagine how shocked we were here at Vision when we were told that Michael had collapsed and was in hospital with a serious heart condition. Our prayers went out to him ... and they were answered! Michael is fit and well and writing for the magazine again as Michael Standing Wolf (not that he ever stopped, we heard about him finishing off Destiny Doctors letters from his hospital bed!) Michael recalls the events that led up to that fateful day: “In August (2005) I suddenly started to suffer from a strange fluttering sensation at the bottom of my breastbone. These feelings increased in their frequency so I went to see my doctor. I was told that it was probably stress, but to come back in a week if the symptoms persisted in case it was anything more serious. The symptoms faded and against Jackie’s (his wife’s) advice I didn’t go back.” On Saturday 3rd December the fluttering came back with a vengeance and he felt dizzy. Mike called the NHS Helpline who told him to go straight to Accident and Emergency at his local hospital. The hospital wired him up to

44 Vision 12

“The next thing I remember is that my vision returned. When I opened my eyes I was on my back looking at the most beautiful clear blue sky, flecked with a few snowflakes. My first thought, not surprisingly, was “what am I doing outside?” As I took in more of my surroundings I could see that I was on a large green, grassy hilltop, the land sloping away gradually in front of me. In the distance I could see some pine or fir trees. I was wrapped in a chestnut-coloured bearskin. At this point I should mention that physically I felt fantastic. You know when you first get into bed and reach that temperature that is just perfect and you are all snuggled up and warm? That’s how I felt: perfectly warm, perfectly safe … just perfect.

There were small pieces of wood sticking out from under me where I lay – as if some kind of platform or stretcher had been made of slats of wood and I’d been placed on it. It was then I saw the people. Next to my right shoulder was a man, I would guess he was around 45, with thick, black hair and a chocolatebrown bearskin around him, he looked as if he was of Native American descent. Next to him was a young woman wearing hide, beads and feathers, she was in her mid-20s and had blonde hair and white skin; quite Nordic looking. I remember thinking it odd that she was white as she was dressed in a

beaded deerskin tunic that looked very Native American. Next to her, looking at my feet, was an older Native American woman. Her hair was almost grey and she had earrings in. She was quite small and quite plump: a “grandma” figure. She had something in her hands, but I could not see what it was; a bag or a bundle of some sort. The three of them were just staring intently at me. The man turned to the two women and spoke to them in a language that I did not understand. Oddly, the meaning of the

words was clear to me: he was saying “Well, what do you think?”. I found that odd, I thought it was a very modern thing to say and I had come to the conclusion that these people were from aeons ago. The women opened their mouths to answer the man – at this point my vision went dark again and I wondered where I was going now. The next thing I saw was three nurses looking down at me. I was back in the hospital and the nurses were saying “Come on, speak to us, speak to us”. I said “Oh sorry, I must have fainted” and the nurses just mumbled something about my heart slowing down. I saw that Jackie and Martyn (Michael’s wife and son) were in the room and I did wonder why they looked ashen and why they were there when all I’d done was faint.” Michael hadn’t just fainted. In fact, his heart had stopped beating when he collapsed and it took all the skills of the nurses and doctors and a cardiac massage to revive him again. Michael had died. He was diagnosed as having a faulty AV node in his heart, which meant that it “misfired” and

would sometimes stop beating properly. Michael has had a pacemaker fitted to correct the problem and is recovering well. “Without the skill and quick reactions of the staff at the Coronary Heart Unit at South Tyneside District General Hospital I’d be dead for good,” said Michael. “I can’t thank them enough. They have a great sense of humour and were always laughing. They saved my life and made my time in hospital as pleasant as it could be. I am glad I had the experience I did and would not want to change what happened. I think that the people I saw were distant ancestors of mine and I also wondered whether they were trying to decide if I should stay or go back. I had a short glimpse of the Happy Hunting Ground (Native American afterlife) and that was something special. I have no fear of dying now and complete belief that something comes after.”

Addendum Michael has been in communication with one of our readers who wrote to him through Destiny Doctors. Nina Turner became good friends with Michael and was kind enough to produce a beautiful painting of a wolf for him (see above) that she felt in some way was reprentative of him as a person. Michael’s experience has prompted his tribe elders to give him a new medicine name… Standing Wolf! Michael commented: “Nina and I have been in constant correspondence since she first wrote to Vision. She felt that Spirit wanted her to give me the painting and when I opened up the package it had a very profound effect on me. It was as if my new medicine name was being validated in some way.”

Carol Stirling introduces us to the art of ribbon reading

N

o-one knows for sure who introduced ribbons as a tool for divination, but it is thought to have come from travelling folk. Travellers would sell their ribbons to make a living and as they sold them they gave a reading from the selected choices. The art is now well established, but not well-known. Many ladies approached by travellers would want a new ribbon, but were also keen to buy a reading too. Some believe it was the Celts who first started the ribbon reading as they were known for travelling. There are as many stories about the ribbons as there are methods to read them. I have put together what I consider the simplest way for a beginner to learn in the hope that you can gather your ribbons and start to read with them straight away! I was given my ribbons and taught in the same way as I am showing you. You will need to gather a good selection of ribbons in varied shapes, colours and lengths before you start trying to read. As you develop the meanings for each colour of ribbon you will also find your natural clairvoyant skills will develop alongside. Be open to what your intuition is saying, the more practice you have, the better relationship you will have with your own clairvoyance. Before you start a reading, bear in mind that it is important that the person having the reading should not choose the colours with their eyes are open. Most people will choose colours that they like; this doesn’t produce a really accurate reading. Have your ‘client’ close their eyes so that any conscious thoughts of choosing colours are removed, the subconscious mind is then allowed to come to the fore. The colours chosen this way will be the colours reflected within their aura as well as the more hidden emotional issues, giving you an unbias reading.

46 Vision 12

The ribbons chosen should be looked at carefully. I have a wide selection of colours with various widths and lengths. The length of the ribbons should be considered in the reading, also any fraying in the ends of the material. All of these can be interpreted; as can the opaqueness of the material chosen. Colour interpretation is individual to the person doing the reading, but to get you started I have listed some meanings to help with interpretations of colour. Please remember that this is just meant to be a guide, you will gather your own interpretations which will be right for you and for your clients. Have the person receiving the reading close their eyes, pass them the ribbons (my own ribbons are kept in a pouch or box) allow them to feel the textures of the materials and then have

them choose three or four colours. Get your client to hand the ribbons to you; pay attention to any colours which are presented together as in a pair, for these colours should be read together. Feel what the colours mean to you, allowing any thoughts or emotions that are being perceived to come through. Start talking to the person of how the colours relate to them. After the ribbons are selected you may find that your client will benefit from wearing them, so that the energies of the ribbons are allowed to flow onto them and help balance their aura. Once you have given your client a basis synopsis of what the ribbons mean, ask your client to throw them oneby-one. Then ask them to look at the ribbons and ask them to describe any shapes numbers or letters that they can see. You can also try psychometry on the ribbons (see Vision 10) as you will find that your client’s impressions will be left on them.

Meanings of the colours. Don’t forget that this is only meant as a guide, develop your own meanings through practice!

White

Orange

White shows the need for secrecy and protectiveness and can imply a lack of self-confidence. Sometimes the client may have leanings towards the occult. If the ribbon is a first choice it is not an auspicious one, if chosen later (after the first four ribbons), it may just show that the client has experienced a very dark period in their life but has to some extent recovered from it. White often shows a need for simplicity and purity in the client’s life, especially if chosen as a fourth, as a second choice it often means that the client is trying to wipe out past trauma and cut ties with their past.

When orange is chosen as a first colour it may be revealing a preoccupation with excesses, whether sex, drink, drugs or money. It is also likely to point to an imbalance between Spiritual and Material. There is a possibility the person may be suffering abuse of some sort or has done so. Be very careful how this is approached - you may be wrong: and if you’re not the person is likely to be sensitive! As a secondary colour orange suggests someone re-learning to “be in the world” as a balanced individual, and may be well on the way to enlightenment.

Brown

Peach

Turquoise

Brown shows an earthiness and connection with nature wherever it is chosen.

Peach shows a tendency to indecision and being easily-lead, especially as a first colour. As any colour after the fourth it can mean balance and self-appreciation.

Turquoise as a first colour shows a strength of character and ability to recover from both illness and difficulties.

Light Blue

Very pale Blue

Dark Blue

Light Blue as a first colour shows a need to be able to speak up for yourself, and an awareness of having difficulty in doing so (especially being able to say no!). In general it means growing communicational strengths.

Pale Blue shows a growing spirituality. As a first colour it says that the client is adaptable, cautious and persistent. Pale blue is a good colour anywhere in the reading.

Dark Blue as a first colour shows skills of clairvoyance and comprehension as well as self-knowledge. As a later choice it will temper any difficulties shown by other colours and add balance and good judgement.

Yellow

Purple

Green

Yellow as a first choice indicates an open and emotional personality, they are likely to have real prospects and the ability to reach personal goals. As a secondary choice it may indicate a lack of power (second choice) or a growing awareness of their own personal power (fifth) or a complete reversal of personality from weak to strong over many years.

Purple as a first colour shows a connection with the psychic side of the personality. The client may have gifts of this sort that they are as yet unaware of, more likely they already know! As a secondary colour it points to the client using their arcane knowledge to assist them through this present lifetime. As the sixth colour it points to eventual success in both a material and spiritual way.

As the first choice green shows a loving and giving personality, perhaps too much so! This person is likely to be easily taken advantage of. Love of oneself and of others are indicated, as is the balance between Body Mind & Spirit. If chosen as a fourth of fifth ribbon, it is a positive colour, unless chosen directly after a first black ribbon, when it may indicate greed and jealousy!

Pink

Pearl Grey

Darker Pink

Pink shows an enthusiastic and open personality, especially as a first colour. As a later choice it indicates an optimistic and outgoing person.

Pearl Grey shows an ‘otherworldliness’ seen in people who have near death experiences, or are very wise and knowing.

A dark pink has a similar meaning to pink, but the strength of the qualities is intensified.

Red Red shows an attachment to the material world, as the first colour chosen, it shows that the client is more materially-minded than spiritually-minded. A person choosing red may have deep-seated issues regarding security (mostly financial) and may find it difficult to maintain relationships. When red is chosen as a secondary colour it shows the client is to some extent balanced (depending on how far away from the first colour it is chosen). Home and family will be important where ever this colour is chosen.

he Norse people were reliant on what they could find around them to kill or cure. We are fortunate to have documented evidence of some of their charms, which was all they had to heal. Their belief in the healing power of herbs is as strong as their belief in Gods, Goddesses and Elementals.

Warts There are many folk remedies for warts that we still follow. Most of them involve imagining the wart getting smaller and dropping off. The old Norse remedy is similar … not surprising as many of us have Norse blood in our veins! Here’s a charming (pun intended) cure for a wart: Wen*, wen, little wen, Here you shall not build, nor have your abode, But you shall go north to the hill nearby Where, benighted one, you have a brother. He shall lay a leaf at your head. Under the wolf’s foot, under the eagle’s wing, Under the eagle’s claw, may you wane forever. Shrivel like a coal on the hearth, Shrink like slime on the wall, Waste away like water in a bucket. Become as little as a grain of linseed, and much smaller than a hand-worm’s hip-bone, and so very small that you become nothing. *wart

Evil Elves As elementals go, Elves in particular were feared. They were not seen as the blond bowsmen with a penchant for pointy ears that we know and love, but as a great cause of sickness to both man and beast. King Alfred’s physician Bald devoted a whole chapter of his Leech book to remedies for elf-shot. It was believed that there were many kinds of elves; wood elves and water elves, bright elves and dark elves, but all of the elves were of the race of Cain and therefore hateful to mankind! The following cure for “WaterElf disease” was preserved within an 11th century Anglo Saxon manuscript. WaterElf disease can be diagnosed from looking at someone and noticing that: “his nails will be wan and his eyes will water and he will wish to look down”. The collection of herbs used for this ailment are as follows: Carline thistle, hassock, the lower part of iris; yewberry; lupine; elecampne; marshmallow head; fen-mint; dill; lily; cock’s-spur grass; pennyroyal; horehound; dock; elder; earthgall; wormwood; strawberry leaves and comfrey. This should be mixed with ale and then have holy water added. When all this is done, sing this charm three times: I have bound the injuries with the best battle-bonds, So the injuries neither burn nor burst, Nor spread, nor go septic, Nor itch; nor the wounds grow, Nor the abcess inflame; but he holds his health himself, Nor ache more than earth aches your ear. Then, the following should be sung over the wound many times: Earth forbear you with all her might and main.

Medicines exist against many evils: “ Earth against drunkenness, heather against worms Oak against costiveness, corn against sorcery, Spurred rye against rupture, runes against bales The moon against feuds, fire against sickness, Earth makes harmless the floods. The Words of Odin, Poetic Edda

There is much that we’ve learnt from our ancestors and our past that we have forgotten … amongst these quaint ancient charms is a wisdom that we are still relearning today.

Nance Turner-Collings delves further into spiritually aware children. Is your child an Indigo, a Crystal or a Rainbow child? Find out how to spot them, what they are here for and how you can help them grow.

T

here seems to be quite an interest these days in children that people have labelled Star Children. So what exactly is a Star child? These children are also sometimes known as Indigos, Crystal and Rainbow children. Why are they here, and do they serve some kind of purpose? Do you think that your child displays the kind of spiritual knowledge and understanding beyond their years? Do you think that maybe your child is just a bit different from ‘the norm’ and can’t explain why? Would you be interested to see if your child was a Star child, and understand that they are here for a reason? In this article, I follow on from Are you an Indigo?, and explain about other types of New Age children and why they are here.

What Is A Crystal Child? Like indigo children, Crystal children are highly sensitive and psychic and are here to bring about peace and love through spirituality; paving the way for this to happen. However, some people would call these children lightworkers, and they have a maturity and fearlessness like no other. These children are extremely wary of strangers, but are attracted to people

in need and the older generation. Perhaps this is because of the maturity and understanding that the older, wiser person will have, and if there are other Crystals about, you will notice that they will gravitate towards each other.

How To Spot A Crystal Child. Crystals are quite easy to spot, the first thing that you will notice is their eyes, large and intense, it seems that they will look right through you, almost like they can read your mind. It is said that Crystals have the ability of telepathy and will use their own sign language to communicate. Most of the Crystals will have been born in 1995 or later, however you can get Indigo/Crystal children. These are Indigo children who, through experience, have discovered their abilities have evolved to be much like that of Crystal children. If this is so there is no way of knowing how many older Crystals there could be. These newer generation (those born after 1995), seem to fascinate and

Some mothers of Crystals have often “ said that when their babies were in the

womb, they couldn’t eat anything but healthy food, as it would seem that they prefer vegetarian meals and juices, rather than the varied diet most of us eat.

50 Vision 12

dazzle with their magnetic personalities. You will find though that they will usually start talking later in childhood, but will be able to sing and play music before this. Like Indigos, some Crystals might be diagnosed with autism or Aspergers Syndrome, but their temperaments couldn’t be further away from an Indigos. Crystals are eventempered; loving; forgiving; highly sensitive and empathic to others; they love nature; have a fondness for animals and display signs early in

childhood of healing abilities. They love anything spiritual and have a deep interest in rocks and crystals. Some mothers of Crystals have often said that when their babies were in the womb, they couldn’t eat anything but healthy food, as it would seem that they prefer vegetarian meals and juices, rather than the varied diet most of us eat. One of the main things about Crystals is their deep understanding of Angels and spirit guides, many of them have past-life memories. So what’s next, if these children have these amazing gifts and talents, surely then there can be nothing left that the universe can share? Well it seems there is … introducing the Rainbow Child.

What Is A Rainbow Child? The Rainbow child is like a cross between James Bond and Charlie’s Angels. These children have no Karma, and no fear. They are not phased by anybody and will go about their mission and won’t let anything stop them. However, that doesn’t make them emotionless: far from it! It seems that Rainbows are totally trusting towards others, and are all about serving the higher good. There isn’t much known about the abilities of these children as Rainbow Children always have Crystal parents. The only thing that we can be sure of is that these children will be healers, mostly hands on, and bring with them the healing Rainbow energy that you would get from many contemporary forms of healing, such as Reiki. The most important thing isn’t really “Is my child a Crystal or Rainbow child?”, it’s recognising that we all should be much more understanding towards children. Maybe adults should pay more attention when our little angels

speak – it seems likely that this is the generation that is going to teach us all a lesson in humanity and peace. All these children are special, most of all because they are consciously aware that we are all equal and that we all create our own realities. Many of them will end up backing worthy ecological causes and leading us towards a better understanding and awareness of our interconnectedness with the planet and each other. Others will become

healers in one form or another, doing their best to eradicate suffering in humans and animals, whether physical, mental or emotional. They will all bring their own uniqueness, in the form of a magical and creative outlook on life and living. These children show us the world through eyes that look beyond the normal three dimensions. Maybe they will help us understand a bit more about ourselves too?

Writer Sangeeta Uppaladinni reviews ancient crystal talismans and amulets.

E

ach crystal and gemstone has its own special energies and divine essence. Working with crystals as talismans and amulets is a bridge to both ancient and modern shamanism. A talisman draws energy towards the wearer, an amulet banishes or protects against negative forces. Amulets were part of medical practice in pagan religions; an amulet was worn around the neck to bring healing for the ailment. A shaman or magician would cast a spell on the crystal, to endow it with magical powers. These objects of power offered the wearer protection. This same belief spans across time and many diverse ancient cultures. Even today, crystal talismans and amulets are used to protect the wearer by warding off negativity and other evil influences. In prehistoric times, the belief in the power of the crystal was strong in the East and West. Evidence of the belief that external objects such as crystals had direct and positive influence on the body was found in early Greek and old Roman writings. There is evidence of crystals being used in the bible, and in the ancient Indian texts of Sanskrit dating back as early as 400 B.C. The Mayan people and the American Indians used crystals to diagnose as well as treat diseases.

Ancient Egypt

Mesoamericans

A hieroglyphic papyrus from the year 2000 B.C. documents a medical cure using a crystal. The ancient Egyptians held a firm belief in the power of amulets and talismans made from crystals. Carnelian was a favoured stone, being known as the Blood of Isis, and was viewed as a potent protection from negative witchcraft and sorceries. Wearing a sapphire ring or carrying a piece of agate was considered a potent talisman as well. The pharaohs often had their headdresses lined with an amulet of malachite to help them rule wisely. Carnelian, tiger’s eye and turquoise were shaped into amulets representing the scarab and the Eye of Horus; to give the dead protection in the afterlife.

Ancient Mayan tribes believed that obsidian talismans sharpened inner and outer vision. Protective amulets were deemed necessary for any dealing with spirits from the underworld. The quartz crystal has, for thousands of years, been used as an talisman to bring about rainfall by the native tribes and aboriginals. Ancient Peruvians used jade amulets to ward off kidney infections.

Asia and Middle East Tibetans wore cloth bands imbedded with the protective quality of turquoise to ward off the evil eye and contagious diseases. They used coral to avert lightening and hail. Arabs used coral as an amulet to ward off the covetous glances aimed at a child. The Chinese wore white jade amulets to guard or free the wearer from palpitations of the heart and a jade butterfly was an important talisman to attract successful love. To the Chinese jade is the essence of love. Ancient India is a rich source of information about the planetary usage of crystal talismans and amulets. Astrological documents written as early as 400 BC contain detailed observations of the power of various stones to counteract negative effects of planetary positions. In the Far East, talismans containing opals were thought to make the wearer a more truthful person, by attracting those same qualities.

A shaman or magician would cast a “spell on or into the crystal talisman, to endow it with magical powers. These objects of power offered the wearer protection

Europe One Greek manuscript details a heart shaped amulet of magnetite, with the underworld Goddess Hecate engraved on it. It was thought to be a powerful protection from the underworld spirits. An amulet of coral, aquamarine and beryl was used by the sea-faring people of Greece, to provide protection from the fury that could be faced at sea, Coral has also been used as a talisman for love.

Make your own magical crystal amulets and talismans To charm something is to energise. Many people today charge their talismans and amulets with their own intention or mantras. Some people who believe in the Sun and the Moon feel amulets are best

charged at a precise time during the waning of the moon to get rid of negativity, and talismans are best charged during a precise time during the waxing of the moon, to draw the power. This

purifies the stones and bestows upon the user the maximum use of its powers. The talismans and amulets below can be charged with the Sun’s or Moon’s energy as necessary.

Talisman to attract good dreams If you’re getting a series of bad dreams, place agate, amethyst and garnet crystals under your pillow before you sleep.

Talisman and Amulet to do well in business Place a piece of malachite crystal in the cash register to repel bad luck. Place one malachite stone in each corner of the business as well to attract customers.

Talisman to aid in the cleansing and detoxifying effect on the body Tie a soft black cord around a piece of quartz and jade crystal and then tie around the neck in the form of a necklace.

Talisman to attract and enhance creative and innovative abilities Keep blue lace agate, rose quartz and pearls on your desk where you work on a piece of silk cloth.

Amulet to attract love Keep love and desire flowing into your life. Set rose quartz, red jasper, carnelian and amethyst crystals in a silver or gold crystal holder and wear next to your skin for maximum effect.

When you next hold a crystal talisman or amulet, you are continuing practices which are as old as human kind. Carrying

a charm will help build up charge and focus your unconscious mind on the energy of the talisman, helping you to

make appropriate decisions. So why not spend some time meditating with your charm and see what happens …

O

n June 30th 1921 photographer Alfred Watkins had a revelation. He was visiting Blackwardine, near Leominster and studying a map to see if he could find any interesting features. It suddenly occurred to him that the various landmarks could be linked by straight lines. He developed this theory and published books on the subject, the most famous of which is The Old Straight Track. This book is still in print today. Alfred named these alignments ‘Ley Lines’, a name we have used ever since. There are lots of different theories to account for these ‘Ley Lines’; Alfred felt that they were a network of roads used by our ancestors, but others feel that they are part of the earth’s own system of veins and arteries, a planetary circulatory system. What is certain is that there are some astoundingly long alignments, stretching across whole countries and even continents. The most famous in England is the ‘St. Michael’ line, which reaches from Lands End in the far west right across to the east coast of Norfolk. Authors and Dowsers Paul Broadhurst & Hamish Miller traced this line over a period of some years, and the account of their adventures in The Sun & the Serpent is compelling – and a really good read! They made some important discoveries about the nature of the energies. One of these was that each

Michelle Jones looks at the earth’s energy lines alignment is not made up of one line, but two! There is a ‘male’ (Michael) energy and a ‘female’ (Mary) energy. These ‘yin’ and ‘yang’ forces weave in and out and across each other, with the alignment of sacred sites forming the straight line

Bridge Mump and the Avebury Complex. Because of the distance between the sites on the line it is difficult for our rational minds to imagine how our ancestors managed this feat. To understand it, perhaps we should look at it from the perspective of the dowser. I have spent many a happy hour (along with my long suffering family) tramping around stone circles, churches and remote hillsides with my rods and pendulum. It is possible to ‘tune in’ to the energy of a certain line; this enables you to pick it up at other points, without the tedious need to walk the entire length! If our ancestors (as I believe) had this ability, then it suddenly becomes much easier to see how the alignments occurred. Some sites, such as the Avebury Complex, can have two or more ‘major’ energy lines crossing at certain points, it may be that ancient man was able to utilize the earth energies in some way, in order to enhance their lives. If you would like to dowse these

through the centre. The whole design forms the sign of the ‘Caduceus’, the staff entwined by serpents – or our own pattern of DNA. On the St. Michael line, there are a staggering 63 churches within 500 yards of the central alignment, of which 10 are dedicated to St. Michael or St. George, and 23 to St. Mary. Also on the alignment are Carn Les Boel, St. Michael’s Mount, The Hurlers, The Cheesewring, Glastonbury Tor, Burrow

energies, then I feel that the most effective tools are dowsing rods. I use both rods and pendulum (not at the same time!), but whereas a pendulum will tell you where the energy is, the rods can point in the direction of flow, which saves a lot of time wandering back and forth! If you do not have a sacred site or stone circle to hand then you might–discreetly – try your local church. In a notebook, draw a rough outline of the building (as if you were looking at it from above, no great artistic skill required) then walk around the outside of the building and see what you pick up. Mark on the drawing where you picked up a signal. If your marks are on opposing sides, then you may have picked up a line running through the building. If you are really lucky, you may pick up more than one line, which means that there will be a

crossing point or ‘node’ within. If it is appropriate, you may be able to dowse inside the building to confirm your findings – but please, respect houses of worship and if you are worried, ask permission first, most vicars are genuinely interested (in my experience anyway) and don’t mind, as long as you are not causing any disruption or damage. Dowsing during a service is probably not a good idea! You can also try local landmarks; the male or ‘yang’ energy lines tend to be found on the high points, such as hills, whereas the female or ‘yin’ energies tend to be found near wells,

streams or other watery sites. Once ‘tuned in’ to a certain energy line, picking it up becomes easier with practice. Another of my favourite pastimes is to sit as the passenger in a car, with my pendulum in my hand to see what I pick up. Incidentally, I use the pendulum for this as the rods can interfere with concentration if they suddenly swing round and poke the driver in the ribs! If you note on a map (large scale is best) where you picked up energy signals, then you will be able to get an idea of the direction. Extend the line on the map; see what landmarks fall along

the line, and then try dowsing there to see if the same energy signature appears. As within our own body, it seems that there are major veins and arteries of energy branching off into ever smaller ones. There is one school of thought that says you are never more than six feet away from an energy line! Alfred Watkins vision seems more relevant today than ever. Perhaps by discovering more about these energies, we will learn how better to care for the planet – so get out there and get dowsing!

Ostara / Spring Equinox March 19th-22nd.

T

his is the time of year when gardeners are preparing the earth to plant seeds, so that they germinate and grow into beautiful strong plants. Just as we plant the seeds in the earth for them to grow, now is the time to take the first steps in making some of our ideas and wishes to come into fruition. To do this we must plan carefully, feed these ideas with positive energy and as they grow we must pull out any weeds (obstacles) that may prevent them from growing or reaching their full potential. It is also a good time to take an inventory of your magickal supplies e.g. candles, incense, herbs and replace any items that need replenishing. You could also apply this to yourself if your energy levels are low, by checking what is lacking in your diet and making sure you are eating healthily. This is advice that I intend following myself, so that I will also have the right amount of energy to empower my magickal work. A new broom sweeps clean, clean out the old and make way for the new! Bright Blessings

Andrea.

Also known as: Eostre, Alban Eilir and Lady Day. Ostara is a solar festival of fire, light and also fertility; it is the time when day and night are in perfect balance. Ostara marks the start of spring; new life is starting to appear everywhere. Days will now lengthen and light triumphs over the darkness of winter. The God is now a young man and the Goddess is represented as the maiden. This is where the God and Goddess begin their courtship; it is an old pagan tradition to dye or paint hard boiled eggs, (as the egg represents the Cosmos). Take them outside and balance them on their ends to symbolize equilibrium. Magick can be used to balance any imbalances that we may have in our lives. I have included a ritual for the Ostara celebration to balance any Karmic debt we have.

Goddess of the Month Eostra. Also known as Ostara, Eostre, Eostrae, Eastre and Austra. Her festival day is the between the 19th – 21st of March, the Spring Equinox. Elements. Fire and Earth. Eostra was worshipped by the ancient Teutonic Anglo – Saxon people. Eostra is a sun Goddess of the dawn and spring, she brings with her life anew, beginnings, growth and fertility. The Hare is her sacred animal which is reflected in the Easter Bunny. Eostra is good to invoke for fertility rites and rituals, also plant and wild life, especially new-born animals.

Ingredients 1 x black candle. 1 x white candle. 1 x jasmine or rose incense. 1 blank piece of paper. 1 x black pen. 1 x cauldron or fireproof dish. Take the black pen and write a list on your piece of paper any of the negative things you may have said or done, that have upset or hurt a member of your family or a friend. This could even be about yourself such as when you have overindulged by drinking too much alcohol or overeating. When you have done this place all of your ingredients on your altar and cast a circle by pointing your index finger out in front of you, starting at the north and turn around clockwise. Imagine a golden light shooting out of your finger, stop when you have turned a full circle, then say “the circle is now cast”. Now light both candles and your incense. Either out loud or silently ask for the Goddess and God to be present in your circle to witness your ritual for Karmic rebalance. Take your piece of paper that you wrote your list on and place it in the cauldron. Then set light to the piece of paper. As the paper burns imagine all your karmic debts being rebalanced. N.B. Always make sure the cauldron is placed away from anything that can catch fire, such as curtains etc. When you have done this and the flame has died out, thank the Goddess and God for being present at your ritual. Then close the circle by pointing your index finger in front of you, again starting in the North turn anti-clockwise back to the start, at the same time imagining the golden light returning back into your finger. Once this is done say “the circle is closed, so mote it be”. Now snuff out your candles and scatter the ash from the cauldron onto your garden.

Here is a great recipe to celebrate Ostara in style. Even if you don’t fancy doing a ceremony, these cakes taste wonderful! Ingredients: 1/2 cup of Sweet wine 1 large egg 2/3 cup flour Large pinch of cinnamon Dash of salt 2 tablespoons of sugar Cooking oil 1 cup of honey to dip the cakes in. Instructions: Beat the wine and egg in a mixing bowl, then in another bowl mix the flour, cinnamon, salt and sugar together. After you have done this, empty the flour mixture into the bowl with the egg and wine, mix it all together, then let it stand for 30 minutes. Heat a tablespoon of oil in frying pan, when it is hot drop the batter into the oil 1 tablespoonful at a time. Cook until golden brown, then serve with honey. Makes approximately : 6 cakes

Paula Garton takes a look at the effect of the planets’ movements in March

F

rom the 2nd March the winged messenger, Mercury, turns backwards until 25th March. Mercury represents information, ideas and knowledge, which are transferred from one person to another by whatever means technology allows. When it turns backwards it is a time when thoughts, ideas, information and emotional responses need to be mulled over and reassessed before being released to the world. Consequently, information is delayed. This is a time for us to rethink what we are doing and how. Computers, faxes, printers, phones, transport or any other form of information network refuse to work properly, delaying the information until it is right for the nation. Whilst Mercury appears to move backwards in the sky it is not a good time to buy any of the above, as they probably won’t work! It is also not good to sign contracts, agreements or start a new business. One benefit of Mercury in retrograde is that if you lose something during this time it will come back to you. If you have to travel, leave plenty of time to get to your destination. On the 4th March jolly Jupiter, the biggest planet in the solar system, also appears to turn backwards and does not turn back again until the 6th July. Jupiter represents our belief systems, confidence, legal issues and expansion of the mind gained through knowledge and travel. It is thought to be a beneficient planet that gives us all the goodies we could wish for (before Saturn sets limits and takes them away!). Jupiter does not want limits but continual growth:

60 Vision 12

knowledge, freedom and liberty. This retrograde phase emphasises all these things, so we can take off into the world in search of new horizons and fresh knowledge, ignoring the responsibilities and commitments we leave behind. However, with all these positive things our behaviour can change and become warped as our confidence is inflated and our perspective skews. This tends to make us want to attempt the impossible, demand justice, disagree with family values and believe we can conquer the world. Fine, but not very realistic! Magnifying this problem are difficult beams flowing from Neptune the planet of illusion, ideals and disorientation. So, not a good time for making decisions as we presume everything will turn out to be wonderful, when in reality it might not! The stock exchange may also suffer – our dreams can be dashed as the bull and bear clash! Legal problems are also likely, don’t move house or take people to court if you can avoid it. Study can be more difficult than usual: we do not want to spend time reading when we could travel and learn from experience. Avoid smooth talkers too, especially when they are selling get rich quick schemes. All proposals may seem fine on the surface – you are likely to see only what you want to see now: not what is the real situation! Saturn is moving very slowly in Leo on its backward phase and will turn back to a direct path on 5th April. Saturn tends to hold up your social life and complicate romance and issues around children until it moves direct. Its movement through Leo makes it difficult for the theatre and entertainment industry: these are hindered by bureaucracy and restrictions.

Your March Forcast

T

here are some very subtle psychological pressures manifesting themselves in your life this month and a key question will be – is your glass half full or half empty? One part of you will be struggling to bring about change and improvement, feeling resentful at having to accept something which may well be seen as second best – while another part of you will want to keep things on a safe and even keel, not wanting to rock anybody’s boat, and staying with what is established and familiar. Some people advocate change while other friends advocate stability and stasis and you’re in the middle of the sandwich wondering what you should do for the best, or if, indeed, you should do anything at all! If it were me, I’d put off making any major decisions until the end of the month…things will look very different on the 28th than the way they look on the 8th, so bide your time.

probably be a minor disappointment in the first seven days of the month when a door of opportunity slams shut in your face. Personally, I’ll breathe a sigh of relief on your behalf, for I suspect that this was a doorway to disaster rather than delight. Another door of opportunity opens on the 18th 19th or 20th probably involving a younger colleague or friend and this portal offers green lights of gain without any kind of risk or gamble. New business strategies and financial disciplines start bearing fruit by the 27th of March to such an extent that although this month may have begun on a bit of a low it ends on a very high high. Mature and experienced Pisceans should find the confidence to delegate duties and responsibilities to younger people around them, while younger and inexperienced Pisceans may well need to accept the burden of greater responsibility.

going to be thinking back to the events of the mid 1990s and wondering where the last ten years have gone! One blink of an eye and you’re so much older, but the question is, are you any the wiser? This is the conundrum that faces you as you try to evaluate the worth of your present day emotional situations and try to decide what to do about some of the things that are not quite right in your life at this moment of time. Younger Pisceans who do not have a history to explore will still find themselves hooked on the horns of a romantic dilemma. What do you do? Stick with who you’ve got or risk losing that person while you cast your eye around to see if there is anything (anyone) better on the horizon? The 24th and 25th of March will be a key period for receiving enlightenment on this subject and some of your information and insight must inevitably come from a most unlikely source.

Your March Forcast

S

ocial aspects are very strongly highlighted throughout the whole of March and it should be an interesting time for making new friends on a variety of different levels… romantic connotations for some, business links for others. It is also a period of powerful family integration – so if there have been rifts and arguments we will now see a very welcome trend of compromise and reconciliation. A lot of you will find yourselves joining clubs, committees and societies and there should be at least one major social event taking place between the 6th and the 8th – probably quite a formal occasion that will demand face paint and glad rags. A spanner in the works may slow you down a bit around the 15th or 16th when a number of plans/ideas will have to be put on hold for a while. There are a few negative energies seeping in through the bedroom window during the last days of the month and in your dealings with loved ones you

64 Vision 12

will need to watch your words and make sure that they are not misinterpreted. Cash & Careers: Who you know will prove to be as important as what you can do, and this is something that will have a repetitive theme throughout March, but with special significance on the 2nd 3rd and 4th and then again around the 18th and 19th. While there will be some cash gains made, greater gains are made in levels of power and influence. A danger zone hovers around the 20th 22nd and 23rd of the month, when, without realizing you’re doing it, you may be guilty of bullying other people and as a result of that, rubbing their feathers the wrong way and meeting up with some criticism and opposition. While March is not the best of months for wild gambles, a few wellcalculated risks should serve you well, providing you retain control of your own purse strings. Many Arians will be looking at loans and credit deals and my

advice is to shop around a bit.

Relationships: There is definitely some room for new relationships to bloom and flourish this month and the first days of March in particularly are well-aspected: connecting with new romantic and sexual interests that should gather weight and momentum over the following days and weeks. Both the 6th and the 19th of March are key dates for making serious emotional promises and commitments, but you should make sure you know the seriousness of what you are committing yourself to. Wobbles of confidence around the 24th and 25th won’t do you any good at all and your popularity could plummet like a 747 minus wings and engines if you find you have to u-turn or admit to a member of the opposite sex that you may have been a bit premature in your declarations of undying love! Arian males should be extremely cautious if dealing with Scorpio ladies.

arch promises to be a very full and busy month with a number of issues battling for priority in the great scheme of things. You’ll be juggling these priorities the way that a circus act juggles his balls and although things may get a bit tense and intense from time-to-time, there is nevertheless a sense of fun and enthusiasm that propels you through these next few weeks with a smile on your face. Business and pleasure mix very well and there should be more than a few late nights in the first couple of weeks of March – but around the 21st or 22nd you’ll start feeling the need for just a little bit of solitude and personal space. One does not get the impression that you’re having to deal with major problems or crises, but there are some future plans in the wind that do need to be thought through carefully, and that is something you might find difficult

to do with Bacchus singing in one ear and your partner yelling in the other. Cash & Career: The positive financial trends of February follow through into March and the 4th 5th and 6th in particular are good times for launching a new idea or business project. While financial confidence is, as I have intimated, very high, there may well be some minor frustrations creeping in around the 18th or 19th when you don’t have quite enough spare cash in your pocket to do everything that you want to do right then and there! Learn how to be patient and control the purse strings at this time. New business contacts made around the 24th will prove to be fruitful and this may also be a time for meeting up with old friends and colleagues. Travel aspects in connection with business look strong and this is also a time for reviewing property investments.

Relationships: Family life may get a bit fraught during the first week of the month when you find you don’t have as much time for family matters as some members of your family think you should have. This will cause some resentment within you – after all, the family is benefiting from your hard work as much as you are yourself – but you’ll be inclined to keep your thoughts to yourself and seethe inside with a sense of injustice. The mood changes around the 8th … for some Taureans this will be caused by a new romantic interest while for others it may just be a case of someone working to smooth your ruffled feathers. Either way, it’s all smiles for a while with some welcome improvement to your pulling power! A late month social engagement may prove to be expensive, but worth its weight in gold.

he accent this month will be on the establishment of greater individual freedoms. This reflects both on the work scene (where you’ll find yourself able to achieve far more if left to your own devices), as well as within the framework of relationships. You can’t live in someone’s pocket (or beneath their duvet) 24/7 and as such, whether you want to or not, you need to acquire just a little more independence. Having said all that, March should be a busy social month and on more than one occasion you will find yourself standing in the limelight and enjoying a high degree of personal popularity. The 4th 5th and 6th are very auspicious dates for arranging parties and making travel plans while the period between the 13th and 19th sees you concentrating on family matters, and perhaps becoming rather more actively involved in the lives of children.

66 Vision 12

Cash & Career: While March is a good month for cash and careers you will feel inclined to go a wee bit more cautiously than usual as you negotiate your way around a couple of thorny problems on the work scene involving colleagues and their relationships with bosses and management. Which side are you on? Are you with the chiefs or the Indians? Where exactly do your loyalties lay? Things may come to a crunch around the 20th 22nd or 23rd when you have to put your money where your mouth is and make important choices that must inevitably have a long term effect upon your own career pathway and business position. With these thoughts in mind I’d be inclined to sit in the big wig-wam with the chiefs and let the Indians go on the warpath on their own.

Relationships: With regard to romance, March will be an up and down month. The ups will be falling nicely into place during the first fortnight and then the downs cause some frustration and distress in weeks three and four. The way I see it, you’re looking for the best of both worlds. On the one hand you want to feel safe and secure, loved and protected, but on the other hand you want to enjoy a sense of freedom and liberty to do what you want and be what you want… and of course, these two extremes are incompatible. When you’re feeling loving, caring and sexy, there’ll be no problems: but it is when you start feeling restless and claustrophobic and start looking for a little bit more space that a lover or partner is going to start getting worried – and is going to start putting you under some pressure.

ancerians can be the most obnoxiously stubborn creatures when the mood takes them and March is a month where that stubborn streak comes out in all its dreadful glory. Someone or something will ruffle your feathers in the early days and then it will become an issue right the way through into April! I suppose you might see this as a situation where you feel you have to fight for your rights and to raise your voice to make sure your opinions and points of view are heard, but from everyone else’s point of view, you’ll be a right pain. Is this time for a reality check? It probably is, but more importantly it is also a time for you to keep some of your thoughts to yourself and tune in to your immense powers of perception and intuition, letting these energies act as your guides and guardians. One thing you do have to get a grasp on though; is the fact that not everyone can share your viewpoint and

they will not conform to your expectations of them. Cash & Career: Career-minded Cancerians should have a productive month, although it has to be said that more will be achieved if you can take things in your stride and go with the flow, rather than racing round like a chicken trying to do too much all at once and constantly working against the clock. Some changes of work routine around the 20th will be a welcome breath of fresh air and some travel aspects for later in the month are worth looking forward to. You’re under too much pressure and could do with a break even if it’s only a couple of nights in a small hotel. Major purchases should be avoided in March but there is no harm in windowshopping. A gift of jewellery will be relevant on March 29th. Relationships: March will be a complicated month for relationships and what you’re looking for will determine

how pleased you are with what you end up getting. In long-established relationships there will be some frustrations and tensions coming to a head, and you are best advised to get ‘em out into the open ASAP and get them sorted as fast as you can. Young relationships run into difficulty through lack of compassion and lack of communication, and perhaps through one party’s expectations being unrealistically high. (As a side thought here, anyone with a Cancerian partner who expects that partner to put them before their freedom, independence and career, is likely to experience some disappointment.) Is it all chaos, doom and gloom? No, not really, for on another level, this is an important time for Cancer-born people to find better relationships with themselves and this is certainly a time wherein Cancerian mothers can find deeper resonance in their relationships with their children.

ebruary will have been quite an austere month for many Leos but March, praise the Lord, is a much better and brighter kettle of fish. Even without birthdays or anniversaries there is a mood of celebration in the wind that keeps a smile on your face and puts you in the mood for love! Very early in the month around the 2nd 3rd and 4th you’ll be given the green light to go ahead with a long standing plan or ambition, and around the 8th or 9th some sort of minor triumph (either in the boardroom or the bedroom) gives your personal self confidence a boost. Indeed, all personal relationships flourish this month and especially during the middle weeks when it must seem that you can do no wrong. Your instinct and intuition is very strong at this time, so play your hunches and go with your gut feelings in all things. You’ll be pleasantly surprised at how willing

68 Vision 12

23 July – 22 Aug

other people will be to follow your lead. Cash & Careers: It isn’t just that there’s a bit more spare cash around in March that makes you feel more confident and positive; it’s the sure-fire knowledge that there’s a lot more lolly in the pipeline that will be coming in by mid-summer. Having learned by past mistakes you will not be counting chickens before they’ve hatched and as you have also learned not to keep all your eggs in the same basket, you can be certain that if plan (A) doesn’t work for any reasons, plans (B) and (C) most certainly will! The 9th 10th and 11th are important dates for business meetings and conferences, while the 22nd 23rd and 24th are optimum times for travelling and mixing business with pleasure. Relationships: I need to look at emotional and romantic relationships on

two levels. First, those in stable and secure partnerships can look forward to a very productive month in which a lot of old rubbish can be got rid of and a few old wounds can be healed. There is a closeness here, and a bonding that strengthens vows and commitments as two people work in harmony towards a common goal. Single (and perhaps younger) Leos, on the other hand, are likely to get into all kinds of hedonistic adventures. This is not permissiveness gone mad, but more a case of pure old fashioned fun after a period of abstinence in the bedroom department. But what (I hear some of you moan) about those single Leos who are not quite so young? Worry not, my friends, worry not – for Eros smiles sweetly upon you and upon a few small hotels slightly south of Sheffield.

Your March Forcast

M

arch will probably be quite a hectic month for many people born beneath the sign of Virgo, and especially the first six or seven days when you’ll find yourself having to be in two places at the same time and social commitments and engagements are just plain silly! You won’t want to let people down but if it’s so-and-so’s birthday on the same night as thingy’s anniversary party, and the two venues are a hundred miles apart, then something’s got to go! Having said that, you might just pull it off as your ingenuity and energy levels are very high right now. On or around the 13th or 14th some long worked for ambition falls into place giving you good cause to enjoy a few celebrations of your own. This powerful trend slows down a little around the 26th or 27th when an older member of the family drops a spanner in the works.

23 Aug – 22 Sept

Cash & Careers: Generally speaking, this is a productive and progressive period on the work front without too many hiccups or crises. In fact, a mood of camaraderie and trust encourages work routines to run very smoothly at this time and if there is a flirtatious aspect to one of your professional associations, then I don’t see much harm in it. If anything, it spices the flavour up a bit and makes your place of work the place you want to be. Cash aspects get a bit of a boost from the 14th onwards with some extra revenue coming in from a partner or from someone who wishes to say thank you for your services and friendship in a practical way. Some new domestic arrangements may also be extremely beneficial at this time, which brings me nicely on to another key subject. Relationships: There’s a tremendous buzz of sexual and romantic

excitement fizzling away like hot pancakes throughout the whole of March, and while you might be committed to careers or old mothers etc, it is not going to stop you from enjoying the very best that life can offer you at this time – and there is one person in particular who is going to be making sure that you say “yes” to all that is on offer. Romances which have been a little cautious and half-hearted now get steamier and significantly more serious – single members of the sign will be weighing up the pros and cons of staying single and very elderly members of the sign will either be enjoying marvellous memories of their past or proving that you are “never too old”! If something pops up unexpectedly to slow things down a bit on or around the 27th or 28th do not over-react to this delay, but use it as a breathing space to check out some of your choices and decisions.

Your March Forcast

S

ome hard work needs to be done this month to banish a few moods of false modesty! This is not a time for holding back, but for pushing forward with your perseverance and personality to make you voice heard and your opinions known. On another level, those Librans who wait quietly in the wings hoping that other people do all the running and initiating may be disappointed with the results, and therefore the message here is simple – “if tha wants summat done, do it thee sen” – or, if you don’t come from West Yorkshire, if you want something done (and done properly, mind you) you’d best have a go at it yourself rather than putting too much trust in third parties! Your moods get brighter and more confident around the 19th when you will experience a lot of lift and support on the emotional front and some small business

70 Vision 12

23 sept – 23 Oct victory around the 25th puts some icing on the cake for you. Cash & Careers: A challenging start to the month when you will feel you just don’t want to be bothered with boring work routines and unrewarding responsibilities. A tendency then, to keep your head down with your nose to the grindstone, and frankly, not caring too much about the result. The mood changes around the 14th or 15th, when domestic and romantic events give you a lot more personal sparkle, and this is something which must inevitably have a knock-on effect on the job scene. Social occasions harmonise nicely with business plans and this should be a great period for networking and taking on some new ideas. March 25th onwards is probably the best time of your month when you come to realise you’re making a lot more progress than you first thought. Realationships: Little wonder

that your mind won’t be on work related subjects during the early part of March, you’ll be far more concerned about what is happening in your personal life. Therefore, when your emotional selfconfidence gets a big boost towards the middle of the month, providing hard evidence that you’re on the right romantic track and that some of your recent decisions (however hard they were to make) have been the right decisions, this will be just what you want and need! Some younger Librans still have decisions to make with regard to commitment and co-habitation, but these can be taken in their stride; professional Librans now quietly come to realize that emotional wealth is more lasting and more important than cash in the bank. There is a release of pent up energy around the 25th which fairly well guarantees a heightened degree of sensuality during the last days of the month.

Your March Forcast

M

arch promises to be a positive month without too many of life’s lows and rather a lot of life’s highs. Jobs and career patterns are in place and you can expect things to run smoothly in this department without drama or crises and allowing you to concentrate on much more interesting personal and emotional situations – and possibly, to consider the pros and cons of various educational and/or artistic pursuits and pathways. An old ambition (that was not fully attained when last you tried to achieve it) gets a second look and some new life as a partner or lover encourages you to “have another go!” Some Scorpio-born people will experience a deep and private feeling of personal self-satisfaction when they realise that they have successfully dumped a lot of old emotional baggage from the past, and as such, they are far better placed to deal with whatever the

24 Oct – 23 Nov future holds than they were a year or so ago. Cash & Careers: A steady and progressive period wherein established routines and work issues bring far greater gains than half-cocked, harebrained schemes and apparent short cuts! There may be some temptation in the wind around the 18th or 19th to upset the apple cart but I guest that your good sense will prevail and that by the 24th or 25th you’ll be glad that it did. Someone else who does take the short cut will come a right old cropper and you may be forgiven for thinking “there but for the Grace of God, go I!” In the latter days of March you will be thinking constructively about long-term career pathways – do you keep things as they are for a while longer or start introducing some fairly hefty changes over the next few weeks? A major decision on this subject is most likely to be made on March 31st.

Relationships: Because March is going to be a much more emotionally stable month than was February, it stands to reason that it should also be calmer and more productive. Important conversations with lovers and partners around the 4th and 5th will put some new ground rules in place that, if adhered to, will bring much improvement to relationships before the onset of April. March 18th 19th and 20th will see some conditional emotional commitments being made, but if you’re looking for more than that (total unconditional surrender?) you may well be miffed and disappointed. All Scorpios (and for that matter, anyone who has any emotional entanglement with a Scorpio) need to work very hard at keeping moods of jealousy and possessiveness on a very tight rein.

here is a very busy start to the month with too much to do and not enough time to do it in. Your energy levels might not be very high, suggesting minor pockets of ill-health and/or problems with sleep depravation. Some rescheduling of events and work projects will be relevant around the 6th 7th and 8th but by the 12th or 13th you should bouncing back with some new waves of energy and optimism. There is a distinct shift of mood on the 20th of March when interests move from the professional and practical to the emotional and romantic – with some interesting artistic aspects also coming online. In any kind of intellectual tug between head and heart, I would say follow your heart and do not be afraid to tell other people how you’re feeling and what you’re thinking. Someone in a position of authority will be very useful

72 Vision 12

24 Nov – 21 Dec

and supportive in the last days of March and at least one key new friendship or alliance will be made. Cash & Careers: You must make sure that you do not bring any domestic problems into your place of work and equally important, don’t let your emotions cloud your professional objectivity. These trends are focussed between the 1st and the 14th and you should find yourself moving into more tranquil seas from the 15th onwards. Certainly, more gains will be made in the second half of the month than the first, but only if you are not in any great hurry. Self-employed Sagittarians will benefit from a lot of support from lovers and partners and even PAYE centaurs may find themselves having to (or choosing to) do a lot more work from home. A room in your home will be turned into an office – temporary or otherwise.

Relationships: Without a doubt the accent this month is definitely on domestic and emotional situations and despite a rather low-key start around the 2nd to the 8th when you’ll be trying to work out some of your priorities, March is a marvellous month for cementing the bonds of old friendships and making one or two new ones. Single Sagittarians make new romantic commitments, especially around the 20th, while people in established relationships can look forward to significant anniversaries in the latter days of the month. Travel aspects may be of interest to some, but of greater interest to most will be the amount of time it takes to get home from the office or place of work! If you have any kind of niggling concern about anything at all, do not keep it to yourself but talk to a lover/partner/friend and the anxiety will be swiftly removed.

inancial and practical matters may dominate the early days of March but as the month progresses your priorities seem to switch away from the ‘cash-bucks-now’ agenda and you will find yourself thinking about other things which will have greater relevance to your mid and long-term future. Travel plans will either be made or discussed and property will be on the agenda somewhere along the line. Although you might have a few concerns about your future direction this is a time when experience from your history will serve you very well and there will be opportunities to find a greater degree of excitement and adventure in your life without risking your safety and your security. Important conversations and agreements around the 20th and 22nd provide vital information and set the traffic lights to green and go.

terms the period between the 1st to the 6th is probably going to be the most productive for you, but there is as strong monetary mandate working for you throughout the whole of the month. True, there is a switch around the half way mark… Between the 1st and the 14th you’ll be concentrating on the here and the now and from the 15th onwards you’ll be looking a little further down the financial highway towards 2007 and 2008. There will be some very good professional advice available between the 20th and the 24th and as you’ll be paying good money for it, you’d be daft not to listen and take it seriously. If, occasionally, you find yourself running out of confidence, don’t worry too much. It is only natural. You are, after all, contemplating some very major changes to your career pathway and lifestyle.

just been saying about major changes ahead it should be reassuring to know that there is lots of support on hand, not only from family and friends but also from a “significant other” who is possibly even more keen than you are yourself to see certain major changes falling into place, and from their point of view, the sooner the better! While it is true that March might not be a wildly romantic or sensually sexy month it is a period wherein you do get a profound degree of back-up, support, understanding and emotional reassurance from those nearest and dearest to you and there is a powerful binding energy of commitment that keeps couples together rather than pushing them apart. The events of the 23rd 24th should be enough to prove my point, so be prepared for some pleasant surprises.

his is a bit of a big dipper month for you… you’re up, you’re down and then you’re on the up again! The opening salvos of March bring high energy and you’ll find yourself being very productive in getting most of your own way, both at work and also in the home – although to be fair, there isn’t any conflict in either domain. Some problems arise around the 10th,11th and 12th when something gets delayed or simply just doesn’t happen at all. This may be no great thing but it will be quite enough for us to see a rare flash of Aquarian temper and temperament! The mood swings upwards again on the 19th and 20th which is a great time for you to use your intuition, make a little more time for your love life and if you’ve been celibate for rather too long the 27th and 28th could change that for you overnight. Cash & Careers: In all matters appertaining to financial gain the keynote

74 Vision 12

word (and concept) must be “communication”. If there are breakdowns in communication there will be hiccups and interruptions to cash flow, so, on the one hand March is a good month for redesigning telephone and computer systems … and on the other hand, you must take care not to misinterpret what is being said to you and make doubly certain that third parties are not misunderstanding your words! Important letters need to be (and will be) written and dispatched between the 1st and the 7th. You’ll expect replies no later than the 21st but probably won’t get them until the 27th or 28th – which may cause a degree of frustration, but no real problem. A financial or investment offer from a high street bank might appear to be junk mail, but there’s a golden nugget for you in this one if you read between the lines. Just for once open it before you recycle!

Relationships: I suppose that the concept of communications is as important in affairs of the heart as it is in your business affairs, but in this department of your life there may be the added problem of someone not being able to understand you, not because they can’t see your point of view, but because they just don’t want to. Not much you can do here. Either you let someone stew in their own juice while you get on with doing what’s important to you, or you make a sacrifice and don’t do what you want to do – which would be a shame because your motives are pure and your agenda has merit. You single Aquarians have some fun in the first week of the month, all Aquarians should show restraint and avoid sexual temptation between the 9th and the 12th and mature self-contained Aquarians make some very important relationship changing decisions on or around March 26th.

Psychic Art by Marion Voy There are so many books on the market that talk about mediums and their quest to find their spirituality and themselves. This book is a book like those. However, it is not a book that has been edited away until nothing of the writer remains, it is a book that is written by a real person that comes through on every page. Marion Voy is a psychic artist and a Spiritualist, a lady driven by a personal quest to find answers after the death of her beloved Nana and then her Grandfather. This book gives her answers to many of the questions that we all ask: questions about life-after-death; past-lives and guardian angels. It also gives examples of some case-studies from her files and is full of little tips and some lovely poems. If you want to hear first-hand about these things from a lady that has spent some time researching and practising; if you want to read something that isn’t all candyfloss and slick quotes, then this is the book for you. “In the stillness of the self you will find inner peace. You will find the truth – the answers you are looking for. Drop into the recess of your mind. There lies the key to the door.” Psychic Art-Seeing is Believing is available from all good bookshops, www.amazon.co.uk and you can also order direct from Marion on www.marionvoy.com

The book is ideal for the reader that wants to work magically with the angels as it lists times and dates that are particular appropriate for contacting them. This CD sparkles and calms, which is no mean feat! Enchanting oriental chimes cascade through calm, relaxing melodies: perfect for Reiki … in fact perfect for any quiet therapy or for meditation and relaxation. The composition on this album has been designed to harmonise, complement and enhance the Reiki experience and I can well believe that any client would be delighted to lay back and be pampered to this soundtrack. I know from personal experience that it is quite common for someone to be nervous if receiving Reiki for the first time. This music puts those fears at bay and reassures.
